WWE WrestleMania 36: Predicting Most Likely Swerves

Mar 31, 2020

WESTWOOD, CA - AUGUST 09: Ronda Rousey attends the Premiere Of STX Films'

The show goes on. WrestleMania 36 will take place at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, over two nights this weekend with a loaded card and former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski set to host the event.

With the country on strict limitations on crowds because of the coronavirus pandemic, fans won't be in attendance for this year's event. Still, the entertainers in the squared circle will work to put on a great show for everyone watching at home.

Big names such as Brock Lesnar, The Undertaker, Goldberg, John Cena, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch are all in action.

Viewers will also see a variety of matches.

The Undertaker takes on AJ Styles in a Boneyard match. Randy Orton faces Edge with Last Man Standing rules. The SmackDown women's title will feature Bayley, Sasha Banks, Naomi, Lacey Evans and Tamina in a Fatal 5-Way. Cena gets "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt in a Firefly Fun House match.

Of course, we can expect some surprises this weekend and perhaps some new champions starting fresh chapters in their careers.

We'll predict some swerves for the biggest matches.

'The Fiend' Bray Wyatt Squashes John Cena Firefly Fun House Match

Wyatt pinned Seth Rollins to win the universal title in a Falls Count Anywhere match in October at Crown Jewel, but his reign didn't last six months.

In February, he lost to Goldberg in the same city he won the title, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, at Super ShowDown. He now needs strong opposition to reclaim some momentum.

Cena is the perfect opponent for Wyatt on the big stage. For one, the wrestling icon turned movie star doesn't need a win. A loss wouldn't hurt his legacy, which is already cemented as a 16-time world champion. However, anyone who beats the veteran earns respect for going toe-to-toe with one of the best in the business.

Despite The Cenation Leader's recent absence from the wrestling world, Wyatt would look dominant in a convincing victory over his high-profile adversary. He could take it to another level in his Firefly Fun House domain where Cena would be on uncertain terrain.

During the March 13 episode of WWE SmackDown, Wyatt said his WrestleMania 30 loss to Cena "broke him." He can exorcise those demons with revenge on his mind.

Expect The Fiend to win this matchup in dominant fashion with some theatrics thrown in to portray Cena's ultimate destruction.

Ronda Rousey Distracts Becky Lynch, Shayna Baszler Wins Raw Women's Title

Before her title defense against Shayna Baszler, Lynch took a stroll down memory lane. We all saw her reach the pinnacle of the women's division, holding two titles in the middle of the ring after pinning Ronda Rousey at WrestleMania 35.

The Man tied the former UFC star into her final promo before this weekend's big event. She painted a picture of Baszler as a minion to her friend who came into WWE as The Baddest Woman on the Planet.

Even though WWE Creative has used Rousey as a storyline link between Lynch and Baszler, The Irish Lass Kicker's latest segment may have teased a return for the former Raw titleholder.

Recently, Rousey popped up at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. We may see her close to or in the ring again for wrestling's biggest spectacle. She doesn't have to physically interfere, but her presence might be enough to shock Lynch and allow Baszler to take advantage with the Kirifuda Clutch.

This scenario keeps a good feud alive, with Rousey lurking as an X-factor. Baszler would claim she can beat Lynch without help in the next match while The Man argues the new champion needed help to win.

Drew McIntyre Has His WrestleMania Moment

Typically, WrestleMania 36 will feature an underdog story that reaches its crescendo. Last year, Kofi Kingston beat Daniel Bryan for his first world singles title reign, while Lynch became "Becky Two Belts" following a victory over Rousey and Charlotte Flair in the main event.

Even without fans in attendance at the Performance Center, McIntyre could bask in the glory of his own career-changing victory.

After a decent run in WWE between 2007 and 2014, winning the intercontinental title and the tag team belts (twice), the Scot could reach new heights with a clean victory over universal champion Brock Lesnar.

On the March 30 episode of Raw, Lesnar's advocate, Paul Heyman, set the table for the matchup. He went through the big names in WWE and UFC who fell to The Beast—guys such as The Rock, Hulk Hogan, Cena, Shane Carwin and Randy Couture who have far more impressive professional resumes than McIntyre.

Heyman reminded us, as he always does, how many great competitors came up short against Lesnar, which highlights the mountain McIntyre must climb when he steps into the ring this weekend.

On the last Raw before WrestleMania 36, we didn't see a confrontation between Lesnar and McIntyre for extra hype, but the champion's resume speaks for itself. The challenger will need multiple Claymore Kicks to win, but the belt will likely change hands.

This result comes as a swerve because Lesnar only won the title in October. Furthermore, McIntyre eliminated the champion at the Royal Rumble in January. If the challenger pulls off a victory at WrestleMania 36, viewers may ask whether The Beast has met his kryptonite.

Fans who prefer to see the world title on anyone but Lesnar will hope that's the case.

Unique Location Makes John Cena vs. Fiend Main Event WrestleMania 36 Attraction

Mar 27, 2020
John Cena and The Fiend have turned their story into one of WrestleMania 36's most intriguing.
John Cena and The Fiend have turned their story into one of WrestleMania 36's most intriguing.

Six years removed from their first encounter on the Grandest Stage of Them All, John Cena and Bray Wyatt are set to renew hostilities at WrestleMania 36, albeit in a completely different environment.

Per Louis Dangoor of WrestleTalk, the longtime rivals are set to take their feud to new heights in a unique setting of some sort. While every match on the 'Mania card has reportedly already been filmed, it's unknown how much of a "cinematic feel" Cena vs. The Fiend will have.

Regardless of what it entails, their bout will benefit big time from taking place outside of the ring and is bound to be the event's standout attraction.

It should be noted that Cena vs. Wyatt wasn't all that great when they waged war at WrestleMania in 2014. Worse yet, Cena won in clean fashion, derailing any momentum Wyatt had.

Their other pay-per-view matches that year weren't much better, either. This raises the question of why WWE bothered to revisit the rivalry in the first place, especially if The Fiend's matches since SummerSlam haven't been anything spectacular.

If the idea is for Wyatt to avenge the loss and send Cena packing from WWE (at least for the foreseeable future), then it will have been worth it. After all, The Fiend needs to bounce back in a major way following his polarizing loss of the Universal Championship to Goldberg at Super ShowDown in February.

Taking this approach will allow them to hide their weaknesses as opponents and instead showcase their creativity. WWE doesn't often stray away from the norm (which would explain why Matt Hardy's Ultimate Deletion never received a sequel), so when it does, it feels like a special occasion.

If anyone can make this match work, it would be Wyatt. His evolution into The Fiend has been fantastic to watch and has made him one of the most compelling characters in the company.

Then again, the House of Horrors clash with Randy Orton from Payback 2017 was painfully boring and arguably on par with their lackluster WrestleMania matchup the month prior. It wouldn't be tough for him and Cena to top that, but the chances of this contest's success are every bit as high as its chances of failing.

WrestleMania in itself is a spectacle, specifically this year inside of an empty Performance Center. Combine that with how it will span two days and how it will be taped, and it's safe to say that the show needs a major attraction or two.

The Boneyard match between AJ Styles and The Undertaker will likely receive similar treatment, but Cena vs. Fiend feels like more of a marquee event because of the build and their history.

With Roman Reigns reportedly out of WrestleMania, per Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet, there's no reason for the Universal Championship matchup to go on last. If Brock Lesnar vs. Drew McIntyre is held Saturday night as originally planned, Cena vs. Fiend could well be what closes WrestleMania weekend.

As a match, Cena vs. Fiend has no business headlining WrestleMania, but on the bright side, it would give Wyatt his overdue moment in the spotlight. He has never won at WrestleMania before, but reigning supreme in the main event would be the perfect way for WWE to cement him as a top-tier talent.

Furthermore, WWE can think outside the box with the unique location and have The Fiend torment Cena any way he pleases. Again, this could wind up being a disaster, but the company should be applauded for at least attempting to try something new with these two.

Through terrific promo work and promises of this being a 'Mania match fans will never forget, Cena and Wyatt have sold the WWE Universe on their upcoming encounter. Now it's up to them to live up to the hype and deliver something that will be talked about for years to come.

WWE WrestleMania 36: Predicting Match Order for Saturday and Sunday Cards

WrestleMania 36 on April 4 and 5 will be perhaps the most unique WrestleMania of all time, and a big reason for that is the fact that it is being broken up into two nights.

The event will stay in Florida, but the coronavirus pandemic forced WWE to move WrestleMania from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, with no fans in attendance. While the situation isn't ideal, it allowed WWE to give the fans watching at home more WrestleMania than ever before.

WWE has had more than enough matches to put together multiple strong WrestleMania cards over the past few years, and WrestleMania 36 is no exception. Even so, breaking it up into two nights and making everything flow is no easy task.

Here is a breakdown of the cards you can expect to see on Nights 1 and 2 of WrestleMania 36 at the WWE Performance Center.

Night 1

  • SmackDown Tag Team Championship: The Miz & John Morrison (c) vs. The Usos vs. New Day
  • Elias vs. King Corbin
  • WWE Women's Tag Team Championship: The Kabuki Warriors (c) vs. Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross
  • Boneyard match: The Undertaker vs. AJ Styles
  • Intercontinental Championship: Sami Zayn (c) vs. Daniel Bryan
  • Last Man Standing: Edge vs. Randy Orton
  • Universal Championship: Goldberg (c) vs. Roman Reigns
  • Raw Women's Championship: Becky Lynch (c) vs. Shayna Baszler

Getting WrestleMania off to a hot start is paramount, and the best way to do that is by kicking off Night 1 with a tag team match that could go down as one of the best in WrestleMania history.

The Usos and New Day will battle on Friday's SmackDown to determine who will face champions The Miz and John Morrison at WrestleMania, but assuming there is a no-contest of some sort, a Triple Threat would be a great way to utilize all three teams.

After calming things down a bit with Elias vs. King Corbin and the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match, the Boneyard Match between The Undertaker and AJ Styles is a good fit for the middle of the card. It won't be a technical masterclass, but its gimmicky nature and the star power involved should keep fans engaged.

Following a contest that is light on actual wrestling, the Intercontinental Championship match between Sami Zayn and Daniel Bryan would be the perfect way to give fans something different right after.

The Last Man Standing match between Edge and Randy Orton has a chance to go on last, but it may not because of the fact that there is no title involved. Even so, it should be a highly physical and personal bout that could steal the show, even when taking Night 2 into account.

Since that figures to be a longer match, going with the Universal Championship match between Goldberg and Roman Reigns next would be the right move. That bout figures to be a hard-hitting affair that only lasts about five minutes.

After main-eventing WrestleMania last year, The Man gets another main event spot, as Becky Lynch defends the Raw Women's Championship against Shayna Baszler.

Not only does Lynch vs. Baszler have a chance to be a fantastic technical spectacle, but Ronda Rousey's history with both Superstars could lead to her making an appearance, which would almost certainly require Becky and Shayna to go on last.

Night 2

  • Raw Tag Team Championship: The Street Profits (c) vs. Andrade & Angel Garza
  • Aleister Black vs. Bobby Lashley
  • Otis vs. Dolph Ziggler
  • John Cena vs. "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt
  • SmackDown Women's Championship Fatal 5-Way: Bayley (c) vs. Sasha Banks vs. Naomi vs. Lacey Evans vs. Tamina
  • Seth Rollins vs. Kevin Owens
  • NXT Women's Championship: Rhea Ripley (c) vs. Charlotte Flair
  • WWE Championship: Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Drew McIntyre

Like Night 1, Night 2 would benefit from starting with a tag title match. There isn't much history between The Street Profits and the team of Andrade and Angel Garza, but there is an impressive level of athleticism involved, and they should be able to put on a spectacular bout.

In keeping with the theme from Night 1, the Aleister Black vs. Bobby Lashley and Otis vs. Dolph Ziggler matches would allow the fans watching at home to settle in before going to one of the most intriguing matches on the card: John Cena vs. "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt.

Similar to Taker vs. Styles, Cena vs. Wyatt would benefit from being an on-location match with a cinematic presentation. If it takes place at the Firefly Funhouse or in an abandoned warehouse, it would add layers to a bout that may not have otherwise impressed the viewers.

That would be followed by what figures to be a chaotic affair in the form of a Fatal 5-Way Elimination match for the SmackDown Women's Championship. Bayley vs. Sasha Banks is the story the WWE Universe is hoping to get out of it, and that could be a nice lead-in to the triple main event.

It can be argued that the feud between Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens is a bit played out at this point, but Rollins breathed new life into it with a great promo on Raw. Rollins and Owens are two of the best workers in WWE, and they have the potential to put on WrestleMania's best match.

In a huge spot after that would be the NXT Women's Championship match between Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair. Not only would putting that clash on second to last shine the spotlight on NXT, but it would also allow the fast-rising Ripley to prove she can deliver on the big stage.

Of all the matches on the WrestleMania card, the bout between WWE champion Brock Lesnar and Royal Rumble winner Drew McIntyre has to close things out.

This WrestleMania seems tailor-made for McIntyre's evolution into an established main event star, and having him beat The Beast in the main event would solidify that status.
