Report: Texas QB Shane Buechele in Transfer Portal, Intends to Leave Longhorns

Jan 17, 2019

University of Texas junior quarterback Shane Buechele reportedly entered the transfer portal Thursday, according to Stadium's Brett McMurphy.

Anwar Richardson of Orange Bloods reported Wednesday that Buechele informed the team of his decision along with freshman quarterback Cameron Rising, who also intends to transfer.

Buechele backed up Sam Ehlinger in 2018, finishing with 273 yards, two touchdowns and one interception on 30-of-44 passing.

The 21-year-old Buechele is an Arlington, Texas, native who won the Longhorns' starting quarterback job as a true freshman in 2016. He showed great promise, finishing the year with 2,958 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 12 games.

Buechele began 2017 as the starter but lost the starting job to Ehlinger due to injuries before regaining it. By the end of UT's 7-6 campaign, Buechele had been supplanted by the freshman, which set the stage for his current desire to transfer.

All told, Buechele threw for 1,405 yards, seven touchdowns and four picks in nine appearances during the 2017 campaign. Ehlinger finished with 1,915 yards, 11 TDs and seven picks, and he followed that up with 3,292 yards, 25 TDs and five picks last year as the Longhorns finished 10-4.

Since Buechele appeared in just two games last season, he is able to count it as a redshirt season under new NCAA rules.

That means he still has two years of eligibility remaining.

Per Tom Fornelli of CBSSports.com, Buechele is on track to graduate in May, which means he will be eligible to play immediately as a graduate transfer if he transfers during the summer.

With Ehlinger leading the Longhorns back to prominence in 2018 and having the makings of a Heisman Trophy contender for the 2019 season, an injury was Buechele's only hope of seeing significant playing time at Texas.

By transferring, Buechele will have a legitimate chance to start elsewhere for two years and potentially put himself in position to develop into an NFL prospect.

Texas defensive end Breckyn Hager didn't cut his hair during his four-year career, but he finally got a major trim Monday from Matthew McConaughey of all people.

The actor showed off his work from the haircut:

Hager initially planned in 2015 to avoid a haircut until the Longhorns won a Big 12 title. The team never won the conference championship but did at least end the 2018 season with a Sugar Bowl title.

This was apparently enough for the senior to cut off his locks at the end of his four-year career with the team.

His roommate Andrew Beck admitted in November that Hager hated his long hair, via Stacy Slayden of KVUE, so you have to admire the player's commitment to his original statement.

Meanwhile, McConaughey is a Texas alum and big supporter of the program. The actor was on the sidelines at the Sugar Bowl and was recently named "Minister of Culture" for the school's new basketball arena.

Sam Ehlinger: Texas Is 'Back' After Win over Georgia in 2019 Sugar Bowl

Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger made a major proclamation Tuesday after upsetting Georgia 28-21 in the Sugar Bowl.

According to ESPN.com's Sam Khan Jr., after being named Sugar Bowl MVP, Ehlinger was asked about the importance of the win. In response, he exclaimed, "Longhorn Nation—we're baaaaaaaaack!"

The No. 15 Longhorns beat a No. 5 Georgia team that many felt deserved a spot in the College Football Playoff despite suffering two losses.

Georgia dropped to 11-3 on the season with Tuesday's defeat, while Texas improved to 10-4.

The win was a significant one for Texas since it hadn't won 10 or more games in a season since 2009.

Ehlinger was the driving force behind the victory, as he threw for 169 yards and added 64 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries.

When asked if Texas is indeed "back," Longhorns head coach Tom Herman wasn't quite as emphatic as his quarterback, but he was hopeful nonetheless: "I'll never know what that means, 'Is Texas back?' It could mean a lot of different things. And so I'll never comment on that. I know we're headed in the right direction. I don't ever want to give any kind of finality to where we're at because we are always making progress."

Big things were expected out of the Longhorns when Herman made the leap from Houston, and after going 7-6 in his first campaign with the program, he has Texas back in the national conversation with a Big 12 Championship Game appearance and a Sugar Bowl victory.

Given the fact that Ehlinger and several other key players are set to return in 2019, and Oklahoma could be in for some regression without quarterback Kyler Murray, Texas may finally find itself in the College Football Playoff mix next season as well.
