WWE Rumors: Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair 'Heated' Backstage over Title Exchange

Oct 23, 2021

Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair reportedly got into an argument backstage following their belt exchange segment on Friday night's episode of WWE SmackDown.

According to PWInsider (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Sai Mohan), Lynch and Charlotte got "heated" after the show, but things didn't get physical.

Flair reportedly had concern the segment would make her Raw Women's Championship reign look weak.

Charlotte was supposed to hand Lynch the Raw women's title and Lynch was supposed to hand Charlotte the SmackDown women's title, but it reportedly didn't go according to plan.

According to the report, Flair wasn't supposed to throw the belt on the mat, and Lynch wasn't supposed to throw her belt at Charlotte.

Lynch reportedly took issue with Flair "trying to make her look bad" during the segment.

Alex McCarthy of TalkSport added some context to the previous report, noting that Charlotte was supposed to play "cat and mouse" with the title by pulling it away from Becky when she went to grab it, but the belt ended up falling on the mat instead.

McCarthy also noted that Charlotte and Becky have a "strained" relationship after previously being close friends due to a 2018 promo in which Lynch called Flair "plastic."

After the segment, Flair reportedly walked past Gorilla position without speaking to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon, which didn't sit well with McMahon.

Flair reportedly left immediately to catch a flight from Wichita, Kansas, to Orlando, Florida, to be with her fiance, former WWE Superstar and current AEW star Andrade El Idolo.

Andrade wrestled Pac in the main event of AEW Rampage on Friday night and directed the following tweet toward WWE afterward:

It is unclear if Andrade's tweet was in reference to his match or what reportedly happened with Charlotte at SmackDown.

PWInsider did report that Friday's segment got back on track when Sasha Banks showed up to confront Charlotte, at which point Lynch left and walked to the back.

Before Lynch left, she teased facing either Flair or Banks at Survivor Series next month in a champion vs. champion match.

If the plan is for both Becky and Charlotte to remain champions entering Survivor Series, it is fair to wonder if what happened Friday was overblown for dramatic effect in order to generate more interest in the match.

Rumors on WWE Crown Jewel; Lesnar Calls Out Roman Reigns; Top Dolla Talks Young Bucks

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

WWE Reportedly Happy with Crown Jewel

WWE officials are reportedly leaving Saudi Arabia with a positive outlook regarding Thursday's Crown Jewel pay-per-view.

According to PWInsider (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton), people within WWE are "really thrilled" with the show and the fact that it was so well received by WWE's fanbase.

PWInsider also reported that WWE is planning to return to Saudi Arabia for another show during the first quarter of 2022.

While WWE often receives bad publicity for holding shows in Saudi Arabia because of the practices of the country's ruling regime, that wasn't so much the case when it came to Thursday's Crown Jewel show.

One of the reasons for that is the fact that the show delivered three fantastic matches in the form of Edge vs. Seth Rollins inside Hell in a Cell, Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks vs. Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women's Championship and Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

Also, WWE crowned Xavier Woods as King of the Ring and Zelina Vega as the first winner of the Queen's Crown tournament, both of which were popular decisions.

WWE officials reportedly feel as though Crown Jewel was perhaps the company's best offering ever in Saudi Arabia and one of its best events of 2021.

Given the quality of the matches and the booking decisions, it is difficult to argue with that notion.

Perhaps most importantly, Crown Jewel maintained the heat of Reigns vs. Lesnar and left open the possibility of another match between them in the near future, which would undoubtedly be worthy of a major pay-per-view main event.

Lesnar Calls Out Reigns for SmackDown

Following his controversial loss to Reigns at Crown Jewel, Lesnar had some strong words regarding The Tribal Chief.

WWE tweeted the following quote courtesy of The Beast Incarnate on Thursday:

Lesnar and Reigns met in the main event of Crown Jewel with the Universal Championship on the line, and the highly anticipated battle of behemoths did not disappoint.

Things heated up after the referee inadvertently got knocked out, as Paul Heyman tossed the Universal title belt into the ring between Reigns and Lesnar.

Reigns and Lesnar fought over the belt until The Usos showed up and hit Lesnar with a double superkick. Reigns then used the belt against Lesnar and pinned him to retain the title.

Heyman looked to be in turmoil following the match, leaving fans to wonder whether he was actually trying to help Reigns or Lesnar.

The build toward Thursday's match focused on Heyman's allegiance, and since nothing was solved on that front at Crown Jewel, it is a virtual guarantee there will be a rematch.

Day 1 on Jan. 1 and the Royal Rumble in late January are potential targets for the rematch, or WWE could perhaps hold off on it until WrestleMania 38 in April.

First, all signs point toward another confrontation between Reigns and Lesnar on Friday's SmackDown, and it promises to make for an explosive situation.

Top Dolla Talks Feud with Young Bucks

Hit Row member Top Dolla spoke up this week regarding his recent Twitter feud with AEW tag team The Young Bucks.

The rivalry between Top Dolla and The Young Bucks began last week when Top Dolla tweeted about wrestlers who wear sneakers on television but not in real life:

https://twitter.com/AJFrancis410/status/1448388687503441931

It was immediately assumed that Top Dolla was referencing Nick and Matt Jackson since they wear expensive pairs of Jordans on AEW programming as part of their heel persona.

According to WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton, The Young Bucks responded by changing their Twitter bio to: "Spent more on sneakers in September than the entire NXT roster did."

Top Dolla later clapped back with a creative diss track that once again seemed to be aimed at The Young Bucks:

https://twitter.com/AJFrancis410/status/1449032896560435202

Speaking this week on his Jobbing Out podcast (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Top Dolla had plenty to say regarding The Bucks:

The craziest part about all of this is I used to go watch them cats, and they just got in their feelings because they let their Twitter minions gas them up. And they realized very quickly, I'm not the one to play with. The thing is, to me, when they first did the NXT bio, I was like, oh, that's rude. I’m not even in NXT anymore, and I know that you know that. So for you to do that, kind of felt like you were saying I should still be in NXT or you just want to s--t on NXT for no reason, which is A, disrespectful and B, unnecessary.

But even that I was like, you know what, I don't feel like dealing with these Twitter people. I'm gonna let these boys slide, then they updated the bio again, and it said, 'We'll make you trend just by mentioning you in our bio.' And I took that personally. I was like, oh, okay. That's a very interesting comment because to me, I read that as, you're a nobody, and we could make you popular.

Regardless of who was most responsible, Top Dolla undoubtedly received a great deal of attention on social media last week and got people talking about his call-up to the main roster.

Along with Isaiah "Swerve" Scott, Ashante Thee Adonis and B-Fab, Top Dolla helped form one of the most popular and fastest-rising stables in wrestling in the form of Hit Row.

It was less than six months ago that Hit Row debuted on NXT, and the group is already set to make a big move, as it was selected to SmackDown as part of the WWE Draft.

With the draft results officially taking effect Friday, Hit Row could make its main roster debut as soon as this week's episode of SmackDown.

WWE Hall of Famer "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan was released from the hospital Friday after undergoing emergency surgery.

Per TMZ Sports, Duggan's wife Debra shared the news on Instagram: "After 2 nights in the hospital and emergency surgery yesterday, guess who just came home? Thank you to the amazing doctors and nurses at Kershaw County Medical Center which is now, MUSC. ... Now home to fully recuperate."

The post included a photo of Duggan in a wheelchair giving a thumbs up to the camera.

According to TMZ, the 67-year-old Duggan underwent emergency surgery at a South Carolina hospital on Wednesday.

Debra tweeted the following from Duggan's account Wednesday before and after he went into surgery:

https://twitter.com/OfficialHacksaw/status/1450910857009917956

Almost exactly three years ago, Duggan was hospitalized after feeling chest pains. It was discovered that his heart had gone into atrial fibrillation, which put him at risk for strokes and blood clots.

Duggan is one of the most beloved figures in WWE history, primarily because of his run with the company from 1987-93.

He was a hugely popular babyface, and although he never won a championship with the company, he did make history in 1988 by winning the first-ever Royal Rumble match.

Duggan went on to wrestle in WCW from 1994-2001, holding the United States and Television Championships one time each.

He returned to WWE in 2005 and has made sporadic appearances for the company over the past several years, even participating in the 2012 Royal Rumble match as a surprise entrant.

Known for carrying around a 2x4 and belting out his signature yell of "Hoooooooo!" Duggan is one of the most recognizable characters to ever grace a wrestling ring.

The 67-year-old was briefly hospitalized in September 2019 for what his wife called a "severe infection."

Duggan was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 1998, which caused him to briefly put his wrestling career on hold. He eventually returned to the ring with WCW and subsequently made sporadic appearances for a number of promotions.

The New York native first rose to prominence with Mid-South Wrestling in the early 1980s before his career took off with the WWF. He and Ted DiBiase engaged in a legendary feud in Mid-South.

Shortly after signing with the WWF, though, Duggan and the Iron Sheik were arrested for marijuana possession in New Jersey in May 1987. He told Pro Wrestling Torch's Wade Keller in 2012 he thought the arrest ruined any shot he had of winning a championship with the promotion.

Carrying his signature two-by-four, Duggan nonetheless became a fan favorite over the years. He also won the first-ever Royal Rumble match in 1988.

In 1994, Hacksaw joined the growing number of WWF stars to sign with WCW and beat Steve Austin for the United States Championship in his first match at Fall Brawl.

WWE enshrined Duggan into its Hall of Fame in 2011.

Braun Strowman Confirms AEW Talks

More than four months removed from his WWE release, Braun Strowman is now free to sign with another promotion if he wants to do so.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated's John Maakaron, Strowman seemed to confirm he's had discussions with AEW:

Yeah, we've sat down and discussed stuff like that with my agent and things like that. We're just trying to find a fit now where everything kind of will work together since now there's so many things that I'm working on in my personal life. I don't have as much time to devote to the full-time schedule to wrestle now.

Strowman has reportedly attracted the attention of Impact Wrestling. Fightful Select reported (via Kellie Haulotte of Wrestling Inc.) earlier this month that Impact was "heavily interested" in the former WWE Universal champion.

The Monster Among Men tweeted Oct. 3 that "the real game of chess begins." The date marked four months after his release from WWE and the end of his non-compete clause.

AEW would be an interesting fit for Strowman. He doesn't really have the working style of the top performers, but his presence would be a different look for a company that has been open to letting people try things out.

Alexa Bliss Teasing Gimmick Change?

Alexa Bliss has been off WWE television since losing to Charlotte Flair at Extreme Rules, but the former SmackDown women's champion could be returning soon.

Based on a recent tweet from Bliss, she might have a different look upon returning:

Bliss has gone through several different personas throughout her tenure in WWE. She has most recently been a supernatural being capable of controlling other Superstars with mind control and a doll.

Flair appeared to put an end to that particular gimmick when she destroyed Lilly after pinning Bliss at the Sept. 26 pay-per-view.

Per Mike Johnson of PW Insider, Bliss was written off television before undergoing sinus surgery.

WWE drafted Bliss from SmackDown to Raw earlier this month. She could potentially return as a babyface because after Bianca Belair, Rhea Ripley and Nikki A.S.H., there is a dearth of fan favorites for the women on the red brand.

Undertaker Reportedly Not Appearing at Crown Jewel

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qDw4oqxYC0?start=5s

Thanks to an online video that has been going around recently, there's been speculation that The Undertaker would make an appearance at Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia.

The rumor began Oct. 10 when Hussam Al Mayman of Arab News wrote about a video showing the Dead Man being posted on social media accounts for Turki Al-Sheikh, chairman of the board of the General Entertainment Authority and chairman of Riyadh Season.

Per Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline.com, the video featuring The Undertaker "is from 2019 and there doesn't appear to be anything to the story."

Crown Jewel is already a loaded show with Roman Reigns defending the universal title against Brock Lesnar and Becky Lynch taking on Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks for the SmackDown women's championship.

Even though WWE does love a good surprise, it doesn't make sense to not promote what would be The Undertaker's first appearance at a major event since Survivor Series in November 2020.

The Undertaker confirmed his retirement in the final episode of The Last Ride documentary series that aired last year.

Of course, retirements in professional wrestling rarely stick. But given the way that WWE sent him out, complete with a retirement ceremony at the end of the Survivor Series, Undertaker certainly doesn't seem inclined to wrestle again.

Chris Jericho Trolls Roman Reigns; Rumors on WWE Retro Raw and Bray Wyatt's New Name

Jericho Trolls Roman Reigns

The online war of words between WWE and AEW hit another level over the weekend thanks to the 30-minute head-to-head showdown between SmackDown and Rampage on Friday.

Chris Jericho got in on the fun by trolling WWE universal champion Roman Reigns:

After ratings for the two shows were released Monday, both companies were claiming victory. SmackDown's 30 minutes on FS1 beat Rampage 866,000 to 578,000 in total viewers.

In the 18-49 demographic, which has historically been regarded as the most coveted in television, AEW won in the ratings during its half-hour against SmackDown:

Jericho's tweet is a reference to Reigns' segment with Brock Lesnar going up against a match between Ruby Soho and the Bunny.

It took a while for WWE to start acting like it was in a ratings war, but it seems apparent Vince McMahon is operating that way. He loaded up the 30 minutes that SmackDown was on FS1 with a Raw women's title match between Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks.

The show-closing angle involved Reigns and Lesnar in what is, by far, the biggest feud going in WWE right now.

Regardless of where fans stand in the WWE vs. AEW divide, there's no denying that competition between the two brands is good for people watching. WWE can no longer afford to be complacent with its television.

AEW is still a young, growing brand that has proved to have wide appeal to wrestling fans in just two years of existence.

Retro Raw Show Reportedly in the Works

It's been a few years since WWE ran an old-school version of Raw, though that will reportedly change very soon.

Per Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men Podcast (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc.), WWE is planning a Retro Raw show for January.

An exact date was not specified, though the first opportunity will be on the first show of the year (Jan. 3).

WWE has held old-school episodes of Raw multiple times, and the most recent one occurred Jan. 6, 2014.

More recently, there was a Raw Reunion show in July 2019 that featured appearances from WWE legends such as Steve Austin, Mick Foley, Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Hulk Hogan.

It's unclear if a Retro Raw show would only feature the old-school stage set up or if past icons will make an appearance.

WWE usually loads up its themed shows with Superstars both past and present, so it would be safe to assume this one is no different if it happens.

Bray Wyatt Finds New Name

With his 90-day non-compete clause set to expire soon, Bray Wyatt is thinking about the next step in his wrestling career.

Per Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Michael Perry of Ringside News), the former WWE Superstar is currently planning to use Windham as his ring name going forward.

Windham Rotunda is his legal name. WWE adopted the Bray Wyatt moniker for the two-time universal champion.

Wyatt was a surprise release by WWE on July 31. He had been booked and promoted as one of the top stars in the company for years prior to the move.

There has been a lot of speculation about where he will end up. Meltzer noted that AEW president Tony Khan has said in interviews he is interested in talking to the former WWE Superstar.

Wyatt has also been connected to Impact Wrestling, but Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select (h/t Joshua Gagnon of Wrestling Inc.) reported earlier this month the two sides were not close to a deal.

Wyatt's stature as one of the biggest stars in WWE over the past five years and his ability in the ring will make him desirable to any of the major promotions.

The end of Wyatt's 90-day non-compete clause is Oct. 29, so fans will likely get an answer on where he is going soon.

WWE Star Jeff Hardy Says 'I Don’t Know How Much Longer I’m Going to Be Wrestling'

Jeff Hardy doesn't know how much longer he has in his WWE career, but he knows he wants to spend part of it as a heel.

Hardy acknowledged he's at a point in his career where his high-flying days are numbered in an interview with Ryan Satin on Out of Character (via Ringside News):

“It is weird because I know I’m not as fast as I used to be, especially since I broke my leg back in 2015. I ended up having knee surgery. I just can’t jump like I used to. Things are a lot slower, but it’s cool, especially when I still see paint on my action figure. That never gets old. That makes all that time painting my face worth it. Then when I see the action figure, I remember that image I had in my mind that day before I brought it to life.

I’m just doing my job. It’s my time to give back, but I think there’s something that I have to figure out as well and is kind of needed because I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be wrestling, almost like a darker side of Jeff Hardy I think, needs to come out. I haven’t figured it out yet, but I’ve had these crazy ideas. I wrote down a few of them. It’s my time to focus more on the character stuff instead of the high-flying moves, the TLC matches, and all of that stuff.  I think there’s something that’s waiting to be unleashed within me.”

Hardy turned 44 in August. While there are several stars still performing at elite levels into their 40s, few have Hardy's level of wear and tear. Innovation has come at a cost to Hardy, but he remains over with fans and can still tell a solid story in the ring.

Whether WWE has anything for him is another question entirely. He's been on a stretch of listlessness of late and was even inserted into the 24/7 Championship picture before WWE thought better and removed him.

It's possible, if not likely, Hardy will have to follow his brother, Matt, into All Elite Wrestling if he ever wants to explore the side of his character he discussed with Satin.

Dolph Ziggler Trolls Goldberg; Samoa Joe Talks CM Punk; Latest Braun Strowman Rumors

Ziggler Trolls Goldberg

Dolph Ziggler knows what it's like to be on the wrong end of a Goldberg spear.

And another one.

And another one.

It turns out Ziggler might've seen his life flash before his eyes taking those bumps.

"A lot of times you don’t [think about dying in the ring] but maybe if you’re in there with Goldberg, you think about it a lot more," Ziggler told XeniaDidThat.

This is far from the first time Goldberg has been accused of being unsafe. He famously ended Bret Hart's career in WCW, leading to significant heat between the two. Matt Riddle also had backstage heat after saying Goldberg was "unsafe, dangerous and a liability to everyone else."

Never much of an elite worker during his prime, Goldberg is now 54 years old and a part-time performer. We saw how badly things can go in a Goldberg match in 2019 against the Undertaker in Saudi Arabia, but WWE has kept bringing him back because of his name recognition.

Hopefully his match against Bobby Lashley on Thursday will be a little cleaner than more recent Goldberg contests.

Samoa Joe Says He Knew CM Punk Would Return to Wrestling

If you ask Samoa Joe, CM Punk's return to wrestling was a long time coming.

During an appearance on the Kurt Angle Show, Joe said he knew Punk would be back in wrestling in some capacity once he joined WWE Backstage.

“If I know one thing about Punk, [it’s that] if he’s out on something, he’s out on it. You won’t see him being around it, you won’t see him looking at it, you won’t see him staring at it, it’s out of his life and the minute I saw him on the FOX set, I knew his eyes were turning back towards it," fJoe said.

“I think he was just looking for the right place at the right time and he wanted to be happy with it and I think he is. From what I’ve seen, I would gather that he is, so I’m stoked for him and I’m happy to see him back.”

WWE Backstage was a weekly program on Fox Sports 1 from November 2019 until June 2020, with Punk serving as an occasional contributor. The program returned in January for a special for the Royal Rumble but is essentially canceled.

Punk, who retired from in-ring competition in 2014 amid a dispute with WWE, returned to the ring this year with AEW.

Strowman Meets With Impact's Scott D'Amore

Impact Wrestling has long been the favorite to land Braun Strowman once his 90-day non-compete ended, and it appears they're getting closer to a deal.

PWInsider reported Strowman met with Impact executive Scott D'Amore over the weekend at a hotel bar in Detroit.

Strowman could make his debut as soon as Saturday's Bound for Glory pay-per-view, which will also see the in-ring return of The IInspiration (formerly The IIconics).  Wrestling as “The Titan” Adam Scherr, Strowman made his first post-WWE appearance earlier this month in a win over EC3.

HBO Max released a trailer Saturday for the upcoming Peacemaker series starring WWE Superstar John Cena.

The trailer features Cena reprising his role as the superhero Peacemaker, which was a role he first tackled this summer in the critically acclaimed film The Suicide Squad:

Peacemaker the series appears to pick up where The Suicide Squad left off with Peacemaker recovering in the hospital after being left for dead.

In the trailer, Peacemaker is told he can avoid going back to jail if he serves as a vigilante who targets criminals.

In The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker was an antihero of sorts who was all for murder and violence in the name of keeping the peace. He was also something of a comedic character.

Cena captured the essence of Peacemaker perfectly in the movie, and all signs point toward the new series being a huge hit as well.

The 44-year-old Cena has carved out a highly successful acting career for himself after first reaching stardom in WWE.

Cena was the company's top star for well over a decade, and he is tied for the all-time record with 16 world title reigns.

He made a brief return to WWE over the summer and headlined SummerSlam in August against Roman Reigns. The match was won by Reigns, allowing Cena to once again focus on his outside endeavors.

Cena will return to the spotlight January 13, which is when Peacemaker will begin streaming on HBO Max.
