Tiger Woods Was Offered LIV Golf Contract in $700M-$800M Range, Greg Norman Says

Tiger Woods has said in the past that he has no intentions of jumping from the PGA Tour to the LIV Golf Invitational Series, but he's apparently sacrificing an eye-popping payday.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman said to Tucker Carlson that the upstart tour offered Woods a deal in the range of $700-$800 million to jump ship.

Norman had said in June that the offer made to Woods was "mind-blowingly enormous," adding, "we're talking about high nine digits." Now, the actual range has been revealed.

LIV Golf is backed financially by the Saudi Arabian government, which has faced scrutiny for its history of human rights violations and been accused of sportswashing. While many notable golfers have joined the tour because of the monetary gain, Woods has not been tempted.

"Well, he certainly doesn't need the money. Legacy is a big deal to Tiger," New York Post reporter Mark Cannizzaro told Pro Football Talk's Peter King recently. "Tiger is a big golf nerd. He is heavily aligned with the PGA Tour. He's not going to cross the PGA."

While speaking to reporters last month at the 150th Open Championship, Woods made it clear that he is loyal to the PGA Tour and has no interest in joining LIV.

"The players who have chosen to go to LIV and play there, I disagree with it," Woods said. "I think that what they've done is they've turned their back on what has allowed them to get to this position."

Woods also took a shot at Norman for forming the breakaway tour, saying, "I know Greg tried to do this back in the early '90s. It didn't work then, and he's trying to make it work now. I still don't see how that's in the best interests of the game."

Henrik Stenson cruised to victory in the LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster, shooting a two-under 69 in Sunday's final round to finish the three-day tournament at 11 under.

Playing in his first LIV Golf event, Stenson took home $4 million for the win and earned another $375,000 after his team's second-place finish.

Stenson entered the day holding a three-stroke lead for first place and didn't face any danger of being overtaken atop the leaderboard.

Matthew Wolff made a charge with a seven-under 64 in the final round, but he finished tied for second with Dustin Johnson with an overall score of nine under. Carlos Ortiz placed fourth at eight under, followed by Patrick Reed in fifth at seven under.

Phil Mickelson had his best round of the tournament with an even-par 71, but he finished at six over to place 35th.

Stenson set the tone from the very first hole Sunday by sinking a birdie to extend his lead. He avoided any early mistakes, recording birdies on the fifth and 14th holes. His clean round came to an end with a bogey on the 15th hole, but he made par on his final three holes to secure the win.

Stenson last tasted victory on the PGA Tour at the Wyndham Championship in 2017, so Sunday's win was a long time coming for the 46-year-old. He didn't receive as much fanfare as the other golfers who jumped from the PGA Tour to join LIV, but he will surely garner more attention going forward after a dominant performance at Bedminster.

After entering Sunday outside of the top 10, Wolff enjoyed the best round of the day, which was highlighted by an eagle on the 10th hole. He also recorded five birdies with no bogeys to move into the top three.

Johnson had a strong day, but he opened the round with a bogey on the first hole. He recovered by notching four birdies, including one on the 18th hole to move into a tie for second.

Mickelson's round was defined by inconsistency. He also recorded a bogey on the first hole, but he appeared to bounce back with birdies on the fourth, eighth and 11th holes. However, he reverted back to his lackluster play with bogeys on holes 14 and 17.

In three LIV Golf events, Mickelson has not finished inside the top 30. He is the highest-earning golfer of 2022, but his play has not lived up to his pay so far.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series will return to action Sept. 2 from The Oaks Course at The International in Boston.

Dustin Johnson Finishes Tied for 2nd at 2022 LIV Bedminster After Solid Final Round

Dustin Johnson will have to wait until at least September to collect his first individual title in the LIV Golf International Series.

Johnson shot three under in the final round to finish at nine under and tied for second with Matthew Wolff. The 38-year-old did come out victorious in the team portion of the tournament as 4 Aces GC cruised to victory.

Through two rounds, Johnson was in second place at six under but still had his work cut out for him. Henrik Stenson was alone atop the leaderboard at nine under.

It didn't take long for the gulf between the two to widen. Johnson bogeyed the opening hole, while Stenson birdied No. 1. That made the road back for the two-time major champion even tougher, and he couldn't mount much of a challenge the rest of the way.

Birdies on Nos. 6 and 8 did little to improve Johnson's overall position on the front nine. He narrowly missed an eagle on the sixth hole, which could've changed the complexion of his round.

Another birdie for Johnson followed on No. 11, and Stenson answered with a birdie of his own on No. 14. Stenson's bogey on the 15th hole came too late to alter the outcome.

A stretch of six straight pars on the back nine by Johnson opened the door for Matthew Wolff to overtake him for second place. Wolff surged up the standings thanks to his seven-under 64.

Birdieing No. 18 meant Johnson ended Sunday exactly where he began it.

The International in Bolton, Massachusetts, is the next stop for LIV Golf. The fourth event of the 2022 season will tee off on Sept. 2.

LIV's Graeme McDowell Says 'Haters Are Gonna Hate,' Calls Critics 'Keyboard Warriors'

Graeme McDowell has faced criticism for joining LIV Golf and is doing his best to rise above it.

"Haters are gonna hate. Keyboard warriors are always going to be there and that is what it is," McDowell said, per Adam Woodard of Golfweek. "I'm not used to it. And like I said, I haven't done a good job staying away from it."

The 2010 U.S. Open champion is one of several high-profile golfers to join LIV Golf, a new organization funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund. It has led to significant blowback, with even McDowell saying his legacy was "tainted" in the short term.

The 42-year-old hasn't always taken it well, calling out "idiotic comments" on his Twitter page while also challenging someone a round on their home course.

McDowell believes he and the other golfers to join LIV Golf have to band together against the criticism.

"We're kind of brothers in arms, if you like, because of the negativity that's come out against us all," the Northern Irishman said. "Everyone's experienced that in their own way, and it brings us all closer together."

After starting the day in a tie for first place, Henrik Stenson moved into sole possession of the lead with 18 holes left to play at the LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster.

Stenson and Patrick Reed were co-leaders with matching scores of seven-under par following Friday's opening round. The Iceman shot a 69 on Saturday to move to nine-under par overall.

Dustin Johnson is alone in second place at six-under par with a 69 in the second round. Four players, including Reed, are tied for third and one shot behind Johnson.

Phil Mickelson did improve on his opening-round 75 with a two-over par 73 on Saturday, but he's in a four-way tie for 40th place at six over for the tournament.

Stenson got off to a rough start Saturday. He hit a double-bogey on the par-four third hole that dropped him to five-under and in a three-way tie for second place.

Things would stay that way for Stenson until he got on the seventh hole. The 2016 British Open champion made a long eagle putt that moved him into a tie for the lead with Reed.

Reed missed some opportunities early in the round that came back to bite him later. He missed a one foot par putt on No. 4 and settled for bogey that moved him to six under.

On the back nine, Reed made back-to-back bogeys on No. 11 and 12 that dropped him three shots off the pace being set by Stenson. The Swedish star at one point was four shots clear of the field when he made consecutive birdies on holes 10 and 11.

A bogey by Stenson on the 18th hole brought his lead back down to three.

Johnson had some blunders in his round, but finished strong to keep within striking distance of Stenson going into Sunday. He missed a makeable par putt on No. 15 that dropped him three shots off the pace at five under.

The 18th hole saw Johnson get that stroke back with his final birdie of the round. The two-time PGA Tour major champion did have the distinction of being the first player in LIV Golf history to lose a tournament when leading after the second round. (He and Carlos Ortiz were tied for the top spot through 36 holes in Portland, but Branden Grace passed both in the final round.)

Johnson has a chance to become the second player in LIV history to come from behind and win. He's in prime position to win the team event as the captain of 4 Aces GC.

The quartet of Johnson, Gooch, Reed and Pat Perez are 20-under par. Majesticks GC (Stenson, Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield) are a distant second with a score of 14-under par. No other team is better than seven under through 36 holes.

Talor Gooch had the round of the day to put himself in contention heading into Sunday. The 30-year-old finds himself in a tie for third place at five under after carding a 64 in the second round.

Gooch was part of a seven-way tie for 36th place at the end of the opening round. He is chasing his first victory in a tournament since November when he won the RSM Classic on the PGA Tour.

The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Day 2 of LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster took place at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey, and Dustin Johnson is in the mix for the individual and team crowns.

The two-time major champion sits second at six under after shooting a two-under 69 on Saturday. Tournament leader Henrik Stenson leads the field at nine under.

Johnson's shotgun start landed him on the second hole to begin the second round of the three-day tournament, which concludes Sunday. He notched birdies on the fourth and sixth holes before dropping a stroke on the par-three seventh.

DJ later took advantage of the par-five holes on the back nine, registering birdies on Nos. 15 and 18. Johnson posted a bogey on the 16th, but he finished his last (No. 1) with a par to cruise into solo second.

Johnson captains 4 Aces GC, and that crew leads the team competition after posting 20 under through two rounds. Majesticks GC, which is captained by Lee Westwood and paced by Stenson this week, sits second at 15 under.

The quartet of DJ, Patrick Reed, Talor Gooch and Pat Perez is looking for its second straight team competition win after taking down LIV Golf Invitational Portland last time out.

Johnson started the day tied for fourth at four under. 4 Aces GC led after Day 1 at 11 under thanks to Reed, who ended Friday tied for the tournament lead with Stenson at seven under.

Gooch's seven-under 64 served as the Aces' top score Saturday, while Johnson did second-best on the team. Reed and Gooch are tied for third at five under alongside Turk Pettit and Carlos Ortiz.

The third and final day will begin Sunday at 1:15 p.m. ET with a shotgun start. Johnson will be looking for his first LIV individual crown after taking solo eighth in London (one under) and a tie for third in Portland with Reed at nine under.

Patrick Reed and Henrik Stenson each shot a seven-under 64 to take a two-stroke co-lead after Day 1 of the LIV Golf Invitational Bedminster at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Reed made birdies on the fourth through sixth holes and closed with this birdie on his last (the 17th).

The 2018 Masters champion's short game was on-point all day, like when he executed this chip on the par-five 15th to give himself a short birdie putt to move to six under.

Reed is playing for 4 Aces GC this week, and his team is in the lead after one day with an 11-under score. Twelve teams of four golfers apiece are competing, and team scoring is based on the top two results per quartet.

4 Aces GC team captain Dustin Johnson is tied for fourth at four under. He had to play a ball off a cart path, but that was no problem for the two-time major winner.

As for Stenson, he's into Round 2 at seven under after notching birdies on three of his last five holes, including one on No. 15 to close out his outing.

The putter was good to Stenson all day, and it worked here on No. 11 to move into a tie with Reed at five under at the time:

Stenson's team, Majesticks GC, is second on the leaderboard at 10 under thanks also to Ian Poulter (-3, T6).

Phachara Khongwatmai is solo third at five under thanks to this lengthy putt. He had six birdies and one bogey on the day.

Shots of the day include eagles from Brooks Koepka and Abraham Ancer:

Round 2 of the three-day tournament will begin with a shotgun start on Saturday at 1:15 p.m. ET.

Dustin Johnson delivered a solid performance during the first round of competition in the LIV Golf Invitational Series at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster, but he sits just outside the top three on the leaderboard.

Johnson sits tied for fourth with Carlos Ortiz after finishing Round 1 four under par. He said after Friday's first round that he was happy with his performance.

Johnson carded three birdies and two bogeys on the front nine, struggling on the fifth and seventh holes. He sat one-under par through nine holes, and had a much better performance on the back nine, adding three more birdies to close out Friday's action.

This is Johnson's third event in the LIV Golf Invitational Series. He finished tied for seventh in LIV Golf's inaugural event at Centurion Golf Club in London and tied for third place at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in Portland.

Johnson left the PGA Tour for LIV Golf after receiving a deal worth around $125 million, according to James Corrigan and Tom Morgan of the Telegraph (h/t Ryan Glasspiegel of the New York Post).

That money is in addition to any money he wins throughout the invitational series. The winner of each even receives $4 million.

Johnson will look to capture hold of the lead in Bedminster when he tees off again on Saturday. Henrik Stenson and Patrick Reed currently share the lead at seven-under par, while Phachara Khongwatmai is in second at five-under.

2-Time Masters Champion Bubba Watson Reportedly Leaving PGA Tour for LIV Golf

Bubba Watson will reportedly leave the PGA Tour for the LIV Golf Invitational Series and make his debut at the Saudi Arabia-backed upstart league's Labor Day Weekend event outside Boston, per James Corrigan of The Telegraph.

Golf Digest confirmed the move. Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated, who also reported on Watson's eventual departure, wrote that the switch is expected to be announced during LIV's event at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey. That three-day event will take place Friday through Sunday.

The two-time Masters champion has been out since May with a torn meniscus. He will reportedly captain one of the LIV Golf teams during the Labor Day Weekend tournament, which is scheduled to be held at The International in Bolton, Massachusetts. However, he is not expected to play because of the injury, per Harig.

Many big names have already defected for LIV Golf, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia.

Watson is reportedly the latest player to leave the PGA Tour, and he explained why he was interested in potentially leaving even though it's backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Saudi Arabia's human rights violations have been well-publicized, to the point where Amnesty International wrote that the kingdom had an "appalling human rights record."

"They’re trying to change," Watson said, per Harig.

"They started with women's golf, started supporting the women's golf (through a series of events on the Ladies European Tour) and then they started supporting men's golf. There's women's tournaments already that they sponsor. Trying to grow the game. They're trying to change industry over there, bring golf, bring tourism to Saudi Arabia with the beautiful beaches that they already have."

As noted by Tom Schad of USA Today and others, the government has been accused of sportswashing, using the new league to help repair its image around the world.

Per Harig, when Watson spoke, it was unknown what the PGA Tour would do to players who wanted to participate in LIV Golf events. It turns out that players will have to choose between one or the other.

"It will be interesting to go over there and play, but also see the beauty of other parts of the world that God's created," Watson said.

"I can't wait to get over there. Hopefully the tour lets us go. Again, the charity dollars is what's most important, so the more money I can get in my hands, the more I can give away. So it's an honor and a privilege if they let me go over there and play."

LIV Golf has plenty of money to burn. Of note, the Public Investment Fund poured in $2 billion to LIV Golf in May.

LIV announced that it will expand to 14 tournaments in 2023 with $405 million in prize money. In addition, per Corrigan, Watson reportedly will earn over £40 million (roughly $48.6 million) for the move.

In sum, LIV Golf is continuing to chip away at the PGA Tour's roster of talent. At the moment, though, none of the Official World Golf Ranking's top 16 players are in LIV. Johnson (at No. 17 currently) had the highest ranking this year at No. 2 to begin 2022.

LIV Golf is expanding its schedule and increasing its prize money for the 2023 season.

The circuit announced on Wednesday (via ESPN's Mark Schlabach) it will play 14 tournaments with a total prize purse of $405 million next year.

This season, the first year for the controversial golf league, the schedule consists of eight tournaments with a total purse of $255 million.

In May, after receiving an additional $2 billion in funding from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf announced plans to play 10 tournaments in 2023 and launch a full super league in 2024.

"LIV Golf's expanding global platform will add a new dimension to the golf ecosystem as we know it, one that provides an opportunity for players and fans around the world to help maximize our beloved sport's true potential," LIV CEO and commissioner Greg Norman said in a statement with Wednesday's announcement.

Dates and locations for the 14 events on the 2023 schedule have not yet been announced. Schlabach did note the organization's release said its events won't conflict with the four major tournaments, international team events or heritage tournaments.

The announcement comes on the eve of LIV golf's third tournament of the season. It will be held at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey.

The LIV circuit has generated controversy because it is funded by the Saudi Arabian government. The Saudi government has been accused of trying to improve its reputation around the world by sportswashing away its history of human rights violations.

LIV Golf has signed several notable names away from the PGA Tour, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia.

PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced in June that all current and future golfers who take part in the LIV series will be indefinitely suspended by the PGA.

The LIV Golf Invitational Series consists of a team and individual event that take place concurrently. Each event features a field of 48 players with the player who has the lowest score after 54 holes being declared the winner.

There are also 12 teams of four players, with the two best scores in the group being used to decide where they rank after the first two rounds. The final round uses the top three scores in the group.
