Josh Allen Talks Injury, Playoff Race, 'My Cause My Cleats' and More In B/R Interview

Nov 30, 2022

Thanksgiving week can be a stressful time under even the most normal of circumstances without being forced to travel hundreds of miles to avoid a major snowstorm to perform your job twice as much as usual in a five-day span.

That is exactly what Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills faced in Weeks 11 and 12 of the season when their game against the Cleveland Browns—which took place just four days before a Thanksgiving matchup against the Lions—was moved to Detroit because of weather concerns.

"Just find a way," Allen told Bleacher Report when asked what the team's mindset was that week. "It was a roller coaster of emotions with lots of ups and downs. Getting snowed in, but then having the fans dig us out of our driveways and dig our cars out and help us out with plowing. And then having two games in five days at the same spot that isn't home.

"So it was big for us to kind of battle that and be resilient and come together and get two wins out of that. We could have easily let that be a distraction or excuse, but the leadership that we have in our locker room and how much we care about each other helped make sure that didn't happen."

That leadership helped the Bills go 2-0 during a stretch that was going to be important regardless of where the games were played.

Buffalo entered the Cleveland matchup on a two-game losing streak and emerged from the contest against the Lions on a two-game winning streak thanks in large part to a back-and-forth victory on Thanksgiving.

Detroit took the lead in the fourth quarter with a D.J. Chark touchdown, but Allen found Stefon Diggs for a score to retake the lead before Detroit tied it with a field goal with 23 seconds left. As if there was ever a doubt, though, Allen directed the offense into field-goal range in the final seconds, and Tyler Bass won it with a 45-yarder.

As if the drama of the entire week wasn't enough, Allen has been playing with an elbow injury that hasn't forced him to miss a game but did leave him questionable ahead of the Week 10 matchup with the Minnesota Vikings.

"The elbow's feeling great," he said in an update that is welcome news for Bills fans. "We're working through it, and I've been able to play the last few games. I really haven't felt it at all. Each day brings more progress as well, so I'm just trying to find a way to truck on."

That means he will take the field Thursday against Mac Jones and the New England Patriots.

While they will be playing against each other, Allen and Jones partnered with Gillette for the NFL's annual My Cause My Cleats initiative. The quarterbacks worked with visual artist Joshua Vides to create their designs with the proceeds for Jones' going to the Boys & Girls Club in Jordan, Massachusetts, and the proceeds for Allen's going to the Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo through the Patricia Allen Fund.

The Patricia Allen Fund started when Allen's grandmother died and fans started donating to the Oishei Children's Hospital in $17 increments to match his jersey number.

The cleats will be auctioned at NFL.com/auction, and Gillette will match the proceeds.

"We've got a really cool design this year," Allen said. "...My cleats are going to have the OCH blocks that you can find in front of the hospital, the Team 17 logo on the back, the Patricia Allen Fund—which is something near and dear to my heart—on the sides. There's going to be an EKG, there's a heart on each cleat. And then on the inside, we've got six signatures from kids at Oishei Children's Hospital."

As for Jones, his cleats will feature the Boys & Girls Clubs of America logo and a flower or heart on the toe of each one, which was requested by the members of the club when he visited them.

The choice was clear for Allen when deciding he would represent Oishei Children's Hospital for the My Cause My Cleats initiative.

"As a rookie I did a few visits to see some kids," he said. "And I remember as a kid, my brother was in a children's hospital for a week. I just remember as a young kid the angst that I had with the uncertainty of what was going on. And when I did these visits, I just realized how easily I could make an impact on someone and just brighten their day by showing up and being there to show them that people care."

He will be wearing those cleats in a critical Week 13 game against the Patriots where he will have the opportunity to earn a division win and improve his MVP chances.

The University of Wyoming product has completed 63.9 percent of his passes for 3,183 yards, 23 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and appears well on his way to a third straight season with more than 4,000 passing yards. He also has 561 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Allen and Diggs are arguably the top one-two combination in the league, and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had nothing but positive things to say about the quarterback ahead of the matchup.

"Allen's the leading rusher, so that tells you all you need to know about what you have to defend every time he touches the ball, it could be any number of things and does them all well," he told reporters. "Great player, certainly an MVP candidate. He does a lot for their team in a lot of ways."

While the ultimate goal is to take the next step after heartbreaking playoff losses to the Kansas City Chiefs the last two seasons and reach the Super Bowl, Allen could claim the award with a strong finish as he battles with Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa and others.

But even Belichick's suggestion that he is in the running didn't take away from his primary focus.

"It's such a great compliment coming from someone that's got such a historical resume and is one of, if not the, greatest coaches to ever grace this game," Allen said. "So it means a lot coming from him. But at the same time, all I'm trying to do is find a way to win the game. And he's going to have a good gameplan, they always do. So we have to find a way to adjust in-game and find a way to win."

Finding a way to win is all the more important in such a competitive AFC East race.

The AFC West got much of the love before the season with Mahomes, Justin Herbert, Russell Wilson and Derek Carr as the quarterbacks, but only the Chiefs are better than one game over .500.

Instead, it is the AFC East that has taken the spot as the best division in the conference with all four teams above .500 and the Bills and Miami Dolphins sitting at 8-3. Miami is yet to lose a game with a healthy Tua Tagovailoa and even defeated Buffalo in Week 3.

Fortunately for the Bills, everything is still in front of them with four of their final six games against divisional foes.

"It's going to take us playing our best ball and finding ways to be smart, score touchdowns and play complementary football," Allen said when asked what the team needs to do to emerge as division champs. "I think the most important thing is taking it one game at a time and trying to go 1-0 each week. Division games are hard, but our most important game is always the next one. And that's Thursday night."

His cleats will have quite the spotlight as the Bills look to build momentum heading into the stretch run.

2022 NFL MVP Odds: Who Can Catch Patrick Mahomes Entering Week 13?

The 2022 NFL MVP award race is starting to really heat up following an exciting Week 12 slate.

A handful of realistic contenders have established themselves as favorites with two-thirds of the campaign in the books, but there is still plenty of time for a dark horse to ascend the ranks.

With that in mind, let's look at the latest odds for the top-five MVP candidates and evaluate what each has accomplished to earn this lofty status. You can also find some outside contenders who still have a glimmer of hope at making history by earning this honor.

Patrick Mahomes, QB, Kansas City Chiefs (-160)

Patrick Mahomes already has one MVP in his trophy case and currently has the inside track to a second.

The 27-year-old has guided the Kansas City Chiefs to a 9-2 record—the best in the AFC heading into Week 13—while completing 66.1 percent of his passes for 3,585 yards and 29 touchdowns against eight interceptions.

It's arguably Mahomes' most impressive campaign yet, given the challenges the Kansas City offense had to face after trading Tyreek Hill early in the offseason.

If the Chiefs keep winning and Mahomes can continue his current pace for the remainder of the season, his team will earn the top seed in the conference, and he'll finish with a record-setting 5,540 yards in addition to a whopping 45 touchdowns.

Those numbers should lock up the MVP hardware, but he does have some close competition over the final third of the campaign.

Jalen Hurts, QB, Philadelphia Eagles (+350)

Jalen Hurts made the NFL MVP race much more interesting after a scintillating performance this past weekend. The rising Philadelphia Eagles superstar helped his team move to a league-best 10-1 after dissecting the Green Bay Packers defense during their Sunday Night Football matchup.

Hurts shined under the bright primetime lights even though he only completed 16-of-28 passing attempts for 153 yards. While two of those throws went for scores, the 24-year-old did most of his damage on the ground.

He finished with a career-high 157 rushing yards on 17 totes, sparking Philadelphia's offense to a hard-fought 40-33 victory.

The showing created plenty of buzz around Hurts' MVP chances and saw his odds improve rather significantly after he entered Week 12 at +550.

Should Hurts' squad finish with the league's best record and he has a few more heroic performances up his sleeve, the third-year quarterback could usurp Mahomes as the year's MVP.

Best Favorite Bet: Patrick Mahomes

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Miami Dolphins (+500)

The Miami Dolphins waffled constantly on whether to commit to Tua Tagovailoa over the first two seasons of his career. The organization finally went all-in on the fifth overall pick in 2020 this offseason, bringing in superstar wideout Tyreek Hill and bolstering a shoddy offensive line to assist the young signal-caller's development.

The moves have paid off as Tagovailoa has emerged as one of the league's top players at his position.

Unfortunately, missed games have hurt his chances of becoming the league's MVP this season.

Tagovailoa endured a scary head injury against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3, briefly exiting the game before reentering. He then had his head slammed into the turf in the first half of the following week, suffering a concussion that caused him to miss the remainder of the contest as well as the next two.

The 24-year-old picked up right where he left off after returning, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 1,529 yards and 11 touchdowns with zero interceptions over the last five games.

While Tagovailoa's emergence as a franchise quarterback has been a great development for Miami, it's likely he'll have to stay healthy and put together another sterling campaign in 2023 to earn his first MVP award.

Josh Allen, QB, Buffalo Bills (+1400)

Josh Allen was neck-and-neck with Mahomes as an NFL MVP favorite heading into the start of the 2022 season. While his Buffalo Bills have remained in the league's upper echelon, Allen hasn't done quite enough to sit atop the hierarchy.

The 26-year-old came close to winning an MVP in 2020 when he finished second after a breakout year, but his stats this season more closely resemble his 2021 performance: a strong year but one where he failed to even rate in the top three for voters.

Through 11 games, Allen is on track for a career-high in passing yardage (4,919) with the same number of touchdowns (36) as he had last year. The quarterback is completing a slightly higher percentage of his passes (63.9 percent vs. 63.3 percent), but his turnovers have also gone up, as his 11 interceptions put him on track for a career-high 17 this season.

Allen has continued to terrorize defenses when he's scrambling and has already amassed 561 yards and five scores on 81 carries. Should he remain on this trajectory, the quarterback would easily eclipse his previous career high of 763 rushing yards. Those elite running capabilities could help earn the signal-caller some extra MVP votes.

If the fifth-year veteran catches fire and leads Buffalo to an undefeated finish or close to it while lifting his own game to another level, he could potentially shrink the gap on the odds table. If not, Allen will likely narrowly miss out on an MVP award yet again.

Joe Burrow, QB, Cincinnati Bengals (+1400)

Joe Burrow established himself as an elite quarterback in only his second season, returning from a torn ACL that cut his rookie year short to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to the Super Bowl.

While Cincinnati struggled out of the gate this year with a 2-3 record, Burrow has had the offense firing on all cylinders since mid-October. Over the last six games, the 25-year-old has guided his side to five wins and lit up opposing defenses for 1,844 passing yards and 14 touchdowns while adding another three scores on the ground.

It's a noticeable improvement from Burrow's early performances—he threw for 1,316 yards but had only nine touchdowns against five interceptions through Week 5—but the turnaround likely came too late for the third-year star to earn an MVP award.

Best Contender Bet: Josh Allen

The Dark Horses

The NFL MVP award is generally considered an honor reserved for quarterbacks, especially in the modern era.

Forty-five of the 66 league MVPs have played the quarterback position, including each of the last nine winners and 14 of the past 15.

Despite this, there are a pair of skill-position players with a chance to break the mold in 2022.

Justin Jefferson, WR, Minnesota Vikings (+10000)

A wide receiver has never taken home the NFL MVP award, and it seems it would take a truly special campaign from one for that to change. Cooper Kupp only finished third after winning a rare Triple Crown last year, but Justin Jefferson does have an outside chance at pulling off something no player has ever done before.

The Minnesota Vikings star was on pace to become the first wideout to ever eclipse the 2,000-yard receiving mark before a disappointing 33-yard outing against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 11 hurt his chances of making history.

Jefferson rebounded on Sunday with a 139-yard showing, putting him on track for a still-impressive 1,904 yards after 17 games. That almost certainly won't give him an MVP nod, but if the 23-year-old somehow tallies up a ton of yards and snatches a few more scores over the final six games, he could improbably rise to the top of voter's lists.

Nick Chubb, RB, Cleveland Browns (+25000)

While 18 backs have earned MVP honors since the creation of the award, none have done so since Adrian Peterson in 2012. That isn't likely to change a decade later, but Nick Chubb has the best chance of any back to snap the signal-caller streak this season.

The Cleveland Browns star may not be leading the league in rushing yards or touchdowns through 12 weeks, as his 1,039 yards place him behind both Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry, and his 12 scores put him second to Jamaal Williams. However, he has helped keep his franchise in playoff contention despite playing for an offense that has been starting a backup in Jacoby Brissett.

It will take a herculean effort by Chubb down the stretch to earn MVP odds, but he does have the talent to pull off this miraculous feat.

Best Dark-Horse Bet: Justin Jefferson

Josh Allen's Brutal Turnovers Draw Scrutiny as Bills Lose Instant Classic to Vikings

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is known for his steadiness in critical situations, but his blunder late in Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings wound up costing his team a victory.

After the Bills defense came up with a huge goal-line stop with under a minute left in the fourth quarter, Allen fumbled the snap from under center and the Vikings recovered the ball in the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown.

Allen orchestrated a drive that ended with a field goal to force overtime, but he threw a game-sealing interception in the extra period and Buffalo came up short in a 33-30 loss. After losing in consecutive weeks, the Bills are now 6-3 and fell out of first place in the AFC East.

Allen finished the game with 330 passing yards and a touchdown while adding a team-high 84 rushing yards. However, he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble, and all three turnovers proved costly against a surging Minnesota team that earned its seventh straight win thanks to his mistakes.

Fans on social media who tuned in for the game couldn't help but find fault in Allen's decision-making in clutch moments:

Allen entered the year as the presumptive favorite to win NFL MVP. His performances in the Bills' back-to-back losses are far from the level we're accustomed to seeing from him. He also threw two picks in Buffalo's upset loss to the New York Jets last week.

The Bills will need Allen to get back on track if they hope to fulfill their expectations of competing for a Super Bowl this year. Buffalo will host the Cleveland Browns (3-6) next Sunday.

Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis' Fantasy Outlook with Josh Allen Rumored to Play Injured

One of the NFL's most dynamic aerial attacks won't be grounded after all.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is expected to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings despite an ulnar collateral ligament injury, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, which may have an adverse effect on Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis.

Through eight games, Diggs has 60 receptions for 857 yards and seven touchdowns. Davis (18 receptions, 451 yards, four touchdowns) is setting a noticeably better pace than he did in 2021.

With Allen on the mend, the Bills may rely more on a running back room that's gotten only moderate work so far this season. Starter Devin Singletary has only 79 rushing attempts, while rookie second-round pick James Cook has just 35 touches (28 carries, seven receptions).

It's unclear how much Allen's injury will impact his downfield throwing ability, which would impact Davis far more than Diggs, who tends to be involved in the offense all over the field.

Davis is a bigger variable, but he should still be considered a solid flex option in standard leagues. Diggs, of course, remains a plug-and-play must-start no matter who is under center for Buffalo.

Bills' Josh Allen Questionable for Week 10 vs. Vikings with Elbow Injury

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings amid his recovery from an elbow injury.

The MVP candidate missed practice Wednesday and Thursday before returning for a limited session Friday, according to the team's injury report.

Veteran backup Case Keenum will start if the franchise cornerstone is ruled out.

Allen suffered the injury during Buffalo's 20-17 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported Monday the 26-year-old was being evaluated for an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) and related nerves around his elbow. The issue occurred during the Bills' final drive of the game when he was hit by Bryce Huff.

Allen remained in the game, even throwing a pass deep down the sideline that hit Gabe Davis in the hands though he was unable to hang onto the ball.

This marks the first significant injury Allen has suffered since his rookie season in 2018, when an elbow problem kept him out for four games.

Since returning from that injury, the Wyoming product has started 69 consecutive games between the regular season and playoffs. He has been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since the 2020 season and is on the shortlist of MVP contenders in 2022.

Allen has thrown for 2,403 yards, 19 touchdowns and has completed 64.1 percent of his pass attempts in eight games. He also leads the Bills with 392 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns.

Given how much of the offense Allen is responsible for, losing him for any length of time would significantly impact what the Bills can do.

Keenum went 2-0 in two starts for the Cleveland Browns in 2021. He has appeared in two games for the Bills, completing two of seven attempts in blowout wins over the Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bills' Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, Dawson Knox Fantasy Trade Advice Before Deadline

With the fantasy trade deadline approaching, let's take a look at how you should value some of the skill-position players from the Buffalo Bills.

We'll start with Stefon Diggs, who is a top-five wideout and arguably a top-10 player in all of fantasy. To trade for him, you're going to need to be prepared to offer a massive haul. To depart with him, you better be getting back the kitchen sink.

Here's a piece of advice—don't trade him. Surely if you have a logjam at wideout you could trade one of your less productive players.

Now that we've settled that, we'll move over to Gabe Davis, who the Bills were clearly hoping would take a big leap in year three. He was solid in his first two campaigns, catching 70 passes for 1,148 yards and 13 touchdowns across 32 games.

On Buffalo's high-flying offense last year, however, players like Diggs, Dawson Knox, Cole Beasley and Emmanuel Sanders often took precedent over Davis. With Beasley and Sanders gone, the table was set for Davis to emerge as the true WR2 in this offense.

He's offered mixed results. Davis has struggled to be a worthwhile starter in weeks when he hasn't scored a touchdown, making him an all-or-nothing proposition. In trade talks, he's a player worth valuing as an inconsistent flex option, and nothing more.

That means you might be able to get him for below market value at this point. If you're the seller, don't expect to get back much.

We move to tight end Knox, who had become a favorite of Josh Allen's last season but has struggled to have a similar impact this year. Knox isn't a receptions machine and he hasn't been a huge red-zone threat this year, leaving him with very little value.

At this point, he's nothing more than a TE2 consideration, which means his trade value is extremely low. If you think a bounce-back might be on the horizon, he's a good buy-low candidate.

We'll close with Isaiah McKenzie who, like Davis, has struggled to make a major fantasy splash in weeks when he doesn't find the end zone. He's made even less of an impact than Davis, however, which should tell you all you need to know about his trade value.

So, what exactly is Justin Fields' trade value after his enormous Week 9?

Well, that's up for debate, but what isn't is that the Chicago Bears quarterback has emerged as a weekly must-start option unless you have a top-five player at the position already on your roster.

Fields now has five straight weeks with 17 or more points in standard leagues and has notched a whopping 92 points in the past three weeks.

Not that there aren't concerns.

The 23-year-old has only thrown for 200 or more yards once this season. He only has three weeks this season with multiple touchdown passes, though he has thrown for five scores in the past two weeks alone.

An enormous chunk of his fantasy value is coming from his rushing ability.

The positive side is that the Bears, finally, seem to be embracing this part of Fields' skill set, so it's very possible his rushing impact will be able to shoulder the load for his fantasy value the rest of the year.

Unfortunately, your days of buying low on him in a trade are probably over. And unless you already have another top quarterback option, there's little reason to trade him.

You are probably a week late if you were hoping to pull the trigger on a Fields deal, but it can't hurt to try.

If you are looking for a player who might be had for cheaper than his actual value, though, consider Allen Lazard.

The difference between his ranking in overall points in standard PPR leagues (27th) and his ranking in fantasy points per week played (16th) is fairly significant, especially when you consider that two of the players above him in the latter ranking are on injured reserve (Marquise Brown, Michael Thomas) and two more (Ja'Marr Chase, Mike Williams) are out several weeks with injuries.

So, on a weekly basis among healthy players, you can make the argument that Lazard is the 12th-most valuable wideout.

Considering the 26-year-old hasn't dipped below nine points in any game he's played this year, has hit the double-digit mark six times, is averaging 7.2 targets per game and is finding the end zone with solid consistency (five scores), he is very quietly an excellent WR2.

But you might be able to nab him for low-end flex prices. It's a move you should strongly consider. The Green Bay Packers may be a mess, but Aaron Rodgers trusts Lazard and he's the one wideout consistently producing for him.
