Derek Jeter Says Carlos Correa's Remarks on Gold Gloves Isn't Worth a Comment

Former New York Yankees shortstop and current Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter refrained from providing any extensive remarks after free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa said that the Hall of Famer didn't deserve any of his Gold Glove Awards.
"I didn't think much about it. I don't know how my name came up. My Spanish is not that good. I still haven't seen it. I don't know how my name was brought up, but it doesn't even warrant a response," Jeter told Craig Mish of Sports Grid on Friday (via Mike Cugno of CBS Miami). "I mean, I can go a lot of directions, but I won't."
Correa initially made his comments on Me Gustan Los Deportes (via Hector Gomez of Z101 Digital):
Jeter is a five-time Gold Glove winner, claiming the award in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2010.
Correa, who played for the Houston Astros from 2015 to 2021 before entering free agency, won a Gold Glove and a Platinum Glove after his work this year.
Yankees Rumors: NY Prefers 'Stopgap' Shortstop in Free Agency Amid Carlos Correa Buzz

Carlos Correa does not appear headed to the Bronx.
Matthew Roberson of the New York Daily News reported the Yankees prefer a "stopgap" solution at shortstop rather than breaking the bank for either Correa or Corey Seager. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner seemed open to the idea of signing Correa when he spoke to reporters earlier Wednesday.
"He's obviously a great talent. And, look, I think, hopefully, most people have moved on from that. I mean, I think it's only healthy to move on from things like that instead of stewing on it year after year," Steinbrenner said, alluding to the Astros' cheating scandal.
The Yankees used a platoon at shortstop last season that included Tyler Wade and Andrew Velazquez. Their performances were a far cry from the halcyon days of Derek Jeter manning the 6 hole; the position has been a significant source of concern since Didi Grigorious' departure after the 2019 season.
With the Yankees equipped with an unlimited budget and two major stars in Correa and Seager on the market, they seemed like a natural fit for both. Correa didn't win over any fans with his comments regarding Jeter's defense, but those wounds would quickly heal once he puts on pinstripes.
It's possible that Seager, Correa and Trevor Story wind up driving one another's prices down to the point the Yankees feel comfortable handing out a multi-year deal. If they go the stopgap route, Andrelton Simmons could be an intriguing option with high defensive upside.
Yankees' Hal Steinbrenner on Carlos Correa: NY Will 'Look at Every Single Option'

Carlos Correa remains an option for the New York Yankees in free agency, as owner Hal Steinbrenner indicated in his remarks Wednesday, per Jeff Passan of ESPN:
He's obviously a great talent. And, look, I think, hopefully, most people have moved on from that. I mean, I think it's only healthy to move on from things like that instead of stewing on it year after year. But, you know, people have the opinion that they want to have about that particular player. But, in general, we're going to look at every single option. It's the same thing we do every year.
The shortstop comes with controversy as part of the Houston Astros squad that stole signs during its run to the 2017 World Series title. The Yankees and their fans have been critical of the players involved in the scandal, especially after losing to Houston in both the 2017 and 2019 American League Championship Series.
Correa also might have made some enemies in the Bronx when he recently told Me Gustan Los Deportes that Derek Jeter didn't deserve any of his five Gold Glove awards (via MLB Insider Hector Gomez).
The 27-year-old is still a star on the field. He earned a Gold Glove award this season while also hitting .279/.366/.485 with 26 home runs. It was his fifth time in seven years hitting at least 20 home runs, remaining one of the top power-hitting shortstops in the majors.
The Yankees could also use someone with Correa's postseason experience after the two-time All-Star reached the ALCS in five straight seasons with the Astros, including three AL pennants and one championship. Correa has hit .272 in his postseason career with 18 home runs in 79 games.
New York has reached the playoffs in each of the last five years, but the recent run has been littered with inconsistent hitting and early exits.
If the Yankees don't go after Correa, there are still other quality options at the position between Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, Trevor Story and Javier Baez.
MLB Rumors: Carlos Correa, Trevor Story, Corey Seager, More Targeted by Tigers in FA

The Detroit Tigers are reportedly in the market for one of the top shortstops available in free agency.
According to MLB Network's Jon Morosi, the Tigers have checked in with the agents of several available shortstops, including Carlos Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story, Marcus Semien, Javier Baez and Chris Taylor.
Detroit showed some improvement last season, finishing third in the American League Central with a 77-85 record, but it has missed the playoffs in each of the past seven seasons.
The Tigers entered last season having won less than 40 percent of their games in four consecutive seasons, but they upped their winning percentage to .475 in 2021.
While that was partly to do with playing in a weak division, the Tigers benefited from solid offensive production from several players, including Jeimer Candelario, Miguel Cabrera, Jonathan Schoop, Akil Baddoo, Robbie Grossman and Eric Haase.
The biggest issue for Detroit offensively was its middle infield, as none of Niko Goodrum, Willi Castro, Harold Castro or Zack Short put up particularly good numbers.
Because of that, it isn't surprising that the Tigers are looking to pluck a player from perhaps the greatest shortstop free-agent class of all time.
Any of the best free-agent shortstops available would improve Detroit greatly, but Correa may make the most sense given his ties to Tigers manager A.J. Hinch.
Correa spent his first five MLB seasons from 2015-19 playing under Hinch with the Houston Astros. They enjoyed a great deal of success together, winning a World Series in 2017.
The partnership was cut short last year when Hinch was suspended by MLB for the entire 2020 season because of his role in the Astros' illegal sign-stealing system. He was then subsequently fired by the Astros.
Hinch undoubtedly had a positive impact on the Tigers last season, and one can only assume the team would make even greater strides with a two-time All-Star like Correa in the fold.
Many of the other available shortstops would be significant additions as well if the Tigers are unable to secure Correa.
Seager is a two-time All-Star and earned the World Series MVP for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2020; Story is a two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger award winner; Semien finished third in the AL MVP voting with the Oakland Athletics in 2019 and could have another high finish in 2021 after clubbing 45 home runs for the Toronto Blue Jays; Baez won a World Series with the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and finished second in the NL MVP voting in 2018; and Taylor is a one-time All-Star and World Series winner with the Dodgers.
It has been quite some time since the Tigers were legitimate playoff or World Series contenders, but Hinch seems to have them on the right track, and a marquee signing could get them in the playoff conversation next season.
