The Eagles Can Remain Super Bowl Contenders for Years to Come

The rich got richer this week when the NFL's only undefeated team, the Philadelphia Eagles, acquired veteran edge-defender Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears as they gear up for a Super Bowl run under the tutelage of MVP-contending quarterback Jalen Hurts.

Philadelphia leads the NFC by a wide margin when it comes to DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average), per Football Outsiders, and the team's average margin of victory (9.3 points per game) is more than double that of the conference's next-highest-ranked squad (Dallas Cowboys, 4.2 PPG).

With A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert and Miles Sanders working with Hurts at the skill positions and Lane Johnson and Jason Kelce anchoring the offensive line for the league's fourth-highest-scoring offense, and with Brandon Graham, Haason Reddick, Darius Slay and James Bradberry all starring for the league's fourth-ranked scoring defense, nobody is doubting the 2022 Eagles—especially now that the veteran Quinn is on board.

But what's got to scare the rest of that division, conference and league is that this Eagles team looks built to last well beyond 2022 and 2023, when Hurts' rookie contract expires.

Obviously, Hurts' future will have a tremendous impact on how competitive Nick Sirianni's team is as we enter the middle of the decade, but the franchise tag will of course remain on the table if he's a superstar. And still, the Eagles aren't a team that went all-in for a year or two. General manager Howie Roseman has done a masterful job rebuilding an organization that won just four games two years ago, and plenty of critical pieces are in place for long-term success.

As ESPN's Adam Schefter pointed out, even after this week's trade that sent a fourth-round draft pick to Chicago, the Eagles possess six selections in the 2023 draft—including two in the first round as a result of a deal with the New Orleans Saints. That trade with New Orleans also gives them an additional second-round pick in 2024, and they have the Minnesota Vikings' fifth-rounder that year as well.

Per Spotrac, right now, only three teams have more salary-cap space than the Eagles, who don't technically have to worry about paying a quarterback premium until at least 2024. They're not projected at the moment to be in any sort of cap purgatory this or next offseason, and Brown, Smith, Goedert and Johnson are all under contract through at least the 2025 campaign.

That doesn't mean there isn't a lot of work to be done. Graham, Fletcher Cox and Jason Kelce are all in contract years in their 30s, and Bradberry and Sanders are also scheduled to hit free agency this coming offseason. But Roseman has proved he's developed a Midas touch with recent offseason/in-season moves involving Hurts (who wasn't widely viewed as a long-term NFL starter entering the league as a second-round pick), Slay (who appears to be getting better with age) and Bradberry (who's having a ridiculous season on a cheap one-year contract), as well as Smith, Reddick, Brown and pleasant preseason addition C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Roseman's guidance alone should instill confidence in Eagles fans that the window is wide-open and will remain that way for longer than teams that understandably sacrifice the long term while chasing short-term glory.

Besides, there's already plenty of younger talent on the roster to be excited about in the event those veterans move on. Landon Dickerson, Jordan Mailata, Jordan Davis, Gardner-Johnson, Milton Williams and Quez Watkins are all factors and no older than 25.

Of course, so much of it comes down to Hurts himself. If the third-year breakout star can continue down this path, there's almost no way he won't remain an Eagle for at least three or four more seasons. Likely more because 20-something-year-old franchise quarterbacks rarely move, but beyond that window, he could of course become so expensive that the remainder of the roster would take a hit.

That's always been a catch-22 with star quarterbacks, but the important thing right now is that the barely-24-year-old is the NFC's second-highest-rated passer while ranking second in the NFL with six rushing touchdowns. The Eagles offense has been tailor-made for his unique skill set, but he's also developed a much better ability to make big throws in big moments within the structure of that offense.

The Buffalo Bills remain the favorite to win this year's Super Bowl. The Eagles could absolutely change that, but even if they don't, it won't be doomsday for this team anytime soon.

Eagles' Howie Roseman Hyped as Exec of the Year by Twitter After Robert Quinn Trade

The Philadelphia Eagles are all-in for a Super Bowl run after a 6-0 start, and the Chicago Bears are rebuilding with a first-year general manager, first-year head coach and young quarterback.

That made them ideal trade partners, and they came to terms on a blockbuster agreement Wednesday.

The Bears are trading star pass-rusher Robert Quinn to the Eagles, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. ESPN's Adam Schefter noted the Bears will receive a fourth-round draft pick in return.

While Quinn has only one sack through seven games this year, he was dominant in 2021 as a Pro Bowler with 18.5 sacks. It was the fifth time in his career that he finished a season with double-digit sacks.

Twitter users had plenty of reactions to the deal, with many praising Eagles general manager Howie Roseman:

Quinn is having a down season, but he'll be on a far better team in Philadelphia than he was in Chicago. He likely won't see nearly as many double-teams on the Eagles and could rediscover the form he showed in the past when he was playing alongside the likes of Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks on the Bears.

Mack and Hicks are no longer in Chicago, so Quinn was the focus of every opposing offensive line whenever he took the field in 2022. That won't necessarily be the case for the Eagles, and he now has a chance to pursue a Lombardi Trophy.

Robert Quinn Traded to Eagles from Bears for 4th-Round Pick in 2023 NFL Draft

The Philadelphia Eagles are bolstering their pass rush, acquiring edge rusher Robert Quinn from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a fourth-round pick in 2023.

According to The MMQB's Albert Breer, the Bears are picking up $7.1 million of Quinn's remaining salary for this season. In turn, the Eagles will pay Quinn a shade over $700,000 for the duration of the campaign.

Quinn, 32, has had a quiet season for the Bears, posting one sack, three quarterback hits and eight tackles in seven games. It's a far cry from his 2021 season when he notched 18.5 sacks.

Dating back to 2018, however, Quinn has rotated mediocre sack totals with big seasons:

  • 2018: 6.5 sacks in 16 games
  • 2019: 11.5 sacks in 14 games
  • 2020: Two sacks in 15 games
  • 2021: 18.5 sacks in 16 games

He's also made an impact on his teammates, as shown by Bears linebacker Roquan Smith's reaction to the trade:

Depth on the edge became a major need for the Eagles after Derek Barnett was lost for the season with a torn ACL in September.

The Eagles will have a solid group off the edge in Haason Reddick (4.5 sacks), Brandon Graham (3.0 sacks), Josh Sweat (2.5 sacks) and Quinn. It's a rich-get-richer situation for the 6-0 Eagles, the lone undefeated team in the NFL.

It appears to be another savvy move for general manager Howie Roseman. He crushed the offseason, adding Reddick and cornerback James Bradberry through free agency, wideout A.J. Brown and defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson via trades, and Jordan Davis in the draft, among other moves.

He also added the New Orleans Saints' 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-rounder in a draft-day picks swap. The Saints are 2-5, meaning the Eagles could have an inbound top-10 pick.

Eagles Rumors: PHI Seeking Pass-Rush Help in Trades After Derek Barnett Injury

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly expected to be aggressive in seeking pass-rushing help before the NFL's Nov. 1 trade deadline.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is "on the attack" as the deadline approaches amid the team's struggles to replace injured defensive end Derek Barnett.

The Eagles currently rank in the middle of the pack leaguewide with 17 sacks over their first six games, though they have generated pressure at a solid rate. Only the Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars have a better pass-rush win rate than Philadelphia heading into Week 8, per ESPN Analytics.

Starting defensive ends Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat have combined for only 5.5 sacks, so finishing the play has been an issue when the Eagles get into the backfield.

If Roseman wants to cash in his chips on a 2022 Super Bowl run, Philadelphia could make a play for Carolina Panthers defensive end Brian Burns. Fowler noted the Panthers have been asking for two future first-round picks for the Pro Bowl edge-rusher, which is a steep price to pay for a good-but-not-otherworldly talent. But Burns is by far the best player potentially available to the Eagles before next week's deadline, and Roseman has never been afraid of being aggressive.

Chicago Bears defensive end Robert Quinn was also mentioned as a potential trade target, but Fowler reported teams have been informed to this point that the Bears plan on keeping him past the deadline.

A fan who ran onto the field with the Philadelphia Eagles prior to Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys has been banned from Lincoln Financial Field.

Per John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia, the fan is also being charged, and the NFL has opened an investigation into the situation.

The fan somehow got into the tunnel leading onto the field and ran with the Eagles before security was able to remove him.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer noted some Eagles players must have thought the fan was supposed to be there, as Jason Kelce and others gave him low-fives in the lineup.

According to Rob Tornoe of the Philadelphia Inquirer, it's unclear if the fan is a season-ticket holder.

Per Lincoln Financial Field's website, anyone who violates the fan code of conduct is subject to ejection from the stadium, arrest or having their ticket and/or parking privileges revoked.

There have been a number of incidents involving fans running onto the field during football games this season.

One day before the Cowboys-Eagles game, a fan who ran onto the field during the Auburn-Mississippi matchup at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium was tackled by security and a Highway Patrol officer.

Los Angeles Rams linebacker Bobby Wagner tackled a fan who stormed the field during a game against the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 3.

The Eagles went on to defeat the Cowboys 26-17, improving their record to 6-0 this season.

Eagles LB Kyzir White Sued; Accused of Causing Serious Car Crash in September 2021

Philadelphia Eagles starting linebacker Kyzir White is being sued for allegedly causing a serious car crash in Los Angeles in 2021, according to TMZ Sports.

Christopher Merced, who filed the suit on Tuesday, alleges that White crashed into his 2019 Chevrolet Silverado on Interstate 105 on Sept. 3, 2021. Merced's lawsuit states that traffic had stopped before White, who apparently didn't see the traffic, merged into his lane while driving over 40 mph and collided with him.

Merced said White "did not make any effort to slow down or stop," adding that he believes White was either distracted or impaired. Merced said he suffered serious and permanent injuries because of the crash and he is suing for unspecified damages.

White, who is in his first year in Philadelphia after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, was previously stopped in Orange County, California in 2020 for misdemeanor reckless driving after allegedly speeding at 100 mph and committing an "unsafe turn or lane change" infraction.

White has appeared in all six games for the Eagles with three starts, and he ranks second on the team with 37 total tackles.

Nick Sirianni Told Eagles Wearing 'Beat Dallas' Shirt in 2021 Was 'Stupid on My Part'

Last season, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni wore a "Beat Dallas" t-shirt to a news conference ahead of the team's matchup against the Dallas Cowboys.

Before Sunday's matchup against America's team, Sirianni, while holding up the "Beat Dallas" t-shirt, said that wearing it last season was "stupid on my part."

Of course, the Eagles-Cowboys rivalry dates back to the dawn of time, but instead of focusing on that rivalry, Sirianni wants his players to focus on playing for each other and getting the win because it's all that matters this week.

With a win, the Eagles will move to 6-0 on the season. They are the only team in the NFL that is still undefeated. A loss would drop them to 5-1, tied with Dallas for the division lead.

Weak NFC Is Wide Open as Flawed Tampa Bay Buccaneers Get Stomped on SNF

The NFC currently consists of the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles, then everyone else.

A sort of malaise hangs over the majority of the NFL. No truly dominant team has emerged. Even the Eagles were down a pair of touchdowns Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars before ripping off 29 straight points.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were supposed to be a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Instead, Tom Brady and Co. have started 2-2 after their 41-31 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football.

Back-to-back home losses to the Green Bay Packers, who are still trying to figure out who they exactly are as a team, and the Chiefs don't bode well for the Bucs.

Yet everything remains in front of Tampa Bay, and it's far too early to write such a talented squad off, especially when the GOAT resides behind center.

The Buccaneers played from behind all night long after rookie Rachaad White fumbled the opening kickoff, and the Chiefs quickly capitalized with a Patrick Mahomes' touchdown pass to his favorite target, Travis Kelce.

The game quickly snowballed as Tampa Bay struggled to contain the Chiefs offense—the same offense that made significant mistakes in last week's loss to the struggling Indianapolis Colts. Things can change rapidly.

"Our red zone defense was poor. Our run defense was poor. Our pass defense was poor. Our third-down efficiency was poor, and we played a poor game," head coach Todd Bowles told reporters after the loss. "That falls on me. I'll take that."

Professional football is funny in a way. Performances don't always carry over from week to week.

The Eagles found a recipe for success. They have the league's best offensive line. The defense flies all over the field. Jalen Hurts is a legitimate threat as a passer and runner, which stresses opposing defenses to the breaking point.

A.J. Brown is everything the team envisioned as its WR1. DeVonta Smith is playing well. Zach Pascal adds a certain level of physicality at wide receiver. Everything is clicking in the City of Brotherly Love.

Meanwhile, multiple franchises own 3-1 records, yet questions still persist if some are any good at all. We're all looking at the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings and wondering if they really are the best their respective conference has to offer, even with their combined 9-3 record.

Tampa Bay is very much in the mix with this group based on how its immediate future currently stands.

An ugly loss against the Chiefs shouldn't be indicative of the entire team or the season. Mahomes made plays. Kansas City came out with an exceptional offensive game plan, as it tends to do. It's one of those games where those within the locker room can simply forget what happened and turn their attention toward the next contest.

A favorable lineup of opponents should certainly help matters.

Over the next three weeks, Tampa Bay faces the Atlanta Falcons, Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers. The Falcons barely made it past the Cleveland Browns this weekend despite Myles Garrett and Jadeveon Clowney not playing.

The Steelers will have a rookie making his second start in the contest, assuming Kenny Pickett is now the guy after replacing Mitchell Trubisky in Sunday's game. The Panthers are struggling with the league's worst offense.

A 5-2 record is a strong possibility for the Buccaneers, especially as the roster's health improves. Left tackle Donovan Smith and wide receivers Chris Godwin and Julio Jones were active for the Chiefs contest. Those are steps in the right direction.

Defensive lineman Akiem Hicks could be back during the aforementioned stretch as he recovers from a torn plantar fascia in Week 2.

Obviously, the Bucs played from behind the entire night and abandoned the run, which resulted in Brady throwing for 385 yards. Mike Evans looked fantastic with eight receptions for 103 yards and a pair of touchdown grabs.

The 6'5" target remains one of the league's biggest mismatches, and the offense will only improve as Jones and Godwin get more reps by staying on the field.

Despite the outcome, the Chiefs knew what they were facing going into the contest.

"Yeah, they're one of, if not the best, defense in football," Mahomes told reporters last week. "They have a great coach, defensive coach with Coach Bowles, who's done it for a long time and been really good everywhere he's been.

"And they have great players in every phase: linebackers, D-line, secondary, and they've played together for a while, so they're going to kind of confuse you, give you different looks, and they're going to fly around and make plays. So, it's about us executing, getting the ball out of my hand and making these other guys make plays."

Mahomes certainly executed. If the play didn't work, the quarterback usually made something happen. But Mahomes is a one-of-a-kind talent. Tampa isn't going to face another top quarterback until Week 8 when Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens come to town.

Typically, the Buccaneers are one of the best coached and most aggressive defenses. Mahomes wasn't lying with his assessment.

Vita Vea is a powerhouse along the interior. Lavonte David and Devin White cover as much space as any two linebackers. Safety Antoine Winfield Jr. has a nose for the football. The talent is there for the Bucs defense to bounce back quickly.

All of the mistakes and shortcomings can be highlighted, but in the end, the Buccaneers are still in first place in the NFC East with a 2-2 start and a 1-0 divisional record. And outside of the Eagles, no one has really separated themselves from the pack.

When looking at the Giants, concerns at quarterback—where running back Saquon Barkley was forced to take snaps in the second half because of injuries—aren't going away anytime soon.

Dak Prescott should return to the Cowboys soon, which will make them a difficult out. The Vikings didn't stack up well against the Eagles when the two teams played in Week 2.

Otherwise, who's really left to challenge for the NFC's top spots?

Aaron Rodgers continues to lead the Packers, even though the back-to-back league MVP is still finding a footing with his new receivers.

The reigning Super Bowl champs, the Los Angeles Rams, couldn't handle the Buffalo Bills in Week 1, only to beat two inferior teams in the Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals. Still, this duo sits among the NFC's second tier.

The 2-2 Chicago Bears are a one-sided team with a talented defense but no confidence whatsoever in quarterback Justin Fields.

The Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals sport the same record. The former is currently flying high with Geno Smith behind center, but he can't possibly keep up his record pace of completing 77.5 percent of his passes for an entire season.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals' poorly concocted offense has been highly inconsistent. DeAndre Hopkins' eventual return from a six-game suspension should help the latter issue, though.

Maybe the one-win San Francisco 49ers, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints or Washington Commanders make a run after poor starts. The possibility of that actually happening seems slight, with so many questions littering those rosters.

The Eagles got off to a runaway start. Even so, every other NFC team remains in the mix, no matter how they started.

The conference is just waiting for another top squad to emerge, and the Buccaneers are as good of a bet as any to be that team.
