Terence Crawford Beats David Avanesyan via 6th-Round Knockout to Retain Title

Terence Crawford (39-0) added another name to his lengthy list of beaten opponents, defeating David Avanesyan (29-4-1) via sixth-round knockout in his hometown Omaha, Nebraska.

The two boxers were locked in a tight contest until a swift right hook from Crawford knocked the challenger out cold with 49 seconds left in the round.

Avanesyan appeared to be an aggressive underdog and he didn't disappoint in that department. He tried to take the fight to Crawford in the early going, staying in his face and throwing power punches that were mostly avoided by Crawford.

But that good start for Avanesyan just meant that Crawford understood he had to dial up the pressure. Once he started letting his hands go it was clear why Bud is considered to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

He remained calm in the face of the pressure and eventually figured out what he needed to secure the victory.

A smooth, compact right hand worked right around Avanesyan's guard and ended the night early.

With the win, Crawford retains his WBO welterweight title that he's held since a ninth-round TKO stoppage against Jeff Horn in 2018.

This might not have been the blockbuster boxing fans were hoping for, but it does mark the first time since 2018 that Crawford has fought back-to-back Top 10 opponents as ranked by Transnational Boxing Rankings Board or The Ring since moving up to 147 pounds.

While it's another feather in the impressive cap of Crawford, it's fair for fans to wonder if they will see Bud in a truly massive fight against a fellow top fighter.

Negotiations for a fight with fellow undefeated fighter Errol Spence Jr. (28-0) were reportedly close in the summer. However, the bout that was intended for November didn't come to fruition.

Spence holds the WBA, WBC and IBF welterweight titles, so a fight between the two would presumably be big business for both men.

The good news for fight fans is that Crawford doesn't seem to have lost hope in putting together a fight with Spence.

"We both need this fight," Crawford said, per Morgan Campbell of the New York Times. "The top two fighters in our division that's undefeated, that's in our prime. It's a pick-em fight. It's a 50-50 fight in everybody's eyes. That's what makes it intriguing."

Perhaps with another win under his belt with a raucous home crowd, Crawford will be ready to go back to the negotiation table and give the fans what they want.

Unified welterweight boxing champion Errol Spence Jr. was involved in a car crash on Saturday night, emerging from the wreck unharmed.

Spence went live on Instagram shortly after the wreck, showing video of his damaged vehicle and explaining that he was hit head-on by a 14-year-old who ran a red light after taking his parents' car.

This is at least the third car crash Spence has been involved in since October 2019, according to Jake Donovan of BoxingScene.com.

Spence suffered severe injuries in a single-car accident in October 2019 after he was speeding and lost control of his Ferrari. He was ejected from the vehicle and taken to the hospital before making a full recovery.

The 32-year-old plead guilty to DWI and received a three-day jail sentence. He was also ordered to pay $3,400 in court costs.

Spence also revealed before his bout against Yordenis Ugas in April that he was rear-ended in an accident just three months after he nearly died in the October 2019 crash, per Donovan.

Spence has not fought since his April bout against Ugas. He is 28-0 in his career.

Thomas, Spieth Win Capital One's 'The Match 7' vs. Woods, McIlroy

Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth won the seventh edition of Capital One's The Match Saturday with a 3-and-2 victory over Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida.

The superstar quartet enjoyed some evening golf during the 12-hole competition.

Thomas and Spieth took the lead and never looked back after JT drained a long birdie putt to win the second hole.

Spieth drained a 15-foot birdie putt on the next one to put his team two holes up.

The 455-yard par-four fourth hole featured the one-club challenge. Thomas took centerstage again by making par on a 455-yard hole using nothing but a 5-wood:

JT made an impressive two-putt thanks in part to Spieth and reporter Kathryn Tappen, who both helped lift a cable to get the ball onto the green.

He knocked in a six-footer from there.

Thomas was arguably the star of the show Saturday, as he also delivered the line of the night to Charles Barkley on the next hole.

Neither team won the fifth or sixth holes, but Woods and McIlroy got one back on the par-five seventh after the latter golfer knocked home a 20-foot birdie.

However, Thomas put Woods and McIlroy on the ropes by nailing a 12-foot birdie putt on the par-three eighth for the 3-up lead.

The ninth hole was a heartbreaker for Woods and McIlroy, who each had birdie chances from under 20 feet to win the hole. Neither shot dropped, though, and that duo found itself needing to win the final three holes just to tie.

McIlroy put his team in position to do just that with a birdie, but Spieth matched him to halve the hole and win the match.

Thomas, Spieth and McIlroy made their Match debuts. Woods had played twice, losing to Phil Mickelson in the inaugural competition before teaming with Peyton Manning to defeat Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady.

This year's matchup served to benefit Hurricane Ian relief efforts. The first six editions of The Match have combined to raise almost $33 million for a variety of charitable organizations. In addition, more than 27 million meals have been donated through Feeding America.

Soccer fans from England and across the world were left flabbergasted by Harry Kane's missed penalty kick late in Saturday's 2-1 FIFA World Cup quarterfinal loss to France.

Just minutes after Olivier Giroud's 78th-minute goal gave France a 2-1 lead, Kane made his way to the spot following a foul on England's Mason Mount in the box.

Kane had scored on a penalty in the 54th minute to tie the game and tie him with Wayne Rooney for the most career goals in the history of England's senior national team, but his second PK attempt was sent well over the bar:

While French superstar Kylian Mbappé was elated by the miss, many others were left in disbelief:

Squawka pointed out the disparity between the two penalties Kane took Saturday, and others took the opportunity to poke fun at the British striker's high-pressure miss:

England entered the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as one of the top contenders, but as has been the case for several decades in a row, the squad is going home once again without a trophy.

The Three Lions have only one World Cup title, that being a victory in 1966. Since then, they haven't even managed to reach a final.

They had the better of the play for long stretches Saturday, but they ran into a battle-tested squad in France, which won the World Cup four years ago and is now two wins away from being the first repeat winners since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.

Thanks to Giroud's goal and Kane's miss, France is moving on to the semifinals Wednesday to face one of the biggest Cinderella stories in the history of the World Cup in Morocco.

Morocco held on for a 1-0 win over Portugal on Saturday, making it the first African nation to ever reach the World Cup semifinals. Meanwhile, Argentina and 2018 World Cup runner-up Croatia will meet in the other semifinal.

The most successful underdog in FIFA World Cup history and the reigning champion completed the semifinal field in Qatar with wins on Saturday.

Morocco pulled off yet another upset by taking down Portugal 1-0. The Atlas Lions now have clean sheets against Portugal, Spain, Croatia and Belgium at the World Cup.

The first African side to reach the World Cup semifinals will face France on Wednesday after the French took care of England 2-1.

France and Croatia are both back in the final four, like they were in 2018 with England and Belgium.

The France-Morocco winner will face the Croatia-Argentina winner in the final on Dec. 17.

Morocco 1, Portugal 0

Morocco continued its remarkable run in Qatar by playing the exact same way it has for the entire tournament.

The Atlas Lions put in another incredible defensive shift and took advantage of one mistake to finish off Portugal.

Morocco had 27 percent of the possession and conceded 12 shots to Portugal, with only three on goal.

But Portugal was ineffective with its chances, even when Cristiano Ronaldo entered in the 51st minute.

Morocco netted the only goal of the contest in the 42nd minute, when Youssef En-Nesyri leaped over everyone else in the box and scored on a header.

Portugal failed to do much with its chances in the final third. Ronaldo had one chance in the 91st minute, but that shot went right at Bono in net.

France 2, England 1

France took the lead in the first half through a terrific strike by Aurélien Tchouameni.

The Real Madrid midfielder blasted the long-distance shot perfectly into the bottom left corner past a diving Jordan Pickford.

England did not provide a response until the 54th minute. Harry Kane scorched a penalty into the left side of the net after Bukayo Saka was fouled in the box.

France provided an answer to that goal through Olivier Giroud in the 78th minute. Giroud connected with an Antoine Griezmann cross to beat Pickford.

Griezmann produced an assist on both French goals. The Atlético Madrid forward had an assist in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2018 World Cup before scoring once and assisting twice in the final.

England received a golden opportunity to level again in the 84th minute, when Mason Mount was shouldered by Theo Hernández.

Kane could not recreate the same penalty magic again, as his shot soared over Tottenham teammate Hugo Lloris in goal.

England was unable to produce another chance as opportunistic as the second penalty in the closing stages of the second half.

France is now through to the semifinals once again at the World Cup. Only Morocco stands in the way of Les Bleus' chance to repeat as World Cup winner.

Portugal Manager Has 'No Regrets' About Benching Cristiano Ronaldo at World Cup

Portugal national team coach Fernando Santos stands by his decision to keep Cristiano Ronaldo out of the starting lineup despite the team's 1-0 loss to Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinal.

"I don't think so...no regrets," Santos said, per ESPN's Rob Dawson. "I think this was a team which played very well against Switzerland. Cristiano Ronaldo is a great player; he came in when we thought it was necessary, so no regrets."

Ronaldo was subbed into the match in the 51st minute, but the squad was unable to score the equalizer.

The veteran forward had started each of the team's three group-stage matches before being dropped from the starting lineup in the round-of-16 battle against Switzerland. Gonçalo Ramos took Ronaldo's place and scored three goals in that 6-1 win.

After Tuesday's match, Santos explained that it was a tactical decision to keep Ronaldo on the bench.

"They are different players," the coach told reporters. "It was game strategy."

There were ensuing reports Ronaldo planned to leave the team over the roster move, but the Portuguese Football Federation denied the report.

"Cristiano Ronaldo builds up a unique track record every day at the service of the national team and the country, which must be respected and which attests to the unquestionable degree of commitment to the national team," the statement said.

The dominant win over Switzerland caused Santos to use a similar lineup against Morocco with Ronaldo on the bench. The only change came in the midfield with Rúben Neves starting over William Carvalho.

The move backfired as Portugal struggled to create chances. The team controlled 73.3 percent of possession but only got three shots on goal during the match, via WhoScored.com.

Ronaldo tallied just 11 touches and took one shot in 39 minutes.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were knocked out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by Morocco in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The loss ended a tough stretch of games for Ronaldo. He did not score a goal from open play in Qatar; his lone strike came on a penalty in the group opener against Ghana.

Ronaldo was benched for the second straight game. He entered in the 51st minute and did not offer much until a half-chance near the end of the game.

The 37-year-old likely played his last game at the World Cup on Saturday. It will be difficult for him to maintain a world-class level in four years.

If that was Ronaldo's last game for Portugal, he leaves with a long legacy despite not winning the World Cup. He was part of the team that won Euro 2016 and scored 118 goals in 197 appearances—a record men's international goals total

Peach Bowl 2022: Latest Odds, Prediction for Georgia vs. Ohio State Playoff

If Georgia is going to have an opportunity to try to win a second consecutive national championship, it will first need to get past Ohio State. And that may not be the easiest task.

The Bulldogs and Buckeyes are set to face off in a College Football Playoff semifinal matchup on Dec. 31, when they'll go head-to-head in the Peach Bowl. It should be close to a home atmosphere for Georgia, considering the game will be played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Not only will Ohio State have farther to travel, but it will be looking to pull off an upset. Georgia is the No. 1 seed in the CFP after going 13-0 and winning the SEC championship. Ohio State is the No. 4 seed despite not reaching the Big Ten Championship Game after finishing the regular season at 11-1.

Here's everything else you need to know heading into this year's Peach Bowl.

Latest Peach Bowl Odds

Spread: Georgia -6.5

Over/Under: 62 points

Moneyline: Georgia -260 (bet $260 to win $100); Ohio State +220 (bet $100 to win $220)

Preview, Prediction

Georgia and Ohio State have been two of the top college football programs in recent years. Yet it's been quite some time since the Bulldogs and Buckeyes have crossed paths.

The only previous meeting between Georgia and Ohio State came at the end of the 1992 season, when the Bulldogs defeated the Buckeyes 21-14 in the Citrus Bowl. Could there be a similar result this time?

It's no surprise that Georgia is favorited to win. It stormed through the regular season in impressive fashion, then beat LSU 50-30 in the SEC Championship Game.

The Bulldogs have mostly relied on their dominant defense to win games. They're allowing only 292.1 total yards per contest (ninth best in the country), and they're especially tough against the run, giving up an FBS-low 77 rushing yards per game.

It will be interesting to see whether Georgia's defense can shut down a loaded Ohio State offense led by redshirt sophomore quarterback C.J. Stroud, one of the four finalists for the Heisman Trophy. He'll be looking to frequently get the ball into the hands of talented sophomore wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.

Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart is hoping to see his defense perform better than it did in its last showing against LSU.

"We can't play the defense we played [in the SEC Championship Game] and expect to be any kind of champions," Smart recently said, per Chase Brown of Eleven Warriors.

When Georgia has the ball, it will have a Heisman finalist of its own leading its offense. Sixth-year quarterback Stetson Bennett has again done a strong job of guiding the Bulldogs this year, and he knows what it takes to win when the stakes are raised.

That will be the case for quite a few players on Georgia's roster. The Bulldogs defeated Michigan and Alabama in the College Football Playoff last season to capture the program's first national title since the 1980 season.

Because of that experience and its shutdown defense, Georgia will be heading back to the CFP National Championship Game on Jan. 9. Ohio State could keep things close early in the Peach Bowl, but it's going to get a bit overmatched in the second half.

The Bulldogs will start to pull away late and come up with some big stops, taking down the Buckeyes to move on.

Prediction: Georgia 31, Ohio State 21
