Top 5 ONE Championship Matches of 2020

Dec 23, 2020

The pandemic forced ONE Championship to host fewer events than it normally would in a calendar year, but there were still tremendous matches that took place under the Singapore-based promotion in 2020.

There were dozens of bouts worthy of consideration, but which were the best of the best? Here are the top five ONE Championship matches of the year based on quality of the bouts, excitement and enjoyment.

5. Xiong Jing Nan vs. Tiffany Teo

Result: Xiong def. Teo by decision

It seems like Xiong has a top match every year. Both of her bouts against Angela Lee in 2019 were match-of-the-year candidates at ONE, and she continued her streak of remarkable matches when she defended her strawweight title against Teo last October.

It was a battle of Xiong's striking against the ground game and spirit of Teo, who was looking to redeem her loss against the champion from two years ago.

Ultimately, Xiong prevailed, but these two women went at it for five rounds.

4. Kiamrian Abbasov vs. James Nakashima

Result: Abbasov def. Nakashima by fourth-round TKO

Heading into this match, Nakashima was a 12-0 American who looked to be next in line for ONE gold. He was dominating the welterweight division with wrestling that made him a standout at the University of Nebraska.

For the first three rounds of his match with Abbasov, Nakashima controlled the pace and kept away from the Kyrgyzstani champion's striking. However, the fourth round proved to be his downfall.

As Nakashima went in for another takedown, Abbasov landed a huge knee and wobbled his challenger (33:24 in the clip above). From there on, a series of punches and kicks ended the match and sealed a massive comeback victory for Abbasov to cement his first title defense.

3. Stamp Fairtex vs. Janet Todd

Result: Todd def. Stamp by decision

This was a rematch of a muay thai bout that Stamp and Todd had last year when the former narrowly defeated the latter. This time, their rivalry transcended into another sport when they competed in kickboxing for Stamp's atomweight championship.

It was a back-and-forth affair for five rounds, with neither competitor wanting to give the other any air. They put on a masterclass in kickboxing and had the best non-MMA match at ONE in 2020. In the end, Todd became just the second American ONE champion and first to do so outside of MMA.

2. Joshua Pacio vs. Alex Silva

Result: Pacio def. Silva by decision

You won't find a more technical match from ONE in 2020 than this one.

Silva, a jiu-jitsu black belt who has defeated nearly every one of his opponents by submission, came into the match looking to do the same against strawweight world champion Pacio. What was expected to be a battle between the mat work of Silva and the striking of Pacio turned into a showcase of both competitors' ground games. That was always going to be Silva's plan, but no one could have imagined the elite grappling defense of Pacio.

For every submission attempt Silva threw at the champion, Pacio had an answer for it. His hometown Filipino crowd loved what they were seeing and were heavily invested throughout all five rounds and made for the best atmosphere ONE was able to have this year.

Although Pacio was declared the winner, it could have gone either way.

1. Martin Nguyen vs. Thanh Le

Result: Le def. Nguyen by third-round TKO

Highly anticipated matches don't often live up to the lofty expectations put on them in the buildup. However, that was not the case for Nguyen vs. Le.

Heading in, Nguyen was the top knockout artist ONE had to offer. It seemed like every match he was part of ended in dramatic fashion. That continued to be the case when he took on Le, but this time he was on the wrong side of the result.

After two rounds, it was clear Nguyen struggled with Le's taekwondo style. He just couldn't quite get a good read on his stance and where exactly his strikes were going to come from. To compensate for this, Nguyen pressured Le immediately at the start of the third round and landed some heavy punches that clearly bothered his opponent.

It seemed like Nguyen was headed for another knockout to add to his resume until Le responded with a crisp right hand that came out of nowhere (26:19 in the clip above). Le took advantage of a hurt Nguyen and continued with an onslaught of punches until the referee came in to stop the match.

That third round was the best of ONE's 2020 and propels it to the top spot in these rankings.

Americans Tynanes, Worthen look to extend unbeaten runs

There's a good pipeline of American talent coming out of ONE, and two of the most intriguing prospects enter the spotlight on Friday.

Tynanes, a 10-0 Hawaiian ranked fifth in ONE's lightweight division, has been out of action since January of 2019 because of spondyloarthritis, an inflammatory rheumatic disease that attacks the spine and, in some people, the joints of the arms and legs. However, the 30-year-old now feels better and is ready to return against Marat Gafurov, the former ONE featherweight world champion. Tynanes is 6-0 at ONE.

Worthen is a 7-0 Floridian who had a stellar first year at ONE by going undefeated against three opponents with a combined record of 32-7. Now he'll take on his toughest competition yet when he faces No. 4-ranked bantamweight Yusup Saadulaev. A win would propel Worthen into the rankings as he continues his quest for a title shot.

Kryklia defends his ONE title for first time vs. Stoica

Kryklia, the 6'6" Ukrainian light heavyweight kickboxing world champion, returns to the ONE ring, where he'll defend the title he won in November of last year for the first time.

Kryklia was supposed to defend his title two weeks ago at Big Bang, but he was forced out after one of his cornerman was diagnosed with COVID-19.

He takes on Stoica, an 11-year Romanian veteran who has won his last two matches at ONE.

Nong-O defends his title against tournament champion Rodlek

After a sensational 2019 that saw Nong-O go 4-0 at ONE by winning the bantamweight muay thai title and defending it three times, the legend returns to face Rodlek, who won the bantamweight muay thai tournament last August to become the No. 1 contender.

Despite a remarkable 316 career matches, Nong-O has never crossed paths with Rodlek before. He's on a six-fight win streak dating back to 2018. Meanwhile, Rodlek is 4-1 since joining ONE.

Demetrious Johnson to Face Adriano Moraes for ONE Flyweight Title on Feb. 24

Dec 4, 2020

The highly anticipated title match between Demetrious Johnson and flyweight champion Adriano Moraes will take place Feb. 24, as announced during ONE: Big Bang on Friday morning.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1334853686330335232

Their match was originally scheduled for April 11 of this year, but it was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

After winning the ONE flyweight world grand prix tournament in October 2019, Johnson became the No. 1 contender for Moraes' title. The former UFC champion is 3-0 at ONE after defeating Yuya Wakamatsu, Tatsumitsu Wada and Danny Kingad on his way to the world grand prix championship.

Now, "Mighty Mouse" looks to become the first athlete to win both a UFC and ONE belt. During his time in the UFC, the Kirkland, Washington, resident was flyweight champion for six years and still owns the record for most consecutive title defenses with 11.

The 31-year-old Moraes is the only ONE athlete to win a belt on three separate occasions after he reclaimed it in January of 2019, and he is considered to be the best flyweight in the promotion's history. The Brazilian will go into the match having not competed since reclaiming the title, but the 18-3 veteran waited for a world grand prix winner to emerge and told ONE he's excited to test himself against who many consider the greatest flyweight of all time.

"I've been waiting for this legend versus legend fight—me and DJ—to see who is the best flyweight in the world," Moraes said. "I have the chance to show the world, my friends and my family what I have been working so hard for."

Moraes has beaten the best flyweights ONE had to offer over the years, including Geje Eustaquio twice, Kairat Akhmetov and Kingad en route to three title reigns.

For a promotion that hangs its hat on the competitiveness of their smaller weight divisions, this match should highlight just that as one of the most important bouts in ONE history. Johnson's quest to be considered the greatest pound-for-pound mixed martial artist of all time will take a major leap with a win over a vastly underrated Moraes, who has been close to the top of ONE's talent pool for years now.

The Feb. 24 event will stream on B/R Live and on the B/R app.

ONE Championship: Garry Tonon vs. Koyomi Matsushima How to Watch, Top Headlines

Dec 3, 2020

ONE Championship: Big Bang looks to live up to its name on Friday as it features jiu-jitsu world champion and No. 5-ranked undefeated featherweight contender Garry Tonon challenging No. 3 Koyomi Matsushima in the co-main event. The winner of this match would be on the brink of a title shot against champion Thanh Le.

Main eventing the card is ONE light heavyweight kickboxing world champion Roman Kryklia taking on Murat Aygun. Rounding out the rest of the card are the ONE debuts of heavyweight Amir Aliakbari and Glory lightweight champion Marat Grigorian. Undefeated fighters Bokang Masunyane and Ritu Phogat are also in action.

Here's the full card, top headlines heading in and how to watch Big Bang.

Top ONE: Big Bang Headlines

Tonon on brink of title shot with win over Matsushima

A seven-time jiu-jitsu world champion, Tonon has been on a tear at ONE after starting his mixed martial arts career just two years ago.

Since March of 2018, Tonon won all five of his matches by finish. The most dominant performance came during his last fight when he defeated Yoshiki Nakahara by heel hook in just 55 seconds.

The biggest test of Tonon's young MMA career comes on Friday against Matsushima, the No. 3-ranked featherweight who's coming off a KO win against Jae Woong Kim last February.

Kryklia defends his ONE title for first time vs. debuting Aygun

Kryklia, the 6'6" Ukrainian light heavyweight kickboxing world champion, returns to the ONE ring, where he'll defend the title he won in November of last year for the first time.

He takes on Aygun, who only has 14 matches in his six-year career. However, the Dutch-Turkish athlete is still considered one of the top heavyweight kickboxers in the world at 13-1. This title match will be his first in a light heavyweight division.

Aliakbari makes highly anticipated ONE debut

The 2010 Greco-Roman wrestling world champion, who transitioned to MMA in 2015, will make his ONE debut against an opponent yet to be announced. He was originally supposed to take on Islam Abasov, but the match was scratched less than a week before Big Bang. However, ONE confirmed on Twitter that Aliakbari will still compete on the card.

The 36-year-old Iranian originally signed for the UFC in June of last year but withdrew following a doping ban. UFC's loss was ONE's gain as they added the high-profile heavyweight to their roster last August. Aliakbari's most notable moment in MMA so far came with Rizin when he advanced to the 2016 world grand prix final, suffering his lone defeat to the legendary Mirko Cro Cop.

Undefeated Masunyane looks to make history

Masunyane and opponent Rene Catalan were late additions to the Big Bang card, replacing a flyweight bout between Danny Kingad and Kairat Akhmetov. Now, both newcomers have a spot in the strawweight rankings at stake.

With a win over the No. 3-ranked Catalan, South African Masunyane would become the first ranked African mixed martial artist in ONE history. He made his promotional debut last year against Ryuto Sawada, earning a sixth straight decision victory.

Meanwhile, Catalan is coming off a loss to ONE strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio.

Lineker on the brink of title shot with win over No. 1 Belingon

"Hands of Stone" Lineker is a former UFC bantamweight contender who went 12-4 during his time with the company, earning notable wins over Rob Font, Marlon Vera and Brian Kelleher. He made his ONE debut in October of last year and defeated Muin Gafurov by decision.

A win over ONE's No. 1-ranked bantamweight Belingon, who lost to champion Bibiano Fernandes in his previous two matches, could be enough for Lineker to overtake his Filipino opponent for the top contender spot.

BJJ world champion Yuri Simoes makes mixed martial arts debut

Jiu-jitsu and submission grappling fans will be familiar with Yuri Simoes. As a longtime practitioner, the 30-year-old Brazilian is a two-time ADCC Submission Wrestling world champion having claimed gold in 2015 and 2017. Last year, he signed with ONE to transition into mixed martial arts and will make his debut against Fan Rong.

Rong is 13-2 and also joined ONE last year. He lost to now middleweight world champion Reinier de Ridder in his debut before defeating Sherif Mohamed by knockout in June of 2019.

Nakashima looks to become the next American champion at ONE

Nakashima is a former University of Nebraska wrestler and LFA welterweight world champion. He'll hope to become the second American this week to become a ONE champion after Thanh Le won the featherweight world title at Inside the Matrix last week.

Abbasov won the belt in his last fight against Zebaztian Kadestam, improving his ONE record to 3-1.

Two lightweight contenders vie for potential title shot

No. 4 lightweight Timofey Nastyukhin and No. 3 Pieter Buist could potentially earn a shot at lightweight world champion Christian Lee with a win on Friday.

The last time we saw Nastyukhin in March of 2019 he shockingly knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the former UFC champion's ONE debut. Since then, he's recovered from a leg injury and hopes to continue his climb through the rankings.

During the time Nastyukhin's been out, Buist won all three of his fights at ONE by defeating Kota Shimoishi, Tony Caruso and Eduard Folayang. The Dutchman is on an eight-fight win streak.

ONE Inside the Matrix Fight Card: How to Watch, Stream Info and Predictions

Oct 29, 2020

ONE Championship: Inside the Matrix is this Friday, Oct. 30, and it features four title bouts between some of their top fighters.

Headlining the event is middleweight world champion Aung La N Sang taking on undefeated Reinier de Ridder. The co-main event features lightweight world champion Christian Lee defending his belt for the first time against 14-0 Iuri Lapicus.

Preceding the two headliners is featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen facing former TUF contestant Thanh Le and women's strawweight world champion Xiong Jing Nan rematching Tiffany Teo after their four-round battle nearly three years ago.

Where and How to Watch

ONE: Inside the Matrix is 8:30 a.m. ET on Friday, Oct. 30

Those in the U.S. can watch the event for free on B/R Live and the B/R app.

Full Card

• Aung La N Sang (26-10) vs. Reinier de Ridder (12-0)

Christian Lee (13-3) vs. Iuri Lapicus (14-0)

Martin Nguyen (13-3) vs. Thanh Le (11-2)

Xiong Jing Nan (14-2) vs. Tiffany Teo (9-1)

Eduard Folayang (22-9) vs. Tony Caruso (7-1)

Ritu Phogat (2-0) vs. Nou Srey Pov (1-1)

Does Aung La N Sang hand Reinier de Ridder his first defeat?

Sang has looked invincible at times in his three years as champion. He's decimated the three heaviest divisions at ONE, earning the middleweight and light heavyweight world titles before knocking out world heavyweight champion Brandon Vera in his previous fight a year ago.

Now he goes up against perhaps his toughest opponent yet when he defends his middleweight crown against undefeated De Ridder. The Dutchman is 3-0 at ONE and is a submission specialist, a different kind of opponent for Sang, who is used to the striking prowess of ONE's heavier fighters. De Ridder defeated fellow contender Leandro Ataides to earn a shot at Sang.

The 35-year-old champion might just be the pound-for-pound strongest fighter at ONE though, and it's tough to imagine De Ridder will have much success taking this fight down to the mat while also avoiding massive punches from Sang.

Prediction: Sang wins by KO in Round 2

Will Christian Lee stake his claim as the ONE lightweight GOAT?

It's rare to consider a 22-year-old as the greatest of all time in any promotion or division of MMA, but Christian Lee has quickly made that kind of impression at ONE.

After a terrific 2019 that saw him win the lightweight world championship from Shinya Aoki and defeat Saygid Arslanaliev in the lightweight world grand prix final after taking the fight on two week's notice, it's hard not to classify Lee as the best ONE lightweight of all time.

He could, however, convince any doubters by defeating 14-0 Iuri Lapicus on Friday. The 25-year-old Moldovan is only 2-0 at ONE, but he won both matches in convincing fashion and impressively submitted former featherweight world champion Marat Gafurov in his previous bout.

However, the submission expertise of Lapicus is going to have a tough time against the sheer strength of Lee, whose confidence in submission defense will be high after defeating Aoki, one of the best grapplers in the world.

Prediction: Lee wins via unanimous decision

Can a former TUF contestant win ONE gold?

The Ultimate Fighter Season 22 contestant Thanh Le, who is 3-0 with the promotion since joining last year, now steps into the biggest spotlight of his career when he takes on featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen.

This has potential to be the fight of the night as Le and Nguyen are both prolific strikers who look for the knockout at all times.

As Le told Bleacher Report, he's eager for the "chess match" that he and Nguyen are going to have inside the cage.

"He's really good at counter fighting," Le said. "He times his counters in different ways so you can't really get a beat on when he's going to drop that right hand on you. It's cool to see from the outside, and it's going to be really cool to problem-solve that in the cage in front of him, but another thing he likes to do is set up camp in front of you, and one thing I like to do is not hang out in one spot. Those two things are going to battle each other.

"I like to move a lot and dance around the cage and walk him into my shots and traps. I don't know that he's faced someone who's tried to do things like that on the grand scale that I'm going to do it. We'll find out on Oct. 30 if he'll be able to handle the cadence and complications I bring."

It should be an intriguing contest between Nguyen's counter striking and Le's evasiveness. The first fighter to make a mistake might just pay the ultimate price.

Prediction: Nguyen wins by TKO in Round 3

ONE Championship Inside the Matrix: Preview, Predictions for Four Title Fights

Oct 28, 2020

ONE Championship: Inside the Matrix is set for Friday, and it's the biggest card of the year so far for the Singapore-based promotion, featuring four title bouts among some of their most prominent fighters.

Headlining the event is middleweight world champion Aung La N Sang taking on 12-0 Reinier de Ridder. Sang looks for his sixth successful title defense at ONE since 2018. The co-main event features lightweight world champion Christian Lee defending his belt for the first time against 14-0 Iuri Lapicus.

Preceding the two headliners is featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen facing former The Ultimate Fighter contestant Thanh Le and women's strawweight world champion Xiong Jing Nan rematching Tiffany Teo after their four-round battle nearly three years ago.

Where and How to Watch

ONE: Inside the Matrix is at 8:30 a.m. ET. on Friday, Oct. 30.

Those in the U.S. can watch the event for free on B/R Live and the B/R app.

Match Previews and Predictions

Aung La N Sang (26-10) vs. Reinier de Ridder (12-0)

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1320387642748383234

Riding a seven-fight win streak, two-division champion Sang steps into the cage for the first time in over a year after knocking out ONE heavyweight world champion Brandon Vera to defend his light heavyweight belt. Now he drops back down to defend his middleweight world championship for the fourth time.

Meanwhile, the undefeated De Ridder is 3-0 at ONE since joining last year and is coming off a decision win over Leandro Ataides to become the No. 1 contender to Sang's middleweight crown.

De Ridder's prowess as a submission specialist poses a unique challenge to Sang, who is used to the pure striking that the heavier divisions at ONE typically offer. However, De Ridder has yet to face an opponent of Sang's ilk. The 35-year-old champion might just be the pound-for-pound strongest fighter at ONE, and it's tough to imagine De Ridder will have much success taking this fight down to the mat while also avoiding massive punches from Sang.

Look for the champion to get an early finish in this one.

Prediction: Sang wins by KO in Round 2

Christian Lee (13-3) vs. Iuri Lapicus (14-0)

After a remarkable 2019 that saw him win the lightweight world championship from Shinya Aoki and the lightweight world grand prix, Christian Lee returns to action to defend his crown for the first time.

He'll go up against undefeated Iuri Lapicus, who is 2-0 at ONE and trains with world champion kickboxer Giorgio Petrosyan at his acclaimed gym in Italy. The 25-year-old is coming off a win against former ONE featherweight world champion Marat Gafurov.

Lapicus is another submission specialist and could pose challenges for Lee, who relies more on his striking despite his amateur wrestling background. However, it's tough to imagine that Lee isn't up for the task after defeating Aoki, who has one of the top ground games in the world. This experience should do wonders for Lee's confidence and see him through to his first title defense.

Prediction: Lee wins via unanimous decision

Martin Nguyen (13-3) vs. Thanh Le (11-2)

This matchup has Fight of the Night written all over it.

Nguyen, who has successfully defended his featherweight world title three times since winning it in 2018, takes on former TUF Season 22 contestant Thanh Le, who is 3-0 at ONE and earned the finish in each match.

The 31-year-old champion won't be intimidated, though, as he is arguably the flashiest knockout artist at ONE. Just look at this flying knee he pulled off last year.

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1116734178924560385

This should be an intriguing contest between Nguyen's counter striking and Le's evasiveness. The first fighter to make a mistake might just pay the ultimate price. However, Nguyen's experience against some of the top strikers ONE has to offer should prepare him for Le, who is susceptible to counters.

Prediction: Nguyen wins by TKO in Round 3

Xiong Jing Nan (14-2) vs. Tiffany Teo (9-1)

Xiong Jing Nan made quite a name for herself in 2019 after two wild fights against Angela Lee. Now she defends her strawweight world title for the fourth time against Tiffany Teo, whom she defeated to earn the belt almost three years ago.

Despite her loss to Lee last October in an attempt to move down a weight class and become a two-division champion, Xiong is 4-0 when competing as a strawweight. Now she'll take on Teo, who continued to show off her grappling prowess the previous two fights against Michelle Nicolini and Ayaka Miura to become the No. 1 contender.

The issue for Teo is she's yet to bolster her striking since fighting Xiong in 2018, a match that the champion largely dominated. What's even more troubling for the Singaporean is Xiong has familiarized herself more with grappling defense by fighting Lee twice and managing to get out of a variety of holds. The writing is on the wall in this one.

Prediction: Xiong wins by TKO in Round 3

Thanh Le's Road from TUF to ONE Championship Title Fight

Oct 26, 2020

Thanh Le faces Martin Nguyen for the ONE featherweight world championship Oct. 30 at Inside the Matrix. Watch for free on B/R Live and the B/R app.

Thanh Le has had an unconventional route to his ONE Championship title fight against featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen on Friday, Oct. 30, at Inside the Matrix. The well-traveled Le, who has competed for seven different promotions in seven years, will soon step under the largest spotlight of his professional career.

However, it won't be the first time the 35-year-old is surrounded by lights and cameras. In fact, Le's experience on Season 22 of The Ultimate Fighter prepared him for this moment.

"It was my first experience being exposed to high-level athletes at the top who do this for a job and nothing else," Le told Bleacher Report. "They've dedicated their life to it. It was really nice to be exposed to that."

The Ultimate Fighter, or TUF, is a reality television series that features professional fighters living together and follows them as they train and compete against each other for a six-figure contract with the UFC.

At the time of his open tryout for TUF five years ago, Le had a 4-1 record and was less than two years into his pro career. He told Bleacher Report that the tryout was his way to prove to himself and to his dad—who exposed him to martial arts as a child—that he belonged with some of the best up-and-coming fighters the world had to offer.

After impressing at the casting call, Le joined 31 other fighters in Las Vegas in hopes of becoming The Ultimate Fighter. It was there that he met UFC legend Urijah Faber, who coached the American fighters for that season.

Much of the early storylines of this season revolved around the coaching styles of Faber and the notorious Conor McGregor, coach of the European fighters. McGregor took a more hands-off approach, saying he didn't feel a responsibility to coach anyone but rather provide the team with the best mental and physical conditions possible to win fights.

Faber, on the other hand, was very hands-on and felt everyone on the team had to contribute in order to get the desired results. To this day, Faber's work ethic is Le's biggest takeaway from his former TUF coach.

"He's gotten this far in the sport for a reason," Le said. "It was really cool to see him be the general of his team but still be part of the team and lead by example by being completely engulfed in training."

On the first episode, Le fought in the preliminary round in hopes of officially joining Team Faber. What followed was a spectacular performance against Andres Quintana punctuated by a knockout punch.

"Andres was tough, but Thanh definitely had the advantage and caught him with some crazy kicks," Faber said after his pupil's preliminary round win. "It was flashy stuff that worked."

UFC president Dana White, who was also in attendance for Le's win, gushed over his performance.

"Thanh Le looked awesome in this fight," White said. "This kid has unbelievable striking, great kicks and great punches. This kid is a very exciting fighter, and he's going to be fun to watch this season."

Le stayed on the show for seven episodes before losing his elimination-round match to Martin Svensson, but that didn't mark the end of the road for Le at UFC. The Metairie, Louisiana, native would return to the Octagon two years later as part of Dana White's Contender Series, another platform the UFC uses to scout prospective talent. Le impressed once again, knocking out Lazar Stojadinovic.

"You know it's time," Le said to White post-fight, hinting at negotiations for a more long-term contract. "Let's go."

The UFC was eager to sign him afterwards, but as Le told B/R, they just never got the timing right.

"They reached out to me for two fights," Le said. "One was on five- or six-day's notice, and I didn't want my first outing to be me missing weight. They couldn't get me a different weight class fight so I couldn't make weight and didn't even attempt to do it. That's something that's really important to me. If I make a commitment, I want to make sure I'll be able to do my job to the best of my ability.

"The other time, they wanted me to fight out of the country, but my passport needed to be renewed and I couldn't do that because it was another short-notice fight."

Instead, Le went on to win the interim LFA featherweight championship and catch the attention of ONE Championship. Since signing with the Singapore-based promotion last year, he's won all three of his fights by knockout and fast-tracked himself to a title shot against ONE featherweight world champion Martin Nguyen on Friday, Oct. 30.

Le looks back fondly on his time with TUF as the stepping stone he needed to get to this point.

"It was a little surprising to go out there to perform and realize you belong there, too," Le said. "It gives you some comfort. I met quite a few friends, was exposed to Team Alpha Male and Conor McGregor and got a feel for big cameras in your face and a lot of hype behind your fights.

"At the end of the day, though, signing with ONE was the best thing that could've happened to me," Le said ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

He'll take on another knockout artist in Nguyen who's earned the finish in all but one of his 10 wins at ONE. Le's eager for the "chess match" that him and Nguyen are going to have inside the cage.

There is another unexpected positive from TUF that Le is only just now learning to appreciate.

"A big plus that just came to be because of the pandemic was fighting in an empty room. I'm definitely used to that at this point."

We'll soon find out if Le's long path to a world championship title shot ends with gold around his waist.

Top ONE: Reign of Dynasties Headlines

Josh Tonna looks for a shocking upset over Sam-A Gaiyanghadao

When the Reign of Dynasties card was announced, the most eye-catching inclusion was Josh Tonna as Sam-A Gaiyanghadao's next challenger to his strawweight muay thai world championship.

Tonna, who is 2-1 with the promotion and defeated No.4-ranked Andy Howson last February in his first muay thai match with ONE, wasn't even ranked as one of their Top Five strawweight muay thai fighters until recently. His quick rise to the top now has him in a title match against one of the most decorated competitors at ONE in Sam-A.

The Thai has an astounding 369-47-9 record, while Tonna comes in as the far less experienced fighter at just 34-17.

Undefeated Aleksi Toivonen looks to break into flyweight rankings

He may only have one match to his name at ONE, but 7-0 Aleksi Toivonen is the real deal. Having defeated all of his opponents by submission, including six of them in the first round, the Finn is ready to get back in the cage after a 15-month layoff because of injury.

His biggest test yet comes against No. 5-ranked flyweight Reece McLaren, who's a submission specialist in his own right. The ONE veteran is 6-4 with the promotion and is coming off a statement first-round win over Gary Mangat.

This has potential to be fight of the night. Will Toivonen continue his dominance and earn a spot in the rankings, or does the veteran savviness of McLaren prevail?
