Nick Saban Says Alabama Players Can 'Learn from' Henry Ruggs III's Car Crash

Alabama head coach Nick Saban believes the fatal car crash involving Henry Ruggs III could be a teaching moment for others.
"I think this is something that a lot of folks can learn from—I think a lot of players on our team," Saban told reporters Thursday.
"When we say challenge people to make good choices and decisions—do the right thing. Because sometimes the consequences can be devastating. And these consequences are going to probably be pretty devastating to Henry."
Ruggs is facing felony charges of driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in death and reckless driving after his involvement in a collision Tuesday morning that killed 23-year-old Tina O. Tintor, per ESPN.
At a bail hearing Wednesday, prosecutors said Ruggs' blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit and he was driving 156 miles per hour before the crash.
Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said he could also file a second felony DUI charge against Ruggs because his girlfriend, Kiara Kilgo-Washington, was a passenger and suffered a serious arm injury in the crash, per ESPN.
The receiver spent three years at Alabama before becoming a first-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. He was released by the Raiders on Tuesday.
Saban will still support his former player following the accident.
"We love him," Saban said. "We're going to support him through it. But we also have a lot of compassion for the victims and our thoughts and prayers are also with them."
LSU QB Myles Brennan Plans to Enter Name in Transfer Portal

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan announced Monday will enter the NCAA's transfer portal.
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron told reporters Brennan approached him "teary-eyed" to say he would explore a future beyond Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
"He thought he just needed to find a place that he can go play for one year and start," Orgeron said. "He’s not going to play this year. He’s not ready. It was a tough decision. He and his family made it. I told him to hold his head high. He gave all he could to LSU. He graduated from LSU. I wish him the best."
Having been with the program for three seasons, Brennan was poised to play a key role for LSU in 2020 following Joe Burrow's departure. The former 4-star recruit from Mississippi opened by throwing for 1,112 yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions in three games.
Then Brennan suffered a torn muscle in his abdomen that ruled him out for the remainder of the year. He has yet to play in 2021 after breaking his left arm during a summer fishing trip.
Sophomore Max Johnson has performed well as LSU's starting quarterback (2,008 passing yards, 20 touchdowns, five interceptions), and the Tigers have a commitment from Walker Howard, the No. 4 quarterback in 247Sports' composite rankings for the 2022 class.
It's difficult to envision a road back to the No. 1 job for Brennan at LSU, so transferring to another school is his best bet to make the most of his one remaining year of eligibility.
The 6'4", 210-pound senior will presumably be able to land on his feet at another Power Five program.
Joe Burrow's success with the Tigers is evidence of how valuable getting a quarterback through a transfer can be. Jalen Hurts and Russell Wilson are two more examples of QBs who made a significant impact as stopgap options at Oklahoma and Wisconsin, respectively.
Finding the right fit could work wonders for Brennan in terms of improving his NFL draft stock.
Bo Nix, No. 18 Auburn Upset Matt Corral, No. 10 Ole Miss 31-20 in SEC Action
Oct 31, 2021
AUBURN, ALABAMA - OCTOBER 30: Running back Tank Bigsby #4 of the Auburn Tigers runs the ball by defensive back Otis Reese #3 of the Mississippi Rebels during the first quarter of play at Jordan-Hare Stadium on October 30, 2021 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Michael Chang/Getty Images)
The No. 18 Auburn Tigers never trailed en route to beating the visiting No. 10 Ole Miss Rebels 31-20 on Saturday from Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama.
Auburn running back Tank Bigsby paced the Tigers offense with 140 rushing yards and one touchdown, which led to a 13-3 first-quarter lead.
Tigers quarterback Bo Nix added a pair of rushing scores and found Jarquez Hunter for a nine-yard touchdown pass with 11 seconds left in the first half to help give Auburn a 28-17 halftime edge.
Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral accounted for 334 total yards (289 passing, 45 rushing) and added an 11-yard score on the ground, which cut the Auburn lead to 21-16.
The star signal-caller suffered an apparent left leg injury after avoiding a sack late in the first quarter. Rebels staff examined him in the medical tent before he was carted to the locker room.
He was out for roughly six minutes of game time spanning the first and second quarters but returned with 9:59 left in the first half.
The 6-2 Tigers (3-1 SEC) have won four of their last five. The 6-2 Rebels (3-2 SEC) saw their three-game win streak end.
Notable Performances
Ole Miss QB Matt Corral: 21-of-37, 289 passing yards, 1 INT; 10 carries, 45 rushing yards, 1 TD
Bigsby started the year with three straight 100-yard rushing performances, but he amassed just 183 yards on 55 carries (3.3 YPC) over his past four games leading into the Ole Miss matchup.
However, Bigsby got back on track with a dominant outing Saturday, grinding down the Rebels defense with tough running.
"I seen in his eyes that he was going to come out and ball. I knew he was going to turn up," Auburn linebacker Zakoby McClain said postgame.
Nix also praised Bigsby's efforts, per Jordan D. Hill of the Opelika-Auburn News:"Tank's that guy that, he's going to be consistent...I think the main thing with him is he got a lot of carries tonight...He just did a good job of being a one-cut runner tonight."
Bigsby did most of his work on the ground, but he took to the air on his one-yard run:
The second half wasn't as fruitful for the Auburn offense, but the Tigers were able to keep the ball for more than 33 minutes thanks largely to their quarterback and running back. The offensive line certainly had a good night as well, helping the Tigers amass 483 yards.
Overall, it was an impressive showing for the Auburn offense, whose 28-point first-half outburst ended up being enough for the win.
Fantastic Effort From Corral
Chase Parham of Rivals put it best on Saturday:
Matt Corral is down two offensive linemen, his three best wide receivers and a starting tight end. And doesn’t have an ankle. I don’t know who’s getting the trophy in a month but I know who the best and toughest SOB is.
Corral had a host of obstacles to overcome. In addition to his team's shorthanded offense (and his own left ankle injury), he was tasked with leading the Rebels into a hostile environment to face a hot Tigers team.
The Heisman Trophy candidate was also playing through a right ankle injury suffered against Tennessee on Oct. 16, making matters even more difficult.
All things considered, he was impressive considering the circumstances.
The injured ankles didn't stop Corral from rushing for his 11-yard touchdown to bring Ole Miss within one score in the second quarter:
The rest of the game didn't go so well for Corral and the Rebels, who managed just three second-half points in a matchup that devolved into a defensive slugfest.
However, Corral's resilience in the face of significant adversity is one of the night's clear takeaways, and ESPN's Molly McGrath gave him a huge compliment following his effort.
Ole Miss’ Matt Corral leads with so much intensity and heart. I have never covered a QB like him.
The night didn't end in victory for Ole Miss, but Corral and the Rebels can still stand tall after a strong effort.
What's Next?
Both teams will play Saturday.
Ole Miss will host Liberty in Oxford, Mississippi's Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Auburn will visit No. 14 Texas A&M at Kyle Field in College Station.
No. 1 Georgia Rides Defensive Effort to Beat Florida 34-7 in SEC Rout
Oct 30, 2021

The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party was a success for Georgia, as the nation's No. 1 team defeated Florida 34-7 at TIAA Bank Field on Saturday to remain undefeated.
Georgia won its first seven games on the strength of a defense allowing just 6.6 points per contest. Head coach Kirby Smart stuck with Stetson Bennett as his starting quarterback this week, even though JT Daniels was finally healthy after missing the past three games with a lat injury.
The Gators came into this game looking to get back on track. They lost two of their last three games, including a 49-42 defeat at LSU two weeks ago. Anthony Richardson and Emory Jones combined to throw four interceptions in that game.
After a scoreless first quarter when it looked like Florida was going to put up a fight, things changed dramatically in the second quarter. Georgia scored three touchdowns in less than three minutes of game time to take a 24-0 lead into halftime.
Nakobe Dean capped off the scoring barrage with a 50-yard touchdown when he picked off Richardson.
The Bulldogs defense was all over Florida's quarterback duo of Richardson and Jones. They recorded only 194 yards and two interceptions on 34 combined attempts.
Saturday was the first time since Georgia's season opener against Clemson that it looked potentially vulnerable. Bennett threw his first interception in five games late in the second quarter with the team clinging to a 3-0 lead.
Unlike the Clemson game, though, the Bulldogs figured things out thanks in part to some sloppy play by Florida. Rashad Torrence II, who picked off Bennett's pass in the end zone, tried to bring it out and was tackled at the two-yard line.
Florida head coach Dan Mullen ran Richardson on back-to-back plays. The second one gained eight yards, but Nolan Smith forced a fumble and recovered the ball at Florida's 11-yard line.
James Cook scored Georgia's first touchdown on the first play after the turnover. Smith got in on the action again on Florida's ensuing possession when he picked off Richardson.
Bennett found Kearis Jackson for a 36-yard score on the next play from scrimmage to extend the lead to 17-0. Florida did put together a decent drive after getting the ball back, but it ended with Dean's 50-yard pick-six.
Georgia's offense was mostly quiet for the rest of the game after that. Its longest drive of the second half took nine plays and 55 yards, ending with a field goal.
But the Bulldogs defense continued to do what it has done all season. The Gators only averaged 4.8 yards per play in the game.
Georgia's D is ree-diculous. They have studs all over that front seven. In 8 games, they've allowed a total of 16 points in the first half. That's insane how dominant they've been. That's as many points as their defense has scored over that stretch.
There might be a game this year when the defense does get caught on its heels, but the remaining schedule in the regular season certainly sets up well for Georgia to have an easy path to the SEC Championship game.
The Bulldogs don't play another team that currently has a winning record. If this was a statement game, they made it loud and clear to the rest of the country that the road to the College Football Playoff starts in Athens.
Florida's Flaws Stand Out in Loss
Mullen and his staff are going to spend a lot of time over the next week trying to find answers for what has gone wrong during their two-game losing skid.
The most glaring issue has been turnovers at the quarterback position. Richardson and Emory Jones have done a terrible job of protecting the football against LSU and Georgia. The Gators have a total of seven turnovers in those games.
They came into Saturday with 13 turnovers this season, tied with four other teams for most in the nation.
Even when the offense was able to move the ball against Georgia, those drives would end without points until the game was well in hand. The Gators had two possessions end in a turnover on downs. Jace Christmann missed two field-goal attempts.
It's especially unfortunate the offense came up short in this game because Florida's defense did a good job under difficult circumstances. The unit forced three turnovers of its own. Bennett threw as many interceptions today as he did in the previous six games combined (two).
Pro: Florida’s finally forcing turnovers!
Con: They are likely have nearly zero impact on the final outcome!
Mullen is stuck between a rock and a hard place with his quarterbacks right now. Richardson now has as many touchdown passes as interceptions (five) after throwing two picks Saturday.
Jones didn't throw a pick for just the second game this season, but he entered Saturday tied for third in the nation with nine interceptions.
Unless Richardson or Jones is able to step up his game, Florida is going to struggle to get over the .500 mark.
What's Next?
Georgia will return home to host Missouri at Sanford Stadium next Saturday. Florida will take on South Carolina at Williams-Brice Stadium on the same day.

Report: Georgia's Stetson Bennett to Start at QB vs. Florida over JT Daniels
Oct 29, 2021

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is sticking with the hot hand at quarterback for Saturday's SEC showdown against Florida.
Per Matt Zenitz of ON3.com, Stetson Bennett will remain under center even though JT Daniels is ready to return from a lat injury.
Daniels retained the starting job for the Bulldogs coming into this season after a strong finish in 2020. He started the final four games last year after Bennett suffered a shoulder injury against Florida.
The 21-year-old completed 76.1 percent of his attempts (54-of-71) for 567 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in three games this season. He missed Georgia's second game against UAB with an oblique injury.
Daniels was removed early in the second quarter of Georgia's 62-0 victory over Vanderbilt after the team got out to a huge lead. He finished 9-of-10 for 129 yards and two touchdowns in that game.
Bennett has been terrific this season. The Georgia native is 45-of-64 for 841 yards with 10 touchdowns and zero interceptions in four starts.
Each of Bennett's last three starts have come against opponents that were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 at the time of the game. Georgia defeated Arkansas, Auburn and Kentucky by a combined score of 101-23.
The top-ranked Bulldogs (7-0) have five games remaining in the regular season. They will play Saturday's game against Florida at TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville.
Tennessee Bans 16 Students, 9 Fans from Games for Throwing Trash vs. Ole Miss

The University of Tennessee banned 16 students from all athletic events through the spring sports season for throwing objects onto the field during a 31-26 loss to No. 10 Ole Miss on Oct. 16, school leaders announced Friday, per Becca Wright of the Knoxville News Sentinel.
Nine fans who aren't students were also banned.
The school was fined $250,000 for littering the field, Wright added.
Volunteers fans trashed the Neyland Stadium field after Ole Miss' game-clinching defensive stop with 54 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.
Tight end Jacob Warren was ruled a yard short of the first down on 4th-and-24, and the call stood after video review. Fans began throwing trash and debris after the call was announced.

Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin was hit with a golf ball, and play was stopped for more than 15 minutes as the debris had to be cleared off the field.
Volunteers athletic director Danny White sent an email to SEC commissioner Greg Sankey on Friday outlining ways the school plans to prevent similar incidents in the future, per Wright.
Changes that will be implemented for Tennessee's home game against Georgia on Nov. 13 include prohibiting student guest tickets, increasing police and security staff in the student section, adding enhanced metal detectors and adding more signs and announcements warning against misconduct.
Students will also be required to agree to the SEC and Tennessee fan codes of conduct. In addition, Tennessee is considering adding more video cameras, adding more game-day staff and reconfiguring how students enter the stadium to minimize lines.
Tennessee is 4-4 on the season and hasn't won a game since an Oct. 9 victory over South Carolina. The Volunteers have had several disappointing seasons in recent years and haven't had a winning season since 2019.
Ed Orgeron Says LSU Is Unable to Practice Because of Number of Injuries
Oct 28, 2021

LSU coach Ed Orgeron says the team does not have enough healthy players for a full practice.
"We don't have enough players to do the Tiger Bowl scrimmage tomorrow, and we don't have enough players healthy enough to have a full practice today," Orgeron told reporters Wednesday.
The 4-4 Tigers are off this week but have been riddled with injuries. They travel to No. 3-ranked Alabama next week and will be heavy underdogs—no matter their practice reps.
LSU has lost quarterback Myles Brennan, wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and cornerbacks Eli Ricks and Derek Stingley Jr., among other players, to injuries this season.
The result has been inconsistent on-field performance that led Orgeron and LSU to agree to part ways earlier this season.
Orgeron chose to coach the remainder of the 2021 season rather than leave the team midseason.
Nick Saban Says Alabama's Mistakes 'Need to Get Corrected' After Win vs. Tennessee
Oct 24, 2021

Despite No. 4 Alabama's 52-24 win over Tennessee on Saturday, Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban wasn't satisfied with his team's performance.
"We shot ourselves in the foot," Saban said after the game. "I think those things need to get corrected or they're going to cost us at some point."
Saban was referring to Alabama's busted coverages, a blocked punt or a penalty for roughing the kicker. Wide receiver Jameson Williams also had an early fumble in the red zone.
With the Crimson Tide headed for a bye week, Saban said his team has some things to work on during its time off. Saban is hoping his players are better prepared when they return on Nov. 6 against LSU.
"We have a real team we have to play in two weeks," Saban said. "We need to get some rest. We need to recover, but we also need to focus on what we need to do to finish the season and get some of these things corrected."
In their 15th straight win over the Volunteers, the Crimson Tide dominated the time of possession 40:26 to 19:34. Bryce Young threw for 371 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores. Brian Robinson rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns. Williams had a team-high 123 receiving yards, while John Metchie III had 11 receptions for 121 yards and two scores.
While Saban was critical about the team's performance early in the game, he acknowledged that the players did the most important thing and earned the win.
"I'm not going to be negative about the game," Saban said. "I'm not going to be negative about our team."
Matt Corral, No. 12 Ole Miss Rout LSU Behind Dominant Rushing Performance
Oct 23, 2021

The No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels are on a three-game winning streak following a 31-17 victory over the LSU Tigers at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Saturday.
Despite a slow start, quarterback Matt Corral was impressive in the Rebels victory, finishing with 209 total yards and two total touchdowns to help push Ole Miss to 6-1. The team hasn't lost since an Oct. 2 defeat at No. 4 Alabama. LSU is 4-4.
Notable Stats
Matt Corral, QB, OLE MISS: 18/23 for 185 YDS, 1 TD, 0 INT; 12 CAR for 24 YDS, 1 TD
Max Johnson, QB, LSU: 13/21 for 146 YDS, 0 TD, 1 INT; 6 CAR for -8 YDS, 0 TD
Snoop Conner, RB, OLE MISS: 14 CAR for 117 YDS, 0 TD
Tyrion Davis-Price, RB, LSU: 17 CAR for 53 YDS, 1 TD
Jerrion Ealy, RB, OLE MISS: 12 CAR for 97 YDS, 1 TD
Matt Corral, Ole Miss Offense Bounces Back After Slow Start
Corral and the Ole Miss offense got out to an incredibly slow start. The Rebels punted on their first two offensive possessions and could only muster a field goal on their third possession after Tysheem Johnson intercepted Max Johnson in the first quarter.
Corral didn't put up a touchdown until late in the second quarter when he hit tight end Casey Kelly for a two-yard score to help give the Rebels a 10-7 lead.
Things appeared to be much easier for Corral following his first touchdown of the day. After the Ole Miss defense got a stop on the Tigers, the Heisman Trophy favorite led the Rebels on a nine-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to close out the first half.
What. A. Drive.

Entering halftime, the Rebels held a 17-7 lead over the Tigers. Corral had completed 11-of-14 passes for 101 yards and a score. He also had a rushing touchdown.
Many took note of how Corral closed out the first half:
This @OleMissFB QB is the real deal-MATT CORRAL needs more national PR as is deserving of @HeismanTrophy mention. Earning praise from my ex partner @espn BRAD NESSLER on @CBSSports & also from Gary D former @BoilerFootball QB. Ole Miss up 17-7 - LaneKiffin has done great job .
The 22-year-old had a much better second half. He led the Rebels on a 10-play, 66-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession of the third quarter. Running back Henry Parrish Jr.'s 5-yard score helped put Ole Miss up 24-7.
Corral's solid play continued throughout the second half as he led the Rebels on another touchdown drive to really put things out of reach for the Tigers late in the third quarter.
Corral has arguably been the best quarterback in college football this season, so it's no surprise he was able to bounce back with an impressive second half against LSU.
We can't talk about Corral without bringing up how well Ole Miss played on the ground, though. The Rebels offense rushed for 266 yards and three touchdowns on 50 carries.
Success in the running game isn't new for Ole Miss, though. Entering this weekend, the Rebels were leading the SEC with 262.8 rushing yards per game.
Max Johnson Unable to Match Corral as Rebels Defense Stands Strong
Johnson entered halftime with just 97 yards and an interception on 8-of-14 passing. He led LSU to a score on the team's opening drive of the game but then threw a pick on the Tigers' second possession.
4th-and-goal. Max Johnson fires to the end zone and...
Things went from bad to worse for Johnson in the second half. After LSU was forced to punt on its opening drive, the Ole Miss defense forced a Johnson fumble on the Tigers' second possession of the third quarter.
The Rebels limited the Tigers offense to 326 total yards and two total touchdowns. They also forced three turnovers, while the Ole Miss offense had one.
Before Saturday's game, the Ole Miss defense had allowed 436 yards and 30.2 points per game, third-worst in the SEC.
The Tigers ended up taking Johnson out in the fourth quarter, replacing him with freshman Garrett Nussmeier, who had appeared in just two games before Saturday. Nussmeier completed 7-of-12 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown.
What's Next?
Ole Miss will be in action again next weekend at No. 19 Auburn, which was off this weekend after a 38-23 win at Arkansas on Oct. 16.
LSU will be off next weekend before going on the road to face the Crimson Tide at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Nov. 6.
Georgia QBs JT Daniels, Stetson Bennett Will Share Time for Rest of Season, Says HC
Oct 21, 2021
ATHENS, GA - OCTOBER 16: JT Daniels #18 of the Georgia Bulldogs warms up prior to the game against the Kentucky Wildcats at Sanford Stadium on October 16, 2021 in Athens, Georgia. (Photo by Todd Kirkland/Getty Images)
Georgia quarterbacks JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett will share time for the remainder of the 2021 season, provided the former is healthy, Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart said Thursday, according to ESPN's Chris Low.
Bennett has started Georgia's past three games as Daniels has been sidelined with a sprained lat muscle.
"I'm not sure we know who the better one is based on which game plan we have," Smart said. "There are teams we play that we have to be able to use the quarterback in the run game. Well, that's Stetson. There are teams we play that you have to get the ball out quickly and be really accurate. That's JT. But the first thing with JT is that he's got to be healthy."
Daniels' injury was revealed following Georgia's 62-0 win over Vanderbilt on Sept. 25. He also missed a Sept. 11 matchup against UAB with an oblique injury. The 21-year-old entered the 2021 season as Georgia's starting quarterback, but his injuries have allowed Bennett the opportunity to prove he can be QB1.
Bennett has been impressive this season, too. In six games (four starts), he has completed 69.5% of his passes for 996 yards and 11 touchdowns against two interceptions. He has also rushed for 148 yards.
Daniels, meanwhile, has completed 76.1% of his passes for 567 yards and five touchdowns against two interceptions in three games. Although Daniels is completing more of his passes, Bennett is averaging more yards per attempt at 12.1 compared to Daniels' 8.0.
If the Bulldogs deploy both quarterbacks through the remainder of the season, they could have a chance to become the first since Florida's 2006 national title-winning team to claim a championship while rotating signal-callers. The Gators used Chris Leak as their starter that season, but Tim Tebow also ended up playing a significant role in the offense.
Georgia is currently the top-ranked team in the nation with a 7-0 record, including wins over unranked Clemson, No. 15 Kentucky and No. 18 Auburn. The Bulldogs have a fairly easy record the rest of the way, too, with matchups against unranked opponents in their final five games of the regular season.
