Report: Lions Plan for Jared Goff to Remain QB1 Despite Loaded 2023 NFL Draft Class

The Detroit Lions don't consider Jared Goff to be a bridge quarterback, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

"As sources have explained, Goff is believed to be their starting QB. Period. Not just until someone else comes along," Rapoport reported.

Goff has impressed in his second season with the Lions after a trade from the Los Angeles Rams. The 28-year-old has 3,022 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 games this year, ranking sixth in the NFL with a 60.5 Total QBR.

After a slow start, the Lions have won four of their last five games with Goff throwing seven touchdown passes and only one interception in this stretch.

Goff's contract becomes more manageable after this season if the Lions wanted to move on from the quarterback. He's owed $52.3 million over the next two years, with just $10 million left in dead cap if he was released in the offseason, per Spotrac.

The Lions would've been left with $41.15 million in dead cap if Goff was released last offseason.

There could also be options to replace Goff in the draft, with the Lions currently holding the No. 4 overall pick from the Rams. They also enter Sunday with the projected No. 15 pick, per Tankathon.

Quarterbacks Bryce Young and C.J. Stroud are both considered top 10 prospects in the 2023 class, per Bleacher Report's Scouting Department, while Anthony Richardson and Will Levis are high-upside options that could be available.

The Lions still seem content to stick with Goff as long as he remains productive.

At 5-7, Detroit has already matched its highest win total in the last four years. The team also has the No. 6 scoring offense in the NFL, with Goff clearly a major part of the success.

It could be enough for the 2016 No. 1 overall draft pick to keep his job heading into 2023 and beyond.

Dan Campbell 'Shocked' Lions Are Betting Favorites over 10-2 Vikings in Week 14

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell was taken aback Friday when told that his team is favored to beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

According to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com, Campbell said: "I really don't even know how to respond to that. I'm shocked by that."

The Lions, who are 5-7 on the season, are listed as two-point home favorites against the 10-2 NFC North rival Vikings by DraftKings Sportsbook.

Detroit has won four of its past five games, and it is coming off a 40-14 home demolition of the Jacksonville Jaguars last week. The Lions were unstoppable on offense with quarterback Jared Goff throwing for 340 yards and two touchdowns, while running backs D'Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams each had a rushing touchdown.

The Vikings have won nine of their past 10 games, including two in a row, however, all but one of their wins this season have been by one score.

That includes last week's 27-22 win over the New York Jets, which required two red-zone stands in the fourth quarter.

In Week 11, the Vikings were perhaps exposed in a 40-3 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, although they have done well to bounce back with two consecutive wins since then.

The Vikings and Lions played once before this season, with Minnesota pulling out a 28-24 home win in Week 3.

Since the Vikings are on the verge of clinching the NFC North and would need an epic collapse to not win the division, their sense of urgency may not be as high as Detroit's.

The Lions are still in the playoff hunt, trailing the Seattle Seahawks by two games for the final wild-card spot in the NFC, and a win over the Vikes would go a long way toward helping their cause.

That is likely playing a role in the surprising point spread, although it is still difficult to believe that a 10-2 team that is largely healthy at the key positions is an underdog against a 5-7 squad.

Lions' Dan Campbell: 4th-Down Call vs. Vikings Will Bother Me 'Until the Day I Die'

A coaching decision in a Week 3 loss to the Minnesota Vikings continues to haunt Detroit Lions coach Dan Campbell.

"Look, it burns me," Campbell told reporters Thursday. "Of course it burns me. That'll be there until the day I die. That's not going to go away."

The Lions led the Vikings 24-21 with 1:14 left in the fourth quarter. On fourth down with four yards to go, Campbell sent Austin Seibert out for a 54-yard field-goal attempt instead of trying for the game-sealing first down.

Seibert missed the kick, and the Vikings needed just three plays to score the go-ahead touchdown. Minnesota closed out the 28-24 win and the Lions suffered the first of five straight losses.

Campbell acknowledged the mistake after the game even before getting questioned by reporters.

"I freakin' regret my decision there at the end," the coach said. "I should have gone for it on fourth down. I told the team that we should've gone for it."

The Lions have turned their season around and enter Week 14's rematch against the Vikings with a 5-7 record, but it's clear Campbell still thinks about that call.

The NFL announced the eight finalists for the Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award on Thursday, and a trio of running backs lead the way.

Aaron Jones of the Green Bay Packers, Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns and Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings were among the players nominated for the award:

The Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award was introduced in 2014 and named after late Pittsburgh Steelers founding owner Art Rooney Sr. Per Packers reporter Wes Hodkiewicz, the award "recognizes players who best demonstrate the qualities of on-field sportsmanship, including fair play, respect for the game and opponents and integrity in competition."

The eight finalists were selected from 32 nominees by a panel of former players made up of Warrick Dunn, Curtis Martin, Leonard Wheeler and Larry Fitzgerald, who chose four finalists from each of the AFC and NFC.

The finalists will be included on the Pro Bowl ballot under the NFL Sportsmanship Award category when NFL players can begin voting later this month. Each team will submit a consensus vote for one of the finalists, and a team cannot vote for its own player.

Fitzgerald was the first honoree to receive the award. Last season's winner was New England Patriots special teamer Matthew Slater.

This year's selection will be announced as part of the NFL Honors show on Feb. 9 prior to Super Bowl LVII. The winner will get to make a $25,000 donation via the NFL Foundation to the charity of his choosing.

Packers GM Brian Gutekunst Believes Jordan Love Is Ready to Be NFL Starting QB

Jordan Love may not have a clear path to the Green Bay Packers' starting quarterback job just yet, but general manager Brian Gutekunst at least believes the 24-year-old is good enough to start in the NFL.

Gutekunst told reporters Monday the team has enough confidence in Love to consider him worthy of No. 1 status.

However, there's still the small matter of Aaron Rodgers being under contract for 2023 and set to count for $31.6 million against the salary cap.

Gutekunst indicated he'd like to see the four-time MVP come back:

"Well, certainly that's an offseason-type kind of decision, but surely, yeah. I mean we want all our guys back. We made a big commitment to him this offseason, so that was obviously something that was really important to us. But like we've talked about in the past, this is something we'll sit down with him after the season and it will be something we do together and move forward that way."

Love didn't look great in his only career start to date. He finished 19-of-34 for 190 yards, one touchdown and one interception as the Packers lost 13-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs last season.

The 2020 first-round pick has performed better when filling in for Rodgers this year, particularly in a 40-33 Week 12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He was 6-of-9 for 113 yards and one touchdown.

Green Bay is 5-8 so far, and its postseason hopes dwindle by the week. One silver lining is that the team might be able to give Love an extended look over the final few weeks because there's little else to play for.

Should that happen and he finishes the campaign strong, the Packers could choose one of two paths. They could pencil Love in as their 2023 starter if Rodgers is willing to be traded or retires altogether. They could also trade him, presumably getting a healthy return while failing to recoup a first-round pick.

Granted, that doesn't mean things won't get messy since the Packers are well aware of how difficult it can be to pass the torch from a franchise legend to the starter-in-waiting.

Matt LaFleur 'Absolutely' Wants Aaron Rodgers to Be Packers' Starting QB in 2023

Amid a disappointing 2022 season for the Green Bay Packers, many are wondering about Aaron Rodgers' future with the team. On Monday, head coach Matt LaFleur made his stance on the situation clear.

When asked if he wants Rodgers to be Green Bay's starting quarterback in 2023, LaFleur told reporters, "Yeah, absolutely. Of course."

Rodgers had said after Sunday's 28-19 road win over the Chicago Bears that his return to the Packers in 2023 would depend on whether there was mutual interest on both sides. The back-to-back reigning NFL MVP turned 39 on Friday and is likely at the tail end of his legendary career.

In March, Green Bay signed Rodgers to a three-year contract extension worth $150.8 million, which keeps him tied to the team through the 2024 season. The 10-time Pro Bowler has thrown for 2,864 yards, 22 touchdowns and nine interceptions through 13 games this year. He threw nine picks combined in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Sunday's victory improved Green Bay to 5-8, but the team sits in third place in the NFC North. While the Packers are not yet eliminated from playoff contention, their chances are slim, and it would take some help to reach the postseason.

Many have wondered if Green Bay should give third-year quarterback Jordan Love an opportunity to start some games down the stretch. The 24-year-old has had limited playing time while backing up Rodgers, but he impressed in a Week 12 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles when he replaced Rodgers in the second half and went 6-of-9 passing for 113 yards and a touchdown.

The Packers are on a bye in Week 14, but it sounds like Rodgers will continue to be under center when the team returns to action against the Los Angeles Rams on Dec. 19 and beyond.

Bears Fans Rip Coaches as Justin Fields, Chicago Collapse vs. Aaron Rodgers, Packers

The more things change, the more they stay the same for the Chicago Bears.

Chicago may finally have its franchise quarterback it has long been searching for in Justin Fields, but it still can't figure out how to beat the Green Bay Packers. Green Bay won the latest edition of the rivalry 28-19 in Sunday's showdown at Soldier Field, improving to 5-8 with the victory.

The Packers, who have won eight in a row and 23 of the last 26 against their rivals, also moved ahead of the Bears for first place on the NFL's all-time wins list at 787.

Yet from Chicago's perspective, a win was well within its grasp. It built a 16-10 halftime lead behind touchdown runs from Fields and David Montgomery, with the former's score going for 55 yards. However, it collapsed in the second half behind some questionable coaching decisions and two late interceptions from Fields.

The coaching staff in particular drew plenty of criticism from Bears fans online:

Chicago was up 16-10 in the third quarter with the opportunity to seize control with 1st-and-goal from the 19-yard line after a penalty but called a run play and two short passes that had no chance at the end zone before settling for a field goal. Then it was up 19-17 on the next possession and moved into scoring position when Fields unleashed a beautiful deep ball to N'Keal Harry.

However, it called another run play on 3rd-and-5 and settled for yet another field-goal attempt, which was blocked.

The Packers ended up taking the lead from there and then clinched the win when Fields threw late interceptions to Jaire Alexander and Keisean Nixon. The Nixon one was a poor throw from a quarterback in desperation mode down two scores in the final minute, but it was easy to blame Equanimeous St. Brown and a questionable receiver group on the first one:

At the end of the day, the Bears still have plenty of question marks even if Fields is tremendous with his legs and completed 20 of 25 passes despite playing with a terrible roster.

The silver lining is they are setting up for a favorable draft pick to address some of those question marks, but this loss will surely linger into the bye week.
