Report: Gio Reyna's Lack of Effort at USMNT Training Resulted in World Cup Benching

Giovanni Reyna was essentially a non-factor for the United States Men's National Team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and it appears his lack of playing time had to do with his effort in training sessions leading up to the tournament.

Sources told The Athletic's Paul Tenorio and Sam Stejskal that Reyna "showed an alarming lack of effort in training" before the USMNT's World Cup opener against Wales on Nov. 21. Further, Reyna's lack of intensity during a scrimmage against Al Gharafa SC on Nov. 17 "caused significant frustration within the team."

During the United States' scrimmage against the Qatari club, Reyna reportedly was "walking around" while he was on the field. His performance was so poor that it was unclear if he was trying to avoid injury or if he was upset about not being named a starter for the opener against Wales.

USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter never subbed in Reyna for the team's match against Wales, a 1-1 draw. After not being put into the game, Reyna threw his shin guards, according to The Athletic, and his lack of effort in training continued heading into the team's second group-stage match against England.

With his effort continuing to be a problem, DeAndre Yedlin and Aaron Long were among the veterans that spoke to Reyna, per The Athletic. Members of the coaching staff also spoke with Reyna before he apologized to the team.

Berhalter, without naming the player, appeared to discuss the situation regarding Reyna last week, saying that the issue was so bad that the team nearly booked him a flight back to the United States:

"In this last World Cup, we had a player that was clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field. One of 26 players, so it stood out. As a staff, we sat together for hours deliberating what we were going to do with this player. We were ready to book a plane ticket home, that's how extreme it was. And what it came down to was, we're going to have one more conversation with him, and part of the conversation was how we're going to behave from here out. There aren't going to be any more infractions.

"But the other thing we said to him was, you're going to have to apologize to the group, but it's going to have to say why you're apologizing. It's going to have to go deeper than just, 'Guys, I'm sorry.' And I prepped the leadership group with this. I said, 'OK, this guy is going to apologize to you as a group, to the whole team.' And what was fantastic in this whole thing is that after he apologized, they stood up one by one and said, 'Listen, it hasn't been good enough. You haven't been meeting our expectations of a teammate and we want to see change.' They really took ownership of that process. And from that day on, there were no issues with this player.

"As a coach, the way you can deal with things most appropriately is going back to your values. Because it's difficult to send a player home. It was going to be a massive controversy. You would have been reading about it for five days straight. But we were prepared to do it, because he wasn't meeting the standards of the group, and the group was prepared to do it as well."

Reyna was subbed in during matches against England and the team's round of 16 match against the Netherlands. He did not play in the USMNT's final group-stage match against Iran. When he was on the field, he wasn't much of a factor for the Americans.

It's important to note that Reyna is just 20 years old and still has plenty of maturing to do. He will likely continue to be part of the USMNT moving forward, and fans will undoubtedly be looking for him to step up during the 2026 World Cup in North America.

Reyna plays his club soccer for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. In 10 matches this season, he has made three starts and tallied two goals.

The Philadelphia Eagles became the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff berth.

Philadelphia earned that distinction with its sixth double-digit victory of the 2022 NFL season after a 48-22 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Eagles gained a game at the top of the NFC standings thanks to the Detroit Lions, who beat the Minnesota Vikings at home.

Detroit also got some help from the Eagles, as it moved closer to the Giants in the NFC wild-card race.

The Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Cincinnati Bengals kept the status quo for the most part in the AFC in the early window of games.

The only surprise was the Tennessee Titans' loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. That result did not affect the playoff standings because the Titans are stuck with the No. 4 seed.

The AFC wild-card race produced the most important moments in the playoff standings on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Chargers beat the Miami Dolphins on Sunday night to leapfrog the New York Jets for the final playoff position.

NFC

Division Leaders

1. Philadelphia (12-1)

2. Minnesota (10-3)

3. San Francisco (9-4)

4. Tampa Bay (6-7)

Wild-Card Race

5. Dallas (10-3)

6. Washington (7-5-1)

7. New York Giants (7-5-1)

8. Seattle (7-6)

9. Detroit (6-7)

10. Green Bay (5-8)

11. Carolina (5-8)

12. Atlanta (5-8)

The Eagles have a two-game lead over the Vikings as well as the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Minnesota is not in trouble yet for the No. 2 seed and the NFC North title.

San Francisco was the most dominant victor on Sunday, as it stomped the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 35-7 in Brock Purdy's first start in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo.

Tampa Bay is still in first place in the NFC South, but that is not much of an achievement since all four members of that division are under .500

The Seattle Seahawks were the biggest loser in terms of the playoff race. They are now 7-6 following a home loss against the Carolina Panthers.

The loss dropped the Seahawks beneath the Washington Commanders and New York Giants. Washington and New York have a half-game edge from their Week 13 tie.

Seattle now has to be concerned about the Lions, who are suddenly one game back of the final wild-card spot in the NFC.

The Seahawks missed an opportunity to gain any ground with the Giants loss and the Commanders bye. Sunday has to go down as a lost chance for Seattle and could hurt it in the final standings.

Green Bay, Carolina and Atlanta will remain two games behind seventh. However, the latter two still have a shot at the NFC South crown and sit just one game behind the Bucs.

AFC

Division Leaders

1. Buffalo (10-3)

2. Kansas City (10-3)

3. Baltimore (9-4)

4. Tennessee (7-6)

Wild-Card Race

5. Cincinnati (9-4)

6. Miami (8-4)

7. Los Angeles Chargers (7-6)

8. New York Jets (7-6)

9. New England (6-6)

10. Jacksonville (5-8)

11. Las Vegas (5-8)

12. Cleveland (5-8)

13. Pittsburgh (5-8)

The top of the AFC remained the same on Sunday.

Buffalo held on to the No. 1 seed with its home win over the New York Jets.

Kansas City stayed ahead of Baltimore with a close win over the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs can clinch the AFC West title with a Chargers loss on Sunday night.

Baltimore is in a worse spot than it was entering Sunday after backup quarterback Tyler Huntley exited the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers with an injury.

The Ravens are still ahead of the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Tennessee's loss to Jacksonville does not mean much in the big picture because the No. 4 seed is still multiple games ahead of the Jaguars.

The Jets' loss in Buffalo opened up the door for the Los Angeles Chargers and New England Patriots to move level on record with them.

The Chargers held on to beat the Dolphins on Sunday night. They moved ahead of the Jets with a better conference record than New York.

Miami's loss did not affect its playoff standing this week. The Dolphins head to Buffalo on Saturday and that game could drag them back into the wild-card bubble.

The New England Patriots could make the wild-card race even more interesting if they beat the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night.

Every team with five wins needs a lot of help to be considered in the playoff conversation over the next four weeks.

Cristiano Ronaldo on World Cup Exit: 'My Dedication to Portugal Has Not Changed'

Dec 11, 2022

Portugal were eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday in a stunning 1-0 quarterfinal loss to Morocco, and veteran forward Cristiano Ronaldo responded to the result in a Facebook post on Sunday.

"I just want you all to know that much has been said, much has been written, much has been speculated, but my dedication to Portugal has not changed, not for a moment," he wrote (via FanNation Futbol). "I was always one fighting for the objective of all and I would never turn my back on my colleagues and my country."

The 37-year-old came off the bench for Portugal's 6-1 round-of-16 win over Switzerland and its loss to Morocco after starting each of the country's three group-stage games.

He scored one goal at the tournament, making him the first player in history to score a goal at five separate World Cups.

"I fought for it," Ronaldo wrote of trying to win a World Cup title. "I fought hard for this dream. In the five appearances I scored in World Cups over 16 years, always by the side of great players and supported by millions of Portuguese, I gave my all. Leave it all out on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream."

Given his age and the fact that Portugal appeared to simply play better for long stretches without him on the pitch, it's fair to question if Ronaldo's international career is winding to a close or if he'll outright call it quits for the national team after Qatar.

There is also uncertainty over his club career after Manchester United terminated his contract ahead of the World Cup following Ronaldo's explosive interview with Piers Morgan. In that interview he blasted the club, the Glazers' ownership and several managers, among others.

It remains to be seen which club will be interested in Ronaldo, a player who is largely limited to being a poacher and an ineffective presser at this point in his career, but one who has become accustomed to large wages.

Reports have suggested that Ronaldo could join Saudi club Al-Nassr on a deal worth €200 million ($210.7 million) per season, though the veteran forward has denied them to this point.

"No, it isn't true," Ronaldo told reporters last week.

So his future, for both club and country, remains in flux.

AEW's Tony Khan Announces Ring of Honor Weekly TV Shows Will Stream on HonorClub

AEW and Ring of Honor owner Tony Khan says ROH's weekly TV program will be broadcast on the HonorClub streaming platform starting in 2023.

Khan made the announcement Saturday during his press conference after the Final Battle pay-per-view.

Since acquiring ROH in March, Khan has regularly featured the promotion on AEW programming. That decision has been controversial, with some feeling the ROH push has watered down the AEW product—particularly its championships.

Khan pushed back on criticisms of ROH being on AEW, saying he's found the criticisms "amusing." With that said, with ROH starting its weekly programming in the coming months, it's probably fair to expect a more focused version of AEW Dynamite moving forward.

HonorClub will cost $9.99 per month and include the entire library of Ring of Honor content, which dates back to 2002. The likes of CM Punk, Brian Danielson and Seth Rollins cut their teeth in the ROH brand, which should give HonorClub plenty of value for wrestling obsessives. Current pay-per-views will be made available 90 days after their airing.

No date has been announced for the launch of ROH's new weekly show. Khan was shopping around hoping to land a television deal, but the relaunch of HonorClub seems like a strong compromise.

MLB Rumors: Yankees Need to Cap Off All-In Offseason by Signing Carlos Correa

If the New York Yankees really want to send a message they are serious about getting over the hump in their quest to get back to the World Series, they need to make a significant push to sign Carlos Correa.

It's not 100 percent certain the Yankees have an interest in Correa, but ESPN's Buster Olney recently floated the possibility that something could be happening:

Everything about the Yankees' offseason was, understandably, centered around re-signing Aaron Judge. They were able to accomplish their mission by getting the 2022 American League MVP to agree to a nine-year, $360 million deal, per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

New York began the offseason by re-signing Anthony Rizzo to a two-year deal worth at least $40 million.

Even though the $400 million spent in free agency to bring back two key players sounds good, the Yankees are slightly worse on paper than they were when the 2022 season ended.

Jameson Taillon left the Bronx to accept a four-year, $68 million deal from the Chicago Cubs. Even though he wasn't a huge factor in the postseason, Gerrit Cole was their only starter who threw more innings than Taillon in 2022.

There are major holes in the lineup that still need to be filled. They received below-average offensive production at shortstop, left field and designated hitter.

Shortstop is the easiest position for the Yankees to upgrade because there are two All-Stars still available: Correa and Dansby Swanson.

There have been no rumblings about Swanson going to New York. Correa ending up in New York still feels like a long shot, but it really shouldn't at this point.

The biggest obstacle preventing the Yankees from pursuing Correa is the competitive balance tax. Hal Steinbrenner has been actively avoiding the tax for years.

Per Spotrac, the Yankees' tax payroll for 2023 is the second-highest in MLB at $221.2 million. The luxury-tax line for next season is $233 million.

Let's assume Correa signs a deal that pays him close to his 2022 salary with the Minnesota Twins ($35.1 million). It would bring the Yankees' payroll up to $256.3 million. They would be taxed 20 percent of their overage total as a first-time offender (roughly $7 million).

The Yankees have around $40 million coming off their luxury-tax payroll in 2024. The CBT jumps up to $237 million in 2024, so any potential penalty they might incur will only be a significant issue for one year.

If the Yankees can't afford a $7 million payment, the Steinbrenner family should sell the franchise.

Even ignoring the small financial penalty for the organization, the upgrade on the field is so significant to offset it.

Correa has been worth 10.6 FanGraphs' wins above replacement over the past two seasons combined. He has a .279/.357/.479 career slash line and averages 28 homers per 162 games played.

Yankees shortstops are projected to be worth a total of 3.7 fWAR in 2023. Anthony Volpe, their top prospect, is projected to be their top player at the position with a .240/.317/.420 slash line.

Volpe's pending arrival doesn't need to complicate things for the Yankees. They can move either him or Correa to third base, which would also allow manager Aaron Boone to bench Josh Donaldson.

Donaldson is 37 and looked his age last season with a .222/.308/.374 slash line.

The Yankees need to be all-in for the next few years while they still have Judge and Gerrit Cole in their prime. It doesn't do them any good to sit on their hands and hope Giancarlo Stanton and Luis Severino are going to stay healthy.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup field has been narrowed to just four teams, and there will be a ferocious battle to see who will be crowned champion in Qatar.

Some of the world's best players and teams have already been eliminated. Harry Kane and England, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal and Neymar and Brazil all were knocked out in the quarterfinals this past week.

However, some of the sport's biggest stars are still in action, and the final is shaping up to be even better than the 2018 final in Russia.

Argentina, Croatia, Morocco and France have proved to be the top four teams in Qatar, and they'll battle it out in the semifinals this week to determine which two teams will be moving on to the final and which two teams will be battling for third place.

So, let's take a look at the upcoming schedule.

2022 FIFA World Cup Schedule

Semifinal 1: Argentina vs. Croatia, Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. ET on Fox

Semifinal 2: France vs. Morocco, Wednesday, Dec. 14 at 2 p.m. ET on Fox

Third-Place Playoff: Semifinal 1 loser vs. Semifinal 2 loser, Saturday, Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. ET on Fox

Final: Semifinal 1 winner vs. Semifinal 2 winner, Sunday, Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. ET on Fox

Preview

When the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar began, not many believed that Croatia, No. 12 in the FIFA rankings, and Morocco, No. 22 in the FIFA rankings, would make the semifinals, and yet here we are.

However, the same cannot be said for Argentina, No. 3 in the rankings, and France, No. 4 in the rankings, as both teams have been dominant for many years.

France, the reigning World Cup champions, are aiming to become the first team since Brazil in 1958 and 1962 to repeat as winners and hoist the trophy in back-to-back tournaments. Led by Kylian Mbappé and Olivier Giroud, Les Bleus have been unstoppable in this year's tournament.

In addition to defeating England, the French have also defeated Australia, Denmark and Poland en route to the semifinals. They only fell to Tunisia in the group stage, and they did not start many of their regulars in that game because they had already qualified for the elimination stages.

To reach the final, France must defeat Morocco, one of the biggest surprises of the tournament.

Morocco's magical World Cup run began in the group stage, when they tied Croatia and defeated Belgium and Canada to win Group F. They then defeated Spain on penalties in the round of 16 before eliminating Portugal 1-0 in the quarterfinals.

France will have its hands full with Morocco, but it is the favorite to advance.

After suffering a 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia in its World Cup opener, Argentina, led by none other than Lionel Messi, has been dominant.

Argentina went on to defeat Mexico, Poland, Australia and the Netherlands en route to a spot in the semifinals. They defeated the Netherlands on penalties on Friday to advance past the quarterfinals.

Argentina will arguably face a tougher opponent in the semifinals when they take on Luka Modrić and Croatia. After reaching the 2018 World Cup final and falling to France, the Croatians are desperate to get back to the final in 2022.

Following a draw against Morocco in their World Cup opener, Croatia has gone on to defeat Canada, tie Belgium and defeat both Japan and Brazil on penalties to advance to the semifinals.

But while Croatia will prove to be a formidable opponent, Argentina is favored to advance to the final for the first time since 2014, when they fell to Germany 1-0 in Brazil.

If Argentina makes it to the final, it will do anything possible to get Messi, considered the best player in the world, his first World Cup title in what will be his final World Cup tournament.

(Russian Federal Security Service via AP)

WNBA star Brittney Griner reportedly spent about 12 hours of an 18-hour flight from Russia back to the United States speaking with members of the flight crew and people on the plane, according to special presidential envoy for hostage affairs Roger Carstens.

"I was left with the impression this is an intelligent, passionate, compassionate, humble, interesting person, a patriotic person," Carstens said of CNN's State of the Union Sunday (h/t ESPN). "But above all, authentic. I hate the fact that I had to meet her in this manner, but I actually felt blessed having had a chance to get to know her."

Carstens added Griner was "full of energy, looked fantastic."

Griner, 32, had been detained in Russia for 10 months after Russian authorities said they found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport in February. The U.S. State Department's official stance said she had been "wrongfully detained."

Griner was released this past week as part of a prisoner swap with Russia.

Floyd Mayweather Called out by Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship Star Luis Palomino

Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship fighter Luis Palomino told TMZ Sports that he wants a bout against boxing star Floyd Mayweather.

"I'm looking for the big money fight," Palomino said. "My biggest one that I have in mind, and I think it makes perfect sense, will be Mayweather."

The 42-year-old said he would go into Mayweather's "world" and put on gloves for a legitimate boxing match.

Palomino competed in MMA before joining BKFC in 2020, thriving in the new competition with a 7-0 record and titles in both the lightweight and welterweight division. He is considered the pound-for-pound champion in the organization.

His problem has been the lack of legitimate competitors within bareknuckle fighting.

"I've called out several names in the BKFC and crickets," Palomino said. "I called out Chad Mendes in three consecutive fights when they signed him, and I heard nothing."

Mayweather, considered one of the best boxers of all time, would certainly pose a challenge. The 45-year-old retired in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record, although he has competed in three exhibitions over the past year and could add a matchup against Palomino to the schedule.

Shawn Michaels Discusses New Day's WWE Future After Winning NXT Tag Team Titles

Shawn Michaels is hoping The New Day's reign as NXT tag team champions proves to be a major boost for the brand.

Michaels spoke to reporters after Saturday's NXT Deadline event, saying he's hopeful Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston will feature the championships on SmackDown and be part of the brand's next premium live event.

"As best that I understand it right now, The New Day is still a part of SmackDown, so our titles should definitely be represented. That crossover that we had in the last several months is going to continue," Michaels said.

"... I absolutely have to think about selling those tickets in Charlotte [for Vengeance Day] and finding out what we can do to best help that. At this point right now, I can't say that I know that New Day is going to be a part of that, but I can promise you I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that they are because that's something that's going to be beneficial in making that premium live event in Charlotte something special."

The New Day defeated Pretty Deadly at Deadline in what became a record-setting performance for Kofi Kingston. The former WWE champion is now a 15-time tag champion, breaking a record he shared with Booker T.

The surprising move to NXT is a welcome change for the New Day, which had largely been spinning its wheels for months. A classic title match against The Usos aside, Woods and Kingston have largely been relegated outside the top of the tag team picture while remaining one of the most over acts in the company.

It's unclear when or if Big E will return to WWE programming, but it would be fun to see the former NXT champion make an appearance with Woods and Kingston now plying their trade in Orlando.
