Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers Rally to Beat Josh Allen, Bills in Week 1 Clash

Sep 12, 2021

The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their 2021 season with a key conference win, earning a 23-16 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Down 10-0 at halftime, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers found more success in the second half to earn a come-from-behind road win at Highmark Stadium. The Pittsburgh defense was especially impressive, holding last year's No. 2 scoring offense to just six points in the second half.

Pittsburgh's special teams did their part as well with a blocked punt returned for a touchdown that extended the lead in the fourth quarter:

Buffalo had a pair of field-goal drives down the stretch, but it wasn't enough to pull out the win.

Josh Allen was held to just one passing touchdown as the Bills struggled offensively. It's an early setback for a team considered a top Super Bowl contender entering the season.

Notable Performances

Josh Allen, QB, BUF: 30-51, 270 passing yards, 1 TD, 44 rushing yards

Devin Singletary, RB, BUF: 11 carries, 72 rushing yards

Stefon Diggs, WR, BUF: 9 catches, 69 receiving yards

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, PIT: 18-32, 188 passing yards, 1 TD

Najee Harris, RB, PIT: 16 carries, 45 rushing yards

Chase Claypool, WR, PIT: 3 catches, 45 receiving yards, 25 rushing yards

Josh Allen Can't Generate Enough Offense

There wasn't much room for the Bills to operate, with the Steelers defense playing well at all three levels. Cameron Sutton held his own against Stefon Diggs, while T.J. Watt was showing why he earned a huge extension before the start of the season.

Allen finally came through with a touchdown pass to Gabriel Davis just before halftime:

It still wasn't easy to move the football as Allen struggled with efficiency, finishing with just 5.3 yards per pass attempt.

The Bills then further hurt their cause by turning it over on downs in each of the first two drives of the second half. Those plays represented significant turning points in the game.

The second fourth-down stop was a strangely designed play to Matt Breida that lost seven yards on 4th-and-1.

The next drive ended even worse for the Bills as the Steelers blocked a punt and ran it back for a touchdown.

Buffalo easily finished with more offensive yards in the game (371-251), but these types of key plays made a huge difference in a low-scoring battle. With just one touchdown on four red-zone trips, the final result is understandable.

Allen will need to clean things up in future games for the Bills to reach their lofty goals this season.

Steelers Overcome Slow Start for Big Win

The Steelers had to have been embarrassed by their offensive showing in the first half Sunday.

Not only were the visitors held scoreless, they finished with just 54 yards of offense with three first downs and five punts.

The offensive line was an issue as many predicted entering the season.

There was finally some ball movement in the second half, with Chase Claypool providing a significant boost to the offense:

Claypool also drew a key pass interference before the team's first touchdown.

Diontae Johnson finished the drive with an impressive catch in the end zone.

That was the only offensive touchdown for Pittsburgh, but it was all the Steelers needed as the defense and special teams took care of business.

The Steelers have a lot of offensive firepower between Johnson, Claypool, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Najee Harris, each of whom had quality moments in the game. Even without much consistency, a few good plays from each could be enough for the Steelers to squeeze out wins this season.

What's Next?

The Steelers will have their first home game in Week 2 against the Las Vegas Raiders. The Bills will go on the road next week for a divisional battle against the Miami Dolphins.

Josh Allen Receiving More Bets to Win 2021 NFL MVP Than Favorites Mahomes, Rodgers

Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen may not be the favorite to win the NFL's MVP in 2021, but he's drawing the most betting attention ahead of the regular season.

ESPN's David Purdum reported Allen "has attracted more bets to win the Associated Press MVP award than any other player at multiple sportsbooks." At BetMGM's sportsbooks, his volume of bets is almost twice as much as Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Allen at 12-1 to be MVP behind Mahomes (5-1) and reigning winner Aaron Rodgers (10-1).

Peyton Manning was the last player to win back-to-back MVPs, doing so in 2008 and 2009. Jim Brown, Joe Montana and Brett Favre are the only other players to pull off the feat.

History isn't on Rodgers' side in his pursuit of a fourth MVP.

Mahomes is arguably the best pure passer in the NFL. Within an MVP context, his candidacy might be docked slightly by the fact that his supporting cast includes Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.

Allen enjoyed a breakthrough third season, throwing for 4,544 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2020. He also ran for 421 yards and eight scores.

Thanks in part to Allen's ascendance, the Bills won 13 games and claimed their first AFC East title since 1995 en route to reaching the AFC Championship Game.

Bettors aren't the only ones who like the 25-year-old's odds of winning the NFL's top individual honor. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently polled a group of executives, scouts and coaches, with Allen emerging as the MVP favorite.

On paper, the Buffalo Bills have one of the most complete rosters in the NFL . Buffalo is poised to make a push back to the AFC Championship Game and challenge the Kansas City Chiefs for the top spot in the conference...

NFL Rumors: 'Sneaky' Buzz Around Bills' Josh Allen to Win 2021 NFL MVP Award by Execs

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen finished second in NFL MVP voting last year, and it's garnered him more respect from executives around the league heading into the 2021 season.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday on SportsCenter that Allen's dual-threat ability has made him a popular MVP prediction among execs ahead of next week's season-opening home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Highmark Stadium:

There's some sneaky MVP buzz around Josh Allen right now because I've informally polled some execs around the league about who they think is going to win the award. Allen's name has come up a lot because this is a guy who's in a great offense, a team in contention. I'm hearing Allen has been a lot better at mastering the nuances of the game, the pre-snap protections, all those things you need to win at the quarterback position. And he's going to have the ball in his hands more than Luka Doncic. This is a guy that they're either going to pass or run, probably more than 700 times or around there this year. So, he's set up to potentially win it. I'm sure Patrick Mahomes and those gentlemen will have something to say about that, though.

Buffalo's selection of Allen with the seventh overall pick in the 2018 draft was widely chastised, and it initially appeared the critics may have been right.

The University of Wyoming product struggled as a rookie with nearly as many turnovers (14) as touchdowns (18) while completing just 52.8 percent of his throws across 12 games.

Allen made steady progress in 2019 and then took his game to an elite level in 2020.

Last year, he posted a 69.2 percent completion rate—a 10.4 percent single-season increase—along with 45 total touchdowns (37 passing and eight rushing) while guiding the Bills to a 13-3 record for their first division title since 1995. He ranked third in ESPN's Total QBR behind only the Green Bay Packers' Aaron Rodgers, who won the MVP Award, and Mahomes.

Allen and the Bills ultimately advanced to the AFC Championship Game before getting eliminated from the playoffs by Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Buffalo rewarded the 25-year-old California native for his breakout season with a six-year, $258 million contract extension that runs through 2028.

"At the end of the day, it's still a lot of money. As someone alluded to earlier, it's generational wealth and something to be super proud of," Allen told reporters after signing the deal in early August. "The ultimate goal for now is winning, and it's not going to matter if we don't win."

Buffalo's championship window is open for the first time since the '90s, and its ability to potentially chase down the first Super Bowl title in franchise history is directly tied to Allen continuing the play at the MVP level he started to reach last year.

Neither the 2020 Pro Bowl selection nor the Bills as a whole are going to catch anybody off guard in 2021, though. They're now among the hunted in a top-heavy AFC that also counts the Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns as legitimate contenders.

Allen and Co. do have a chance to start strong with three home games over the first four weeks, starting next Sunday against the Steelers.

Video: 11-Year-Old Bills Fan Jumps Through Cardboard Table After Completing Chemo

An 11-year-old Buffalo Bills fan from Syracuse, New York, celebrated the completion of his chemotherapy this week by jumping through a makeshift table.

Joshy Hutchison, wearing a Josh Allen jersey and Bills helmet, smashed through a table constructed of cardboard before ringing the bell to signify the conclusion of his cancer treatment:

Joshy's grandmother, Karen Hutchison, told 7 Eyewitness News in Buffalo that he now wants to attend a Bills game and meet Allen.

That may be a possibility after the Bills' superstar quarterback reacted to Joshy's video:

Joshy's celebratory dive through the table was inspired by Bills Mafia, which is the nickname for the Bills fanbase.

For several years, many Bills fans have jumped through wooden folding tables at tailgate parties outside Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

The end of Joshy's chemotherapy comes shortly before the start of the 2021 NFL regular season.

Buffalo will open its season at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 12, and it is widely expected to be a top Super Bowl contender after reaching the AFC Championship Game last season.

Bills Won't Renew Buffalo Lease in 2023 Without New Stadium Agreement

The Bills' long-term future in Buffalo looks murky, with their current stadium lease agreement set to expire in July 2023.

Ron Raccuia, Pegula Sports and Entertainment senior vice president, told WBEN-Radio (h/t the Associated Press) the Bills "absolutely will not" renew their lease with the state of New York and Erie county if there is no agreement in place for a new stadium.

Raccuia's comments came after John Wawrow of the Associated Press reported last month that the Bills proposed building a new $1.4 billion stadium across the street from their current facilities.

Wawrow followed up on Tuesday, noting the stadium would include 60,000 seats and 60 suites "with a completion date pegged for no later than 2027 based on how quickly a deal can be struck."

According to Wawrow, the proposal's two primary topics of debate are how quickly a deal could be approved and how the cost would be split between taxpayers and Bills ownership.

Per Tim Graham of The Athletic, the Bills likely couldn't renovate their current stadium because the "structural integrity of Highmark Stadium doesn’t allow" it.

"Rather than dump $400 million into Highmark Stadium for the pleasure of processing additional repair bills, the preference is to spend about three times that for a brand new, open-air ballpark," Graham wrote.

Raccuia also noted the Bills are not "yet" focused on potential relocation options.

"We're just committed to getting everybody together as quickly as possible to get to a solution," he said. "Talking about options and 'what happens if,' that serves no purpose. It's not where any of our focus or resources are being dedicated."

Pegula Sports and Entertainment has owned the Bills since 2014 when Kim and Terry Pegula purchased the franchise after Ralph Wilson died in March 2014.

Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, has been the Bills' home stadium since 1973. It's currently the fourth-oldest stadium in the NFL, ahead of Soldier Field (1924), Lambeau Field (1957) and Arrowhead Stadium (1972).

The Bills began play in Buffalo during the 1960 season as a charter member of the American Football League.

A group of professional divers recovered Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver's diamond necklace from the bottom of Lake Erie.

TMZ Sports shared the story, which was relayed by Oliver's neighbors. They said that the chain "popped right off his neck" while he was boating Saturday. Eventually, the neighbors contacted Discover Diving WNY, leading to the finding.

Dan Fetes of 13WHAM relayed a Facebook post from Oliver's neighbor along with a picture of the diver wearing the chain, which features the 23-year-old's number (91).

That image, per TMZ Sports, also shows Oliver shouting out the diving group, calling them the "real deal."

Oliver started all 16 games for the AFC champions last year, amassing 33 tackles, three sacks and six quarterback hits. He's entering his third NFL campaign after Buffalo selected him out of the University of Houston with the ninth overall pick in the 2019 draft.

Isaiah McKenzie Gets COVID-19 Vaccine After Being Fined by NFL for Mask Violation

Buffalo Bills wide receiver and return man Isaiah McKenzie received a COVID-19 vaccination Saturday, just days after getting fined by the NFL for not wearing a mask at the team facility.

McKenzie posted a photo of himself on his Instagram story holding up a vaccination card along with the caption "For the greater good."

On Thursday, McKenzie tweeted a photo of a letter from the NFL that indicated he had been fined for not wearing a mask in the field house and training room and a meeting area:

McKenzie later tweeted that he had been fined $14,650.

McKenzie's teammate and fellow wide receiver Cole Beasley tweeted Thursday that he had also been fined by the NFL for not wearing a mask:

https://twitter.com/Bease11/status/1430882855522082820

Beasley has been outspoken in his opposition to the COVID-19 vaccine throughout the offseason.

While the numbers aren't publicly known, the Bills may have among the lowest vaccination rates in the NFL.

Per Jay Skurski of the Buffalo News, Bills general manager Brandon Beane said this week that around 80 percent of the team's players were vaccinated.

Skurski noted that a Washington Post report put the leaguewide vaccination rate among players at 92.7 percent with only four teams below 89 percent.

It appears Buffalo is one of them, which could turn out to be a significant issue. The Bills have Super Bowl aspirations after going 13-3 and reaching the AFC Championship Game last season behind quarterback and NFL MVP runner-up Josh Allen.

The 26-year-old McKenzie is likely fifth on the wide receiver depth chart, but he is a useful gadget player in the offense, and he set career highs last season with 30 receptions for 282 yards and five touchdowns. He also returned a punt for a touchdown for the first time in his career.

With three-time Pro Bowl returner Andre Roberts having left the Bills for the Houston Texans in free agency, McKenzie is in the mix to fill that role in 2021.

He is primarily competing with rookie sixth-round pick Marquez Stevenson, who has returned a punt for a touchdown during the preseason.

McKenzie suffered a shoulder injury Tuesday in practice. The timeline for his return to action remains unclear.

Regardless, he seems like a safe bet to make the team based on what he contributes on offense and special teams.

Bills' Isaiah McKenzie Posts NFL's Letter for Fine After Violating COVID-19 Protocols

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie shared the letter he received from the NFL upon getting fined for violating the league's COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

The NFL told McKenzie he wasn't wearing a mask on two occasions while walking through the Bills facilities:

Bills wideout Cole Beasley indicated he was fined as well:

https://twitter.com/Bease11/status/1430882855522082820

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has stated masks are for the protection of others rather than the wearer. While masks provide some level of protection to the person wearing them, the extent of the protection they provide is still being studied.

The NFL told McKenzie he had been warned in July that "future violations of the protocols will result in increased discipline, including for conduct detrimental." NFL Network's Tom Pelissero noted the increased punishment includes a fine of up to one week's salary and a four-game unpaid suspension.

The NFL and NFL Players Association rolled out their new COVID-19 policy for training camp and the preseason in July.

The guidelines provide wider latitude for players and staffers who have been fully vaccinated. Those who haven't been vaccinated are still subject to requirements regarding masking, physical distancing and their travel.

Unvaccinated players and staff members also have to quarantine when exposed to somebody carrying COVID-19. Beasley, Gabriel Davis, Star Lotulelei and Vernon Butler were ordered to sit out practice for five days after having close contact with with a Bills trainer who tested positive for the virus.

Beasley has been outspoken in his desire to remain unvaccinated. He wrote in June that he "may die of covid, but I'd rather die actually living."

On Monday, the United States' Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine after previously sanctioning it and a number of others for emergency use during the pandemic.

In July, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell issued a memo laying out how teams that experience an outbreak among unvaccinated players may have to forfeit games that cannot be rescheduled. Players from both teams would also lose their game checks for any forfeited matchup.

The Bills open the regular season Sept. 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
