Saraya Will Be the Game-Changer AEW's Women's Division Has Been Waiting For

Sep 23, 2022

All Elite Wrestling has undergone a bit of a reset following the aftermath of All Out. As such, it needed a big win heading into its second foray into New York City with Dynamite Grand Slam, and it delivered when new signing Saraya garnered an unbelievable reaction and much-needed positive buzz.

Since its inception, AEW has given many established stars a new lease of life. Jon Moxley has become the heart and soul of the company. Chris Jericho reminded us that he could still be a draw as its inaugural champion. Bryan Danielson remolded himself into a violent, technical wrestling savant who could work the style of matches he wanted.

Even more, the relatively new alternative allowed Sting and CM Punk to craft the final chapters of their storied careers. Now, Saraya will have the same opportunity as she looks to conquer her fears and finish her career on her terms.

Bitter Work for a Sweet Payoff

The wrestler formerly known as Paige in WWE has had a tough road back since undergoing neck surgery in 2016. She initially returned on the November 20, 2017 episode of Raw but suffered a second neck injury a month later, which ultimately forced her to retire the following year.

It was a tragic outcome for the young star. If you didn’t sympathize with her, you had to be made of stone. After all, who could forget that heartbreaking episode of WWE Chronicle where she found out she would have to step away from wrestling for good?

Yes, we’ve seen many names prematurely retire from pro wrestling. Nonetheless, it was devastating to see the second-generation prodigy hang up her boots at the age of 25. She seemingly still had so many years ahead of her. She also missed out on many of the advancements in women’s wrestling that her run with NXT helped to set in motion.

It’s still unclear if Saraya is cleared to wrestle again, but she has been working toward this for at least a year. There were even rumors that she was set to compete in the 2022 women’s Royal Rumble match. When her WWE contract expired in June, many speculated that the British wrestler could return to in-ring competition.

At any rate, AEW is lucky to have such a bona fide star with years of experience. If the ovation she received at Arthur Ashe Stadium is anything to go by, she should play a prominent role in its women’s division.

Saraya Must Be a Catalyst for Change

It’s understandable for many of the company’s vocal critics to be skeptical. Its highly criticized use of the women’s division has been a consistent talking point since 2019, and high-profile signings like Ruby Soho or Athena haven’t made a significant impact.

Nevertheless, Saraya brings more notoriety than any of the past acquisitions. One could argue she is the most recognizable female wrestler to join the company to date. Her time on Total Divas made her a household name, and her life was the subject of a biopic starring Florence Pugh called Fighting with My Family.

So, the first NXT women’s champion presents Tony Khan with a unique opportunity to capitalize on her star power. Considering his track record, there is no real excuse this time around. AEW has to invest in Saraya as the company did with male stars of her caliber.

Such a surprise debut seems to imply she plans to wrestle again. If that’s the case, then Khan should use her to highlight lesser-known talent even if she works special-attraction matches as Sting does. Saraya is popular enough to help legitimize the women’s division.

However, consistency and efficient use of her name recognition is key. She should cut in-ring promos as often as possible. It would be a mistake to relegate her to the same backstage segments that have hindered other women on the roster.

If AEW wants to present her as a big deal, the audience in the arenas and at home must see her consistently. That may seem simple, but it’s a part of the approach that helped Britt Baker and The Acclaimed develop into two of the company’s success stories.

Saraya can be a game-changer for a company that has been in search of a marquee name, even though it may seem risky to place so much faith in someone who has struggled with a neck injury that was thought to be career-ending.

Regardless, this is still a major test for AEW. This is Khan’s chance to change a persistent narrative about the company and prove it can be a place that values women’s wrestling. Properly utilizing someone as noteworthy as Saraya could entice other big names to join its ranks and motivate the rest of the roster.

Jon Moxley defeated Bryan Danielson in the finals of the Grand Slam Tournament of Champions on the Grand Slam edition of Dynamite at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City on Wednesday night to become AEW world champion for a record third time.

Just days after CM Punk defeated Moxley in the main event of All Out to win the AEW World Championship, the title was vacated due to Punk suffering an injury and reportedly getting suspended because of a backstage altercation with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks.

In order to determine a new champ, AEW president Tony Khan announced a six-man tournament featuring wrestlers who had held major titles in AEW and other promotions previously.

Moxley and Chris Jericho received byes into the semifinals, while four others had to battle it out in the first round in order to move on.

Danielson, who was a five-time world champion in WWE and one-time world champion in Ring of Honor, took down former AEW world champion "Hangman" Adam Page in the first round. Meanwhile, Sammy Guevara beat Darby Allin in a clash of former TNT champions.

In the semis, Moxley was victorious over Guevara, while Danielson got revenge for his loss to Jericho at All Out by making him submit and securing a spot in the finals of the tourney.

Danielson arrived in AEW in September 2021, and it wasn't long after that he entered into a rivalry with Moxley. That led to a match at Revolution in March, which was won by Mox.

After the contest, William Regal made his AEW debut by breaking up a fight between Danielson and Moxley, and he ultimately united them by creating the Blackpool Combat Club.

Danielson and Moxley fought alongside each other ever since, but they were rivals once again at Grand Slam since the biggest prize in AEW was on the line.

Ultimately, it was Moxley who prevailed and became the first-ever three-time AEW world champion. The win also likely set the stage for a title match against MJF, who became No. 1 contender by winning the Casino Ladder Match at All Out earlier this month.

Former WWE star Paige made her All Elite Wrestling debut as Saraya at this year's edition of AEW Dynamite Grand Slam in New York on Wednesday.

Saraya made her debut after Toni Storm claimed the Interim AEW Women’s World Championship in a win over Britt Baker, Serena Deeb and Athena. She announced her presence to a roaring Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, which gave her a big pop as she entered the arena.

Paige was a two-time Divas champion during her time in WWE, but she was forced to retire in 2018 because of a neck injury.

However, her neck has since vastly improved. She went on the Bellas Podcast with Nikki and Brie Bella (h/t Wrestling Inc's Dakota Cohen) last month and gave some good news:

"My neck is fantastic. I'm having no issues with it, and it's looking good. I still want more time, though. I mean, I've had nearly five years completely out of the ring, which is, it goes by so quickly. I'm like, 'How?' But yeah, I can see myself in the ring one day, but it would have to be something really special and like for like a big moment, even like, for WrestleMania."

Now she's set to make her long-awaited return back in the ring since Dec. 2017.

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe and AEW.

Danielson Downplays Praise

Even though many fans and fellow wrestlers praise his work in the ring, Bryan Danielson doesn't concern himself with being the best wrestler in the world.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated's Justin Barrasso, Danielson explained he tends to focus on what his objectives are for every match rather than trying to prove his greatness:

"I don’t worry about being the best. I try to be the best wrestler I can be, and I try to fulfill the vision of what I would like wrestling to be. This is a joy. I gauge matches on whether I enjoyed them, whether I was in the moment or felt how much fun it was to wrestle in front of thousands of people. A day or two later, that’s when I watch the match and pick it apart and see where I need to improve—but also to be proud of what I did well."

Jon Moxley, who has worked with Danielson for years going back to WWE, has called him the greatest wrestler ever.

There's no single standard for what makes someone great in the ring, but it's hard to argue anyone does it better than Danielson. He's proved his credentials on the biggest stages around the world, be it at WrestleMania or All Out or New Japan's annual Tokyo Dome show.

Even if Danielson doesn't want to boast about being the top wrestler in the world, no one will dispute he's on the short list of the top stars working right now.

Kurt Angle Open for One More Match

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP_JIb7ZgH8

It's been three years since Kurt Angle officially retired as a wrestler, but the WWE Hall of Famer would be open to having one more match if it's with the right opponent.

Appearing on WrasslinNews (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), Angle revealed he would return to the ring for a match with John Cena, Roman Reigns or Seth Rollins.

"John, I still think that he is possibly still in his prime. So I would definitely say John Cena. And the reason for that is, I’m 53 years old. I’m not the same athlete I was when I was 33. And when I decided to retire, it was because I lost the step. Knowing that John’s still in his prime, I know that he can carry me through a match. (…) I’d want a Roman Reigns or Seth Rollins, or even a John Cena. Those are the names that I would pick because I know those guys would carry me through the match."

Angle's last match in WWE to this point was at WrestleMania 35 when he lost to Baron Corbin.

Cena is an odd choice because he's also older for a wrestler (45) and hasn't worked full-time in WWE since 2017. Both he and Angle are experienced enough they could probably put together a match that is solid, though not at the peak level for either one.

Reigns is obviously the biggest star in WWE. Any match he's involved in has an additional air of gravity to it because it's been so long since he lost. Angle clearly wouldn't be the one to end his winning streak, but they can string together a good match.

Rollins would be the best candidate to get something resembling a great match out of Angle. He's proved his ability to work safely based on what he and Cody Rhodes accomplished at Hell In a Cell when the American Nightmare competed with a torn pectoral muscle.

If WWE wants to give Angle one more match, it wouldn't be hard to come up with a storyline to make it work. But the Olympic gold medalist has been open about his issues with memory loss due to concussions, so it's probably not in his best interest to try wrestling again.

WWE Adjusting Holiday Schedule

Since WWE runs television shows every Monday and Friday, plus some Saturdays or Sundays for premium live events, it can be difficult for everyone to get traditional holidays off.

That does seem to be changing under the company's new leadership.

Per Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select (h/t Fernando Quiles Jr. of Wrestling, Inc.), WWE has added Veterans Day, Juneteenth, Thanksgiving eve and a floating holiday to its 2023 schedule for employees.

The report does note WWE intends to keep running holiday tours next year, and off days could vary.

According to Sapp, employees were made aware of the changes during an all-employee meeting led by co-CEOs Stephanie McMahon and Nick Khan and chief creative officer Triple H.

WWE has a holiday tour planned for this year from Dec. 27 to 30, with stops in Detroit, Cleveland, Quebec and Toronto. Day 1 is scheduled for New Year's Day at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.

The company has been open in recent years to giving talent more time off. Reigns has been working a reduced schedule for most of 2022 as part of his new contract.

Being able to decrease the number of dates an individual talent works does stand to benefit WWE in the long run because it will give more television time to new people and keep things fresh.
