Bengals Finally Banish Super Bowl Hangover and Look Like Genuine NFL Title Contenders

For a time this season, it appeared that the Cincinnati Bengals were going to be the latest victim of the "Super Bowl hangover" that has often plagued losers of football's biggest game in the past. The Bengals dropped their first two matchups of the season and were just 4-4 at the eight-game mark.

But something happened after the Bengals were embarrassed by the Browns in Cleveland on Halloween. Maybe it was getting thumped by a mediocre division rival or a matter of things falling into place. But the Bengals dropped a piano on the Carolina Panthers the following Sunday, and they haven't lost a game since.

On Sunday, the Bengals faced their stiffest test of the season as Patrick Mahomes and the AFC-leading Kansas City Chiefs came to town. In beating the Chiefs for a third straight time, the Bengals served notice to the rest of the league.

If there was a hangover, it's long gone now. These Bengals are every bit as good as last year's team and quite possibly better. And what's more, Cincinnati is playing as well as any team in the NFL as we head into December and the stretch run.

As Charlie Goldsmith wrote for the Cincinnati Enquirer before Sunday's rematch of last year's AFC Championship Game, Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said he expected the same thing most fans and pundits did—an exciting, back-and-forth affair between two of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL.

"Anytime you get premiere players like Mahomes and Burrow together and in a game, it's just great for competition," Callahan said. "It's great for the sport. If you're a fan, it's got to be exciting to want to go watch that. They're just two really, really talented competitors."

He wasn't wrong. Sunday's game absolutely lived up to the hype, with Burrow and Mahomes exchanging haymakers. For the third time in as many meetings, it was Burrow who was the last man standing.

Outplaying Patrick Mahomes is no small feat, but Burrow did it again Sunday. He completed 25 of 31 passes for 286 yards and two scores while rushing for a third touchdown. Burrow's passer rating for the game was 128.6—over 30 points higher than Mahomes'. Every time the Chiefs appeared on the brink of taking over the game, Burrow calmly put together a drive.

Burrow didn't do it himself, of course.

With running back Joe Mixon on the shelf for a second successive week because of a concussion, reserve running back Samaje Perine came up big with 21 carries, half a dozen catches and over 150 total yards. In his first game since injuring his hip in Week 7, Ja'Marr Chase looked to be as dangerous and explosive as ever, catching seven of eight targets for 97 yards. Tee Higgins, who stepped into the No. 1 role while Chase was out, chipped in three catches for 35 yards and a score. Slot receiver Tyler Boyd posted four catches for 60 yards.

It was a reminder just how loaded the Cincinnati offense is with skill-position talent. But any symphony is only as good as its conductor, and Chase told reporters after the win that there's no one he'd rather have leading the Cincinnati offense than his former LSU teammate.

"He (Burrow) is the best quarterback in the league," Chase said. "That's a fact."

As much as Burrow benefitted from having his full complement of weapons back, the offensive line in front of him may have been even more important. At first glance, the 32 sacks Burrow has taken this season seems like a lot. But 13 of those 32 sacks came over the first two games of the season.

In the nine games since, Burrow has been dropped 19 times, including just once against Kansas City. That isn't great, but it's…average. And average is light-years better than last year's turnstile up front.

As he showed Sunday, give Burrow time in the pocket and he will carve up just about any defense he faces.

Cincinnati's defense deserves credit, too. Heading into Week 13, Mahomes had surpassed 300 passing yards in five straight games. In two of those contests, he topped 400 passing yards. He also threw at least three touchdown passes three times over that span.

But just as in last year's playoffs, the Bengals used a lot of eight-man coverage looks against Mahomes on Sunday. It worked yet again, as Mahomes threw for a pedestrian 230 yards with one score. All told, Kansas City had 349 yards of offense—81 yards below their season average.

It was a hard-fought, all-around effort. But while Burrow praised his team's performance while speaking to Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports, he also insisted that it's just one step in a much bigger journey.

"We just have guys who know what it takes to win," Burrow said. "Who know what it takes every week in practice to grind. To come out here in a moment like this in front of this crowd and come out with a big win. That being said, that's all it is. A big win. We've got several more coming up. It was a fun one, but I know we'll be seeing them again."

He's right of course. The reality is that if you want to make it through the AFC bracket, at some point you are probably going to have to take on Mahomes and the Chiefs. Cincinnati also has a brutal schedule the rest of the way.

After next week's rematch with the Browns, Cincinnati's last four opponents all made the playoffs in 2022—at Tampa Bay, at New England and then home against Buffalo and Baltimore. That Week 18 matchup with the Ravens could well be for the AFC North title.

But the Bengals team we saw Sunday is capable of thriving in that gauntlet. The Bengals are as balanced as they are loaded on offense. The defense has talent at all three levels, whether it's Sam Hubbard and Trey Hendrickson up front, Logan Wilson at linebacker or Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell on the back end.

And these Bengals are battle-tested after last year's Super Bowl run. They don't shrink in big moments. They also have one of the best young quarterbacks in the NFL—a megastar in the making. As Higgins said before the game, the Bengals believe they will win every time they step on the field.

"I believe in our offense," he said. "I believe in the firepower that we've got."

It's high time we believe in the Bengals, too, and not just as a threat to make it back to the Super Bowl, either.

They're a team that could win it.

Joe Burrow Dominance over Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Praised After Bengals' Win vs. KC

The Cincinnati Bengals defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 27-24 on Sunday at Paycor Stadium to move to 8-4 on the season and create more of a cushion for themselves in the playoff race.

Much of the win can be attributed to quarterback Joe Burrow, who completed 25-of-31 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 46 yards and a score on 11 carries.

Burrow outdueled Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who completed just 16-of-27 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown, in addition to rushing for nine yards and a score on two carries.

Bengals running back Samaje Perine also had a tremendous performance filling in for Joe Mixon, who was sidelined by a concussion. Perine rushed for 106 yards on 21 carries and caught six passes for 49 yards.

Still, it was Burrow who impressed NFL Twitter the most, and now he's being praised for his dominance over the Chiefs:

https://twitter.com/BrandoStarkey/status/1599559956558385152

Burrow is now 3-0 in his career against the Chiefs, averaging 327 passing yards per game against Kansas City along with tossing nine total touchdowns and one interception.

The Burrow vs. Mahomes debate has a long way to go, but the Bengals quarterback certainly has a leg up on his Chiefs counterpart right now.

Cincinnati, though tied with the Baltimore Ravens atop the AFC North, is currently occupying the AFC's fifth playoff seed, ahead of the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets. The New England Patriots and Los Angeles Chargers are on the playoff bubble, so the Bengals must keep winning to hold off the field and keep their hopes alive of surpassing the Ravens.

Bengals' Hayden Hurst to Justin Reid: I'm Last Person 'You Want to Talk S--t About'

Ahead of their game on Sunday, Cincinnati Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst fired back at Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid on Thursday in retaliation for a perceived slight.

While speaking to Fox 4 in Kansas City (h/t ProFootballTalk's Michael David Smith), Reid talked about his intention to shut down Hurst, but twice got the tight end's name wrong: "They have 88 Higbee—no, not Higbee, he's with the Rams—what's his name? It's Higgins, yeah they're gonna have him back, he's a very talented receiver, more of a finesse type of guy, not the best blocker, I'm gonna lock him down."

Reid first confused Hurst with Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee, before referring to him as "Higgins," which is actually the name of Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins.

When asked about Reid's comments by the media on Thursday, Hurst suggested the safety would ultimately eat his words:

Hurst called Reid's remarks "funny" before adding: "You can pick anybody in this locker room, but I feel like I'm the last person you want to talk s--t about because I have a long memory."

The Bengals and Chiefs cultivated a rivalry last season when Cincinnati beat Kansas City by three points late in the regular season and then did it again in the AFC Championship Game.

When the Bengals and Chiefs meet again on Sunday, it will mark the first taste of the rivalry for Hurst and Reid, who are in their first seasons with their respective teams.

Hurst signed with the Bengals in free agency after spending the previous two seasons with the Atlanta Falcons, while Reid signed with the Chiefs after a four-year stint with the Houston Texans.

Much of the Chiefs' defensive focus will be on wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, who is returning to the Bengals' lineup after missing the past four games with a hip injury, but they can ill afford to turn a blind eye to Hurst.

He has become something of a security blanket for quarterback Joe Burrow this season, making 46 catches for 388 yards and two touchdowns, and he could be an unexpected difference-maker on Sunday.

While Hurst was likely already motivated to leave his mark, Reid's comments may give him an even greater desire to deliver.

Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase on Injury Return vs. Chiefs: 'I Don't Think I Can Be Stopped'

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase has huge expectations for himself ahead of his return to the lineup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Chase, who has missed the past four games with a hairline hip fracture, said the following about his return Thursday when speaking to reporters: "I don't think I can be stopped, if I'm being honest. I'm out there playing football, playing my game. So when I'm in a rhythm, on a roll and I'm just playing, you know the timing's there and I'm just playing football."

During a Week 6 win over the New Orleans Saints, Chase suffered the injury, but he returned during that game and also played the following week in a win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Despite being less than 100 percent, Chase combined for 15 receptions for 262 yards and four touchdowns in those contests. He landed on the shelf, but the Bengals were able to stay afloat with a 3-1 record while he was out.

Now, Chase says he is feeling "great," which is potentially bad news for a Chiefs defense he torched twice last season.

In a 34-31 regular-season win over KC in Chase's rookie year, he went off to the tune of 11 receptions for 266 yards and three scores, marking one of the signature performances of his Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign.

Then, in a 27-24 win by Cincinnati over Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game, Chase had a more modest six catches for 54 yards, but he once again scored a touchdown.

Chase is perhaps the biggest key to the Bengals beating the Chiefs for the third time in two seasons and improving Cincinnati's overall record this season to 8-4.

Quarterback Joe Burrow is at his best when he has his full allotment of weapons, and on Sunday he will have the benefit of throwing to Chase, Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.

The Chiefs have the best record in the AFC this season at 9-2, but if Chase has one of his typical performances, it will open the door for the Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins and other teams to vie for the No. 1 seed.

NFL Rumors: Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase to Return from Injury for Showdown vs. Chiefs

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase plans on returning from his hip injury to play in Sunday's contest against the Kansas City Chiefs, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Chase suffered the hip injury in a Week 7 win over the Atlanta Falcons, and the Bengals have gone 3-1 in his absence. The 22-year-old caught 47 passes for 605 yards and six touchdowns in seven games before he got hurt.

Fortunately, the Bengals still had plenty of other options for quarterback Joe Burrow, including Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd and tight end Hayden Hurst.

Chase, the 2021 Offensive Rookie of the Year, didn't miss any time last season, catching 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns in 17 games.

The Bengals are 7-4 this season, tied for first place with the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North. While they have proven they can win without him, having Chase back will only elevate their ceiling as they look to return to the Super Bowl for the second straight season.

Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase Reportedly Out vs. Titans amid Hip Injury Recovery

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase will miss Sunday's game against the Tennessee Titans, according to theScore's Jordan Schultz.

The 22-year-old has not played since Cincinnati's Week 7 win against the Atlanta Falcons because of a hip injury. The last time he was on the field, he registered another dominant performance with eight catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns.

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow told reporters Wednesday he expected Chase to be ready to go for the Week 12 matchup against the Titans.

Prior to being injured, the LSU product was settling into a groove following a slow start. He recorded back-to-back 100-yard games after going four consecutive outings without reaching the century mark.

Through his seven appearances this season, he has 47 catches for 605 yards and six touchdowns.

Chase is one of the most dynamic receivers in the league. However, the Bengals have found a way to overcome his absence, going 2-1 while he's been sidelined. In its last two victories, Cincinnati has averaged 39.5 points per game.

Without the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in the lineup, Burrow has relied on Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd as his primary targets. Higgins leads the team with 712 receiving yards.

Getting Chase back to full health is imperative for the Bengals if they hope to make another deep playoff run this season in the competitive AFC.

Samaje Perine's Updated Bengals Fantasy Outlook After 3-TD Game, Joe Mixon Injury

Joe Mixon left Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a concussion, leaving the door open for Samaje Perine to ascend to the top of the depth chart.

Mixon has missed time in four of his five NFL seasons, including 10 games in 2020. Perine will be an interesting pickup if Mixon isn't cleared from the concussion protocol in time for Week 12's matchup with the Tennessee Titans.

Perine has a legitimate RB2 ceiling if he's forced into the starting role. He torched the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, with nine carries for 27 yards and four catches for 52 yards and three scores at the time of publication.

It's unlikely he'll make that sort of impact in the passing game again—he came into the contest with three receiving touchdowns over the course of his entire five-year career. And the Bengals may turn to a heavier passing attack without Mixon available.

But Perine will still be the starter, and he's proved he can make an impact as a receiver out of the backfield. Monitor Mixon carefully this week—if he's trending toward being out, Perine is a must-add option on waivers and would be a solid flex option if he's forced into starting duty.

Keep him high on your list of priorities this week.

Bengals' Joe Mixon Ruled Out vs. Steelers After Suffering Concussion

Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon has been ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers after suffering a concussion, the team announced.

Mixon had carried the ball seven times for 20 yards and caught three passes for 42 yards before being forced to exit the game.

The Oklahoma product is the featured back in the Cincinnati offense. Entering Sunday, Mixon had racked up 585 yards and six touchdowns on 151 carries through nine games. He led the team with 292 carries for 1,205 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2021. Mixon ranked third in the NFL in rushing yards and fourth in rushing touchdowns. He also added 42 receptions for 418 yards and three scores.

Mixon and the Bengals made a surprising run to Super Bowl LVI last season, where they fell to the Los Angeles Rams 23-20. Mixon wasn't on the field for Cincinnati's final offensive drive, but he came to an understanding with head coach Zac Taylor this offseason.

The Bengals selected Mixon in the second round of the 2017 draft with the 48th overall pick. His draft stock dropped, with some teams removing him from their boards completely, because of a misdemeanor assault charge in October 2014 that caused him to be suspended for his entire freshman season at Oklahoma. He was also suspended for one game by the Sooners in 2016 after a parking citation incident.

Mixon emerged as Cincinnati's lead running back in his second season. He ran for 1,168 and eight touchdowns that year and then followed up with 1,137 and five scores in his third season. He was limited to six games in 2020 because of a foot injury.

Without the San Francisco native in the lineup, the Bengals are missing a true workhorse running back. Backup Samaje Perine saw limited action last season, though he's been solid when given opportunities this year.

If Mixon were to miss any time, Cincinnati is likely to lean on the passing game while he recovers. Quarterback Joe Burrow will have to rely on Tee Higgins in the absence of Ja'Marr Chase, who is still out with a hip injury.

Report: Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase 'Has a Chance to Play' vs. Titans amid Injury Rehab

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase could return to the team ahead of its Week 12 game against the Tennessee Titans, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported Chase is off crutches and "actually has a chance to play" next week.

In his second NFL season, the 22-year-old has missed two games already due to a hip injury, and Sunday's clash against the Pittsburgh Steelers will be his third straight absence. He was initially injured in a Week 6 game against the New Orleans Saints and attempted to play through the ailment but aggravated it a week later.

The Bengals never placed the LSU product on injured reserve, which would have kept him out a minimum of four games.

Chase is one of the most dynamic receivers in football, compiling 47 receptions for 605 yards and six touchdowns in seven games played this season. Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd have been given a more extended role in his absence.

NFL Rumors: Ja'Marr Chase Targeting Return from Hip Injury for Bengals vs. Titans

The Cincinnati Bengals are reportedly "hopeful" wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase will be able to return from a hip injury for a Week 12 game against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on Nov. 27.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday sources have "circled that game as a potential relaunch" for Chase, who last played in Week 7. Fowler noted there's "no definitive plan" despite the baseline optimism, though.

Cincinnati faces the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road Sunday as it returns from a Week 10 bye.

The 22-year-old wide receiver is in his second NFL season. Through seven games, he has amassed 47 receptions for 605 yards and six touchdowns. That follows a rookie year in which he snagged 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 scores.

The Bengals won the AFC North in 2021 en route to the conference title, and the former LSU star appeared to be ready to help lead them on another playoff run after Cincinnati won four of his last five games.

Unfortunately, though, Chase suffered a hairline hip fracture and torn labrum that forced him off the field, per Jordan Schultz of theScore.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the hip injury occurred on Oct. 16 against the New Orleans Saints and was reaggravated on Oct. 23 against the Atlanta Falcons. He also reported that the 2021 Pro Bowler was expected to miss four-to-six weeks.

Despite the recovery timeline, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor revealed that Chase would not go on injured reserve, which would've kept him out for at least four games.

"The overall prognosis of how it could play out factors into that," he said.

Without Chase, the Bengals rely more on Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd. Mike Thomas has also seen an increase in snaps.
