Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh told reporters after Saturday's 29-7 win over the Michigan State Spartans that two of his players were assaulted in the tunnel after the game.

The Wolverines would not confirm which players were attacked. However, Brandon Brown of Sports Illustrated reported defensive back Ja'Den McBurrows is "100 percent" one of the victims.

"He is very clearly the player who is jumped by around 10 Spartans," Brown wrote in a tweet.

"Another team should not grab a player and do what they did," Michigan director of athletics Warde Manuel told reporters. "We will let the Big Ten and law enforcement handle it. This is not what a rivalry should be about."

The "trash talking and jostling" between Michigan and Michigan State players began while Harbaugh and Spartans head coach Mel Tucker were shaking hands after the game, per Andrew Hammond of the Detroit Free Press.

Tucker told reporters after the game that he is unsure how the situation in the tunnel unfolded, adding "things were heated, and we have to figure out what happened."

The No. 4 Wolverines were dominant against the unranked Spartans. Quarterback J.J. McCarthy completed 15 of 25 passes for 167 yards and one touchdown while running back Blake Corum rushed for 177 yards and a score on 33 carries. Corum also scored a two-yard reception.

McBurrows, the player reportedly attacked in the tunnel, has yet to appear in a game for the Wolverines this season. He appeared in just four games during the 2021 campaign as a freshman.

Michigan improved to 8-0 on the season with the win, while Michigan State dropped to 3-5.

The Wolverines ended a two-game losing streak to their in-state rivals and improved to 72-38-5 all-time in the series.

The Wolverines move on to face Rutgers next weekend, while the Spartans will face No. 17 Illinois.

Michigan's Jake Moody Inspires Heisman Trophy Jokes on Twitter with Big Game vs. MSU

Michigan place kicker Jake Moody made five field goals en route to the No. 4 Wolverines' 29-7 win over rival Michigan State on Saturday from Ann Arbor's Michigan Stadium.

The Wolverines knocked on the doorstep of the end zone all night but only got there twice. That wasn't an issue, however, as Moody drilled field goals from 22, 25, 39, 33 and 54 yards out to finish off drives and keep MSU at bay.

The 54-yarder gave Moody 16 points on the evening and Michigan a 22-7 lead. He later tacked on another extra point to cap the scoring.

Moody has now made 18-of-21 field goals on the year, including all nine of his attempts over the past two games. His accuracy rate is more impressive when considering that one of the misses was blocked, and another was from 62 yards out.

He's a true weapon for the Michigan offense, which ground down the Spartan defense with the running game thanks largely to Blake Corum's 177 rushing yards.

On a night where there wasn't much offensive fireworks, Moody's performance caught the attention of Twitter, which jokingly posited that he should be in line for a Heisman Trophy.

Moody won't get a Heisman, but the Lou Groza Award as the nation's best collegiate kicker could certainly be in his grasp.

For now, the 8-0 Wolverines are marching ahead to face host Rutgers on Saturday.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is no longer the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker has taken over as the betting favorite to win college football's most prestigious award with -110 odds, per DraftKings SportsBook.

Here's a look at the top 10:

  • Hendon Hooker, QB, Tennessee: -110
  • C.J. Stroud, QB, Ohio State: +160
  • Caleb Williams, QB, USC: +1600
  • Blake Corum, RB, Michigan: +1800
  • Bo Nix, QB, Oregon: +2200
  • Bryce Young, QB, Alabama: +2200
  • Jalin Hyatt, WR, Tennessee: +3000
  • Max Duggan, QB, TCU: +3000
  • Chase Brown, RB, Illinois: +3500
  • Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Alabama: +4000

Hooker has been one of the most impressive quarterbacks in college football this season.

The 24-year-old entered Saturday's game against Kentucky having completed 70.6 percent of his passes for 2,093 yards and 18 touchdowns against one interception in seven games. He has also rushed for 315 yards and three scores on 63 carries.

Stroud has very similar passing numbers through seven games with the Buckeyes. He has completed 70 percent of his passes for 2,023 yards and 28 touchdowns against four interceptions.

At this point, it's a little too early to say who might win the Heisman, but Hooker is giving Stroud a run for his money.

Brock Bowers Hyped as One of CFB's Biggest Stars in No. 1 Georgia's Rout of Florida

Georgia Bulldogs sophomore tight end Brock Bowers might have been the nation's best kept secret at one point, but he's quickly establishing himself as one of college football's biggest superstars.

Bowers helped lead the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs (8-0) to a 42-20 win over the Florida Gators by registering five catches for a career-high 154 yards and a score. His touchdown came on an insane circus catch that was tipped by a defender and taken 73 yards to the house.

While Georgia is known for its outstanding run game, Bowers is making it hard for the team not to attack through the air thanks to his connection with quarterback Stetson Bennett. He's a unique offensive weapon that can be dominant when given the opportunity.

Fans on social media were impressed with Bowers' performance on Saturday, with some touting him as the next big thing in college football:

https://twitter.com/UGANatty22/status/1586469717643972608

Bowers was named SEC Freshman of the Year in 2021 after recording 56 catches for 882 yards and 13 touchdowns. He leads the Bulldogs in most receiving categories this season, and he's the clear focal point of the passing attack.

It's clear that Georgia has found a gem in Bowers. He will have the chance to showcase his skills once again next Saturday when the Bulldogs look to move to 9-0 in a marquee matchup against No. 3 Tennessee (7-0).

CFB Twitter Raves About Marvin Harrison Jr., J.T. Tuimoloau in OSU's Win over PSU

On a day when Ohio State either trailed or barely led for much of the game, it was a dominant effort by sophomore defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau and sophomore wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. that helped the Buckeyes remain undefeated.

In a 44-31 win for No. 2 OSU over the rival No. 13 Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pennsylvania, Tuimoloau had a hand in forcing all four turnovers PSU quarterback Sean Clifford committed.

During the first half, Tuimoloau deflected a pass that was intercepted by Zach Harrison and then recorded an interception of his own when he jumped a route:

As big as those plays were, his most significant play came in the fourth quarter with Ohio State leading by only two when he sacked Clifford, stripped him of the ball and recovered the fumble:

After Tuimoloau completed the hat trick, the Buckeyes scored on the next play via a 24-yard touchdown pass from C.J. Stroud to Cade Stover, extending the lead to nine points with the PAT.

As if that weren't enough, Tuimoloau iced the game for Ohio State with less than three minutes remaining when he picked off Clifford for a second time and returned it 14 yards for a touchdown:

With two interceptions, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery, Tuimoloau accomplished an exceedingly rare feat, per Jason Starrett of The Athletic:

Given how much of an impact Tuimoloau had on the outcome of the game, fans and experts alike showered him with praise on Twitter as the Buckeyes improved to 8-0:

Although the overall numbers look solid with more than 400 yards of total offense, the Buckeyes struggled on that side of the ball for much of the day because of the inability to get anything going in the running game.

The one offensive constant that kept OSU in the game until an outburst in the fourth quarter was the connection between Stroud and Harrison.

Harrison, who is the son of Pro Football Hall of Fame wideout and Indianapolis Colts legend Marvin Harrison, continued his spectacular season with 10 receptions for 185 yards.

Like Tuimoloau, Harrison was celebrated Saturday on Twitter for another spectacular showing that continued the legacy of great wide receivers at Ohio State:

Ohio State looked out of sync and in danger of getting upset at times Saturday, but the Buckeyes' elite talent level carried them.

OSU has some of the best players in the nation on both the defensive and offensive sides of the ball in Tuiomoloau and Harrison, and they both proved why against the Nittany Lions.

Entering play Saturday, there were six undefeated teams with strong cases for the College Football Playoff, as well as some quality one-loss teams in Alabama, Oregon and USC.

That made winning of the utmost importance for Ohio State, and both Tuiomoloau and Harrison ensured that it happened against one of the program's chief rivals.

Jackson State football head coach Deion Sanders has had multiple opportunities to jump to an FBS school, but Saturday he made it clear he's happy where he is.

During an appearance on College GameDay, Sanders acknowledged that he has been pursued by other schools, but he said he has no intentions of leaving Jackson State.

"I'd be a fool and a liar to tell you I'm not going to entertain those things, because I am," Sanders said. "But I have made no plans to move or go anywhere."

According to 247Sports' Chris Hummer, Sanders was "deeply involved" in the TCU job opening last year before Sonny Dykes was hired to replace Gary Patterson. Hummer noted that Sanders is expected to be "in the mix for several FBS jobs this cycle, too."

This isn't the first time Coach Prime has discussed his openness to job offers. During an appearance on 60 Minutes this month, he was asked how he'd respond to being approached by Power Five schools, and he said: "I'm going to have to entertain it. Straight up. I'd be a fool not to."

In his third year as Jackson State head coach, Sanders has led the Tigers to a 7-0 record entering Saturday's game against Southern (5-2). Last season, the team went 11-2 overall and 9-0 in the SWAC to win its first conference title since 2007. Sanders was named the recipient of the Eddie Robinson Award, which is given to the top FCS coach in the nation.

Sanders has also established himself as a master recruiter, most notably flipping Class of 2022 No. 1 prospect Travis Hunter from his commitment to Florida State to instead sign with the Tigers. Hunter is the first 5-star recruit to sign with an FCS program, per Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

During his time at Jackson State, Sanders has brought more attention to HBCU football programs as a whole. It will be interesting to see if an opportunity arises that entices him to try his hand at coaching at the FBS level.

Lee Corso will not be present at Saturday's edition of College Gameday because of health concerns.

Show host Rece Davis announced the news Friday.

"LC's dealing with a few little health issues," Davis said. "They're taken of from what I'm told, and we're looking forward to having him back on that set with us and putting on those headgears in no time."

Corso, 87, played college football at Florida State from 1953 to 1957 before embarking on a coaching career that included stops leading Louisville, Indiana and Northern Illinois. He also spent the 1985 season coaching the USFL's Orlando Renegades.

In 1987, ESPN hired Corso as an analyst for College GameDay. He's been on the show ever since, with 2022 marking his 36th year providing commentary.

Corso missed the Oct. 1 and Oct. 8 editions of College Gameday. Davis reported on Oct. 1 that Corso woke up that morning "feeling a little bit under the weather."

Jackson, Mississippi, will be home for Saturday morning's edition of the show.

The 7-0 Jackson State Tigers, who are ranked ninth in the latest FCS Top 25 poll, will be hosting the Southern Jaguars for the BoomBox Classic at 1 p.m. ET. Former NFL star and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders serves as the head coach for Jackson State.

The University of Georgia announced that legendary former head football coach Vince Dooley died Friday at the age of 90.

Dooley was the Bulldogs' head coach from 1964 through 1988, and he also served as the University of Georgia's athletic director from 1979 to 2004.

In his 25 seasons as Georgia's head coach, Dooley went 201-77-10, won six SEC titles and a national championship in 1980.

With Dooley at the helm, the Bulldogs went a perfect 12-0 in 1980 and defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 17-10 in the Sugar Bowl to cement their status as national champions.

That would prove to be Georgia's final national title until last season when Kirby Smart led it to a victory over Alabama in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

Dooley's 201 wins rank first in program history, while his winning percentage of .715 is third among those who coached in at least 80 games, behind only Smart and Mark Richt.

In addition to being named SEC Coach of the Year on five occasions, Dooley was the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year in 1976 and won numerous national coach of the year awards in 1980.

Following the conclusion of his coaching career, Dooley was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1994.

More recently, the University of Georgia named the field at Samford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, Dooley Field in 2019 to honor the longtime coach.

Dooley attended Auburn University and played quarterback before spending eight years as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

When Dooley was named head coach at Georgia, the Bulldogs were coming off three consecutive losing seasons, but they only sported a losing record once during his quarter-century tenure.

Report: Hugh Freeze, Liberty Agree to 8-Year Contract Extension Approaching $40M

Oct 28, 2022
Hugh Freeze
Hugh Freeze

Liberty University and head football coach Hugh Freeze reportedly have reached an agreement on an eight-year contract extension through the 2030 season.

ESPN's Pete Thamel reported Friday the new deal "averages just under $5 million per year," bringing the total salary to around $40 million.

Freeze has compiled a 33-12 record since being hired by Liberty in December 2018. That includes a 7-1 mark so far this season, with the only loss coming against then-No. 19 Wake Forest by one point in mid-September.

After last week's win over BYU, the 53-year-old coach said he hoped the Flames would begin getting some respect from the poll voters.

"I would think we would probably get a few votes here and there, but you've got to go to Arkansas next," Freeze told reporters. "If you don't get it done against an SEC team, they just drop you out of it. How much value we put on that is pretty small, really. Now, at the end of the season, I think there's some value that would be put on that if we end up in it."

Liberty ended up in the "also receiving votes" section of both the Associated Press and Coaches polls.

Freeze previously compiled a 39-25 record across five years at Ole Miss, though 27 of those victories were later vacated following an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations by the program. The team lost a total of 33 wins as part of the punishment.

He resigned from his role with the Rebels in July 2017 after a separate investigation into allegations he called a female escort service, which the school said also showed a "concerning pattern" of use from his university-issued phone.

Before his time at Ole Miss, Freeze served as head coach at Lambuth and Arkansas State.

The Flames' clash with the Razorbacks is scheduled for a 4 p.m. ET kickoff Saturday at the Hogs' Razorback Stadium.
