As we head towards the end of another Bundesliga season, Borussia Dortmund find themselves in a familiar situation.

They are looking up at Bayern Munich, who are on course to win the German championship for the eighth season in a row. And as they consider what to do if they do indeed come up short again, there is an expectation that head coach Lucien Favre will lose his job.

The truth is, Dortmund still seem to be struggling to move on from the days of Jurgen Klopp. He left at the end of the 2014/15 season, but those exciting times, when they played heavy metal football and won league titles in 2011 and 2012, still hangs over everyone at Signal Iduna Park.

After a brief sabbatical, Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015, and he has since led the Reds to a Champions League title in 2019 and has them on the brink of winning the Premier League.

Yet the outward image of Dortmund today still feels built around what Klopp did back then, with the club trying to reimagine the brand of football he brought. The memories seem a burden on those who have come afterwards.

Bosses Thomas Tuchel, Peter Bosz and Peter Stoger have all been and gone, while current head coach Favre could soon be out of a job, according to SportBild (h/t BVB Buzz). The club could be on to their fifth boss in as many years very soon.

Abel Meszaros, a Bundesliga analyst for European sports channel Sport1 TV, tells Bleacher Report he believes in the theory that an obsession with Klopp is still lingering.

"I share the sentiment that Dortmund are in a state of Kloppophenia," Meszaros says. "After all, he was the ultimate embodiment of a Ruhrpott legend: charismatic enough to basically inspire a devout following from his players, yet understanding and caring enough on a human level to connect with them personally.

"In some ways, the perception of Klopp in Germany is both that of like a religious leader, a global brand and a down to earth guy, basically the total package.

"What made those years special is that he became champion as an outsider and changed the course of world football with his heavy metal football.

"He developed young players into superstars in the middle like Nuri Sahin and Ilkay Gundogan, turned versatile attacking midfielders into briefly world-class players like Shinji Kagawa and Mario Gotze, and his strikers—Marco Reus, Robert Lewandowski and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang—kept supplying goals.

"In addition, his revolutionary ideas on pressing and counter-pressing—the idea that you don't have to get back into defensive shape, and it's much better to actively try to win the ball, because it's less energy and you create chances—changed the world of football tactics.

"You no longer needed to have the best players in the world to try to compete with the likes of Bayern or Real Madrid."

When Klopp moved on, Tuchel seemed a good choice as his replacement.

He had learned his trade in the Bundesliga and earned a reputation at Mainz—where Klopp had also made his mark as a young boss—as one of the game's most tactically astute coaches.

But Tuchel lasted two seasons, and his replacement Bosz lasted just five months after a spell in which he failed to win any of the side's Champions League fixtures.

Stoger was next and managed to stabilize the club, before Favre was named in May 2018 as the next man to lead them forward.

Manuel Veth, a Bundesliga writer and Area Manager at Transfermarkt, says the club have had difficulties moving on from Klopp: "I think it has always been about finding the coach that can add to Klopp's tactical approach.

"In Thomas Tuchel, they perhaps thought they might even have found a similar character, but fundamentally, he is very different in his approach to Klopp.

"When it came to Peter Bosz, the attacking style of football was similar but defensively the two are not. Finally, Favre, he is a technocrat. Perhaps the best tactical coach on the planet—but he lacks Klopp's emotions.

"I think Dortmund always had to find some sort of compromise in their appointments, copying Klopp is impossible, so it was always about playing style rather than personality."

German expert Meszaros agrees: "I am sympathetic to the argument that Dortmund should try to distance itself from the 'let us find the next Klopp' argument. It is a bit like 'let's find the new Messi.' Essentially you might be chasing a mirage."

Favre is contracted to Dortmund until 2021, yet the managerial shortlist for a replacement seems to be shaping up behind the scenes, and B/R understands the options are pretty varied.

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is the dream appointment, although there will be concerns over his grasp of German and the sort of financial package he would be looking for.

An emerging option is American RB Salzburg coach Jesse Marsch, 46, who has already worked with Erling Haaland. He also has Bundesliga experience thanks to a brief spell as assistant manager at RB Leipzig, and he is considered one of the most courageous, exciting young bosses in the game.

Niko Kovac, who was sacked by Bayern Munich in November, is being linked but would be a hard sell to supporters. However, he was admired for his previous work at Frankfurt and did win silverware with both clubs.

Ajax's Erik Ten Hag has also caught attention with his brand of dominant football.

Bundesliga commentator Phil Bonney has seen enough chopping and changing in recent years to convince him that ditching the head coach again is not necessarily a good idea: "I guess the question I would throw back here is, who would do better than Favre?"

"Clubs don't seem to have much patience these days. In a parallel universe, Bayern lose their next two games and the title fight is back on. Favre becomes a BVB legend as Bayern only draw with Wolfsburg on the last day and Dortmund swipe the title from under Bayern's nose!"

For Dortmund fans, though, Favre's reign has been pretty frustrating.

"There are a number of reasons he is having to fight for his job", says Tushar from fan blog BVB Buzz.

"Favre has got a lot wrong during his time at Borussia Dortmund. His man-management hasn't been the best. Some players keep getting chances despite playing poorly.

"His record in big games has also generally been really poor. Aside from the wins over Inter Milan and PSG, Dortmund seem to struggle in big games more often than not. His tactics have also been too passive in a lot of the games against teams of lower calibre. Far too often, Dortmund start defending deep after taking the lead, allowing the opposition to get back into the game. He can also be very stubborn at times and is often too slow to react with his in-game tweaks and substitutions.

"But a case can also be made for him being unlucky. The Dortmund players have been very inconsistent, making easily avoidable errors. Players like Achraf Hakimi can go from world-class to error-prone in the space of a week.

"Injuries to key players before crucial games have also hurt Dortmund in each of the last two seasons. I can see why some fans are calling for Favre to go. He hasn't helped himself with some of the decisions he has made, but he has been unlucky, too.

"He has taken Dortmund from struggling to make top four to serious title contenders in a very short time, and deserves a lot of respect for that.

"If Favre is sacked, Michael Zorc and Hans Joachim Watzke will be under massive pressure to get their next appointment right."

So what does the next coach need to have?

"Dortmund need someone who is aggressive and takes a more proactive approach to matches," Tushar explains. "Favre gives the opposition too much space and time at times, and they need someone who can control the game better tactically. They also need someone who can get the best out of players, motivate them and get them to turn up for every game."

Bundesliga analyst Meszaros adds: "From the list of Favre replacements, I would very much be interested if they could pull the trigger on a guy like Jesse Marsch, who has a lot of the same attributes as Klopp.

"I think he would be a really good appointment—although I realise that it contradicts the 'getting over Kloppo' argument."

Yep. When all is said and done, it still sounds like Dortmund could do with finding the next Jurgen Klopp, doesn't it?

The Bundesliga returned to action Saturday amid the coronavirus pandemic with no fans in attendance, which made for a unique scene at Borussia Dortmund's Westfalenstadion.

After Dortmund recorded a dominant 4-0 victory over rivals Schalke 04, the players celebrated in front of the Yellow Wall, which is customary after they win at home.

The celebration had a decidedly different feel Saturday, though, since there were no fans present to cheer on their team:

Westfalenstadion has a capacity of over 80,000, and the Yellow Wall is an especially iconic part of the stadium, as the fans in that section can be an intimidating presence to the opposition.

The lack of fans didn't adversely affect Dortmund's performance, however, as they took a 2-0 lead into halftime thanks to goals from Erling Haaland and Raphael Guerreiro. Thorgan Hazard put them up 3-0 early in the second half, and Guerreiro finished the scoring with his second goal in the 63rd minute.

Dortmund closed the gap on leaders Bayern Munich with the win, now trailing by just one point, although Bayern are scheduled to face Union Berlin on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Schalke sit all the way down in eighth with 37 points, though sixth-place Wolfsburg are only two points ahead of them.

Salzburg's Jesse Marsch: Erling Haaland in Football's 'Upper Echelon of Talents'

Red Bull Salzburg manager Jesse Marsch has hailed Borussia Dortmund starlet Erling Haaland as already being one of the top talents in world football.

Marsch managed the 19-year-old before he moved to BVB in January. The coach told the Planet Futbol Podcast (h/t Goal's Sean Wilson):

"He's a special personality. He's clearly an incredible talent. I mean, his athleticism, his speed, it right away puts him in the upper echelon of talents in our sport.

"And then you add his desire to be successful, his mentality every day, the way he works at his technical ability, the way he works at his finishing every day, how much he puts into trying to be the best footballer he can possibly be every day."

Marsch said the striker is "dealing with a little bit of fame" and pointed to Paris Saint-Germain's mocking of him after they knocked Dortmund out of the UEFA Champions League earlier in March:

"So he'll have his challenges, and he's only 19 years old, and he's going to make mistakes," he added. "But in the end, his desire to be the best is different than anything I've ever seen."

Haaland exploded on to the scene at Salzburg this season as he racked up an astonishing 28 goals and seven assists in 22 matches during the first half of the campaign.

That included eight goals in the Champions League group stage against Liverpool, Napoli and Genk.

The youngster not only possesses great pace, he also has the physicality to compete with defenders for the ball, too.

He hasn't slowed down since making the step up from the Austrian Bundesliga to the German Bundesliga, either:

Haaland has nine goals in eight league games for Dortmund, and his efforts were recognised in February:

The teenager also scored in his solitary DFB-Pokal appearance, and he netted a brace against PSG in the first leg of their last-16 tie (U.S. and UK only, respectively):

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1229881099452657671
https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1229903419625787392

In total, he has scored 40 goals in 33 matches this season for Salzburg and Dortmund, as well as producing nine assists.

He has spent 2,200 minutes on the pitch, so that's a goal every 55 minutes on average. Including his assists, he's had a direct hand in a goal every 45 minutes he's played.

He'll play a key role in Dortmund's Bundesliga title push during the run-in, provided the season resumes from its hiatus amid the outbreak of COVID-19.

The Bundesliga has been suspended until at least April 2, but UEFA has committed to finishing the season by June 30.

Bayern Munich are four points clear of Dortmund with nine matches left to play, one of which is a trip for the Bavarians to BVB's Westfalenstadion.

Hans-Joachim Watzke Says Borussia Dortmund Would 'Discuss' Jadon Sancho Exit

Borussia Dortmund wouldn't block Jadon Sancho's path if the gifted forward wanted to leave, according to club CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.

He addressed Sancho's future during an interview with RMC Sport (h/t Get French Football News):

"Jadon is a great, great talent, maybe the greatest talent in Europe currently of players under the age of 21. In my opinion, he has the potential to become one of the two or three best players in the world in the years to come. We are going to do our best to hold on to him for as long as possible. We have a very good relationship with him. But if one day he comes to us and says that he wants to leave the club, then we'll discuss it. But that is not our primary option. The primary option is to keep him for as long as possible."

Sancho moving would rob Dortmund of arguably the team's most talented presence in the final third. Yet there is no doubt the 19-year-old will continue to attract attention from clubs across Europe thanks to his stellar performances.

He has excelled since swapping life in the Manchester City academy for the Bundesliga in 2017. The teenager was acquired for a mere £8 million, a true bargain that once again underlined the astute nature and effectiveness of Dortmund's recruitment practices.

Sancho's form this season has translated into 17 goals and as many assists to help Dortmund to second domestically and into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The numbers are the result of natural flair, close control, skill and a coolness in front of goal that belie Sancho's years.

Sancho has firmly established himself as the key man in a Dortmund forward line also populated by other match-winners, including striker Erling Haaland. Thorgan Hazard and Julian Brandt provide artistry from wide areas, while Marco Reus remains a talisman when fit.

Even so, it's Sancho who is being linked with the big-money moves this summer. Premier League giants are reportedly ready to come calling, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool all in the frame, according to TalkSport's Billy Hawkins.

Sancho would be an asset for any member of the trio, while Dortmund would get to make a significant profit on their original investment. Bild (h/t MailOnline's James Gantreported the England international's price tag would be upwards of £120 million.

Stumping up the fee won't be the only challenge facing keen suitors, though. Interested clubs would also have to meet personal terms believed to be in excess of £200,000 per week, according to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph.

The cost of a deal may seem prohibitive, but few young players are proving themselves at the top level of European competition as well as Sancho. Dortmund's model relies on developing stars and cashing in, so any club ready to meet these demands will likely be able to tempt Sancho into accelerating the next step in his career development.

Hans-Joachim Watzke: 'Pressure Will Not Be On' Dortmund in PSG UCL Clash

Borussia Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke believes the pressure is on Paris Saint-Germain to progress from the UEFA Champions League last-16 showdown between the two teams, despite the Bundesliga side taking an advantage into the second leg.

The two teams will go head-to-head again on Wednesday in Paris, with Erling Haaland's brace in the first leg giving BVB a 2-1 lead at the halfway point in the tie. Neymar equalised for PSG on the night, meaning Thomas Tuchel's team at least have an away goal to show for their efforts.

Speaking ahead of the match, Watzke said he thinks Dortmund can approach the game with more freedom than their opponents, for whom expectations are much higher in the Champions League, per Footissime on RMC Sport (h/t Get French Football News):

"It is clear, PSG have much bigger financial means that Borussia Dortmund. I should have perhaps said that the state of Qatar has more means than Borussia Dortmund. And I know that their biggest dream is to win the Champions League.

"For us, it would be super to get into the quarter-finals, but we do not have the same level of pressure as PSG. … The pressure will not be on our shoulders, but instead on PSG's shoulders. They have incredible attacking power, with five world-class players. That is why this tie still sits at 50-50."

It's been confirmed PSG will not have their raucous home crowd backing them on Wednesday, with the match set to be played behind closed doors because of the spread of the coronavirus.

Get French Football News provided more details on who will be in attendance inside and outside the Parc des Princes:

The first leg was a memorable one between two attack-minded sides; amid a galaxy of goalscoring stars on the pitch at the Westfalenstadion, it was 19-year-old Haaland who seized the headlines:

Overall, Dortmund deserved the advantage, as they were the stronger team on the night. In addition to the predatory instincts of Haaland, the speed of Jadon Sancho and the vertical raids of Achraf Hakimi caused big issues for the Ligue 1 team.

The onus will now be on PSG to respond on home soil. What will concern supporters is the team have frozen at this stage of the Champions League in recent years, suffering exits at the hands of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Typically, these types of encounters are tense affairs, although both PSG and Dortmund are at their best when they attack. Should the match become an end-to-end tussle, the home side should be confident the firepower they have can swing the tie their way.

Erling Haaland Hails 'Extraordinary' Kylian Mbappe, Talks PSG UCL Performance

Erling Haaland has said he "could have been much better" in the first leg of Borussia Dortmund's UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain despite scoring both the German club's goals in the 2-1 win on February 18.

The return leg takes place at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. BVB go into the match on a run of five consecutive wins in all competitions.

Haaland has scored four goals in that time to take his tally for Dortmund to 12 goals in just 10 appearances since joining the club in January from Red Bull Salzburg.

The 19-year-old is not getting carried away with his remarkable form, though.

Despite playing a key role in giving Dortmund a potentially crucial lead against PSG, he believes he could have done better in the first leg, and he was full of praise for the French club's star man, Kylian Mbappe, per France Football (h/t Goal):

"Yes, OK, I scored two goals, but I also made a lot of mistakes during this match. So let's say it could have been much better than that.

"[Mbappe] is a fantastic player. It was the first time I played against him in the first leg. He has so much talent, and even more. He is an extraordinary player. Everything he did at his age and when you look at his record, it's completely crazy. He's a great player."

Dortmund last reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2016-17, when they were knocked out by Monaco.

In that same campaign, PSG suffered a humiliating last-16 exit to Barcelona despite having won the first leg 4-0.

They have also fallen at the first knockout round in Europe's elite competition in the two seasons since and are in danger of underachieving again after an underwhelming performance in the first leg against Dortmund:

PSG's poor recent record in the Champions League is likely to prey on their minds on Wednesday, and that should play to Dortmund's advantage, especially if they can score the first goal.

The fixture is set to be played behind closed doors due to fear over the spread of the coronavirus:

As a result, PSG will be robbed of home support, but it will also prevent any negativity spilling from the stands should the hosts not start well.

La Liga Would Be 'A Very Good League' for Erling Haaland, Says Father

Alf-Inge Haaland, the father of Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, has said La Liga would be a "very good league" for the striker in the future.

The young forward has enjoyed a remarkable 2019-20 season, shining for Red Bull Salzburg and then moving to Dortmund in January, where he has continued his blistering goalscoring form.

Speaking about his son's progress to AS, the former Manchester City and Leeds United midfielder said he's happy to see him performing well at Dortmund and discussed the competitions he thinks are best suited to the 19-year-old's skill set (h/t Rich Jones of the Daily Star):

"I am very happy for him and Borussia Dortmund, although for me the most important thing is to keep growing as before.

"Dortmund told us that they needed someone like him and that the goal is as high as possible. He is [at] a team that fights for the Bundesliga and is growing in European competitions. It is perfect to continue training.

"We were linked to more than 100 teams, but it is true that the Spanish is a very good league for my son, with great teams. You never know if he will play in Spain. What has to happen, will happen."

Manchester United were strongly linked with a move for Haaland in January, but he opted to join Dortmund.

Goal also mentioned Real Madrid as suitors for the Norwegian. Haaland's Sr. was asked about the forward's relationship with compatriot Martin Odegaard, who is on loan at Real Sociedad from Madrid.

"My son loves to play with Martin; he is a great footballer," he said. "They understand each other very well on the pitch."

Per Bleacher Report's Dean Jones, the German club is developing a reputation for bringing in some of the best young players in the game:

Having excelled with Salzburg in the Austrian top flight, with 16 goals in 14 games this season, Haaland has had no issue adapting to German football. He's made four starts and three substitute appearances in the Bundesliga, scoring nine goals.

It's in the UEFA Champions League where he has made a his mark, though, with 10 goals in the competition already this term. The most recent two came in a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain, with this stunning long-range strike proving to be the winner:

In all competitions, the forward has already amassed an amazing total for the 2019-20 season, outgunning some of Europe's biggest names in the process:

Should he continue to score at such a remarkable rate, Haaland will continue to be linked with some of the biggest clubs around.

While he has already reportedly interested a Premier League giant in Manchester United, it would be no surprise if some of Spain's biggest outfits were looking closely at him too.

However, his father is pleased with his son's situation at Dortmund, and it's difficult to see the youngster moving anywhere in the short term as a result.

Borussia Dortmund Reportedly Set to Beat Manchester United to Jude Bellingham

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly set to beat Manchester United to the signature of Birmingham City youngster Jude Bellingham.

According to ESPN's Stephan Uersfeld, the 16-year-old has long been a source of interest for the Bundesliga outfit, whose training facilities he recently made a visit to, and he has also been linked with the likes of United and Bayern Munich.

Sport Bild (h/t Bundesliga writer Manuel Veth) reported details of his proposed move to BVB:

Dortmund's current record signing is Mats Hummels, whom they re-signed from Bayern last summer for a reported €30.5 million (£26.7 million).

According to Uersfeld, Dortmund are likely to sign him in a similar manner to the way they landed Jadon Sancho from Manchester City in 2018, when they are believed to have paid a training compensation fee of €7 million (£6.1 million).

Uersfeld added that while compensation for Bellingham is likely to exceed the payment for Sancho, it won't be as high as €35 million (£30.6 million).

Constantin Eckner of football analytics company Spielverlagerung believes he'd still be worth it if it was:

Wednesday's FA Cup clash with Leicester City would have provided a good opportunity to see how he fared against Premier League opposition, but manager Pep Clotet is set to rest him, per TalkSport's Tom Ross:

Clotet is a huge admirer of his young charge, though. Clotet said in October: "He can go forward as well, he can defend, he is very complete and despite being only 16 he handles the physicality of the midfield very well."

The teenager has split his time this season between both flanks and central midfield, scoring four goals and assisting three in 34 games in all competitions.

He's made 31 of those appearances in the Championship, starting 24 of them.

Per WhoScored.com, he has won 72 of the 100 tackles he's attempted and made 31 blocks and 21 interceptions. He has also created 20 chances and completed 32 successful dribbles.

Erling Haaland Says It's 'Always Nice' to Be Wanted, Talks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has said it is flattering for other clubs to be interested in him.

The 19-year-old also praised Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the impact he has had on his career.

Speaking to FourFourTwo (h/t Goal's Chris Burton), Haaland was asked about the interest shown in him by United and Real Madrid.

"It's always nice when clubs are interested," he said. "It means you've done something right."

Haaland scored 20 goals in 50 games while playing under Solskjaer at Molde in their native Norway before the coach left to replace Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford in December 2018.

"I arrived at Molde as a young kid, and he helped me a lot," Haaland said. "He was a good finisher and helped me with striking skills and different finishing methods. He's been important in my career."

The teenager also revealed his admiration for Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic:

Ibrahimovic, 38, has scored 459 goals in 750 games at club level since he left Malmo as a youngster in 2001, having played for Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and L.A. Galaxy.

Despite his age, Haaland is already at his fourth club. He joined Molde in 2017 from his hometown club Bryne, and he left Molde for Red Bull Salzburg in January last year.

A sensational record of 29 goals and seven assists in 27 matches for Salzburg caught the attention of the rest of Europe, and he was snapped up by Dortmund in January.

He's enjoyed an incredible start with BVB, notching 12 goals in nine games to take his overall tally to 40 in all competitions for the season in just 31 games. He's averaged a goal every 51 minutes he's played this season and also laid on eight assists along the way.

Haaland has plundered 10 goals in the UEFA Champions League, including this superb effort for Dortmund as part of a brace he scored against PSG in the first leg of their last-16 tie (U.S., UK only respectively):

His rise has been so incredible that he wouldn't look out of place at Old Trafford or the Santiago Bernabeu.

United signed Odion Ighalo on loan in January after an injury to Marcus Rashford left them with Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood as their only forward options for the immediate future. The Red Devils have failed to find the net 12 times in all competitions this season, so they could have benefited enormously from recruiting a player as prolific as Haaland has been.

As for Real, the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus in 2018 can still be felt. Ronaldo scored 450 goals in nine years at Madrid, an average of exactly 50 per season.

Dortmund signed Haaland by meeting his €22.5 million (£19.6 million) release clause, but his value will have rocketed for any suitors hoping to lure him away from Germany in the coming years.

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has said star winger Jadon Sancho is "very happy" at the club, and he doesn't think he wants to leave.

Sancho has been widely linked with a transfer this summer, but Watzke told BBC Sport an exit is not a foregone conclusion: "I think he has the feeling that the club does have a good future. In my opinion, I don't think he wants to leave. We have a very confidential relationship between us and him and his agents. We will discuss it."

According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, Manchester United lead the race to land Sancho in the summer. The report stated he'll be allowed to leave and would cost the Red Devils more than the £89.3 million they spent on Paul Pogba.

Watzke said money is not a factor in their decision to keep or sell the youngster, however: "It's not a question of money. For us, it would be the best position if he stays at Borussia Dortmund. We have enough money. We want to have titles. I think this team has a lot more potential with Jadon than without Jadon."

The 19-year-old former Manchester City prospect moved to Germany in 2017 and steadily established himself as a rising star in the Bundesliga. He broke out in 2018 and has continued to put up impressive numbers:

Already a full England international, Sancho has limitless potential and looks like a future superstar. He's under contract until 2022.

Dortmund have built a tremendous reputation for nurturing young talent and selling them on for a profit, parting with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Ousmane Dembele in recent years. They're currently in a tight race for the Bundesliga title, trailing leaders Bayern Munich by four points.

Chelsea and Liverpool have also been mentioned as possible summer destinations for Sancho should he leave Germany.
