Can the Boston Celtics Unlock These Secrets to Slowing Giannis?

BOSTON — The Milwaukee Bucks' Game 1 win over the Boston Celtics did more than just assert the Bucks' control of the series.

It was a wake-up call for the NBA's most consistently elite team since Jan. 1 and carried a simple message: The championship still runs through the squad with the most dominant player in the world.

Dealing with Kevin Durant in Round 1 now feels like a trial run for playing against Giannis Antetokounmpo, who presents a different challenge for the Celtics.

Antetokounmpo is a wrecking ball when driving toward the rim, capable of finishing with and through contact. Boston has talked about putting up a defensive wall to limit his aggressive drives, but in Game 1, those walls were more like sliding doors.

Still, there were a few silver linings for Boston to try to build on in its hopes of limiting Antetokounmpo's impact.

Get Bigs Switching onto Giannis

One of the keys to Boston's defense being so successful this season was its ability to switch everything. While the idea of Al Horford or Robert Williams III defending Antetokounmpo for an entire game isn't ideal, both are good enough defenders to hold their own for stretches.

Antetokounmpo had a 24-point, 13-rebound, 12-assist triple-double and didn't have much trouble against Grant Williams and Boston's other wings and guards. But the Celtics' center duo did its job in making Antetokounmpo work for his points.

Horford spent more time guarding Antetokounmpo (5:11 of game time) than any other player. The Bucks star shot just 2-of-10 from the field with one assist and three turnovers in that span.

Robert Williams was also excellent against the two-time league MVP, limiting Antetokounmpo to three assists and one turnover while forcing a miss in each of his three shot attempts.

But even when you defend him well, Antetokounmpo still has the ability to score, as seen in the alley-oop he threw off the backboard to himself after being defended well by Grant Williams.

Nonetheless, Horford and Robert Williams are capable enough to prevent Antetokounmpo from consistently imposing his will in the paint.

Force Giannis Off the Stars

In Game 1, Antetokounmpo defended nine different players, who combined to shoot 5-of-15 when he was the primary defender.

Antetokounmpo was especially impactful against Boston's top two scorers, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Using his length, athleticism and uncanny instincts, Antetokounmpo gave both Tatum and Brown fits inside the paint as well as on the perimeter.

Boston's one-two punch of went a combined 2-of-10 shooting from the field when Antetokounmpo was the primary defender. Going into Game 2, getting Tatum and Brown to challenge someone other than Antetokounmpo has to be a priority. Both should look to target the likes of Grayson Allen or Wes Matthews, or get Brook Lopez out on the perimeter in space.

If Antetokounmpo continues to keep Tatum and Brown in check, the Celtics will have to generate points elsewhere. The most likely suspects? Marcus Smart, Horford, Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard, all of whom struggled to make shots in Game 1.

In any case, minimizing Antetokounmpo's impact must be a central focus for Boston as it looks to shore up its play amid what should be some noticeable adjustments on the Celtics' from Game 1 to Game 2.

None of its changes may end up making a difference, but should Boston continue its formula from Game 1, then Tatum and Co. are destined to find themselves on vacation one month earlier than they'd like.

Giannis After Bucks' Game 1 Win Over Celtics: 'I Thrive Through Physicality'

Playoff basketball tends to present a far different challenge from the regular season. Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo relishes the general change in playing style.

"I thrive through physicality," he said after his team's 101-89 Game 1 victory over the Boston Celtics on Sunday at TD Garden. "I love feeling beat up after games."

The final score illustrates how the games slow down and become more physical in the playoffs. The Bucks and Celtics averaged 115.5 and 111.8 points per game, respectively.

Antetokounmpo can expect to draw plenty of fouls, too, because that's one way to neutralize the two-time MVP a bit. He's a career 71.8 percent shooter from the charity stripe and went 6-of-11 on Sunday.

The 27-year-old isn't a historically poor foul shooter, but that's clearly one of the few weaknesses in his game.

In general, the Celtics did a pretty good job on Antetokounmpo, holding him to 9-of-25 shooting overall. Still, he finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. The Greek Freak also delivered the moment of the game with the alley-oop to himself.

The road won't get any easier for Giannis and the Bucks.

The Celtics had the best defensive rating (106.2) in the regular season, per NBA.com, and they put the clamps on Kevin Durant in the first round. Durant's 38.6 percent clip from the field was his lowest since his first playoff trip in 2009-10.

Boston head coach Ime Udoka and his staff might already be hard at work tweaking their defensive game plan ahead of Game 2.

If his comments are any indicator, Antetokounmpo will be ready.

NBA Playoff Standings 2022: Final Regular-Season Records, Seedings and Bracket

A single spot in the NBA playoff standings changed hands on the final day of the regular season.

The Milwaukee Bucks dropped out of the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference after they decided to rest Giannis Antetokounmpo and most of their other top contributors.

That allowed the Boston Celtics to move up one position with their win over the Memphis Grizzlies. Boston is now the most likely first-round opponent for the Brooklyn Nets.

Brooklyn secured home-court advantage in the East play-in round by beating the Indiana Pacers. The Nets need to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers for the second time in a week to set up a showdown with the Celtics.

The Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz picked up victories on Sunday night to ensure the top 10 in the Western Conference did not change.

Golden State remained in the No. 3 seed thanks to a 40-point performance out of Klay Thompson, while Utah had an easy night against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The postseason begins with the play-in round games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The first-round series open up on Saturday and Sunday.

NBA Playoff Bracket

Final Regular-Season Standings

Eastern Conference

1. Miami (53-29)

2. Boston (51-31)

3. Milwaukee (51-31)

4. Philadelphia (51-31)

5. Toronto (48-34)

6. Chicago (46-36)

7. Brooklyn (44-38)

8. Cleveland (44-38)

9. Atlanta (43-39)

10. Charlotte (43-39)

The only change in the Eastern Conference standings on Sunday was the flip between the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Milwaukee opted to rest its starters to have a chance of dropping to the No. 3 seed and avoid the Brooklyn Nets in the first round.

The Bucks did just that after the Celtics won on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies, which had nothing to play for with the No. 2 seed in the West already clinched.

Boston's win puts it on a collision course with the Nets for the first round. Brooklyn hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday in the first play-in contest in the East.

Brooklyn defeated Cleveland last Friday to take over the No. 7 spot in the East standings, and Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving will be difficult for the Cavaliers to stop over four quarters in an elimination setting.

The Brooklyn-Cleveland loser faces the Atlanta-Charlotte winner for the East's No. 8 seed on Friday night.

Atlanta and Charlotte face off in an elimination contest on Wednesday night in Georgia. The Hawks and Hornets split their regular-season series. The Hornets won the last meeting on March 16.

The Hawks closed with seven wins in their last nine games. The Hornets enter on a three-game winning streak. The one significant victory in that stretch was a road win over the Bulls.

The winner of Friday's play-in contest squares off with the Miami Heat in the first round. That series will likely begin Sunday because of the turnaround needed for the victor.

Philadelphia and Toronto are confirmed postseason opponents. The Sixers will be without Matisse Thybulle for the road games because he does not meet Canada's vaccination mandate.

Milwaukee-Chicago is the other confirmed first-round playoff matchup in the East.

Western Conference

1. Phoenix (64-18)

2. Memphis (56-26)

3. Golden State (53-29)

4, Dallas (52-30)

5. Utah (49-33)

6. Denver (48-34)

7. Minnesota (46-36)

8. Los Angeles Clippers (42-40)

9. New Orleans (36-46)

10. San Antonio (34-48)

Golden State and Utah set the top six West teams in place with their respective victories on Sunday night.

The Warriors locked into the No. 3 seed with a win over the New Orleans Pelicans. That result kept the Dallas Mavericks in fourth place.

Dallas received a brief injury scare when Luka Doncic left Sunday's game early with a calf injury. According to NBA correspondent Marc Stein, the Mavs are calling the injury a left calf strain.

Doncic has at least six days to rest up before the Mavs embark on their playoff series with the Jazz.

Utah remained ahead of the Denver Nuggets with its win over the Portland Trail Blazers. Quin Snyder rested Donovan Mitchell for the clash against the tanking Blazers.

Dallas and Utah are aligned with the Phoenix Suns in the top half of the Western Conference bracket.

Golden State and Denver face off in the first round, with the winner likely taking on the Grizzlies in the conference semifinals.

Memphis' first-round opponent will be known Tuesday, when the Minnesota Timberwolves clash with the Los Angeles Clippers.

The loser of that contest awaits the New Orleans-San Antonio winner on Friday in an elimination showdown.

Multiple sources informed the Bleacher Report NBA staff that there has been an alarming lack of clarity on who should win the 2022 MVP award. And so, on the heels of the regular season's conclusion, we decided to cook up some...

76ers' Joel Embiid Clinches 2021-22 NBA Scoring Title Ahead of Giannis Antetokounmpo

Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid officially clinched the scoring title Sunday after the Milwaukee Bucks ruled out Giannis Antetokounmpo for the team's season finale versus the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Embiid is currently averaging 30.6 points per game, just ahead of Giannis (29.9 PPG). LeBron James averaged 30.3 points per game for the Los Angeles Lakers this season but didn't play enough games to be eligible for the scoring title, leaving him out of the running.

That a center won the scoring title in a modern game that emphasizes floor spacing and versatile guards and wings, and deemphasized post play, is all the more impressive.

Embiid is also the first center to average over 30 points per game since Moses Malone in 1981-82.

The scoring title will be one of the pillars of Embiid's MVP case, with the veteran big man in the running for the award alongside Antetokounmpo and Denver's Nikola Jokic. But he's also averaged 11.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.5 blocks per game, shooting 49.9 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from three and 81.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Embiid also anchors Philly's defense, serving as one of the game's better rim protectors. Add it all up, and the big man believes he should be considered the league's best player this season.

"If it happens, great," he told reporters earlier this week. "If it doesn't, I don't know what I have to do. I'll feel like they hate me. I feel like the standard for guys in Philly or for me is different than everyone else."

It would be hard to knock MVP voters for siding with either Jokic or Antetokounmpo—both have had absurdly good seasons. But it's hard to ignore the historically good season Embiid has had, and he would be one of the harder-luck MVP runners-up in recent memory if he doesn't take home the award.

If nothing else, however, the scoring title is his.

NBA Playoffs 2022: Known Schedule, Bracket Picture Before Final Games of Season

The Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks are three combined wins away from setting up one of the most anticipated first-round series in NBA history.

Brooklyn needs to beat the Indiana Pacers on Sunday to secure the No. 7 spot in the standings, which will make it the host of one of two Eastern Conference play-in games.

The Nets' play-in round opponent will be determined by the Bucks' result versus the Cleveland Cavaliers. That game and the Brooklyn-Indiana clash occur at the same time Sunday afternoon.

Milwaukee needs a victory to lock in the No. 2 seed, which would land it a matchup against the winner of the Nets' play-in game. Brooklyn can face either Cleveland or the Atlanta Hawks for the right to take on the Bucks. Atlanta jumps up to the No. 8 spot with a win over the Houston Rockets and a Cleveland loss to Milwaukee.

The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers will be waiting in their respective locker rooms to see what the Bucks do. Boston and Philadelphia play in the second time window Sunday. Neither team can land the No. 2 seed if Milwaukee wins.

The Western Conference has far less confusion in its remaining seeding scenarios. The Golden State Warriors need to beat the New Orleans Pelicans to hold on to the No. 3 seed. The Utah Jazz must defeat the Portland Trail Blazers to land the No. 5 seed.

Known Playoff Schedule

The NBA released the schedule for the play-in rounds Saturday night.

The two teams that advance from each conference will either start the first round Saturday or Sunday, when all eight of the series begin.

Eastern Conference

1. Miami (53-28)

2. Milwaukee (51-30)

3. Boston (50-31)

4. Philadelphia (50-31)

5. Toronto (48-33)

6. Chicago (45-36)

Play-In Standings

7. Brooklyn (43-38)

8. Cleveland (43-38)

9. Atlanta (42-39)

10. Charlotte (42-39)

All eyes will be on the Brooklyn Nets and Milwaukee Bucks in the early window of play Sunday.

The Nets are expected to blow out the Indiana Pacers, who have spent the past month playing for the best possible draft position. Indiana is also coming off a Saturday afternoon clash with the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Nets had a day off following their win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Cleveland is not guaranteed to set up a rematch with Brooklyn because it has to deal with the Bucks. Milwaukee needs a victory over the Cavs to clinch the No. 2 seed ahead of the Celtics and the 76ers. The Bucks hold a one-game advantage over both squads going into Sunday.

The Cavs are 2-8 in their past 10 games. They dealt with injuries to Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Mobley returned Friday, but they still fell on the road in Brooklyn.

A Milwaukee win would keep Boston and Philadelphia away from the No. 2 seed, and it would open the door for Atlanta to grab the No. 8 spot in the East. The Hawks visit the tanking Houston Rockets on Sunday. They should win that game and will likely get updates throughout the contest on how the Cavs are faring in Milwaukee.

The Charlotte Hornets will likely be the No. 10 seed because Atlanta should beat the Rockets. The Hornets will visit the No. 9 seed in the play-in round.

Boston dictates the race for the No. 3 seed. The Celtics can clinch the No. 3 seed with a win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night. Philadelphia needs to beat the Detroit Pistons at home and have the Celtics lose to the Grizzlies to jump a spot in the standings.

The No. 2 seed would be up for grabs if the Bucks fall to the Cavs, but at minimum, Boston will be playing for the No. 3 seed and the right to play the Chicago Bulls.

Western Conference

1. Phoenix (64-17)

2. Memphis (56-25)

3. Golden State (52-29)

4. Dallas (51-30)

5. Utah (48-33)

6. Denver (48-33)

Play-In Standings

7. Minnesota (46-35)

8. LA Clippers (41-40)

9. New Orleans (36-45)

10. San Antonio (34-47)

The order of the teams seeded third through sixth is the only thing left to play for in the Western Conference.

The simple math in those scenarios requires the Golden State Warriors and Utah Jazz to win their respective games Sunday.

That is likely to happen since the Warriors face a Spurs team that is resting up for its play-in matchup with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Utah visits the Portland Trail Blazers in a contest that could get ugly fast given the state of both rosters.

If those results happen, Golden State would be locked into a first-round matchup with the Denver Nuggets, while the Jazz would be the road team in its opening two contests with the Dallas Mavericks.

Dallas and Denver both need victories combined with losses from the teams one spot ahead of them in the standings to move up one position in the West standings Sunday.

The rest of the playoff scenarios are set in stone. The Memphis Grizzlies will play the winner of the Minnesota Timberwolves versus Los Angeles Clippers play-in round contest.

The Wolves-Clippers loser faces the New Orleans-San Antonio winner with a chance to play Phoenix on the line.
