Damian Lillard's 34 points and 13 assists propelled the Portland Trail Blazers to a 123-109 road win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 1 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series at Ball Arena.

Portland outscored Denver 38-25 in the third quarter to take a 96-86 lead into the fourth. Denver cut the edge to four points in the fourth on two occasions but could not come any closer.

Nuggets center Nikola Jokic's 34 points and 16 boards led Denver, whose bench combined for only 20 points.

Notable Performances

Trail Blazers PG Damian Lillard: 34 points, 13 assists

Trail Blazers SG CJ McCollum: 21 points, 6 rebounds

Trail Blazers F Carmelo Anthony: 18 points

Nuggets C Nikola Jokic: 34 points, 16 rebounds

Nuggets SF Michael Porter Jr.: 25 points, 9 rebounds

Nuggets PF Aaron Gordon: 16 points, 9 rebounds

Lillard Leads Portland To Win

It was Dame Time in Denver on Saturday as Lillard started Portland's playoff run on the right foot.

Lillard's connection with Carmelo Anthony was working early, with the point guard drawing in the defense before kicking it out to the 10-time All-Star for his second straight three in the first quarter:

Anthony caught fire, scoring 12 points in a 2:21 span and hitting another three following a Lillard dish:

Lillard continued to get the rest of his teammates involved, slicing a pass to Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic to slash Denver's lead to three in the third quarter:

Sometimes, Lillard took care of business himself, like when he took on Denver forward Michael Porter Jr. and nailed a jumper during a late third-quarter run:

Or when he stuck a deep three despite a double team to cap a 8-0 run:

That may not have even been his most impressive bucket of the night, as he drilled a quick, off-balance three to give Portland a 113-103 edge:

New York Times bestselling author Shea Serrano posited a question after watching Lillard's dominance:

In the end, Lillard's dominance was simply too much for Denver to overcome in Game 1.

Jokic Stars in Defeat

It was a rough second half for the Nuggets. They sorely missed the clutch scoring and play of point guard Jamal Murray, who suffered a torn ACL. Denver went just 11-of-36 from three-point range, while Portland shot 19-of-40 from deep.

Despite the three-point differential and Lillard's excellent night, Jokic kept the shorthanded Nuggets in this game, delivering a dazzling array of moves en route to stuffing the star sheet.

Jokic's patented Sombor Shuffle move made a first-quarter appearance, with the NBA MVP frontrunner hitting a jumper over Blazers center Enes Kanter for a early four-point lead:

That was one of many excellent first-half plays from Jokic, who had 22 points and seven dimes by halftime:

https://twitter.com/NBA/status/1396312316103307265

Jokic kept it up in the third thanks in part to this spin move:

However, Denver faltered down the stretch, with Portland going on an 11-0 run after Jokic hit a turnaround jumper. The Blazers got hot, while Denver couldn't muster much offense en route to defeat.

Jokic was still great, and ex-Nugget great and Basketball Hall of Famer Alex English approves:

He's certainly capable of willing his team to victory on any given night. That wasn't the case Saturday, but the 26-year-old delivered another MVP-like performance nevertheless.

Michael Porter Jr. Is '1 of the Up-and-Coming Stars in the League,' Says NBA Scout

One reason to be optimistic about the Denver Nuggets heading into the postseason is Michael Porter Jr.'s ascent during the 2020-21 campaign.

An anonymous NBA scout told Josh Robbins and Sam Amick of The Athletic that Porter is "one of the up-and-coming stars in the league."

Porter's raw talent was as high as any player in the 2018 draft, but uncertainty about his health after a back injury at Missouri caused him to fall to Denver with the 14th pick.

After sitting out the entire 2018-19 season, the 6'10" small forward played sparingly last year. He showed potential with 9.3 points on 50.9 percent shooting and 4.7 rebounds per game in 55 appearances.

Coming into this year fully healthy, Porter took a massive step forward. The 22-year-old ranked third on the Nuggets with 19.0 points per game and finished ninth in the league with a 44.5 three-point percentage.

Porter's size and scoring ability have drawn comparisons to Kevin Durant.

Nikola Jokic is the presumptive MVP for this season and capable of lifting Denver's floor on his own, but the team will need a second star to step up going into the playoffs.

With Jamal Murray out for the playoffs after tearing his ACL during an April 12 game against the Golden State Warriors, the Nuggets need Porter to take his game to another level if they want to make a deep run.

The third-seeded Nuggets will play the sixth-seeded Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving Lead Nets to Crucial 125-119 Win vs. Nikola Jokic, Nuggets

The Brooklyn Nets snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up a massive victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday, earning a 125-119 win at Ball Arena.

A week ago the Nets were battling with the Philadelphia 76ers for first place in the Eastern Conference. Entering Saturday, Brooklyn was three-games back of first and tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for second place with the Bucks holding a tiebreaker over the Nets.

Despite the continued absence of James Harden (hamstring), Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving combined for 64 points, holding off MVP front-runner Nikola Jokic and a Nuggets team that entered 7-3 over their last 10 games.

With four games left in the regular season, Brooklyn can still make a play for the No. 1 overall seed in the East, but the margin for error remains as slim as possible.

Notable Performers

Kevin Durant, SF, Brooklyn Nets: 33 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists

Kyrie Irving, PG, Brooklyn Nets: 31 points, 4 assists

Nikola Jokic, C, Denver Nuggets: 29 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists

Michael Porter Jr., SF, Denver Nuggets: 28 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists

Nets Snap Losing Streak

Following the club's fourth consecutive loss earlier this week, the Nets clubhouse was steadfast in their belief the victory draught would only make them tougher in the playoffs. Now that the streak has been snapped, it's on Brooklyn to prove the second half of the prophecy true.

Especially after four straight losses nearly became five straight in Denver.

The Nets had to rally back from down 21 in the first half and come up with multiple stops on Jokic in the paint to secure a win Saturday. Against a Nuggets team that should've been worn down, Brooklyn looked far more like the club playing for the second time in as many nights.

Denver shot 54.3 percent from the floor in the first half, while the Nets struggled to get much offense from anyone not named Durant or Irving. Finally, in the third quarter, Blake Griffin (20 points) was able to find his shot, scoring 16 in a frame for the first time since 2019 as the Nets shot a season-high 84 percent in the third overall.

And that still wasn't enough to take the lead back from Denver. Not until the Nuggets went cold in the fourth quarter (15 points) were the Nets able to take charge. Brooklyn regained the lead with just under six minutes remaining for the first time since Durant knocked down a three-pointer off the opening tipoff.

It would be Durant's defense down the stretch that locked up the win as he contested a hook shot at the rim from Jokic with 20 seconds left to preserve a three-point lead. Moments later, it was Jokic missing another runner that allowed Brooklyn to run out the clock and end the losing streak.

Now squarely in second place, Brooklyn has four games left to build up momentum for the playoffs. Saturday was a solid start, but things are far from solved in Nash's clubhouse.

Nuggets Bench Steps Up

Playing back-to-back elite opponents would’ve been reason enough to forgive the Nuggets for a lackluster performance on either end of their back-to-back this weekend.

Going from the rival Utah Jazz to the talent-laden Nets club is tough in the best of circumstances. Trying to defeat both in as many nights without the likes of Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon and Will Barton only made things tougher.

At least that was the case until Denver’s role players got a chance to showcase their skills.

Playing against a desperate Brooklyn team, Nuggets head coach Michael Malone had no choice but to tap into his club’s depth and see if fresher legs could make a difference. Very quickly the answer was a resounding yes.

Starting with 17 points in the first nine minutes for Michael Porter Jr.—who seemingly caught fire off the opening tip by making his first five three-pointers—the Nuggets earned massive contributions from the likes of Facundo Campazzo (19 points, five assists), Austin Rivers (12 points, five rebounds) and Markus Howard (13 points).

In fact, Howard scored more points Saturday than he had in any single month this season.

That was more than enough to complement another stellar night from Jokic, who once again served as the motor in Denver’s offense.

Campazzo, in particular, has done a fantastic job filling in for Murray (ACL), following up an April in which he averaged 7.9 points and 4.6 assists by upping his production to 14.4 points and 5.5 assists per game in May. As long as Denver has this type of depth available, it’ll be extremely tough for any team to beat it on a given night—let alone in four of seven games once the playoffs start.

A back-to-back that could’ve thrown the Nuggets off their rhythm instead proved just how in sync the title contenders are.

Nets' Steve Nash Says Nuggets' Nikola Jokic Is 'Clearly' 2021 NBA MVP

Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash doesn't have to think too hard about who should win MVP this season.  A two-time MVP during his career, Nash believes Denver Nuggets forward Nikola Jokic has the award all locked up.

Entering Saturday's contest against Brooklyn, Jokic is averaging 26.4 points, 10.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists in 67 games while shooting 56.8 percent from the floor.

The 26-year-old has looked even better lately, scoring at least 30 points in four of his last six outings.

Nash and the Nets previously got a look at Jokic's skillset back in mid January with the center going off for 23 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds in a 122-116 Brooklyn victory.

The Nets will attempt to sweep a two-game season series against Denver on Saturday—and try to slow down Jokic in the process. Lately that has seemed like a near-impossible task.

The Nuggets are 7-3 in their last 10 games and continue to thrive despite losing guard Jamal Murray to an ACL tear last month. Jokic finished ninth in MVP voting last season, picking up 18 points in the voting as Giannis Antetokounmpo (962 points) claimed his second-straight victory.

A year earlier, in 2018-19, Jokic finished fourth with 212 points.

Now the 26-year-old appears to be running away with the award after late-season injuries have hampered MVP resumes for LeBron James and Joel Embiid.

Jokic can take another big step towards locking up the league's top individual honor by taking down Brooklyn and their former MVP in Kevin Durant.

Anthony Davis, Lakers Hold off Nikola Jokic, Nuggets as LeBron James Sits with Injury

The play-in tournament still lingers, but the Los Angeles Lakers at least stopped their downward tumble with a much-needed win.

Los Angeles defeated the Denver Nuggets 93-89 in Monday's Western Conference showdown at Staples Center. Anthony Davis led the way in LeBron James' absence for the victors, who improved to 37-28 and bounced back from their three-game losing streak and 1-6 mark in the previous seven.

A solid showing from Nikola Jokic was not enough for the Nuggets, who fell to 43-22 as their five-game winning streak came to an end.

AD, Lakers Avoid Brutal Collapse

Everything looked to be coming up perfectly for the Lakers on Monday outside of the fact that LeBron (ankle) and Dennis Schroder (health and safety protocols) were not on the floor.

The Portland Trail Blazers lost to the Atlanta Hawks, bolstering Los Angeles' chances in the race to avoid the play-in tournament. Davis also looked as smooth as he has since returning from his calf and Achilles injury that kept him out for more than two months while staking the Lakers to a halftime lead.

Denver had no answer for him on the blocks, and he also protected the rim on the defensive side.

Throw in a notable performance from the league's top-rated defense and Marc Gasol going into takeover mode for a stretch when Andre Drummond dealt with foul trouble with multiple threes and impressive outlet passes, and the Lakers were on cruise control with a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter.

And then the Nuggets came storming back with Jokic hitting mid-range shots and floaters and even had a chance to take the lead on a Michael Porter Jr. three that rimmed out with just more than a minute remaining.

The Lakers also benefited from a questionable offensive foul on Facundo Campazzo that wiped out a Porter three, and Davis made a clutch shot in the lane with 41 seconds left to push the lead back to four.

Fittingly, he also blocked Campazzo's three to clinch the win and end the Lakers' losing streak in dramatic fashion.

Denver's Offense Goes Missing for Too Long

It would have been easy for the Nuggets to fold after Jamal Murray was lost for the season on April 12's loss to the Golden State Warriors.

After all, they are in the middle of a daunting Western Conference with a number of championship contenders and lost their playmaking guard. Instead, they entered Monday's contest with a 9-1 record since the setback thanks largely to the MVP-level play of Jokic and Porter's ascension as a legitimate second option.

That was anything but the case in the early going, as the Lakers' wing defenders cut off Porter's penetration and pressed into his space to prevent him from any clean looks.

Jokic also struggled from the field as the visitors fell behind by intermission, although JaVale McGee provided a spark off the bench to keep the Nuggets within striking distance when so many others were having trouble against Los Angeles' stout defense.

The Lakers weren't the only ones to play solid defense, as Denver relied on its own ability on that end to stay close with Campazzo and Aaron Gordon spearheading the effort with five steals and four blocks, respectively.

Still, the short-handed offense without Murray, Will Barton and Monte Morris remained stagnant for extended stretches and became even more of an issue when PJ Dozier went down with an injury.

The Nuggets shot just 25 percent from deep, turned it over 12 times and didn't score more than 24 points in a single quarter. Even with a late push, that simply wasn't going to cut it against the defending champions.

Nuggets Clinch 2021 NBA Playoff Spot with Trail Blazers' Loss to Hawks

For the third straight season, the Denver Nuggets will be challenging for the NBA championship after clinching a playoff berth.

The Nuggets locked up a spot in the Western Conference playoffs with the Portland Trail Blazers' loss to the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.

Coming off an appearance in the Western Conference Finals last season, expectations were understandably high in Denver in the 2020-21 campaign. A 1-4 start did lead to some initial concerns, but head coach Michael Malone was able to quickly turn things around.

The main source of success for the Nuggets has been an MVP-caliber season from Nikola Jokic. The three-time All-Star is averaging career-highs with 26.2 points on 56.8 percent shooting (41.2 percent from three), 10.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists per game.

Beyond Jokic, though, the Nuggets have been able to assemble a deep and talented roster that plays perfectly alongside him.

Jamal Murray was fantastic before he was lost for the year to injury with 21.2 points per game. Michael Porter Jr. is one of the most efficient young scorers in the NBA. The 22-year-old ranks eighth in the league with a 44.3 three-point percentage on 6.1 attempts per game.

Denver general manager Calvin Booth also struck gold at the trade deadline. He acquired Aaron Gordon and Gary Clark from the Orlando Magic in exchange for Gary Harris, R.J. Hampton and a 2025 first-round draft pick.

Gordon was the main piece of the deal for the Nuggets, and he's been fantastic in his brief stint with the organization, especially on the defensive end.

Denver has been steadily building up to becoming one of the best teams in the Western Conference. Its breakthrough season was 2018-19 when it won the Northwest Division with a 54-28 record before losing to the Portland Trail Blazers in the second round of the playoffs.

Last season saw the Nuggets become the first team in NBA history to erase two 3-1 series deficits in the same playoffs. They were ultimately sent home by the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers in five games in the Western Conference Finals.

A few tweaks to the roster this season have the Nuggets squarely in the mix as one of the favorites to reach the NBA Finals. There will be plenty of competition along the way, but few teams can match Denver's upside and depth.

Report: Austin Rivers Expected to Sign Nuggets Contract Through Rest of Season

The Denver Nuggets are set to sign Austin Rivers for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported the news, which had largely been expected since the Nuggets signed Rivers to a 10-day contract earlier this month.

Rivers is averaging 5.2 points and 2.0 assists in 24.2 minutes through his first five games with the Nuggets. He's struggled with his shooting stroke, knocking down 34.5 percent of his shots overall and 16.7 percent from three-point range.

"Coming in here, my whole pitch to them is just positive energy at all times," Rivers told reporters. "Whenever my name is called, be in attack mode, be aggressive, and just try to help this team win. … To be a part of a team like this, this late in the season going into the playoffs, you can't ask for a better situation. I'm so thankful."

Rivers played 21 games with the New York Knicks earlier this season before being traded to Oklahoma City as part of a three-team deal that sent George Hill to the 76ers. The Thunder subsequently waived him to allow him to sign with a contender.

Denver became a natural fit after it lost Jamal Murray to an ACL tear in mid-April. Will Barton has also been out of the lineup with a hamstring strain, giving Rivers an opportunity for more playing time.

Nikola Jokic Has Had 'Around 56' MVP Moments This Season, Nuggets HC Says

NBA fans often look for MVP moments to separate the top contenders for the award as the season nears its end. Denver Nuggets coach Michael Malone thinks this mindset would sell center Nikola Jokic short.

"Nikola has got around 56 moments where he's shown he's the MVP," Malone said, per Mark Medina of USA Today.

Jokic has had his big games, scoring at least 40 points five times, including a career-high 50 earlier this season. He had 47 points in a recent win over the Memphis Grizzlies with 31 of those points coming in the second half and overtime.

The center has also come through with clutch highlights throughout the year.

It's the consistency and overall production that set Jokic apart, however, as he's setting career highs with 26.2 points, 11.0 rebounds and 8.7 assists per game while shooting 40.9 percent from three-point range. He easily leads the NBA with 13.3 win shares, per Basketball Reference, 3.6 ahead of Rudy Gobert in second place.

Instead of coming through with a few big moments, Malone believes Jokic proves himself on a nightly basis.

Nuggets' Will Barton out for 'Foreseeable Future' Because of Hamstring Injury

The Denver Nuggets expect to miss guard Will Barton for the foreseeable future because of a hamstring sprain, head coach Michael Malone told reporters Saturday.

Barton suffered the injury in the first quarter of the Nuggets' 118-97 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Friday and was quickly ruled out for the rest of the night. Malone called the strain "pretty significant" and did not lay out a timetable for his return.

In a tweet Saturday, Barton called the injury a "lil setback" and said he expects to be back this season.

With only 12 games left on the Nuggets' schedule after Saturday's contest against the Houston Rockets, Barton would need to heal quickly to get back on the floor before the postseason.

Through 56 games, the Memphis alum is averaging 12.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Western Conference contender. Denver is clinging to the No. 4 seed with a 38-21 record, six games back of the Utah Jazz for first place.

Led by MVP candidate Nikola Jokic up front, the Nuggets are quickly running out of backcourt depth as Barton joins Monte Morris (hamstring) and Jamal Murray on the injury report. Murray is done for the rest of the year after suffering a torn ACL earlier this month.

Look for Austin Rivers, Shaq Harrison, PJ Dozier and Markus Howard to earn a bit more playing time while Barton is out as Denver tries to get its lineup as healthy as possible for the playoffs.

The Denver Nuggets announced the signing of guard Austin Rivers to a 10-day contract Tuesday.

A deal had been expected since last week, with the Nuggets looking to fortify their guard rotation after Jamal Murray suffered a season-ending ACL tear.

Rivers has been a free agent since being waived by the Oklahoma City Thunder on March 28. He was acquired by Oklahoma City as part of a three-team trade at the deadline that sent George Hill to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Here is a look at how the Nuggets' updated roster will look.

C: Nikola Jokic / JaVale McGee / Bol Bol
PF: Aaron Gordon / Paul Millsap / JaMychal Green / Zeke Nnaji
SF: Michael Porter Jr. / PJ Dozier / Vlatko Cancar
SG: Will Barton / Austin Rivers
PG: Monte Morris* / Facundo Campazzo / Markus Howard

(*out with injury)

Rivers will likely be thrust immediately into the Nuggets rotation with Murray and Monte Morris out of the lineup. The Duke product averaged 7.3 points, 2.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 21 games with the New York Knicks before being shipped to Oklahoma City.

A veteran playing for his sixth NBA franchise, Rivers brings playoff experience and secondary ball-handling acumen that should help the Nuggets—at least temporarily.

Denver has managed to win its first three games without Murray and has no plans of giving up on its goal of winning a championship in 2021. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that Rivers winds up giving them a boost in the postseason.Â
