Real Madrid Outlasts Chelsea in Thriller, Advances to Champions League Semifinals

Apr 12, 2022

Karim Benzema is inevitable.

The French star scored the winning goal in extra time as Real Madrid sent Chelsea packing 5-4 on aggregate in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

Benzema put Chelsea to the sword in the first leg with a hat trick at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel didn't mince words about his club's precarious position. He said immediately after the 3-1 first-leg defeat on Wednesday that the Blues would "get hammered at the Bernabeu" with a similar showing in the return fixture.

Tuchel's tone didn't change much Monday.

"It is one of the biggest challenges to perform away at the Bernabeu," he told reporters. "It is even more difficult if you have to earn a certain result, if you need to win with a minimum of two goals or better or maybe a three-goal difference, that makes it almost impossible and very, very difficult, but still it is worth trying."

If the German was trying to deploy some reverse psychology, it certainly seemed to work in the first half.

Mason Mount opened the scoring in the 15th minute, continuing what has been a rich vein of form.

Beyond just Mount's goal, Chelsea registered eight total shots and two on target. Real Madrid was limited to three shots, all of which were wide of the mark.

Perhaps the first-place club in La Liga was guilty of resting on its laurels a bit because Madrid flattered to deceive in the opening half. And with the abolition of the away goals rule, the one-goal aggregate lead wasn't as advantageous as it would've been in years past.

Chelsea only needed one more tally to make things really interesting, and Antonio Rudiger duly delivered in the 51st minute.

Real Madrid had reason to feel aggrieved, though, since the goal came from a corner that shouldn't have been a corner in the first place.

Marcos Alonso appeared to net Chelsea's third goal of the match in the 62nd minute when he fired a right-footed shot inside the far post from close range. However, the goal was taken off the board when he was judged to have handled the ball prior to the attempt.

Fresh off a brace in the Blues' 6-0 demolition of Southampton, Timo Werner left no room for interpretation when he feinted twice and managed to sneak the ball just under Thibaut Courtois in the 75th minute.

Chelsea's 4-3 aggregate advantage didn't hold for very long. In the 80th minute, Luka Modric floated an inch-perfect pass to Rodrygo, who volleyed home the equalizer. Between the assist and the finish, it was a masterful piece of attacking.

In the second minute of second-half injury time, Christian Pulisic could've dealt the decisive blow. His volley from inside the box sailed over the bar.

While that was a costly miss, Tuchel had plenty of reason to believe his players could make the vital breakthrough in extra time.

Then Benzema happened.

As many have reflected already, the attention and credit being paid to the 34-year-old are long overdue. Because he shared the pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo, his contributions at Real Madrid have often been overlooked.

Now that he's the main man, it's impossible to ignore Benzema's contributions, which puts his time at the club into a different context. He has undoubtedly earned his place alongside the greatest players to step into the dressing room at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid will wait for the second leg of Manchester City and Atletico Madrid's matchup to learn of its opponent in the semifinals. City holds a 1-0 lead ahead of Wednesday's clash at Wanda Metropolitano in the Spanish capital.

Cleveland Cavaliers governor Dan Gilbert has joined a group bidding for ownership of the English Premier League's Chelsea FC.

The Ricketts family, which owns the Chicago Cubs, is also part of the group.

"We are excited to join the Ricketts family and Ken Griffin for their bid to acquire Chelsea, one of the most admired football clubs and professional sports teams in the world," Gilbert said in a statement. "We have great respect and deep admiration for the long and winning tradition of Chelsea and their millions of fans across the world. Rock Entertainment Group will approach the bid for Chelsea with the same philosophy as we operate our other professional sports teams: an open mind and a listening ear to the fan base, ample investment and an unwavering commitment to both winning on the pitch and serving the community."

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is selling the club amid calls for him to face sanctions related to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has a longstanding relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin and was an advocate of Putin taking over for former President Boris Yeltsin.

Abramovich has been involved in peace talks between the two countries. He, along with Ukrainian peace negotiators, showed signs of being poisoned after a meeting in Kyiv last month.

The billionaire said selling the club is in its best interest.

Several prominent buyers have emerged as potential suitors, and a decision on a new ownership group is expected soon. Raine Group, which is handling the sale, initially hoped to have a buyer in place by the end of March.

Chelsea is valued at $3.2 billion by Forbes.  Abramovich has been seeking at least $4 billion during the bidding process.

Gilbert has a net worth of $19.9 billion.

Roman Abramovich's Assets Frozen; Needs UK Government's Permission to Sell Chelsea

The UK government froze the assets of Roman Abramovich on Thursday, which will halt the billionaire's attempted sale of Premier League club Chelsea.

Reuters' Michael Holden and William James reported Thursday the move, which included several oligarchs with links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, effectively puts the Blues under government control in wake of Russia's military invasion of Ukraine.

"There can be no safe havens for those who have supported Putin's vicious assault on Ukraine," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. "We will be ruthless in pursuing those who enable the killing of civilians, destruction of hospitals and illegal occupation of sovereign allies."

Along with a ban on transactions, the ruling also prevents Abramovich from entering or staying in Great Britain. A spokesperson for the Russian businessman declined comment to Reuters on the sanctions.

The government's decision has also resulted in Three requesting to temporarily suspend its sponsorship deal:

Abramovich announced Feb. 26, two days after Russia's invasion of Ukraine began, he was handing over control of Chelsea to the club's charitable foundation.

He provided an updated statement March 2, saying he'd put the club up for sale, with all proceeds set to go to those impacted by Russia's military action:

The sale of the club will not be fast-tracked but will follow due process. I will not be asking for any loans to be repaid. This has never been about business nor money for me, but about pure passion for the game and club. Moreover, I have instructed my team to set up a charitable foundation where all net proceeds from the sale will be donated. The foundation will be for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine. This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery.

Sources told ESPN that Abramovich received "multiple bids" for Chelsea before the asset freeze was enacted, but none reached his nearly $4 billion valuation of the club.

Among those to enter an offer was a group led by Todd Boehly, who has stakes in MLB's Los Angeles Dodgers and the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, and Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, per ESPN.

A spokesperson for the Chelsea Supporters' Trust released a statement to ESPN asking for supporters to become involved in discussions about the team's future.

"The CST implores the government to conduct a swift process to minimize the uncertainty over Chelsea's future ... and for supporters to be given a golden share as part of a sale of the club," the spokesperson said.

The UK government said some of Chelsea's operations, including matches, can continue uninterrupted amid the ownership uncertainty.

Dodgers' Part-Owner Todd Boehly Reportedly Leading Group in Bid to Buy Chelsea

Todd Boehly, a part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, will lead a group set to make a formal bid on Chelsea, according to James Olley of ESPN FC.

The consortium will reportedly also include Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss and at least one other person.

The Premier League club is available after Russian owner Roman Abramovich announced Tuesday he would put it up for sale amid suggestions he and other powerful Russians could have their assets frozen by the U.K. government following the Russian government's military invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich is a former Russian government official and a former ally of Russian president Vladimir Putin, who ordered the attack on Ukraine.

"I believe this is in the best interest of the club, the fans, the employees, as well as the club's sponsors and partners," Abramovich said in a statement.

Raine Group has been appointed to take care of the sale and imposed a March 15 deadline for offers. According to Olley, Abramovich is seeking at least £3 billion for Chelsea, while Boehly's group values the club around £2.2 billion, which Boehly offered for it in 2019.

Wyss adds significant purchasing power to the latest bid, with Forbes estimating his net worth at $6 billion.

Boehly was part of the Guggenheim Baseball Management group that purchased the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012 for $2 billion. In 2021, he purchased a stake in the Los Angeles Lakers.

Both the Dodgers and Lakers are among the top 20 most valuable sports franchises in the world, per Forbes, each worth over $3.5 billion. Chelsea was ranked in a tie for 25th at $3.2 billion.

Chelsea has also seen tremendous success in recent years, holding both the Champions League and the Club World Cup titles.

The club's value has likely drawn plenty of worldwide attention since going up for sale. UFC star Conor McGregor is among those who have shown interest in placing a bid.

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has participated in peace talks between Ukraine and Russia.

"I can confirm Roman Abramovich was contacted by the Ukrainian side for support in achieving a peaceful resolution, and that he has been trying to help ever since," a spokeswoman for Abramovich said. "Considering what is at stake, we would ask for understanding as to why we have not commented on either the situation as such or his involvement."

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine last week and has received worldwide condemnation. The two countries have been at war on Ukrainian territory ever since, with 352 civilians, including 14 children, having died as of Sunday, according to the Ukrainian health ministry. There has also been massive amounts of civilian property damage.

Abramovich, a Russian who made a vast fortune from oil amid the downfall of the Soviet Union, was previously known to be a close confidant of Putin. He played a critical role in helping get Putin on the presidential radar as a successor to Boris Yeltsin, with whom Abramovich also had a strong relationship.

During Putin's reign, Abramovich served as governor of the Russian province of Chukotka from 2000 to 2008.

Abramovich handed control of Chelsea's day-to-day operations over to the club's charitable foundation trustees on Saturday. The move came amid suggestions from the British government that certain wealthy Russians would face "very strong actions."

"During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities," Abramovich said in a statement.

"I have always taken decisions with the Club's best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea's charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC. I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the club, players, staff, and fans."

Russia has faced pressure, both within its own country and from outside forces, to withdraw from Ukraine. Russian citizens have taken to the streets in protests despite the threat of being arrested, and the United States, along with other global powers, have placed significant financial sanctions on Russian banks and other entities.

The peace talks are ongoing, but there has been little indication that Russia intends to agree to a ceasefire.

Liverpool Beats Chelsea in 2022 Carabao Cup Final After Dramatic Penalty Shootout

After 120 minutes of scoreless play, Liverpool finally emerged with a Carabao Cup title after defeating Chelsea in penalties.

The squad finished with an 11-10 advantage on penalty kicks after the match finished 0-0 through regular play. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was subbed on for Chelsea at the end of extra time, but it was the goalkeeper's miss that sealed the win for Liverpool.

It came after each of the first 21 players made their attempts for the two teams.

It helped lead to Liverpool's first win in the EFL Cup since 2012, ending a stretch of four straight wins for Manchester City. This could be the start of a big 2021-22 campaign for the club, which is still in contention in Champions League, FA Cup and the Premier League.

The latest win was certainly a memorable one as either side could have come away with a victory.

There were no goals in regulation, but the match didn't lack excitement. Both sides had numerous chances, combining for 31 shots with 10 on goal.

Liverpool seemed destined to score multiple times before being denied by Edouard Mendy, who was outstanding in net for Chelsea:

https://twitter.com/ESPNFC/status/1497996310913294339

The goalkeeper was arguably the best player on the pitch for either side:

Caoimhin Kelleher also played well in net for Liverpool, but Chelsea will likely regret not taking advantage of the many close chances during the match:

The ball did find the back of the net several times, but none of them ended up on the scoresheet.

Chelsea had several attempts called back for offsides—including a questionable flag on Romelu Lukaku—while a Liverpool goal was overturned by VAR because of a foul by Virgil van Dijk.

In a match that could have easily had five or six goals, the score remained 0-0 through 90 minutes.

The battle continued into extra time, but neither side was able to break the deadlock.

It eventually came down to penalties, with Chelsea subbing in Arrizabalaga for the red-hot Mendy. This turned out to be a regrettable call, as the backup made zero saves in 11 chances.

When it became his chance to score, Kepa sailed it well over the bar to end his team's hopes.

It was one of many missed opportunities for Chelsea as Liverpool secured the EFL Cup.

Roman Abramovich Cedes Control of Chelsea After Russia's Invasion of Ukraine

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich announced Saturday he's handed over control of the Premier League club to trustees of its charitable foundation.

Abramovich, who purchased the Blues in 2003, released a statement about his decision:

During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club's best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea's charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
"I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans."

The 55-year-old Russian businessman, whom Forbes lists as having a $13.6 billion net worth after a career in the oil industry, didn't provide a reason for stepping aside.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported the Blues are not for sale and the owner's decision was made to "help and protect the club."

Ashley Lutz of Fortune reported Thursday there was mounting pressure to force Abramovich to sell the English side after Russia's military invasion of Ukraine because of his links to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

UK parliament member Chris Bryant raised questions Thursday about the Chelsea owner's business activity based on a 2019 government document about his "links to the Russian state and his public association with corrupt activity and practices," per Peter Walker of the Guardian.

Bryant said the document alleged Abramovich admitted in "court proceedings that he paid for political influence" and suggested that's enough to strip him of his Chelsea ownership.

"That's nearly three years ago. And yet remarkably little has been done," Bryant said. "Surely Mr. Abramovich should no longer be able to own a football club in this country? Surely we should be looking at seizing some of his assets, including his £150 million home, and making sure that other people who have had Tier 1 visas like this are not engaged in malign activity in the UK?"

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Tuesday that Abramovich was "already facing sanctions," but his spokesperson later confirmed Johnson "misspoke" when he made that remark, per BBC News.

The United Kingdom and the United States have issued sanctions against Putin and Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov following the attack on Ukraine, which is ongoing and moved into the capital city of Kyiv on Saturday, according to CNN

In October, Abramovich returned to the UK for the first time in three years after visa issues related to the country's crackdown on "powerful Russians," per Will Pugh of the Sun.

The charitable foundation leadership group that will take over Chelsea on an interim basis includes club chairman Bruce Buck, women's team manager Emma Hayes, John Devine, Piara Powar, Paul Ramos and Sir Hugh Robertson.

It's unclear how long the transfer of power is expected to last.

The Blues, who've won 18 trophies during Abramovich's tenure, are scheduled to face Liverpool in the EFL Cup final Sunday at Wembley Stadium in London.

Chelsea's Christian Pulisic 'Very, Very Close' to Return After Ankle Injury

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said Tuesday that winger Christian Pulisic has struggled to overcome lingering pain from an ankle injury suffered during a Sept. 8 appearance with the United States men's national team.

However, the German coach added Pulisic is "very, very close" to rejoining the squad.

"He got injured during a match with USA," Tuchel told reporters. "It was a tough foul and he hurt his ankle. There is nothing to worry [about] in terms of that we are hiding details or not telling you details. I cannot give you all the details because I am simply not a doctor."

Tuchel also confirmed Pulisic won't be available for the Blues' UEFA Champions League match against Malmo at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

"He is very impatient of course," Tuchel said. "He does everything and we can see him suffer in every meeting and every time we meet him here in our training center, he is really suffering. He wants to be on the pitch and help us. Everybody is doing their very best but unfortunately the injury takes its time."

Pulisic has only made two appearances for Chelsea during the early stages of the 2021-22 season. He helped the club beat Spanish side Villarreal in the UEFA Super Cup and then scored in the Blues' 3-0 win over Crystal Palace to open the Premier League term.

The 23-year-old Pennsylvania native was then sidelined after testing positive for COVID-19, however, and suffered the ankle injury upon his return to action with the USMNT.

He missed the latest round of World Cup qualifiers for the U.S., which included home wins over Jamaica and Costa Rica along with an away loss to Panama.

Pulisic's creativity in the attacking third was sorely missed by the Americans, who scored just four goals in the three matches.

While Tuchel is hopeful the playmaker can return in the near future, he noted the recovery process from ankle injuries can have a lot of stops and restarts.

"Once these players with these quick movements like Christian, once they feel this pain and are not free in the movement, the recovery is not happening so you start all over again," he told reporters. "You start all over again and reach a certain point and then the pain comes back and you have to do a little pause and start all over again."

U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter will hope Pulisic is back in action before the next international window in mid-November with the side set to host rival Mexico on Nov. 12 and visit Jamaica on Nov. 16.

Meanwhile, Chelsea sits atop the Premier League table with 19 points (6-1-1) through the first eight matches on the strength of a plus-13 goal differential (16-3).

So Pulisic will likely have to earn a role within the in-form squad once he's cleared to return.

Chelsea's Reece James Says Champions League, Euro Medals Were Stolen During Match

Chelsea right back Reece James is asking for help to identify a group of people who robbed a safe from his home during Tuesday night's Champions League match against Zenit Saint Petersburg at Stamford Bridge.

James, who played all 90 minutes in the Blues' 1-0 win, wrote on Instagram the safe contained his medals from the club's titles in the 2020-21 Champions League and the 2021 UEFA Super Cup, along with his runner-up medal from the England national team's trip to the Euro 2020 final this summer.

"These medals were won representing Chelsea and England—honours that can never be taken away from me whether or not I have the physical medals to prove it," James wrote. "Nevertheless, I am appealing to all my Chelsea and England fans to help identify and turn in these low life individuals who will never be able to rest easy as the evidence is mounting against them."

The 21-year-old rising star posted several videos with security footage from the home, which show at least five people pushing the safe out of the house and into a getaway car after forcing open the security fence.

James noted local police, Chelsea and his advisors have started looking into the situation and identified "firm leads on who the perpetrators are."

"We are closing in on them," he wrote. "Luckily, no one was present during the break in but I want to let all of you know I am safe and well. I really do appreciate having the platform to tell you all about my misfortune and I hope together we can catch these individuals and deliver justice where it is due."

Police haven't commented on the investigation.

Chelsea remain unbeaten so far during the 2021-22 season. After beating Villarreal on penalty kicks to win the UEFA Super Cup, the Blues have posted three wins and one draw in the Premier League and opened the UCL group stage with the victory over Zenit Saint Petersburg.

James has appeared in three of the Premier League fixtures along with starting Tuesday's Champions League triumph.

He's also become a consistent contributor for England at the international level, most recently playing 62 minutes in a 4-0 win over Andorra in World Cup qualifying on Sept. 5.

Chelsea returns to Premier League action Sunday when it travels for an away match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Christian Pulisic Ruled Out for USMNT's World Cup Qualifier vs. El Salvador

Chelsea star Christian Pulisic will not play for the United States men's national team in its World Cup qualifier against El Salvador on Thursday.

According to The Athletic, Pulisic did not travel to the Central American nation on Wednesday after he announced he tested positive for COVID-19 on Aug. 18.

The midfielder said at the time that he was fully vaccinated and experienced no symptoms associated with his diagnosis.

The Athletic noted that Pulisic isolated for 10 days, cleared protocols and trained with the USMNT on Monday and Tuesday, but the decision was still made to hold him out of Thursday's CONCACAF match.

While the 22-year-old is the USMNT's best player and represents a significant loss, his absence shouldn't have much of a bearing on the result in San Salvador.

The U.S. is ranked 10th in the world in the FIFA men's soccer rankings, while El Salvador is way down in 64th, which is seventh among the eight CONCACAF teams in qualifying.

The Americans have never lost a match to El Salvador and have won each of their past five meetings, including a 6-0 win in a friendly last December in Florida.

It is also notable that the USMNT has enjoyed some success without Pulisic and other top players recently. It won the Gold Cup last month, beating Mexico in the final with what was considered a B team.

Still, U.S. soccer fans are undoubtedly excited to see the dynamic Pulisic back in red, white and blue soon.

Pulisic has 16 goals in 38 career appearances for the senior national team, and he has starred at the club level as well at both Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.

The Pennsylvania native scored in his only EPL appearance so far this season and has totaled 37 goals across all competitions for the German and British powers.

Leaving Pulisic back in Tennessee to train could be the team's best bet in terms of ensuring he is good to go for the other upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

After Thursday's match against El Salvador, the Americans will host Canada on Sunday in Nashville and go back on the road to face Honduras next Wednesday.
