AEW's Hangman Page Diagnosed With Concussion After Being Pulled From Dynamite

Oct 19, 2022

AEW announced Tuesday night that "Hangman" Adam Page suffered a concussion during his AEW World Championship match against Jon Moxley on Dynamite.

In a statement, AEW also noted that Page had been released from a Cincinnati trauma center and placed in the company's concussion protocol:

The injury occurred late in the title match between Moxley and Page when Mox hit Hangman with a stiff lariat. Page flipped to sell the move but appeared to land on his head and neck when falling to the canvas.

After checking on Page, the referee called for the bell and awarded the win to Moxley via stoppage. Page was subsequently removed from the ring and taken away on a stretcher.

Several wrestlers showed their support for Page after watching the scary incident, including MJF, who broke his heel character to express hope that Hangman would be okay:

In what could have been an ad-libbed segment after the match ended abruptly, MJF confronted Moxley and announced his intention to cash in his Casino Ladder Match chip for an AEW world title match at Full Gear on November 19.

As for Page, Tuesday marked his first AEW World Championship match since Double or Nothing in May, which saw him drop the title to CM Punk.

The journey toward becoming AEW world champion started with the company's formation for Page, as he was in the inaugural AEW World Championship match, losing to Chris Jericho.

After falling short on a few occasions and switching focus from time to time, Page finally became AEW world champion at last year's Full Gear when he defeated former tag team partner Kenny Omega.

It was among the biggest feel-good moments in the history of AEW and helped further cement Page's status as one of the promotion's top stars.

That star power was on display in what was an entertaining and hard-hitting match with Moxley on Tuesday. However, it ended in a manner that no one wanted to see.

Page is now on the road to recovery, and while it isn't yet known when he will be back in the ring, it seems he was fortunate to avoid an even more serious injury.

Chris Jericho, AEW Agree to 3-Year Contract Extension Through December 2025

Chris Jericho agreed to a contract extension this week that will keep him in AEW for at least the next three years.

According to Joe Otterson of Variety, the extension runs through December 2025 and will expand Jericho's backstage role to include producer and creative advisor. He will also mentor young talent on the roster.

Jericho was the inaugural AEW world champion, and he currently holds the ROH World Championship, making him one of only two wrestlers to hold world titles in AEW, ROH and WWE, along with CM Punk.

When asked why he decided to sign a three-year extension with AEW, the 51-year-old veteran said:

"I guess the simple answer is 'Why not?' Things have been going so well in the company, and I really do feel that this is my company. It's tattooed on my heart, so to speak. I've been here since Day One, and there's really no reason not to be here continuing forward.

"When AEW first started, I think basically it was Chris Jericho and a group of very talented people that might not have been as well known. Within three months that changed and now within three years, we've got at least a dozen, maybe two dozen, of our own homegrown stars that came into their own on AEW television."

AEW President Tony Khan also commented on Jericho's new deal and new set of responsibilities, saying:

"Chris Jericho long ago cemented his legacy as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and we're fortunate to have his skills, charisma, knowledge and insights in AEW for years to come. Chris has discovered a fountain of youth this year, and he's having some of the very best matches of his legendary career against some of the top names in wrestling. In expanding his responsibilities, he'll continue to serve as a valuable leader with our roster having the opportunity to utilize one of the most creative minds in the history of wrestling."

When Jericho initially signed with the upstart AEW promotion in 2019, it sent shockwaves through the wrestling world since he had worked on and off with WWE from 1999 through 2018 and long maintained that he didn't want to go anywhere else.

Jericho was AEW's first huge star and first world champion, and he was largely leaned on to carry the weekly Dynamite television show and pay-per-views for the first year of the company's existence.

Along with the development of non-WWE stars like Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, Hangman Adam Page and MJF, AEW would eventually beef up its roster by signing other former WWE performers as well, such as Jon Moxley, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole, Punk and many others.

Jericho's star power and name recognition undoubtedly played a significant role in giving AEW credibility during its early days, and AEW is seemingly trying to make lightning strike twice by having him lead the ROH brand after Khan purchased ROH earlier this year.

The announcement of Jericho's contract extension comes just days after AEW announced an extension for Moxley as well.

Moxley's extension is five years in length through 2027, and much like Jericho, it will expand his role to include working more closely with young talent as a coach and mentor.

AEW already had a strong foundation, but with two of its linchpins in place for the foreseeable future, it should continue to thrive as an alternative to WWE.

Report: AEW Star Saraya Cleared to Return from Neck Injury After 2018 WWE Retirement

Newly signed AEW star Saraya has reportedly been cleared to return to in-ring action after suffering a neck injury that forced her to retire in 2018.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlingInc's Nick Miller), AEW doctor Michael Sampson has cleared Saraya to wrestle.

The 30-year-old Saraya made her surprise AEW debut on the Grand Slam episode of Dynamite last month after previously being under contract with WWE from 2011 until 2022 under the ring name Paige.

As Paige, Saraya was one of the biggest stars in the WWE women's division, becoming the inaugural NXT women's champion in 2013 and then winning the Divas Championship in her first match on the main roster in 2014.

The Norwich, England, native would go on to become a two-time Divas champion, but her career was interrupted by injuries, including a neck ailment that required surgery in 2016 and kept her out until November 2017.

Her return was short-lived, as she injured her neck again in December 2017, compelling her to announce her in-ring retirement in April 2018.

WWE would use Saraya in a multitude of non-wrestling roles after her retirement, including SmackDown general manager, The Kabuki Warriors' ringside manager and a member of the WWE Backstage weekly show on FS1.

Saraya's WWE contract expired in July, which opened the door for her to potentially sign with another wrestling company. She chose AEW and is reportedly in line to wrestle for the first time in nearly five years.

Upon debuting in AEW, Saraya entered the ring and didn't get physical. She then cut a promo on the following episode of Dynamite and booked the first women's lumberjack match in AEW history.

Saraya also got physical by punching Britt Baker, which seemingly foreshadowed her eventual return to the ring.

The AEW women's division has undoubtedly lagged behind the men's division, as well as the women's divisions in both WWE and Impact Wrestling in terms of exposure and television time.

Signing a legitimate star such as Saraya could help change that, and getting her back in the ring would perhaps generate more interest than ever in the AEW women's division.

Report: AEW’s Andrade Sent Home After Backstage Scuffle With Sammy Guevara

AEW superstar Andrade El Idolo was reportedly sent home from Wednesday's episode of AEW Dynamite at the Entertainment & Sports Arena in Washington, D.C., after getting into a backstage altercation with superstar Sammy Guevara.

According to TMZ Sports, "words were exchanged, and then things turned physical. Sammy allegedly pushed Andrade, and punches were thrown." However, it wasn't clear if anyone was hit in the exchange.

The animosity between Guevara and Andrade stems from a tense back-and-forth on Twitter on Tuesday. Andrade said during a recent interview with Mas Lucha that he had an issue with Guevara for saying he hits too hard in the wrestling ring.

"I had an issue with him because he once came to the locker room and complained that we hit him too hard," Andrade said (translated from Spanish; h/t Eric Mutter of Wrestling Inc.). "It's wrestling. Solve it in the ring. If I hit hard, hit me hard, too. I learned that he came in and that he accused me like a little girl. After I learned about it, I spoke to him and asked if he had an issue with me, but he said he did not and that's all there was to it."

Guevara posted a vague tweet without tagging Andrade directly. Andrade followed with a tweet of his own, which kicked off the back-and-forth:

Andrade is married to WWE superstar Charlotte Flair. He spent seven years with the company, most notably winning the NXT championship as well as the United States championship. He had posted some vague tweets that led some to believe that he is unhappy in AEW and wants to go back to WWE.

Shortly before AEW Dynamite aired on Wednesday, Andrade posted a cryptic tweet, possibly referencing the incident with Guevara:

This isn't the first time Guevara has had an incident with another AEW superstar. Eddie Kingston was suspended in August for getting into a physical altercation with Guevara after feeling like the 29-year-old went too far during an unaired promo and hasn't been carrying himself like a professional.

According to TMZ Sports, "several wrestlers" have been unhappy with Guevara "for publicly airing personal/private issues," and things boiled over with Andrade on Wednesday.

This is yet another off-air incident AEW has had to deal with in recent weeks. After the All-Out pay-per-view in September, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, CM Punk and Ace Steel were all involved in a backstage altercation that led to them being suspended indefinitely.

WWE and AEW Title Changes We Want to See in Coming Weeks

The temperatures may be cooling down, but the action over the next month in All Elite Wrestling and WWE should be heating up, with major championships likely to change hands.

Some of the top titles will be on the line at upcoming pay-per-views, and fans are ready to see new performers at the top of their respective divisions.

Here are the championships that fans want to see change hands soon.

AEW World Championship

Whether or not you agree with Jon Moxley beating Bryan Danielson for the AEW World Championship, Moxley has been the face of the company since he arrived and remains its most consistent performer.

With that said, he was scheduled to take time off from wrestling and be with his wife and their child, but the backstage mess sparked by CM Punk's media briefing after All Out in September forced Moxley to carry the brand again.

Now that MJF is looming with his Casino ladder match poker chip, though, Mox should drop the title and be written off television for a well-deserved vacation.

The heel not only needs the title right now to capitalize on the excitement surrounding his return to AEW, but the company also needs him at the top of the card to make up for the void left by suspended stars like Punk, Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks.

The Full Gear PPV is approaching on November 19, and the show needs a main event. The Salt of the Earth should cash in his title shot for a match against Moxley, only to use underhanded tactics to steal the belt and put the former champion on the shelf.

AEW needs a shot in the arm, and MJF as champion is exactly what fans want right now.

WWE SmackDown Women's Championship

At Extreme Rules, Liv Morgan will defend her SmackDown Women's Championship against Ronda Rousey.

While the titleholder remains popular with fans, it’s time for a heel Rousey to take over as the top Superstar on the blue brand.

Roman Reigns may be dominating the men’s division like few others in history, but The Baddest Woman on the Planet is a bigger mainstream star. Between starring in movies and her run as a top draw in UFC, she has the fame WWE needs for SmackDown on Fox.

Morgan deserves credit for her underdog run as champion, but Rousey as a heel is exactly what the company should have booked before.

Now, WWE Creative has the chance to right those wrongs and create a memorable moment in Philadelphia by letting the 35-year-old dominate the titleholder and walk out with the belt.

With everyone chasing Rousey on Friday nights, the show will become must-watch TV again, especially if the former MMA star fully unleashes her heel persona on the WWE Universe.

Add in the possibility of a Rousey-led stable, and SmackDown is about to get very interesting.

NXT Women's Championship

Mandy Rose has become one of the most dominant champions in NXT history and completely rebuilt her character and in-ring reputation.

The 32-year-old deserves immense credit for the career overhaul she has undertaken in NXT.

With all of that said, though, Alba Fyre should beat her at Halloween Havoc on October 22 and win the NXT Women's Championship.

Rose has held the title for over 340 days, defeating every top name put in front of her along the way, but it’s time for a main roster call-up for Toxic Attraction.

Before Rose heads to Raw or SmackDown, she should put over Fyre at Halloween Havoc and cement the regime change.

Fyre would be the perfect name to lead a women’s division that needs a top face.

There are several heel challengers waiting in the wings—Cora Jade, Tiffany Stratton and Blair Davenport—so booking a popular performer like Fyre to take the title would reinvigorate interest in the newly revamped NXT brand.
