Seahawks Rumors: Jamal Adams Doesn't Need Surgery for Broken Finger Injury

Seattle Seahawks safety Jamal Adams does not need surgery to repair his broken middle finger on his left hand, according to Gregg Bell of the News Tribune.

After suffering the injury in practice last Wednesday and seeing a hand specialist in Dallas over the weekend, Adams is expected to rejoin the team Monday.

The broken finger was one that was already surgically repaired this offseason. He accidentally got it stuck in a face mask during his first practice of training camp on Wednesday, per Bell.

The Seahawks have reportedly been confident he can return before long without any concern about missing the start of the regular season.

"Just a freak accident," a source told Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. "It's going to be fine."

Injuries are still a concern when it involves Adams after he has been limited to 12 games in each of his two seasons with Seattle.

The three-time Pro Bowler dealt with a groin injury that cost him four games in 2020, while a shoulder injury cost him five games in 2021. The offseason hand injury has also become an issue.

It's certainly not what you want from one of the highest-paid players in the NFL at his position. Adams' average salary of $17.6 million per year ranks second among safeties behind only Minkah Fitzpatrick, per Spotrac.

Adams has been an elite player for Seattle when healthy, tallying 9.5 sacks in 2020 while being named second-team All-Pro. Last year, he ranked fourth on the team with 87 tackles.

If he is unavailable, backup Josh Jones will have big shoes to fill.

Linebacker Reuben Foster reportedly has a workout with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday as he seeks a return to the NFL, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The 28-year-old spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, last appearing in a game in 2018.

He joined the Washington Commanders the next season but was carted off the field during an offseason workout, tearing his ACL while suffering additional damage. There was also reportedly artery damage in his leg from the May 2019 injury.

Foster's career had also been affected by off-field matters, including a November 2018 arrest on a domestic violence charge. Earlier that year, he was also charged with felonies for domestic violence, making criminal threats and weapons possession after an accusation of assaulting an ex-girlfriend, though the first two charges were later dropped.

The 49ers released him that November, while Washington was the only team to put in a waiver claim.

Foster was later fined two game checks but not suspended by the NFL following an investigation.

The former Alabama star had high expectations entering the league after winning the Dick Butkus Award as the best linebacker in college football. He was the leading tackler for the Crimson Tide in 2016, a defense that led FBS in points allowed per game (13.0).

San Francisco drafted Foster with the No. 31 pick in 2017 and he seemed like a steal right away, tallying 72 tackles in 10 games as a rookie. He finished third in voting for Defensive Rookie of the Year.

Foster is now looking for a fresh start with Seattle, a team that ranked 28th in total yards allowed last season. The squad also released longtime linebacker Bobby Wagner this offseason, creating a need in the middle of the defense.

DK Metcalf Says He 'Bluffed' About Staying With Seahawks During Contract Talks

Seahawks wide receiver D.K. Metcalf signed a three-year, $72 million extension with the franchise this week, and he admitted that he "bluffed" about staying in Seattle during contract negotiations.

"No because ... something was going to get done," Metcalf said when asked if it was any more stressful watching other top receivers get paid, per ESPN's Brady Henderson. "It was going to be here ... as much as I bluffed to John [Schneider]. Just to let y'all know, I wanted to be here. I wanted to play here and I'm just glad that we got something done."

Metcalf was the latest wide receiver to sign a lucrative contract extension this summer, joining A.J. Brown, Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams. His $24 million per year salary is tied for sixth among wide receivers in the NFL with Buffalo Bills star Stefon Diggs.

Hill makes most annually at $30 million per year, while Adams makes $28 million per year. Brown's yearly salary worth $25 million ranks fifth among wide receivers in the NFL.

While the Seahawks are in an offensive rebuild with the departure of star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, locking up Metcalf was one of the team's priorities this summer.

"We knew he was a guy that was going to be here and that we had to have here for a long time in order for us to provide for the 12s and a championship team," Schneider said Friday, according to John Boyle of the team website.

Schneider added that negotiations with Metcalf began during the NFL Combine in April. Those discussions continued into the start of training camp, and the star wide receiver skipped mandatory minicamp in June, which he said was difficult.

The 24-year-old, who has never missed a game, has been a staple in the Seattle offense since being selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft.

During his rookie season, he caught 58 passes for 900 yards and seven touchdowns in 16 games. He followed that up with 83 catches for 1,303 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 games during the 2020 campaign en route to a Pro Bowl selection.

Last season, he caught 75 passes for 967 yards and 12 scores in 17 games.

Metcalf is expected to lead the receiving group once again in 2022 alongside Tyler Lockett and Freddie Swain. However, he'll need to work on developing a connection with new quarterback Drew Lock, provided he wins the starting job over Geno Smith.

Jamal Adams Expected to Return to Seahawks Practice in Cast Despite Finger Injury

Seattle Seahawks strong safety Jamal Adams suffered a broken middle finger on his left hand Wednesday, but he's expected to return to training camp in early August and should be good to go for the beginning of the regular season on Sept. 12 against the Denver Broncos.

"Just a freak accident," a source told Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. "It’s going to be fine."

Per Jude, the injury happened after Adams accidentally got his finger twisted in a teammate's face mask during the team's Wednesday practice.

After practice, Adams flew back to Dallas to have his surgeon evaluate the middle finger. The good news is that the bone should heal within the next few weeks. Adams can opt to have surgery, but if he does, it would be after this season.

It's also presumed that Adams will wear a club on his left hand during practices and a "specially designed cast" over the finger when he plays during the regular season, per Jude.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also confirmed the plan:

This is a separate and new issue from his previously reported hand and finger issues. Adams told reporters in June that he had surgery to fuse the two middle fingers on his left hand and discussed how it's affected him:

"Been going through that for two years now. I mean, my first year when I got here, dislocated my ring finger probably about 10 times and the other one, probably about 12. So I’ve been dealing with that. I didn’t really say much. Let everybody talk about it, whatever. But you know, it’s good now and they’re in trouble. ... I played with one arm damn near for two years. But that’s no excuse. At the end of the day it was tape it up. Let’s go."

That's in addition to a twice-torn labrum, which landed him on injured reserve last season.

The 26-year-old has played five NFL seasons: three with the New York Jets and two in Seattle. In 2020, the ex-LSU star e set a record for the most sacks (9.5) by a defensive back despite missing four games.

He amassed 87 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions in 12 games in 2021.

Projecting Deebo Samuel's Contract After DK Metcalf's Seahawks Deal

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel established himself as one of the best at his position last season, and he's hoping to get paid as such.

Samuel has reported to training camp but is not practicing while he awaits a new deal. San Francisco is reportedly optimistic that a deal will get done soon, but it likely didn't help matters that he watched yet another one of his counterparts get paid before him Thursday.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Seattle Seahawks signed wideout DK Metcalf to a three-year extension worth $72 million with $58.2 million guaranteed. He reportedly received a $30 million signing bonus, which is the highest ever for a wide receiver.

Metcalf's deal makes him one of the highest-paid receivers in the league and puts him in company with the many wideouts to earn major paydays this offseason.

So what does Metcalf's deal mean for Samuel? Both of them were second-round picks in 2019 with Samuel being selected at No. 36, 18 picks before Metcalf. They both have made similar impacts in their first three seasons, as Metcalf was named to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and earned second-team All-Pro honors that year, while Samuel garnered a Pro Bowl selection and first-team All-Pro honors last season.

While Metcalf's receiving production exceeds Samuel's, the latter has a versatility that is unmatched. San Francisco uses Samuel in a variety of ways, making him one of the more dangerous weapons in the NFL. He has 11 career rushing touchdowns, recording eight in 2021.

Based on Samuel's value and usage as a receiver-running back hybrid, negotiations for an extension can be tricky. The 26-year-old also has an extensive injury history, having never played a full season in his first three years.

It can be expected that Samuel's extension will compare favorably to Metcalf's, but San Francisco likely will include some protection for itself in a new deal. Samuel will likely receive similar guaranteed money and a similar average annual value, with possibly another year added to the deal. An extension in the range of four years and $100 million could be enough to entice Samuel to sign.

San Francisco should hope to get a deal done soon. The team is turning to second-year quarterback Trey Lance as its starter this season, so he will need all the weapons he can get. The 49ers will have their first padded practice Monday, so having Samuel present and happy with a new deal will go a long way toward San Francisco's preparations for the upcoming year.

Seahawks' Updated Salary Cap for 2022 After DK Metcalf's $72M Contract

With quarterback Russell Wilson now on the Denver Broncos, wide receiver DK Metcalf is the face of the Seattle Seahawks.

And it seems it will be that way for the foreseeable future.

On Thursday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Metcalf signed a three-year, $72 million contract extension. The deal includes $58.2 million in guarantees and a $30 million signing bonus, the highest ever for a wideout.

Metcalf can become a free agent at 27, so another megadeal may eventually be in store.

The deal will be added to an adjusted salary cap that Spotrac noted was $217.2 million.

That Metcalf received such a lucrative offer comes as no surprise, as it's been an offseason of such deals for the wide receiver position, with Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, A.J. Brown and Terry McLaurin among those who have inked massive contracts.

Metcalf hasn't missed a game in three seasons, registering 900 receiving yards as a rookie and following it up with a Pro Bowl 2020 campaign with 83 catches for 1,303 yards and 10 touchdowns.

He and the team took a step back in 2021 (75 catches for 967 yards and 12 touchdowns), but the Ole Miss product figures to be crucial in 2022 with Geno Smith or Drew Lock under center and who knows what in the years ahead.

Seahawks' Jamal Adams to Miss Time With with Hand Injury; No Timetable for Return

Seattle Seahawks strong safety Jamal Adams will miss an undetermined amount of time because of a hand issue.

Michael-Shawn Dugar of The Athletic relayed the news from Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll, who revealed it to reporters at training camp Thursday:

Adams, 26, is entering his sixth NFL season. He amassed 87 tackles, five pass breakups and two interceptions in 12 games last year. The three-time Pro Bowler set an NFL record in 2020 with nine-and-a-half sacks, the most all-time by a defensive back.

Adams has suffered numerous injuries over the past three years that have led to missed time. A sprained left ankle sidelined him for two games in 2019, a groin strain kept him out for four more in 2020, and a torn labrum ended Adams' campaign after 12 games in 2021.

However, those ailments don't account for whatever else Adams played through to suit up as much as he could on a weekly basis. In June, it was revealed that Adams was dealing with hand and finger issues.

The star safety said he had surgery to fuse the two middle fingers on his left hand. He also stated he wouldn't be able to completely straighten those fingers ever again and told reporters how those injuries have inhibited him during this recent stretch:

"Been going through that for two years now. I mean, my first year when I got here, dislocated my ring finger probably about 10 times and the other one, probably about 12. So I’ve been dealing with that. I didn’t really say much. Let everybody talk about it, whatever. But you know, it’s good now and they’re in trouble. ... I played with one arm damn near for two years. But that’s no excuse. At the end of the day it was tape it up. Let’s go."

In late June, Adams believed he would be full speed for training camp, per ESPN's Brady Henderson. However, he'll now have to step away to address this setback with his hand.

NFL Rumors: DK Metcalf Holding In at Seahawks Training Camp amid Contract Talks

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf is set for unrestricted free agency after the 2022 campaign, and he reportedly isn't practicing at the start of training camp with his contract status up in the air.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Metcalf was present at training camp but not practicing, just like Deebo Samuel of the San Francisco 49ers and Derwin James Jr. of the Los Angeles Chargers as they attempt to settle "unresolved contract issues."

There has been no shortage of developments at the wide receiver position this offseason with Davante Adams signing a five-year, $141.3 million contract with the Las Vegas Raiders after they landed him in a trade with the Green Bay Packers and Tyreek Hill inking a four-year, $120 million extension with the Miami Dolphins after they acquired him from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Elsewhere, A.J. Brown signed a four-year extension worth $100 million with the Philadelphia Eagles after the Tennessee Titans traded him, and Terry McLaurin agreed to a three-year, $71 million extension with the Washington Commanders.

Those moves surely caught the attention of Metcalf, and his status has become one of the biggest storylines of Seattle's camp.

His health may also be a factor with the regular season still more than a month away.

"Metcalf had foot surgery this offseason, and that would be one reason for the team to ease him into a full workload early in camp," Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk wrote Wednesday. "Metcalf is also in the final year of his contract and looking for an extension that would keep him in Seattle for years to come, so the decision not to practice may not be solely related to caution about the condition of his foot."

While expectations may be lower for the Seahawks after they traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos this offseason, Metcalf's availability would greatly improve their chances of contending in the NFC West.

The 2020 Pro Bowler made 75 catches for 967 yards and 12 touchdowns a season ago and has never missed a game in his three years in the league.

He is also just 24 years old and figures to be a franchise cornerstone if he and the Seahawks come to terms on a contract extension.

DK Metcalf Reportedly Attending Seahawks Training Camp amid New Contract Talks

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf has reported to training camp amid contract negotiations, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson.

"It's unclear whether Metcalf will practice with the team, but his appearance at camp can be considered a positive," Fowler wrote.

The news of Metcalf reporting to training camp comes after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that he was in talks with the Seahawks for a new contract.

"DK stayed away for most of the offseason for Seattle, rehabbing that foot injury," Rapaport said. "But clearly, clearly Seattle rebuffed all offers to potentially trade him. They want to get him paid as well."

Metcalf is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is eligible to receive a significant extension that should put him among the NFL's highest-paid wide receivers.

He likely won't receive a deal similar to Davante Adams (five years, $140 million) and Tyreek Hill (four years, $120 million). However, he could receive something similar to A.J. Brown (four years, $100 million).

The 24-year-old was selected by the Seahawks in the second round of the 2019 NFL draft and impressed from the start. He played every game during his rookie season, catching 58 passes for 900 yards and seven touchdowns.

His best season came in 2020, when he caught 83 passes for 1,303 yards and 10 touchdowns in 16 games. He followed that up with 75 catches for 963 yards and 12 touchdowns in 17 games last season.

It's not necessarily surprising that Metcalf reported to training camp this week. With Russell Wilson now playing for the Denver Broncos, he needs to develop some chemistry with new quarterback Drew Lock.

While Metcalf is expected to lead the way in 2022, Seattle also has Tyler Lockett and Freddie Swain out wide, and Noah Fant at tight end.

Seahawks' Chris Carson Reportedly to Retire from NFL Because of Neck Injury

Seattle Seahawks running back Chris Carson will reportedly retire from the NFL due to a neck injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"SEA will officially release him with a failed physical designation," Rapoport wrote. "Under the CBA, that allows Carson to receive several million in injury protection benefits. Seattle does right by him."

The 27-year-old had spent his entire five-year career in Seattle after being selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL draft out of Oklahoma State. In 49 career games, Carson rushed for 3,502 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also caught 107 passes for 804 yards and seven scores.

Carson appeared in just four games during his 2017 rookie season before fracturing his leg. He went on to have back-to-back 1,000-plus-yard rushing seasons in 2018 and 2019. He rushed for 1,151 yards and nine scores in 2018 and 1,230 yards and seven scores in 2019.

Carson's production dropped off in 2020 as he rushed for 681 yards and five scores. He then appeared in just four games during the 2021 campaign, rushing for 232 yards and three scores, before undergoing season-ending neck surgery.

Last month, Carson told told Jonathan Adams of Heavy.com that he did not have a timeline to return from his neck surgery and that he didn't have plans to retire.

"Oh, we still going right now," Carson said. "I see myself playing until I feel like stopping. My mindset is never to give up. So, I'm staying positive like I said, and continue to fight and get back onto the field."

With Carson now set to retire, the Seahawks can rely on Rashaad Penny, Kenneth Walker III and DeeJay Dallas at running back. Penny led the team in rushing last season with 749 yards and six touchdowns.

Walker was selected in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft out of Michigan State. He had a breakout 2021 campaign with the Spartans, rushing for 1,636 yards and 18 touchdowns in 12 games.

Dallas, meanwhile, has spent the last two seasons in Seattle. He rushed for 138 yards and two scores in 2021.
