Jon Moxley Beats Shawn Spears on AEW Dynamite; Kenny Omega and Pac Appear

In just his second match for All Elite Wrestling, Jon Moxley defeated Shawn Spears on the second episode of AEW Dynamite on Wednesday night.
On last week's debut episode of AEW Dynamite, Moxley made a surprise appearance in the main event match pitting Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks against Chris Jericho, Santana and Ortiz. Moxley and Omega brawled around the arena before Moxley planted Omega through a glass table with a DDT.
This week, Omega appeared after the match and threw Moxley a barbed wire bat. Pac then attacked Omega from behind, perhaps setting up an alliance between himself and Mox—or setting up a potential triple threat down the line.
Moxley is set to face Omega at the Full Gear pay-per-view next month after missing their previously scheduled match at All Out due to an elbow infection.
Spears was not featured on the first episode of AEW Dynamite on the heels of his grudge match against Cody at All Out.
With Tully Blanchard in his corner, Spears attempted to pull out all the stops at All Out, but Arn Anderson interfered on Cody's behalf, and the American Nightmare went on to win the contest and establish himself as No. 1 contender for the AEW World Championship.
Wednesday's match offered Spears an opportunity to get back on track provided he could pull off an upset against a major star like Moxley. Meanwhile, Moxley was looking to gain some momentum ahead of his clash with Omega.
Both Moxley and Spears are former WWE Superstars who went by the names Dean Ambrose and Tye Dillinger, respectively.
During their time in WWE, Moxley and Spears were on different ends of the spectrum. Moxley was one of WWE's top stars and held the WWE Championship, while Spears struggled to shake the perception that he was a low-card performer.
Spears has undoubtedly been presented as a bigger star in AEW than he was in WWE, but there were some questions about whether that would continue after losing a big match to Cody.
Simply having a competitive match with Moxley may have been a positive step for Spears, but with Moxley picking up the win, it is clear that he is the one AEW has chosen to push to the top.

Watch Jon Moxley Brutally Attack Kenny Omega in AEW Return After Elbow Surgery

Jon Moxley appeared Wednesday on the debut episode of AEW Dynamite on TNT in Washington, D.C., marking his first on-screen appearance for the company since Fyter Fest in June.
Mox made his impact in a huge way, attacking Kenny Omega during The Elite's main event against Chris Jericho, Ortiz and Santana. Omega and Moxley battled through the crowd and into a backstage VIP area, where Moxley DDT'd Omega through a glass table.
Moxley had been slated to face Omega at All Out in August, but an elbow infection rendered him unable to compete. As a result, Moxley was replaced by Pac, who defeated Omega in upset fashion.
At Double or Nothing in May, Moxley made his shocking AEW debut by appearing after the main event between Jericho and Omega. Just one month removed from his WWE departure, Moxley was already at the zenith of a competing company.
He then saw his first in-ring action for AEW at Fyter Fest, as he defeated Joey Janela in an unsanctioned match.
After that, Moxley primarily focused on New Japan Pro-Wrestling, where he is the IWGP United States champion. The Death Rider competed in the G1 Climax tournament, and it is possible that working so many matches in such a short period took a physical toll.
While a disappointed Moxley could not be at All Out, it was announced at the pay-per-view that the Moxley vs. Omega match would take place at AEW Full Gear in November.
During the time Moxley was out, the dynamic between him and Omega changed significantly. Both men were receiving face reactions when their rivalry began, but Moxley was acting like a heel in many respects by attacking Omega.
After the loss to Pac, which represented Omega's second consecutive defeat at a big pay-per-view, he underwent something of a character transformation reminiscent of his Cleaner gimmick from New Japan.
Now, Omega is bordering on being a heel, while Moxley is more of an antihero the fans naturally gravitate toward.
Regardless of how they are presented, the fact that Moxley is back and presumably healthy is huge for AEW since he is among the company's top few stars along with Omega and Jericho.
AEW needs as much star power as it can get when going head to head against a stacked NXT roster on Wednesday nights, and as a former world champion in WWE, Moxley possesses it in spades.

Best Booking Options for Chris Jericho, Jon Moxley on AEW Dynamite's TNT Debut

The wrestling world is ready to change forever when All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite makes its TNT debut on October 2.
Two of the biggest mainstream stars on the AEW roster are Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley, and wrestling fans can’t wait to see what these veterans have in store for the industry during the first episode of the new show.
Here are the best booking for AEW’s first world champion and the company’s biggest signing.
Chris Jericho Needs a Little Help From His Friends
In the main event of the first Dynamite episode, Jericho will team up with two mystery partners to take on Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks in a six-man tag match. Naturally, the wrestling world wants to know who will help Y2J.
Jericho on his own has enough beef with Omega from their storied rivalry in New Japan and AEW, but add in the fact he has been verbally crushing the executive vice presidents for not thanking him, and there is true heat in the storyline.
To take down the Jackson brothers and Omega, Jericho needs to find a team willing and able to take on the best. He needs to look no further than Santana and Ortiz, especially after the former Impact Wrestling champions debuted at All Out and beat down the Young Bucks.
As two of the top tag team wrestlers in the business and a marquee signing for AEW, Santana and Ortiz being added to the six-man battle will produce the kind of main event that would set the tone for Dynamite moving forward.
With so much star power in one match, the competition on Wednesday is going to get heated.
Jon Moxley Aiming for Kenny Omega
Speaking of Dynamite’s main event, Omega needs to keep his head on a swivel, as AEW officials announced Moxley would be in the building. After missing All Out with MRSA, the former WWE champion will be looking to make major headlines.
Moxley is a man who lets his actions speak for themselves, but he has been off the grid since missing the August pay-per-view. With anticipation brewing about what he will do next, wrestling fans will be on the edge of their seats the whole night.
Just like WWF would wait until the last moments of Raw before hitting Stone Cold Steve Austin’s music to maximize the impact, Ambrose should keep people waiting all night and show up when the crowd is at a fever pitch.
With Moxley vs. Omega already announced for Full Gear in November, AEW should air promos from both men early in the episode talking about their feud and upcoming match. Fans will begin to wonder if that’s all they would see from Moxley, making his eventual attack on Omega even better.
Regardless of how they get there, Moxley must attack Omega when he is at his most vulnerable and decimate him for the comments made following the news of his MRSA diagnosis. The two men need to turn this program back into a blood feud over the next month.
Add in the fact that Moxley’s interference could be what eventually costs Omega and the Young Bucks the victory, and the main event would help cement Santana and Ortiz as top stars while also furthering multiple storylines.

Jon Moxley vs. Kenny Omega Announced for AEW Full Gear PPV

All Elite Wrestling announced Wednesday the long-awaited match pitting Jon Moxley against Kenny Omega will take place Nov. 9 as part of the AEW Full Gear pay-per-view at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore.
Moxley was forced to withdraw from his scheduled clash with Omega at All Out last Saturday because of MRSA in his elbow.
Omega instead faced off with the debuting Pac, formerly known as Neville in WWE, who'd been scratched from previous matches at the company's Double or Nothing and Fyter Fest events.
Pac won by referee stoppage after locking the longtime New Japan Pro-Wrestling standout in his Brutalizer finishing hold.
Meanwhile, Moxley said he expected to complete his recovery in time for AEW's new weekly show on TNT, which is scheduled to premiere Oct. 2. It led the speculation he would face off with Omega that night to create interest in the new show.
Although Wednesday's announcement doesn't completely eliminate that possibility, it's now more likely the weekly show will instead be used to help build the storyline for a month before the PPV.
The showdown between Moxley and Omega, who also serves as an executive vice president of the company, has been at the forefront of many wrestling fans' minds since both superstars were confirmed as members of the AEW roster.
It sounds like they'll have to wait two more months to see what should be a Match of the Year candidate.
