The New Baddest Man on the Planet? Max Holloway Thinks He's Earned the Title

Think you've got an impressive MMA resume?

Go ahead and compare it to Max Holloway's.

The long and lean Hawaiian has been in the UFC for nearly a decade, has won three fights for every loss and has a championship-level pedigree that includes five title-fight victories—in addition to a non-title win by first-round finish over one of the promotion's reigning belt-holders.

So, among guys claiming to be the Octagon's apex predator, it's hard to argue with his credentials.

And somehow, at least for three more weeks, he's still just 29 years old.

His last outing as a 20-something comes Saturday night in Las Vegas, where he'll headline a Fight Night show with Yair Rodriguez in a meeting of the world's first- and third-ranked 145-pound contenders.

It's his first non-pay-per-view appearance in six years, but he told Bleacher Report he's not at all fazed by the lesser stage.

ABU DHABI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - JULY 12: (L-R) Max Holloway punches Alexander Volkanovski of Australia in their UFC featherweight championship fight during the UFC 251 event at Flash Forum on UFC Fight Island on July 12, 2020 on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, U

"It's a big fight every time I get to be on a card, and I'm just grateful to be making that walk and being able to show why I'm one of the baddest men on the planet," said Holloway, who was king of the featherweights from 2017 to 2019 before dropping the belt to Alexander Volkanovski.

"I had five title-fight wins. And I loved every single title fight I ever was actually in.

"This is just another one. Last time I checked I'm still fighting five fives. There's not that belt at the end, but this is like a championship fight."

Speaking of that belt, he and Volkanovski did get together for a rematch at UFC 251 in July, and the Aussie walked away with a split decision, though more than a few of Holloway's colleagues thought he'd done enough to regain his title.

Still, if you're thinking Holloway lays awake at night lamenting curious scorecards, think again.

In fact, there's no guarantee that Volkanosvki will be next on his competitive dance card even if things go as planned with Rodriguez. Among the alternatives, he suggested, were a second date with lightweight champ Charles Oliveira—whom he stopped in 99 seconds in 2015—as well as a follow-up with 2013 foe Conor McGregor or even a dip in the crossover pool to fight a non-MMA rival.

"Like I said, I've got five title-fight wins. The sixth title fight win would be great against Alex," Holloway said. "For sure, that's what I want. But at the end of the day, we'll see what happens. UFC discussed a lot of possibilities, actually. I have a win over the 155-pound champ. I'm always on a short list to fight Conor. They got me on that short list.

"Even with these, quote unquote, so-called boxers. I'm the best boxer in the UFC. Use your imagination, my friends. That's all I can say. We live in a wild time. We've seen wild fights being made. Just use your imagination."

He was coy when pressed for specifics, but Holloway has been labeled one of the UFC's biggest weight-cutters and is rumored to walk around at or near 180 pounds before trimming down.

Boxing's reigning pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez, is frequently linked to these sorts of fights and competed last week at 168 pounds. For tale-of-the-tape purposes, Holloway is 16 months younger and three inches taller than Alvarez, who's never weighed-in past 174.5 pounds.

As for social media chatterbox Jake Paul, he's five years younger than Holloway, two inches taller at 6'1" and walks around between fights in the neighborhood of 190 to 200 pounds. Paul is fighting boxer Tommy Fury in December but has previously met ex-UFC fighters Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley.

Holloway, without naming names, said he'd listen if someone called with an out-of-the-box proposal.

"We'll see what happens," he said. "Like I said, use your imagination. We live in wild times. Wild fights are being made. What a time to be alive if you're a fighting fan or if you do this for a living.

"You've got a lot of ways to go."

As for now, it's Rodriguez, a 29-year-old who's been in the UFC since 2014 and lost just one of 10 fights while beating the likes of BJ Penn (TKO 2), Dan Hooker (UD 3) and Alex Caceres (SD 3).

Holloway made the contracted weight of 146 pounds on Friday after another challenging cut and credited his wife and son for not only keeping him healthy but also providing the extra impetus—alongside his wanting to be the best fighter in the world—to get through the most harrowing hours.

"I've got to thank my beautiful wife for helping me through this camp. She cooks all my meals, and she makes sure I'm fed and eating all the right stuff and staying away from all the bad stuff," he said.

"What I've put my son and my wife through, through all the fight weeks and the fights and all the business stuff that I've had to do, all the time that I get taken away from them. That's what gives me the motivation. These two people, my family, they give me the motivation to just be greater, be better and be the best version of myself. That's what gets me through the day."

Even after nine performance bonuses, a record-setting win streak at 145 and a 30-month title reign.

And he's still not close to finished, but he promised he'll know when it's time.

"There's a bunch of records out there that, for sure, I want to break," he said.

"I don't want to be one of these guys where it's past my time and I'm trying to hold onto something. At the end of the day, we just take one step at a time. That's all we're doing. We're just focusing on the now. When we've got to cross that bridge, I'll sit down with my team and say, 'Look, this is what we've got to do, and this is the way we've got to go,' and we'll cross that bridge.

"But, right now, we just focus on the things I can control and the things I can do and set myself up for what's coming ahead in all the fights."

Rodriguez weighed-in a half-pound less at 145.5 and presents a varied threat that's allowed him to rack up multiple wins by decisions, knockouts and submissions since turning pro in 2011.

Still, he's not fought since a pre-pandemic decision over Jeremy Stephens in 2019 and hasn't finished an opponent since stopping "Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung with a second left in their 2018 main event.

"I'm not too worried about what he's gonna do," Holloway said. "I respect everything that he's gonna do. I know what he brings to the table. He knows what I bring to the table. So, at the end of the day, let's get it on. Saturday night should be fun, should be fireworks.

"If you're trying to get a family member, a friend or a colleague into mixed martial arts, into the UFC, make sure to tune in. I can make a fan out of them. I'm gonna go out there and fight my heart out. It's just gonna be a great one."

Conor McGregor Slams Jorge Masvidal for Withdrawing from UFC 269: 'F--k Your Injury'

Conor McGregor criticized Jorge Masvidal on Twitter for dropping out of his welterweight fight with Leon Edwards due to an injury.

It’s also Jorge masvadal (sic) birthday but he a b---h for bottling the fight against Leon. F--k your 'injury' You sign to fight, you fight. Strip that belt from him that he never even won. H-e in a housecoat. The f--k was that about as well? Last seasons Versace house coat hahaha wtf!

That tweet only continues the war of words between the two fighters over the years. The two clearly do not like each other but have yet to fight in the Octagon.

UFC Chief Business Officer Hunter Campbell previously told ESPN's Brett Okamoto that Masvidal, who was scheduled to fight Edwards in a welterweight bout at UFC 269 on Sat., Dec. 11, was out with an undisclosed injury.

As of now, it's unclear whether Edwards will fight on the card against a replacement or be removed from the event entirely. A timeframe for Masvidal's return is unknown.

Conor McGregor Tweets He's Willing to Fight UFC's Michael Chandler 'At Some Stage'

Michael Chandler lost his UFC 268 matchup with Justin Gaethje in a three-round instant classic, but he may have bagged another high-profile opponent in the process.

Conor McGregor said on Twitter he would be willing to fight Chandler in the future after Chandler posted a doctored photo of the two having a staredown:

https://twitter.com/MikeChandlerMMA/status/1457715279744602112

Despite McGregor being just 1-3 in his last four fights, he remains one of the biggest draws in the sport. He hasn't fought since breaking his leg at UFC 264 in a loss (stoppage) against Dustin Poirier, which completed the trilogy between the two fighters. Poirier won two fights in a row against McGregor.

As for Chandler, he's now gone 1-2 in the UFC after a lengthy career with Bellator, beating Dan Hooker before losses to Charles Oliveira and Gaethje. His fight against Oliveira was for the vacant UFC Lightweight championship, and he nearly finished him in the first round before being TKO'd in the second.

Italian DJ Allegedly Injured by Conor McGregor Says UFC Star Is 'F--king Dangerous'

Francesco Facchinetti, the Italian DJ who was allegedly attacked by Conor McGregor earlier this month, has filed a criminal complaint with Italian police.

According to ESPN's Marc Raimondi, Facchinetti said he filed the complaint "several days after" the alleged attack at a party in Rome on Oct. 16.

"It's something about ethics and Conor is f--king dangerous," Facchinetti told Raimondi. "This is a problem."

Facchinetti told Raimondi he was having dinner with his wife, Wilma Helena Faissol, and another couple, actress Bella Thorne and her husband Benjamin Mascolo, before they were invited to a party at the St. Regis Hotel by Thorne. At the party, he said he "hit it off" with McGregor and his friends. However, when Thorne and Mascolo decided to leave, Facchinetti said McGregor got angry and then "punched him in the face with his right hand."

Per Raimondi, Facchinetti said McGregor's bodyguards pulled him away and "asked Facchinetti and his wife to leave the party." When they returned to their hotel, Facchinetti said he contacted police and received medical treatment for a neck injury.

"I took a punch for nothing," Facchinetti told TMZ Sports earlier in October. "That punch could go to anyone. My friends, my wife, or other friends. That’s why I decided to sue Conor McGregor because he is a violent and dangerous person."

Per Raimondi, Facchinetti says he's moving forward with the criminal claim not to put McGregor in jail, but rather to try "to raise awareness about McGregor's recent behavior."

UFC president Dana White declined to comment when asked about the situation during a press conference last week:

The St. Regis hotel in Rome, where the alleged attack occurred, told TMZ it will offer "full support" to law enforcement's investigation.

Facchinetti's attorney, Matteo Sergio Calori, told Raimondi that criminal investigations are not made public under Italian law but confirmed that the complaint was made. CNN's Jack Guy and Nicola Ruotolo reported on Oct. 20 that Italian police confirmed Facchinetti and his lawyer had formally pressed charges.

No one from McGregor's camp has responded to the accusations at this point.

TGIFighting: The 5 Scariest Fighters in MMA Right Now, Conor McGregor and More

Welcome back to TGIFighting, where we talk to top fighters, preview the weekend's combat sports action and make crotchety observations about the combat sports news of the day. Ready? Let's proceed.

*Door creaks open*

Good eeeeeevening.

Welcome to this thrilling and spine-chilling pre-Halloween edition of TGIFighting. Facing our fourth lackluster UFC card in as many weeks, now may be the perfect time to celebrate the scariest season on Earth. Here, that means ranking the scariest fighters in mixed martial arts.

To be in the running for this award, you have to stick out as a particularly frightening member of the cage-fighting community. That's not easy. It's a little like picking out the bubbliest elf in Santa's workshop, only the polar opposite.

But we're up to the task, and our list is sure to chill you down to your very bone marrow. We took into account a combination of fighting style and overall intimidation factor (success level doesn't hurt, either). Here's one question we tried to answer: If this person were walking down the beach and no one knew they were a fighter, how would people react?

OK, that's it. Let's get into the fighters now, listed in no particular order.

GLENDALE, AZ - JUNE 12: Deiveson Figueiredo (red gloves) and Brandon Moreno (blue gloves) during UFC 263 on June 12, 2021, at Gila River Arena in Glendale, AZ. (Photo by Louis Grasse/PxImages/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Deiveson Figueiredo (20-2-1)

With that signature scowl and ultra-violent style, Figgy (and you have to be pretty tough to pull off that nickname) is at the very least the scariest fighter in the flyweight division.

He doesn't have the highest output in the cage, but when he strikes, he does it with extreme prejudice. Remember when he choked Joseph Benavidez (28-8) unconscious to win the 125-pound title? Or the time in 2017 when he survived an early onslaught from Marco Beltran (12-7), only to force the referee to call a corner stoppage after the second?

With 17 stoppages in 20 wins, it's clear where Figueiredo's head is. And it's clear no one who fights him will come out unscathed.

Amanda Nunes (21-4)

This one isn't difficult to explain or understand. Nunes is both the best and scariest female fighter in MMA history.

The previous holder of both titles was Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino (24-2, 1 NC). That is until Nunes blitzed her for a 51-second knockout in 2018. Now, The Lioness rules both the UFC bantamweight and featherweight divisions, bringing an evil grin that tells you she's enjoying her job far too much.

Tony Ferguson (25-6)

Ferguson might be the most intense competitor in all the UFC. His wild workouts are the stuff of legend, as is the toughness that saw him take a near-horrifying beating last year from Justin Gaethje (22-3). According to official UFC stats, Ferguson took an even 100 significant strikes to the head from the notoriously hard-hitting Gaethje. Frankenstein's monster would have gone down before Ferguson that night. It was truly disturbing. Gutting out that Charles Oliveira (31-8, 1 NC) armbar in December before losing by decision was another one for the books.

https://twitter.com/TonyFergusonXT/status/1239714088843800578

Ferguson has dropped three straight, but he's still a fan favorite thanks to the fact that you never know what he's capable of in the cage. He's a loose cannon straight out of central casting.

Francis Ngannou (16-3)

Another one that essentially goes without saying. Ngannou is huge, he purportedly hits with as much horsepower as a compact car, and he knows precisely what to do with that power—namely, take your head off.

His right hook is probably the single most devastating weapon in the sport today.

The record speaks for itself. His last five tilts all ended in knockout, with only one—then-champ Stipe Miocic (20-4)—making it out of the first round, and that one didn't even last a minute into the second.

If Ciryl Gane (10-0) is going to beat Ngannou in January at UFC 270, he won't do it with a firefight. Any game plan to dethrone the champ will include more than its share of tiptoeing.

Thiago Santos (22-9)

Raise your hand if you think you can pull off a tattoo of a medieval war hammer going down your chest. If you raised your hand and you're not Santos, you may very well be telling us and yourself a falsehood.

Santos has the physique and the disposition—embodied by a berserker style that has netted him 15 knockouts in 22 pro victories—to make it work. His ultra-aggressive approach doesn't leave a lot of room for error, but that's what fans like about him. He's not a perfect fighter, but he's bloodthirsty enough to make up for it with pure entertainment value. If light heavyweight had its own BMF belt, the wearer would likely be Santos.

Honorable mentions: Josh Emmett (16-2), Zabit Magomedsharipov (18-1), Marvin Vettori (17-5-1), Rose Namajunas (10-4), Cat Zingano (12-4), Yoel Romero (13-6)

As the Irishman Turns

The MMA world's stars can't seem to stay on the good side of the law.

First came Jon Jones (26-1, 1 NC) earlier this month. Now it's Conor McGregor's (22-6) turn.

According to a Wednesday report from Jack Guy and Nicola Ruotolo of CNN, an Italian DJ is pressing charges against McGregor after he allegedly suffered multiple injuries from an unprovoked attack in a Rome hotel.

Why did the DJ, Francesco Facchinetti, choose to move forward with charges? "Because the world needs to know the fact that he is dangerous," Facchinetti said.

We'll see how the legal process shakes out, but this isn't McGregor's first brush with legal trouble. You hope that at some point someone gets through to these guys. We'll see, said the Zen master.

What Is Paulo Costa Doing?

To paraphrase Office Space, Paulo Costa got tired of cutting weight. So he's not going to do it anymore.

Costa (13-1) is an exciting middleweight. Wait, strike that sentence. You can't really say that right now given Costa's announcement that he was approximately 25 pounds over the 186-pound middleweight limit. (It's technically 185, but you get one pound of leeway in non-title fights.)

The UFC has announced a 195-pound scrap with Marvin Vettori (17-5-1) in the name of salvaging Saturday's UFC Fight Night 196 main event. In the meantime, Costa may want to revisit his pre-fight routine. Remember, this is the same guy who said he fought Israel Adesanya (21-1) hungover after drinking "too much wine" the night before. What in the name of Diego Sanchez is going on here? Also, when did making weight become optional? I guess if you're in a big enough card slot, you can get away with all sorts of stuff.

Stone-Cold Lead Pipe Lock of the Week

Record to date: 21-6

Livia Renata Souza (14-3) is a -130 favorite over Randa Markos (10-11-1). Souza has lost two of three, which might explain why she's buried on the undercard, but Markos has dropped four straight and five of six. Her relative lack of explosiveness and apparent inability to develop a well-rounded game (she's pretty much exclusively a wrestler) put Markos behind the eightball unless or until she proves otherwise. Lock in Souza to take care of business as the narrow favorite.

Conor McGregor Under Police Investigation over Alleged Francesco Facchinetti Assault

Italian DJ and musician Francesco Facchinetti has formally accused UFC star Conor McGregor of assault following an alleged altercation Saturday in Rome.

According to CNN's Jack Guy and Nicola Ruotolo, Facchinetti said he was part of a group invited by McGregor to a party at the St. Regis Hotel in Rome, however, when the group tried to leave, McGregor allegedly struck Facchinetti in the nose and mouth, giving him a concussion.

Regarding McGregor, Facchinetti said: "He is dangerous, he needs to be stopped."

Per Jed Meshew of MMAFighting.com, UFC President Dana White said Tuesday he didn't know anything more than the information that has been made public:

"I honestly don't even know enough about it to comment on it. Obviously I've seen what you guys—you guys have seen more than me, actually, to be honest with you. I haven't talked to Conor, so I don't know what the truth is. I don't know exactly what happened. So to comment on it, I really can't."

McGregor has a history of legal issues, including a 2018 incident that saw him throw a metal dolly through the window of a bus carrying rival Khabib Nurmagomedov.

In January, McGregor was the subject of a lawsuit filed by a woman and her mother accusing McGregor of a 2018 sexual assault. McGregor has denied the allegation. There has been no update on the case since January.

McGregor was also reportedly accused of sexual assault on two other occasions. There has been no update on a second investigation in Dublin since October 2019, while French police in Corsica dismissed a sexual assault case against McGregor in April.

McGregor also pleaded guilty to assault after punching a man at a bar in Dublin in 2019. McGregor was fined for the incident.

Most recently, McGregor got into an altercation with musician Machine Gun Kelly at the MTV Video Music Awards in September. McGregor threw a drink at MGK and had to be held back.

The 33-year-old McGregor is one of the most successful fighters in UFC history with reigns as UFC featherweight and lightweight champion to his credit.

In his career, McGregor is 22-6, although he has lost each of his past two fights and three of his past four.

McGregor's last bout was against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July. McGregor lost the fight by technical knockout when the doctor had to stop the contest after McGregor suffered a broken leg.

The Irishman is still recovering from the injury, and it has yet to be confirmed when he will return to the Octagon.

Conor McGregor Accused of Breaking Italian DJ Francesco Facchinetti's Nose with Punch

Francesco Facchinetti, who is a DJ from Italy, said MMA fighter Conor McGregor broke his nose with a punch to the face.

TMZ Sports reported that Facchinetti said the punch happened at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday and was unprovoked in front of 10 witnesses.

"I took a punch for nothing," the DJ said. "That punch could go to anyone. My friends, my wife, or other friends. That's why I decided to sue Conor McGregor because he is a violent and dangerous person."

Simon Samano of MMA Junkie noted Facchinetti said he and his wife, Wilma Helena Faissol, were spending time with McGregor and the fighter's fiancee, Dee Devlin, when the punch occurred.

Faissol posted the following on her Instagram Stories (h/t TMZ Sports):

Then out of nowhere, he threw a punch in the face of Francesco. He was inviting us to another party. Francesco said, 'Okay, let's go' and he hit him. Luckily, he [Francesco] was very close so he [Conor] couldn't load up on his punch. Francesco flew back, fell on the table, and then on the ground. The first thing that came to mind was 'are we kidding? Is it a show?' Then I was paralyzed.

I turned around and saw that his friends were holding him against the wall because he wanted to continue beating Francesco. Then they took him away. I turned on the light and the guards turned them off. Francesco was bleeding. I wanted to help him and the guards chased us away.

This is far from McGregor's first altercation outside of the Octagon.

Samano noted he had something of a "scuffle" with musician Machine Gun Kelly and actress Megan Fox on the VMAs red carpet.

A video in 2019 showed him smashing a fan's phone. He also punched someone in a bar and threw a dolly at a bus in 2018.

McGregor's last fight in the Octagon for the UFC was when he lost to Dustin Poirier in July.

The world witnessed an instant classic in the heavyweight championship trilogy fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. Among those to take notice was former UFC two-division champion Conor McGregor.

Fury retained his titles with an 11th-round knockout, surviving two knockdowns in the fourth round. McGregor praised both Fury and Wilder for the back-and-forth slugfest.

McGregor added that he appreciates the fact that both Fury and Wilder left it all in the ring, seemingly taking a shot at his old nemesis Dustin Poirier, with whom McGregor had his own trilogy fight.

McGregor suffered his second straight loss to Poirier, by doctor stoppage, after he broke his ankle after the first round of their main event fight at UFC 264 this past July.

Conor McGregor, who has lost three of his past four fights, had some trash talk for Nate Diaz after his brother Nick's TKO loss to Robbie Lawler on Saturday night at UFC 266.

Because of course he did.

He said he enjoyed the bout between Nick Diaz and Lawler, however:

McGregor and Nate Diaz split their two meetings. McGregor and Nick Diaz have never fought.

When McGregor, 33, was one of the top fighters in the UFC, his trash talk had a certain charm to it. But now that he appears to be a middling fighter, at least in the past three years, it has lost some of its shine.

As for the 36-year-old Nate Diaz, he made his return to the Octagon in June after a nearly two-year absence from the UFC, losing to Leon Edwards.

As a rule, it's generally never a good sign if your name is mentioned in the same sentence with 50 Cent after being asked to toss out the first pitch at a baseball game.

Conor McGregor failed that test Tuesday night at Wrigley Field.

Moments before the Chicago Cubs took on the Minnesota Twins, the MMA star unleashed one of the wildest ceremonial throws uncorked this season and immediately conjured up images of the hip-hop mogul's infamous throw.

It's probably for the best there weren't too many fans sitting in the first few rows. Even with the netting behind the field, that ball wasn't going anywhere convenient.

It would also be for the best if McGregor stuck to throwing punches instead of, well, anything else.
