Fan Banned by Browns After Hitting Owner Jimmy Haslam with Bottle During Loss to Jets

The Cleveland Browns intend to ban the fan who hit team owner Jimmy Haslam with a bottle during Sunday's 31-30 loss to the New York Jets, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

As Haslam was walking toward the Browns' tunnel following a touchdown from Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson, a fan threw a bottle that hit Haslam in the leg.

The Browns said in a statement:

"Fan, player and staff safety is the top priority in our building and behavior that puts others in danger will not be tolerated. Luckily no one was harmed in this incident and as a standard practice, we've cooperated with law enforcement authorities and security video footage of the object being thrown is in the appropriate hands. We will have no further comment on this matter."

TMZ later reported that Jeffery Miller was identified as the fan and arrested inside the stadium. He was charged with disorderly conduct, failure to comply with a lawful order and assault.

The Browns and Jets entered halftime at FirstEnergy Stadium tied 14-14. Cleveland held a 17-14 lead entering the fourth quarter, but New York went on to score 17 points in the final frame in what was a frustrating loss for the Browns.

Jets veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who is filling in for the injured Zach Wilson, completed 26 of 44 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns in the win.

Wilson is recovering from knee surgery on an injury he suffered during the preseason. He remains on track to start Week 4.

Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who is starting in place of the suspended Deshaun Watson, had a solid performance, completing 22 of 27 passes for 229 yards and one touchdown against one interception.

Watson was suspended 11 games and fined $5 million for violating the NFL's personal-conduct policy. Twenty-four women filed civil lawsuits against Watson alleging sexual assault or misconduct during massage sessions. He has reached confidential settlements with 23 of those women.

One of the most frustrating moments of Sunday's game for Cleveland came when running back Nick Chubb rushed in for his third touchdown of the game with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter. While the score gave the Browns a 30-17 lead, it left plenty of time on the clock for Flacco and the Jets to make a comeback.

Flacco connected with Corey Davis on a 66-yard touchdown, cutting Cleveland's lead to 30-24. The Jets then recovered the onside kick and Wilson went on to score the game-winner.

While it was a frustrating loss for the Browns, it's no excuse for fans to be hurling objects toward the field.

The Browns will take on the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday at FirstEnergy Stadium before traveling to face the Atlanta Falcons.

Browns' Nick Chubb Says He Shouldn't Have Scored 3rd TD vs. Jets: 'Cost Us the Game'

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb told reporters he shouldn't have scored his third and final touchdown en route to his team's 31-30 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday.

Chubb amassed 113 yards from scrimmage and three scores. His third touchdown came with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter to give the Browns a 30-17 lead.

The former Georgia star could have fallen before the goal line and allowed the Browns to run out the clock, as the Jets were out of timeouts.

Still, though, Chubb's performance was spectacular, and the Browns defense and special teams ultimately cost the team the game after New York scored a quick touchdown, recovered an onside kick and then added another score for the one-point victory.

Browns kicker Cade York also missed the extra point after Chubb's last touchdown.

Prior to the Chubb score, the Browns had 1st-and-10 from the Jets' 12-yard line. Chubb would have needed to fall somewhere between the first-down marker at the 2-yard line and the goal line.

In his defense, there wasn't a lot of space to fall down and still get the first, and with three Jets defenders in pursuit, there wasn't a lot of time, either. In the moment, it makes sense that he scampered in for the score:

Even after the touchdown, the Browns had a 99.9 percent win probability:

Then everything that could go wrong did.

The Jets quickly scored on a 66-yard strike from quarterback Joe Flacco to wide-open receiver Corey Davis:

New York then picked up the onside kick after a scramble:

Then, the Jets went 53 yards in nine plays, capped by a Garrett Wilson touchdown catch with 22 seconds remaining:

The Browns have lived on the edge over their first two games. Their first one resulted in a 26-24 road win over the Carolina Panthers after York made a 58-yard field goal.

They don't have much time to rebound from their most recent thriller, however, as Cleveland will host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday evening.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin to 'Exercise Appropriate Patience' with Mitch Trubisky, Offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers offense led by quarterback Mitch Trubisky has struggled through the first two games of the season, but head coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that he isn't pressing the panic button just yet.

"I'm going to exercise appropriate patience and continue to teach and ask the guys to continue to learn in an effort to continue to push this train down the track and get better," Tomlin said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "I think that if anyone is sitting here on Monday in Week 2 of this thing feeling happy, they're probably wrong or misinformed."

The Steelers fell to 1-1 this season with Sunday's 17-14 loss to the New England Patriots. Trubisky went 21-of-33 for 168 yards, a touchdown and an interception. It was the second straight game that he didn't take many shots downfield and he's now averaging 5.1 per attempt, which is second-worst in the NFL.

Tomlin acknowledged that he would like to see more aggression from Trubisky, though he added that the burden isn't solely on his shoulders but rather the team as a whole.

"I think he could [be more aggressive in the passing game]," Tomlin said, "And we could. ... We haven't scored enough points here last couple of weeks, but that's a collective, not just the quarterback position, not just the players. It's all of us are responsible for ringing up the scoreboard."

During Sunday's game, fans at Acrisure Stadium were chanting for Steelers rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett to be inserted into the game. Tomlin said he didn't hear the chants, but it sounds like Trubisky has the support of his teammates.

"I don't think there's any doubt with Mitch," Steelers center Mason Cole said Monday. "We know the kind of player Mitch is. Mitch is a winner; he's won in this league. He's won for this offense already. ... Everyone in this locker room, everyone in this organization believes in Mitch."

Trubisky will continue to have the opportunity to prove himself, but he is looking at a quick turnaround this week, as the Steelers will return to action on Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns.

Lamar Jackson on Ravens Blowing 21-Point Lead to Dolphins: 'We Just Got to Finish'

Lamar Jackson did almost everything Sunday.

Except for getting a win.

The Baltimore Ravens blew a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 42-38 loss to the Miami Dolphins, and Jackson told reporters: "We just got to finish when we're up. That was a good team win for them, though."

It's certainly hard to blame Jackson, who went 21-of-29 for 318 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions as a passer and ran for 119 yards and a score as a ball-carrier. His touchdown run went for 79 yards, as it appeared the Dolphins had no chance of slowing him down for much of the game.

Yet Miami's defense deserves some credit for allowing just one touchdown in the entire second half and three points in the fourth quarter.

It gave the visitors a puncher's chance, and they took advantage with 28 points in a shocking fourth-quarter performance.

Tua Tagovailoa threw touchdowns to River Cracraft, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in that final quarter, with Hill hauling in two, one of which went for 60 yards. Waddle's touchdown catch, which was his second of the day, gave the Dolphins the lead with 14 seconds remaining.

Jackson's Hail Mary into the end zone on the game's final play fell incomplete, and Baltimore was left stunned and 1-1 instead of 2-0.

The Ravens didn't score a point in the fourth quarter of their Week 1 victory over the New York Jets, although they had that game in control. It seemed like they had Sunday's game in control as well, although the Dolphins had other ideas.

Baltimore likely won't be taking its foot off the proverbial pedal in the near future after Sunday's game.

Bengals' Ja'Marr Chase on Cowboys' Trevon Diggs: 'He's a Little Hit or Miss'

Cincinnati Bengals star Ja'Marr Chase offered a scouting report for Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs ahead of Sunday's game between the two teams.

Speaking to reporters, Chase praised Diggs for having "great ball skills in the air" but noted "he's a little hit or miss" with technique.

Diggs was a breakout star last season because of his ability to get after the football. The 23-year-old led the league with 11 interceptions, tied for the most by any player in a single season since 1981 (Everson Walls).

All of those turnovers led to Diggs being named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro first team, but there were reasons opposing quarterbacks kept attacking him.

Per ProFootballReference.com, Diggs was charged with allowing 907 yards and 16.8 yards per reception in coverage. He had a missed tackle rate of 16.1 percent.

Pro Football Focus (h/t K.D. Drummond of USA Today) ranked Diggs as the No. 36 overall cornerback by its grading metrics in 2021.

Things did look better for Diggs in the Cowboys' first game this season. He only allowed three catches for 33 yards on six targets. The Alabama alum was in coverage on Mike Evans' touchdown catch in the third quarter that gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a 19-3 lead.

It's a small sample size that's hard to draw any big conclusions from, but Diggs certainly has tremendous skills that make him one of the most unique players in the NFL. He's got elite upside when everything is going right.

Sunday figures to be an excellent test of where Diggs' game is at right now, particularly when he's matched up with Chase. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year had 129 yards and one touchdown on 10 catches in Week 1.

Steelers' T.J. Watt Placed on IR After Suffering Pec Injury, Likely Out 6 Weeks

The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed T.J. Watt on injured reserve because of a torn pectoral muscle and signed edge-rusher David Anenih, the team announced Thursday.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday that Watt won't require surgery and could return after six weeks rather than miss the rest of the season.

Concern arose when Watt came off the field in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's 23-20 overtime victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 1. The cameras appeared to catch him telling team personnel he had torn his pectoral muscle.

The tear could've put the 27-year-old's season in jeopardy. Fortunately for him and the Steelers, they dodged the worst-case scenario.

An injured reserve designation requires a player to miss a minimum of four games. That would leave Watt eligible to return in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Based on Schefter's report, though, he might not return until around Pittsburgh's bye in Week 9.

Prior to the injury, Watt hadn't missed a beat after tying Michael Strahan's record for most sacks in a season (22.5). He had six tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss as he helped Pittsburgh force five turnovers.

The Steelers will have to hope Malik Reed can pose enough of a threat on the edge to avoid having the defense fall off too much.

Anenih, meanwhile, might have the opportunity to make his NFL debut. Signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in April, he had seven tackles and three sacks in three preseason contests.

The 23-year-old was on Tennessee's practice squad.

Lamar Jackson: 'Respectfully, I'm Done Talking About' Ravens Contract Situation

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson told reporters Wednesday that he is done talking about his contract situation.

"Respectfully, I'm done talking about it," Jackson said. "I told you guys before, I was going to be done with it Week 1. Week 1 is over with. We're done talking about it. I'm focused on the Dolphins now."

Jackson and the Ravens could not come to terms on a long-term extension before the signal-caller's Friday, Sept. 9 deadline.

He is currently playing out the final year on his rookie deal, and the Ravens are reportedly expected to place the franchise tag on him for 2023, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Jackson, who is representing himself in negotiations, turned down a five-year, $250 million extension with $133 million guaranteed, per Schefter and ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

He is reportedly looking for a fully guaranteed deal a la the one the Cleveland Browns gave quarterback Deshaun Watson (five years, $230 million).

Jackson certainly helped his own cause in Week 1 when he led the Ravens to a 24-9 road win over the New York Jets thanks in part to three touchdown passes.

For his career, Jackson has led the Ravens to three AFC North crowns in four years. Baltimore had the league's best record (14-2) in 2019, when Jackson won the NFL MVP in his first full season as the starter. He's certainly deserving of a lucrative, long-term deal more to his liking and may very well force Baltimore's hand down the line.

As for now, Jackson appeared to be in a jovial mood at the press conference, even offering popcorn to reporters with good questions.

The Ravens will now host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. ET. Miami started the year with a 20-7 win over the New England Patriots.

Mitch Trubisky Says Steelers Offense Needs to Have 'Killer Mindset' After Week 1

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky said the team's offense must develop a "killer mindset" after blowing a 14-point lead in a Week 1 win against the Cincinnati Bengals.

The Steelers took a 17-3 advantage midway through the second quarter of Sunday's game on a touchdown pass from Trubisky to running back Najee Harris, but they failed to find the end zone again as part of a 23-20 overtime triumph over the reigning AFC champions.

"When your defense is playing that well, and they're getting turnovers, you just want to take care of the football, but we've got to have that killer mindset, that aggressive mentality to really take teams out of the game and just not allow 'em to keep it close," Trubisky told reporters Wednesday.

Pittsburgh's defense forced five turnovers and its special teams came up with a clutch block on an extra point by Bengals kicker Evan McPherson at the end of regulation to force overtime. Chris Boswell kicked the game-winning field goal in the extra period.

Those heroics from the other two phases wouldn't have been necessary if the Trubisky-led offense was a little more efficient in the season opener. The unit finished the contest with just 267 total yards and 13 first downs on 15 drives.

The Steelers averaged just 5.1 yards per passing attempt in Week 1, which ranked 30th of the league's 32 teams. Harris and Co. also put up a mere 3.4 yards per carry on the ground.

Trubisky, who was signed as a free agent during the offseason following the retirement of longtime franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger, knows there's room for improvement.

"I think timing ... from my perspective can be better—either getting it out a little sooner or waiting for the plays to develop a little more, just to a lot of guys to be in the right spot the right time," he said. "But overall we just need to execute and make the plays."

Of course, a more optimistic view is the Steelers played far from their best game on offense and still found a way to knock off a top-tier AFC contender, which is a promising sign.

Pittsburgh's schedule in the coming weeks is quite favorable with home games against the New England Patriots (Week 2) and New York Jets (Week 4) sandwiched around a road trip to face the AFC North rival Cleveland Browns (Week 3).

It creates a plausible path to a 4-0 start for head coach Mike Tomlin's group, but the offense will need to make some serious strides to make that a reality.

If the improvement doesn't happen quickly, the calls for rookie Kenny Pickett to take over the offense figure to arrive in short order.

Jaylon Ferguson, Tony Siragusa to Be Honored by Ravens with Helmet Decals This Season

The Baltimore Ravens are honoring two former players who died earlier this year.

Per Clifton Brown of the team's official website, the Ravens will wear helmet decals for Jaylon Ferguson and Tony Siragusa all season. They will also observe a moment of silence for both men before Sunday's home opener against the Miami Dolphins.

Ferguson and Siragusa died one day apart over the summer.

The Ravens selected Ferguson in the third round of the 2019 NFL draft, and he played three seasons with the team. He died on June 21 at the age of 26 after being found unresponsive by Baltimore police officers at a house in the city's northern district.

According to Maryland's Chief Medical Examiner's Office, Ferguson died from combined effects of fentanyl and cocaine. His death was ruled an accident.

Siragusa, 55, died in his sleep on June 22. TMZ Sports noted the Toms River Police Department was dispatched to his home around 11:45 a.m. after "receiving a call about a 'CPR in progress.'"

Officers pronounced Siragusa dead at the scene upon arrival. An official cause of death has not been made public. The New Jersey native spent the final five seasons of his career with the Ravens, including winning Super Bowl XXXV in 2000.

As part of Sunday's pregame ceremony, Ravens executive vice president Ozzie Newsome will present Siragusa's wife, Kathy, with flowers on the field, and Ferguson's family will be on the Ravens sideline as honorary game captains.

Ferguson's family will also be presented with flowers by general manager Eric DeCosta.

Richard Sherman on Lamar Jackson, Ravens Contract Talks: 'Stop Pissing Him Off'

Free-agent NFL cornerback Richard Sherman has had Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson's back amid the signal-caller's efforts for a long-term contract extension, and that trend continued on Tuesday on his podcast.

Sherman believes Jackson made the right decision in not accepting the Ravens' final offer (six years, $290 million with $133 million guaranteed) and noted the following.

"He's going to be able to put more pressure on 'em by not showing up to camp," Sherman said.

"The distraction that it will be for the Baltimore Ravens when their starting quarterback doesn't show up for training camp and can't get punished, might show up Week 1 out of shape on purpose? You all might want to pay the man and stop pissing him off."

Sherman previously said he believed Jackson should hold out.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Jackson is looking for a fully guaranteed deal a la the one the Cleveland Browns gave Deshaun Watson (five years, $230 million).

Sherman supports Jackson's effort to get the fully guaranteed bag and noted it's uncommon to see quarterbacks winning the league MVP on a rookie deal. Jackson did just that in his first full year as a starter (2019).

Jackson, who is representing himself in negotiations, certainly did himself a big favor in his effort for a long-term deal in Week 1 by leading Baltimore to a 24-9 road win over the New York Jets. He completed 17 of 30 passes for 213 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in addition to 17 rushing yards.
