Watch out NFL, Green Bay Boasts League's Next Big 3

Oct 28, 2019

How about Triple A?

That's what we should call the triplets who are primed to bring the Green Bay Packers on a Super Bowl run this winter.

Aaron (Rodgers), Aaron (Jones) and (Davante) Adams have actually been together for several years in Green Bay, obviously, but they've rarely been healthy and properly utilized together. And now, it looks like that's about to change.

Right now, Rodgers and Jones are in such a deep groove that it's scary to think what the Packers offense will be capable of when Adams returns from the toe injury that has cost him four consecutive games. It sounds like he's close, which is bad news for the rest of the league. The Packers are 4-0 without him after Sunday night's 31-24 road victory over the Kansas City Chiefs, and they've averaged 32.5 points per game in those outings.

The personnel has become noticeably more comfortable in new head coach Matt LaFleur's offense. And after LaFleur's predecessor continually underutilized Jones, he and Rodgers are going out of their way to get the ball into the hands of a playmaker with game-changing speed.

The result Sunday was a 226-yard performance on the ground (13 carries, 67 yards) and through the air (seven catches, 159 yards) for Jones, who with two scores became the first player in the NFL this season with more than 10 touchdowns.

Per ESPN's Rob Demovsky, the 24-year-old became the first Green Bay back to compile 150 yards receiving in a game since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger and just the fifth back with 150 receiving yards and two touchdown catches in an outing since 1989.

He now has 551 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns in the last four weeks, which is remarkable considering that opposing defenses haven't had to worry about Adams in any of those games. He's averaged a strong 4.9 yards per carry during that stretch, and he had two more touchdowns overturned in Kansas City.

Rodgers is as healthy as he's been since 2017, and the numbers indicate he's grown more comfortable with a more innovative offense. In the last two weeks, he's completed 75 percent of his passes, averaged 11.5 yards per attempt, thrown eight touchdown passes to zero interceptions, and his passer rating is 152.0.

And again, that's without Adams. When Adams was last on the field—before the offense truly began to click—he caught 10 passes for 180 yards.

We already knew what Rodgers and Adams brought to the table—one is the highest-rated passer in NFL history, the other is coming off back-to-back Pro Bowl seasonsand we've seen glimpses of Jones. But it's refreshing to see the Packers finding new and unique ways to exploit defenses with players not named Rodgers or Adams.

"I didn't know coming in I was going to be used that much in the pass game," Jones told NBC's Michele Tafoya following the game, "but Coach LaFleur saw something [in the film], he took advantage, and he did a great job—him and Aaron."

With fellow third-year back Jamaal Williams also playing well and spelling Jones as a rusher and a receiver, it all bodes well for Green Bay's prospects entering the second half of the season at 7-1.

Following an offseason spending spree, the defense is considerably more talented than it was at the end of the Mike McCarthy era. And while that unit had trouble in a hostile environment against an exceptionally fast and well-coached offense Sunday night, the Packers entered Sunday tied for fourth in the league in takeaways. They've surrendered just 20.4 points per game, and through seven weeks, the D had the seventh-best DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) at Football Outsiders

Throw in the veteran leadership they have along the offensive line and the valuable experience peripheral receivers Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Geronimo Allison, Allen Lazard and Jake Kumerow have gained with Adams out, and it looks like Green Bay's offensive triplets have the requisite support for a special season.

Reinsert Adams and it's fair to place the Packers with the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers, who are the only other NFC teams with seven wins. They're probably a cut above the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. And they should have Adams back well before they have to travel to San Francisco in Week 12.

In fact, there's a chance Adams will return for what should feel like a home game against a Los Angeles Chargers team that lacks a fanbase in L.A. next weekend. They'll certainly be favored there, just as they'll be expected to beat the vulnerable Carolina Panthers back at Lambeau ahead of a Week 11 bye.

So start thinking about the Packers as a Super Bowl-caliber team. I know it's been a couple of years since they've even been to the playoffs, but this team has a different feel. And it starts with that Big Three, which is about to explode under the tutelage of a coach who isn't taking his "Triple A" for granted.

Choosing which players to start during bye-week season is a tough decision every fantasy football enthusiast faces. That choice can become even more difficult in a gameweek during a season like this one.

In Week 7, the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers are on byes. This means that fantasy stars like Christian McCaffrey, Chris Carson, Mike Evans, Nick Chubb, Odell Beckham Jr., James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuter are unavailable.

Because of the injuries that keep cropping up in 2019, players like Ben Roethlisberger, Drew Brees, Davante Adams, Sterling Shepard, Alvin Kamara, Tyrell Williams and A.J. Green are also out.

Which players can you rely on in Week 7? Here you will find a look the top 50 flex options—based on PPR scoring—along with some potential sleepers and waiver-wire options.

49. Latavius Murray, RB, New Orleans Saints

50. Mike Williams, WR, Los Angeles Chargers

Latavius Murray, RB, New Orleans Saints

There's a chance New Orleans Saints running back Latavius Murray will not be available on the waiver wire, but it's worth checking to make sure. According to FantasyPros, he's still available in 35 percent of Yahoo leagues and 48 percent of ESPN leagues.

Murray is worth scooping up for Week 7 because the Saints are going to be without star running back Alvin Kamara.

Murray faces a tough matchup against the Chicago Bears defense that is allowing just 83 rushing yards per game. However, if he's used in the passing game similarly to how the Saints have used Kamara, he will be worth a start based on PPR value.

Kamara has averaged a little more than five receptions per game.

Auden Tate, WR, Cincinnati Bengals

A player more likely to be available is Cincinnati Bengals receiver Auden Tate. He's only owned in 34 percent of Yahoo leagues and 38 percent of ESPN leagues, according to FantasyPros.

Tate, a 2018 seventh-round draft pick, has emerged as Cincinnati's No. 2 receiver in the weeks since John Ross was placed on injured reserve. He's averaged four receptions per game over the past three weeks and is coming off a five-catch, 90-yard outing.

The Bengals host the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, which makes for a fairly average matchup. The Jaguars rank 16th in pass defense, allowing an average of 241.5 yards per game through the air.

Consider Tate a low-end WR or flex play in Week 7 and a player worth stashing for future byes.

Demaryius Thomas, WR, New York Jets

Now that quarterback Sam Darnold has returned to the New York Jets, wideout Demaryius Thomas has some strong fantasy appeal. He has caught four passes in each of his past two games and is coming off a four-catch, 62-yard performance against the Dallas Cowboys.

Thomas doesn't have the easiest matchup against the New England Patriots, though he may be motivated to stick it to his former team.

"At the end of the day, I couldn't do anything for them," Thomas said of the Patriots, per Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. "Once I got traded here, I was happy to be back with Adam [Gase]."

Consider Thomas a low-end option against the Patriots, but he is worth picking up for future weeks. He is owned in just 6 percent of Yahoo and ESPN leagues, according to FantasyPros.

Start 'Em, Sit 'Em Week 7: Latest Fantasy Football Lineup Advice for Sunday

Injuries have been a constant theme during the 2019 fantasy football season. Another big one occurred Thursday night, when Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a dislocated kneecap, which will likely sideline him for several weeks.

Mahomes owners won't have to worry about finding a replacement quarterback until Week 8, but there are plenty of situations that will require replacement players Sunday. Players like Davante Adams and Sterling Shepard remain out, while the bye week will claim the likes of Christian McCaffrey, Nick Chubb, Chris Godwin and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Which fringe options are worth sticking in the lineup for Week 7? That's what we will examine here. We will look past the must-start players like Aaron Rodgers and George Kittle and focus on lower-tier players who make the cut—and those that do not—in Week 7.

Quarterbacks

Start 'Em

Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis Colts

Gardner Minshew II, Jacksonville Jaguars

Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers

Daniel Jones, New York Giants

Gardner Minshew II at Cincinnati Bengals

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew II has been playing mostly solid ball this season, but he's coming off a disaster of a fantasy performance. In Week 6, he passes for just 163 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Well, Week 7 is set to be a good one for Minshew to rebound and a great time to start him in fantasy. He and the Jaguars are set to take on the Cincinnati Bengals, who have allowed 241.5 passing yards per game this season.

Cincinnati has allowed a whopping 8.4 yards per attempt, fifth-most in the NFL. Expect Minshew to connect on a few chunk plays while passing his way to a respectable fantasy outing.

Sit 'Em

Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami Dolphins

Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals

Derek Carr, Oakland Raiders

Case Keenum, Washington Redskins

Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago Bears

Running Backs

Start 'Em

Latavius Murray, New Orleans Saints

Devin Singletary, Buffalo Bills

Duke Johnson Jr., Houston Texans

Jordan Howard, Philadelphia Eagles

Austin Ekeler, Los Angeles Chargers

Latavius Murray at Chicago Bears

Latavius Murray and the New Orleans Saints do not have an ideal matchup against the Chicago Bears defense. Chicago has allowed just 83 rushing yards and 312.2 total yards per game, fifth- and sixth-fewest in the NFL, respectively.

However, Murray is a starting option because of workload alone. The Saints have decided to rest star running back Alvin Kamara (knee, ankle) for the game.

"It's, 'Is the player healthy to play?' And if he is, then we'll play him," head coach Sean Payton said, per ESPN's Mike Triplett. "And if he's not, then we won't."

Murray will be particularly valuable in PPR formats. Expect him to take over Kamara's role as a receiver out of the backfield while splitting carries with Dwayne Washington.

Sit 'Em

Joe Mixon, Cincinnati Bengals

Adrian Peterson, Washington Redskins

Tarik Cohen, Chicago Bears

Kenyan Drake, Miami Dolphins

Rashaad Penny, Seattle Seahawks

Wide Receivers

Start 'Em

John Brown, Buffalo Bills

Auden Tate, Cincinnati Bengals

Hunter Renfrow, Oakland Raiders

Golden Tate, New York Giants

Dante Pettis, San Francisco 49ers

Golden Tate vs. Arizona Cardinals

Golden Tate made his return from suspension in Week 5. While he didn't have a major impact for the New York Giants immediately, he did shine a week later against the New England Patriots. He caught six passes for 102 yards and a touchdown.

Part of the reason why Tate was a fantasy star in Week 6 was the absences of Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram and Saquon Barkley. While both Engram and Barkley will return Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Shepard will not:

This means that Tate will again be one of Daniel Jones' top targets. Against a pass defense that has allowed an average of 281.2 passing yards per game (30th), Shepard should again have a strong day.

Sit 'Em

DeVante Parker, Miami Dolphins

Marvin Jones, Detroit Lions

Ted Ginn Jr., New Orleans Saints

Paul Richardson, Washington Redskins

Willie Snead, Baltimore Ravens

Tight Ends

Start 'Em

Hunter Henry, Los Angeles Chargers

Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills

Gerald Everett, Los Angeles Rams

Darren Fells, Houston Texans

Hunter Henry at Tennessee Titans

Los Angeles Chargers tight end Hunter Henry returned to the starting lineup in Week 6 and made an immediate impact. Though he didn't do enough to deliver a win for the Chargers, he likely delivered plenty of fantasy wins.

Henry finished with eight catches, 100 yards and two touchdowns.

Don't expect the former Arkansas star to have another stat line this impressive in Week 7. However, he should still have a strong outing against the Tennessee Titans. While Tennessee is allowing just 217.3 passing yards per game, Henry should be the focal point pretty much every time Los Angeles enters the red zone.

Sit 'Em

Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans

Packers' Davante Adams Ruled out vs. Raiders with Turf Toe Injury

Oct 18, 2019

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Oakland Raiders because of turf toe, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said Friday.

Adams has not played since suffering the injury Sept. 26.

In his sixth NFL season, Adams has struggled with injuries this year, and the Packers' receiving depth has been ravaged.

When he's in the lineup, Adams is Aaron Rodgers' go-to receiver. He's put up 25 receptions for 378 yards, numbers that would rank him as a clear WR1 over the course of a full 16-game slate. He has yet to find the end zone in 2019, though.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling appears to be the likeliest option to take over top billing with Adams out, but he is questionable for Week 7 with knee and ankle injuries.

Davante Adams: 'You're on Meth' If You Disagree Packers Have Best RBs in NFL

Davante Adams has a high opinion about the Green Bay Packers running back tandem of Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams following Monday's 23-22 win over the Detroit Lions.

The Packers' star receiver, who has missed the past two games with turf toe, tweeted that anyone who doesn't believe Jones and Williams are the NFL's best duo must be taking an illicit substance:

They combined for 151 rushing yards on 25 carries against the Lions.

Jones' yards per carry has dropped from 5.5 last season to 3.9 in 2019, but he leads the NFL with eight rushing touchdowns. Williams is averaging a career-high 4.8 yards per carry and had the second 100-yard game of his career in Monday's win.

Green Bay ranks 17th in the NFL with 105.8 rushing yards per game, but the team is off to a 5-1 start. Many things are going right for the team in 2019, including the partnership between Jones and Williams.

Davante Adams Ruled Out for Lions vs. Packers with Toe Injury

Oct 12, 2019

Davante Adams' turf toe injury will keep him out of the Green Bay Packers lineup for Monday's game against the Detroit Lions.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur announced Saturday his star wide receiver will be unavailable for the second straight week.

Adams has been fairly durable throughout his career. The Fresno State product played at least 13 games every year since he entered the league as a second-round pick in 2014.

The two-time Pro Bowler is the clear-cut No. 1 option for Aaron Rodgers and finished last season with 111 catches for 1,386 yards and 13 touchdowns, all of which marked career highs. It was also the third straight year he finished with double-digit touchdown catches.

Adams has followed up with 25 catches for 378 yards in 2019.

While Green Bay cannot realistically expect someone to replicate Adams' impact on the field, it does have other options at wide receiver who could get more targets while he remains sidelined. Look for Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison to serve as the primary playmakers on the outside while Jimmy Graham draws attention at tight end.

Still, the Packers have their eyes on a Super Bowl title this season and will likely need Adams back and healthy if they are going to make that a reality.

Packers' Davante Adams Unsure of Return Timeline from Foot Injury

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams is uncertain when he will be able to return from a turf toe injury that forced him to miss last week's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

According to Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Adams called the injury a "major" one:

"We're just really trying to pace it at this point. I can't really tell you when I'm going to play. It doesn't feel how I want it to feel at the moment, but we definitely have time, so we'll just kind of play this thing [out], and I know Mr. [head coach Matt] LaFleur will definitely be able to take care of any other questions regarding that."

Adams has yet to practice this week, and he is considered day-to-day leading up to Monday night's game against the NFC North rival Detroit Lions.

Adams added that while surgery is not required, he doesn't want to return too quickly:

"Well, the fact of the matter is I'm not playing through anything when it comes to this—it's not a toughness thing. I've shown you guys, I've shown the world what being tough looks like on the football field. I'm not interested in winning any medal of honor awards. I'm going to get back when it's healed and it's ready to go. I'm going to listen to my body and listen to my doctors."

The 26-year-old got off to a slow start this season through three games, but he broke out against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4. He finished with 10 receptions for 180 yards, but he exited early with the toe injury.

Adams has been one of the NFL's most productive receivers over the past few seasons, with double-digit touchdown catches in three consecutive campaigns entering 2019. He also enjoyed a career year in 2018, registering 111 grabs for 1,386 yards and 13 touchdowns en route to his second Pro Bowl nod.

Without Adams, much of Aaron Rodgers' focus will shift toward second-year wideout Marquez Valdes-Scantling and fourth-year man Geronimo Allison, as well as veteran tight end Jimmy Graham.

LaFleur's offense may also be more run-heavy while Adams is out, which was the case last week when Aaron Jones rushed for 107 yards and four touchdowns.

During Adams' absence, Jones is a clear-cut RB1, and both Valdes-Scantling and Allison are worthy of flex consideration.

Packers' Davante Adams Calls Turf Toe Injury 'Major'; No Timetable for Return

Green Bay Packers receiver Davante Adams said Thursday he doesn't know when he's going to return to the field after dealing with turf toe:

"It is a major injury so it's something that we gotta pay attention to and make sure we monitor in the correct way to make sure it's not something that gets re-aggravated later in the season," Adams said.

He didn't practice on Thursday, and he didn't sound optimistic about playing in Week 6 against the Detroit Lions, according to ESPN's Rob Demovsky.

"It doesn't feel how I want it to feel at the moment," he said.

Adams first picked up the injury in Week 4 against the Philadelphia Eagles during a game where he finished with 10 catches for 180 yards. His absence down the stretch hurt the team's chances at a comeback in an eventual 34-27 loss on Thursday night.

The two-time Pro Bowler is an elite receiver when healthy, totaling 35 touchdown receptions from 2016-18.

While the Packers earned a 34-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys without Adams last Sunday behind the stellar play of running back Aaron Jones, the star receiver's absence was still felt in the passing game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers completed just four passes to receivers, with Geronimo Allison leading the way with two catches for 28 yards. Most of the targets went to running backs and tight ends in the Week 5 win.

Adams was also the priority in the passing attack last year, finishing with more than twice as many catches and receiving yards as the No. 2 receiver, Marquez Valdes-Scantling. His 13 receiving touchdowns were more than the rest of the team combined (12).

With the latest injury potentially keeping Adams out for an extended stretch, Rodgers must learn to spread the ball around more.

Aaron Jones' Fantasy Outlook After Packers Record 4 TDs vs. Cowboys

The Green Bay Packers offense didn't miss Davante Adams, the team's usual fantasy standout, Sunday.

The Pro Bowl wide receiver was ruled out for the Packers' Week 5 34-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys because of turf toe, and running back Aaron Jones more than compensated for his absence.

Jones went off for 107 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries, becoming the first player ever to rush for four touchdowns in a single game against the Cowboys, per ESPN Stats & Info. For good measure, the 24-year-old added seven catches for 75 yards. He led all Packers in both categories.

Happy Sunday, indeed, for Jones fantasy owners.

Jones' efforts earned 49.2 PPR (points per reception) points, putting him in heralded fantasy air:

En route to his impressive final tally, Jones had three runs of at least 10 yards in the first half—matching his total number of 10-yard runs through the first four weeks of the season:

The Packers' impetus for increasing Jones' usage may have been missing Adams. But after he translated the extra touches into record-breaking production, why wouldn't Green Bay continue to do so regardless of Adams' status? The bigger concern is fellow running back Jamaal Williams.

Upon rookie head coach Matt LaFleur's hiring, the expectation was that Green Bay would be able to more efficiently run the ball.

However, Jones' performance Sunday came on the heels of the Packers' 34-27 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. And in that game, near the beginning of the fourth quarter, Green Bay refused to run the ball when faced with a 1st-and-goal from the Philly 1-yard line or the three downs afterward.

Perhaps LaFleur learned his lesson.

Sunday marked Jones' second 100-yard rushing game of 2019, the other coming in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings. It should be noted that his 116 yards against the Vikings came when Williams was healthy. Williams was out for Sunday with a concussion.

So far this season, the only game in which Williams received more carries than Jones was in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. Williams ran the ball 12 times to Jones' 10.

Once Williams returns, it would make sense for Jones to maintain the majority of attempts. Big games for Jones feel likely in the short term as the Packers are set to face the Detroit Lions' 20th-ranked run defense in Week 6 and Kansas City's 30th-ranked unit in Week 8.

If you don't already have Jones on your fantasy team, chances are getting slimmer that he will be made available as he approaches RB1 territory. But if he is available, snatch him up immediately and take a flier on a back that could finally be used how he should have always been.

Despite only having three divisional games left in Week 5, there is a lot still at stake. Seven games feature matchups between teams with at least .500 records. Two of them—The Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts contest and the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers tilt—will come in prime time.

This is the point in the season when the contenders need to start breaking away from the pack.

Which teams are likely to come out of Week 5 with victories? That's what we will examine here. We will take a look at the latest lines and over/unders from Caesars, along with some score predictions and a closer look at the gameweek's biggest remaining contests.

Green Bay Packers at Dallas Cowboys

The Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys both dropped their first games of the season in Week 4. The Packers got bowled over by the Philadelphia Eagles ground game, while Dallas was stifled by the New Orleans Saints defense.

If those losses represent the blueprints for beating Green Bay and Dallas, then this game should be one of the most interesting of Week 5. Dallas ranks fifth in rushing offense, averaging 145.5 yards per game on the ground. The Packers rank seventh in scoring defense, with just 17.2 points per game allowed.

This game could come down to the Packers' ability to move the ball without No. 1 wideout Davante Adams. He has been ruled out with a turf toe injury, meaning Green Bay will be missing a guy who has averaged roughly six catches and 95 yards this season.

If Aaron Rodgers is unable to find a reliable top target with Adams out, Dallas will have a good chance of grinding away this game on the ground—much like the Eagles did in Week 4.

Indianapolis Colts at Kansas City Chiefs

While the Packers won't have their top wide receiver, the Indianapolis Colts may have theirs back by Sunday night. However, this isn't Indianapolis' biggest injury concern heading into the game against the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs.

The bigger issue here is that the Colts are going to be without defensive standouts Darius Leonard and Malik Hooker.

Against a Chiefs team that ranks second in both total offense (474.8 yards per game) and scoring (33.8 points), this is a serious problem.

If the Colts are going to have any chance in this game, they are going to have to employ a ball-control strategy. Even if Hilton can go, the goal should be to methodically move the ball on the ground via Marlon Mack and Jordan Wilkins.

If Indianapolis can produce sustained drives, they will have a chance of keeping Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense out of rhythm. If it cannot, then Kansas City has a good chance of running away with this one.

Cleveland Browns at San Francisco 49ers

On Monday night, both the Cleveland Browns and the San Francisco 49ers will have the opportunity to make a statement.

The Browns can show that they are finding their way by knocking off the undefeated 49ers a week after battering the Baltimore Ravens. San Francisco can stay on top of the NFC West and ahead of both the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams with a win.

This one will likely be decided by whichever offense is able to break things open. Both Cleveland and San Francisco boast smothering defenses. The 49ers are allowing just 283.3 yards per game, third-fewest in the league. The Browns rank 11th in total defense (335 yards per game) but have allowed a combined 48 points over their past three games.

Browns receiver Jarvis Landry—who has returned to practice after a concussion—believes that Cleveland's offense can build off of Week 4's performance.

"These guys, we hold each other to a high standard and we hold each other accountable," Landry said, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "I see that. I saw that happening. I think we're on the right track."

If Landry is right, Cleveland will have a good chance of pulling off its second straight upset.
