Jets' Breece Hall Feared to Have ACL Injury After Being Carted off vs. Broncos

New York Jets rookie running back Breece Hall is feared to have suffered an ACL injury after being carted off in the second quarter of Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

Jets head coach Robert Salah told reporters the injury "doesn't look good" and that it was "likely" an ACL issue.

Thus far in his debut NFL season, the 21-year-old had registered 391 yards and three touchdowns entering Sunday's game. He ran for 72 yards and a score on a 65-yard scamper prior to exiting the game against Denver.

Hall entered the 2022 NFL draft as the consensus top running back, and the Jets made him the first back off the board when they selected him with the No. 36 overall pick in the second round.

There was a great deal of excitement regarding his arrival in New York given what he accomplished during his three-year collegiate career at Iowa State.

All told, Hall racked up 3,941 yards and 50 touchdowns on the ground to go along with 82 receptions for 734 yards and six receiving scores.

Hall reached the 20 rushing touchdowns mark in both his sophomore and junior years, and the latter campaign in 2021 yielded his best all-around performance.

In addition to rushing for 1,472 yards and 20 touchdowns, he set personal bests across the board as a pass-catcher with 36 grabs for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

The former Cyclones star's status as a do-everything back is likely what appealed to the Jets most, as he was viewed as someone who could help quarterback Zach Wilson in myriad ways.

While losing Hall for the rest of the season would be a blow to the Jets offense, they do have some solid backfield depth that should allow them to make do if he misses action.

Dynamic 2021 fourth-round pick Michael Carter will take over as the primary back in his absence, with Ty Johnson also pitching in.

Elijah Moore Won't Play vs. Broncos; Saleh Says Jets Won't Trade WR Despite Request

Elijah Moore is reportedly back at the New York Jets' practice facility, but he will not take the field for Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos.

ESPN's Adam Schefter noted the wide receiver was at practice on Friday, one day after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Moore requested a trade and is "frustrated with his role."

However, head coach Robert Saleh told reporters the Ole Miss product will not play against Denver. He also said the team has no intention of trading Moore, adding the request is "part of what we deal with every day."

According to ESPN's Rich Cimini, the Jets sent the wide receiver home Thursday for what they deemed a "personal day."

Cimini reported New York is not considering trading the 22-year-old even though Saleh and offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur "believed it would be best if Moore left the facility for a day to let his emotions—and theirs—settle down" after he told people within the organization he is not happy with his role.

He had zero targets in Sunday's win over the Green Bay Packers and tweeted the following: "If I say what I really wanna say...I'll be the selfish guy...we winning. Grateful! Huge blessing! All I ever wanted. Butter sweet for me em but I'll be solid. So I'll just stay quiet. Just know I don't understand either."

While Moore may be frustrated, the Jets are one of the NFL's pleasant surprises in the early going this season.

They are 4-2 following three straight victories over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins and Packers. The Green Bay win in particular was impressive, as the defense held Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense to a mere 10 points.

The offense didn't air it out as much while protecting leads and attempted just 39 combined passes against the Dolphins and Packers. Quarterback Zach Wilson pointed that out while still offering support for Moore.

"It's not a thing where I'm trying to avoid him or whatever it is, because he's a great player," Wilson said. "I'm just going through my progressions. We're always talking about routes, how we can clean things up every week. It's being patient and trusting the process. I only had 10 completions last week, but we won the game, so it's awesome. I love him, and I hope he understands he's special to our team."

Yet Moore's Ole Miss teammate, Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver AJ Brown, seemed to think he'd be better off somewhere else:

It seems as if Moore will remain with the Jets barring a change of heart from the team, and his presence could help them compete in games they are trailing and need to turn to the aerial attack more than they have in the recent past.

They play three straight AFC East divisional games against the New England Patriots (twice) and Buffalo Bills after the Broncos matchup, so those situations could be on the immediate horizon even though he won't take the field in Denver.

The New York Jets announced Sunday that former right tackle Marvin Powell died at the age of 67.

Powell spent nine seasons in New York and played his final two years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The No. 4 overall pick in the 1977 NFL draft, he was a five-time Pro Bowler and a three-time All-Pro.

Powell also had a decorated college career. He was a member of USC's national championship-winning squad in 1974 and earned All-American honors in two seasons. The North Carolina native was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

"Marvin was one of the best linemen I've ever seen," former Jets wide receiver Wesley Walker said to Randy Lange of the team's official site. "He was just a physical specimen. He was just good. I just loved him."

Marty Lyons, who played opposite Powell on the defensive line, lauded his former teammate's impact off the field.

"Marvin was smart, he was intelligent," Lyons said. "He was the players' rep for us. He cared about the team, he cared about society. He wanted to make a difference."

NorthJersey.com's Andy Vasquez listed Powell at No. 17 when he ranked the 100 greatest players in Jets history in August 2019.

Jets QB Zach Wilson to Return from Knee Surgery for Season Debut vs. Steelers

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson will make his season debut on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Wilson is officially off the injury report and participated fully in Friday's practice.

Wilson suffered a torn meniscus in the Jets' preseason opener on Aug. 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He had surgery to repair the injury and wound up missing the first three games of the regular season.

Rapoport reported on Sept. 25 that Wilson was expected to be cleared in time to potentially play in Week 4.

The Jets turned to Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback for the first three games this season. The Super Bowl 47 MVP played surprisingly well, highlighted by a four-touchdown performance in a Week 2 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

Despite some of the offensive success with Flacco, the Jets need to see what Wilson can do this season. He had a disappointing rookie campaign after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft.

New York's front office took steps to give Wilson help in an effort to make his job easier. Laken Tomlinson was signed to boost the offensive line, though he's struggled in his first three games with the team. C.J. Uzomah was brought in to give the team a pass-catching tight end. The Jets also used the No. 10 overall pick in this year's draft to select Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson.

With those pieces in place, the Jets will hope Wilson can take significant steps forward. He threw for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions with a 55.6 completion percentage in 13 starts last year.

Sunday will give the team its first look at what Wilson is capable of doing with more talent surrounding him.

Jets' Zach Wilson Cleared to Start vs. Steelers After Knee Injury Recovery

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced Wednesday quarterback Zach Wilson has been medically cleared to return from a knee injury that forced him to miss the 2022 season's first three games.

Saleh confirmed Wilson is expected to start Sunday's Week 4 road game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, taking the reins of the offense back from Joe Flacco.

Wilson was injured during an Aug. 12 exhibition matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. He underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a meniscus tear four days later.

Speaking ahead of the Jets' regular-season opener in early September, the second-year signal-caller expressed confidence it could still be a successful campaign.

"For what the injury was, I'm very optimistic to be able to get back and still play football the way I want to this year," Wilson told reporters.

New York selected the 23-year-old BYU alum with the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. He endured an up-and-down rookie season, tallying 13 total touchdowns (nine passing and four rushing) and 11 interceptions across 13 appearances.

He'll inherit a Jets attack that has performed quite well with Flacco at the helm. The team ranks ninth in total offense (370 yards per game) through three weeks.

The Jets are 1-2, but both losses came against AFC contenders, the Baltimore Ravens and reigning conference champion Cincinnati Bengals.

New York's schedule doesn't get much easier ahead of its Week 10 bye. The team's next six games include home matchups against its three AFC East rivals, the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills, also with road trips to face the Steelers, Green Bay Packers and Denver Broncos.

Wilson and Co. have a more favorable slate down the stretch, but if they want to make a playoff push, trying to get through the first half of the schedule around .500 will be important.

In the short term, all eyes will be on the Jets quarterback when he makes his season debut, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. ET at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday.

Robert Saleh: Zach Wilson Will Be Jets' Starting QB Once He Returns from Knee Injury

There is no quarterback controversy with the New York Jets. Zach Wilson will regain his starting spot from Joe Flacco the moment he's cleared to play, coach Robert Saleh told reporters Wednesday.

"He's the future of the organization. As soon as the doctors clear him, we'll get him on the field," Saleh said.

Flacco has thrown for 616 yards and five touchdowns against one interception over the first two weeks and led the Jets to a thrilling 31-30 comeback victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

The veteran's stellar start to the season led to some wondering whether the Jets offense would be better off with Flacco starting over Wilson, who is out with a knee injury. Wilson has already been ruled out for this week's game against the Cincinnati Bengals but has a chance to play in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

From a purely objective standpoint, it's a patently ridiculous premise that the Jets would give up on their 2021 first-round quarterback in favor of a 37-year-old less than two years into Wilson's career. The BYU product was anything but spectacular last season, but he was surrounded by one of the sport's worst supporting casts.

Memes aside, Flacco was never an elite option at quarterback during any point of his NFL career—aside from a magical Super Bowl run that put nine figures in his bank account.

The Jets have to see what they have in Wilson to determine whether he's their quarterback of the future. Even if Flacco is the slightly better option at this juncture—and there's no guarantee he is—the days in his NFL career are numbered. Wilson is 23 years old.

Perhaps this is a conversation worth revisiting if Wilson fails to show marked improvement in his second season, but there's no value in making a panic move now just because Jets fans are desperate for a winner.

Report: Joe Flacco Will Start for Jets vs. Browns amid Zach Wilson's Knee Injury

Joe Flacco will reportedly remain the New York Jets' starting quarterback for Sunday's Week 2 road game against the Cleveland Browns.

ESPN's Rich Cimini reported Wednesday a switch to fellow backup Mike White was not "strongly considered" after a 24-9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 1 as starter Zach Wilson continues to recover from a knee injury.

Flacco was called on far more frequently than expected in the season opener. He completed 37 of his league-high 59 attempts for 307 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Throwing the ball nearly 60 times while the running back tandem of Michael Carter and Breece Hall combined for just 16 carries is not the Jets' path to success, and it didn't help that the 37-year-old veteran was under constant pressure due to lackluster line play.

"There were plays when we weren't helping Joe, and there were plays when he wasn't helping either," head coach Robert Saleh told reporters.

The offense's poor production combined with Saleh's lukewarm support of Flacco afterward raised questions about whether White would get a chance to lead the unit in Week 2.

White was a one-game sensation last year, throwing for 405 yards and three touchdowns in an upset win over the eventual AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals on Halloween, but he finished the year with five TDs and eight interceptions in four appearances.

It sounds like the Jets are going to stick with Flacco against the Browns, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see a quarterback change if the team struggles again in Week 2.

Saleh confirmed before the opener it's unlikely Wilson will be ready before a Week 4 road clash with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

"We're going to make sure mind and body are 110 percent and make sure we do right by him," Saleh said. "We feel like, from talking to the doctors and everyone, it's going to be that Pittsburgh week."

So if Flacco struggles again Sunday, White could get his chance for a repeat performance against the Bengals in Week 3 before the 2021 second overall pick reclaims his spot atop the depth chart.

The Jets need a spark of any kind to get their season going since they won't have much margin for error if they want to make a playoff push in the loaded AFC.

Robert Saleh Says He's 'Taking Receipts' on People Who Mock Jets During Struggles

New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh may not be Santa Claus, but he's making a list and checking and twice. And you better believe he's gonna find out whether you've been naughty or nice to his team.

Although the Jets lost their opener, 24-9, to the Baltimore Ravens, Saleh told reporters Monday he knows a breakthrough is "going to happen."

"We're all taking receipts on all the people who continually mock and say that we're not going to do anything," he said. "I'm taking receipts and I'm going to be more than happy to share them with all of you when all is said and done."

The Jets haven't made the playoffs since 2015 which was also their last winning season. New York's .327 winning percentage between 2015-21 is the third-lowest in the league, per Stathead.

Saleh reflected that all of the losing is "exhausting" for everyone involved, be it the players, coaches, fans or media covering the team.

Establishing the right kind of culture is imperative for building a winner. Attempting to shake a franchise out of a years-long stupor requires taking bold action and saying bold things.

Saleh's comments might be very prescient in a few weeks if the Jets start piling up the wins. He was setting a tone and leading his players by example.

If the losing continues, however, then this the kind of thing that will follow Saleh across his entire tenure. Just ask Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, whose dalliance with analytics when he was unemployed has been a running theme whenever the Cowboys lose.

You can't blame a head coach for wanting to believe in his players and enthusiastically backing them in public. Still, the Jets' skeptics will be all too happy to expense their receipts at the end of the year should the team remain a laughingstock.

Jets' Duane Brown Put on IR With Shoulder Injury; Reportedly Targeting Week 5 Return

New York Jets left tackle Duane Brown has been placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The Jets hope Brown can return within a few weeks. Surgery was on the table, but he opted to rehab in an effort to return by Week 5, Garafolo added.

Brown suffered the injury during Monday's practice and had already been ruled out for Sunday's season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Jets signed Brown to a two-year, $20 million contract last month after Mekhi Becton was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a fractured right knee cap. It was tough news for the team as Becton missed nearly all of the 2021 campaign with an injury to the same knee.

Brown was selected by the Houston Texans 26th overall in the 2008 NFL draft out of Virginia Tech. He spent nine-and-a-half seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Seattle Seahawks during the 2017 campaign.

The 37-year-old remained in Seattle through the 2021 season. He is a five-time Pro Bowler and one-time first-team All-Pro.

With Brown sidelined, the Jets figure to start George Fant at left tackle and rookie Max Mitchell at right tackle against Baltimore.
