The 2022 NFL MVP award race is starting to really heat up following an exciting Week 12 slate.

A handful of realistic contenders have established themselves as favorites with two-thirds of the campaign in the books, but there is still plenty of time for a dark horse to ascend the ranks.

With that in mind, let's look at the latest odds for the top-five MVP candidates and evaluate what each has accomplished to earn this lofty status. You can also find some outside contenders who still have a glimmer of hope at making history by earning this honor.

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs (-160)

Patrick Mahomes already has one MVP in his trophy case and currently has the inside track to a second.

The 27-year-old has guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a 9-2 record—the best in the AFC heading into Week 13—while completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 3,585 yards and 29 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

It's arguably Mahomes' most impressive campaign yet, given the challenges the Kansas City offense had to face after trading Tyreek Hill early in the offseason.

If the Chiefs keep winning and Mahomes can continue his current pace for the remainder of the season, his team will earn the top seed in the conference, and he'll finish with a record-setting 5,540 yards in addition to a whopping 45 touchdowns.

Those numbers should lock up the MVP hardware, but he does have some close competition over the final third of the campaign.

Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (+350)

Jalen Hurts made the NFL MVP race much more interesting after a scintillating performance this past weekend. The rising Philadelphia Eagles superstar helped his team move to a league-best 10-1 after dissecting the Green Bay Packers defense during their Sunday Night Football matchup.

Hurts shined under the bright primetime lights even though he only completed 16-of-28 passing attempts for 153 yards. While two of those throws went for scores, the 24-year-old did most of his damage on the ground.

He finished with a career-high 157 rushing yards on 17 totes, sparking Philadelphia's offense to a hard-fought 40-33 victory.

The showing created plenty of buzz around Hurts' MVP chances and saw his odds improve rather significantly after he entered Week 12 at +550.

Should Hurts' squad finish with the league's best record and he has a few more heroic performances up his sleeve, the third-year quarterback could usurp Mahomes as the year's MVP.

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Miami Dolphins (+500)

The Miami Dolphins waffled constantly on whether to commit to Tua Tagovailoa over the first two seasons of his career. The organization finally went all-in on the fifth overall pick in 2020 this offseason, bringing in superstar wideout Tyreek Hill and bolstering a shoddy offensive line to assist the young signal-caller's development.

The moves have paid off as Tagovailoa has emerged as one of the league's top players at his position.

Unfortunately, missed games have hurt his chances of becoming the league's MVP this season.

Tagovailoa endured a scary head injury against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3, briefly exiting the game before reentering. He then had his head slammed into the turf in the first half of the following week, suffering a concussion that caused him to miss the remainder of the contest as well as the next two.

The 24-year-old picked up right where he left off after returning, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 1,529 yards and 11 touchdowns with zero interceptions over the last five games.

While Tagovailoa's emergence as a franchise quarterback has been a great development for Miami, it's likely he'll have to stay healthy and put together another sterling campaign in 2023 to earn his first MVP award.

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills (+1400)

Josh Allen was neck-and-neck with Mahomes as an NFL MVP favorite heading into the start of the 2022 season. While his Buffalo Bills have remained in the league's upper echelon, Allen hasn't done quite enough to sit atop the hierarchy.

The 26-year-old came close to winning an MVP in 2020 when he finished second after a breakout year, but his stats this season more closely resemble his 2021 performance: a strong year but one where he failed to even rate in the top three for voters.

Through 11 games, Allen is on track for a career-high in passing yardage (4,919) with the same number of touchdowns (36) as he had last year. The quarterback is completing a slightly higher percentage of his passes (63.9 percent vs. 63.3 percent), but his turnovers have also gone up, as his 11 interceptions put him on track for a career-high 17 this season.

Allen has continued to terrorize defenses when he's scrambling and has already amassed 561 yards and five scores on 81 carries. Should he remain on this trajectory, the quarterback would easily eclipse his previous career high of 763 rushing yards. Those elite running capabilities could help earn the signal-caller some extra MVP votes.

If the fifth-year veteran catches fire and leads Buffalo to an undefeated finish or close to it while lifting his own game to another level, he could potentially shrink the gap on the odds table. If not, Allen will likely narrowly miss out on an MVP award yet again.

Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals (+1400)

Joe Burrow established himself as an elite quarterback in only his second season, returning from a torn ACL that cut his rookie year short to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl.

While Cincinnati struggled out of the gate this year with a 2-3 record, Burrow has had the offense firing on all cylinders since mid-October. Over the last six games, the 25-year-old has guided his side to five wins and lit up opposing defenses for 1,844 passing yards and 14 touchdowns while adding another three scores on the ground.

It's a noticeable improvement from Burrow's early performances—he threw for 1,316 yards but had only nine touchdowns against five interceptions through Week 5—but the turnaround likely came too late for the third-year star to earn an MVP award.

Best Contender Bet: Josh Allen

The NFL MVP award is generally considered an honor reserved for quarterbacks, especially in the modern era.

Forty-five of the 66 league MVPs have played the quarterback position, including each of the last nine winners and 14 of the past 15.

Despite this, there are a pair of skill-position players with a chance to break the mold in 2022.

Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings (+10000)

A wide receiver has never taken home the NFL MVP award, and it seems it would take a truly special campaign from one for that to change. Cooper Kupp only finished third after winning a rare Triple Crown last year, but Justin Jefferson does have an outside chance at pulling off something no player has ever done before.

The Minnesota Vikings star was on pace to become the first wideout to ever eclipse the 2,000-yard receiving mark before a disappointing 33-yard outing against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11 hurt his chances of making history.

Jefferson rebounded on Sunday with a 139-yard showing, putting him on track for a still-impressive 1,904 yards after 17 games. That almost certainly won't give him an MVP nod, but if the 23-year-old somehow tallies up a ton of yards and snatches a few more scores over the final six games, he could improbably rise to the top of voter's lists.

Nick Chubb, RB, Cleveland Browns (+25000)

While 18 backs have earned MVP honors since the creation of the award, none have done so since Adrian Peterson in 2012. That isn't likely to change a decade later, but Nick Chubb has the best chance of any back to snap the signal-caller streak this season.

The Cleveland Browns star may not be leading the league in rushing yards or touchdowns through 12 weeks, as his 1,039 yards place him behind both Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry, and his 12 scores put him second to Jamaal Williams. However, he has helped keep his franchise in playoff contention despite playing for an offense that has been starting a backup in Jacoby Brissett.

It will take a herculean effort by Chubb down the stretch to earn MVP odds, but he does have the talent to pull off this miraculous feat.

Best Dark-Horse Bet: Justin Jefferson

Patrick Mahomes Leads Peter King's NFL MVP Rankings, Justin Jefferson Enters Top 5

Even with quality performances around the league, Patrick Mahomes remains the favorite to win NFL MVP through Week 12, according to Peter King of NBC Sports.

The Kansas City Chiefs star threw just one touchdown pass in Sunday's blowout win over the Los Angeles Rams, but his team is red-hot with a 9-2 record. Mahomes leads the NFL with 3,585 passing yards and 29 touchdowns through 11 games despite losing No. 1 receiver Tyreek Hill in the offseason.

It helps the quarterback lead King's list of MVP contenders:

  1. Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs
  2. Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles
  3. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Miami Dolphins
  4. Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills
  5. Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Jalen Hurts will have a strong argument leading the 10-1 Philadelphia Eagles, showcasing impressive dual-threat numbers and efficiency. He has 17 passing touchdowns and three interceptions to go with 597 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. The third-year player has been nearly unstoppable and should get plenty of consideration for MVP.

The inclusion of Justin Jefferson is also notable as no receiver has ever won the MVP award. Jefferson might have a chance thanks to his big-game ability for the Minnesota Vikings (9-2). He had nine catches for 139 yards and a touchdown against the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving Day.

Eagles' Troubling Trend Gets Exposed by Texans, and NFC Contenders Must Take Note

Nov 4, 2022
Texans RB Dameon Pierce put on a show against the undefeated Eagles on Thursday night.
Texans RB Dameon Pierce put on a show against the undefeated Eagles on Thursday night.

The Philadelphia Eagles outlasted the one-win Houston Texans on Thursday night, and they remain the only undefeated team in the NFL. However, even the lowly Texans were able to take advantage of perhaps Philadelphia's only glaring weakness.

The Eagles continue to struggle against the run.

To be fair, Texans rookie Dameon Pierce is shaping up to be a special back, and it didn't help matters that Eagles rookie defensive tackle Jordan Davis was on injured reserve with an ankle injury. This made for a mismatch that favored Houston, and the Texans repeatedly exploited Philadelphia's soft underbelly.

They ran it 32 times for 168 yards with Pierce averaging 5.1 yards per carry. Houston held the ball for 31:47 of game clock.

While the Eagles pulled away late, Thursday's 29-17 win wasn't as decisive as many expected.

Struggles against the run, though, aren't new for the Eagles.

Coming into Thursday night, Philadelphia ranked 29th in yards per carry surrendered (5.1). It hasn't been a major issue too often because the Eagles' fourth-ranked offense and playmaking pass defense have been good enough to keep games from regularly being close.

Philadelphia came into Thursday's game ranked fourth in pass defense and second in yards per pass (5.4) allowed.

The offense—led by Jalen Hurts and skill-position players Miles Sanders, Dallas Goedert, DeVonta Smith and A.J. Brown—has frequently allowed the Eagles to play with a lead. Defensive stalwarts like C.J. Gardner-Johnson, James Bradberry, Darius Slay, Haason Reddick and Brandon Graham have made passing on the Philadelphia defense difficult.

And with opponents regularly trailing, they've often abandoned the run.

Coming into Week 9, opponents attempted 269 passes (fourth-most) against Philadelphia and only 156 runs (third-fewest). The result was that despite allowing 5.1 yards per carry, the Eagles ranked a respectable 15th in rushing yards allowed. They had allowed just 45 first downs on the ground, tied for eighth-fewest in the NFL.

The Texans, however, stuck with the run (32 runs, 25 non-runs), and the game was tied well into the third quarter until a Gardner-Johnson interception shifted the momentum, and Hurts quickly responded with a touchdown pass.

We'll get into the turnover factor shortly, but for now, let's dive into the Houston game a little deeper.

As previously stated, Davis' presence was sorely missed. Houston found some success attacking the perimeter but even more success running into the teeth of the Eagles defense.

No matter where Houston ran the ball, though, poor angles and bad tackling were problems for Philadelphia.

We'll reiterate that Pierce is a special player and perhaps a front-runner for Offensive Rookie of the Year, but he shouldn't get past multiple defenders when they're touching his jersey.

Again, this is not a new problem for Philadelphia. The Eagles had 41 missed tackles coming into Week 9. That was the 12th-most in the NFL, even though 14 teams with fewer missed tackles had played one more game.

Poor run defense isn't a problem of which the Eagles are unaware. Defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon addressed the run defense before the Week 6 game against the rival Dallas Cowboys.

"I think we can always clean up," Gannon said, per Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia. "We probably got a little leaky at times Sunday, which you would like to think that three-yard run that's going for six, you would like to get it down for three, but that's always a work in progress."

The run defense hasn't progressed since then, even before the Davis injury. The Cowboys rushed for 134 yards against the Eagles. The Arizona Cardinals rushed for 124 the week before, and the Pittsburgh Steelers rushed for 144 last week.

The big difference in most games has been the turnovers. The Detroit Lions and the Cardinals were the only two teams to rush for 120 yards or more and commit one or fewer turnovers against Philadelphia Eagles this season. Both teams lost by a field goal.

Had the Texans not turned the ball over, they might have pulled off the upset of the year. They turned it over twice and lost by 12.

While it's entirely unfair to say that Houston has provided a blueprint for beating the Eagles, Thursday was another example of how teams can beat the league's last unbeaten.

If a team can keep the score close enough to stick with the run, actually do that, and take care of the football, it can knock off Philadelphia. Looking ahead at the remaining schedule, a couple of teams could do exactly that.

Dallas (Week 16) will have quarterback Dak Prescott for the rematch. The Cowboys relied on backup Cooper Rush in the first meeting, and he tossed a trio of interceptions. The Eagles still have two games against the New York Giants (Week 14 and 18), and they could be a problem too.

New York has a star running back in Saquon Barkley, it ranks fourth in rushing yards and has played three games (all wins) without committing a turnover.

In Week 13, the Eagles will face the Tennessee Titans and running back Derrick Henry, who rumbled for 219 yards last week against Houston.

And potential playoff opponents like the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks could give Philadelphia trouble too. The 49ers recently acquired star back Christian McCaffrey, who should jump-start their 16th-ranked rushing attack.

The Seahawks have their own budding rookie star in Ken Walker III and are averaging 5.3 yards per carry as a team.

With all due respect to the Texans, the Cowboys, Giants, Titans, 49ers and Seahawks are all better teams who may be able to close out the Eagles where Houston could not.

Now, this doesn't diminish what the Eagles have accomplished this season. Head coach Nick Sirianni has his offense clicking, the pass defense is elite, and Philadelphia is 8-0 for the first time in franchise history.

This team has few glaring weaknesses, but as Gannon noted a few weeks ago, the run defense remains a work in progress. If Philadelphia can't find progress in that department, it could be a fatal flaw that keeps the Eagles from reaching Super Bowl LVII.

Jalen Hurts Applauded for 'Incredible' Poise as Eagles Beat Texans to Improve to 8-0

The undefeated dream is still alive.

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles improved to 8-0 on the season with a 29-17 victory over the Houston Texans in Thursday's contest. Road games don't get much easier on paper than a contest against the one-win Texans without wide receivers Brandin Cooks and Nico Collins, and Philadelphia shook off a slow start thanks in large part to its MVP candidate under center.

Hurts finished 21-of-27 for 243 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. He spread the ball around early during an 18-play, 91-yard scoring drive and then honed in on tight end Dallas Goedert (eight catches for 100 yards) and wide receiver A.J. Brown for critical second-half touchdowns.

Social media had plenty of love for the signal-caller:

https://twitter.com/SSN_Eagles/status/1588355758487666690
https://twitter.com/HandsTeamTy/status/1588358697792569344

All's well that ends well for the Eagles, but it wasn't always pretty.

The Texans marched right down the field for a touchdown on the opening drive, answered two scores with another touchdown to tie the game late in the first half, bullied a Philadelphia defensive line that was missing Jordan Davis (ankle) to open up consistent holes for Dameon Pierce and made it a four-quarter game.

Some of that was due to Eagles' mistakes, as Hurts lost a fumble on a strip-sack, Jake Elliott missed a field goal at the end of the half and the offensive line struggled to block Jerry Hughes as he got to the quarterback multiple times.

However, the game flipped with C.J. Gardner-Johnson's interception, as Hurts found Brown for a go-ahead touchdown a mere two plays later.

Hurts was in full control by the ensuing drive, leading the visitors 75 yards on 10 plays to create some much-needed breathing room. He established a rhythm with Goedert, scrambled to avoid pressure and then hit the tight end for a score before sneaking it in himself on the two-point conversion.

There weren't many style points for the undefeated contenders, but they got the win they needed ahead of a divisional clash with the Washington Commanders in Week 10.

Jalen Hurts, Jaylen Waddle Headline Madden 23 Ratings Update After Week 8

Jalen Hurts continues his ascension in the Madden 23 ratings.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback saw his rating move up another two points, bringing him up to an 82 overall.

Even with the climb Hurts has made this season on Madden, an 82 feels a bit low for the quarterback of the NFL's last remaining undefeated team. The 24-year-old has thrown for 1,799 yards, 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions, completing 67 percent of his passes across seven games.

Four of those touchdowns came last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, as he connected with A.J. Brown for three scores.

But he's also a major threat as a runner, rushing for 303 yards and six scores. And the Eagles have responded by opening the year 7-0.

He was one of a number of players to see their ratings adjusted this week:

Jaylen Waddle has been awesome for the Miami Dolphins this season and continued to thrive last week, nabbing eight passes for 106 yards and two scores. So his rating, unsurprisingly, got a nudge in the right direction:

Waddle burst onto the scene as a rookie, catching 104 passes for 1,015 yards and six touchdowns last season. He's already up to 42 receptions for 747 yards and five scores this year. No sophomore slump appears to be incoming for Mr. Waddle.

Minnesota Vikings edge-rusher Za'Darius Smith is having a strong season, posting an NFL-leading 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. Following last week's three-sack outburst, he saw his rating get bumped in Madden:

The ageless Devin McCourty is getting some Madden love too after his two-interception performance last week:

Just another strong year for the two-time Pro Bowler and three-time champion.
