Report: Tom Brady Retiring After Historic 22-Season Career with Patriots, Buccaneers

Future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, who won seven Super Bowl titles across 22 years with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is reportedly set to announce his retirement from the NFL.

ESPN's Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington reported the news of Brady's decision Saturday, which comes after the Bucs' title defense ended with a loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC Divisional Round.

Schefter and Darlington reported Brady's decision is "based on several factors," including family, health and expected roster turnover in Tampa Bay.

Brady's agent, Don Yee, released a statement on the report, noting Brady would make an announcement on his future "soon":

Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians told The MMQB's Albert Breer that the team hadn't been informed of Brady's decision yet:

The 15-time Pro Bowl selection's decision to hang up his cleats for the final time would come as a surprise given his continued high-level play since joining the Bucs in 2020, though he did say his family would play a key role in his decision when he didn't take a firm stance on his future after the playoff loss.

Brady guided Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl title in his first year with the franchise and then put himself in the MVP discussion during a 2021 campaign in which he led the NFL in both passing yards (5,316) and passing touchdowns (43).

The 44-year-old University of Michigan product remained highly durable—he hadn't missed a game because of injury since 2008—and his 43 TD throws were his most since 2007 with the Pats.

So his decision to walk away seemingly flies contrary to his comments to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times in mid-January, when he said his plan was to play as long as he performed at an elite level.

"I feel like I want to play as a championship-level player," Brady said. "That's what I've said for a long time. When I'm not able to do that—I said a long time ago when I suck I'll retire—but what I really meant was when I'm not capable of leading the team to victory, then someone else has to do the job."

Nevertheless, Brady built a resume that guarantees him a spot in Canton the moment his five-year waiting period is over, and he's got a strong argument as the most accomplished player in NFL history.

He's a five-time Super Bowl MVP, three-time regular-season MVP and a two-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year, combined with numerous other team and individual accolades since being selected in the sixth round of the 2000 draft.

Along with his place in the Hall of Fame, there's a good chance both the Pats and Bucs will retire his No. 12 jersey in the coming years.

Meanwhile, his departure leaves a massive void at quarterback for Tampa Bay and could end the team's recent run as a perennial championship contender.

The Bucs did select Kyle Trask in the second round of the 2021 draft, but it's impossible to know how he'll perform after a year on the sidelines. The front office could also pursue another veteran to lead a roster that's otherwise built to win now.

Those answers will come in the weeks ahead, but for now it seems there will be league-wide celebration of Brady's storied career.

Raiders Rumors: Josh McDaniels, Dave Ziegler Expected to Be Hired by Las Vegas

The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to bring aboard New England Patriots director of player personnel Dave Ziegler and Pats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their next general manager and head coach, respectively.

Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network broke the news: "McDaniels is having dinner with the Raiders' leadership team on Friday night, according to sources. He is expected to be hired along with Ziegler within the next few days."

The 45-year-old McDaniels has spent 18 of the last 21 seasons with the Patriots. He took the Denver Broncos' head coaching job following the 2008 campaign, but he was fired in his second season following a 3-9 start.

He worked as the then-St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator in 2011 before returning to New England, where he's won six Super Bowl rings.

The 44-year-old Ziegler worked for the Broncos' scouting department for three seasons before joining the Pats in 2013. He's worked in a variety of roles for the Pats, including as assistant director of pro scouting, director of pro personnel and assistant director of player personnel.

McDaniels agreed to become the Indianapolis Colts' head coach during the 2018 offseason, but he notoriously backed out at the last minute.

It appears a job with the Raiders is more palatable for McDaniels, whose offense finished sixth in scoring in 2021.

Last offseason, New England overhauled its offensive personnel and handed the keys to rookie quarterback Mac Jones. Despite all of the changes, the offense jelled, and the team scored 462 points en route to an AFC Wild Card berth.

That performance made McDaniels a name to watch in this year's coaching cycle yet again, though he reportedly didn't want to waste his time in the interview process:

McDaniels informed the Raiders that he wouldn’t accept their interview request unless he was being offered the job, per sources. And the Raiders told McDaniels that if and when he was offered the position, he needed to be prepared to accept. Sources emphasized that all parties are on the same page, including McDaniels, Ziegler, Raiders owner Mark Davis, and team president Dan Ventrelle.

Should McDaniels officially get the job, he will replace interim head coach Rich Bisaccia, who led the team to an AFC Wild Card appearance after guiding the Silver and Black to a 7-5 mark down the stretch.

Bisaccia took over for Jon Gruden, who resigned in October after emails surfaced in which he used racist, anti-gay and misogynistic language.

After the Raiders lost 26-19 to the Cincinnati Bengals in the playoffs, the organization parted ways with general manager Mike Mayo

It appears McDaniels and Ziegler will now head West, meaning that rumors connecting University of Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh to the Raiders job will not come to fruition.

Las Vegas is coming off a 10-7 season and its first playoff appearance since 2016. The Silver and Black are looking for their first playoff victory since 2002, when they won the AFC.

Raiders Rumors: LV 'Preparing to Make a Run' at Patriots' Josh McDaniels for HC Job

The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly "preparing to make a run" at New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to fill their head coaching vacancy.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Saturday the Pats are "surprised" McDaniels hasn't drawn more interest with eight openings around the NFL, though the belief he would want "full control over the football operation" could be a factor working against him.

McDaniels is in his second stint leading the New England offense. He previously filled the role from 2005 through 2008 before leaving in 2009 to become a head coach for the first time with the Denver Broncos.

His tenure in Denver flamed out quickly. The team posted an 8-8 record during his first season in charge and he was fired midway through the 2010 campaign following a 3-9 start.

After a brief one-year stint as the St. Louis Rams' offensive coordinator in 2011, he rejoined the Patriots' staff in 2012 and has spent the past 10 years guiding the team's offense.

In 2018, the Indianapolis Colts announced they'd agreed to terms with McDaniels to become their new head coach, but he backed out of the agreement a short time later to remain in New England.

That about-face may also be a factor in why some teams "remain skittish" about whether to involve the 45-year-old Ohio native in their head coaching search, per Florio.

The Raiders have opted for a full-scale coaching search despite interim head coach Rich Bisaccia leading the team to the playoffs after the midseason firing of Jon Gruden.

Bisaccia guided Las Vegas to a 7-5 record after taking over, but Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported he faces an "uphill battle" to retain the role after the team was eliminated from the postseason by the Cincinnati Bengals last weekend.

If hired, McDaniels would inherit a Raiders offense that ranked 11th in yards per game (363.8) and 18th in scoring (22.0 points per game) during the 2021 season.

His first major decision, especially if he's given full control of the roster, would be how to proceed with quarterback Derek Carr, who's set to enter the final year of his contract in 2022.

The Raiders haven't provided a timetable to wrap up their coaching search.

Bill Belichick on Patriots' Playoff Loss to Bills: 'They Played Well. We Didn't.'

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick congratulated the Buffalo Bills on their 47-17 win in the AFC Wild Card Round on Saturday at Highmark Stadium while speaking to reporters after the game.

"Congratulations to Buffalo on the win tonight," Belichick said. "Obviously they did a great job, and we just couldn't keep up with them tonight. They certainly deserved to win."

The Bills outplayed the Patriots in every area. Quarterback Josh Allen completed 21 of 25 passes for 308 yards and five touchdowns, while the defense forced Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones into two interceptions and limited him to just 232 yards and two touchdowns.

With New England's season now over, Belichick will begin preparing for the 2022 season. We know Jones will be under center again next year, but the Patriots could use a true No. 1 wide receiver for him to throw to, in addition to defensive reinforcements.

The Buffalo Bills defeated their archrival New England Patriots 47-17 in the AFC Wild Card Round on Saturday at Highmark Stadium to reach the divisional round for the second straight season.

It was the third meeting between the two teams over the last seven weeks. While the Patriots took the first meeting 14-10 on Dec. 6 in Buffalo, the Bills have now defeated New England in two straight and have won four of their last five against Bill Belichick's squad.

Star quarterback Josh Allen and tight end Dawson Knox paired perfectly to attack a depleted New England secondary, which was without Jalen Mills because of COVID-19 protocols. In addition, it was one of Buffalo's most balanced performances of the season, with the defense, running game and special teams all coming up big.

Notable Stats

Josh Allen, QB, BUF: 21/25 for 308 YDS, 5 TD and 6 CAR for 66 YDS

Mac Jones, QB, NE: 24/38 for 232 YDS, 2 TD, 2 INT and 2 CAR for 18 YDS

Devin Singletary, RB, BUF: 16 CAR for 81 YDS, 2 TD and 3 REC for 13 YDS

Kendrick Bourne, WR, NE: 7 REC for 77 YDS, 2 TD and 1 CAR for 14 YDS

Stefon Diggs, WR, BUF: 3 REC for 60 YDS

Damien Harris, RB, NE: 9 CAR for 30 YDS

Dawson Knox, TE, BUF: 5 REC for 89 YDS, 2 TD

Bills Show Super Bowl Ceiling

The Bills reached the highest of highs and lowest of lows during the 2021 regular season. They obliterated the Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins early in the season, but they also suffered an embarrassing 9-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, got blown out by the Indianapolis Colts and lost in a heartbreaker to the Tennessee Titans.

On Saturday, Buffalo proved what many believed to be true entering the 2021 season: They are legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

The Bills asserted their dominance early and entered halftime up 27-3 on the Patriots thanks to four consecutive touchdown drives. It was the first time New England had allowed touchdowns on four straight drives in the Bill Belichick era.

https://twitter.com/BuffaloBills/status/1482535671998947329

The Bills' defense also got the job done in the first half, limiting rookie quarterback Mac Jones to just 106 passing yards. In addition, Micah Hyde picked off the Alabama product in what was one of the most impressive interceptions of the year.

The Bills kept up the pace in the second half, too. Allen led three more touchdown drives, and the defense forced another turnover. Their performance could arguably be one of the best of Wild Card Weekend.

Based on how inconsistent the Bills have been this year, many took the time to acknowledge that if the team can just stay persistent, they'll have a great chance to come out of the AFC and play in the Super Bowl for the first time since 1993.

It should also be mentioned that Saturday's game was one of Buffalo's most balanced of the season. From the passing game, to the running game, defense and special teams, everything clicked for the Bills. It's something head coach Sean McDermott had been looking for all season long.

Patriots Have Bright Future Ahead With Mac Jones

Jones didn't have the best game on Saturday night, but things could have gone a lot worse for the rookie in his first career playoff game. Facing Josh Allen and the Bills in freezing temperatures was a tough task, and while Patriots fans are undoubtedly disappointed, they should be very excited for the future.

Sure, the Alabama product tossed two interceptions at Highmark Stadium. However, one was an unbelievable pick by Micah Hyde, and the other was tipped.

Jones' arm looked pretty good as he completed 24 of 38 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns. He also showed the ability to get out of the pocket and make plays on the ground when necessary, rushing for 18 yards on two carries.

We haven't seen Jones run much this season. It's not something he's particularly good at, but the fact he recognized moments where he could run for a first down and move the chains is a great sign that he's adjusting and developing.

As the game went on, and the Patriots offense seemingly woke up a little bit, many took the time to remind everyone that Jones has been very good this year, and things can only improve for New England moving forward.

Looking back on the regular season, Jones had one of the most impressive rookie seasons by a quarterback in recent memory. He completed 67.6 percent of his passes for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns against 13 interceptions.

Obviously the 2021 season didn't end how he would've hoped, but Jones is expected to improve next season and once again lead New England back to the playoffs. If Belichick can bring in some reinforcements on both offense, like a No. 1 receiver, and defense, the Patriots will be a difficult team to play against in 2022.

What's Next?

The Bills will move on to the divisional round, while the Patriots will go back to the drawing board and begin preparations for the 2022 season.

Buffalo's opponent has yet to be decided. The No. 1 seeded Tennessee Titans will face the lowest remaining seed in the AFC next weekend after this week’s games.

Amid the Buffalo Bills dominating the New England Patriots on Saturday night in their playoff matchup, one member of Bills Mafia decided to contribute to the evening by throwing a dildo onto the field.

Never a dull moment in NFL stadiums.

Of course, the main storyline from the game was Buffalo's offense scoring at will. On a brutally cold night in Buffalo, Josh Allen and his group of weapons brought the heat.

The Bills weren't messing around. They looked the part of legitimate Super Bowl contenders Saturday.

New England Patriots left tackle Isaiah Wynn has been ruled out for Saturday's AFC Wild Card Game against the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium because of ankle and hip injuries, the team announced Friday.

Wynn had not practiced all week after exiting the team's regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday after just nine plays.

Wynn started 15 games this season and played 82 percent of the team's offensive snaps, mainly serving as rookie quarterback Mac Jones' blindside protector.

The 26-year-old was limited during the 2019 and 2020 seasons because of injury, and this campaign has marked his most durable year in the NFL since being selected 23rd overall in 2018.

It's unclear how the Patriots plan to replace Wynn. However, they have several options in Justin Herron, Trent Brown and Mike Onwenu. Herron started four games this season while Onwenu started eight games and appeared in all 16.

In addition to Wynn, the Patriots had 13 players listed as questionable for Saturday's game, including safety Kyle Dugger, rookie defensive tackle Christian Barmore and linebacker Lawrence Guy, among others.

The Patriots and Bills split the season series, with New England defeating Buffalo 14-10 on Dec. 6, a game in which Jones attempted just three passes due to the weather conditions at Highmark Stadium. Buffalo took the second meeting on Dec. 26 33-21 at Gillette Stadium.

The Bills enter Saturday's game as the betting favorite, per DraftKings. Buffalo and New England have only met in the playoffs once before, a 26-8 win for the Patriots in December 1963.

Texans Rumors: Brian Flores, Jerod Mayo Top Candidates to Replace David Culley as HC

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores and New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo are reportedly among the top candidates to replace David Culley as head coach of the Houston Texans, per Texans insider Aaron Wilson and ESPN's Adam Schefter

The Texans fired Culley on Thursday after just one season. Houston finished third in the AFC South with a 4-13 record.

The Texans' interest in Flores should come as no surprise. The 40-year-old has connections with executive Jack Easterby and general manager Nick Caserio from their time with the New England Patriots.

Flores rose through the coaching ranks in New England from 2008-18 and ultimately became the franchise's defensive coordinator before becoming Miami's head coach in 2019.

The Dolphins fired Flores on Monday after three seasons. It was a surprising move out of Miami after he had led the team to two straight winning seasons for the first time since the 2002 and 2003 seasons.

Flores compiled a 24-25 record in his tenure with the Dolphins, and it appeared he had a great relationship with the organization. However, several reports since his firing have made it seem otherwise.

According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, Flores reportedly wanted authority over general manager Chris Grier before his firing. He also reportedly wanted the final say on "virtually everything" and "more people to report to him."

In addition, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Monday that "frustration and tension" between Flores and Grier was a major issue. Team owner Stephen Ross ultimately decided to side with Grier.

Jackson also noted that while many players liked Flores, some thought he was arrogant and had a "bristling personality." They believed he wasn't approachable and that it "was hard to read him."

Then came a report on Thursday that highlighted a potential rift between Flores and his players, specifically quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Michael Lombardi reported on the GM Shuffle podcast that Flores made it known to Tagovailoa that he would have preferred fellow Alabama alum Mac Jones as his QB.

"I don't think [Brian] Flores was shy about telling [Tagovailoa], 'Hey, I should have picked Mac Jones.' I don't think he was shy about telling him that. In fact, I know that he wasn't," Lombardi said.

In terms of Flores' fit in Houston, the Texans might be hoping hiring the former Dolphins head coach will help keep disgruntled quarterback Deshaun Watson with the team. Watson has wanted out of Houston since before the 2021 season, which he sat out, but there has been plenty of speculation that the Clemson product wanted to be traded to the Dolphins to play under Flores.

A coaching change probably won't be enough to keep Watson in Houston, but Flores is arguably one of the best head coaching candidates on the market, so the franchise would be in good hands moving forward regardless.

As for Mayo, he also has connections to Houston given his relationship with Easterby and Caserio. The 35-year-old spent his entire eight-year playing career in New England from 2008-15 before joining the organization as a coach in 2019.

And while Mayo has no head coaching experience, he is also drawing interest from the Denver Broncos for their vacant HC position after firing Vic Fangio on Sunday. Mayo also interviewed for the Philadelphia Eagles head coaching position last year before they hired Nick Sirianni.

The Texans have not had a winning season since 2019 and have won just four games in each of their last two seasons. In addition to Flores and Mayo, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is among the Texans' top candidates, per Wilson
