Top 5 ONE Championship Matches of 2019

Dec 17, 2019

The ONE Championship made headlines outside the cage in 2019 with the debuts of former UFC champions in Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez as well as their first nationally televised broadcast in the United States.

Ultimately, though, the Singapore-based promotion is judged on the final product they provide inside the cage, and this year was arguably their best in terms of quality matches.

There were dozens of bouts worthy of consideration, but which were the best of the best? Here are the top five ONE Championship matches of 2019.

5. Angela Lee vs. Xiong Jing Nan II

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF2dhzSWQVU

Date: October 12

Result: Lee def. Xiong by fifth-round rear-naked choke

The pressure was on Angela Lee heading into this match. Having suffered her first career loss at their first meeting in March and then losing to Michelle Nicolini just four months later, the once-"Unstoppable" Lee needed a win to keep the 23-year-old's hype train on track and defend her atomweight championship.

In the main event of a stacked ONE: Century card that was part of the first nationally televised ONE broadcast in the U.S., Lee relied on her world-class mat work to get the win. Unlike in their first matchup, the Singaporean did not attempt to outbox the strawweight champion, who is known as a knockout artist.

As a result, the two best female competitors on the ONE roster have a victory over each other and a trilogy match is likely in 2020. Could both the 115-pound strawweight and 125-pound atomweight belts be on the line this time around at a catchweight? If so, ONE would crown their first two-division female champion.

4. Nong-O Gaiyanghadao vs. Saemapetch Fairtex

Date: November 22

Result: Nong-O def. Saemapetch by fourth-round KO

ONE muay thai bantamweight world champion Nong-O Gaiyanghadao had perhaps the best year of anyone on the roster in 2019, winning the title before defending it three times. His last defense came against a game Saemapetch Fairtex, who went punch-for-punch with the legend in hopes of dethroning him.

The match nearly ended at the second round's conclusion after Nong-O landed an array of strikes, but Saemapetch managed to get up before the 10-count. The challenger came back firing in the third, landing big shots on Nong-O and looking rejuvenated as he tried to catch up on the scorecard. It was all for naught, though, as the champion landed a huge right cross in the fourth to knock Saemapetch out in what was an action-packed match.

3. Aung La N Sang vs. Brandon Vera

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvucpgy_16o

Date: October 13

Result: Sang def. Vera by second-round TKO

The highly anticipated megafight between ONE light heavyweight world champion Aung La N Sang and ONE heavyweight world champion Brandon Vera lived up to what you would expect from titleholders of the two heaviest divisions in mixed martial arts: a brawl.

Despite the match lasting less than two rounds, it was the "phone booth" approach taken by both men and the unhinged Tokyo crowd that gave this bout an old-school Pride or UFC vibe. Both competitors stood toe-to-toe looking to knock the other out. There was nothing fancy about it despite the striking of both competitors still being tremendous.

Although Vera landed heavy punches, Sang continued to eat every one of them like some reincarnation of the Terminator and pressed forward. The gas tank of Vera, who had never gone past the first round of a ONE match, clearly started to fade in the second, allowing Sang's world-class striking to put him out.

2. Jonathan Haggerty vs. Rodtang Jitmuangnon

Date: August 2

Result: Rodtang def. Haggerty by unanimous decision

The most technically advanced ONE match of the year was Jonathan Haggerty vs. Rodtang Jitmuangnon. Haggerty, who made a name for himself after his upset win over Sam-A Gaiyanghadao for the ONE muay thai flyweight championship in May, took on Rodtang, who was 4-0 at ONE heading in.

The 22-year-olds exchanged big strikes for the duration of the bout, jawing at each other while doing so. One kick from Haggerty nearly sent Rodtang out of the ring in the first round before the Thai rallied in the championship rounds to earn a unanimous decision. The Manila, Philippines, crowd grew louder during intermissions as both competitors egged the fans on.

We won't have to wait too long for the rematch as Rodtang defends his belt against Haggerty on Jan. 10.

1. Xiong Jing Nan vs. Angela Lee I

Date: March 31

Result: Xiong def. Lee by fifth-round TKO

The two most dominant female competitors in the promotion's MMA division met last March as Lee returned from a back injury that kept her out of action for five months. It was the female division's best striker in Xiong Jing Nan against one of the best submission specialists in the world in Lee, and the match still managed to exceed the lofty expectations that came with it.

The first three rounds was a feeling-out process for both competitors as they engaged with each other on their feet and on the mat. The drama really began in the fourth when Lee locked in a tight armbar that fans could have meant the beginning of the end for Xiong.

However, Xiong withstood the submission hold for nearly 90 seconds to conclude the fourth. She went into the final round swinging against a notably gassed Lee, who exerted an enormous amount of energy the previous round. The Chinese caught Lee with a wicked body shot that forced her to retreat toward the fence. Xiong began teeing off, leaving her foe unable to defend the barrage and forcing the referee to call the match.

Top 10 ONE Championship Fighters of 2019

Dec 12, 2019

It was a landmark year for ONE Championship. In a year of highlights, the most notable were the debuts of high-profile American talents Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez, hosting three grand prix tournaments, the expansion of its kickboxing and muay thai programs, and its first nationally televised broadcast in the U.S.

We saw an array of talent excel for the Singapore-based promotion in 2019, but who were the best of the best? Here's the Top 10 ONE fighters of 2019.

Note: The rankings are based only on an athlete's 2019 matches and not their career as a whole.

10. Angela Lee

2019 Record: 1-2

Accomplishments: ONE atomweight world champion

Highlight: Fifth-round submission of Xiong Jing Nan to defend her title

On the surface, it was very tough to include someone who had a losing record in 2019 on this list. However, considering her two meetings with Xiong Jing Nan were probably ONE's bouts of the year and Lee successfully defended her atomweight belt in October on national television in the U.S., it helps alleviate her surprising defeat to Michelle Nicolini.

Despite losing to Xiong in March while attempting to become ONE's first female two-division champion, she evened the score in her final match of the year and set up a trilogy bout with the Chinese in 2020.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF2dhzSWQVU

9. Martin Nguyen

2019 Record: 2-0

Accomplishments: ONE featherweight world champion

Highlight: Flying-knee knockout of Narantungalag Jadambaa

There weren't many ONE athletes more exciting in 2019 than Martin Nguyen.

Fully committing himself to defending the featherweight title after dropping the lightweight belt due to injury in 2018, The "Situ-Asian" faced former champion Narantungalag Jadambaa in April.

What followed was maybe the best knockout of the year, as Nguyen dropped Jadambaa with a vicious flying knee in the second round.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1116734178924560385

The 30-year-old then successfully defended his title for the third time by beating Koyomi Matsushima just four months later.

Nguyen has held the featherweight belt for two-and-a-half years and called out lightweight champion Christian Lee, whom he's fought and beaten twice before, to come down a weight class for the trilogy match.

8. Stamp Fairtex

2019 Record: 4-0

Accomplishments: ONE kickboxing atomweight world champion, ONE muay thai atomweight world champion

Highlight: Rear-naked choke submission over Asha Roka in her second mixed martial arts match

How good was 2019 to Stamp Fairtex? Entering the year, she was already the ONE kickboxing atomweight world champion. At the conclusion of it, she added a muay thai belt to her collection, becoming the first two-sport champion in ONE history. Not only that, but she continued her quest to become a three-sport champion by winning both of her mixed martial arts matches this year.

Despite questions being asked of her ground game heading into her MMA return, the 22-year-old Thai submitted Asha Roka in the third round and showed there's more to the phenom than just elite striking.

Stamp hopes to challenge ONE atomweight champion Angela Lee for her mixed martial arts belt in 2020.

7. Xiong Jing Nan

2019 Record: 1-1

Accomplishments: ONE women's strawweight world champion

Highlight: Fifth-round TKO of Angela Lee to defend her ONE women's strawweight world title

Xiong Jing Nan is one of two athletes who actually lost a match in 2019 but are included on this list.

Despite her defeat to Angela Lee in their rematch last October, the fact their two meetings were probably the bouts of the year in ONE Championship and Xiong successfully defended her strawweight belt in March is more than enough to put her among 2019's best performers.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1112333730658553856

The Chinese proved she's one of the top female strikers in the world, let alone ONE Championship. Her trilogy match with Lee is a near-certainty in 2020, and there's no reason not to expect another classic.

6. Giorgio Petrosyan

2019 Record: 3-0

Accomplishments: ONE kickboxing featherweight world grand prix champion

Highlight: Knockout of Jo Nattawut in ONE kickboxing featherweight world grand prix semifinal

Giorgio Petrosyan has been considered perhaps the best kickboxer in the world for years now, and 2019 only helped his argument.

Defeating Phetmorakot Petchyindee Academy, Jo Nattuwut and Samy Sana on his way to a world grand prix championship is an impressive feat, and doing so all by knockout or unanimous decision is an even greater one.

Signing Petrosyan to a full-time contract should be of utmost importance for ONE in 2020 as they continue adding kickboxing divisions to the promotion.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1162394840346386432

5. Nong-O Gaiyanghadao

2019 Record: 4-0

Accomplishments: ONE muay thai bantamweight world champion

Highlight: Fourth-round knockout of Saemapetch Fairtex

Winning a title is hard enough, but to do it and then defend the belt three times in a calendar year is unheard of in a promotion as big as ONE. In fact, it's the first time in ONE history that it happened.

The 33-year-old Thai overcame every challenge that fell his way, and for the most part, he did so in dominant fashion.

What's next for Nong-O is unknown, but a fourth title defense in 2020 would make him just the fifth ONE athlete to accomplish the feat.

4. Aung La N Sang

2019 Record: 2-0

Accomplishments: ONE light heavyweight world champion, ONE middleweight world champion

Highlight: Second-round knockout of Brandon Vera

Aung La N Sang defended each of his titles in 2019, defeating Ken Hasegawa in a much-anticipated rematch before beating ONE heavyweight world champion Brandon Vera in October's megafight.

Questions were asked of Sang's resume heading into his most high-profile bout to date, but he answered with aplomb as he knocked out the former UFC veteran in a brawl of a match.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cvucpgy_16o

ONE president Chatri Sityodtong has expressed interest in seeing Sang move up to heavyweight and rematch Vera in an attempt to become a three-division champion. Let's see if that is in fact next for the Burmese Python in 2020.

3. Rodtang Jitmuangnon

2019 Record: 5-0

Accomplishments: ONE muay thai flyweight world champion

Highlight: Majority-decision win over Jonathan Haggerty

Rodtang Jitmuangnon's relentless schedule probably would've gotten him on the list alone, but to be the only ONE athlete to compete five times in 2019 and go undefeated in that span is frankly absurd.

Also take into consideration his match-of-the-year candidate against Haggerty, and Rodtang proved he is just as much of an entertainer as he is the top muay thai flyweight in the world.

It's going to be nearly impossible for him to top 2019, but he can get 2020 off to a lightning start as he's set to rematch Haggerty on Jan. 10 in front of his hometown crowd in Bangkok, Thailand.

2. Demetrious Johnson

2019 Record: 3-0

Accomplishments: ONE flyweight world grand prix champion

Highlight: Submission of Yuya Wakamatsu

Having lost to current UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo in his final match before joining ONE Championship, Demetrious Johnson reminded everyone that he's still the best flyweight of all time and arguably the pound-for-pound best to ever do it when he entered the ONE flyweight world grand prix and defeated three of the promotion's best in a variety of ways.

First was Yuya Wakamatsu, a game opponent who managed to clip Johnson in the eye their first round before "Mighty Mouse" finished him with a guillotine choke in the second. Then, the 33-year-old faced his toughest challenger of the year when he defeated Tatsumitsu Wada by unanimous decision in what was a wrestling clinic from both competitors.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWHvbBcMcLs

In the grand prix final, Johnson looked quicker than in his previous two matches as he controlled the tempo of the bout and earned another unanimous decision victory over Danny Kingad.

The world grand prix champion is still getting used to the length of ONE competitors who are considerably taller than the UFC flyweights, but ONE's investment in one of the world's most respected mixed martial artists is already paying dividends.

Johnson's next test will likely come in the form of Adriano Moraes, the ONE flyweight world champion.

1. Christian Lee

2019 Record: 3-0

Accomplishments: ONE lightweight world champion, ONE lightweight world grand prix champion

Highlight: Unanimous-decision victory over Saygid Arslanaliev

For years, we kept hearing about a young Christian Lee who could be the next big thing at ONE Championship. But then, he'd lose big matches against Nguyen and we as critics and fans felt it best to pull back on the hype train until he finally got a marquee win. Well, 2019 was finally Lee's year.

After defeating Kazuki Tokudome and Edward Kelly, the 21-year-old challenged for legend Shinya Aoki's lightweight belt and made major adjustments after being largely dominated in the first round to earn the TKO win in the second.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1129410391564533764

Five months later, Lee stepped in on two weeks' notice to face one of ONE's most feared lightweights, Saygid Arslanaliev, in the world grand prix final. Lee dominated the match on the mat and won by a unanimous-decision victory. At the moment, there's really no doubt he is the top lightweight in the promotion.

The biggest stain on his legacy up to this point are his two losses to Nguyen. With the featherweight champion challenging Lee to a trilogy match in 2020, he has a chance to redeem himself. Also in contention for a shot at Lee's lightweight belt is "The Underground King" Eddie Alvarez.

Meanwhile, Denice Zamboanga, making her ONE Championship debut, upset local favourite Jihin Radzuan with a gritty unanimous-decision win in the atomweight division.

Here is the footage of the card in full:

The battle between Gaiyanghadao and Junguang topped the bill of action on the night, and it was easy to see why within seconds of the contest starting, as the pair exchanged a series of heavy blows.

Eventually, it was the former who started to establish a rhythm, and while Junguang did still have openings, he was finding it difficult to maintain pressure over the course of five rounds.

As a result, it was no shock when the bout was awarded to Gaiyanghadao. The FightHQ Twitter account noted this was a landmark win in kickboxing for the former Muay Thai competitor:

In the card's other title fight, Ramazanov had far too much for Chenglong and was eventually able to win via a unanimous decision.

Asian Boxing writer Cerebral Vigilante praised the performance of the Russian and the speed at which he's been able to establish himself in ONE Championship:

Zamboanga's victory was most impressive for how she dominated her experienced opponent.

Jihin was never given an inch. She was taken down to the canvas early in the first round, and the majority of the fight took place on the mat.

Zambouanga's wrestling and top control were admirable, particularly in the third round, when she was able to neutralise Jihin's most potent weapons.

The fighter from the Philippines took some counter-attack punches to the head in the final round, but she was able to prevent Jihin getting any kind of dominant position and was deserving of her victory.

There was lightweight success for Amir Khan against Ev Ting, as the local hero won by a split decision.Troy Worthen of the United States defeated China's Chen Lei by technical knockout in the second round.

Gaiyanghadao held on to his title after a stunning ending against Fairtex at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

The Evolve MMA champion turned out Fairtex's lights with a straight right that instantly floored the fighter.

The referee immediately waved off the fight, and Gaiyanghadao celebrated his win.

Gaiyanghadao remains one of the pound-for-pound best in his discipline, and he unloaded on his opponent time and again.

Fairtex received a barrage of punches:

Hometown fighter Khan was celebrated after he edged out fellow lightweight Ting by split decision.

An even contest saw both men go on the offensive, but the knockout specialist did enough to claim a 13th career win.

Worthen remained undefeated after the American proved too much for Lei.

A classic ground-and-pound finish allowed Worthen to pin Lei to the canvas and hand out a painful conclusion.

Raju executed a perfect submission in the corner, and the Indian grabbed an emphatic victory over Cheema.

Cheema did his best to escape from a rear-naked choke, but Raju had the move locked in, and the end soon followed in the second round.

Joshua Pacio successfully defended his strawweight world championship title with a second-round submission defeat of Rene Catalan in the headline bout of the ONE Championship Masters of Fate event in the Philippines on Friday.

Further down the card, Thai sensation Stamp Fairtex continued her foray into MMA with a dominant unanimous-decision victory over Bi Nguyen.

Meanwhile, Eduard Folayang took victory in the penultimate fight of the night against Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu. After the pair clashed heads in the second round, the Filipino was awarded the fight via technical decision.

Here are the results in full, via ONEFC.com:

Eduard Folayang defeats Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu via technical decision (lightweight)

Sangmanee Sathian Muaythai defeats Azize Hlali via unanimous decision (catchweight 68.0 kg muay thai)

Geje Eustaquio defeats Toni Tauru via knockout in Round 3 (flyweight)

Stamp Fairtex defeats Bi Nguyen via unanimous decision (atomweight)

Kim Jae Woong defeats Rafael Nunes via TKO in Round 3 (featherweight)

Kim Kyu Sung defeats Akihiro Fujisawa via knockout in Round 1 (flyweight)

Roshan Mainam defeats Khon Sichan via submission in Round 1 (flyweight)

Rene Catalan, 40, was a big underdog for his all-Filipino clash against Pacio on Friday, and in truth, he never really laid a glove on his countryman.

Pacio, 23, came out the blocks with a spinning back kick that landed flush on his opponent's midriff and closed out the first round with a flurry of body punches.

In the second, Pacio got on top after an early takedown, took side control and then secured an arm-triangle from which Catalan was forced to submit.

Fairtex produced another box office performance against Nguyen as the former continued her bid to become a three-sport world champion.

The ONE atomweight Muay Thai and kickboxing champion made a typically eye-catching entrance to the Mall of Asia Arena:

Nguyen staggered the 22-year-old with an early right hook, but it did not take long for Fairtex to assert some dominance on the canvas.

The second and third rounds were an exhibition in supreme striking from Stamp, and she deservedly extended her MMA record to 3-0 with a convincing victory:

Local star Geje Eustaquio, meanwhile, produced a devastating spinning back kick to knock out Toni Tauru in their featherweight clash:

It was a spectacular moment of vengeance for the Filipino, who lost to Tauru in 2016 at the ONE Championship Age of Domination event.

3 Burning Questions to be Answered

How Will Stamp Fairtex Fare Against the Experienced Bi Nguyen?

Stamp Fairtex is a veteran of muay thai, but her mixed martial arts career is young. With a 2-0 record, the two-sport champion on the right track in her newest endeavor.

However, Stamp's two previous opponents had a total of six bouts under their belt before facing her. Wins are wins, but the muay thai experience of Stamp was more than enough to overwhelm her foes despite the inexperience she had in a different sport.

Bi Nguyen is 5-4 and has five years of MMA competition under her belt. Although her professional record might not be terribly impressive, it's a step up in competition for Stamp. How will she do against a veteran?

Can Eduard Folayang Pick Up His 1st Win in Almost a Year?

https://twitter.com/ONEChampionship/status/1191173215676182529

Eduard Folayang is a legend in ONE Championship. One of the first signings in company history, the Filipino is a former two-time ONE lightweight world champion.

Unfortunately for Folayang, though, he's lost his past two matches against Shinya Aoki and Eddie Alvarez, respectively, with the second loss coming in his home nation. The 34-year-old must rebound against Amarsanaa Tsogookhuu if he wants to avoid a third straight defeat for the first time in his career.

Tsogookhuu is vastly less experienced than Folayang having only competed in six professional matches. Also take into consideration that the match takes place in the Philippines where Landslide will have the crowd behind him, and the bout is shaping up to be a nice bounce-back performance for Folayang. He needs it.

Can Rene Catalan Challenge Joshua Pacio?

https://twitter.com/ONEChampionship/status/1191897991382089728

To say it was a surprise to see Rene Catalan receive a world championship opportunity is an understatement. Yes, the wushu-oriented competitor was 41-1 when competing in that initial martial art. However, the 40-year-old is only 6-2 since making the transition to mixed martial arts in 2013. That's early in a career to be earning a title shot.

Granted, he's on a six-match win streak since dropping his first two matches, but they have come against fighters who in total are 14-13 since their bouts against Catalan took place. The younger Joshua Pacio, who is a two-time ONE strawweight champion and is looking to defend his title successfully for the first time, is by far Catalan's toughest test yet.

How will he do against his compatriot?

Kiamrian Abbasov defeated Zebaztian Kadestam at ONE Championship Dawn Of Valor on Friday, claiming the welterweight title in dominant fashion. In the co-main event, Regian Eersel beat Nieky Holzken in a rematch for the lightweight kickboxing belt.

Elsewhere on the card, there were strong ONE debuts for UFC veteran John Lineker and Chinese rising star Wang Junguang.

Here are the main card results from Dawn Of Valor:

Abbasov used his superior ground game to claim the welterweight title on Friday, beating knockout machine Kadestam in a strong display.

Kadestam started slow but seemed to be on the verge of winning the fight at the end of the second round, when Abbasov appeared to be tiring fast. The challenger was able to keep the fight on the ground in the third and fourth rounds, however, doing lots of damage and taking little.

The champion closed well in the final round, keeping the action upright, but he was well behind on the scorecards and couldn't find the stoppage he desperately needed.

In the co-main event, Eersel comfortably defended his title in a rematch against Holzken. The lanky 26-year-old controlled the action from the outside, while also mixing in some creativity:

Holzken had his moments, especially at the end of the first round, where the 35-year-old showed he still has plenty left in the tank. He slowed down as the fight wore on, however, and the decision was never in doubt.

The same can't be said for Gaol's win over Antoniyar, however. The hometown favourite survived a rear-naked choke attempt late in the first round and had already been punished for an illegal kick to the head of a grounded opponent at that time.

She picked up the pace on the feet over the course of the last two rounds:

The main card also included two anticipated ONE Championship debuts. In his first fight outside the UFC since 2011, Lineker did enough to get the win over Gafurov:

A longtime fan-favourite for his brawling style, the Brazilian could quickly become a bantamweight contender in ONE.

Wang also got his ONE career off with a bang, taking care of Roma inside a round:

With his spectacular style built around front-kicks and counter-striking, Wang has all the tools to rapidly become a star with the organisation.

3 Burning Questions to Be Answered

Is John Lineker ONE's next big star?

Lineker spent nearly seven years in UFC before deciding to take his talents to ONE a couple months ago. The Brazilian most recently fought No. 3-ranked UFC bantamweight Cory Sandhagen in a razor-thin split-decision loss in April.

Originally set to face Rob Font last June as a late replacement for an injured fighter, Lineker pulled out with an injury and was subsequently released by UFC despite being No. 10 on their bantamweight rankings at the time. He still owns the promotion record for most knockdowns at 135 pounds and lighter.

UFC's loss was ONE's gain as they quickly scooped up the 29-year-old slugger known for his entertaining brawls. His debut match at the Singapore-based promotion is against 16-2 Gafurov, who is on a five-match winning streak. What will the 31-9 veteran have in store for his inaugural ONE bout?

Will Zebaztian Kadestam join a historic group of ONE champions?

The "Bandit" Kadestam defended his welterweight championship for the first time in March, defeating Georgiy Kichigin after his corner stopped the match at the end of the second round. With a win over Abbasov on Friday, Kadestam would become just the 11th ONE mixed martial artist to defend a title at least twice.

The previous 10 is a who's who of ONE Championship's history and includes Bibiano Fernandes, Ben Askren, Angela Lee, Aung La N Sang, Martin Nguyen, Xiong Jing Nan, Adriano Moraes, Marat Gafurov, Brandon Vera and Shinya Aoki. Kadestam adding his name to that list would put him in exclusive company among the best fighters ONE has ever seen.

Standing in his way is Abbasov, who won 13 of his previous 14 matches to bring his total record to 21-4. Can the 29-year-old Swedish champion topple another worthy adversary and continue building his legacy?

Will Nieky Holzken get back to winning ways?

Three years ago, Holzken was riding a 12-match win streak as the Glory welterweight champion and perhaps the best kickboxer in the world. Since then, he's lost four of his last six matches, including a unanimous decision defeat to reigning ONE lightweight kickboxing champion Eersel last May.

The 35-year-old said he's had a tough time during his losing stretch.

"If you win five years in a row and then you lose one time, that's very difficult," Holzken told ONE. "Then you lose again and that's even more difficult. You want to quit. In your mind, you think 'I don't want to fight anymore. I hate it now.'"

Eventually, the Dutchman's mindset changed for the better as he began preparing for his rematch against fellow countryman Eersel, who can match Holzken's longest winning streak of 12 with a second consecutive victory over the legend. Is Holzken biting off more than he can chew against Eersel or does he still have gas left in the tank?

Demetrious Johnson Beats Danny Kingad in ONE Championship Flyweight Grand Prix

Demetrious Johnson defeated Danny Kingad by unanimous decision in the ONE Championship flyweight grand prix final on Sunday at Sumo Hall in Tokyo.

Johnson became the promotion's No. 1 contender for the flyweight belt, which is currently held by Adriano Moraes. Although he's not the titleholder, he still earned some impressive (and massive) hardware:

With the victory, Johnson is now 30-3-1 for his professional MMA career. Kingad fell to 13-2.

The bout took place on the two-part ONE Championship: Century card, which marked the 100th event of the mixed martial arts promotion. ONE Championship began operations in 2011 and is based out of Singapore.

The second part of the card will take place at 8 a.m. ET on Sunday. Light heavyweight champion Aung La Nsang's fight with challenger Brandon Vera highlights that event.

Fans can live-stream the next edition of ONE Championship: Century through B/R Live.

The 33-year-old Johnson was UFC's inaugural flyweight champion after winning a tournament final over Joseph Benavidez in Sept. 2012. He then successfully defended the belt 11 times over the next five years.

Johnson lost the title to Henry Cejudo after a split decision at UFC 227 in August 2018. He then signed with ONE Championship and entered the flyweight grand prix.

Johnson beat Yuya Wakamatsu by submission in the quarterfinals before earning a unanimous-decision victory over Tatsumitsu Wada in the semifinals.

He is one of MMA's most decorated fighters, and numerous people were impressed by his efforts:

Johnson was a heavy favorite in each of his three matches, so much so that betting on Johnson in a three-fight grand prix parlay would not have netted much of a return, per Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports:

The matchup with Moraes should prove to be an excellent fight, however. The champ is 18-3 for his career, with all three of his losses coming via split decision.

ONE Championship puts on its 100th event, ONE: Century, this weekend, and it's pulling out all the stops. For the first time, the Singapore-based promotion will feature two separate cards for an event, one on Saturday night and the other on Sunday morning.

Collectively featuring four title matches, three world grand prix finals and the return of top competitors like Demetrious Johnson, Brandon Vera, Giorgio Petrosyan and Angela and Christian Lee, this is shaping up to be ONE's most intriguing event yet.

While Johnson looks to become the No. 1 contender for ONE's flyweight title with a world grand prix victory, Angela Lee hopes to defend her atomweight crown in a highly anticipated rematch between her and women's strawweight champion Xiong Jing Nan. 4 Burning Questions to Be Answered

Will Demetrious Johnson make it look easy against Danny Kingad?

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1180845413454110720

Although he won his previous two matches at ONE, Johnson's victories weren't easy. Against Yuya Wakamatsu, "Mighty Mouse" was clipped in the eye by a powerful strike that forced him to rely on his grappling the remainder of the bout rather than try to go punch-for-punch with the powerful Japanese.

Against Tatsumitsu Wada, Johnson was often kept in check by his opponent's much longer frame, which gave Wada a wrestling advantage at times.

Although his next opponent, Danny Kingad, has also defeated Wakamatsu and Wada before, this matchup seems to fare Johnson better than his two previous bouts.

Kingad possesses neither knockout power nor a strong grappling arsenal, which doesn't bode well against someone of Johnson's ilk. One can only imagine what a world-class wrestler like Johnson can do against him when given the opportunity.

Kingad is a martial artist who gets the majority of his victories by decision, and that's a tough ask against an athlete as skilled and dynamic as the former UFC champion.

Can Angela Lee exorcise her demons at the most crucial time?

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1181646274472353793

After beginning her career at ONE a perfect 9-0, atomweight champion Angela Lee has now lost back-to-back matches.

Her first defeat came last March against Xiong when the 23-year-old attempted to become the first two-division women's champion in ONE history. It didn't turn out the way she had hoped, as Xiong escaped a deep armbar from Lee in the fourth round and landed a nasty body shot in the fifth to retain her title.

Now, Xiong is dropping down to atomweight in hopes of claiming the title Lee has held for over three years. A third straight loss for Lee would almost certainly put her out of the main event picture for the foreseeable future. To avoid that, she needs a win against Xiong, who would leave Tokyo as the indisputable top female athlete at ONE with another win over Lee.

"She has to defend her belt and she's taking it very personally," Christian Lee, Angela's brother and training partner, told Bleacher Report. "There will be fireworks. It's more than the belt on the line for her. It's her legacy."

Is Christian Lee biting off more than he can chew?

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1182294965159956482

The ONE lightweight champion did something rare for titleholders to do, taking a match on short notice ahead of ONE: Century. Although Christian Lee's belt won't be on the line, he'll still be gunning for a world grand prix championship after Eddie Alvarez pulled out of the tournament final with an injury.

With just three weeks to prepare, Lee faces one of the most dangerous competitors at ONE in Saygid Arslanaliev. "Dagi" tends to not waste time against his opponents, as seven of his eight victories came in the first round and five of those within two minutes. The term "knockout artist" may still somehow be an understatement when describing him.

If Arslanaliev wins to become the No. 1 contender to Lee's lightweight title, giving him a wave of momentum heading into an eventual championship match sounds like a terrifying proposition.

Lee has never been one to stray away from a match, but this seems like a really bold fight to pick without having a full training camp.

Is Brandon Vera or Aung La N Sang the most dominant big man in ONE history?

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1181932577134907399

For the first time in ONE history, champions of the two highest weight classes square off when heavyweight Vera drops down a class to take on light heavyweight Sang.

As is expected with most heavier competitors, both of these men are brawlers looking for the knockout. Sang, who is also the middleweight champion, rides a six-match win streak into Sunday. Meanwhile, Vera's 4-0 since joining ONE in 2014 with all four finishes coming in the first round.

It's a matchup of two of ONE's most popular athletes. Sang represents his home country of Myanmar—which honored him with his own statue last year—and Vera hails from the Philippines, where he's previously starred in television shows.

The winner of this bout earns the right to declare themselves ONE's most dominant big man.
