Lions Owner Sheila Ford Hamp Backs Dan Campbell, GM Brad Holmes Despite 1-5 Start

Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford Hamp hasn't lost faith in head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes despite the team's 1-5 start to the 2022 NFL season.

Ford Hamp acknowledged to reporters Wednesday she's frustrated with the Lions' position but said "we really are making progress." She added Campbell and Holmes were tasked with a "huge teardown and then turnaround," so this isn't the time to be hasty.

"We've got 11 more games to go, so I just don't want to ruin it, push the panic button and give up the ship because I think we've got the right people in place to pull this off, and I truly believe that," she said, per ESPN's Eric Woodyard. "And I wouldn't say that if I didn't believe it."

Detroit hired Holmes and then Campbell in January 2021. Shortly after the latter's arrival, the team lined up Matthew Stafford's trade to the Los Angeles Rams, which signaled a significant rebuild.

The Lions proceeded to go 3-13-1 in 2021, which was effectively a mulligan for everyone involved. Nobody expected them to be title contenders in 2022, but seeing some progress was a reasonable demand.

Detroit's record is a somewhat unfair reflection of its performance. The team's first three losses were all by four points or fewer, and it sits 26th in overall efficiency on Football Outsiders. The Lions aren't good, but they aren't abjectly awful, either.

One could argue they're in a holding pattern anyway until they can move on from Jared Goff at quarterback. The two-time Pro Bowler hasn't had a renaissance in the Motor City (4,828 yards, 30 touchdowns in 14 interceptions in 20 games), and winning in the NFL is difficult without a top-level quarterback.

Cutting Goff will become a realistic pathway this offseason, as his dead-cap hit will drop from $41.5 million to $10 million, per Spotrac. In addition, finishing with a terrible record works in Detroit's favor because it would potentially allow for Holmes and Campbell to select Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud or Alabama QB Bryce Young in the 2023 draft.

Holmes signed a five-year deal, while Campbell got a six-year pact. In both cases, it appears they'll have every chance to see their long-term vision through.

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown has been ruled out of Sunday's game with a concussion, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The wideout had one catch for four yards against the Dallas Cowboys, but he took a hard hit at the end of the play and was taken out of the game for evaluation.

St. Brown missed time earlier this season—a Week 4 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks—because of an ankle injury suffered in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings.

The 2021 fourth-round pick had put together a solid season before suffering the ailment, catching 23 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns through the first three weeks. He now has just five catches for 22 yards in the two games since.

This is St. Brown's second season in the NFL, and he didn't miss any time as a rookie in 2021, appearing in all 17 games for the Lions and making nine starts. He caught 90 passes for 912 yards and five touchdowns last season.

When St. Brown is sidelined, the Lions and quarterback Jared Goff can rely on D.J. Chark, Josh Reynolds and Kalif Raymond. Tight end T.J. Hockenson will also remain a big part of the offense.

The Lions entered Week 7 with a 1-4 record and in last place in the NFC North.

Lions' Jamaal Williams Fined $13,261 for 'Unsportsmanlike' TD Dance vs. Vikings

Detroit Lions running back Jamaal Williams has been fined $13,261 for unsportsmanlike conduct on his touchdown celebration during a Week 3 loss to the Detroit Lions, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Williams brought out his version of the famous Hingle McCringleberry three-pump hip thrust celebration from the famed Key and Peele sketch show. He was given a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct following the celebration.

Williams discussed the celebration with reporters after the game:

“It’s not even thrusting. It’s more like a wave. ... I’ve been getting away with it for all these years but now they want to bust me for it. I was pissed. I was sad and disappointed in myself because I gave the team a penalty."

Williams isn't the first NFL player to mimic McCringleberry.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers celebrated a touchdown on Oct. 18, 2020, by hitting the three-pump hip thrust following a touchdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Williams, who is in his second season with the Lions, is off to a hot start. He has rushed for 168 yards and four touchdowns in three games, in addition to catching four passes for 29 yards.

The 27-year-old mainly serves as the backup to D'Andre Swift, but he's expected to see more playing time in Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks as Swift has been ruled out with a shoulder sprain and lingering ankle ailment.

Williams signed a two-year deal with the Lions ahead of the 2021 campaign and is expected to be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The BYU product began his NFL career with the Packers, which selected him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft. In four seasons with the Green and Gold, he rushed for 1,985 yards and 10 touchdowns in 60 games. He also caught 122 passes for 961 yards and eight scores.

Jamaal Williams' Updated Fantasy Outlook After D'Andre Swift Injury

Jamaal Williams is set to be more than a touchdown vulture in the Detroit Lions' backfield.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters on Friday that D'Andre Swift is "probably out" for the team's matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, which pushes the 27-year-old Williams up the depth chart.

This is the second time Detroit has had to turn to the 2017 fourth-round pick as the primary ball-carrier. Swift was sidelined with a shoulder sprain last season as well, costing him four games.

Williams, however, is unlikely to be available for most fantasy managers. He's rostered in 85 percent of Yahoo Sports leagues.

Through three games, the 6'0", 224-pound running back has gone for 168 yards and four touchdowns on the ground along with four receptions for 29 yards.

Williams' red-zone usage was already leeching away some of Swift's fantasy value. He had two touchdown runs of one yard in a Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and his two TDs against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3 totaled 15 yards.

Now, he's poised to get a much higher volume of touches, leaving the calculus from here pretty straightforward.

Under normal circumstances, Williams is a good streaming option because of his propensity to find the end zone. If an opposing defense regularly lets offenses march down the field and struggles in short-yardage situations, that's his time to shine.

Now that he's the No. 1 back for the Lions, Williams becomes a much safer flex option, albeit one with a legitimate RB1 ceiling given his touchdown potential.

Lions RB D'Andre Swift 'Probably out' vs. Seahawks with Shoulder Injury, Says HC

While it isn't yet official, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell does not expect running back D'Andre Swift to play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

According to Colton Pouncy of The Athletic, Campbell said Friday that Swift is "probably out" due to a shoulder injury.

Swift sprained his shoulder last week against the Minnesota Vikings, and Campbell suggested at the time that the Lions would consider resting him for two weeks, so he could come out of the bye week healthy.

When on the field, the Georgia product has the ability to be a game-changing presence in the backfield for the Lions. He tallied 617 yards and five touchdowns on the ground and 452 yards and two scores through the air last season.

Swift is off to a hot start this season, rushing for 231 yards and one touchdown, while also catching eight passes for 77 yards and one score in three games.

Fortunately for the Lions, they have one of the more established backup running backs in the league in Jamaal Williams. He spent the first four seasons of his career on the Green Bay Packers and ran for 601 yards in 2021 whilst in his first season in Detroit.

The 27-year-old has 168 yards and a league-high four touchdowns on the ground in three games this year and will likely be asked to shoulder even more of the offensive responsibilities if Swift does indeed miss this week's game.

Amon-Ra St. Brown Won't Play for Lions vs. Seahawks Because of Ankle Injury

Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown won't play Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coach Dan Campbell announced on Friday the second-year wide receiver has been ruled out because of an ankle injury.

St. Brown was able to play 73 percent of Detroit's offensive snaps in Week 3 vs. the Minnesota Vikings despite suffering a sprained ankle in the second quarter.

The 2021 fourth-round pick had a blistering finish to his rookie season, hauling in 51 passes for 560 yards and five touchdowns Detroit's last six games.

That raised expectations for St. Brown coming into the 2022 campaign, and he has more than delivered so far. Through three games, he has 23 receptions for 253 yards and three scores.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported earlier in the week that test results on St. Brown's ankle were encouraging and he shouldn't be out for an extended period of time.

The franchise is still treading water for the most part as the front office attempts to build a winner under head coach Dan Campbell. St. Brown's contributions aren't going to have a significant impact in his team's record.

However, the 22-year-old emerging as a bona fide elite wideout would be a big development for the Lions. With the way the receiver market is trending, his impending free agency in 2025 can't be totally ignored, either.

Detroit will hope St. Brown isn't on the shelf for too long as it would disrupt his development.

Lions' D'Andre Swift Unlikely to Play vs. Seahawks Due to Shoulder Injury

Detroit Lions running back D'Andre Swift is unlikely to play in the team's Week 4 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks because of a shoulder injury.

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Swift would have to improve "significantly" over the next three days to suit up.

"We knew it would be this hard to get through a full season with him healthy," Campbell told reporters Wednesday. "That's the nature of the position."

Swift was injured in Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He was limited to just seven carries for 31 yards while adding three receptions for 15 yards.

Jamaal Williams took over the bulk of the work, rushing for 87 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries and adding 20 more yards on two receptions. Williams will get the majority of the snap total in Week 4 if Swift can't go and is a must-start in nearly every fantasy format against a shaky Seattle front seven.

Craig Reynolds will likely slide into the backup role after receiving six carries in spell of Williams last week. Justin Jackson is the Lions' fourth running back but has not gotten a touch this season.

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff sold his Los Angeles-area home for almost $6.4 million, according to the Los Angeles Times' Jack Flemming.

Goff listed the home for $7.5 million in June. The California native spent his first five seasons with the Los Angeles Rams prior to his 2021 trade to the Lions. He purchased the home for a little more than $4 million in May 2018.

The property includes a 4,300-square-foot main house with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. There's also a guest house that totals 1,100 square feet. Among the amenities are a game room, swimming pool, spa and an outdoor putting green.

Although Goff ultimately got less than he was initially asking, he still made a handsome profit from the deal.

Fantasy Alert: Lions' Amon-Ra St. Brown's Ankle Injury Not Expected to Be Long-Term

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown reportedly isn't expected to miss significant time with an ankle injury suffered during Sunday's loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, tests on St. Brown's ankle were "encouraging," and if he does have to miss some time, "it shouldn't be anything long-term."

St. Brown suffered the injury during the second quarter and attempted to gut it out the rest of the way, making six receptions for 73 yards and playing 73 percent of the team's offensive snaps.

St. Brown, who is in the midst of his second NFL season after going in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL draft, has been one of the top wideouts in the league thus far.

Through three games, the USC product has recorded 23 receptions for 253 yards and three touchdowns, plus he has rushed two times for 68 yards.

The 22-year-old receiver has simply carried over his strong play from last season, when he delivered 90 catches for 912 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie.

St. Brown was especially strong down the stretch last season, catching eight or more passes in each of his final six games and finishing with 51 grabs for 560 yards and five scores during that stretch.

He has once again been quarterback Jared Goff's favorite target this season, and he is a big reason why the Lions are averaging 31.6 points per game and have been in every game this season despite their 1-2 record.

St. Brown's status for Sunday's Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks isn't yet clear, but if he isn't healthy enough to go, the Lions could potentially be inclined to sit him the next two weeks, as they have a Week 6 bye.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell has already admitted that the team is considering sitting running back D'Andre Swift the next two weeks so he can rest his injured shoulder, per Benjamin Raven of MLive.com.

If St. Brown misses any time, it would represent a huge hit to Detroit's offense, especially if Swift lands on the shelf as well.

In terms of wide receivers, veteran DJ Chark would likely step into the No. 1 role, and he could be worth a speculative pickup in fantasy football leagues in case St. Brown doesn't play in Week 4 or 5.

Josh Reynolds is in the same boat, as he is second on the team in both receptions and receiving yardage, plus tight end T.J. Hockenson would undoubtedly see an uptick in usage.
