Conflicting Rumors on Chris Paul's Thunder Future After Russell Westbrook Trade

Jul 11, 2019

The Oklahoma City Thunder plan to retain nine-time All-Star Chris Paul after acquiring him from the Houston Rockets, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic:

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski first reported the Thunder dealt Russell Westbrook for Paul, two first-round picks and two first-round pick swaps on Thursday night. However, he noted that the Thunder "could continue to work to find a new team for the 34-year-old Paul."

Wojnarowski initially reported May 29 the Rockets were looking to reshuffle their roster this offseason and Paul was among the players they were open to moving.

The drama ramped up in June when Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill reported Paul had demanded a trade after his relationship with James Harden broke down. The two stars went almost two months during the 2018-19 season without talking to one another, according to Goodwill.

General manager Daryl Morey acted quickly to refute the report and say the sky wasn't falling in Houston.

The injuries to Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson seemingly opened up a path to the NBA Finals since the Golden State Warriors are effectively looking at a lost year in 2019-20. Durant also left to sign with the Brooklyn Nets

Perhaps the Rockets could've run it back and finally captured the title that eluded them the past two seasons.

But this trade would appear to indicate the rumors of friction between Harden and Paul may have had some level of truth. And if that's the case, then Paul is clearly the more expendable of the two. Harden led the NBA in assists (11.2) when he ran the offense in 2016-17, so the Rockets can trade one of the NBA's best point guards and still have a dynamic playmaker on the floor.

Furthermore, Harden gets to reunite with Westbrook, his teammate on the Thunder from 2009-2012.

Paul is set to earn $124 million over the next three years assuming he opts into the final year of his contract. That deal is burdensome on its own and gets worse considering the player turned 34 in May.

Because of those two factors, many questioned whether the Rockets could find a trade partner who'd be willing to acquire Paul.

https://twitter.com/LandryLocker/status/1133817967664357377

Thunder fans will rightfully wonder whether he's worth the cost of his contract.

Paul missed 24 games in 2018-19, the third straight year in which he was out for 20-plus games. He also shot a career-low 41.9 percent from the field while connecting on 35.8 percent of his three-pointers, down from 38.0 percent and 41.1 percent in the previous two seasons.

His 8.1 net rating was his lowest since 2011-12, per NBA.com, though he was fourth among point guards in ESPN.com's real plus-minus (4.76).

In general, Paul is on the wrong side of the aging curve. His performance will almost certainly continue to decline in 2019-20, and the concerns about his durability aren't going anywhere.

In a vacuum, he makes almost any team better. But his contract has to enter into the equation, much in the same way Westbrook and John Wall's supermax extensions impact their overall value going forward.

By the time $44.2 million player option rolls around in 2021-22, OKC may come to regret signing off on this trade. As it stands, the Thunder are an even more puzzling destination because this represents a lateral move for the team.

Even if one argues Paul is better than Westbrook, the gap is negligible. Paul is also four years older and hasn't built up a wealth of goodwill with the fanbase.

Perhaps general manager Sam Presti intends to turn around and trade Paul at a later date, but he'll encounter the same issues that limited the options available to the Rockets.

When he dealt Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, Presti did a great job by getting back a young guard (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) and five first-round draft picks. Those assets together will help the Thunder move on to a new era.

Acquiring Paul is the exact opposite of that. He doesn't turn Oklahoma City into a title contender and his contract will hinder what the team can do in the future.

Thunder's Updated NBA Draft Pick Haul Post-Russell Westbrook, Paul George Trades

The rebuilding plan is in full effect with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Thunder's goals for 2019-20 changed drastically when they traded Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, receiving Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari and five first-round picks and a pair of pick swaps in return for the six-time All-Star.

That move put Russell Westbrook's future with the team in doubt, and the Thunder wasted little time moving on from him, too.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Oklahoma City sent Russell Westbrook to the Houston Rockets for Chris Paul, first-rounders in 2024 and 2026 and pick swaps in 2021 and 2025. Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported on the protections tied to the draft picks:

The Thunder also flipped Jerami Grant for a 2020 first-rounder in a trade with the Denver Nuggets.

Through these moves, general manager Sam Presti has laid the groundwork for a new era of Thunder basketball:

The Thunder have been a playoff contender for a decade, so tearing it down to the studs will be a tough thing to watch for fans. It could be years before Oklahoma City is back to respectability.

Trading Westbrook in particular is a blow because his departure definitively ends a run that showed so much promise with a run to the NBA Finals in 2012.

But Presti deserves credit for recognizing what needed to be done and capitalizing on the collective desperation of the Clippers and Rockets.

Los Angeles needed to finalize a George trade to sign Kahwi Leonard, while Houston might have felt the need to beat the Miami Heat to the punch for Westbrook. Wojnarowski reported Tuesday the Heat had "expressed interest" in him.

Presti has already shown he's capable of successfully overseeing a complete turnaround for the franchise. He took over as the Seattle Supersonics' GM in the summer of 2007 and proceeded to move his best trade assets on and build through the draft.

The odds of Presti once again striking it rich with three stars as good as Westbrook, Kevin Durant and James Harden are slim. But the Thunder have so many draft picks that they only need one or two of those to hit to kick-start the process toward contention.

The Oklahoma City Thunder appear to be in full rebuilding mode after dealing All-Star forward Paul Georgewho requested a tradeto the Los Angeles Clippers

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Monday that Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook "is welcoming" the idea of a trade elsewhere, and Marc J. Spears of the Undefeated added more context when he mentioned on The Jump on Tuesday that the eight-time All-Star was looking to head out before the George deal.

"I heard that [Westbrook] wanted out and that PG just beat him to the punch and neither one of them knew that the other one was thinking that way," Spears said (2:10 mark).

Westbrook has played his entire 11-year career in Oklahoma City, winning the NBA MVP award in 2016-17. The former UCLA Bruin has averaged a triple-double in each of his past three seasons.

Naturally, the market for Westbrook is vibrant, with Sam Amick and Brett Dawson of The Athletic reporting that the Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets and Miami Heat are in the mix.

As Frank Urbina of HoopsHype wrote, speculation has also connected the Minnesota Timberwolves and New York Knicks to Westbrook, although Ian Begley of SNY reported that New York cannot complete a deal for the point guard until Dec. 15.

Regardless, Westbrook's Thunder tenure appears to be nearing its end. The team is already down two starters in George and power forward Jerami Grant, who was dealt to the Denver Nuggets. Making the playoffs will be a difficult task alone, and winning a championship is far bleaker.

At this point, a full rebuild featuring Westbrook, Steven Adams and perhaps others seems inevitable. If that's the case, then Westbrook will close out a sensational career in Oklahoma City.

OKC reached the NBA Finals once with him running the point, losing to the Miami Heat in 2012, and the team has made the playoffs in nine of its 10 previous seasons, with three Western Conference Finals berths. Westbrook and Kevin Durant only played a combined 94 games due to injury in the one season sans playoffs, and the team still finished 45-37.

Westbrook has also averaged 23.0 points, 8.4 assists and 7.0 rebounds in 11 years, making eight All-NBA teams and leading the league in scoring and assists twice.

Russell Westbrook Trade Rumors: Thunder 'Receptive' Toward Calls on Star PG

Jul 8, 2019

The Oklahoma City Thunder are in full rebuilding mode, and that means even Russell Westbrook could be available.

Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic reported Monday that "Oklahoma City for the first time is receptive toward trade calls on franchise star Russell Westbrook."

Per Charania, any trade talks will be a collaborative process between the player, his agent and the team. However, Charania noted that a deal could be challenging after the recent free-agent deals across the league.

The Thunder shockingly traded Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, helping the latter lure Kawhi Leonard in free agency. Although this significantly weakened Oklahoma City for next season, the organization was at least able to kickstart a rebuild with five first-round picks, four of them unprotected.

The squad continued its fire sale Monday by dealing Jerami Grant to the Denver Nuggets, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

After three straight first-round losses, it's difficult to expect much more success in the upcoming season even with Westbrook on the roster.

Trading the point guard could give a chance to start fresh while also clearing the rest of his five-year, $206.8 million extension—which began last season—off the books. Including a player option, the 30-year-old is signed through 2022-23.

This could make him difficult to trade, but some teams could be interested in adding an eight-time All-Star who won the MVP award in 2016-17 and has averaged a triple-double in each of the last three seasons.

Tim MacMahon of ESPN reported the Houston Rockets are one team that would have interest in a potential deal for Westbrook.

The Oklahoma City Thunder traded forward Jerami Grant to the Denver Nuggets on Monday for a 2020 first-round pick, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The move comes on the heels of OKC trading six-time All-Star Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers over the weekend for a package including five first-round picks.

According to Wojnarowski, dealing Grant will save the Thunder $39 million in salary and luxury tax. ESPN's Bobby Marks noted the franchise has trimmed its luxury-tax bill from $71 million to $13 million since the start of free agency.

Grant spent just over two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers after being drafted in the second round in 2014. The 76ers traded him to the Thunder in November 2016, and he is coming off his finest performance to date in an expanded role in Oklahoma City.

In 80 games (77 starts), the 25-year-old established career highs in scoring (13.6 PPG), rebounding (5.2 RPG) and three-point shooting (39.2) percent. He also recorded a defensive rating of 105.6, among the best of his career.

Although the Thunder have lost two starters from last season's playoff squad, they did receive veteran Danilo Gallinari (who shot 43.3 percent from three-point range in 2018-19) in the George trade, making Grant and his $9.3 million salary expendable.

Meanwhile, Denver is adding to a roster that finished second in the Western Conference at 54-28. The 6'9" Grant will give the Nuggets additional length on the wing.

All the marquee names in NBA free agency have agreed to sign now that the Kawhi Leonard saga is over, but with the conclusion of Leonard teaming up with Paul George and agreeing to join the Los Angeles Clippers comes a new name to watch this offseason: Russell Westbrook

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook and his agent have had conversations with Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti about the next steps—which include a possible trade—for the 30-year-old in the wake of trading George to the Clippers.

Since that report, the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets have been linked as potential trade destinations for the eight-time NBA All-Star and 2016-17 league MVP.

Houston Rockets

On Sunday, ESPN's Tim McMahon reported the Rockets are interested in Westbrook, which would reunite him with former Thunder teammate James Harden.

However, one source said that while the Rockets are interested, a trade for Westbrook would be a "long shot" because of the challenges of finding pieces who fit with the Thunder or getting another club involved for a multi-team deal.

The Rockets are certainly in the market to add another star to their roster after failing to land a meeting with free agent Jimmy Butler before he signed with the Heat, and Houston GM Daryl Morey has expressed interest in being aggressive in the trade market after Houston.

One path the Rockets could take to get Westbrook would be to swap Chris Paul for him because Paul's salary of $38.5 million aligns with Westbrook's. Morey, however, said earlier this offseason Paul and Harden would not be traded, and a source told McMahon that Paul would not necessarily be involved in a potential trade. Clint Capella and Eric Gordon are more likely pieces to be moved.

While the Rockets figure out if they can somehow land Westbrook, they are also believed to have interest in signing Tyson Chandler as a backup center, per McMahon.

Miami Heat

The Heat would certainly be an attractive destination for Westbrook after agreeing to acquire Butler via a sign-and-trade with the Rockets earlier this summer.

On Saturday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the Heat hold Westbrook in high regard, while ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski said during a broadcast of an NBA Summer League game that the Miami Heat were a "team to watch" as trade talk ramps up for Westbrook:

https://twitter.com/TheNBACentral/status/1147647049388765185

The Heat would not have to give up much to get Westbrook, either. The Thunder acquired five future first-round picks from the Clippers so, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic, they could conceivably land Westbrook for the expiring $19.2 million contract of Goran Dragic and Dion Waiters, who is owed $24.7 million over the next two years.

Detroit Pistons

Amick reported on Saturday the Detroit Pistons, along with the Heat, are "very real possibilities" for Westbrook.

Detroit already has one star in Blake Griffin, but adding Westbrook would make a formidable duo. Markief Morris, whom the Pistons signed in free agency and played with Westbrook last season, already seems to be making a pitch:

According to Amick, the most likely candidates the Pistons could trade to land Westbrook would be Andre Drummond (who is owed $55.8 million over the next two seasons with third-year player option), Reggie Jackson (on an expiring, $18 million contract), or Tony Snell (owed $23.5 million over next two years, with third-year player option).

Clearing Jackson and Snell would appear to make a lot of sense because it would allow the Pistons to keep their solid frontcourt of Griffin and Drummond while Westbrook mans the backcourt.

Paul George said goodbye to the Oklahoma City Thunder and former teammate Russell Westbrook on Saturday.

The six-time All-Star posted a farewell message on Instagram:

The Thunder agreed to send George to the Los Angeles Clippers for a package that includes five first-round draft picks, two draft-pick swaps, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Danilo Gallinari, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Wojnarowski added that trade helped facilitate Kawhi Leonard agreeing to a four-year, $141 million deal with the Clippers.

George has spent the past two seasons in Oklahoma City after being acquired in a trade from the Indiana Pacers. The 29-year-old helped the team make the postseason in both seasons, though the Tunder lost in the first round each time.

Last season was the best of George's career. He finished third in NBA MVP voting after averaging a career-high 28.0 points and 8.2 rebounds and tied his career high with 4.1 assists per game.

Russell Westbrook Rumors: Star Was Interested in Kawhi Leonard, Raptors Trade

If Russell Westbrook had been part of a deal that ended with him playing alongside Kawhi Leonard, the former NBA MVP wouldn't have objected to such a scenario.

Per Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star, Westbrook "was believed to have interest" in playing with Leonard and the Toronto Raptors

Arthur noted Westbrook was never discussed in talks between the Raptors and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder ended up agreeing on a trade that sent Paul George to the Los Angeles Clippers, serving as the impetus for Leonard agreeing to sign with the Clippers, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski

Wojnarowski noted Thunder general manager Sam Presti was willing to explore a trade package that sent Westbrook and George to Toronto, but those talks never "gained traction" because the Raptors "could never be sure that the Thunder even wanted to do a deal with them."

Even though Westbrook wasn't traded as part of a package with George, the eight-time All-Star isn't guaranteed to remain with the Thunder.

Per Wojnarowski, Presti, Westbrook and Westbrook's agent, Thad Foucher, are discussing possible next steps for the Thunder star, including a possible trade prior to the start of the 2019-20 season.

The Thunder appear set to rebuild after acquiring five first-round draft picks (four unprotected), two pick swaps, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Danilo Gallinari's expiring contract from the Clippers for George.

Westbrook has three more guaranteed years on his contract worth $124.1 million, plus a $47.1 million player option for 2022-23. The 30-year-old has averaged a triple-double in each of the past three seasons, including 22.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game in 2018-19.

Paul George Defends Russell Westbrook on Twitter After Trade to Clippers

Following his reported trade to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, Paul George stood up for former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate Russell Westbrook.

After ESPN analyst Jalen Rose tweeted, "I am not accepting any Westbrook slander," George retweeted and seconded Rose's comment:

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Clippers agreed to trade five first-round picks, guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and forward Danilo Gallinari to the Thunder for George. L.A. then reportedly agreed to a four-year, $141 million contract with Kawhi Leonard.

After the blockbuster moves were first reported, Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported that teams around the NBA were "aware of the discontent" George and Westbrook harbored.

The Thunder acquired George from the Indiana Pacers prior to the 2017-18 season, and rather than testing the market last offseason as expected, George signed a four-year, $136.9 million extension with OKC.

George finished third in the NBA MVP voting last season after averaging 28.0 points, 8.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game. The combination of George and Westbrook failed to get the Thunder out of the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season, however.

If George's desire to be traded had nothing to do with Westbrook, perhaps he wanted to play close to his hometown of Palmdale, California, and join forces with Leonard for a chance to win a championship.

Westbrook has now lost Kevin Durant and George as his running mates in recent years, and he will be left to lead a roster that includes Gilgeous-Alexander, Gallinari, Dennis Schroder and Steven Adams next season.

Shams: 'Discontent' Between Paul George, Russell Westbrook Before Clippers Trade

NBA executives were reportedly aware of "discontent" between Oklahoma City Thunder teammates Russell Westbrook and Paul George ahead of the proposed blockbuster trade Saturday sending George to the Los Angeles Clippers to join free-agent signing Kawhi Leonard.

Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic reported the update and noted the Clippers turned to OKC after Leonard requested a superstar teammate in order to sign in L.A.

George, likely sensing his exit from the Thunder would be quickly viewed as an indictment of Westbrook, took to Twitter amid the chaos overnight:

The always opinionated Skip Bayless of Fox Sports didn't waste any time in going after Russ, though:

Westbrook is an incredible individual talent who posts ridiculous stat lines pretty much every game. Yet, it's fair to debate whether his play style and poor shooting efficiency will prevent his teams from winning a championship.

The 30-year-old UCLA product has compiled season-long triple-double numbers each of the past three years. But he's a career 43.4 percent shooter and attempted 5.6 threes per game last season despite shooting 29 percent from beyond the arc, the NBA's worst mark among qualified players.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vj0iRUXqKA0

In February, George said his perception of Westbrook changed after playing alongside him (some language NSFW):

Now the question is whether the Thunder could go all-in on their rebuilding efforts by trading the dynamic point guard, too.

Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype reported a "number of NBA executives believe it's a possibility" with OKC no longer in the league's group of contenders following George's exit.

If so, it'll be intriguing to see whether any of the NBA's select class of top teams make a serious push for Westbrook with the belief he can be a key asset for a squad in title contention.
