Jalen Hurts Leading Eagles into Territory the Cowboys, Giants, NFC East Can't Match

There were a number of impressive performances in Week 3, whether it was the Miami Dolphins outlasting the Buffalo Bills to claim first place in the AFC East or the Jacksonville Jaguars serving notice that they are no longer a tomato can by shelling the Los Angeles Chargers.

But no performance was more dominant than what happened in the nation's capital. For the second week in a row, the Philadelphia Eagles made quick work of their opponent, blasting the Washington Commanders 24-8 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was fantastic again in the win, building on his early-season MVP buzz.

That's not the only buzz in the City of Brotherly Love three weeks into the season. It's admittedly still early, but right now, the Eagles look the part of both a complete team and the clear-cut front-runners in the NFC East.

As a matter of fact, given the issues facing the division's other teams, it's fair to question whether the Commanders, Dallas Cowboys or New York Giants really have a shot of giving the Eagles a run for their money in 2022.

For the second week in a row, Hurts was excellent throwing the football—the third-year pro completed just under 63 percent of his passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns with a robust passer rating of 123.5.

It marked the second straight 300-yard game for Hurts, who is now completing 67.3 percent of his passes, averaging over 305 passing yards a game and has a passer rating of 106.5.

After torching the Vikings for 390 total yards and three combined touchdowns in Week 2, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni told reporters that he wasn't surprised by the growth that Hurts has shown this season.

"I wouldn't say I'm surprised. I've seen the growth," he said. "We talk about this so much with Jalen. Why is he going to continue to reach his ceiling? Because he's tough, he has high football character, and he loves football. He's going to reach his ceiling. It's fun watching him grow."

He's growing, all right.

For his part, Hurts was quick to thank his teammates for the success he has enjoyed this season.

"You have to draw your strength from others," he said. "I can't perform without the other 10 on the field. Same on the other side. They need me to do my job for them to eat. It's a collective group."

Hurts is spot-on. It hasn't just been him.

With the Eagles run game stymied by the Commanders, the team's pass-catchers all stepped up in a big way. Wide receiver DeVonta Smith balled out, hauling in eight passes for 169 yards and a touchdown. Fellow wideout A.J. Brown caught five passes for 85 yards and a score.

Tight end Dallas Goedert also chipped in a touchdown. And an offensive line that Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus ranked as the NFL's best once again controlled the point of attack.

It's not just the offense, either. After giving up just 240 yards of offense and eight points (two of which came from a safety) against the Commanders, the Eagles are giving up 296.7 yards per game and 16.7 points per game—numbers that both rank inside the top 10.

And after sacking Carson Wentz a whopping nine times Sunday, the Eagles rank toward the top of the league in that category. Three games in, the Eagles have a turnover differential of plus-four, which, wait for it, also ranks toward the top of the NFL.

An explosive offense. A stifling defense. These Eagles are loaded on both sides of the ball. Balanced. Dangerous. Without a glaring flaw.

The same cannot be said about the rest of the division.

First off, it was plainly demonstrated Sunday that the Commanders will not be a factor in the division. After surviving the Jaguars in Week 1, the Commanders have been shredded by the Detroit Lions and now the Eagles.

The offense has seemingly forgotten that the first half is a thing—in two straight games, Washington has been invisible offensively before halftime. The defense is giving up over 402 yards and 27 points per game.

Heading into Monday's showdown with the rival Cowboys, the Giants are 2-0 for the first time since 2016 after beating the Tennessee Titans and Carolina Panthers. But the reality is the Titans and Panthers aren't very good—and neither are the G-Men.

New York's offense ranked outside the top 20 in yards per game and averaged just 20 points a contest entering Week 3. The defense's numbers are inflated by playing two of the league's most stagnant offenses.

The Giants are a mirage. They don't have the firepower on either side of the ball to maintain their early success.

Then there's Dallas, the preseason favorites to win the division in the eyes of most pundits. The Dallas offense should improve once the team gets quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver Michael Gallup back, but offensive line issues have led to the Cowboys averaging a dismal 89 yards per game despite the presence of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard.

The Cowboys are better defensively than the Giants and Commanders, but they aren't as stout on that side of the ball as the Eagles.

That's the thing. Last year, the run-heavy Eagles had a flaw—one that was exposed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs. The recipe was simple. Load the box, take away the run game and make Hurts beat you throwing the ball.

But if Sunday's domination of the Commanders was any indication, if you do that against the 2022 Eagles, your secondary will get carved up like a rotisserie chicken.

Maybe it's the arrival of a true "alpha" receiver in Brown. Maybe it's the maturation of Hurts. Maybe it's another year of familiarity with Sirianni's offense. Maybe it's a combination of all those factors. But whatever the reason, Philly's biggest weakness in 2021 is a strength in 2022.

There are no guarantees in the NFL, and there's a long way to go. All it takes is a couple of critical injuries to derail a season. But three weeks into the season, it appears that may well be what it takes to stop the Eagles.

Because the rest of the NFC East isn't going to.

Ron Rivera Says Commanders Won't Bench Carson Wentz as QB Despite 9 Sacks vs. Eagles

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera isn't going to make a change at quarterback right now.

Speaking to reporters after Sunday's 24-8 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, Rivera definitively said "no" when asked if he is going to replace Carson Wentz after he was sacked nine times.

The Commanders traded a 2022 second-round and third-round pick along with a conditional pick in 2023 to the Indianapolis Colts to acquire Wentz. They also received a 2022 second-round and seventh-round pick in the deal.

Wentz was coming off a solid statistical season in Indianapolis, but the way the Colts finished in 2021 left a lot to be desired. He threw for 185 yards, turned the ball over twice and was sacked six times in a 26-11 Week 18 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars that ended the Colts' playoff hopes.

Things apparently got so bad on the field and behind the scenes that Colts head coach Frank Reich apologized to owner Jim Irsay for lobbying to acquire Wentz from the Eagles, per Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

While there is no indication of drama in the Commanders locker room right now, Wentz is still making the same mistakes that cost him down the stretch in 2021.

The Eagles held Wentz to 24 passing yards and registered twice as many sacks (six) as completions allowed (three) in the first half. Washington had minus-16 net passing yards through the first two quarters.

In his first three games as Washington's quarterback, Wentz has four turnovers (three interceptions, one lost fumble) and has been sacked 15 times.

The Commanders have been outscored 46-0, and the offense has managed just 87 yards in the first half of the past two games combined.

Taylor Heinicke is the No. 2 quarterback on Washington's roster. He started 15 games last season, throwing for 3,419 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. The 29-year-old is best known for racking up 352 yards of offense and accounting for two touchdowns in the Commanders' 31-23 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 NFC Wild Card Game.

Sunday's loss to the Eagles dropped Washington's record to 1-2 overall.

Jalen Hurts, Carson Wentz Deemed 'Quarterback Mismatch' as Eagles Beat Commanders

In the game billed as Carson Wentz taking on the team that drafted him for the first time, it was the Philadelphia Eagles' current quarterback who stole the show.

Jalen Hurts continued his torrid start to the season with 340 yards and three touchdowns through the air in the Eagles' 24-8 victory over the Washington Commanders.

In the past six days, Hurts has thrown for 673 yards and accounted for six scores. He likely could have had more production Sunday, but head coach Nick Sirianni took his foot off the gas pedal in the second half after going up by 24 at the intermission.

The first half Sunday was nothing short of a masterpiece for the Eagles on both sides of the ball. Hurts had 291 total yards (279 passing) and three touchdowns. DeVonta Smith was the recipient of seven catches for 156 yards and a score through two quarters.

The final sequence before halftime was a feather in Hurts' cap. He attempted a quarterback sneak from Washington's 1-yard line on 3rd-and-goal but got stopped for a loss of one yard with 18 seconds remaining.

With no timeouts remaining, Hurts and the offense quickly got in shotgun formation. The third-year quarterback got the snap off before the clock expired and found Smith in the back of the end zone for a touchdown to take a 24-0 lead.

There was talk coming into the season that the Eagles could be plotting to add one of the top quarterbacks in the 2023 class. They added to their receiving group by acquiring A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans and maintained both of their first-round picks in next year's draft.

While it's still early in 2022, the results so far suggest Hurts is their quarterback of the future.

As Hurts continues to move up the early-season MVP rankings, Wentz was not given a warm reception by his former team. He finished 25-of-43 for 211 yards, but his day was even worse than those numbers would indicate.

The Eagles defense sacked him nine times, with six coming in the first half. Wentz had minus-16 net passing yards going into halftime (24 passing yards, 40 yards lost on sacks).

Washington's offense in the first half over the past two weeks has been abysmal. The unit has been shutout by the Eagles and Detroit Lions with a total of 86 yards.

Wentz has been great at putting up numbers in the second half, though most of that has been garbage time because the Commanders were losing by three scores at the start of the third quarter against the Eagles and Lions.

There was little doubt that Philadelphia had to move on from Wentz when he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts in March 2021. Hurts' development since being a second-round draft pick in 2020 has the Eagles standing tall in the NFC after another dominant performance.

Jimmy Garoppolo Rumors: 49ers, Commanders Had Trade in Place Before QB Had Surgery

The Washington Commanders were close to acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo from the San Francisco 49ers before the quarterback's offseason surgery, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The two sides "had the parameters of a trade agreement in place" involving multiple draft picks, per Schefter.

Washington instead pivoted toward a trade for Carson Wentz, while Garoppolo remained with the 49ers on a restructured deal as the team's backup. He will now be San Francisco's starter going forward after Trey Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury.

The 49ers weren't shy about shopping Garoppolo this offseason with Lance—the 2021 No. 3 overall pick—expected to take over the starting job. General manager John Lynch also admitted the team nearly had a deal before the March surgery.

"I felt we were close in some discussions and then the decision was made to have surgery and it brought things to a screeching halt," Lynch told KNBR in May.

The 49ers were surprised by Garoppolo's decision to undergo surgery, with Lynch saying it "certainly caused a lot of teams to pause."

The recovery went according to schedule, although the quarterback did not start throwing again until late June, via Matt Barrows of The Athletic. This would have been a significant risk for any team looking to acquire a starting quarterback in March. At the very least, it would've put the player behind in developing chemistry with his new team before training camp.

Washington instead went with another experienced starter in Wentz, who currently has 650 passing yards and an NFL-best seven passing touchdowns through two games.

The Carolina Panthers were also often linked with Garoppolo but instead traded for Baker Mayfield.

If Garoppolo plays well in 2022 and shows he's past his shoulder issues, there could be a bigger market when he hits free agency after this season.

Cowboys' Micah Parsons Posts Michael Jordan 'Flu Game' GIF Due to Illness Before MNF

Dallas Cowboys star Micah Parsons is apparently expecting a big game on Monday Night Football despite being under the weather.

The reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year posted on Twitter a GIF of Michael Jordan from the "Flu Game" in the 1997 NBA Finals.

Per Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Parsons is officially listed as questionable with an illness heading into Monday's matchup with the New York Giants.

Parsons did go through a limited walkthrough on Saturday after missing practice the previous two days.

If you are a sports fan who is somehow unfamiliar with the "flu game," it came in Game 5 between the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz. Jordan was suffering from flu-like symptoms and dehydration, but he put up 38 points in a 90-88 win that gave Chicago a 3-2 series lead.

Obviously, the stakes for a Week 3 game between the Cowboys and Giants pales in comparison to an NBA Finals game with the series tied. But it's still fun to think about Monday potentially being a defining moment for Parsons in 2022.

While it's unclear what the edge-rusher equivalent of 38 points in a single game while sick would be, Parsons seems like a safe bet to hit the mark. The 23-year-old already has a strong argument as the best pass-rusher in the NFL, with seven quarterback hits and four sacks through two games.

Per ESPN's pass-rush win rate, Parsons' mark of 59 percent is 13 points higher than the No. 2 player (Von Miller).

Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas is off to a fantastic start this season, but Parsons could avoid him by lining up on the opposite side as he tries to get after Daniel Jones.

We will find out what Parsons might be able to do if he plays on Monday at 8:15 p.m. ET when the Cowboys and Giants kick off at MetLife Stadium.

Report: 'Multiple NFL Owners' Believe Dan Snyder Ouster Could Be Considered

Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder reportedly may soon face pressure from other ownership groups to sell the NFL franchise.

Mark Maske, Nicki Jhabvala and Liz Clarke of the Washington Post reported Saturday that "multiple" NFL owners, none of whom were named, "believe serious consideration" will be given to either convincing Snyder to sell or voting to remove him.

"He needs to sell," one owner told the Washington Post. "Some of us need to go to him and tell him that he needs to sell."

One owner referenced the pressure placed on Phoenix Suns governor Robert Sarver, who received a one-year suspension and $10 million fine from the NBA following an investigation into allegations of racism and misogyny.

Several high-profile players, including Suns star Chris Paul and the Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James, spoke out saying the punishment wasn't enough. Sarver proceeded to announce he's putting the Suns and WNBA's Phoenix Mercury up for sale.

"Need to have it happen like the NBA just had," an NFL owner told the Washington Post in reference to a similar voluntary sale by Snyder.

Not all owners agreed with the sentiment, however, with one telling the Post it would be "surprising" if there was a sustained movement to oust Snyder at the current time.

Commanders president Jason Wright released a statement in response to the newspaper's report.

"We are making important progress on a cultural transformation to ensure our workplace is inclusive and safe for all," Wright said. "The League has publicly recognized our efforts, and independent experts regularly examining our journey on this accord have confirmed this progress. We are relentlessly focused on continuous improvement at every level of the organization so that we can be a gold standard organization in all facets."

In July 2021, the NFL fined Washington $10 million following an investigation that determined members of the organization acted in a "highly unprofessional" manner "both generally and particularly for women."

The probe found evidence of bullying, intimidation, multiple allegations of sexual harassment and a "general lack of respect in the workplace."

Details of the investigation were never publicly released as the NFL said lead investigator Beth Wilkinson verbally presented her findings to the league rather than in a physical report.

The U.S. House of Representatives' Oversight Committee launched its own investigation into the Commanders' workplace culture last October, and Snyder testified for over 10 hours during a July hearing.

"Despite the investigation's conclusion last month—marked by proposed legislation and a summary of findings—Mr. Snyder fully addressed all questions about workplace misconduct, described the Commanders' dramatic two-year transformation and expressed hope for the organization's bright future," a team spokesperson said after the voluntary deposition.

The Commanders are also under investigation by Virginia's Office of the Attorney General for alleged financial improprieties related to hiding revenue from the NFL's revenue-sharing pool and withholding security deposits from fans.

Washington denied those allegations in an 18-page letter sent to the Federal Trade Commission in April.

Snyder purchased majority control of the Commanders in 1999. He bought out the remaining shareholders in April 2021, giving his family 100 percent control of the franchise. Forbes estimated the team's value at $5.6 billion ahead of the 2022 season.

Washington has qualified for the playoffs just six times in the 23 years of Snyder's ownership tenure, and it's never advanced beyond the Divisional Round of the postseason.

Washington Commanders chief operating officer Greg Resh is leaving the team, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington, who reported Resh wants to be closer to family.

Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post confirmed the news.

Per the team website, Resh's responsibilities include "overseeing the organization's finance, operations, IT, business intelligence and guest experience functions."

Resh released a statement about his decision, via A.J. Perez of Front Office Sports:

"Last week I informed my teammates and the Snyder family that I am moving on to a new opportunity in Baltimore, the place where I grew up and where my family lives. I'm grateful for the transformative professional opportunity provided to me."

Wright issued a statement as well, via Jhabvala:

"One of the key leaders of our cultural transformation and dramatic commercial turnaround, Greg's professional expertise, his devotion to the work, and his leadership through a significant period of change was essential and greatly appreciated. The mark of a successful tenure is knowing you achieved what you set out to do, and Greg did exactly that. Our organization owes him a debt of gratitude, and we wish him well as he begins a new chapter in his hometown, Baltimore."

Resh joined the team as its chief financial officer in November 2020, per Jhabvala. He previously worked as the CFO for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, Roc Nation and Sontiq. Resh took over for Stephen Choi, who was Washington's CFO for four years.

Resh was part of a massive front-office overhaul that occurred following a July 2020 Post report and subsequent investigation launched by the NFL into the team's workplace culture after 50 former employees alleged sexual harassment or verbal abuse by team employees.

Head coach Ron Rivera had come aboard in December 2019, but other prominent hires since then include senior vice president of media and content Julie Donaldson, team president Jason Wright, chief people officer Andre Chambers and general manager Martin Mayhew.

Cowboys' Jerry Jones Praises Dak Prescott After QB Competition Comments

(Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)

After causing a stir with comments about the team's quarterback situation, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is making it clear he values Dak Prescott very highly.

Appearing on 105.3 The Fan's The K&C Masterpiece show (h/t Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram), Jones said there isn't "anybody in the world that doesn't understand how much I appreciate Dak Prescott, his skills and to have him for the future and the future being right now, really."

Those comments come after Jones told reporters earlier in the week he wouldn't mind if there was a quarterback competition between Prescott and Cooper Rush, because it means the Cowboys were winning games with their backup.

The Cowboys are trying to stay afloat with Rush under center until Prescott is able to return from the hand injury he suffered in Week 1 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Rush did pass his first test in a starting role by leading Dallas to a 20-17 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals last week. He played well in the game, completing 19 of 31 attempts for 235 yards and one touchdown.

Prescott had surgery on his right thumb on Sept. 12. He was expected to be out for six to eight weeks, but the two-time Pro Bowler could be on a fast track to return. The 29-year-old was on the practice field Thursday and worked with a training ball, though he didn't take snaps or throw a football.

The Cowboys elected not to place Prescott on injured reserve, which would have meant he had to sit out at least four games.

Jones told 105.3 The Fan on Sept. 13 (h/t ESPN's Todd Archer) the team wanted Prescott "to be a consideration for playing for us within the next four games."

Prescott has been the Cowboys' starting quarterback since his rookie season in 2016. He has amassed a 53-33 record in 86 starts and led the team to the playoffs three times. The Mississippi State alum is in the second season of his four-year, $160 million contract.

Rush joined the Cowboys in 2017 as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan. He has spent the bulk of his career in Dallas, with the exception of a four-month stint on the New York Giants before the start of the 2020 season.

The Cowboys have gone 2-0 in Rush's two starts over the past two seasons. He will look to extend his winning streak in Week 3 against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.

Cowboys' Jerry Jones Calls Amari Cooper a 'Top Player' After Trading WR to Browns

Team owner Jerry Jones praised former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver, Amari Cooper, following his trade to the Cleveland Browns.

Jones discussed why the franchise moved on from Cooper, who's tallied 219 yards and two touchdowns in his first three games with the Browns, Friday on 105.3 The Fan radio (via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News).

"The issue with Amari Cooper was how much we were paying him and what we could do with that money, completely," Jones said. "Amari Cooper is a real good player. Top player."

He added, "you can't have it all" when it comes to building a roster within the salary cap.

Cooper's early success in Cleveland combined with Dallas' mediocre offensive performance through two games has reignited questions about why the team decided to deal the wideout in return for a fifth-round draft pick and a sixth-round pick swap.

The Cowboys have maintained it was a financially motivated move related to his five-year, $100 million contract, but the Browns restructured the deal shortly after the trade to save over $15 million in cap space for the 2022 season, leaving his cap hit at $4.9 million.

Dallas currently has $12.5 million in cap space, the third-most in the NFL, per Spotrac.

"It's not like I disliked being in Dallas," Cooper told reporters after the trade. "I actually loved being there. I wouldn't say I just wanted to leave. But you know, at the same time, it's never personal. It's just business."

The Cowboys' offense has been heavily impacted by injuries, most notably the absences of quarterback Dak Prescott and two key receivers, Michael Gallup and James Washington. The unit would nevertheless be stronger if Cooper was still on the roster.

Meanwhile, the four-time Pro Bowl selection is operating as the Browns' unquestioned No. 1 target during the team's 2-1 start. He's recorded 27 targets, 11 more than the next highest pass-catcher, tight end David Njoku.

Dallas' offense should eventually find its stride assuming all of the key contributors are eventually on the field at the same time, so the situation could eventually become a moot point.

For now, the Cowboys decision to move on from Cooper isn't aging all the well so far.

Cowboys' Mike McCarthy Responds to Jerry Jones' Prescott, Rush QB Competition Remarks

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy shut down any talk of a potential quarterback controversy Friday.

McCarthy was asked to respond to a comment made by Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Thursday. Jones said he would "walk to New York" if it meant backup Cooper Rush would play as well as starter Dak Prescott and create a quarterback controversy while Prescott is out because of an injury:

Per Jon Machota of The Athletic, McCarthy pumped the brakes during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, saying: "Clearly, everybody in our locker room and everybody in the building, Jerry included, [knows] Dak is our quarterback. We want Cooper to be [as] successful as possible. So, I think it stops right there."

Rush replaced Prescott during the Cowboys' Week 1 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when Prescott exited with a thumb injury. Rush started in Prescott's place in Week 2 and led Dallas to an upset win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Prior to getting injured, Prescott struggled mightily in the 19-3 loss to Tampa, completing 14 of his 29 passing attempts for 134 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

In just his second career start, Rush ran the offense effectively in a 20-17 win over the Bengals, going 19-of-31 for 235 yards with one touchdown and no picks. Most impressively, the 28-year-old led a game-winning field goal drive in the closing seconds with the score tied at 17.

Rush has won both of his career starts, and he is set to lead the Cowboys in New York on Monday night for a clash with the NFC East rival and 2-0 Giants.

While the undrafted Central Michigan product has played well in limited opportunities during his five seasons, there is little doubt that the Cowboys are best off when they have Prescott under center.

The 29-year-old is a two-time Pro Bowler coming off the best statistical season of his career, as he completed 68.8 percent of his passes for 4,449 yards, a single-season franchise-record 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Prescott also led the Cowboys to an NFC East title, plus Dallas was No. 1 in the NFL last season in total offense.

Perhaps the biggest reason for Dallas' lack of offensive success this season is the supporting cast around its quarterback, as it is significantly worse than last season.

The offensive line has been decimated with left tackle Tyron Smith going down with an injury and both La'el Collins and Connor Williams leaving in free agency. Also, wide receivers Amari Cooper and Cedrick Wilson are gone from last year's team, plus wideout Michael Gallup has yet to play this season because of injury and tight end Dalton Schultz got injured last week.

Dallas needs to get healthy and improve dramatically at every spot offensively in order to be contenders in the NFC East this season, and that is true whether Rush or Prescott is the quarterback.

For now, the Cowboys will have to continue to turn to Rush since Prescott is expected to miss 6-8 weeks after undergoing thumb surgery.
