Dustin Johnson is very, very good at golf.

The world No. 1 won the Masters on Sunday after shooting a brilliant 20 under par for the tournament, putting him five strokes clear of Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im and setting a tournament record for best score in the process.

That earned Johnson the first green jacket of his career, his second major championship and an extremely lucrative pay day.

Here were the payouts for Johnson and the other top-10 finishers:

  • First: Dustin Johnson, $2,070,000
  • Second: Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im, $1,012,000 each
  • Fourth: Justin Thomas, $552,000
  • Fifth: Rory McIlroy and Dylan Frittelli, $437,000 each
  • Seventh: C.T. Pan, Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm, $358,417 each
  • 10th: Webb Simpson, Corey Conners and Patrick Reed, $287,500 each

With his win, Johnson also secured 600 FedEx Cup points, while Smith and Im took home 270 each.

Johnson will enjoy his cool $2 million payday—good money if you can get it. But on Sunday, he was far more preoccupied with the weight of winning one of golf's most prestigious tournaments, showing a rare burst of emotion in his post-round interview.

It was a surprise to see the normally chill and composed Johnson struggle to even speak, so overcome with emotion. That's how much winning at Augusta meant to him.

"It means so much to me... it means so much to my family, Paulina, the kids," he said. "They know it's something that I've always been dreaming about, and it's why I work so hard. To finally have the dream come true, I think that's why you see all that emotion."

Anybody would be happy with a $2 million payday. But lost in the money and the spectacle and industry that has been built around professional sports is how hard professional athletes work at their craft, all in an effort to reach the top of their respective sport and to realize a dream. Sometimes, the human side gets lost in the stats and figures.

Not on Sunday. Johnson showed just how much the green jacket was worth to him.

Dustin Johnson delivered a masterful performance at Augusta National Golf Club to win his second major on Sunday.

The 2020 Masters champion carded two rounds of 65 and a fourth-round 68 to finish with the lowest overall score in tournament history.

Johnson's victory was the culmination of a four-year hunt to land his second major crown after coming close on countless occasions since winning the 2016 U.S. Open.

The 36-year-old finished five shots ahead of Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im, and the difference between him and the bottom of the top 10 was 11 strokes.

Johnson's victory ended a run of majors in which he failed to finish on top after holding the 54-hole lead.

The Columbia, South Carolina native previously held four third-round leads and did not convert them into titles. He said on Sunday that his run at the Masters proved he could win after holding the third-round lead, per Jim Litke of the Associated Press.

"I proved to myself that I do have it because I'm sure a lot of y'all think ... like, when am I going to have the lead and finish off the golf tournament or finish off a major?" he said.

Johnson started his round with two birdies, two bogeys and two pars in the first six holes. After that stretch, he did not drop a shot.

He went on to record four more birdies to finish with a final-round 68 and tie for the lowest score to par in a major championship, per ESPN Stats and Info:

Johnson's brother and caddie, Austin, was caught getting emotional after he became a two-time major winner, per CBS Sports:

According to the official Masters Twitter account, the Johnsons became the third family combination to win at Augusta:

Sunday's victor got emotional after the round ended, as he tried to explain to CBS Sports' Amanda Balionis what winning the green jacket meant to him:

"It's hard to talk," Johnson said. "It's just incredible as you can tell. I've never had this much trouble gathering myself. On the golf course, I'm pretty good at it. Here, I'm not."

His win Sunday made it seven majors in a row with a different champion. No golfer has won two majors in a season since Brooks Koepka in 2018.

Johnson was close to earning the PGA Championship title in August but lost the 54-hole lead to Collin Morikawa on the back nine. He now has six top-10 placings in his last eight majors. He finished in a tie for second at the PGA and in a tie for sixth at the U.S. Open.

His victory also extended a remarkable run of form at Augusta, where he has five consecutive top-10 finishes.

Johnson will not have to wait long to try to extend that run since the Masters will be the first major on the 2021 calendar on its traditional April date.

Masters Leaderboard 2020: Twitter Reacts to Results and Standings from Sunday

Dustin Johnson didn't just win the Masters on Sunday, he did so in dominant, historic fashion, finishing the tournament at 20 under par. That is the best score in the history of golf's signature event.

Johnson exceeded the previous record of 18 under posted by Tiger Woods in 1997 and Jordan Spieth in 2015. His four bogeys were the fewest a champion has ever hit at Augusta, according to ESPN Stats & Info. It was a startling performance and certainly an impressive way for Johnson to earn his first Masters title.

Suffice to say, the reaction on Twitter was one of awe:

It wasn't just folks on social media who were taken with Johnson's dominance.

"He's an amazing athlete," Woods told reporters. "He's one of the first guys to ever bring athleticism to our sport. DJ has just an amazing ability to stay calm in tough moments."

For Johnson, Sunday was a bucket-list moment.

"The Masters to me is the biggest tournament and the one I wanted to win the most," a tearful Johnson said after his win. "I was nervous all day. I'm very proud of the way I handled myself and finished off the golf tournament. This is a dream come true."

In most years, the 15 under that runners-up Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im shot would have been enough to win the tournament. Since 2010, that score would have been good enough to win seven Masters and tie one more. Only Johnson, Spieth and Phil Mickelson (-16 in 2010) have posted better scores in the last 11 Masters.

That's perhaps the most startling stat of all from Johnson's Masters—there were players who played well enough to win most years, and he still bested them by five strokes.

Justin Thomas (-12), Rory McIlroy (-11) and Dylan Frittelli (-11) rounded out the top five. McIlroy's ascension back up the leaderboard was particularly impressive considering he shot a 75 in the first round, digging himself a major hole. Had he started stronger, perhaps he would have given Johnson a run for his money.

Then again, probably not. There is no better golfer on planet earth than Johnson at the moment.

Masters 2020: Top Quotes and Takeaways from Final Round of Major

The green jacket has been a long time coming for Dustin Johnson.

The world's top-ranked golfer finished the first Masters victory of his career with a four-under 68 to bring his total to 20 under par. He was five strokes clear of Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im for his second major title, and Cameron Morfit of PGATour.com noted the 20-under mark broke the Masters record of 18 under.

Tiger Woods, who presented Johnson with the green jacket as last year's winner, and Jordan Spieth held the previous record.

"Well, I proved that I can get it done on Sunday with the lead at a major, especially in tough conditions," Johnson said in a post-round interview with CBS's Amanda Balionis (h/t Morfit). "... There were doubts in my mind, just because I had been there. I'm in this position a lot of times. Like when am I going to have the lead and finish off the golf tournament or finish off a major? For me, it definitely proved that I can do it."

That Johnson shed his final-round struggles and delivered under the Sunday pressure was the biggest takeaway of the entire tournament.

As Morfit explained, he failed to win his previous four majors in which he possessed at least a share of the 54-hole lead. There has been a collapse at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship, and much of his career was defined by what could have been on the major stage.

No longer.

"I always dreamed of having one of those," Johnson said of a green jacket, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN). "Now I got one."

There wasn't much drama, as he cruised to victory down the stretch. Still, he was understandably feeling the pressure as he looked to finish the biggest win of his career.

"I was nervous all day," he said, per Paul Gittings of CNN. "I could feel it. The Masters to me is the biggest tournament, it's the one I wanted to win the most. I'm just very proud of the way I handled myself and the way I finished off the golf tournament."

Having arguably the greatest golfer in history give him the green jacket made it all the more memorable.

"Honestly, it still feels like a dream," Johnson said, per Gittings. "As a kid, dreaming about winning and having Tiger put the green jacket on you, it still seems like it's a dream, but I'm here and what a great feeling it is and I couldn't be more excited."

Another takeaway involved Woods, as his days of winning the Masters may be in the rearview mirror.

He turns 45 years old next month and has struggled of late, missing the cut at the U.S. Open and tying for 72nd at the Zozo Championship. The last time he finished better than a tie for 37th place was in January's Farmers Insurance Open.

Woods shot a four-over 76 in Sunday's round and looked like a weekend hacker with a 10 on the par-three 12th. Steve DiMeglio of Golfweek noted it was the highest score on a single hole in Woods' PGA Tour career.

"I committed to the wrong wind," Woods said, per DiMeglio. "From there I hit a lot more shots and had a lot more experiences there in Rae's Creek. This sport is awfully lonely sometimes. You have to fight it. No one is going to bring you off the mound or call in a sub. That's what makes this game so unique and so difficult mentally. We’ve all been there. Unfortunately I've been there and you just have to turn around and figure out the next shot, and I was able to do that coming home."

The one silver lining for the 15-time major winner was the fact that he birdied his final four holes.

Perhaps he can parlay that into some momentum in the quicker-than-usual turnaround before the next Masters in April.

Dustin Johnson shot a record-setting 20 under en route to winning the Masters on Sunday at Augusta National Golf Club.

Johnson had tied the 54-hole Masters record that Jordan Spieth set in 2015 at 16 under. He finished Sunday alone with the 72-hole record, which Spieth (2015) and Tiger Woods (1997) previously co-owned at 18 under.

DJ shot a four-under 68 on Sunday to earn his first green jacket. That mark was good enough for a five-shot edge over second-place finishers Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im.

The world No. 1 golfer is now a two-time major winner after taking the 2016 U.S. Open.

The 36-year-old will take home $2,070,000 for his efforts as the Masters' first-place finisher. You can find the top 10 winners and prize payouts below as well as a quick recap and highlights of Sunday's action.

Sunday Recap and Highlights

Johnson entered Sunday with a four-shot lead over Smith and Im, but he was close to losing that entire advantage after shooting one over through five holes. During that stretch, Im made two birdies to get to 14 under and within one shot of Johnson.

However, DJ settled down from there, bouncing back with a birdie on the par-three No. 6 before knocking home another one on the par-five eighth.

Johnson knocked in four straight pars before Amen Corner, where he started a string of birdies from the 13th through 15th holes to put the tournament away.

As for Smith, the 27-year-old became the only golfer to ever shoot three-under 69 or better in all four rounds at the Masters.

The Australian exhibited some wizardry on the front nine to help him achieve that goal:

In most years, his performance would have been good enough to take home a green jacket, but Johnson took advantage of low-scoring conditions to win outright by five shots.

The 22-year-old Im looked as though he would challenge Johnson for a brief moment during the final round. He was two under through five holes, which included back-to-back birdies.

That equated to a three-shot swing, but consecutive bogeys on the sixth and seventh holes significantly hurt the South Korean's chances.

Still, he was excellent in his Masters debut—to the point where he now owns a record:

Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy lurked as potential party spoilers if Johnson had collapsed, but they were never seriously in contention.

Thomas couldn't get much going with an even-par 36 on the front nine. He did finish relatively strong on the back nine with a two-under 34, including an eagle on No. 15, to take fourth by himself.

McIlroy got hot on the front nine with a three-under 33, putting himself in position to potentially threaten for second. A bogey on the 10th hurt his momentum, and he managed just one birdie for the remainder of the round.

He tied for fifth with Dylan Frittelli, who had a roller-coaster Masters that included a seven-under 65 on Thursday and five-under 67 on Saturday. The South African only shot one over otherwise, but that was good enough for a fifth-place tie in an overall impressive showing.

A little over a year-and-a-half after he lost to Tiger Woods by a single stroke, Dustin Johnson finally got to slip on the coveted green jacket and join golf's most illustrious fraternity Sunday afternoon.

Haunted by near-misses and late collapses in major tournaments, Johnson had neither this weekend in Augusta, Georgia, where he carded two seven-under-par 65s and led or tied for the lead after each round. His 20-under finish is the lowest 72-hole score in the 74-year history of the event, eclipsing the 18-under mark set by Tiger Woods in 1997 and tied by Jordan Spieth in 2015. Johnson's four bogeys over four rounds were also the fewest in the event's history.

The victory celebration was not completely silent, but it was largely muted compared to previous years because only Augusta National Golf Club members and the families of players were allowed in the gallery. During what sounded like slightly more animated practice rounds, Johnson fought off impressive 15-under performances from Australian Cameron Smith and 22-year-old Sungjae Im, who had just one PGA win on his resume and was playing at the Masters for the first time in his five-year career.

Johnson's winnings, a cool $2.07 million, nearly equal the $2,176,475 he made in his previous nine combined Masters appearances.

2020 Masters Prize Money Payout

Total purse: $11.5 million

1st: Dustin Johnson, $2,070,000

T-2nd: Cameron Smith, Sungjae Im, $1,012,000

4th: Justin Thomas, $552,000

T-5th: Rory McIlroy, Dylan Frittelli, $437,000

T-7th: C.T. Pan, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, $358,417

T-10th: Webb Simpson, Corey Conners, Patrick Reed, $287,500

Justin Thomas, whose previous best finish at the Masters was a tie for 12th place last year, finished fourth at 12 under, while the world's fifth-ranked player, Rory McIlroy, finished in a tie for fifth place with South African Dylan Frittelli.

Abraham Ancer, who started the day 12 under and in the thick of contention, imploded in the final round, shooting a four-over 76 and dropping to a tie for 13th. He likely wouldn't have been able to catch Johnson, but had he just shot even par and finished in a tie for fourth place, Ancer would've gone home with $506,000—or nearly $291,000 more than he did by finishing tied for 13th.

The two players who entered the tournament with the most buzz—Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau—never posed a serious threat.

Woods, who took home a $2.07 million prize last year equal to Johnson's, finished in a six-way tie for 38th place. DeChambeau, the 2020 U.S. Open winner, finished in a tie for 34th after shooting a final-round one-over 73. The hard-hitting DeChambeau joked earlier in the week that he would play the course as a par-67 instead of a par-72 to give other competitors a chance. He might've been better off with playing it five strokes the other way instead.

For Johnson, who grew up a little less than 100 miles from Augusta and envisioned someday winning golf's most prestigious event, his 10th trip—even if it came a few months later than usual—was the charm.

"Growing up as a kid, being only about an hour away from here, hitting chips or putts, it was always to win the Masters," the South Carolina native said earlier in the week. "It was what we dreamed about winning."

Dustin Johnson finally shook the demons from the tournaments in which he blew 54-hole leads.

The 36-year-old won his second major title at the Masters by cruising through the fourth round and finishing at a record-low number.

Johnson won at Augusta National Golf Club with a final score of 20 under that was finished off by a four-under 68.

The win marked the first time in five attempts the South Carolina native has won a major after securing the lead after three rounds. The last loss of that kind occurred this year at the PGA Championship.

Johnson's Sunday 68 was his third round in the 60s and pushed him to the lowest four-round score in Masters history.

CBS Sports HQ pointed out that Johnson's 20-under tournament score was two better than Jordan Spieth's in 2015 and the one earned by Tiger Woods in 1997:

According to ESPN Stats & Info, the 20 under is the one of the three best scores in major history. Henrik Stenson and Jason Day have the other victories at 20 under:

The other bit of history made by Johnson was that he became the first No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking to win at Augusta since Woods in 2002, per the PGA Tour:

Johnson's dominant performance started with a first-round 65, and he surged into the lead with another 65 on Saturday.

The Masters victory gave Johnson three top-six finishes at majors in 2020. He also won the FedEx Cup in September.

Not only does the victory cement a fantastic season, it creates plenty of momentum going into the 2021 season. The first major next season will be back at Augusta in April.

Johnson's remarkable showing made the achievements of second-place finishers Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im feel less significant. But both players deserve recognition for their performances.

Smith became the only player in Masters history to record four straight rounds in the 60s, per the PGA Tour:

The Australian now has two top-10 finishes at Augusta, and the 27-year-old could be viewed as a contender to win the green jacket in the spring.

The 22-year-old Im shined in his Augusta debut with three rounds in the 60s that led to a 15-under finish.

Smith and Im cleared the next closest competitor by three strokes. Justin Thomas finished in sole possession of fourth place at 12 under, while Rory McIlroy and Dylan Frittelli landed in a tie for fifth at 11 under.

After a seven-month delay from its initial scheduled date in April, the 2020 Masters Tournament came to a close at Augusta National on Sunday.

Bryson DeChambeau was the clear favorite at 15-2 heading into this year's tournament after his impressive U.S. Open win with a six-under 274. With his notable distance and strength, there was chatter that he could "break Augusta National."

But in the end, it was another quiet, steady Vegas favorite, Dustin Johnson, who prevailed for his first-ever green jacket. Johnson had been right behind DeChambeau in the odds at 17-2, and the world No. 1 was nothing to sneeze at heading into Masters week.

In his previous four Masters, Johnson finished tied for sixth, fourth and second. He was certainly not looking to finish as runner-up once again this year after doing just that (for the second consecutive time) at the PGA Championship this year.

Whether or not you want to ascribe a narrative of blowing majors to Johnson, the fact remains that he's been left standing on the outside looking in multiple times over his PGA Tour career.

This year, however, he may have decisively put that narrative to bed. Showing off his closing prowess, he all but secured his victory Sunday with three straight birdies starting from No. 13.

Johnson didn't falter throughout the four days of the tournament, ending at 268, an astonishing 20 under par. That was two strokes better than the 72-hole Masters scoring record that Tiger Woods (1997) and Jordan Spieth (2015) had set.

He also had the fewest bogeys ever by any Masters champion, with four:

Johnson's scores in the four rounds of the tournament were 65, 70, 65 and 68.

It all culminated in a sizable payday for Johnson. The full prize-money payouts from this year's $11.5 million purse are below.

Dustin Johnson's longtime fiancee, Paulina Gretzky, was on hand to celebrate as Johnson claimed his first-ever Masters title by five strokes, becoming the the only player to finish 20 under in the tournament's history.

Johnson's win is his second major championship, after winning the 2016 U.S. Open. He finished last season's outing at Augusta in a tie for second place, which was his career-best finish at the Masters.

The 31-year-old was also in attendance when Johnson won the Tour Championship over Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffele in September.

The 36-year-old first met Gretzky, a model who is the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, in 2009. The pair began dating in 2013 and got engaged seven months later. They have two sons together—Tatum, who is five, and River, who is three, according to Richard Forrester of The Sun

The wait is over for Dustin Johnson. After four straight top-10 finishes, including a runner-up showing in 2019, the 36-year-old is a Masters champion.

Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im tried their best to build some drama in Sunday's final round, but Johnson pulled away and prevailed by five shots. His overall score (20 under) was the best in the history of the event.

Johnson earned three straight birdies starting from No. 13, which all but guaranteed he'd have to make room in his closet for a green jacket.

Many on social media marveled at Johnson's closing ability:

Augusta National Golf Club's COVID-19 health and safety protocols didn't preclude Johnson from enjoying the traditional donning of the jacket. Tiger Woods was on hand to provide the winner with the newest addition to his wardrobe.

Johnson was overwhelmed when speaking about his win:

Consistency was the key for Johnson over the four rounds. He reached 60 of the 72 greens in regulation, his 83 percent success rate noticeably higher than the rest of the field (66 percent), per the Masters official site. He also averaged 1.62 putts per hole. He had four bogeys for the entirety of the Masters, and two of those came Sunday when he was fully in the driver's seat.

The 36-year-old didn't let his past missteps shake his focus down the stretch, either. Those birdies on the back nine showed how he wasn't to be denied his second major championship.

Even given the unique circumstances for the 2020 tournament, Johnson's victory will be remembered as one of the greatest individual efforts at Augusta.

Any shot Woods had of securing a Masters repeat went out the window with his even-par 72 in the third round. He had too much ground to make up to think a title challenge was in store.

Woods eliminated any doubt when he needed 10 shots to complete the par-three 12th hole. His tee shot rolled into the water, and his next shot from the drop zone met the same fate. Then a chip from the bunker sailed well past the green and found the water, too.

Smith couldn't chase Johnson down but executed one of Sunday's best shots on No. 7. Following a wayward drive, he somehow lifted his approach above the trees to the right of the fairway and got to within 10 feet of the cup.

Smith has to be ruing his misfortune. He was the first golfer ever at the Masters to have four sub-70 rounds, yet it wasn't enough. Fifteen under has often been enough to claim an outright title or force a playoff in past years as well.

The 2020 Masters won't be a tournament Bryson DeChambeau recalls fondly. The U.S. Open champion tied for 34th at two under. He showed off his prodigious power on the par-five 13th hole. His drive traveled 321 yards before pulling out an iron and sending the ball 150 yards to the green to set up an easy eagle putt.

To some extent, Johnson's PGA Tour career has been overshadowed by his failures more so than his achievements, not unlike Greg Norman. On multiple occasions in the past, he was the leader through 54 holes of a major tournament before falling short.

His dominant performance was a long time coming and had to feel good after so many disappointing results on a big stage.
