De'Anthony Melton Shocks NBA Twitter with 33 Points as Joel Embiid, 76ers Beat Lakers

Joel Embiid was typically awesome on Friday night. But it was a star turn from De'Anthony Melton, of all people, who helped spur the Philadelphia 76ers to victory.

Melton went off for 33 points and seven steals, hitting eight three-pointers in the Sixers' 133-122 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

That spoiled the return to the starting lineup for the trio of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Patrick Beverley.

Joel Embiid added a game-high 38 points to go along with 12 rebounds and five assists in the win. Anthony Davis led the way for the Lakers with 31 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks.

But that's what Embiid—who had as many points by himself in the first quarter (20) as the entire Lakers team—does with some regularity. Melton's huge night, on the other hand, was unexpected.

And it had NBA Twitter shook:

https://twitter.com/RoobNBCS/status/1601408204415848449

The Sixers needed every bit of Melton's shot-making and defense in a game that looked as though it would be comfortable before unraveling into disarray.

Philly led by as many as 18 points with about 10 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Lakers chipped away at that lead, pulling to within three points when Matisse Thybulle inexplicably fouled Austin Reaves during a three-point attempt with just nine seconds remaining.

Reaves promptly hit two of his three free throws, but the Sixers turned over the ensuing inbounds pass and Anthony Davis was fouled.

Davis then missed one of his two free-throw attempts and the game went to overtime, where the Sixers outscored the Lakers 13-2 to secure a game they probably should have easily won in regulation.

But a win's a win. And it wouldn't have happened without Melton's immense performance.

LeBron James, Lakers Blasted by NBA Twitter for Poor OT Shooting in Loss vs. 76ers

The Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Philadelphia 76ers 133-122 in overtime on Friday night at Wells Fargo Center, dropping to 10-15 on the season.

Anthony Davis had a solid outing, finishing with 31 points, 12 rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 36 minutes. However, LeBron James, who returned from a one-game absence due to an ankle injury, struggled.

James finished with 23 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals in 43 minutes. He made 9-of-22 shots from the floor and 1-of-8 shots from deep.

While James' performance was underwhelming, the entire team struggled to get anything going in overtime, scoring just two points in OT after Davis tied it at 120 with a free throw late in the fourth quarter.

Following the loss, James and the Lakers were ripped by NBA Twitter for their subpar late-game performance:

https://twitter.com/Cozamano/status/1601409905528754176

James has been dealing with an ankle injury since a Dec. 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He played the next two games before sitting out Wednesday's game against the Toronto Raptors because of the ailment.

If the Lakers are going to improve this season, it's going to have to start with James staying healthy, though that could be a tough ask at this point, especially considering he appeared in just 56 games last season due to a number of injuries.

Warriors' Steve Kerr: Celtics Have Been 'By Far the Best Team in the League'

The Boston Celtics have put their loss to the Golden State Warriors in the 2022 NBA Finals behind them and are fully focused on lifting the Larry O'Brien Trophy in 2023.

That loss still stings, but the Celtics have shown much improvement since being defeated in the Finals, and they will get the opportunity to show the Warriors what they're made of when they match up for the first time this season on Saturday.

Golden State isn't taking Boston lightly, either, with head coach Steve Kerr telling reporters Friday that the Celtics, led by the duo of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, have undeniably been the best team in the league this year.

"I'm sure the motivation from last year is there and is driving them," Kerr said. "They've been, by far, the best team in the league."

In last season's Finals, the Celtics fell to the Warriors in six games and saw their offense sputter. Boston averaged 100.8 points against Golden State, down from the 105.0 points they averaged in the Eastern Conference Finals and the 111.8 from the regular season.

Reeling from that loss, the Celtics have turned their disappointment into meaningful success this season, and they're reaping the benefits.

While Boston's defense hasn't been nearly as good, the team currently has the best offense in the NBA with a 119.9 offensive rating. The next-closest team is the Phoenix Suns, which have a 116.3 offensive rating.

The Celtics have also greatly improve their shooting. Last season, they shot 46.6 percent from the floor and 35.6 percent from deep. This year, they're shooting 49.3 percent from the field and a league-best 40 percent from beyond the arc.

The meteoric rises of both Tatum and Brown have certainly contributed to Boston's offensive success, but the addition of Malcolm Brogdon and the improvement of players like Grant Williams have helped propel the C's this year.

Beyond shooting, the Celtics have also improved their spacing and off-ball movement. Additionally, they're committing far fewer turnovers this year, averaging just 13.8 turnovers, which is the sixth-best mark in the NBA.

A lot of the team's success can be attributed to interim head coach Joe Mazzulla, who appears to have taken this team to its potential.

The Celtics enter Saturday's game against the 13-13 Warriors with a 21-5 record, and they'll be looking to capture one of their biggest wins of the season.

Woj: 76ers' Tyrese Maxey Should Return from Foot Injury Before Christmas

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is expected to return from his foot injury before Christmas, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday on NBA Today.

Wojnarowski reported on Nov. 19 that Maxey would miss at least three to four weeks with a fracture in his left foot suffered in a Nov. 18 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Maxey suffered the injury when he landed awkwardly on his foot while being fouled. He went on to take his two free throws but exited the game after that and did not return.

On Wednesday, Sixers head coach Doc Rivers provided an update, noting that the 22-year-old still has some work to do in order to return to the court. He said, via Ky Carlin of Sixers Wire:

"Today he ran. Still not jumping though which is a concern, but today he ran. He did not sprint, but he did run up and down the floor. He's not been able to do that. I guess the only concerning thing is he's not been able to jump yet so that would mean he's a ways away, to say the least."

If Maxey returns closer to the longer side of his three-to-four week timeline, he could be back sometime around Dec. 17. The Sixers will face the Golden State Warriors on Dec. 16 before facing the Toronto Raptors three days later.

Maxey's injury was a tough blow to the 76ers. With the Kentucky product sidelined, the team has gone 4-5, including a three-game losing streak that began with a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Nov. 30.

However, Philadelphia struggled even with Maxey in the lineup, going 8-7 to begin the year.

He was having best season, averaging 22.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 15 games while shooting 46.2 percent from the floor and 42.2 percent from deep.

The eighth-place 76ers (12-12) will need Maxey healthy if they hope to better their position in a tough Eastern Conference. That said, they aren't too far from contending for fourth place in the East, which is owned by the 14-12 Brooklyn Nets.

Lakers Rumors: LeBron James to Return from Ankle Injury vs. Joel Embiid, 76ers

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is expected to return to the lineup for Friday's game against the Philadelphia 76ers following a one-game absence, per ESPN's Dave McMenamin.

James missed Wednesday's 126-113 loss to the Toronto Raptors with a left ankle injury.

James had been dealing with an ankle ailment since a Dec. 2 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. He played the following two games—a win over the Washington Wizards and a loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers—before sitting out Wednesday's game against Toronto, which was the second night of a back-to-back for the Purple and Gold.

James has been mostly healthy this season, though he missed a Nov. 7 matchup against the Utah Jazz with left foot soreness and missed five games from Nov. 11 through Nov. 22 with a lingering groin injury.

Any physical setback for the 37-year-old is somewhat concerning for the Lakers, especially considering he only appeared in 56 games during the 2021-22 campaign because of various ailments. With James and Anthony Davis limited by injuries last season, L.A. finished 11th in the Western Conference with a 33-49 record and missed the playoffs.

In 17 games this season, James is averaging 25.8 points, 9.1 rebounds, 6.4 assists and 1.2 steals while shooting 46.6 percent from the floor and 33.1 percent from deep.

While the Lakers have shown signs of improvement over the last several weeks, they still sit 13th in the Western Conference with a 10-14 record. The health of James will be a significant factor in whether the team turns things around and makes a push for a playoff spot.

The Sixers, Friday's opponent, sit eighth in the Eastern Conference with a 12-12 record, as Doc Rivers' squad also hasn't lived up to expectations this year.

Atlanta Hawks superstar guard Trae Young recently purchased a $20 million mansion in Calabasas, California, located in Los Angeles County.

Front Office Sports provided a breakdown of the home and its amenities, including the presence of several celebrity neighbors:

Young bought the home from former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews, who is a Northridge, California, native and attended USC before spending 11 seasons in the NFL from 2009 to 2019 with the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams.

The 24-year-old Young was born in Lubbock, Texas, and raised in Pampa, Texas. He later attended high school in Norman, Oklahoma, and played his college basketball at the University of Oklahoma.

Young was the No. 5 overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, and he has undoubtedly lived up to that status, earning two All-Star selections during his five-year career.

The guard owns career averages of 25.4 points and 9.1 assists per game, and in 23 games this season, he is averaging 27.2 points and 9.5 assists for the 13-12 Hawks.

After a strong start to his career, Young signed a hefty contract extension last year, inking a five-year, $215.16 million deal that will keep him under contract until 2027.

The Hawks added guard Dejounte Murray in an offseason trade with the San Antonio Spurs, giving them one of the most dynamic backcourts in the NBA and a chance to be major players in the Eastern Conference for years to come.

JJ Redick Says He Previously Spoke to Joe Mazzulla About Joining Celtics Staff

JJ Redick has made a name for himself in the broadcasting world, but the former NBA sharpshooter was at least under consideration to join the coaching staff of the league's best team.

While talking to Boston Celtics guard Derrick White on The Old Man and the Three podcast (h/t Souichi Terada of MassLive.com), Redick said he spoke with Joe Mazzulla about joining his staff during the offseason.

"One thing leads to another, Sunday morning of that weekend, I'm playing golf with Joe, talking about joining your staff," Redick said. "I was just so impressed by him. I spent four-and-a-half hours with him."

The discussion occurred not long after Mazzulla was named Boston's interim head coach on Sept. 23. Mazzulla replaced Ime Udoka, who was suspended for the entire 2022-23 season by the team for a violation of club policies.

Despite the abrupt change at head coach right before the start of the regular season, the Celtics haven't skipped a beat. They lead the league in points per game (120.8), offensive rating (120.6) and net rating (plus-8.8).

The Celtics' current scoring average is on pace to be the highest in a single season since the 1983-84 Denver Nuggets (123.7).

This is Mazzulla's first stint as a head coach in the NBA. His only previous experience as a head coach was at Fairmont State from 2017-19. The 34-year-old left the Fighting Falcons to join the Celtics as an assistant coach before the 2019-20 season.

Boston is currently the only team in the league with at least 20 wins. Its 21-5 overall record is two games better than the No. 2 club (Milwaukee Bucks, 18-6).

Even though Redick declined the chance to move into coaching, it's unlikely he regrets the decision. The 38-year-old has been hosting his podcast since 2016, launched a media company in 2020 and was hired as an analyst for ESPN in 2021.

Warriors' Stephen Curry on NBA Retirement: 'Don't See Myself Slowing Down' Soon

Golden State Warriors superstar guard Stephen Curry doesn't have retirement on his mind.

When asked about his NBA future at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year Awards, Curry suggested he plans to play for a long time to come:

Curry noted that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady gave him the advice of taking things one year at a time, before adding: "I don't see myself slowing down anytime soon."

The 34-year-old Curry already boasts a Hall of Fame resume with eight All-Star selections, four NBA championships, two NBA MVP Awards, two scoring titles and one NBA Finals MVP Award.

Last season, Curry helped the Dubs bounce back from two consecutive years out of the playoffs by winning a fourth championship in eight years. Curry was also named NBA Finals MVP for the first time, plus he won the NBA All-Star Game MVP Award.

For his efforts, Curry was named Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year for 2022, making him the second individual NBA player (LeBron James, 2012, 2016, 2020) to win the award since Dwyane Wade in 2006.

All told, Curry has spent 14 years as an NBA player, appearing in 849 regular-season games.

In addition to averaging an impressive 24.4 points per game for his career, Curry is the NBA's all-time leader in three-pointers made with 3,234.

Curry is also the top free-throw shooter in NBA history at .908, plus he is 43rd on the all-time scoring list and 50th in NBA history in total assists.

The sharpshooter has not shown any signs of falling off this season, as he is averaging 30.0 points per game in 23 contests. That scoring average would be the third-highest of his career if it holds up.

Golden State has disappointed as a team with a 13-13 record, but it boasts a ton of talent and veteran experience, which suggests it will be in the championship mix by the end of the year.

Only 26 players in NBA history have won more championships than Curry, and it is safe to assume that moving up that list is a huge motivating factor for him to continue playing for years to come.

On the night he was honored as Sports Illustrated's Sportsperson of the Year, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry used his platform to pay tribute to Brittney Griner as she makes her way back to the United States.

Curry opened his speech at the ceremony with thoughts on Griner:

President Joe Biden announced on Thursday morning Griner was on her way back to the United States after Russia agreed to a prisoner swap

Griner was arrested in Russia on a drug charge in February. She was sentenced to nine years in prison in August after pleading guilty in an attempt to accelerate the process for a potential exchange of prisoners.

Athletes from all sports used their platform to speak out for Griner to keep her name at the front of people's minds and potentially help speed the process of getting her home.

After Biden's announcement that Griner was on her way back to the U.S., there was an outpouring of support for the Phoenix Mercury star from her fellow WNBA players:

A United States official told CNN that Griner is expected to land in San Antonio, Texas. She is expected to be back in the country at some point on Friday.

Warriors' Anthony Lamb Accused of Rape in Civil Lawsuit

A woman accused Golden State Warriors forward Anthony Lamb of raping her in 2019 when the pair were students at the University of Vermont in a civil lawsuit filed against the school Tuesday, per Alex Simon and Madeline Kenney of the Mercury News.

Lamb is not facing criminal charges and is not a defendant in the civil case. He called the accusations "patently false" in a statement.

"I have always been fully cooperative regarding the alleged incident, and have welcomed any investigation into the matter," Lamb said. "Simply put, I have never committed sexual assault."

The Warriors also released a statement Thursday:

"Anthony is not a defendant in this recent lawsuit and, to our knowledge, he has never been charged with any wrongdoing in any legal case. Prior to signing Anthony in September, we did our due diligence with the NBA and his prior teams, as we do with all players. If any new information comes to light, we will certainly evaluate it and act accordingly."

Kendall Ware said that during a men's basketball team party in September 2019, Lamb assaulted her, ignoring her when she repeatedly said "no" and telling her to "just take it."

The two had ended a sixth-month relationship the previous summer.

"Ware was terrified of reporting Lamb," the lawsuit stated. "In such a small state, to many, Lamb was a bonafide celebrity both on and off campus. Ware was afraid of the repercussions of reporting him to the school authorities, let alone to the police."

Ware, a swimmer for the school, said she reported Lamb to the Vermont Title IX office but that the athletic department was then inappropriately contacted by Vermont officials. She accused athletic department officials of guiding her away from a formal review of the incident and toward settling for "informal restitution" to allow Lamb to "escape any meaningful consequences for his actions."

In addition to suing the school for its handling of the situation, the lawsuit also named Vermont's board of trustees and officials in the Title IX office and athletic department as defendants.
