Super Bowl Opening Night 2022: Best Moments and Twitter Reaction from Media Day

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, gone are the Super Bowl media days where players would all gather together under one roof to answer questions from hundreds of media members.

Those often produced amusing moments from marriage proposals to late-night television shows getting in on the fun. Football frequently took a backseat, which was somewhat appropriate since the Super Bowl is a spectacle that captures the attention of the country and goes well beyond the X's and O's of breaking down a game.

Alas, the ongoing pandemic meant something like that couldn't realistically happen this year before Sunday's clash between the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams.

Instead, players from both teams answered questions virtually from their respective home cities. Here is a look at some of the most notable quotes.

Bengals

Much of the discussion surrounding the Bengals was about quarterback Joe Burrow, which should come as no surprise.

After all, he is already the franchise savior in his second season after being the No. 1 overall pick and is one win away from leading Cincinnati to its first Lombardi Trophy. He even outdueled Patrick Mahomes in the AFC Championship Game to get this far and has turned heads with his swag off the field.

That swag and his confidence came up Monday:

Burrow isn't even the only notable LSU product on the Bengals with his own sense of style, as No. 1 wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is well-known for the "Griddy" dance he unleashes when he scores a touchdown:

The connection between Burrow and Chase that has led to so many of those touchdown dances has fueled Cincinnati's offense, which made it all the more notable when the wide receiver didn't list his quarterback among the five best-dressed players on the team.

"Might have to talk to him about that one," Burrow said with a smirk.

The quarterback also revealed he listens to Kid Cudi and had some advice for young players:

In terms of on the field, there may not be a bigger question mark for Cincinnati than tight end C.J. Uzomah's health after he suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee during the AFC Championship Game win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

"I'm not missing the biggest game of my life," Uzomah said while providing some welcome news for Bengals fans. "I'm not missing it. That's my approach going every day into rehab."

That means he could be ready to suit up in the offense alongside Chase and running back Joe Mixon, who said they attempt to model themselves after Dez Bryant and Marshawn Lynch, respectively:

While the players generated many of the headlines Monday, the coaching matchup is a key storyline as well considering Zac Taylor was on Sean McVay's staff in Los Angeles prior to coming to Cincinnati.

Taylor doesn't believe there will be any additional motivation from his past working with McVay.

"There's so many people in this league at this point, 10 years in, that are always on the sidelines across from you, and that's just part of the game," he said. "There's no added 'Oh, I want to beat this guy,' no. It's the Bengals playing the Rams for the Super Bowl. Our team wants to beat their team. It really has nothing to do with the relationships on the other side of the ball or across the other sideline."

Rams

These playoffs have felt like something of a coronation for Burrow, and the Rams have certainly noticed the second-year quarterback taking the league by storm.

The Cincinnati signal-caller was a big topic of discussion for the NFC representative as well, and there was no bulletin-board material provided because it was nothing but praise:

Los Angeles has plenty of star power of its own, and one of those stars will be tasked with stopping the Burrow-to-Chase connection. Jalen Ramsey said "I believe I'm the best defensive back in the NFL" and is looking forward to the opportunity to go against the game-changing wide receiver:

While the focus is on stopping Burrow and Co., some members of the Rams defense also took the time to reflect on defeating Tom Brady in the playoffs in what turned out to be the final game for the all-time great:

Having Aaron Donald, Von Miller and Ramsey on one side of the ball should at least help Los Angeles prevent Burrow from completely taking over this game.

But the offense is still going to have to put up some points, which will probably start with Cooper Kupp. All Kupp did was lead the NFL across the board with 145 catches for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns while helping lead his team to the Super Bowl.

He will be playing this time instead of watching it with nachos:

Kupp isn't the only impact wide receiver on the roster after the Rams added Odell Beckham Jr. following his exit from the Cleveland Browns. He wasted little time proving himself on his new team but said it isn't all about proving his past doubters wrong.

"No," he said when asked if he took satisfaction in proving others wrong. "A younger me would have. ... I don't take satisfaction, it's not that deep for me because I know who I am."

Beckham was also surprised by a former teammate:

Matthew Stafford will be the one throwing the ball to Kupp and Beckham, and he opened up about coming to Los Angeles from the Detroit Lions and teaming up with McVay:

McVay has something Stafford doesn't in Super Bowl experience, and the head coach reflected on his past loss to the New England Patriots.

"You look at yourself in the mirror, you take accountability and then you keep it moving," he said. "... I'll never run away from the fact that I didn't do a good enough job for our team."

That was also a missed chance for a ring for Donald, but he is looking to change that Sunday:

All that stands in the way of a complete resume is one victory.

Odell Beckham Was 'Very Close' to Signing Saints, Patriots Contracts Before Rams Deal

Odell Beckham Jr. considered returning to his home state before he decided to join the Los Angeles Rams this season.

Beckham, a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, told reporters Monday he was "very close" to signing with the New Orleans Saints following his departure from the Cleveland Browns.

"It just didn’t feel like the right time," he said. "Right place. Wrong time."

Beckham expressed a similar sentiment about the New England Patriots, confirming he spoke with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick:

The three-time Pro Bowler cleared waivers on Nov. 9 and ESPN's Dianna Russini reported one day later the Saints were emerging as one of three finalists to sign him.

Between growing up in the state and later playing for LSU, the opportunity to call New Orleans his professional home was probably tantalizing.

Competitively, though, the Saints didn't have a whole lot going for them at the time, at least for a player who presumably wanted to sign for a contender. Jameis Winston had been lost for the season to a torn ACL, so a 5-3 record was undercut by Trevor Siemian serving as the starting quarterback.

New Orleans wound up winning four of its final five games, but that wasn't enough to clinch a playoff berth.

The absence of Michael Thomas meant Beckham might have occupied a larger role in the Saints offense than he had with the Rams. In eight games with Los Angeles, he had 27 receptions for 305 yards and five touchdowns. His 38.1 receiving yards per game were more than half of his career average (76.7).

But Beckham didn't select the Rams because they could promise him the most touches. Instead, Los Angeles has provided him the collective success he couldn't attain with the Browns and New York Giants.

If the 29-year-old had to do his free agency all over again, it's difficult to see why he'd do anything differently.

Rams' Odell Beckham Jr.: 'I Don't Take Satisfaction' from Proving Critics Wrong

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is set to play in the Super Bowl for the first time in his career after joining the franchise earlier this season, and he told reporters Monday that he hasn't gotten any satisfaction out of proving people wrong following his release from the Cleveland Browns.

"No," Beckham said. "A younger me would have. ... I don't take satisfaction, it's not that deep for me because I know who I am."

Beckham had been doubted for much of his time in Cleveland. After recording more than 1,000 receiving yards during his first season with the Browns in 2019, the 29-year-old played just seven games in 2020 before suffering a torn ACL. He caught just 23 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns before being sidelined.

The former 12th overall pick entered the 2021 season with higher expectations, but he failed to reach them through the first half of the season in Cleveland. He caught just 17 passes for 232 yards and no touchdowns in six games.

Beckham's lack of production caught the ire of his father, who posted a video to Instagram highlighting times when Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield missed his son completely or didn't throw the ball to him when he was open.

ESPN's Jake Trotter reported that Beckham never apologized to Mayfield for his father's post, and the Browns released the wide receiver not too long after the incident.

Since joining the Rams on a one-year deal, Beckham has been on a tear, and he wasn't initially expected to have a significant impact. L.A. has plenty of depth at wide receiver with Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, Van Jefferson and Tutu Atwell. However, Woods tore his ACL at practice just days before Beckham was set to make his Rams debut, which opened up more of an opportunity for him.

The three-time Pro Bowler caught 27 passes for 305 yards and five touchdowns in eight regular season games, and he has been even better in the postseason. Through three playoff games, Beckham has 19 catches for 236 yards and a touchdown.

Beckham told reporters after he signed with the Rams that it "felt right in my heart and soul," and now he's the closest he's ever been to winning a Super Bowl, which is remarkable.

Suspect Arrested in Alleged Assault of Daniel Luna at NFC Championship Game

The Inglewood Police Department announced Friday an arrest was made in connection with an altercation outside SoFi Stadium following Sunday's NFC Championship Game that left Daniel Luna, a San Francisco 49ers fan, in a medically induced coma.

Inglewood Police Lt. Nicole Loudermilk confirmed the news to Stefanie Dazio of the Associated Press, but no further details about the suspect or the charges they face were immediately released.

The update comes after Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. said Thursday a review of video showed Luna standing in a group of mostly 49ers fans when he pushed a man wearing a Los Angeles Rams jersey, who returned the shove when Luna began to walk away. When Luna turned around, the individual punched Luna in the face and he struck the back of his head when he fell to the ground, per Dazio.

Butts said there "there didn't seem to be any hostilities" between the rival fanbases before the altercation, which he said lasted less than five seconds.

"It looked like a small altercation that went very bad," he said. "From one punch and someone falling, hitting their head on the ground. It wasn't like you had people ganging up on somebody and beating them."

Butts noted Luna was placed in the medically induced coma in order to prevent swelling on his brain amid internal bleeding.

A source within the Inglewood Police Department told the Los Angeles Times the other man involved in the altercation has claimed self-defense.

The situation has drawn added attention because SoFi Stadium is scheduled to host Super Bowl LVI between the Rams and Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13.

Butts described it was an isolated incident and said there were no plans to further heighten security for the Super Bowl, per Dazio.

"I'm very comfortable there was sufficient security," he said. "There is plenty of security in the parking lot. You're not going to stop every altercation, argument between fans. It's just not going to happen."

No update on Luna's medical status has been provided.

The sports gambler known as Mattress Mack has made the largest mobile bet in United States history picking the Cincinnati Bengals to win the Super Bowl, according to Darren Rovell of the Action Network.

Jim McIngvale placed $4.5 million in moneyline bets on the Bengals to beat the Los Angeles Rams next week:

Mattress Mack is no stranger to big wagers, notably winning $2.75 million when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won last year's Super Bowl over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Of course, there have also been some notable losses, including a $2.4 million bet at the Kentucky Derby.

He also bets on the hometown Houston Astros to win the World Series nearly every season.

McIngvale will hope for more luck this time around, while his customers will hope for the same. Anyone who spends $3,000 at his store will get a refund if the Bengals pull out the victory.

The Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals both revealed their Super Bowl LVI jersey combinations Tuesday.

As noted by Cameron DaSilva of Rams Wire, Los Angeles will be wearing its modern throwback, which debuted this year. The jerseys hark back to the team's first stint in Los Angeles and the beginning of its tenure in St. Louis.

Now old and new clash in the Super Bowl, and the Rams played that up with this animation of quarterback Matthew Stafford throwing a touchdown pass to former franchise great and Pro Football Hall of Famer Isaac Bruce:

The Rams won't have to travel to play this Super Bowl, which will take place at its home field of SoFi Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. ET.

However, the Bengals are the designated "home team" in this game. Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, the Super Bowl home team alternates between conferences each year.

The 2021 season marks the AFC's turn, and that also means the Bengals got their choice of jerseys over the Rams.

Cincinnati went with the black top and white pants, like when the franchise made its first Super Bowl to cap the 1981 season.

If the Los Angeles Rams can beat the Cincinnati Bengals on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium, they will win the Super Bowl. And it would mark the franchise's first championship since the 1999 season, when it was based in St...

Rams' Tyler Higbee Diagnosed with Sprained MCL Injury; Status for 2022 Super Bowl TBD

Los Angeles Rams tight end Tyler Higbee suffered a sprained MCL in a 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, and his status for the Super Bowl is to be determined, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Higbee exited the NFC Championship Game with the knee ailment in the first quarter and did not return.

Higbee has been one of the most durable tight ends in the NFL since the Rams selected him in the fourth round of the 2016 draft, appearing in at least 15 games in each of his six seasons.

While the 29-year-old was rather unimpressive during his first three seasons, he has been a significant part of head coach Sean McVay's offense from 2019 to 2021. During the 2021 regular season, he caught 61 passes for 560 yards and five touchdowns. He has added nine catches for 115 yards in L.A.'s three postseason games thus far.

The Rams are thin at tight end, and if Higbee is unavailable for the Super Bowl, it'll be a significant loss. Backup tight end Kendall Blanton appeared in just 11 games this season, catching four passes for 37 yards. However, he caught five passes for 57 yards on five targets while filling in for Higbee in the NFC Championship Game.

L.A. could also turn to 2020 fourth-round pick Brycen Hopkins, who caught just one pass for nine yards in five games this season.

Instead of turning to Blanton or Hopkins, quarterback Matthew Stafford could look to get more production out of receivers Van Jefferson, Tutu Atwell and Ben Skowronek, aside from Cooper Kupp and Odell Beckham Jr.
