Lakers' Best Bet Is to Boost Russell Westbrook's Trade Value On the Court

The Los Angeles Lakers' Russell Westbrook era is off to a bad start. There isn't much sugarcoating available, even if you wanted it.

L.A. went 31-47 in his 78 appearances. By Basketball Reference's points added, there were only two scorers in the NBA who were less efficient (Julius Randle and Reggie Jackson). When he played without LeBron James, the Lakers were a rebuild-worthy minus-6.3 points per 100 possessions.

On the heels of a season like that, it's no wonder that Westbrook's trade value seems to be in the red. There are certainly things he can do to become a positive asset again (more on that later), but the Lakers would have to wait till the season for those to surface.

It's also not surprising that his performance is the backdrop for some offseason drama.

By the time Westbrook and LeBron found themselves in the same building during summer league, the tension that brewed as a result of Russ' poor fit was palpable.

On Monday, though, for the first time in months, we read some good news on the partnership between L.A. and Westbrook.

"The Los Angeles Lakers' Big Three of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook huddled up on a phone conversation the first weekend of NBA Summer League in Las Vegas with each expressing their commitment to one another and vowing to make it work," Chris Haynes wrote for Yahoo Sports. "While the uncertainty of Westbrook's future with the Lakers remains, the conversation was organized to make sure all three were on the same page as long as they're joined together in their pursuit of a championship."

Of course, if that conversation happened during the opening weekend of summer league, it may have preceded the icy scene in which James and Westbrook failed to acknowledge each other in attendance at the Lakers game. Still, it's more encouraging than any other nugget we've received in recent weeks and months, and that includes news that Russ and his longtime agent, Thad Foucher, were splitting up over irreconcilable differences.

A statement Foucher provided to ESPN gave more clues on where the 2017 MVP and his current team stand:

"Now, with a possibility of a fourth trade in four years, the marketplace is telling the Lakers they must add additional value with Russell in any trade scenario. And even then, such a trade may require Russell to immediately move on from the new team via buyout.

"My belief is that this type of transaction only serves to diminish Russell's value and his best option is to stay with the Lakers, embrace the starting role and support that Darvin Ham publicly offered. Russell is a first-ballot Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame player and will prove that again before he is retired."

If Westbrook is indeed "on the same page" as LeBron and AD, Foucher might be right. At least a part of why he just finished his fourth straight season on a different team is an apparent unwillingness to adapt to previous situations.

With the Oklahoma City Thunder, everything revolved around him, on and off the floor. When he was traded in 2019, it was for another contract that was seen as a burden at the time (Chris Paul's), but he still had enough value to fetch OKC multiple draft assets.

With the Houston Rockets, his inefficient scoring and desire to stay on the ball necessitated the trade of Clint Capela. And just over a year after the Thunder sent him to the Rockets, Houston traded him to Washington for John Wall (another distressed asset) and one draft pick.

With the Washington Wizards, team construction was such that Westbrook could still dominate the ball without detracting from Bradley Beal. And he was just good enough to convince the Lakers to send three rotation players (Montrezl Harrell, Kyle Kuzma and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope) in exchange for him.

Now, L.A. may be betting on a repeat of that 2020-21 success for Russ. And in turn, hoping that some other team will talk itself into the raw production.

The complicating factor now, of course, is that it isn't just Westbrook and one other scorer with the Lakers (as it was with him and Beal in Washington). Neither of the co-stars in L.A. is a lights-out shooter, either. And LeBron doesn't have the off-ball experience that Beal accumulated during his years with Wall.

Convincing James to spend more time as the secondary playmaker is probably an even steeper hill to climb than doing so with Westbrook. If the latter wants a move out of L.A. that doesn't saddle his legacy with the kind of trade Foucher is worried about, he has to change.

And he has to change more than he ever has before.

The situations are far from perfectly analogous, but Bruce Brown spent the first two seasons of his career with the Detroit Pistons as a guard before embracing a rim-running role with the Brooklyn Nets.

Westbrook can be a supercharged version of that (assuming a willingness to work on his touch in the paint). He did it to a degree with Houston, but he still started plenty of possessions as the point man. It's time to lean even harder into being a cutter, dunker's spot option and corner three-point shooter.

Believe it or not, Russ hit 43.4 percent of his threes from the corners over the last two seasons (36.8 percent over the last six seasons). When LeBron, AD (or both) are operating in the middle of the floor, he has to be willing and able to create space from the corner. If that becomes a bigger part of his offensive diet, and he maintains his numbers from the last two seasons, defenses will be forced to pay closer attention.

More importantly than any of that, though, is what Westbrook has to do on defense.

Few players of his experience and pedigree are as prone to complete mental lapses on that end. If his man doesn't have the ball and isn't directly in front of him, there's no telling what Westbrook will do (or won't do).

Any team that might be thinking about taking him on has to see a willingness to expand his game offensively and a desire to engage on the other end. And since he showed so little of either in 2021-22, L.A. might have to showcase the revamped Russ ahead of the 2023 trade deadline.

Otherwise, the Lakers will be facing the same dilemma they have for the last several months: a terrible fit that can only be sorted out by attaching picks to a Westbrook trade.

Steph Curry Talks Hypothetical Matchup of 2017 Warriors vs. 2001 Shaq and Kobe Lakers

Fresh off winning his fourth NBA championship and first NBA Finals MVP, Golden State Warriors superstar guard Stephen Curry backed his team when asked to give his take on a hypothetical series against the 2001 Los Angeles Lakers.

In an interview with Complex's Zion Olojede, Curry was asked to pick who would win a seven-game series between the 2016-17 Warriors led by himself, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green, and the 2000-01 Lakers led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal:

"Between the '96 Bulls and the hypotheticals of a seven-game series, the 2001 Lakers and that hypothetical series, or every other hypothetical series that people say we should've lost because of an injury or because of whatever the case may be, those conversations are trivial. But at the end of the day, if you could match up in some alternate universe, us versus the 2001 Lakers, obviously we feel like we can win. I don't know who would guard Shaq, but I don't know who would guard me and Klay either. We rockin' with that. And three is better than two."

Both teams are considered two of the greatest of all time, featuring multiple current or future Hall of Famers, and they both won titles.

While the 2015-16 Warriors set the NBA record for most wins in a single regular season with 73, they shockingly fell to LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals.

The Warriors then signed Durant in free agency, making the 2016-17 Dubs one of the most talented squads in NBA history.

They also dominated the league, going 67-15 during the regular season and 16-1 in the playoffs, including a 4-1 series win over the Cavs in the Finals, which concluded with Durant being named NBA Finals MVP.

As for the Lakers, the 2000-01 season marked their second of three consecutive NBA championships on the backs of the superstar duo of Kobe and Shaq.

Of that three-year stretch, 2000-01 was the Lakers' worst campaign in terms of regular-season record at 56-26, but like the 2016-17 Warriors, they lost just one playoff game en route to beating the Philadelphia 76ers in the Finals and winning a championship.

Shaq was named NBA Finals MVP, and he was virtually unstoppable in the playoffs that season, averaging 30.4 points and 15.4 rebounds, while Kobe added 29.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game.

To Curry's point, Shaq likely would have feasted on the 2016-17 Warriors since they didn't place much emphasis on protecting the paint and didn't have anyone capable of guarding him.

At the same time, that Warriors team had three of the best shooters ever in Curry, Thompson and Durant, and the Lakers could not have matched them in that regard, as Rick Fox and Derek Fisher were the only Lakers to average better than one three-pointer made per game that season at 1.4 and 1.3, respectively.

By comparison, Curry (4.1), Thompson (3.4) and Durant (1.9) all averaged more trifectas per game from the 2016-17 Warriors.

Both teams were dominant in their own ways, and it is nearly impossible to predict who would come out on top if they played since they had such different styles and played in different eras.

Regardless, they are two of the greatest teams of all time, and they deserve all of the accolades and praise they have received.

Despite a disappointing first year as teammates, the Los Angeles Lakers' Big 3 of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook are reportedly planning on sticking together for the 2022-23 season.

Per Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports, the three superstars had a phone conversation "with each expressing their commitment to one another and vowing to make it work."

Westbrook, who is set to earn $47.1 million this season, has been the subject of trade speculation in recent weeks. He's been linked to a potential deal for Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, whom the Lakers have reportedly been pursuing in an effort to reunite James with his championship-winning teammate from their run together with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Haynes reported that "the uncertainty of Westbrook’s future with the Lakers remains," but the phone call "was organized to make sure all three were on the same page as long as they’re joined together in their pursuit of a championship."

Los Angeles was expected to compete for a title last year but instead struggled with chemistry issues and injury woes that resulted in a 33-49 record and an 11th-place finish in the Western Conference. Westbrook, James and Davis appeared in only 21 games together, as the latter two missed significant time throughout the year.

The Lakers hired Darvin Ham to replace Frank Vogel as head coach. The former Milwaukee Bucks assistant said during his introductory press conference that he expects Westbrook to play a big role on the team this year.

"Russ and I had some really, really great one-on-one convos, man, and the biggest word I think came out of that, those discussions, was 'sacrifice,'" Ham said. "I’m going to expect him to be the same tenacious, high-energy player that he’s been all his entire career."

While a commitment to one another is a strong step forward, the Lakers weren't world-beaters last year with James, Westbrook and Davis on the floor together. Los Angeles has yet to prove it should be considered to be among elite teams in the West. It will take a commitment to defense and consistent effort for the Lakers to truly compete for a title this season.

Lakers Rumors: Russell Westbrook Linked to Knicks If Donovan Mitchell Trade Happens

If the New York Knicks swing a trade for Donovan Mitchell, the next move could be a deal for Russell Westbrook, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

A source told Stein the Knicks would want to "explore scenarios to trade away Julius Randle" if they can acquire Mitchell. A swap for Westbrook could help clear the remaining three years of Randle's initial four-year, $117 million contract signed last offseason after his All-Star campaign in 2020-21.

Westbrook is set to make $47.1 million in 2022-23 after opting into the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers.

As Stein noted, the Lakers will first try to use Westbrook in a trade for Kyrie Irving but could be interested in Randle as a secondary option.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported Saturday the talks between the Lakers and Brooklyn Nets have "not progressed."

Los Angeles could still be motivated to deal away Westbrook after a disappointing 2021-22 where the squad missed the playoffs with a 33-49 record. Randle could be a reasonable return in a trade, adding a double-double threat who played his first four years with the Lakers.

Though Randle struggled with consistency last year, he is averaging 22.1 points, 10.1 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game over his last two seasons with the Knicks. It could give the Lakers an added scoring boost behind James and Davis as the squad tries to get back into playoff contention.

The Knicks, meanwhile, likely wouldn't even want Westbrook in the backcourt, as Stein reported, but would instead use the deal to shed payroll.

Randle's contract alone isn't enough to match salaries, but adding Evan Fournier or Derrick Rose to the deal would do it if the Lakers were to accept this type of package.

It could clear up space for an RJ Barrett contract extension with the guard heading into the final year of his contract. New York would then be able to build around Barrett, Mitchell, Jalen Brunson and Mitchell Robinson.

The first domino would still be swinging a trade for Mitchell.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Knicks are a "motivated suitor," but they'll still need to find a package that works for the Utah Jazz.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James made his highly-anticipated return to the Drew League on Saturday for the MMV Cheaters, and while Kyrie Irving was also supposed to participate in the annual Pro-Am showcase, it's unclear if he will play after not showing up for Saturday's slate.

"We still have a couple games left today and then six tomorrow. So, (we'll see). But that sounded like it was going to be a sure bet, but I don't know what happened," Drew League commissioner Dino Smiley told Dave McMenamin of ESPN when asked about Irving.

Irving was expected to suit up in the Los Angeles-based Pro-Am amid trade rumors linking him to the Lakers. He was initially scheduled to play before James and DeMar DeRozan's game, and it's unclear why he opted not to play.

Rumors linking Irving to the Lakers have been swirling all summer.

A recent report from Dan Woike and Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times indicated that some of the Lakers' biggest stars have been pushing for the franchise to make a deal for Irving.

“The relationship between the Lakers and [Russell] Westbrook has looked severely strained this offseason. He attended the Lakers’ summer league opener in Las Vegas, but he and LeBron James, who was also there, didn’t speak — a stark contrast to their time together last summer. The awkwardness was noted throughout NBA circles, with strong beliefs that the Lakers’ biggest stars have been pushing for the team to trade for Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving.”

ESPN's Stephen A. Smith previously suggested that Irving wanted to team up with James in L.A. "as soon as he possibly can." The Athletic's Sam Amick, Alex Schiffer and Joe Vardon added that the 30-year-old was focused on joining the Purple and Gold in 2022-23 even before opting in to his Nets contract.

Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported earlier this month that the Lakers and Brooklyn Nets were engaged in trade negotiations centered around Irving and Westbrook. ESPN's Brian Windhorst added Monday on Get Up (h/t Nets Daily) that the Lakers were the only team expressing interest in the veteran point guard this summer.

However, Brian Lewis of the New York Post reported Thursday that a "source close to Irving" said he never requested a trade and wants to remain in Brooklyn despite Kevin Durant requesting a move out of the city.

That said, it wouldn't be surprising if Irving truly did want to team up with James again as the two led the Cleveland Cavaliers to an NBA title in 2016. The duo, along with Anthony Davis, would make the Purple and Gold a serious threat in the Western Conference.

If Irving eventually does suit up in the Drew League, rumors of him joining the Lakers will only continue to grow.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James made his highly-anticipated return to the Drew League on Saturday, and he did not disappoint while suiting up alongside DeMar DeRozan for the MMV Cheaters against Black Pearl Elite.

But before James even arrived, fans were lining up outside King/Drew Magnet High School in South Central Los Angeles in hopes of getting the opportunity to watch the four-time NBA champion take the court.

The MMV Cheaters went on to defeat Black Pearl Elite 104-102, and James finished with 42 points, 16 rebounds and four steals in his first Drew League action since 2011, when he participated in the annual Pro-Am showcase amid the NBA lockout.

James' performance on Saturday had NBA Twitter buzzing. So, let's take a look at some of his highlights and social media reactions.

https://twitter.com/JamesEdrick3/status/1548411314044776451

There's really not much to say about James' performance other than it's what fans were hoping for and more. Though it was against lesser competition, it looks like he hasn't lost a step, and Lakers fans should be excited about the season ahead.

It's unclear if James will suit up in the Drew League again this summer, but even if he doesn't, basketball fans were reminded Saturday that the annual Pro-AM showcase is a whole lot of fun to watch.

Lakers Trade Rumors: Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook Talks 'Have Not Progressed'

There doesn't appear to be any sense of urgency right now for the Los Angeles Lakers to make a deal for Kyrie Irving.

Per ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the Lakers and Brooklyn Nets have engaged in contract talks in recent weeks about a deal involving Irving and Russell Westbrook, but those discussions "have not progressed toward an agreement."

As the Nets continue to figure out their next steps in the wake of Kevin Durant's trade request, there doesn't appear to be a robust market for Irving if he's going to get dealt.

Before Irving opted in to his $36.5 million salary for next season, the seven-time All-Star was reportedly looking to facilitate a sign-and-trade deal to another team.

Per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Lakers were the only club with interest in executing a sign-and-trade agreement with the Nets for Irving at the time.

No agreement materialized because Wojnarowski noted the Nets had "no interest in taking back the available Lakers packages" for Irving.

Since the Lakers and Nets are both well into the luxury tax, they will need to either have matching salaries in a one-to-one trade or bring in other teams to help facilitate a deal.

Westbrook would almost certainly have to be included in any offer the Lakers make in an offer for Irving. The former NBA MVP is entering the final season of his current contract with a $47.1 million salary in 2022-23.

New Lakers head coach Darvin Ham has spoken about his plans to try to maximize Westbrook's ability in the offense. It doesn't necessarily mean he is going to remain with the club, but the possibility certainly seems to exist given how little market there seems to be for him.

Irving is a better player at this point than Westbrook, but he's always been a mercurial figure throughout his NBA career. The 30-year-old has averaged 27.1 points, 6.0 assists and 4.7 rebounds with a 40.6 three-point percentage in three seasons with the Nets.

The Lakers are likely looking to make a splash this offseason after missing the playoffs last season with a 33-49 record.

Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is expected to play in the pro-am Drew League amid ongoing trade rumors connecting him to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Adding to the intrigue is L.A. star LeBron James' reported participation in the same competition after an 11-year absence.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin provided the details on Saturday via longtime Drew League commissioner Dino Smiley.

The prestigious Drew League, which takes place in Los Angeles and has been in existence since 1973, is already in full swing. The sixth week of games will take place Saturday and Sunday, with six matchups per day.

Rumors have circulated connecting Irving to the Lakers. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported Monday (h/t Nets Daily) that the Lakers were the only team showing interest in the seven-time All-Star. Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported on July 2 that the Nets and Lakers were discussing a trade involving Irving and L.A. point guard Russell Westbrook.

Now Irving is playing offseason ball in L.A., the current home of his ex-Cleveland Cavaliers teammate.

Irving and James played on the Cavs together from 2014 to 2017, winning three Eastern Conference titles and the 2016 NBA championship. Now there's a possibility of reuniting on the Lakers, who are trying to move past a 33-49 season that ended with an 11th-place Western Conference finish.

The intrigue is only building now with both players' Drew League appearances.

NBA Rumors: Lakers Don't Want to Trade Multiple Round 1 Picks in Westbrook-Kyrie Deal

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly holding steadfast in their desire to include just one first-round pick in a potential blockbuster trade with the Brooklyn Nets featuring Russell Westbrook and Kyrie Irving.

Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported Tuesday it'll likely take at least two first-rounders—one to Brooklyn and another to a third team willing to take on the final season of Westbrook's five-year, $206.8 million contract—in order for Irving to land in L.A.

The Lakers find themselves in a complex situation that may not have a perfect solution.

They are just two years removed from winning an NBA title and the core tandem of LeBron James and Anthony Davis remains in place. That suggests the front office should be making win-now moves while the championship window is open.

Yet, James can become a free agent after the 2022-23 campaign and Davis has just two guaranteed seasons left on his contract.

If the Lakers don't make major strides back toward the league's elite next season, there's a real chance they could be staring down the start of a rebuild next summer.

In turn, trading more future draft picks could come back to haunt the front office. The New Orleans Pelicans have to option to swap first-rounders with the Lakers in 2023 and the Pelicans will also get their choice of L.A.'s 2024 or 2025 first-round selection, per Real GM.

Los Angeles would obviously receive some draft capital if Davis and James (sign-and-trade) are dealt next offseason, but every departing first-rounder before that possible tear down will slow down the rebuilding process in the future.

Given the demands surrounding a potential Westbrook-for-Irving deal, one key question is whether the Lakers believe there's any chance Russ can bounce back this season.

The 2016-17 NBA MVP endured a forgettable first season in L.A. amid an ever-changing role while James and Davis were sidelined by injuries. It's possible better team-wide health combined with a coaching change to Darvin Ham could spark a turnaround.

Ham expressed his excitement to work with Westbrook during the Lakers' NBA Summer League game on Sunday night:

If L.A.'s new coach can turn the nine-time All-Star into a more efficient contributor—it starts with taking fewer three-point shots as a career 30.5 percent shooter from beyond the arc—there's a chance the team could return to prominence without a blockbuster deal.

That's a long shot, however, which is why the Lakers find themselves in such a complicated spot as they try to rebound from a massively disappointing playoff-less season.

Lakers News: Pau Gasol's No. 16 Jersey Could Be Retired During 2022-23 NBA Season

Former Los Angeles Lakers power forward Pau Gasol is a shoo-in to have his No. 16 jersey retired by the team, and it appears it could happen soon.

The 42-year-old told Marc Mundet of RAC1 that he has already spoken with the franchise and the Buss family, and his jersey retirement ceremony could be in the works for some time during the 2022-23 season.

Gasol spent six-plus seasons of his 18-year NBA career in Los Angeles and helped lead the franchise to back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010. He was especially effective as a No. 2 option next to Kobe Bryant, as the two of them developed an instant chemistry when the Lakers acquired him from the Memphis Grizzlies midway through the 2007-08 season.

A native of Spain, Gasol began his professional career in Europe before being drafted third overall in 2001 by the Atlanta Hawks, who traded him to the Grizzlies on draft night. He made an instant impact, winning Rookie of the Year in 2002 and going on to become a six-time All-Star.

Gasol also played for the Chicago Bulls, San Antonio Spurs and Milwaukee Bucks. He signed with the Portland Trail Blazers in 2019 but never played a game for the team. He returned to Spain in 2021 and signed with FC Barcelona, the team he began his career with. Barcelona won the 2020-21 ACB championship and also reached the 2020-21 EuroLeague final.

In international play, Gasol was a longtime star for Spain and won a total of 11 medals in FIBA competitions. He helped lead the team to gold in the 2006 World Cup and silver in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

Gasol announced his retirement from professional basketball this past October. Shams Charania of The Athletic reported at the time that the Lakers had planned to honor him with a jersey retirement ceremony. Now, it appears that it's just a matter of time for Gasol's celebration.
