'The Best Fit of Players': What's Driving Unprecedented Boston Celtics Offense?

Celtics interim head coach, Joe Mazzulla (left), is running a historically great offense around Jayson Tatum (right).

Boston Celtics players have made no secret about their focus on getting back to the NBA Finals and taking what they see as the next logical step: winning it all.

Saturday night's game at Golden State—the team that defeated the Celtics in the 2022 Finals—will be a good litmus test to see if they can continue trending in that direction.

Dethroning the champion Warriors, or whoever emerges from the West, won't be easy. But Boston has improved its chances for success with a motion-filled, space-creating offense that is giving the rest of the league fits in this still-young season.

Here's what you need to know about this offense:

Jayson Tatum is a front-runner for league MVP in large part because he scores at a high level while making sure his teammates are major contributors, too. It is also fueled by a deeper-than-usual bench led by Malcolm Brogdon.

Above all else, interim head coach Joe Mazzulla has put his imprint on what they do, tapping into his multisport background and placing an increased emphasis on space, which have both opened the floor and also created opportunities to build off last season's success as they head into their Finals rematch against the Warriors.

The Foundation

Spacing. Spacing. Spacing.

Mazzulla is a man of many interests, one of which includes soccer. As a high school standout in fútbol and a lifelong fan of the game, he has a tremendous appreciation for the sport's emphasis on ball movement and crisp passing designed to create better opportunities to score.

And we're seeing that appreciation manifest itself on a regular basis with the Celtics.

"Spacing is really important to what we do, in everything we do," Boston's Derrick White told Bleacher Report earlier this season. "It's definitely something that's emphasized a lot this season."

It's no surprise that prioritizing this facet of the game would create a better-looking offense, which was middle-of-the-pack most of last season. But what the Celtics have done with Mazzulla running the show goes far beyond your run-of-the-mill upgrade.

Boston's improved spacing has been the foundation for what has been perhaps the most efficient offense in NBA history.

The Celtics' effective field goal percentage is 58.9, which would better the current NBA record of 57.5 set by the Brooklyn Nets during the 2020-21 season. Boston also has a true shooting percentage of 62.6, slightly better than the NBA record (61.0) set by the 2021 Nets club.

Boston also remains within striking distance of a new NBA record for three-pointers made per game. They average 16.6 per game, just behind the NBA record of 16.7 set by the Utah Jazz in 2021.

So if their explosive offense is all about spacing, which every team in the league talks about, why aren't other teams enjoying unprecedented success?

"The players," an Eastern Conference scout told Bleacher Report. "It's not that they have the best players in the NBA, per se. But they do have the best fit of players in the game right now."

The Brogdon Factor

The Boston Celtics knew they were getting a good player—albeit an injury-riddled one in recent years—when they acquired Brogdon this past summer. The veteran guard was the centerpiece of a six-player trade that sent Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stauskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick to Indiana.

Brogdon and his 14.0 points per game off the bench have helped, but his ability to attack defenses off the dribble has been a key factor in Boston's offensive ascension. He leads the team with 11.2 drives per game, along with 5.3 passes and 1.6 assists when going to the basket, which are also tops on the roster.

But it's what Brogdon and his teammates aren't doing that has allowed Boston to score like the basket is their own ocean, and we all got a beachfront property to watch the show.

Boston has kept its turnovers per game relatively the same despite the league average jump from 13.8 per game to 14.9 this year.

When it comes to drives, Boston only gives the ball up 2.6 times per game for a turnover rate of 5.5 percent, which ranks third and first in the NBA, respectively. That's also a notable improvement compared to last season when they ranked 20th in the league in both categories (3.2, 7.0 percent).

"My job is to really do whatever I have to do to help us when I'm out there," Brogdon told Bleacher Report. "Sometimes it's to score; sometimes it's to pass. But it's always about making the right basketball decision which is my focus."

That factors into the team's spacing, creating plenty of open or lightly contested shot attempts. And the Celtics, more often than not this season, have been able to capitalize.

Boston has taken 564 field-goal attempts this season with shooters having at least six feet of space, which ranks fifth in the NBA. Only Denver (48.8 percent) has converted a higher rate of wide-open opportunities than Boston (46.6) this season.

Having so many open looks is a far cry from where the Celtics offense was last season when they ranked 20th in total open field-goal attempts with at least six feet of space between the shooter and defender. Boston's 41.7 field goal percentage when taking those shots ranked 17th in the league.

Tatum's MVP Emergence

No Celtic has benefited from the team's improved spacing more than Tatum. The 24-year-old three-time All-Star is on the short list of MVP candidates thus far this season, and while the individual stats tell the tale (30.5 points per game), his league-best plus/minus of plus-245 reveals his impact beyond the box score.

Teammates have long been impressed with Tatum's skills. But this season, they have noticed a more vocal, locked-in leader.

"He's just so talented," said Marcus Smart. "He's figuring out how best to help this team, how to lead. He's a little more vocal now, which is good for us."

You'll often find him directing players to certain spots to stress defenses. It'll likely lead to an easy score for himself. Or it may wind up being one of the career-high 4.4 assists per game he's averaging on the year.

And then there's the Tatum fans never see in practice, often a voice of encouragement to his teammates.

Derrick White, for instance, has been among the biggest revelations for the Celtics this season. His shooting has taken a major step in the right direction. After hitting 34.0 percent of his three-point attempts over the first five years of his career, White is knocking down 42.7 percent of his deep shots.

The improved marksmanship was aided by extra time this past summer working on shot mechanics. But White has also benefited from having Tatum in his ear, repeatedly telling him to keep firing when teams are willing to give up perimeter shots.

"It's great when your best scorer is telling you you need to shoot more," said White, whose plus/minus of plus-188 is second only to Tatum in the NBA this season. "He's at a point where he can do that and knows that the ball is going to come back to him, and he'll still be able to score like he's used to."

In doing so, Tatum is the face of not only the franchise but also one of the most efficient offenses in league history.

This has been a major factor in the Celtics looking like front-runners to bring home what would be an NBA-record 18th championship by next June.

Warriors' Steve Kerr: Celtics Have Been 'By Far the Best Team in the League'

The Boston Celtics have put their loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals behind them and are fully focused on lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy in 2023.

That loss still stings, but the Celtics have shown much improvement since being defeated in the Finals, and they will get the opportunity to show the Warriors what they're made of when they match up for the first time this season on Saturday.

Golden State isn't taking Boston lightly, either, with head coach Steve Kerr telling reporters Friday that the Celtics, led by the duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, have undeniably been the best team in the league this year.

"I'm sure the motivation from last year is there and is driving them," Kerr said. "They've been, by far, the best team in the league."

In last season's Finals, the Celtics fell to the Warriors in six games and saw their offense sputter. Boston averaged 100.8 points against Golden State, down from the 105.0 points they averaged in the Eastern Conference Finals and the 111.8 from the regular season.

Reeling from that loss, the Celtics have turned their disappointment into meaningful success this season, and they're reaping the benefits.

While Boston's defense hasn't been nearly as good, the team currently has the best offense in the NBA with a 119.9 offensive rating. The next-closest team is the Phoenix Suns, which have a 116.3 offensive rating.

The Celtics have also greatly improve their shooting. Last season, they shot 46.6 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from deep. This year, they're shooting 49.3 percent from the field and a league-best 40 percent from beyond the arc.

The meteoric rises of both Tatum and Brown have certainly contributed to Boston's offensive success, but the addition of Malcolm Brogdon and the improvement of players like Grant Williams have helped propel the C's this year.

Beyond shooting, the Celtics have also improved their spacing and off-ball movement. Additionally, they're committing far fewer turnovers this year, averaging just 13.8 turnovers, which is the sixth-best mark in the NBA.

A lot of the team's success can be attributed to interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, who appears to have taken this team to its potential.

The Celtics enter Saturday's game against the 13-13 Warriors with a 21-5 record, and they'll be looking to capture one of their biggest wins of the season.

JJ Redick Says He Previously Spoke to Joe Mazzulla About Joining Celtics Staff

JJ Redick has made a name for himself in the broadcasting world, but the former NBA sharpshooter was at least under consideration to join the coaching staff of the league's best team.

While talking to Boston Celtics guard Derrick White on The Old Man and the Three podcast (h/t Souichi Terada of MassLive.com), Redick said he spoke with Joe Mazzulla about joining his staff during the offseason.

"One thing leads to another, Sunday morning of that weekend, I'm playing golf with Joe, talking about joining your staff," Redick said. "I was just so impressed by him. I spent four-and-a-half hours with him."

The discussion occurred not long after Mazzulla was named Boston's interim head coach on Sept. 23. Mazzulla replaced Ime Udoka, who was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season by the team for a violation of club policies.

Despite the abrupt change at head coach right before the start of the regular season, the Celtics haven't skipped a beat. They lead the league in points per game (120.8), offensive rating (120.6) and net rating (plus-8.8).

The Celtics' current scoring average is on pace to be the highest in a single season since the 1983-84 Denver Nuggets (123.7).

This is Mazzulla's first stint as a head coach in the NBA. His only previous experience as a head coach was at Fairmont State from 2017-19. The 34-year-old left the Fighting Falcons to join the Celtics as an assistant coach before the 2019-20 season.

Boston is currently the only team in the league with at least 20 wins. Its 21-5 overall record is two games better than the No. 2 club (Milwaukee Bucks, 18-6).

Even though Redick declined the chance to move into coaching, it's unlikely he regrets the decision. The 38-year-old has been hosting his podcast since 2016, launched a media company in 2020 and was hired as an analyst for ESPN in 2021.

Celtics' Jaylen Brown Proves He 'Can Play with the Best of Them' in Win vs. Nets

Jaylen Brown has quietly been one of the best players in the NBA this season. He got loud on Sunday.

Brown scored a game-high 34 points against the Brooklyn Nets, leading the Boston Celtics to a 103-92 win. He added 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and a career-high four blocks in the victory. He also didn't turn the ball over once.

After the game, Brown said he likes to remind people he's one of the NBA's elite players:

He didn't waste any time dropping the hammer on Brooklyn, putting up 20 points in the first quarter alone as Boston raced out to a 35-27 lead and never looked back.

So unsurprisingly, NBA Twitter was buzzing after the performance:

https://twitter.com/Dart_Adams/status/1599575750209728512

Brown wasn't alone in his efforts, as his running mate Jayson Tatum put up 29 points, 11 boards and four steals. The pair combined to shoot 20-of-39 from the field, while the Celtics shot a solid 15-of-38 overall from beyond the arc.

Kevin Durant tried to keep Brooklyn in the game, finishing with 31 points. He didn't have much help, however, as Kyrie Irving struggled (18 points, 7-of-21 from the field) and the team's bench was outscored 24-15 by Boston's reserves.

For the 18-5 Celtics, it was yet another conquest in a season full of them, as they remain atop the Eastern Conference. For the 13-11 Nets, it was yet another disappointing display, albeit one without the injured Ben Simmons.

And for Brown, it was yet another reminder that he's climbing steadily closer to the ranks of the superstars. Well, if he isn't there already, that is.

Al Horford Discusses New Celtics Contract, Says Boston's Stability Is 'Hard to Find'

Al Horford agreed to a two-year, $20 million extension with the Boston Celtics on Thursday, and before Friday's matchup against the Miami Heat, the veteran big man told reporters he had no interest in departing the franchise for a second time.

Horford said, via ESPN's Tim Bontemps:

"For me, I really did want to be a part of what we have going here. I felt like me coming back here last year, I felt the strides the group started to make and we've continued to make strides in the right direction.

"I feel like there's a real purpose of trying to win and the group that we have is just a really good group. So, I'm happy and we know we have a lot of work ahead. But this type of stability, it's hard to find."

Horford added:

"One of the things is, more than anything, you want to be in a place where you have a chance to contend, to win. A place that's, for me, more than basketball. Boston, I feel a real connection here with the people and with what the Celtics are all about, and it's something that just really excited me. And the fact that I get that opportunity and Brad believing in me and bringing me here, it's something that's special, and I'm really grateful for the opportunity."

Horford played for the Celtics from 2016-2019 before agreeing to a four-year, $109 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Following a disappointing season with the Sixers, he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he spent the 2020-21 campaign and missed out on the playoffs for the first time in his career.

In his first stint with the Celtics, Horford averaged 13.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.6 assists and 1.2 blocks in 208 games across three seasons. He shot 49.8 percent from the floor and 38.2 percent from deep.

The Celtics made the Eastern Conference Finals in two of Horford's first three seasons. In his lone season with the 76ers, Philly was swept in the first round of the playoffs by Boston, which went on to the conference finals for the third time in four seasons.

The Celtics brought Horford back before the 2021-22 campaign in a deal that sent veteran point guard Kemba Walker to the Thunder. The move was Brad Stevens' first as Boston's president of basketball operations, a role he was promoted to following Danny Ainge's departure.

The trade proved to be exceptional as Horford thrived in his first season back in Boston, averaging 10.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.3 blocks in 69 games while shooting 46.7 percent from the floor and 33.6 percent from deep.

The 36-year-old was even better in the playoffs, averaging 12 points, 9.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 blocks in 23 games while shooting 52.3 percent from the floor and 48 percent from deep. The Celtics went on to reach the NBA Finals, where they fell to the Golden State Warriors in six games.

Horford is in the midst of another impressive season with the C's, averaging 10.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 18 games while shooting 55.5 percent from the floor and 48.8 percent from deep.

The five-time All-Star has been an anchor for Boston at the five with Robert Williams III recovering from left knee surgery, and he'll undoubtedly be a significant factor for the Celtics in the postseason, provided they get there.

The Celtics are first in the Eastern Conference with an 18-4 record entering Friday's game against the Heat. They haven't lost a game since Nov. 21 against the Chicago Bulls.

Nia Long Says 'No One' from Celtics Contacted Her After Ime Udoka Suspension

Ime Udoka's fiancée, actress Nia Long, is speaking out about his suspension from the Boston Celtics in September and how it has impacted their family since the news was made public just a few months ago.

In a recent interview with Brande Victorian of The Hollywood Reporter, Long slammed the Celtics organization for not reaching out to her following the news that Udoka had been suspended for "multiple violations of team policies."

Long told Victorian:

“I think the most heartbreaking thing about all of this was seeing my son’s face when the Boston Celtics organization decided to make a very private situation public. It was devastating, and it still is. He still has moments where it’s not easy for him. If you’re in the business of protecting women — I’m sorry, no one from the Celtics organization has even called to see if I’m OK, to see if my children are OK. It’s very disappointing.”

The Celtics announced on Sept. 22 that Udoka had been suspended for the entire 2022-23 season, citing violations of team policies. The organization added that a determination regarding his future with the franchise would be made "at a later date."

While the Celtics did not state what the violations were, The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania reported the 45-year-old allegedly had an "improper and consensual relationship" with a female staffer.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski added on Sept. 30 that the independent investigation into Udoka's relationship with the staff member revealed he "used crude language in his dialogue with a female subordinate prior to the start of an improper workplace relationship with the woman."

Long and Udoka began dating in 2009, got engaged in 2015 and have an 11-year-old son who they are currently "co-parenting," per Victorian. Long did not discuss the status of their relationship or Udoka's actions that led to the suspension.

Udoka is unlikely to return as head coach of the Celtics in 2023-24. Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe reported in November that the Celtics are "fully invested" in interim head coach Joe Mazzulla.

The Celtics hired Udoka ahead of the 2021-22 campaign after former president of basketball operations Danny Ainge parted ways with the organization and Brad Stevens was elevated from head coach to the team's lead front office position.

Boston went on to have a magical season, finishing first in the Eastern Conference with a 51-31 record and making a run to the NBA Finals, where it fell to the Golden State Warriors in six games.

However, Mazzulla's Celtics have been just as good, if not better in 2022-23.

The C's are first in the East with an 18-4 record, and they have the NBA's best offensive rating at 121.5. Led by Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, Boston looks like it could make another run to the finals this season.

It only seems like a matter of time before interim is removed from Mazzulla's job title.

Jayson Tatum Championed as MVP Front-Runner by NBA Twitter in Win vs. Heat

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum solidified himself in the early conversation for NBA MVP with a dominant performance on Wednesday against the Miami Heat.

Tatum poured in 49 points with 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals to lead the Celtics to a 134-121 win at TD Garden. The 24-year-old shot 15-of-25 from the field and 8-of-12 from beyond the arc as Boston improved to 18-4.

Wednesday's performance was Tatum's fourth straight outing with at least 30 points. With the Duke product leading the way, the Celtics are the hottest team in the league with wins in 14 out of their last 15 games.

NBA Twitter was blown away by Tatum's dominance against Miami, with many declaring him the front runner for MVP:

https://twitter.com/casualtakeking/status/1598138023979651072
https://twitter.com/vioIent/status/1598145691028951041

Tatum had help on Wednesday, as Jaylen Brown added 26 points and Malcolm Brogdon scored 21 points off the bench. Boston was incredibly efficient, shooting 55.4 percent from the field and 48.9 percent from three-point range.

The Celtics look extra motivated to avenge last season's loss in the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. If Tatum continues playing like this, it won't be a surprise to see Boston make another deep playoff run this year.

Tatum and the Celtics will look to stay hot with another matchup against the Heat on Friday.
