Report: Travis Kelce, Chiefs Agree to Restructured Contract to Create Cap Space

The Kansas City Chiefs and tight end Travis Kelce agreed to a restructured contract Tuesday that will convert his 2022 base salary into a signing bonus.
Field Yates of ESPN reported the move will create an additional $3.5 million in cap space for the Chiefs.
Kansas City began the day with around $3.7 million in cap space. This move will give the front office a little breathing room as it looks to shore up the roster for a potential Super Bowl run.
The Chiefs could be among the contenders for Odell Beckham Jr. once he's cleared to play later this season. Beckham is expected to be out until at least Thanksgiving with a torn ACL suffered during the Los Angeles Rams' Super Bowl LVI win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
Beckham built a strong rapport with the Los Angeles Rams last season and has looked likely to return there once healthy, but the Chiefs still could be a player for the three-time Pro Bowler.
Kansas City could also explore a trade for Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, who could be traded before the Nov. 1 deadline as Carolina looks to rebuild its roster amid a 1-5 start. Clyde Edwards-Helaire has remained a solid option this season, but the Chiefs have not had a truly dynamic player in their backfield since Kareem Hunt's departure midway through the 2018 season.
More than anything, restructuring Kelce's contract gives the Chiefs a little bit of room to explore their options. Perhaps no deal comes to pass, but having that little bit of extra cap space could wind up paying huge dividends.
Patrick Mahomes Says Chiefs' Loss to Bills Will Be 'Good to Learn From'
Oct 17, 2022

Patrick Mahomes tried to remain positive following the Kansas City Chiefs' 24-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.
"It’ll be good to learn from," the Chiefs star told reporters. "But right now it stinks for sure."
He added he's hopeful of seeing the Bills again down the line:
#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: "We lost this time, but hopefully we'll have another chance to battle back and play them in the playoffs."
We might only be into Week 6 of the 2022 NFL season, but Sunday's meeting carried the kind of hype that's typically reserved for a clash between conference rivals near the end of the year.
there are still 12 weeks left in the season and the playoffs are a month long, that's enough time for the NFL to arrange a best-of-15 or so Bills-Chiefs series to determine who gets the AFC spot in the Super Bowl
The battle for the AFC is shaping up to be a two-horse race, and Buffalo drew first blood by going on the road and avenging their 2021 postseason loss to the Chiefs.
Kansas City, a franchise that has made the AFC title game in four straight years, won't be reaching for the panic button.
It wasn't as if Andy Reid's squad was out of Sunday's matchup from start to finish, either. The defense allowed 443 yards to Josh Allen and the Bills offense, yet Patrick Mahomes still had an opportunity to engineer a game-winning drive.
The Chiefs got the ball back with 1:04 on the clock, which seemed to be more than enough time for the 2018 MVP. Instead, he threw a backbreaking interception to Taron Johnson on the second play.
The Bills now have the inside track to win the conference, and a head-to-head victory over the Chiefs could prove very important when the dust settles on the regular season.
But it might be another toss-up if a playoff rematch is on the cards in a few months.
NFL Exec: Sean Payton 'Really Wants' Head Coach Job with Justin Herbert, Chargers
Oct 15, 2022

If Brandon Staley is out as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers following the 2022 season, the franchise could land one of the best coaches in football as his replacement.
A longtime NFL personnel executive told Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post that he believes former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton "really wants" to coach Justin Herbert and the Chargers:
“[Dean] Spanos doesn’t like to pay his coaches, but once your quarterback starts making $50 million a year, you’re really going to be cheap about your head coach? Sean loves living in Southern California. You’ve got Herbert and some other blue chip players. That’s the fit.”
Payton, who is working for Fox Sports this season after stepping down as head coach of the Saints in January, said during an appearance on the NewOrleans.Football podcast last month that he would be open to returning to an NFL sideline if the "right situation presented itself."
"If the right situation presented itself, I would definitely be interested. And there's no utopia, if you will, when it comes to teams, but if I felt like it was the right situation, I would have an interest in that. That all being said, that could come in a year, that could come in two years."
When asked what he would be looking for in a franchise to coach, Payton said that "the most important element is functional ownership [and] front office." He added that the "opportunity to win consistently and the willingness to build the correct culture" would also factor into his decision.
Payton, who coached in New Orleans for 15 seasons, has two years remaining on his contract with the Saints after the 2022 season. If he were to return to coaching in 2023, New Orleans would need to be compensated.
Payton led the Saints to a 152-89 record from 2006-2021 and also led the team to seven NFC South division titles and nine playoff appearances, including a Super Bowl title in 2010. He also won Coach of the Year during the 2006 campaign.
The Chargers hired Staley to replace Anthony Lynn ahead of the 2021 campaign. He led the Bolts to a 9-8 record in his first season at the helm and they missed the playoffs for the third straight season.
This season, Staley and the Chargers are second in the AFC West with a 3-2 record. Depending on where they finish, Staley could be out after just two seasons because of his lack of success with a talented roster that includes Herbert, Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler and more.
Broncos' Russell Wilson on Criticism: I Am Built for 'Good Times' and 'Tough Times'
Oct 13, 2022
DENVER, CO - OCTOBER 06: Russell Wilson #3 of the Denver Broncos reacts after the play against the Indianapolis Colts at Empower Field at Mile High on October 6, 2022 in Denver, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images)
To say the start of Russell Wilson's first season with the Denver Broncos hasn't gone as planned would be quite the understatement, but he is keeping an optimistic mindset.
"I am built for the good times and the tough times," he told reporters Thursday.
The Broncos are 2-3 through five games, with all three losses coming by single digits.
While the close margins of defeat suggest Denver isn't far away from being a contender, the offense has scored fewer than 17 points in four of the five contests. Wilson and the offense were booed a number of times in Denver during last Thursday's loss to the Indianapolis Colts as the unit scored a mere nine points in an overtime game.
Health was apparently an issue, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the 33-year-old has been playing with a partially torn lat near his right shoulder that he suffered in the Week 4 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
NFL Media's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported Wilson received a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection on Friday in an effort to return to health without missing significant time.
"Wilson's hope, sources say, is that the injection—coupled with round-the-clock treatment from his personal medical team—will expedite the healing process," they wrote. "It's unclear, based on precedent and discussions with experts, whether the injection will improve his situation."
Optimism was high in Denver at the start of the season with the addition of Wilson.
After all, he is likely a future Hall of Famer with a resume that includes a Super Bowl title, nine Pro Bowl selections and four seasons with more than 4,000 passing yards. He seemed to be just the quarterback to help the Broncos compete with Patrick Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs and Justin Herbert's Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC West.
Yet he is now dealing with health concerns and poor performance on the field after having completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 1,254 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions through five games.
Wilson has never completed worse than 61.3 percent of his passes in a season during his 11 seasons.
To hear him say it, he is built for adversity like what he and the Broncos are facing this season. Perhaps a turnaround begins with Monday Night Football when they play at the Chargers.
Raiders' Darren Waller Ruled Out vs. Chiefs After Suffering Hamstring Injury

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller was ruled out for the remainder of Monday night's matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs due to a hamstring injury.
It's the same injury that caused him to miss time during training camp in August, though he was healthy enough to appear in the team's first four games this season.
The 30-year-old is coming off an injury-plagued 2021 campaign that limited him to just 11 games. When he was healthy, though, he was one of Derek Carr's top targets, catching 55 passes for 665 yards and two touchdowns.
During his last fully healthy season in 2020, Waller caught 107 passes for 1,196 yards and nine touchdowns in 16 games en route to a Pro Bowl selection.
Coming into Monday night, Waller had caught 16 passes for 175 yards and a touchdown. He has played a big role in the passing game alongside Davante Adams and Hunter Renfrow.
If Waller misses any time this season, the Raiders will likely turn to fourth-year receiver Foster Moreau at tight end. He was solid in Waller's absence last season, catching 22 passes for 248 yards and one touchdown in the six games Waller was sidelined.
However, Moreau has been out since Week 4 with a knee injury, leaving Jesper Horstead as the only active tight end.
The Raiders will need Waller to remain healthy if they intend to challenge the likes of the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers for the division crown.
Report: Broncos' Russell Wilson Got Injection to Relieve Pain from Shoulder Injury
Oct 8, 2022

Denver Broncos star Russell Wilson received a platelet-rich plasma injection in Los Angeles on Friday to relieve pain from an injury in his throwing shoulder, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Wilson is dealing with a partially torn lat muscle.
"Wilson's hope, sources say, is that the injection—coupled with round-the-clock treatment from his personal medical team—will expedite the healing process," Rapoport and Pelissero wrote. "It's unclear, based on precedent and discussions with experts, whether the injection will improve his situation."
Dak Prescott had a similar injury and took a few weeks off in camp to make it go away. Russell Wilson will play through it. But certainly something to watch. https://t.co/q15bGfe5bL
Wilson suffered the shoulder injury in a Week 4 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Broncos have been unable to identify a true long-term solution at quarterback following John Elway's retirement.
Peyton Manning's four years in Denver culminated with the franchise's best spell in the post-Elway era, and the team effectively looked to replicate that blueprint with the acquisition of Wilson.
The nine-time Pro Bowler was coming off a disappointing 2021 season by his usual standards, though. He threw for 3,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions as the Seattle Seahawks finished with a losing record for the first time since he arrived in 2012.
Wilson also missed three games after undergoing surgery on his right middle finger.
Once Patrick Mahomes won an MVP in his first season as a starter in 2018, the road to the playoffs in the AFC West was going to be tough. The Kansas City Chiefs were poised to be a contender for a long time to come.
Justin Herbert's emergence with the Los Angeles Chargers made the challenge of claiming a postseason berth more difficult.
Acquiring Wilson was both a sign of the Broncos' intent and a reflection of how loaded their division is. To that end, his health and performance will be critical toward Denver ending a six-year postseason drought.
Wilson has struggled through the first five weeks of the season, 59.4 percent of his passes for 1,254 yards and four touchdowns against three interceptions. The Broncos are 2-3 and third in the AFC West behind the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers.
Russell Wilson $245M Contract Mocked by NFL Twitter During Broncos' OT Loss to Colts

When the Denver Broncos acquired quarterback Russell Wilson in a blockbuster trade and then signed him to a $245 million contract extension with $165 million guaranteed, the team surely expected great things from its offense.
Unfortunately, things just have not worked out the way they hoped.
The Broncos lost an abysmal game against the Indianapolis Colts 12-9 in overtime at Mile High Stadium on Thursday Night Football. In a game absent of offense, Wilson finished with 274 yards and two interceptions on 21-of-39 passing. He added 22 rushing yards on four carries. His second interception was particularly brutal, as it occurred late in the fourth quarter when Denver was in the red zone on the verge of putting the game away.
The play we're seeing from Wilson this season is a far cry from the form he displayed for 10 years with the Seattle Seahawks.
The nine-time Pro Bowl selection has not gotten used to his new surroundings, as he noticeably lacks chemistry with receivers Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy despite working together all offseason. Wilson also appears to have a disconnect with Broncos first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett.
NFL Twitter unloaded on Wilson and the Broncos offense for their continued struggles on Thursday.
If only the #Broncos followed the #Walmart slogan when it came to the Russell Wilson contract negotiations. Save money, live better.
This idea that the Broncos OL still don’t have Russell Wilson’s cadences and rhythms down in week 5 is insane to me. You’ve been practicing and playing with him for what, 5 months now? He’s a veteran QB it’s not like his cadence sucks or isn’t consistent. I don’t get it.
Good news: Broncos offense will be fine. Bad news: It'll be in 2023. After a head coaching/personnel change. I always thought this year would be rough as they adjust to Russell Wilson. Next year it'll be better.
With 11:42 remaining in 2Q, after Russell Wilson pass is not in same area code of receiver due to miscommunication, message to Broncos offense is clear from crowd: boo!
Thank goodness the Bears had their MASSIVE offer for Russell Wilson rejected by the Seahawks. Multiple first round picks, additional picks and players. 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎
After that Russell Wilson interception, the Broncos are now 0-3 in the red zone tonight and have scored a TD on just 23% of their red zone drives this season.
That is the worst mark by any team through 5 games since 2010 (Carolina - 22%, Washington - 23%).
After landing Wilson, the Broncos were expected to compete for a division title in the AFC West. The performance Denver put forth against Indianapolis indicated otherwise, as the team failed to establish any momentum on offense throughout the night.
It's still early, but it's worth questioning whether Wilson is a good fit with the Broncos. Denver (2-3) will have some extra time to figure things out before returning to action in another primetime matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers (2-2) on Oct. 17 on Monday Night Football.
NFL Rumors: Broncos Aren't 'Too Concerned' with Russell Wilson Despite Slow Start
Oct 5, 2022

Russell Wilson hasn't lived up to expectations since joining the Denver Broncos, but "the team isn't too concerned at the moment," according to ESPN's Jeff Legwold.
Legwold added that "alarms aren't sounding" despite the slow start since his trade from the Seattle Seahawks.
Denver is 2-2, although it's the defense that's been leading the way. The squad ranks fifth in the NFL in points allowed but just 30th in points scored while averaging just 16.5 points per game.
Wilson has just four touchdown passes in four games, with a 3.1 touchdown rate that would be the worst of his 11-year career over a full season.
Though Wilson has mostly avoided mistakes, his 44.9 total QBR ranks just 21st in the NFL.
There is still plenty to build on, including the quarterback's two fourth-quarter comebacks this season, which have helped keep the Broncos competitive despite Wilson's struggles in a new system.
The nine-time Pro Bowler also has developed impressive chemistry with Courtland Sutton, who is averaging 85.8 receiving yards per game this season. If he can get in step with Jerry Jeudy as well, the passing attack could truly take off.
Fantasy managers might have already given up on Wilson, but the Broncos are clearly willing to remain patient with the talented player.
Denver will look to turn things around Thursday night against the Indianapolis Colts.
Davante Adams Talks Raiders' Win, Derek Carr, Super Bowl and More in B/R Interview
Oct 4, 2022
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - OCTOBER 02: Davante Adams #17 of the Las Vegas Raiders runs against the Denver Broncos during the second half of a game at Allegiant Stadium on October 02, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Michael Owens/Getty Images)
Most wide receivers would be thrilled with a four-game start to the season that included three touchdown catches and two games of more than 100 receiving yards.
Most wide receivers aren't Davante Adams.
"There's been some good things to build on, but I think I have even higher standards than what's been put out there," the Las Vegas Raiders star told Bleacher Report. "Especially the two games in between. That's never how we want to come out of games, regardless of how the team is doing."
Standards don't get much higher than the ones Adams established as arguably the top wide receiver in the league during his first eight seasons with the Green Bay Packers as a five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro who went over 1,300 receiving yards in three of the last four years and led the league with 18 touchdown catches in 2020.
Yet his start with the Raiders was somewhat up-and-down with touchdowns in each of his first three games but just two catches for 12 yards in an overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2 and five catches for 36 yards in the Week 3 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
Adams bounced back in a major way Sunday with nine catches for 101 yards in the win over the Denver Broncos, marking his second time over the century mark after posting 141 yards in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Chargers.
"I think that was a big thing that we did a better job of this week was finding a way to allow me to have an impact on the game," he said. "Yeah, they are doing certain things with double-teams, triples, and doing a lot of stuff to take me away, but it's not the first time I've been exposed to that type of coverage. We're not going to let that dictate whether or not I'm able to make an impact on the game. That's what you saw this past Sunday. We had a better way to attack some of the stuff that they were doing and capitalized on those opportunities."
What a catch by Davante Adams! His first TD in the Silver and Black 🔥
Finding a way to beat those double- and triple-teams will be key if the Raiders are going to live up to the elevated expectations that were put in place as soon as they traded for the game-changing wide receiver.
After all, they made the playoffs last season at 10-7 and lost a heartbreaker by seven points to the eventual AFC-champion Cincinnati Bengals. They figured to only improve with the addition of Adams, which made the 0-3 start to the 2022 campaign that much more surprising.
Yet the losses to the Chargers, Cardinals and Titans were all by one score and came by a combined 13 points, with the Arizona one happening in overtime after Las Vegas lost a 20-point lead.
It's not a stretch to suggest the team could be in much better position if a handful of plays unfolded differently, and Adams had a glass-half-full approach to the difficult start.
"Each game has given us confidence," he said. "They've all been one-score games. To be competitive at the end of these games and have them literally come down to the last play or a last sequence, that says a lot because we haven't played anything close to our standard of ball. Against three solid opponents, we had opportunities. The Arizona game we put ourselves in a great position in the first half being up 20-0, but that taught us a lesson and will ultimately contribute to us establishing our identity and knowing how to close out games and play a full 60 minutes."
The Raiders closed out Sunday's 32-23 victory over the Broncos and never trailed after a Josh Jacobs touchdown run early in the second quarter.
"We have achieved our standard," Adams said when asked what his immediate reaction was when the clock hit zero on the team's first win.
"Everything is still out in front of us even though it wasn't the most ideal start, especially given the type of team we have," he continued while looking ahead to a showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. "When we got our win, it was definitely a little bit of a monkey off our back. But now we have to turn back around because we've got another great team to go out there and try to get a win against on the road. It's never going to be easy, but it's definitely good to check that one off so we can start rattling them off. That's the goal."
The goal of reaching the Super Bowl is still very much on the table, and some fans who are brave enough to wash their lucky jerseys could be joining him at the sport's biggest stage.
That's because Adams partnered with Tide in an effort to fight back against the idea that fans shouldn't wash their lucky jerseys. Fans who wash their jerseys with Tide Hygienic Clean pods will have the opportunity to win memorabilia or even Super Bowl tickets.
"This was a great opportunity to partner with Tide to give away signed jerseys, cleats and Super Bowl tickets in exchange for fans washing their lucky jerseys," Adams said. "We do acknowledge that it's not something that's easy to do, but using Tide hygienic pods is one of the easiest ways to be able to do this and feel good about it. All your superstitions and everything that's linked to that jersey will be intact, you'll just come out with a clean jersey. From personal experience, I can validate that."
While he believes in washing lucky jerseys, the five-time Pro Bowler does have some superstitions such as wearing the same style of socks under his Jordan cleats and making sure he's wearing his visor and wristband on game days.
He said the visor is darker in Las Vegas than it was in Green Bay to deal with the sun, but one thing that wasn't a major transition in the move was reconnecting with quarterback Derek Carr.
All Adams did in 2012 and 2013 while catching passes from Carr at Fresno State was post a combined 233 catches for 3,031 yards and 38 touchdowns, so chemistry didn't figure to be an issue when the college teammates reunited at the NFL level.
There have been some ups and downs, though, as Carr, who is a three-time Pro Bowler who threw for more than 4,000 yards in each of the last four seasons, attempts to navigate getting the ball to the best player while also understanding he can't force feed it into the constant double coverage Adams faces.
"With the coverage part, we still have to make strides with that and get used to playing with each other when they do things to prevent me from having an impact on the game," Adams said. "But it's been like riding a bike as far as our connection and especially our friendship and getting together and being able to make that feel like old times. I've definitely enjoyed being back on the field with Derek."
They will be on the field together in the latest edition of one of the league's fiercest rivalries when the Raiders face the Chiefs on Monday with an opportunity to make up some ground in the AFC West.
Playing in the hostile environment that is Kansas City won't make the job any easier, but Adams isn't focused on the rivalry aspect of the upcoming contest.
"That's more of the fans' thing," he said. "As far as the players, if you have the right mentality, then every single game should feel like a rivalry game. And that's how I approach it, I don't take any opponent lighter than any other. Obviously they have a really good team and there's history there, but for me personally, and I know some of my teammates as well, we're just focused on going out to improve our record."
Improving their record in Kansas City on a national stage would be an ideal way for the Raiders to announce to the rest of the NFL that they put their slow start behind them and are ready to challenge for a Lombardi Trophy with one of the league's top playmakers leading the way.
Broncos' Russell Wilson 'Super Confident' in Status for Week 5 amid Shoulder Injury
Oct 4, 2022

Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson is a little banged up heading into Week 5, but he believes he'll be just fine for the Thursday Night Football matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.
Wilson, who was limited in Tuesday's walkthrough because of a shoulder injury, told reporters he's "super confident" that he'll play on Thursday "with no limitations."
Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett said Monday that Wilson was "dinged up" in the team's 32-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. While Denver didn't practice Monday, Wilson was among the players listed as limited on the team's estimated injury report. However, Hackett added that the team expects Wilson to be able to play Thursday.
Wilson is coming off one of his better games in a Broncos uniform, throwing for 237 yards and two touchdowns and running for another score in the loss to the Raiders. But he was also sacked three times, which brings his season total to 12 through four games.
After being acquired in a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson is still getting acclimated to his surroundings. The 33-year-old has thrown for 980 yards, four touchdowns and an interception while completing 61.1 percent of his passes. There have been times when it appeared Wilson wasn't on the same page with Hackett, who is in his first year as Broncos head coach.
Denver needs Wilson to be at his best if it hopes to keep pace in the AFC West. The Broncos already lost starting running back Javonte Williams to a season-ending torn ACL and LCL, dealing a major blow to their offense. The team will likely be forced to rely on Wilson and the passing attack.
