Report: Nets Never Made 'Substantial Contact' with Quin Snyder After Steve Nash Exit

Nov 3, 2022

The Brooklyn Nets reportedly didn't make much of an attempt to gauge former Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder's interest in the team's head coaching job after firing Steve Nash this week.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, there was "no substantial contact" between the Nets and Snyder in terms of discussing the vacancy.

Instead, the expectation is that the Nets will hire suspended Boston Celtics head coach Ime Udoka as their new head coach. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday that a formal announcement confirming Udoka as the team's next head coach was expected "soon."

For now, Jacque Vaughn is serving as the interim head coach of the Nets amid their disappointing 2-6 start.

Despite having a roster led by Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Ben Simmons, the Nets have been a nonfactor in the Eastern Conference so far this season.

They were more of a threat in the previous two seasons under Nash, but even then they performed below expectations with second- and first-round playoff exits.

The Nets hired Nash as the head coach in 2020 despite his lack of coaching experience, hoping that the two-time NBA MVP and Basketball Hall of Famer would be able to communicate effectively with the team's star players, but it never seemed to click.

If the Nets finalize the hiring of Udoka, they will bring back a coach who was on Nash's staff in Brooklyn during the 2021-22 season.

Udoka left the Nets to become head coach of the Celtics. He led Boston to a 51-31 record and reached the NBA Finals in his only year with the organization.

Shortly before the start of the 2022-23 campaign, Udoka was suspended for allegedly making unwanted comments toward a female staffer, and Joe Mazzulla was named the interim head coach.

Snyder seemingly would have been worth heavy consideration. Before resigning from his position during the offseason, Snyder was head coach of the Jazz for eight seasons.

During his tenure, Snyder posted a 372-264 record and led Utah to the playoffs in each of the past six seasons.

The biggest knock against Snyder was a lack of playoff success, as the Jazz failed to make it beyond the second round during his time as head coach.

If the Nets are indeed off the table, Snyder may have to wait to see what jobs are available to him next offseason.

Myles Turner Rumors: Lakers Trade Target Seeking $20M Per Year on Next Contract

Wherever Myles Turner ends up playing at the end of this season, signing him to a long-term contract is expected to cost a team a lot of money.

Per HoopsHype's Michael Scotto, there is a belief around the NBA that Turner is seeking at least $20 million per season on his next contract.

Turner has spent his entire career with the Indiana Pacers, though his name seems to pop up in trade rumors at least once every year.

The 26-year-old is at the center of early-season trade rumblings because of previous rumors connecting him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Shams Charania, Sam Amick and Jovan Buha of The Athletic reported last month the Pacers and Lakers had multiple talks during the offseason about a deal involving Russell Westbrook.

Multiple iterations of the trade were proposed, including some with one of Turner and Buddy Hield and others with both going to L.A. No deal was agreed upon at that time, but the teams could re-engage in talks before the Feb. 9 trade deadline.

Appearing on The Woj Pod with ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski this week, Turner even said the Lakers should "take a hard look" at making a move for him.

It seems unlikely the Pacers will keep Turner beyond this season, even if they don't trade him. They tried to add another center over the summer when they signed Deandre Ayton to a four-year, $131 million offer sheet, but he went back to the Phoenix Suns when they chose to match it.

The Pacers are still rebuilding and may look to bring in more long-term assets. Turner and Hield are the best trade chips they have on the roster right now.

Turner is known for his defensive prowess in the paint. He has averaged at least two blocks per game in each of the last four seasons, including leading the league in 2018-19 (2.7) and 2020-21 (3.4).

While not an imposing offensive player, Turner has made himself into a positive with the ball. He has averaged at least 12 points per game in each of the previous seven seasons and is a career 34.8 percent three-point shooter.

Heat Rumors: Victor Oladipo Not 'Anywhere Close' to Return from Knee Injury

As the Miami Heat looks for an offensive spark amid a slow start, it doesn't sound like Victor Oladipo is very close to making his season debut.

On the latest episode of The Hoop Collective podcast (h/t Jonathan Sherman of HeatNation.com), ESPN's Brian Windhorst said Oladipo is not "anywhere close" to playing in games.

The Heat announced Oladipo was held out of practice on Oct. 18 due to left knee tendonosis.

Head coach Erik Spoelstra told reporters later that same day he didn't "want to put any expectations out there about Vic," though he was "extremely encouraged" about the work Oladipo put in during training camp and the preseason.

There was hope Oladipo could play a key role off the bench for Miami during the 2022-23 campaign. He appeared in each of the team's final 15 playoff games last season, including a 23-point effort in a 97-94 win over the Atlanta Hawks in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference first round.

Injuries have derailed Oladipo's career since he made back-to-back All-Star appearances. He has only played 96 regular-season games since the start of the 2018-19 season.

A ruptured quad tendon suffered on Jan. 23, 2019, when Oladipo was playing for the Indiana Pacers, has been the main source of his health issues. The 30-year-old missed 12 months rehabbing from the original injury.

Oladipo initially announced he wouldn't return to play when the 2019-20 season resumed in the Orlando bubble to do rehab work on his quad tendon, but he changed his mind shortly before the Pacers' first game.

The Pacers traded Oladipo to the Houston Rockets in January 2021. He made 20 starts with the Rockets before being dealt to the Heat two months later.

Oladipo had a second surgical procedure on his quad tendon in May 2021 that prematurely ended his season. The Heat signed Oladipo to a two-year contract extension in July.

Miami has won back-to-back games following a 2-5 start, but its offense ranks 19th in rating (111.7) and 26th in points per game (109.1).

NBA Rumors: Draymond Green Trade Not an Option for Warriors amid Contract Talks

Trading Draymond Green isn't yet a consideration for the Golden State Warriors amid their 3-5 start to the 2022-23 NBA season.

ESPN's Zach Lowe reported Thursday the Warriors "have not engaged in any trade talks centered on Green and don't plan to as of now."

Golden State and Green have been approaching a fork in the road for some time. He can opt out of his contract at the end of this season, and unlike Stephen Curry, he may not be the kind of player you reflexively offer a max extension.

The 32-year-old isn't a high-volume scorer (9.0 points per game), nor is he a good shooter (30 percent on three-pointers). And as he gets older, he may struggle to maintain the defensive flexibility that has made him such a critical part of the Warriors' success.

In July, The Athletic's Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson II reported that Green "wants and believes he deserves a maximum contract extension from the Warriors." The team, however, had "no plans to offer Green a maximum extension, and there isn't any current traction on any type of extension."

That was before Green punched teammate Jordan Poole at practice with the regular season on the horizon.

The Warriors didn't suspend Green, and Poole still agreed to a four-year, $140 million extension. Still, the practice incident is bound to be a factor when the front office considers the four-time All-Star's future.

Between the Poole deal and giving Andrew Wiggins a four-year, $109 million extension, the organization is looking at a massive luxury tax bill if Green opts in. The cost becomes higher if he opts out and collects a higher salary.

Despite all of this uncertainty, it's difficult to picture Golden State moving Green unless it's part of a sign-and-trade in the summer.

A team that's attempting to repeat as champions typically doesn't trade a player of Green's stature unless its hand is forced. In addition, just because there might be an impasse at the negotiating table now doesn't mean the Warriors should abandon the idea of re-signing him altogether.

Barring a complete bottoming out akin to winning 15 games in 2019-20, the Warriors should consider a Green trade a nonstarter for now.

Lakers' Matt Ryan Praised by NBA Twitter After Clutch 3 to Take Pelicans to OT

After LeBron James criticized the Los Angeles Lakers for not having shooters earlier this season, Matt Ryan decided to showcase his touch to help the team earn a 120-117 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night.

Ryan hit a game-tying three from the corner as time expired in regulation to send the game to overtime:

Overtime was a slog with both teams combining for just 15 points. Anthony Davis scored four of Los Angeles' points, including a clutch dunk on an assist from LeBron James to give the team a 118-115 lead with 2:23 remaining.

But it was Ryan's heroics that caught the attention of folks on NBA Twitter, who are trying to find reasons for optimism with the Lakers:

Some of the issues that plagued the Lakers in their first six games were still present against the Pelicans. They only made 10 of 36 attempts from three-point range and committed 17 turnovers.

New Orleans also erased a 16-point third-quarter deficit to force overtime.

But the Lakers found enough scoring punch to hang on for the win. James, Davis and Troy Brown Jr. all finished with double-doubles. Russell Westbrook looks like he's getting more comfortable coming off the bench, as he had his most efficient shooting game of the season with 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Ryan scored 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting from three-point range, but he made the biggest shot of his career in the most important moment for Los Angeles. The 25-year-old made the Lakers roster after a strong showing in the preseason.

Wednesday was the best game of Ryan's short NBA career. If he can get comfortable in this offense, the Lakers will at least be more formidable because he provides a shooting touch that's been sorely missing.

The Lakers will go for their third straight win Friday when they host the Utah Jazz at Staples Center.

Lakers' Darvin Ham: Goal Is to Get Russell Westbrook in 6th Man of the Year Race

Nov 3, 2022
Russell Westbrook
Russell Westbrook

Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said it's time to put Russell Westbrook in the discussion among the early NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award contenders.

Westbrook's play has improved since his move to the bench three games ago, including a strong showing in Wednesday night's 120-117 overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans. He tallied 13 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in 25 minutes.

"Trust me, Russ had a hell of a night, man," Ham told reporters. "In the last three games he's been phenomenal. One of my goals selfishly is to get him in the conversation for Sixth Man of the Year at some point, and why not start now? We were dragged in the mud earlier in the game and he came in and he gave us a huge, huge boost. So, his fingerprints were definitely all over this game, in a positive, productive manner."

https://twitter.com/CooperHalpern/status/1588043099795705856

Moving the nine-time All-Star into a reserve role was pretty much the last card the Lakers could play in an attempt to salvage the blockbuster trade to acquire him in August 2021.

Westbrook struggled throughout the 2021-22 season while trying to adapt to an ever-changing role because of injuries to LeBron James and Anthony Davis, and his play during the first few games this season with those fellow stars back healthy was underwhelming, including a loss to the rival Los Angeles Clippers where he shot 0-for-11 from the field.

His play off the bench hasn't been perfect—he's recorded 14 turnovers in the three appearances—but he's been a much more impactful presence in the new role.

The 2016-17 NBA MVP has recorded 49 points, 23 rebounds and 20 assists while shooting 46.2 percent from the field in 90 minutes since the switch.

Leading the second unit when James and/or Davis are on the bench allows him to play a more ball-dominant style, which is always when he's been at his best, and on nights where he's having an efficient offensive performance, he'll likely be on the floor in crunch time.

To the credit of Westbrook, who was the focus of trade rumors throughout the summer, he's taken the role change in stride even though he hadn't come off the bench since his rookie year with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008-09.

"Whatever is needed for me to help the team win, that's what I'll do," the 33-year-old UCLA product told reporters after Sunday's win over the Denver Nuggets.

Most importantly, the Lakers have won back-to-back games to start building some positive vibes after opening the campaign with five straight losses.

L.A. has a lot of work to do before potentially getting back in the contender conversation, both on the floor and in terms of roster moves to acquire some outside shooting, but getting some wins on the board was crucial to avoid the season slipping away early.

Westbrook and Co. will look to continue their resurgence Friday night when the Lakers host the Utah Jazz.

Luka Dončić in 'Rare Air' After 7 30-point Games to Start Season, Mavs' Kidd Says

Nov 3, 2022
Luka Dončić
Luka Dončić

Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd praised point guard Luka Dončić for "carrying the team" after scoring over 30 points in each of the season's first seven games.

Dončić poured in 33 points during Wednesday's 103-100 victory over the Utah Jazz, which brought his scoring average to a league-leading 36.1, which is the third-highest mark through seven games in the NBA over the past 60 years behind only Michael Jordan (37.0 in 1986-87) and James Harden (36.6 in 2019-20), per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

"That's rare air and we get to see that on a nightly basis," Kidd said. "That's pretty cool. A 23-year-old kid that is playing on this level is really, really special to see. He can do it in so many ways, when you talk about posting up or getting to the basket, shooting the three or shooting that little step back. It's really cool to watch, and it just shows the focus that he has right now."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BI9Hyq6JDf4

Scoring at least 30 points in seven straight games to open a season has only been accomplished by two other players: Wilt Chamberlain, who did it twice, and Jack Twyman, per MacMahon.

Dončić's impact goes far beyond his point totals, too. He's also averaging 9.0 assists (fifth in the NBA), 8.9 rebounds (22nd) and 1.7 steals (11th) while shooting a career-best 51.4 percent from the field.

"I'm trying to win games," the early MVP front-runner told reporters after Wednesday's win. "The player that scores more, you're going to win the game. I think today was one of the best games that I've played. Not forcing a lot. Sharing the ball."

It's hard to overstate his value to the Mavs. He's led the team in points and assists in all seven games so far, and he's also paced the team in rebounds four times.

Dallas hasn't been able to fully capitalize on that terrific play with a modest 4-3 record, but its three losses are by just 10 combined points, which is a promising.

"Amazing, but I'm not surprised," Mavs guard Spencer Dinwiddie said about Dončić's play. "Luka's a savant in every sense of the word as it applies to basketball. Nothing shocks me. Obviously, he's young and the best is yet to come. I think he's going to set a lot of records for the Mavs and be in the conversation with the greats."

Dončić will attempt to keep his hot start alive Friday night when the Mavericks welcome the Toronto Raptors (5-3) to the American Airlines Center.

NBA Twitter Raves About Patrick Williams as Bulls Cruise Past Hornets

On a night that saw both DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine struggle from the field, shooting a combined 6-of-27, the Chicago Bulls needed someone to pick up the slack.

Enter Patrick Williams.

The young Bulls forward put up his second straight strong performance after a rough start to the season, pacing the team with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks in Wednesday's 106-88 win over the 3-5 Charlotte Hornets.

Javonte Green (17 points, eight rebounds) and Goran Dragić (16 points) added solid performances off the bench, spoiling a big game from Charlotte's Kelly Oubre Jr. (24 points).

But the night belonged to Williams, and NBA Twitter took notice:

https://twitter.com/msjnba/status/1587970901672431618
https://twitter.com/cmo858/status/1587990387553173504

Williams looked lost out on the court in the team's first four games, averaging 5.3 points per game in those contests. But he's looked like a different player since, especially in Tuesday's 108-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets that saw him put up 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.

It was the sort of production that head coach Billy Donovan believes is regularly attainable for Williams.

"He has to make a decision that this is the kind of player that I want to be, that I know I can be," he told reporters after the game. "It's not like we're putting him in a box and saying, 'Hey, your job is to play defense and pass the ball to people.' He has to take advantage of his opportunities. And I thought [Tuesday] it came from within."

It appeared to come from within on Wednesday as well, on a night when the Bulls really needed their role players to step up. It's a promising sign for the 5-4 Bulls, who will be a much scarier team if Williams has found another gear.

NBA Twitter Blasts Knicks for Blowing 23-Point Lead vs. Hawks

The New York Knicks were beating the Atlanta Hawks 51-28 midway through the second quarter. Their defense was ferocious, and a balanced offense had the Hawks on their heels.

Everything after that point was an abject failure for a Knicks team that has now lost three straight.

Atlanta scored 29 points in the final 6:21 of the first half to cut the Knicks' lead to 65-57 at halftime. The Hawks then took complete control in the third quarter, where they outscored the Knicks 32-10 en route to a 112-99 victory. The Knicks had as many turnovers as points in the third quarter alone.

At one point, the Hawks had outscored the Knicks 79-37 over a 25-minute stretch.

The Knicks simply had no answer for Dejounte Murray, who dropped 36 points on 14-of-27 shooting and nine assists while amassing six of the Hawks' 12 steals. His performance helped the Hawks overcome a cold night from Knicks arch-nemesis Trae Young, who shot 7-of-22 en route to 17 points.

The Hawks notably put up 16 more shots than the Knicks in part because they grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and committed just seven turnovers to New York's 16.

The Knicks' best effort came off the bench thanks to Immanuel Quickley, who posted 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Evan Fournier (three points on 1-of-6 shooting) and Julius Randle (14 points on 4-of-12 shooting) notably struggled for the starting five.

This was a deeply concerning loss for the Knicks, who were coming off a 121-108 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers after being outscored 37-15 in the final quarter. They've lost each of their last three games by double digits to the Milwaukee Bucks, Cavs and Hawks, all of whom have playoff aspirations.

It's a far cry from the Knicks' three-game win streak earlier this season against a trio of losing teams in the Orlando Magic, Detroit Pistons and Charlotte Hornets.

Twitter took the Knicks to task for their collapse.

https://twitter.com/Jasonyc777/status/1587979721224212482

The Knicks will look to bounce back Friday when they visit the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 p.m. ET in Wells Fargo Center.

The Brooklyn Nets, Kyrie Irving and the Anti-Defamation League released a joint statement on Wednesday following Irving's social media posts containing a link to an antisemitic film last week.

The statement included a pledge by the Nets and Irving to donate $500,000 each to "causes and organizations that work to eradicate hate and intolerance in our communities."

https://twitter.com/HowardBeck/status/1587949733213085704

Irving provided a statement:

I oppose all forms of hatred and oppression and stand strong with communities that are marginalized and impacted every day. I am aware of the negative impact of my post towards the Jewish community and I take responsibility. I do not believe everything said in the documentary was true or reflects my morals and principles. I am a human being learning from all walks of life and I intend to do so with an open mind and a willingness to listen. So from my family and I, we meant no harm to any one group, race or religion of people, and wish to only be a beacon of truth and light.

Irving shared a link to the 2018 film Hebrews to Negroes: Wake Up Black America, a "purported documentary" that is "stuffed with antisemitic tropes," falsehoods and "ideas in line with more extreme factions of the Black Hebrew Israelites, which have a long history of misogyny, homophobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, and especially antisemitism," per Rolling Stone's Jon Blistein.

Irving was not contrite when discussing his posts during a contentious postgame press conference Saturday.

"Did I do anything illegal? Did I hurt anybody, did I harm anybody? Am I going out and saying that I hate one specific group of people?" he said to reporters. "It's on Amazon, a public platform, whether you want to go watch it or not, is up to you. There's things being posted every day. I'm no different than the next human being, so don't treat me any different."

Nets governor Joe Tsai decried Irving's decision, however:

And Irving wasn't made available to reporters after Monday's 108-99 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

Neither the Nets or the NBA have taken disciplinary action against Irving, which raised some eyebrows around the NBA community.

"I think he should have been suspended him," Charles Barkley said during Monday's Inside the NBA. "I think Adam [Silver] should have suspended him."

"I think the NBA, they made a mistake," he added. "We've suspended people and fined people who have made homophobic slurs. And that was the right thing to do. If you insult the Black community, you should be suspended or fined heavily."
