Mississippi State's Mike Leach Doubts Texas Spent $280K on Arch Manning Visit

Mike Leach is casting doubts on reports of Texas spending $280,000 on a recruiting trip highlighted by quarterback Arch Manning.

“Have you ever been to or heard of rooms that can eat up that much of $280,000? I haven’t,” Leach said Thursday on his weekly radio show, per Stefan Krajisnik of the Mississippi Clarion Ledger. “Let’s make them really expensive. There’s eight recruits, hypothetically. Let’s make those rooms $3,000 a piece. Right there you still haven’t even dented it.”

“I think this is embellished. … But I would be curious if someone managed to be creative enough to find a way to spend that much money in that period of time on that number of people. I’d be curious exactly how it was done and what they did. I have some serious, serious, serious doubts about this.”

Leach said he read the article in The Athletic that highlighted the expensive recruiting visit, which featured eight high-level prospects and their families.

If Leach read the article, however, it's hard to see why he would have trouble believing the amount spent. Texas did not send out a press release bragging about spending over a quarter-million dollars on the trip; reporter Sam Khan Jr. obtained receipts and invoices via a public records request.

The amount spent would be verified by those receipts.

The report also details exactly how the money was spent, including comments from parents of the recruits who were on the trip. Texas laid out a 5-star red carpet for top recruits, and all parties took full advantage of the open checkbook.

This all seems like a pretty cut-and-dried situation.

4-Star WR Prospect Hykeem Williams Commits to FSU over Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M

Sep 23, 2022

Hykeem Williams, a 4-star wide receiver out of Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has decided to play college football at Florida State.

Williams announced his decision Friday, picking the Seminoles over other finalists, including Miami, Georgia, Alabama and Texas A&M.

The 6'3", 200-pound Williams is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 26 overall prospect in the class of 2023. He is also the No. 5 wideout in the country and No. 6 overall prospect in Florida.

Williams received 35 offers and made visits to Florida State, Georgia and Pitt. 247Sports also listed Williams as having an interest in Texas A&M as well. Other schools that offered include Alabama, Auburn and Michigan.

Williams had 40 catches for 750 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2021. He also stars on the basketball court and averaged a double-double during his junior year.

Andrew Ivins of 247Sports provided a scouting report for Williams and compared him to Chicago Bears wide receiver N'Keal Harry, a former first-round pick:

"Figures to eventually emerge as an impact player at the Power 5 level given rare movement patterns and competitive drive (has been utilized throughout prep career as a pass rusher when needed). Will likely need some time to get adjusted to the everyday demands of the college game but should be viewed as a potential go-to target in a modern pro-style spread attack. NFL upside."

Williams has the potential to be a college superstar, especially given his size and ability to provide a big target for quarterbacks. A lengthy and productive NFL career certainly isn't out of the question, either, but for now, Williams looks ready to tear up college fields soon enough.

Opting to stay close to home, Williams has given Florida State's 2023 class a big boost. The Seminoles came into the day with the No. 19 recruiting class in the nation, per 247Sports composite rankings.

Head coach Mike Norvell hasn't brought Florida State up to the level of the nation's elite programs in recruiting, but his classes over the previous three seasons have been solid.

Since taking over the program in December 2019, Norvell has had the Seminoles ranked in the top 25 recruiting classes every year. The 2022 class was his highest-ranked thus far at No. 20 overall.

The results look to be paying off this season. Florida State is off to a 3-0 start for the first time since 2015, highlighted by a dramatic 24-23 win over LSU on Sept. 4.

Adding a playmaker with the potential that Williams boasts has the potential to open things up for the Seminoles offense starting next season.

Jordan Renaud Commits to Alabama over Oklahoma; Ranked No. 7 DL in Nation

Sep 19, 2022

Alabama added another top prospect to its 2023 recruiting class, with defensive lineman Jordan Renaud announcing his commitment Monday, per Hank South of 247Sports.

Renaud was also considering Oklahoma and had offers from Georgia and Auburn, among other top teams, but Alabama stood out in his recruitment:

Let me just be for real. I feel like me personally, I picked Bama because it’s going to stretch me to the max. Like, I don’t want anything to be handed to me. I feel like they get the best out of their players. I feel like a lot of people just see the glitz and the glamour of Bama being Alabama. But they’re grinding in the dark and in the mud at night when the lights are off and doing it like that. But when showtime Saturday comes, they’re diamonds, they’re gold. With them staying down and keeping their heads down, just grinding, by the time they get on TV and they come through and they say their 'Roll Tides,' it changes the energy and the demeanor. That’s why — because they work. I chose Bama because they work. That culture and that culture of competition attracted me to that.

The Texas native is the seventh-ranked defensive lineman and No. 69 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.

The commitment adds to the Crimson Tide's No. 1 recruiting class, which now features nine of the top 100 players in the rankings.

Alabama consistently has one of the best teams in college football under head coach Nick Saban, winning six championships in the last 13 seasons. Stocking up on defensive line talent will help the squad remain dominant in the always-competitive SEC.

The Crimson Tide have also helped numerous players reach the NFL, especially on the defensive line with recent stars like Quinnen Williams and Jonathan Allen. Since 2016, nine different Alabama defensive linemen have been drafted in the first two rounds.

Renaud could be among the next in line if he lives up to expectations with his new team.

The Notre Dame football team lost a key member of its 2023 recruiting class on Wednesday.

Five-star edge-rusher Keon Keeley announced on Twitter that he has decommitted from the Fighting Irish, signaling a reopening of his recruitment.

Keeley is listed as the No. 1 edge and No. 7 overall player in 247Sports' composite rankings. He had originally committed to Notre Dame in June 2021.

A 6'6", 242-pound recruit out of Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida, Keeley is sure to garner interest from other programs. 247Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins describes Keeley as "a larger-framed pass-rusher that's best football still appears to be well ahead of him" and added the youngster "has what it takes to eventually emerge as an impact player for a College Football Playoff contender and a possible Day 1 selection in the NFL draft."

As a junior in 2021, Keeley recorded 65 tackles (35 for loss), 16.5 sacks and 22 quarterback hits in 13 games. He helped lead Berkley Prep to district and regional titles as well as an appearance in Florida’s 3A state title game.

Per ESPN's Tom VanHaaren, Keeley had taken a visit to Alabama in July and he "previously entertained offers" from Ohio State and Florida, which he visited in March.

Even after Keeley's decommitment, 247Sports ranks Notre Dame's 2023 recruiting class third in the nation. The class is headlined by 5-star safety Peyton Bowen. He will also be joined by No. 4 offensive tackle Charles Jagusah and No. 6 linebacker Drayk Bowen.

5-Star LB Anthony Hill Commits to Texas A&M Over Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma, USC

Jul 30, 2022

Texas A&M gained a significant boost to its 2023 recruiting class Saturday when it received a commitment from 5-star linebacker Anthony Hill Jr.

The Athletic reported the defensive standout selected the Aggies over Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma and USC.

Hill is rated as the No. 15 overall player and the top-ranked linebacker in the 2023 class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. He's also the second-best prospect from the football-rich state of Texas.

The 6'2", 225-pound Ryan High School standout has also played running back in addition to his time leading the Raiders defense.

Ryan head coach Dave Henigan praised Hill's impact in September, per Steve Gamel of the Denton Record-Chronicle.

"He's definitely a catalyst. He's a phenom," Henigan said. "He's in even more of a leadership role than he was a year ago, and he was making plays back then. He's freakishly talented, but he's also a good kid and a hard worker. He's coachable, and you know he'll get better. He's just special."

Hill has the size and physical tools to become a high-impact, sideline-to-sideline linebacker at the college level. He's a reliable tackler and has also shown improvement in pass coverage, showing playmaking tendencies that could make him a force.

He possesses NFL upside if his development continues on its trajectory throughout his collegiate career.

Hill has shown enough in high school to believe he could make an immediate impact at the next level, but it'll likely take some time before his role as a freshman at Texas A&M is determined.

He'll eventually get his chance to shine for the Aggies, even if it doesn't happen right away. His arrival is a major in-state win on the recruiting trail for Jimbo Fisher and his staff.

Report: Malachi Nelson to Visit Texas A&M; 5-Star QB Previously Committed to USC

USC commit Malachi Nelson, a 5-star quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class, is reportedly going to visit Texas A&M over the weekend.

ESPN's Paolo Uggetti reported Friday that Nelson, who previously flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to USC after head coach Lincoln Riley moved from the Sooners to Trojans, informed Riley of his decision to visit the Aggies.

Nelson is the No. 2 overall prospect in next year's class based on 247Sports' composite rankings behind only fellow quarterback Arch Manning, who committed to Texas.

An interesting aspect of the signal-caller considering another school is the fact he's already agreed to a name, image and likeness (NIL) deal related to his choice of the Trojans.

Jeremy Crabtree of On3 reported Nelson reached an agreement to promote SLAB, a Texas-style barbecue restaurant in Los Angeles, and host a few USC tailgating events during the 2022 season before officially becoming a college player next year.

It's another unique situation as teams, players and companies continue to learn how to navigate the NIL era of college sports.

For his part, the coveted quarterback prospect told Crabtree he's trying to make smart decisions about how to handle those offers based on what he witnessed during the first year of implementation last season.

"You want to put yourself in the right position to not look like you're just doing it for the money," Nelson said. "Last year there were some college guys that had a bad game and then they had to wake up the next morning and post this endorsement deal. It doesn't look very good. So, my team has put me in a good position to avoid that from happening."

Meanwhile, the Los Alamitos High School standout is one of two 5-star prospects committed to the Trojans for 2023 alongside wide receiver Zachariah Branch. USC ranks 13th in the early recruiting ranking for next year, per 247Sports.

Texas A&M is a distant 60th at this stage of the 2023 process, but the Aggies are coming off the No. 1-ranked class in 2022.

Getting Nelson to flip would be another massive recruiting victory for head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff, and it could spark another surge toward the top of the rankings for A&M.

For now, however, the quarterback remains committed to Riley and the Trojans.

5-Star EDGE Prospect Jayden Wayne Commits to Miami over Alabama, LSU, Georgia, More

Jul 9, 2022

The Miami Hurricanes added one of the best defensive players in the entire 2023 recruiting class Saturday.

Defensive lineman Jayden Wayne announced he will attend Miami during an appearance on CBS Sports HQ.

Wayne, who checks in at 6'5" and 245 pounds, is a 5-star prospect, per 247Sports' composite rankings. He is also the No. 30 overall player, No. 5 EDGE and No. 9 player from the state of Florida in the 2023 class.

One look at the list of schools that offered him scholarships during the recruiting process underscores his overall talent level.

A laundry list of some of the top programs in the country was interested, including Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida, Auburn, Penn State, Texas and USC.

It is no surprise so many schools wanted to add him to their defenses.

After all, Adam Gorney of Rivals was so impressed with Wayne's play at the Pylon 7on7 Tournament that he compared the pass-rusher to Oregon's Kayvon Thibodeaux. It was quite high praise considering the Ducks defensive end has been widely considered the best prospect for the 2022 NFL draft for some time.

Brandon Huffman of 247Sports pointed to Arizona Cardinals star Chandler Jones as a pro comparison for Wayne and highlighted the prospect's "length and quickness to beat blockers off the ball and the explosiveness at the LOS to quickly get into the backfield."

Huffman suggested Wayne's athleticism alone gives him the ceiling of an elite pass-rusher as someone who could quickly develop into a key playmaker on his new team's defensive front.

Defenses need athletic linemen who can use their speed and burst both against the run and to prevent quarterbacks from establishing a rhythm in the no-huddle, fast-paced offensive approach so many take in today's college football.

If Wayne lives up to his potential, he will be just that for the Hurricanes.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and his staff are building up a strong roster of good, young prospects going into their first season with the program.

Even before Cristobal's arrival, the previous coaching staff did a good job of bringing in talent. The Hurricanes finished in the top 20 of 247Sports' national team rankings in 2021 and 2022.

Cristobal has already secured 13 commitments for the 2023 class. Wayne and offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa, teammates at IMG Academy, are 5-star recruits on their way to Miami next year.

It will be on Cristobal and his coaches to maximize the potential of high-ceiling players like Wayne to get the program back among the nation's elite.

5-Star WR Johntay Cook II Commits to Texas over Michigan, Oregon

Texas continued its momentum on the recruiting trail by landing 5-star receiver Johntay Cook, per Mike Roach of 247Sports.

The DeSoto, Texas, product is considered the sixth-best wide receiver in the 2023 class and No. 36 player overall in 247Sports' composite rankings. He chose Texas over finalists Oregon and Michigan, crediting head coach Steve Sarkisian and receivers coach Brennan Marion with helping him make the decision.

"Honestly, I'm ready to come home," Cook said. "It's just the right fit for me. I couldn't go wrong. Coach Sark is an offensive genius. Texas has been loving me since day one. Since the new staff got in there, it's been constant love. As soon as coach Marion got in there, it was like I've known him for two years. It's the best situation for me."

Cook is the third 5-star recruit in the 2023 class for Texas, joining top quarterback Arch Manning and safety Derek Williams.

The addition of Manning has seemingly been a major draw for recruits:

Cook said Manning called him before committing to encouraging him to also join the Longhorns. The receiver showed his excitement about the quarterbacks he will be working with in Austin.

"With Arch Manning, nobody is going to be able to fool with me and him," Cook said. "Freshman year I'll have Quinn Ewers, so I'm arguably going to have the best two quarterbacks in college football."

The 6'0", 175-pound wideout has been a big-time playmaker during his high school career. In 2021, he had 19 receiving touchdowns on just 38 catches.

Woods could provide a significant boost to Texas coming off a 5-7 season in the first year under Sarkisian.
