Kyle Lee overcame an 18-second deficit on the final leg of the mixed 4x800-meter open water relay to give Australia the lead over the United States after Day 1 of the 2022 Duel in the Pool.

The Americans and the Aussies used opposite strategies in the opening race of the three-day event, which took place Friday at Bondi Beach in Sydney. The U.S. used its two men's swimmers at the front of the relay, while the Australians led with their women's swimmers.

  • Australia: Chelsea Gubecka, Kareena Lee, Kai Edwards, Kyle Lee
  • United States: Charlie Clark, David Johnston, Bella Sims, Tylor Mathieu

It set the stage for an entertaining finish as Lee trimmed the Americans' advantage to nine seconds at the 400-meter mark and then surged ahead inside the final 20 meters for the win, per Martin Pegan of the Australian Associated Press.

"My team put me in a very good position," Lee said. "I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get them, but I just tried to do my best and catch them. It was a pretty close finish. Once I went past Tylor I could see that she was still at my feet so I knew I couldn't back off at the end."

Based on the event's scoring rules, Australia will carry an 8-6 lead into Day 2 as the competition shifts indoors to the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre.

The United States won each of the first seven editions of the Duel in the Pool, which debuted in 2003. After three iterations of the U.S. vs. Australia, the event shifted to a U.S. vs. Europe theme before going on hiatus following the 2015 competition.

Clark, a college junior who competes on the Ohio State men's swimming team, remembers attending that event seven years ago:

"It was so fun getting to swim a race in such an iconic place like Bondi Beach. It is honestly a dream come true to do this. It's been an amazing opportunity to represent Team USA.

"I went to the last Duel in the Pool they had in 2015 in Indianapolis, and I watched. It was two weeks before our middle school championship and I wanted to get some motivation. So, to be able to compete for Team USA the next time they have Duel in the Pool, it's like what I said before, a dream come true."

After the single event on Day 1, there are 20 races on Saturday's schedule, beginning with the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay.

A total of 40 events will take place before the competition wraps up Sunday.

NBA legends and former Miami Heat teammates LeBron James and Dwyane Wade are joining forces to executive produce a Netflix series about the 2008 United States men's Olympic basketball team.

The documentary, which is entitled The Redeem Team, will feature "unprecedented Olympic footage and behind-the-scenes material," thanks to Netflix working with the International Olympic Committee for the first time ever, according to Angelique Jackson of Variety.

Jon Weinbach, who directed the critically acclaimed The Last Dance docuseries on Michael Jordan, will serve as the director of The Redeem Team as well.

Wade, who was an integral part of the 2008 Olympic team along with James, said the following regarding the documentary:

"In 2008, I played with heroes of mine, All-Stars, friends and future teammates. Outside of winning and showing the world that we were still the most dominant, our other big challenge was changing the perception of what everyone thought about the NBA and USA Basketball! I'm excited for everyone to get an opportunity to go behind the scenes and see all the work that went into this iconic team—The Redeem Team!"

Led by legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski on the sidelines and late Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant on the court, the 2008 Olympic team succeeded in putting Team USA back on top of the basketball world.

Four years earlier at the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, the United States settled for a disappointing bronze medal, which served as a catalyst for a campaign to put together the best possible team and coaching staff for Beijing in 2008.

That proved to be a success, as the roster was highlighted by current and future Hall of Famers such as James, Wade, Bryant, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh.

The United States went undefeated in the tournament and beat Spain 118-107 in the final to win gold.

The 2008 Olympics may have also set the stage for the formation of the Heat's "Big 3" in 2010, as LeBron and Bosh joined Wade in Miami, and went on to lead the Heat to four consecutive NBA Finals appearances and two championships.

Viewers across the world can begin watching The Redeem Team on Netflix when it officially drops on Oct. 7.

Former ski mountaineering champion Adèle Milloz died Friday at age 26 while climbing in the French Alps.

The French Mountain and Climbing Federation announced Milloz's death Saturday (via Gina Martinez of CBS News). The organization said it's unclear how she and another woman she was practicing with died.

According to Adam Sage of the Times, Milloz and the woman, 30, were climbing up the Aiguille summit in the Mont Blanc mountain range. Milloz was working to become a mountain guide.

Eyewitnesses saw Milloz and the woman fall and alerted emergency personnel.

Milloz was the gold medalist in ski mountaineering at the 2017 Winter Military World Games in Sochi, Russia. Per USA Today's Steve Gardner, she retired as a competitive skier in 2019 and focused instead on becoming a mountain guide.

Ski mountaineering, also known as skimo, combines climbing up a slope and then skiing down. The discipline was added to the schedule for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Joel Embiid is one step closer to playing for the French national team.

Former NBA forward Boris Diaw, who now serves as France's general manager for international competition, said Embiid has been accepted as a citizen and will soon apply to play for the country.

"His [Joel Embiid's] request for naturalization has been accepted," Diaw told L'Equipe. "We know that he’s still waiting for the French passport. When he obtains it, then he can start the process and apply for a FIBA license for the national team.

"He would've liked to play this summer if he hadn't been injured. But he underwent hand surgery and didn't return to basketball."

Embiid was born and raised in Cameroon but has family in France. The process of him joining the French team has been several months in the making, setting the potential stage for Embiid to be part of the 2024 Olympic roster.

FIBA rules allow one naturalized citizen to be part of each country's roster. Embiid would instantly be the best player on the French national team, which earned a silver medal in the 2020 Summer Games.

The current group of players eligible for the 2024 Olympics include Rudy Gobert, Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, Frank Ntilikina, Theo Maledon and Victor Wembanyama. The last player is considered the overwhelming favorite to be the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA draft.

If Embiid is added to that crop of players, the United States may face its most formidable test on the international stage since the Gasol-led Spain national team of the late 2000s and early 2010s.

The return of Allyson Felix provided Sydney McLaughlin with added motivation ahead of the 4x400-meter relay at the 2022 World Athletics Championships.

"We're a family; we stick together," McLaughlin said after the United States' gold-medal triumph. "Allyson came out of retirement to get us here, so we wanted to do this."

Felix wasn't planning to run after the 4x400 mixed relay, with Team USA claiming bronze in that event. However, she was approached about competing in the 4x400 women's relay and helped the U.S. qualify for the final.

For her efforts, Felix collected her 14th gold medal from the World Championships, though she didn't run in the final. The quartet of McLaughlin, Talitha Diggs, Abby Steiner and Britton Wilson posted a time of 3:17.79 to cruise past Jamaica.

The United States earned 33 medals, including 13 golds, at the 2022 World Championships to lead the overall team standings.

Noah Lyles broke the American record in the men's 200 meters Thursday night with a 19.31-second performance to pull away from the field at the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Lyles eclipsed the previous mark held by Michael Johnson (19.32) by one-hundredth of a second, and Johnson was on hand to witness the passing of the torch.

The clock initially showed a tie at 19.32 before the official time confirmed the new record.

"I didn't want to see '32,' I didn't want to share a record," Lyles said, per Eddie Pells of the Associated Press. "Nobody wants to share a record. I think even Michael Johnson doesn't want to share a record. So I was just begging it to change."

Johnson added: "He just said he had a great race. He said he worked harder than he ever did. I thought he ran a great curve. And so, it was fantastic."

Lyles led an American sweep of the 200-meter podium. Kenny Bednarek (19.77) took home silver, while Erriyon Knighton (19.80) captured bronze.

The United States also swept the medals in the men's 100 meters and the men's shot put as part of a dominant showing in Oregon.

Team USA has won 22 of the 87 medals handed out at the event so far. No other country has more than eight (Ethiopia).

"America's, like, scooping up medals left and right," Lyles said. "This feels great because I've been waiting for America to come out and dominate since I got on the platform."

Lyles' new American mark ranks fourth in track history behind two Usain Bolt times (19.19 and 19.30) and one by Bolt's Jamaican countryman Yohan Blake (19.26).

It's the third World Championships gold for the 25-year-old Florida native, who in 2019 won the 200 meters and was part of the U.S.' winning 4x100-meter relay team.

Lyles won his first Olympic medal last summer when he secured bronze in the 200 meters with a time of 19.74 seconds.

This year's World Athletics Championships are scheduled to wrap up Sunday.

Ryan Lochte's two bronze medals from the 2008 Beijing Olympics sold for $89,423 on Thursday at RR Auction, according to Darren Rovell of the Action Network.

Lochte put all of his Olympic silver and bronze medals up for auction with the proceeds going to the Jorge Nation Foundation, which raises money for children with serious illnesses to go on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to a destination of their choosing.

"I don’t want people to think I didn’t care about the medals," Lochte told Nick Zaccardi of NBC Sports earlier this month. "I cherish them, but they’re just sitting in my closet collecting dust."

"The Ryan Lochte Collection" listed by RR Auction included his lone silver medal from the 2004 Olympics in Athens, his two bronze medals from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and his two silvers and one bronze from the 2012 London Games.

The auction also included his custom 14-karat white gold Olympic ring and his Breitling watch.

Lochte also said he will probably auction some of his Olympic gold medals in the future for charity, per Zaccardi. He won six gold medals over his Olympic swimming career.

Olympic silver medalist Kim Glass suffered multiple facial injuries after getting assaulted in Los Angeles on Friday.

Glass said Monday in an Instagram story that a man threw a metal object at her (h/t Stefanie Dazio of the Associated Press). She said she had multiple fractures in her face and her left eye was swollen shut.

Glass said the man was a good distance away from her when he "flung" the object, which she described as a pipe or bolt, toward her.

According to Dazio, local authorities took a man, Semeon Tesfamariam, into custody. An L.A. police spokesperson said Tesfamariam was arrested on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon.

Glass is a decorated volleyball player. The 37-year-old represented the United States in team volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Team USA reached the final, where it lost to Brazil.

John Gouveia, the former president of Team USA Softball, was arrested in California's Sacramento County on April 14 and charged with eight counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child younger than 14.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office announced the charges Tuesday and described the situation as an "active and ongoing criminal investigation." The office asked members of the community to come forward with further information.

Neither USA Softball nor the Hayward Area Recreation and Park District, where Gouveia also worked, are linked to the situation as the child was not involved in either organization, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office.

Gouveia, 61, was released from custody on $250,000 bail in April. He ended his tenure with USA Softball in 2019.

The sport's governing body posted a statement on Twitter:

Joe Patterson currently serves as the president of USA Softball, which oversees more than 150,000 youth teams as well as the senior national team.
