At long last, the Cincinnati Bengals are playoff winners.

Cincinnati defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 26-19 in Saturday's AFC Wild Card Round at Paul Brown Stadium. Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase led the way for the victors, who won a playoff game for the first time since the 1990 season.

A solid showing from Derek Carr was not enough for the Raiders, who remain without a postseason victory since the 2002 campaign.

Las Vegas had an opportunity to force overtime in the final two minutes, but Carr's fourth-down throw near Cincinnati's end zone was intercepted by Germaine Pratt.

Notable Player Stats

  • Joe Burrow, QB, CIN: 24-of-34 passing for 244 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs
  • Ja'Marr Chase, WR, CIN: 9 catches for 116 yards
  • C.J. Uzomah, TE, CIN: 6 catches for 64 yards, 1 TD
  • Derek Carr, QB, LV: 29-of-54 passing for 310 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
  • Zay Jones, WR, LV: 5 catches for 61 yards, 1 TD
  • Josh Jacobs, RB, LV: 13 carries for 83 yards; 4 catches for 44 yards

Joe Burrow's Fast Start Enough for Bengals

While relying on someone to be a franchise savior is a lot to ask, these are the moments the Bengals selected Burrow for with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 NFL draft.

He looked more than ready for the challenge during Cincinnati's opening drive as he targeted Chase down the field until he found C.J. Uzomah for the game's first touchdown. It was something of a statement for the young signal-caller in his first playoff game after he announced himself as one of the best in the league during his second regular season.

While the Bengals failed to completely put the game away early by settling for field goals with short fields after a turnover and special teams blunder from Las Vegas, Burrow continued his excellence by fitting throws through tight windows and evading pressure with his legs.

His second touchdown pass came as he scrambled to the right and unleashed a throw to Tyler Boyd in the back of the end zone right before stepping out of bounds on a play that featured an errant whistle but still stood in controversial fashion.

To Las Vegas' credit, its defense bounced back in the third quarter and kept the Bengals out of the end zone to remain well within striking distance. It also put Burrow firmly under the spotlight for the fourth quarter, especially after Daniel Carlson's third field goal cut the lead to seven.

Even when Burrow responded with a monster third-down conversion to Chase and another strike to his No. 1 wide receiver to get into scoring range, the home team once again had to settle for a field goal. It at least pushed the advantage to two scores again, but there would have been far less doubt if even one of Evan McPherson's four field goals turned into a touchdown.

It turns out that was enough thanks to a strong showing from Cincinnati's defense, but the offense will need to convert more of its chances to continue advancing in later rounds.

Missed Chances, Mistakes Cost Raiders

While the Raiders came in as underdogs on the road, few teams entered the playoffs with more momentum.

After all, Las Vegas won its final four regular-season games to rescue its playoff hopes after it looked nothing like a postseason team with a 6-7 start. However, that momentum was nowhere to be found for much of a first half that was defined by missed opportunities and self-inflicted mistakes as visitors fell behind by double digits early.

Carr's fumble on Trey Hendrickson's strip-sack set the Bengals up with a short field, as did a 3-and-out after Peyton Barber grabbed a kickoff as it was heading out of bounds at his own 2-yard line.

The Raiders also stalled for multiple field goals on promising drives and appeared well on their way to a blowout loss, but Carr turned things around right before intermission with an 80-yard drive that ended with a touchdown pass to Zay Jones. That cut the halftime deficit to 20-13, and, perhaps for the first time all game, put some apprehension in the crowd.

That apprehension continued when Josh Jacobs found success between the tackles with injuries to Hendrickson and Larry Ogunjobi along Cincinnati's defensive front, but the Raiders continued to undercut their own comeback efforts by settling for field goals instead of touchdowns throughout the game.

Las Vegas had plenty of opportunities, especially in the second half when its defense kept Burrow and Co. out of the end zone, and it created another one when Carr found DeSean Jackson for a key fourth-down conversion. Still, even that drive ended in another field goal and the offenses continued to mirror each other with field goals instead of touchdowns.

It was only fitting that the game ended on yet another missed opportunity in scoring position for the Raiders, and Carr's final throw was intercepted right outside the Bengals' end zone.

What's Next?

The Bengals advanced to the divisional round and will play the top-seeded Tennessee Titans if the favored Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills win their games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots, respectively.

Derek Carr Rumors: Raiders Expected to Discuss New Contract with QB After Playoffs

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly prepared to discuss a contract extension with quarterback Derek Carr following the team's playoff run.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on NFL Countdown that Saturday's wild-card round game against the Cincinnati Bengals is a key moment for Carr, who has one season left on his current five-year, $125 million contract:

2022 is scheduled to be the final year of Carr's contract, and there are expected to be contract discussions between Carr and the team this offseason. That has been the plan all along to address it during the offseason. But there have been so many quarterbacks with speculation linked to Vegas in the past. We heard about Tom Brady, we heard about Russell Wilson. The fact of the matter is, with Derek Carr making his first [playoff] start today, he can take another step to cementing that job.

Carr's numbers dipped a bit in 2021 compared to the two previous seasons, but he still put together a solid year to help the Raiders post a 10-7 record.

The 30-year-old Fresno State product completed 68.4 percent of his throws for 4,804 yards, which ranked fifth in the NFL, to go along with 23 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 17 games. He ranked 13th in ESPN's Total QBR (52.7) and received a 76.3 overall grade from Pro Football Focus.

Carr told reporters Friday reaching the postseason is just the first stop on what Las Vegas wants to accomplish:

For me, it's an exciting time. Obviously, it's something I've dreamed of since I was drafted. That's all I want to do is get to the playoffs and try and win a championship. And the fact that we're in the tournament, it's really cool. Again, like I said afterwards, I'm super thankful. I've worked my tail off. I've prayed that I could experience that one day and I get to. It's cool.

But at the same time, my goal wasn't just to make the playoffs; it was a part of it. But you always have bigger goals and bigger dreams and you're always trying to achieve more. So, for me, it's exciting, but still trying to keep that laser focus on the job at hand.

The California native's performance in his first career playoff start is just one of the factors that will help determine whether he remains the team's franchise quarterback, though.

Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported the Raiders will go through a coaching search after the playoffs to determine whether interim head coach Rich Bisaccia retains the role, and the decision "will be tied in" to Carr's future.

Las Vegas owner Mark Davis also plans to evaluate general manager Mike Mayock, and a change atop the front office could also impact Carr, per Rapoport.

Barring a blockbuster trade, the Raiders would struggle to find a major upgrade on Carr during the offseason. The free-agent market features an uninspiring group of quarterbacks, and it's generally viewed as a relatively weak year for QBs in the draft.

So, even if Las Vegas opts against giving Carr a lucrative extension this offseason, there's a chance he could return to finish the final year of his contract in 2022.

Pittsburgh Steelers fans were gnawing their fingernails off on Sunday night as the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders headed into overtime. The stakes couldn't be higher—if one of those teams won, the Steelers were headed to the playoffs. If they tied, however, the Steelers were out.

So when Daniel Carlson hit the game-winning field goal for the Raiders as time expired, the celebration stretched from the Sin City to the Steel City.

And Steelers fans kept it going into Monday, donating to charities Carlson has been involved in over the years:

The Raiders and Steelers have long been rivals, dating back to some legendary matchups in the 1970s. But at least for one night, the two fan bases were united in their playoff-bound joy.

Glazer: Raiders Eye 'Rock Star' HC, Could Make Trade; Mike Tomlin, Sean Payton Linked

The Las Vegas Raiders have not given up on acquiring a "rock star" head coach after the departure of disgraced former coach Jon Gruden.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports said the Raiders could explore trading for a coach who is currently employed, pointing to Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin as potential candidates.

Rich Bisaccia has served as the Raiders' interim coach since Gruden resigned after emails he sent containing racist, anti-gay and sexist language were leaked to the media. Gruden sent the emails, which were uncovered as part of an investigation into the Washington Football Team's workplace culture, while employed at ESPN.

Bisaccia has led the Raiders to a 6-5 record and a chance at clinching a playoff berth Sunday night against the Los Angeles Chargers. Even though he's done a solid job of holding things together during the Gruden fallout, it seems more likely than not that the Raiders will go for a full-scale revamp.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported the Raiders are likely to fire general manager Mike Mayock, who was brought in to work alongside Gruden. A new GM would likely want his choice of head coaching candidates, which could doom Bisaccia's candidacy.

The Raiders handed Gruden a 10-year contract when they plucked him out of the broadcast booth in 2018, so they're far from risk-averse. Owner Mark Davis clearly values having name recognition on the sidelines, and a coach such as Payton or Tomlin would move the needle.

That said, it's unlikely the Steelers or Saints would be particularly keen on getting rid of their long-tenured coaches without getting significant draft-pick compensation.

Rich Bisaccia Dismisses Raiders Playing for Tie vs. Chargers to Clinch Playoff Spot

Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia isn't concerning himself with a scenario that could see the Raiders reach the playoffs by tying the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night.

The Week 18 finale is setting up to be a win-or-go-home scenario for both the Raiders and the Chargers, but there is a way they could both only need a tie to qualify for the postseason.

If the Indianapolis Colts lose to the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier in the day, a tie in the Raiders vs. Chargers game will get both teams into the playoffs as wild cards.

In response to being presented with that scenario, Bisaccia said the following, per ESPN's Paul Gutierrez:

"I don't think I ever passed math, so I don't even know what the hell you just talked about. All I know is we're really excited about our opportunity in front of us on Sunday night, and we're going to look to put our best foot forward. We're going to look to put a product on the field that all of Raider Nation can be proud of. So that's kind of our focus right now."

While the scenario is possible, it seems unlikely since the 9-7 Colts are 15.5-point favorites against the 2-14 Jaguars.

It should be noted, however, that Indianapolis has not won a road game against the Jags since 2014.

As of now, the Raiders and Chargers are tied in the standings with matching 9-7 records after Las Vegas upset the Colts on the road last week and L.A. beat the Denver Broncos at home.

The Chargers hold the tiebreaker, meaning they technically own the No. 7 seed as of now. If the Colts beat the Jaguars, the Raiders would need to beat the Chargers at home to make the playoffs, and the Chargers would have to either beat or tie the Raiders to make the playoffs.

In their previous meeting this season, the Chargers defeated the Raiders 28-14 in Los Angeles in Week 4.

Ties are a rare occurrence in the NFL, as there has only been one tie in each of the past three seasons. Neither the Raiders nor Chargers have played a tie game since 1973, which was before the advent of overtime.

The family of John Madden will light the Al Davis Memorial Torch before Sunday's game between the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers, per Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.

Madden, who coached the Raiders from 1969 to '78, died on Dec. 28.

John's wife Virginia headlines the group that will light the torch, including his sister, his sons and his grandsons. Raiders owner Mark Davis had lit the torch on the day Madden died:

The NFL held a league-wide moment of silence before the Week 17 games to honor Madden, although the Raiders were on the road against the Indianapolis Colts. Sunday night's game against the Chargers will be the final one across the NFL in the 2021 regular season.

Madden led the Raiders to a Super Bowl title after the 1976 season, accumulating a 103-32-7 career record. The Hall of Famer spent the next three decades as a broadcaster for a variety of networks, also lending his name to the Madden NFL video games.

Jim Harbaugh Is the Coach Who Can Fix the Las Vegas Raiders

Whether the Las Vegas Raiders win or lose against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, owner Mark Davis should do what he did four years ago and make a big splash in the head coaching hiring cycle.

Four years after luring Jon Gruden out of the Monday Night Football booth, Davis can send shockwaves through the NFL landscape by convincing Jim Harbaugh to leave Michigan for the bright lights in Vegas.

According to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, Harbaugh may have some interest in an NFL comeback. One of his sources said, "I think it's real."

Feldman connected the dots to two teams, the Chicago Bears, who selected Harbaugh in the first round of the 1987 draft, and the Raiders because of personal connections to the franchise.

"The Raiders head coaching job might be tough for him to say no to given his ties to the organization—he started his coaching career there in 2003—and the fact that there's already a solid quarterback in place in Derek Carr," Feldman wrote. "He's also friends with Raiders owner Mark Davis."

Just like the hiring situation with Gruden in 2018, Davis' history with a renowned head coach could work in his favor. Harbaugh currently leads his alma mater at Ann Arbor, but perhaps the allure of pro competition brings him to Vegas, where he could elevate a potential playoff team over the hump.

For most of the past two decades, the Raiders have fielded a mediocre or non-competitive squad with just two winning seasons since 2002.

With Carr and a much-improved defense, Harbaugh doesn't have to fix a lot in terms of player personnel. At every stop in his career, Harbaugh has helped a team make immediate strides in the standings. His coaching style and ability to assemble a good staff can turn a .500 team into a perennial contender.

Harbaugh started his head-coaching career at the University of San Diego in 2004 and led the FCS program to its first conference title in 2005. The Toreros repeated as Pioneer Football League champions in the following year.

From there, Harbaugh went to Stanford—a program that went 1-11 before his arrival—and improved its record to 12-1 by his fourth and final season. Sure, he had quarterback Andrew Luck in the latter two campaigns, but the Cardinal progressively won more games each year under his tutelage.

Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh

Harbaugh remained in California but made the jump to the professional ranks, accepting the San Francisco 49ers' job. In four seasons with the team, he amassed an impressive 44-19-1 record and guided the club to three consecutive NFC Championship Games.

During his stint with the 49ers, Harbaugh put together a quality coaching staff that included play-callers Greg Roman, who's fielded seven top-12 scoring offenses in nine seasons, and Vic Fangio, one of the league's best defensive-minded coaches with four top-10 scoring units over the past five terms.

Harbaugh isn't afraid to make tough roster decisions either. As the head coach of the 49ers, he benched quarterback Alex Smith, whom the club selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, for Colin Kaepernick. In that year (2012), San Francisco advanced to the Super Bowl.

After an 8-8 campaign in San Francisco, Harbaugh went to Michigan and elevated the proud program from mediocrity to double-digit wins in four out of six years minus the COVID-19-shortened campaign in 2020.

In 2021, the Wolverines won their first conference title since 2004 and beat Ohio State, which dominated the Big Ten for nearly two decades.

With a no-nonsense approach, Harbaugh has shown he can surround himself with brilliant football minds to optimize talent across the roster. The 58-year-old has the ideal personality for a Raiders squad that has younger guys in key positions and had some off-field issues this season.

Furthermore, the Raiders have made some disastrous draft picks, struggling to develop players within their schemes.

Over the past three drafts, Vegas has missed the mark on multiple early-round picks, including defensive end Clelin Ferrell, safety Johnathan Abram, cornerback Damon Arnette, wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. and linebacker Tanner Muse. Meanwhile, rookie first-rounder Alex Leatherwood has had a rough season, moving from tackle to guard. He's allowed eight sacks and committed 14 penalties, per Pro Football Focus.

Jim Harbaugh
Jim Harbaugh

Despite the Raiders' draft whiffs, Harbaugh can work with a team on the cusp of a playoff breakthrough. In his first NFL coaching stint, he didn't have full control over the roster, so Davis can pair him with general manager Mike Mayock to revamp weak areas on the depth chart.

While critics may question Harbaugh's ability to win big games because of a Super Bowl loss and his 1-5 record against Ohio State during his time at Ann Arbor, he would walk into a situation with a team that's ready to win now with a good quarterback.

With that said, Harbaugh would have to strengthen the run game, which is something he's done at Michigan and in San Francisco.

In 2021, the Wolverines fielded the 15th-ranked rushing offense (out of 130 in FBS). Every year between 2011 and 2014, the 49ers had a top-eight ground attack.

Harbaugh can bring the physical element back to the Raiders offense, which would bode well for Carr, who's flourished with a top-10 rushing offense—think 2016—and performs well in play-action designs.

He's thrown for 880 yards (17th) on 89 play-action pass attempts (tied 22nd) this season. Carr would certainly welcome more of that concept with a stronger run game. Vegas has the fourth-fewest rush attempts and yards going into Week 18.

Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia
Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia

For now, the Raiders will finish the season with Rich Bisaccia, who's done a great job considering the circumstances, taking over in an interim role for Gruden after Week 5. Since then, Vegas has gone 6-5.

Though Bisaccia may lead the Silver and Black to a playoff berth, Davis cannot lose sight of the big picture.

When you compare Bisaccia's resume to Harbaugh's track record, the choice, if Davis has to make one between the two, isn't close. The former hasn't held a full-time head-coaching position in his career, which spans nearly four decades. The latter successfully uplifted football clubs at every stop and boasts almost a 70 percent winning percentage at the NFL level.

In Feldman's report, he pointed out that Davis hasn't made a firm decision on Bisaccia yet, but if Harbaugh wants to coach the Raiders, you take his call and give him the job.

Raiders Rumors: Rich Bisaccia 'In the Mix' for Permanent Head Coaching Position

Las Vegas Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia reportedly remains under consideration to take over the coaching staff on a full-time basis in 2022.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Bisaccia is "at the very least, in the mix" ahead of the Raiders' regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Bisaccia has guided Las Vegas to a 6-5 record since taking over the head coaching role in October following the resignation of Jon Gruden after it was revealed Gruden sent racist, misogynistic and anti-gay emails between 2011 and 2018.

The Raiders own a 9-7 overall record and will clinch a postseason berth with a win over the Bolts as a wild card in the AFC.

Bisaccia began his coaching career at Wayne State in 1983 and coached for nearly four decades at the college and pro levels before getting his first chance to lead a staff.

Most of his time was spent as a special teams coordinator, including with the Raiders before the promotion to interim head coach and with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2002 to 2010. He won the Super Bowl XXXVII title with the Bucs in 2002 on Gruden's staff.

In November, Raiders general manager Mike Mayock told ESPN's Paul Gutierrez he'd spent years putting in a good word for Bisaccia when head coaching opportunities became available before he joined the front office.

"Rich Bisaccia is the best leader I have ever been around," Mayock said. "... I'm going to back this son of a gun unequivocally."

Bisaccia's status could come down to Sunday's result.

If he leads the Raiders to a win over the Chargers—and on a subsequent playoff run—it would be difficult for the front office to go in a different direction. A loss, however, likely sparks a more extensive coaching search.

Las Vegas will be the underdog against Justin Herbert and Co., but it's riding a three-game winning streak and playing some of its best football of the season ahead of the critical contest.

Raiders CB Nate Hobbs Arrested on DUI Charge, Was Allegedly Passed out in Car

Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs was reportedly arrested early Monday morning and charged with misdemeanor DUI, per TMZ Sports.

Police reportedly found Hobbs asleep at the wheel of his car on a parking lot exit ramp.

He was arrested after reportedly struggling with sobriety tests after officers made contact with him.

The incident came after the Raiders defeated the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Hobbs was found outside The Cromwell Hotel in Las Vegas around 4 a.m. local time and was booked into the Clark County Detention Center at 6:38 a.m.

Hobbs, a rookie fifth-round draft pick, has appeared in 15 games this season while starting nine. He ranks fourth on the team with 67 tackles this year, adding one interception and one forced fumble.

The 22-year-old played a key role in the Raiders' 23-20 win over the Colts to keep their postseason hopes alive, playing 80 percent of defensive snaps while totaling four tackles.

His status is now in question for the team's Week 18 battle against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The latest arrest comes about two months after former Raiders teammate Henry Ruggs III was arrested after his involvement in a car crash that killed a woman. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and reckless driving after reportedly posting a blood alcohol content of twice the legal limit in Nevada.

The Raiders also released former first-round pick Damon Arnette in November after the cornerback was seen on video brandishing a gun while threatening to kill someone.
