What's the Next Milestone For Roman Reigns Amid Legendary WWE Run?

Nov 30, 2022
Roman Reigns is having a legendary run atop WWE, but what is his next milestone?
Roman Reigns is having a legendary run atop WWE, but what is his next milestone?

Roman Reigns has been on a historic run with the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

The Tribal Chief doesn't even lose in non-title matches such as The Bloodline's victory on Saturday night at Survivor Series WarGames.

While there is seemingly no end in sight to his era of dominance, and he's checked off many records along the way, things are about to slow down.

In fact, Reigns' next major milestone isn't on the horizon for at least a few more months.

He has reached a level where the next advancements become increasingly harder to match or surpass.

Reigns has already shattered Brock Lesnar's previous record for the longest Universal Championship reign of 504 days. The Head of the Table is over 800. Even when he reaches the 1,000 mark, it won't be especially newsworthy.

But his WWE Championship run is only at less than a year, putting him well below the top spot.

Just this week, Reigns overtook Diesel's rank at No. 16. Next up is The Rock at 378 days.

To crack the top 10 and overtake Shawn Michaels, CM Punk, AJ Styles, Randy Savage and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Reigns has to make it to 530 days, which should be May 30, 2023.

It will take until September 28, 2024 for him to overtake the fifth spot Pedro Morales has, while December 28, 2032 is the day he will surpass Bruno Sammartino's two combined reigns.

Even looking at single runs, Reigns is not even at the 250 mark for the WWE title and will need over 100 more days to reach the top 10.

The soonest Reigns can reach a notable achievement is actually WrestleMania 39 on April 1, 2023.

If he retains his title on Night 1 of next year's Show of Shows, he'll make history as the only WWE Superstar to do so three times in a row.

The likes of Hulk Hogan have walked out of 'Mania holding the top title three times or more, but they haven't been the champion heading into the show. Hogan retained twice and won the belt from someone else on three other occasions.

Reigns is in the unique spot where he's holding the same title he retained over Daniel Bryan and Edge at WrestleMania 37, held that Universal Championship and unified Lesnar's WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38. If he wins again this year, he will have retained the same belt in an uninterrupted title reign three years in a row.

No one—not even Austin or Cena—can say they've walked into three WrestleManias without losing their title and walked out still with that same gold around their waist.

So far, nothing has been confirmed for WrestleMania 39. There's no telling who his challenger will be, or if he'll even still have the Universal Championship come April.

But based on his track record, it is extremely likely The Head of the Table will be able to check this achievement off his list and do something that will probably never happen again.

That is, of course, unless Reigns makes it to WrestleMania 40 and turns this into a four-year accolade.

Despite suffering a knee injury during his match against Roman Reigns at WWE Crown Jewel earlier this month, Logan Paul reportedly may be healthy enough to compete at WrestleMania 39 in April.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Paul's injuries suffered at Crown Jewel were not as severe as originally feared. While he tore his MCL and meniscus, he did not tear his ACL.

Meltzer added that the expectation is Paul will avoid surgery and instead opt for rehab, which would give him "plenty of time" to get himself ready for WrestleMania.

After Paul turned in a spectacular performance in the main event of Crown Jewel in a losing effort to Reigns, the YouTube megastar divulged that he tore his MCL and meniscus, and "potentially" tore his ACL as well:

Paul's brother, Jake Paul, gave a positive update Wednesday during an interview with DAZN Boxing (h/t WrestlingInc's Nick Miller), saying Logan was "doing better than expected" and did not suffer a torn ACL.

Crown Jewel marked only Paul's third WWE match and his second singles bout. Despite that, he looked like a seasoned veteran and gave Reigns one of the best matches of his two-plus-year title run.

Given Paul's star power outside WWE and the fact that he has taken to pro wrestling like a fish to water, he is quickly becoming a huge asset for the company.

Thus far, Paul has been part of three of WWE's biggest events in WrestleMania, SummerSlam and Crown Jewel, and there is little doubt that WWE would love to utilize him at WrestleMania again next year.

WWE is always looking to get more outside eyes on its product, and Paul is the type of figure who is capable of doing that due to the wide reach of his YouTube videos and Impaulsive podcast.

Paul has spoken extensively about his WWE endeavors on his podcast, and as he continues to build up interest in what he is doing in the world of pro wrestling, it stands to bring in a whole new demographic of viewers.

Losing Paul, for an extended period of time, would have been a major hit for WWE and what it is building with him, but every indication is that disaster has been averted.

Kurt Angle Says WWE Contacted Him About Non-Wrestling Role at WrestleMania 39

WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle suggested this week that he may have some involvement with WrestleMania 39 in Inglewood, California, next year.

Appearing on the Wrassingh Show (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Angle provided some details on his conversations with WWE regarding WrestleMania:

"They're talking about maybe me doing something at WrestleMania," Angle said. "They are always reaching out to me to help do media and stuff like that, kind of be an ambassador for the company. I like doing that. I don't mind because I can't wrestle anymore. It's just an idea. It won't be in a wrestling capacity at all. There is nothing there yet."

Angle, who won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling at the 1996 Summer Olympics, is widely regarded as one of the greatest in-ring performers in WWE history.

During his first WWE run from 1999 to 2006, Angle was a six-time world champion, plus he held the intercontinental, United States, European and tag team titles one time each.

After a lengthy stint in Impact Wrestling, Angle made his long-awaited return to WWE in 2017 and went on to wrestle several matches the following year, leading up to his retirement match against Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35 in 2019.

The 53-year-old Angle retired from the ring because of advancing age and mounting injuries, and it now seems unlikely that he will have another match.

That hasn't stopped WWE from bringing him in for appearances on occasion, with the most recent example being the Aug. 29 episode of Raw in his hometown of Pittsburgh, which saw him turn down an offer from Chad Gable to join Alpha Academy.

If Angle has a non-wrestling role at WrestleMania 39, it would make sense for him to perhaps get involved with Alpha Academy again since Gable is a former Olympic wrestler just like Angle.

Another possibility would be for Angle to do something with 2020 Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Gable Steveson. While Steveson is under contract with WWE and hit Gable with a suplex at WrestleMania 38 earlier this year, he has yet to wrestle his first match for the promotion.

If there are plans for him to make his in-ring debut either at WrestleMania 39 or leading up to it, Angle would be an ideal choice to potentially be in his corner due to their similar backgrounds.

Top WrestleMania 39 Matches Reportedly in Place

WrestleMania 39 is 11 months away, but WWE reportedly already has an idea of what it wants to do at the massive event.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc's Marc Middleton), WWE chairman Vince McMahon has plans in place for some of the top matches at WrestleMania 39.

WrestleMania 39 could be one of the biggest events in WWE history, as it will take place at the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

There are many big matches and moments that WWE could put on the card, including a match between Roman Reigns and The Rock, as well as Cody Rhodes possibly achieving his lifelong dream of becoming WWE champion.

WWE often catches flak for booking on a week-to-week basis and not having a long-term vision, but when it comes to WrestleMania, one can only assume that the company has plans in mind throughout the year.

That is especially true if WWE does want someone like The Rock to be part of the show. Since The Rock is one of the biggest and most successful movie stars in the world, he has to be locked in well ahead of time.

WWE hasn't given any indication that Reigns vs. The Rock is on for WrestleMania 39, but it is considered by most to be the biggest possible dream match WWE can do, so it is a safe bet that WWE would jump at the chance to make it happen.

Money in the Bank Stipulation Reportedly Not Changing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaQf4Nc7DeE

Despite confusion regarding the stakes at this year's Money in the Bank pay-per-view, WWE reportedly isn't straying from the traditional format.

In a Money in the Bank preview that has aired multiple times since last weekend's WrestleMania Backlash event, Rhodes said that the winners of the men's and women's Money in the Bank ladder matches will earn the chance to main event WrestleMania.

Since its inception, the Money in the Bank ladder matches have earned a contract for a guaranteed title match that can be cashed in at any time.

According to Meltzer (h/t Middleton), many within WWE believe that will continue to be the case this year and that the wording in the commercial may have simply been a mistake.

A source within WWE also indicated to Meltzer that the top matches being considered for WrestleMania 39 are not expected to involve Money in the Bank winners.

It is possible that WWE accidentally conveyed a confusing message in the Money in the Bank commercial, but it is notable that it aired the commercial more than once rather than making any changes.

Winning Money in the Bank technically could mean that someone cashes in for a title shot in a big match at WrestleMania, but they aren't confined to doing so.

Since many seem to expect Rhodes to be in a world title match at WrestleMania, perhaps the plan is for him to win Money in the Bank and ultimately use it for that purpose.

MJF Reportedly Considering Leaving AEW When Contract Expires

MJF is reportedly frustrated with AEW and may choose to leave the company when his contract expires.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Middleton), MJF is "leaning toward" departing AEW when his contract expires on Jan. 1, 2024. If that happens, WWE would be the only logical landing spot for the 26-year-old rising star.

MJF has been open about his impending free agency and his intention to test the market in interviews. Per Fightful, his desire to hear multiple offers is legitimate and not simply part of his heel persona.

It was also noted by Fightful that there was previously an issue between MJF and AEW president Tony Khan because of MJF doing an interview with Ariel Helwani without notifying AEW or asking for permission first.

MJF and Khan reportedly hashed things out during a meeting, but the "sentiment hasn't necessarily lasted" for MJF.

Another part of Fightful's report noted that MJF and AEW have had contract negotiations, but it isn't believed that the two sides are anywhere close to striking a deal.

One thing potentially working in WWE's favor when it comes to signing MJF is that he has links to the company.

WWE executive Bruce Prichard worked closely with MJF in MLW before MJF joined AEW. Also, MJF is close with Rhodes, who has been booked like a massive star since making the leap from AEW to WWE last month.

WWE undoubtedly has the money needed to compete with AEW to sign MJF, and now that it can present MJF with an example of an AEW guy being pushed to the top in WWE, it may be a highly attractive option for the remarkable talent.
