The NFC West race isn't over yet.

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Arizona Cardinals 30-23 in Monday's divisional showdown at State Farm Stadium. Matthew Stafford was brilliant and led the way for the victors, who improved to 9-4 with their second straight win.

Arizona is still in first place but fell to 10-3 despite two touchdowns from James Conner. It is now tied with the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the race for the NFC's only first-round bye.

It had an opportunity to tie the game and force overtime after recovering an onside kick in the final minute, but time expired after Kyler Murray was sacked by Aaron Donald.

Notable Player Stats

  • Matthew Stafford, QB, LA: 23-of-30 passing for 287 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
  • Cooper Kupp, WR, LA: 13 catches for 123 yards, 1 TD
  • Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LA: 6 catches for 77 yards, 1 TD
  • Van Jefferson, WR, LA: 2 catches for 58 yards, 1 TD
  • Kyler Murray, QB, AZ: 32-of-49 passing for 383 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs; 7 carries for 61 yards
  • James Conner, RB, AZ: 13 carries for 31 yards, 2 TDs; 9 catches for 94 yards

Matthew Stafford Unstoppable in Road Win

Battling the loaded Cardinals is a daunting enough task at full strength, which made it all the more concerning for the Rams when ESPN's Adam Schefter noted before the game that cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Tyler Higbee, running back Darrell Henderson Jr, offensive lineman Rob Havenstein and cornerback Dont'e Deayon were all on the Reserve/COVID list.

Yet it was the visitors who set the tone at times in the first half with multiple Matt Gay field goals, one of which was from 55 yards out, and a vintage performance from Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham consistently broke free with much of the defense's attention on Cooper Kupp and hauled in the game's first touchdown while finding success against the Arizona secondary. He looked far more explosive than he did during his time with the Cleveland Browns earlier this season and gave Los Angeles a dangerous one-two punch at wide receiver.

Throw in Sony Michel finding success between the tackles in place of Henderson, and the shorthanded Rams entered the second half deadlocked against the Super Bowl contenders before taking the lead on Stafford's 52-yard strike to Van Jefferson to start the second half.

It turns out that was just a hint of what was to come from No. 9 with the game on the line.

He capitalized on a short field after an Arizona turnover by rolling out and finding Kupp for a touchdown to open up a two-score lead with perfect ball placement into a tight window. When the Cardinals seized some momentum with a fourth-quarter touchdown, he responded with an unbelievable deep ball to Kupp to set up a field goal after the officials missed a clear facemask call that should have preserved the drive.

Stafford was dialed in while spreading the ball around to different receivers with multiple dazzling throws. He was the best quarterback on the field in a matchup with Murray and will elevate the Rams' ceiling if he maintains Monday's level.

Cardinals Miss Chance to Put Division on Ice

Arizona had a golden opportunity to essentially clinch the division at home by moving three games ahead with four remaining, but it didn't exactly come out of the gates in dominant fashion.

Its first scoring drive stalled in a field goal, Murray threw an interception to Ernest Jones inside the Rams' 5-yard line and Aaron Donald notched multiple sacks as a menace for the Arizona offensive line.

The slow start was partially a credit to Donald and the Rams defense, but the Cardinals eventually found the end zone when Conner broke through the star defender's tackle attempt on a critical fourth-down play near the goal line.

Murray helped set up that touchdown with a beautiful deep ball to Christian Kirk on the move and then put Matt Prater in position to tie the game at halftime with a well-timed scramble that ended with him going out of bounds with one second remaining in the second quarter.

It seemed as if that would create some momentum that carried over into the second half, but that was not the case. Murray threw an ugly interception to Leonard Floyd on Arizona's first drive after intermission before DeAndre Hopkins had an uncharacteristic drop on fourth down in the red zone on the next.

The Cardinals wouldn't go down without a fight, though, as Murray bounced back with a deep ball to A.J. Green to set up Conner's second touchdown of the game to cut the deficit in half in the fourth quarter.

That was the last time it looked like Arizona had a true chance until the onside kick, as its defense failed to notch a clutch stop down the stretch before Conner was stuffed on a 4th-and-1 attempt. It may be in first place, but it was outplayed throughout the game and is now in a legitimate battle for the division crown in the season's final stretch.

What's Next?

Both teams are in action in Week 15 when the Cardinals travel to face the Detroit Lions and the Rams host the Seattle Seahawks.

Analysis

While there will be more clarity in the playoff picture after Sunday and Monday night—namely in the AFC East, with the Patriots and Bills battling on Monday Night Football for first place in the division—there was certainly plenty to be learned from the early and late-afternoon games Sunday.

The Cardinals, for instance, still control the top overall seed in the NFC after a convincing 33-22 win over the Bears. In fact, the early slate of games didn't change the first four seeds in the AFC or the first six seeds in the NFC in the slightest.

But things sure got interesting from there.

In the AFC, the Chargers' huge 41-22 win over the Bengals bumped the Bills up to the No. 5 seed in the playoff picture after they started the day at No. 6, while the Chargers moved up to No. 6 and the Bengals fell to No. 7.

The wild-card berths are going to come down to the wire. Currently, just 1.5 games separate the No. 6 Chargers from the No. 13 Dolphins, who have now won five in a row.

And don't sleep on the Colts, winners of six of their last eight.

In the NFC, the current battle for the No. 7 seed got more interesting, as the Eagles bolstered their chances with a Gardner Minshew-led win over the hapless Jets, while the Giants and Bears likely fell out of contention at 4-8 apiece and the Vikings dropped a winnable matchup versus the Lions.

Just one game separates the No. 6 Washington Football Team from the No. 12 Saints. Washington's win, coupled with San Francisco's loss, moved Washington up to the No. 6 spot. Like the AFC, the NFC is all bunched up in the wild-card chase.

As for the "race" to the top overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, the Lions remain peerless, still holding a grip on the selection with 1-10-1 record. The Texans and Jaguars are trying to make up ground, however, each dropping to 2-10 on the year. They now find themselves just a half-game back of the Lions after Detroit's stunning 29-27 win over the Vikings on Sunday.

Report: Kliff Kingsbury Contract Extension a 'Priority' for Cardinals After OU Rumors

The 9-2 Arizona Cardinals have the best record in the NFL, and they reportedly have no interest in seeing head coach Kliff Kingsbury elsewhere with just one year remaining on his contract after the 2021 campaign.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Sunday that "a long-term extension is a significant offseason priority for the Cardinals, and the coach's leverage has clearly never been higher."

Perhaps that leverage comes in part because ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Nov. 28 that Oklahoma "targeted" Kingsbury in its search for a head coach after the departure of Lincoln Riley to USC. Still, La Canfora noted "there was no serious dialogue between" the two sides.

It was certainly a surprising development when the Oklahoma position became available considering Riley helped lead the Sooners to the College Football Playoff three times and had a 55-10 record during his tenure.

However, he created a vacancy at one of the country's elite programs.

Kingsbury has Big 12 connections from his time as a player and head coach for Texas Tech, although he was just 35-40 as the coach from 2013 through 2018. Oklahoma is also set to join the SEC in 2025.

The Cardinals head coach is also in one of the most favorable positions in the NFL since Kyler Murray is the team's franchise quarterback at just 24 years old and seems primed to compete for MVPs and NFC West crowns for seasons to come.

Arizona is also trending in the right direction under Kingsbury considering it was just 5-10-1 in his first season in 2019, 8-8 last year and now 9-2 through its first 11 games this season.

His background as an offensive coach at the collegiate level is well-suited for Murray's game, as the quarterback can hurt opposing defenses with his legs and his arm as a dual-threat playmaker.

Keeping the quarterback and coach together and continuing to build on their progress seems like the fastest way to a Lombardi Trophy for the Cardinals, and they are apparently going to make an effort to do just that during the offseason.

Kyler Murray, DeAndre Hopkins to Play for Cardinals vs. Bears in Return from Injuries

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury told Stacey Dales of NFL Network the team will have some star power back Sunday with quarterback Kyler Murray and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins scheduled to play against the Chicago Bears.

Murray and Hopkins last played on Oct. 28 against the Green Bay Packers, and the Cardinals went 2-1 without them.

Murray was ruled inactive for Arizona's Week 9 game against the San Francisco 49ers as he was nursing a sprained left ankle. It was the first game he missed in his three-year career, ending a streak of 40 consecutive starts.

Murray was injured on the final play of Arizona's loss against the Packers when his ankle got rolled up on. It was the Cardinals' first loss of the season after starting the year 7-0.

The 2019 No. 1 overall pick had established himself as an MVP candidate this season. Through eight games, he completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 2,276 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions while adding 147 yards and three scores on the ground.

Hopkins remained a primary weapon with 35 catches for 486 yards and seven touchdowns in that span.

After missing the playoffs for five straight years, the Cardinals have moved into contender status in the NFC behind the play of Murray. Murray was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time in his career in 2020 after throwing for 3,971 yards and 26 touchdowns while adding 819 rushing yards and 11 scores on the ground.

The NFC West team would likely turn to Colt McCoy once again if Murray was sidelined in the future.

J.J. Watt Rumors: Cardinals Star Could Return from Shoulder Injury for AZ Playoff Run

Arizona Cardinals defensive end J.J. Watt could reportedly return from shoulder surgery for the NFC Championship Game or the Super Bowl if the team makes a deep playoff run.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported the news Thursday on The Pat McAfee Show:

Watt, who last played in an Oct. 24 win over the Houston Texans, generated buzz in recent weeks with cryptic posts on his Twitter account:

The 32-year-old Wisconsin native is no stranger to beating expectations for injury recoveries. While with the Texans in 2019, he was placed on injured reserve that October with a torn pectoral muscle expected to end his season. Instead, he returned in time for the team's playoff game in January.

"Sometimes, you've got to be crazy enough to try and understand the risks and accept the consequences if it [doesn't] work," Watt told reporters after Houston's wild-card win over the Buffalo Bills. "But it was worth it. It was worth all the tests. It was worth all the work. It was worth all the s--tty, tough days. It was worth it."

The five-time Pro Bowl edge-rusher was granted his release by the Texans in February and generated interest from several championship contenders before signing a two-year, $28 million contract with Arizona.

He recorded 16 total tackles, two passes defended, a sack and a forced fumble in seven games before being sidelined by the shoulder injury.

While the production was modest, his track record of being a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year can't be ignored. He could provide a boost to the team's pass rush if he returns during the postseason run.

Arizona has to make it that far, though. The team sits atop the NFC standings with a 9-2 record. Holding the top seed would give the Cards a first-round bye and leave them only one win away from the conference title game and a potential Watt return.

For now, linebackers Markus Golden (10 sacks) and Chandler Jones (eight) will continue to lead the edge-rushing group for the Cardinals' fifth-ranked defense.

Arizona returns from its Week 12 bye Sunday when it visits Soldier Field to take on the Chicago Bears (4-7).

Kliff Kingsbury Told Cardinals 'He Isn't Going Anywhere' amid Oklahoma Rumors

Kliff Kingsbury has been rumored to be connected with the Oklahoma head-coaching vacancy, but that's not the message he delivered to his current team.

Per Kevin Parrish Jr. of AZCardinals.com, Arizona Cardinals linebacker Isaiah Simmons said Wednesday that Kingsbury told them "he isn’t going anywhere."

Cardinals star Kyler Murray did his best to quiet the speculation surrounding his coach on Wednesday.

"I know Kliff. I don't really buy into it," Murray said, Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic. "I think he's got a pretty good job right now."

In the wake of Lincoln Riley leaving the Sooners to take over at USC, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Oklahoma "has targeted" Kingsbury as his potential replacement.

Schefter noted that Kingsbury has one year remaining after this season on his original deal with the Cardinals that was signed in January 2019.

Kingsbury's coaching career began in the college ranks. He joined Kevin Sumlin's staff at the University of Houston in 2008 as a quality control coach before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2010.

After following Sumlin to Texas A&M as offensive coordinator for the 2012 season, Kingsbury was hired by his alma mater, Texas Tech, as head coach in 2013. He went 35-40 with three bowl appearances in six seasons with the Red Raiders.

USC originally hired Kingsbury as its offensive coordinator in December 2018, but the Cardinals lured him away one month later. The 42-year-old went 13-18-1 in his first two seasons with Arizona.

Through Week 12 this season, Kingsbury has the Cardinals atop the NFC standings with a 9-2 record. They rank fifth in the NFL in points scored (28.2 per game) despite not having Murray or DeAndre Hopkins for the past three games.

Arizona hasn't made the playoffs since losing to the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFC Championship Game.

Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury on Oklahoma Rumors: 'I Don't Get Into Those Things'

Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury was not interested in discussing any possibility he could be the next head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners.

"I don't get into those things," he told reporters Monday while also saying his "sole focus" is on the upcoming game against the Chicago Bears.

The comments come after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Kingbury could be a potential candidate for the Sooners, especially since he has just one year left on his current contract following the 2021 campaign.

The Oklahoma job is open after USC announced it hired Lincoln Riley as its next head coach.

While USC is a major job and brings the recruiting advantages of Southern California, it was still somewhat surprising to see Riley leave the Sooners. After all, he helped maintain their position as one of the best programs in the country by going 55-10 during his tenure and reaching the College Football Playoff three times.

Meanwhile, USC is just 4-7 this season and has struggled to replicate some of its past success in recent years.

Kingsbury is certainly familiar with the Big 12 and Oklahoma's recruiting territory from his days as a player and the head coach at Texas Tech. He was the coach of the Red Raiders from 2013 through 2018 and went 35-40 while struggling to keep pace with some of the conference's best programs.

That familiarity with the Big 12 would also only go so far if he was the next Sooners head coach since they are primed to join the SEC in the near future.

Still, Kingsbury is in a favorable position with the Cardinals.

Not only do they have the best record in the NFL at 9-2 this season, but they also have 24-year-old Kyler Murray as the franchise quarterback. If things go according to plan, Arizona will continue building around Murray as it competes for Super Bowls during his prime.

That would be a difficult position for Kingsbury to leave, especially since he has been a key component of the team's development as the head coach since the 2019 campaign. The Cardinals have shown steady improvement during his tenure and went 5-10-1 in his first year before an 8-8 mark last season.

It isn't a stretch to suggest Kingsbury's name being attached to high-profile college openings like Oklahoma's could be a leverage play given his contract status, but it would be a surprise to see him leave the Cardinals at this point.

Cardinals' Kyler Murray Close to Playing After 'Crazy Progress' in Ankle Injury Rehab

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray told reporters Wednesday he's "pretty close" to returning after missing the past two games with an ankle injury.

"Last week I've made crazy progress," Murray said. "I'm way further along that I thought I would be."

The initial injury came during an Oct. 28 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Murray tried to work his way back but was ruled out in each of the last two games as Colt McCoy went 1-1 in two games as the starter.

Arizona is scheduled to face the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday before a Week 12 bye.

The upcoming bye could allow the 8-2 Cardinals to be conservative with their star quarterback, but they have just a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC West and are tied for the No. 1 seed in the NFC.

One game could make a significant difference in the 2021 standings.

When healthy, Murray was playing at an MVP level with 2,276 passing yards and 17 touchdowns in eight games. He has a 110.4 quarterback rating and currently leads the NFL with a 72.7 completion percentage.

Even after the McCoy-led offense only scored 10 points in a loss to the Carolina Panthers, the Cardinals still rank fourth in the league in points per game (28.7).

Getting the superstar back on the field would certainly be a major boost to the Super Bowl contenders heading into the stretch run of the season.

Report: Cardinals' Kyler Murray Progressing in Injury Rehab; Could Play vs. Seahawks

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray appears to be inching closer toward a return.

Murray is reportedly "making good progress" in his recovery from an ankle injury, a source told Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Another source told Florio there's a "good chance" the 24-year-old plays in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Athletic's Jeff Howe reported on Nov. 10 that Murray was considered week-to-week with his injury, which he suffered late in a Week 8 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He only recently returned to practice.

With Murray sidelined, the Cardinals started Colt McCoy in back-to-back weeks. He impressed in a Week 9 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers but exited Week 10 against the Carolina Panthers with a pectoral injury after completing 11-of-20 passes for 107 yards and an interception.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters after Sunday's loss to the Panthers that the outcome won't change how quickly Murray is brought back.

Florio also noted that it "could make sense" to give Murray another week off with Arizona's bye week coming up in Week 12. That would allow the young quarterback another three weeks to recover before a Week 13 matchup against the Chicago Bears.

Murray has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL this season and was viewed as an MVP candidate before being sidelined. He has completed 72.7 percent of his passes for 2,276 yards and 17 touchdowns against seven interceptions and has also run for 147 yards and three scores.

Arizona is still atop the NFC West with an 8-2 record, but the Los Angeles Rams could tie them for the division lead with a win over the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night. However, the Cardinals are 3-0 in the division and have a road win over the Rams, which could prove to be huge in a tiebreaker scenario.

Fantasy Alert: Kyler Murray, DeAndre Hopkins Likely Out with Injuries in Week 10

Fantasy managers who have Kyler Murray and/or DeAndre Hopkins on their roster might want to consider putting the Arizona Cardinals stars on the bench before Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers.

The Cardinals are reportedly not optimistic Murray will play against Carolina because of an ankle injury, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Hopkins is also unlikely to play with a hamstring injury, Schefter added.

Murray suffered an ankle sprain against the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 28 and did not play last weekend against the San Francisco 49ers. Hopkins also didn't play against San Francisco after injuring his hamstring against Green Bay.

With Murray sidelined, fantasy managers can consider picking up backup QB Colt McCoy, who was actually quite impressive in last weekend's 31-17 win over the 49ers. He completed 22-of-26 passes for 249 yards and one touchdown, in addition to running for 23 yards on seven carries.

McCoy is rostered in just two percent of Yahoo Sports fantasy leagues. However, the 35-year-old shouldn't continue to start for the Cardinals much longer as Murray returned to practice this week. Head coach Kliff Kingsbury also said the 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year is progressing, which is a good sign.

In terms of replacements for Hopkins, Christian Kirk would be a fantasy manager's best option. The 24-year-old was the team's leading wide receiver in last weekend's win with six catches for 91 yards.

Kirk also leads the Cardinals with 40 catches for 545 yards this season. However, he ranks second behind Hopkins with four touchdowns. The Texas A&M product could be a difficult add for fantasy managers, though, as he's rostered in 72 percent of Yahoo leagues

However, veteran WR AJ Green, who was recently activated from the reserve/COVID-19 list, and rookie receiver Rondale Moore could be valuable additions this weekend. Green ranks third on the team with 456 yards and three touchdowns, while Moore is third with 34 catches and fourth with 352 yards.

Green is rostered in 47 percent of Yahoo leagues, while Moore is rostered in just 26 percent of leagues. If neither of those players are available, B/R's Maurice Moton recommended  Rashod Bateman (Baltimore Ravens), Elijah Moore (New York Jets) and Donovan Peoples-Jones (Cleveland Browns) as solid waiver wire additions for Week 10.
