Less than a week before golf's biggest stars take the stage at The Masters, Jordan Spieth's hot start to the 2021 season continued Saturday at the Valero Texas Open where he's found himself tied with Matt Wallace for the lead at 12 under.

Wallace and Spieth both shot a 67, breaking a three-way tie with Charley Hoffman late in the afternoon to move two strokes ahead of the field.

The Texas native is seeking his first PGA Tour victory since taking The Open Championship in 2017. For Spieth to pick it up only days before he's set to arrive in Augusta, Georgia, would count as another breakthrough moment for a player who was previously considered golf's next major star. At 27 years old, Spieth could still live up to those lofty expectations.

Closing out a victory at the Texas Open would go a long way toward doing so.

Here's a look at where things stand heading into Sunday's action.

Recap

Spieth was nothing short of spectacular Saturday, sinking six birdies on one bogey—including five birdies over his last seven holes to end the round.

To get there, Spieth made 72 percent of his greens in regulation with an average drive of 317.1 yards. Nowhere were those numbers more important to back up than on the par-four No. 17, where his drive went 334 yards and landed in the native area. Spieth recovered with an absolutely perfect approach, landing less than three feet to the cup for a quick tap-in.

The only thing that stopped Spieth from running away with first place Saturday was the play of Wallace. The 30-year-old from England went shot-for-shot with Spieth over the last four holes after picking up his lone bogey on the par-four No. 11.

Before those two began their duel, it looked like Hoffman—who won the Valero Texas Open in 2016—would end the day with at least a share of the lead after shooting a 65. That was enough to move Hoffman up 11 spots but not enough to keep him in first place.

Still, it's hard to be upset with where Hoffman stands heading into the final round. He sank one eagle, six birdies and just one bogey on the day, posting a score 10 strokes better than his opening round of 75. Hoffman made 94 percent of his greens in regulation and let his short game do the rest of the work.

It was a strong, though less-than-stellar, day for Cameron Tringale, who posted his first round above 70 all weekend after shooting 66 and 69 over the first two days of play. That dropped him from first to fourth and four strokes back of the lead.

Sunday will feature an intense showdown between a few likely contenders at Augusta next week. As far a tune-ups go, the PGA Tour has plenty to be excited about before the main event begins at The Masters.

Former Cowboys QB Tony Romo to Compete at 2021 Veritex Bank Championship

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will be competing on the Korn Ferry Tour in April when he takes part in the 2021 Veritex Bank Championship.

Organizers of the Veritex Bank Championship announced Tuesday that Romo will play in the event from Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas:

Romo has not been shy about his affection for golf, especially since retiring from the NFL. The four-time Pro Bowler told the Subpar Podcast with Colt Knost and Drew Stoltz (h/t Josh Berhow of Golf.com) in October that he will be on the course practicing "for a good six to eight hours" some days.

This will mark the sixth career professional event Romo has played in since 2018. He has yet to make the cut in the previous five tournaments but did open the 2019 Safeway Open with a two-under-par 70.

Romo's most recent appearance on the Korn Ferry Tour was at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in July. He shot a 75 in the first round before withdrawing due to a wrist injury.

The 2021 Veritex Bank Championship will take place from April 22-25.

Honda Classic 2021: Matt Jones Overtakes Aaron Wise for Lead with 3rd-Round 69

The leaderboard remains crowded with 18 holes left to play at the 2021 Honda Classic, but Matt Jones is in the driver's seat after the third round.

Since opening the event with a 61 on Thursday, Jones has played the past two days at one under par to enter the final round at 10 under overall.

Wise had his worst performance of the tournament Saturday with a five-over 75, pushing him three shots off the pace and into a tie with J.B. Holmes for second after leading by three shots coming into the third round.

C.T. Pan had the round of the day with a five-under 65 that vaulted him 38 spots up the standings into a tie for fourth place.

Wise looked like he was on track for another low score early in the round. He had two birdies through his first four holes that increased his lead to six shots. Both of his birdies came on putts longer than 10 feet, continuing a trend from the first two rounds.

The sixth hole proved to be a negative turning point for Wise. His tee shot landed in the cart path, forcing him to take a drop, and his second shot landed in the bunker on the left side of the green.

A bogey on the seventh hole dropped Wise to one over for the day and opened the door for the field to catch up with him. The 24-year-old seemed like he had settled down from that moment, but bogeys on No. 10, 15, 17 and 18 pushed him out of the lead with work to do Sunday.

Jones used the back nine to make a move. His birdie on No. 14 put him in a tie with Wise at 10 under, where he would stay for the rest of the round. The Australian native hasn't won on the PGA Tour since the 2014 Shell Houston Open.

Per PGATour.com, Jones ranks 36th on tour with a 69.25 scoring average in final rounds. He did have his worst final-round score last week at The Players Championship (74). It was his first final round over par since October.

Jones is facing heavy competition in his quest to leave PGA National Resort and Spa with a victory. Pan played his first bogey-free round of the tournament.

Holmes has been quietly going about his business all weekend. He hasn't had the one dominant round, like Wise and Jones, but has just put together steady performances each day. The 38-year-old had his second consecutive 67 after opening with a 69 on Thursday.

This has been a disappointing season for Holmes so far, with just one top-50 finish and three missed cuts in seven events coming into the Honda Classic.

If Holmes can repeat what he's done the past three days, he could get his first win since the Genesis Open in February 2019.

The winner of the Honda Classic hasn't led after 54 holes since Rickie Fowler in 2017.

Golf legend Tiger Woods has been released from a Los Angeles hospital and is home in South Florida following a single-car crash on Feb. 23.

"Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery. I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks," Woods said in a statement, per Golf Digest's Daniel Rapaport. "Thank you to the incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. You have all taken such great care of me and I cannot thank you enough. I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger every day."

The 45-year-old had open fractures to his tibia and fibula, requiring a rod insert for stabilization, among other injuries.

Woods was en route to film a celebrity coaching session with GolfTV at Rolling Hills Country Club after hosting the Genesis Invitational a few days earlier when his car rolled over on a winding stretch of road in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California.

First responders found the golfer conscious and transported him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for emergency surgery. He was later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for further procedures and care. Now three weeks later, Woods has been cleared to leave the hospital and return home to Florida to continue his rehabilitation.

Just how long that could take is still unclear, and Woods' team has given no indication of if or when he'll appear in public next, to say little of any future on the PGA Tour.

Prior to the crash, Woods hadn't appeared in any tournaments since The Masters in November, where he finished tied for 38 as defending champion.

Players Championship 2021 Prize Money: Purse Payout and Final Leaderboard

What a weekend for Justin Thomas.

After shooting a brilliant eight under 64 on Saturday, he followed it up with a four under 68 on Sunday to win The Players Championship in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Thomas finished 14 under for the tournament, a stroke better than Lee Westwood and two strokes better than Brian Harman and Bryson DeChambeau.

Other notable finishers included first-round leader Sergio Garcia (-8), Patrick Reed (-5), Phil Mickelson (-3), Jason Day (-3), Dustin Johnson (-1) and Jordan Spieth (-1).

With the win, Thomas secured himself a $2.7 million prize, while Westwood's birdie on No. 18 earned him second place and a $1.6 million payout. You can see the full prize payouts here.

Thomas, who tied the tournament record for the best final 36-hole score, didn't have the best start on the day, going even on the front nine after a bogey on No. 8 and a birdie on No. 9. But that birdie opened the floodgates, with birdies on Nos. 10 and 12 and an eagle on No. 11. A bogey on No. 14 put a halt to the fun, but he answered with another birdie on the 16th.

Rough tee shots on Nos. 17 and 18 threatened to derail his hard work, but Thomas recovered to save par on each hole and secure the win.

For the day, Thomas averaged a driving distance of 298.7 yards, had a driving accuracy of 85.7 percent, hit an impressive 94.4 percent of greens in regulation and lost 2.053 strokes putting, per PGATour.com.

"I fought so hard today. I stayed really patient," Thomas said in his post-round interview. "Probably one of the best rounds of my life, tee to green. Total control of the ball and really was hitting a lot of good putts, just wasn't holing anything. And I stayed patient and stayed patient. And I've seen some pretty crazy stuff on TV happen in the past on this back nine, so I was glad to be on the better side of it this year."

Brooks Koepka was impressed with Thomas' round.

"Congrats @JustinThomas34!" he tweeted. "I can only imagine what this one means."

It's been a tough year for Thomas, whose grandfather died a few months ago. He was emotional when asked how much of his grandfather—who he was very close with—was with him during Sunday's round.

"A lot," he said, holding back tears. "I wish I could talk to him, but I know he's watching."

And he would like what he saw from Thomas this weekend.

Rory McIlroy appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and discussed a number of topics, including honoring Tiger Woods during the final round of the WGC-Workday Championship on Feb. 28.

McIlroy, Justin Thomas, Tony Finau and other golfers showed support for Woods by wearing a red shirt and black pants, the typical Sunday outfit of the 15-time major winner.

Woods suffered serious injuries after a single-car crash in Los Angeles on Feb. 23 and is currently recovering. McIlroy told Fallon that he had spoken to Woods and that he is "doing better."

As for McIlroy, the defending Players Championship winner will be looking to win back-to-back titles at the event beginning Thursday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Arnold Palmer Invitational 2021: Lee Westwood Holds 1-Shot Lead Entering Sunday

Corey Conners' quest for a wire-to-wire victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational came to an end Saturday thanks to a masterful round by PGA Tour veteran Lee Westwood (11 under), who shot a 65 and grabbed the solo lead heading into Sunday.

Conners (10 under) fell into a tie for second place alongside Bryson DeChambeau. The round of 71 Conners put together Saturday served as his highest score of the week but didn't do too much damage to his tournament chances.

The Canadian is looking for his first tour victory since claiming the Valero Texas Open in 2019. Westwood, who moved up 10 positions on the leaderboard, holds an even longer drought. A victory Sunday would be just his third on the tour and his first since the St. Jude Classic in 2010.

Here's how they stack up against the field ahead of Sunday's final round.

Recap

Moving Day was in full effect Saturday as some of the top players in the field posted their best scores of the week. Keegan Bradley posted the lowest round of the tournament with a 64—thanks to six birdies, an eagle and no bogeys—while Doug Ghim and Westwood shot a 65 and Tyrrell Hatton shot a 66.

But those epic rounds were overshadowed by the best shot of the day—a hole-in-one by Jordan Spieth on the par-three No. 2. Spieth's drive landed perfectly on the green and rolled straight into the cup as the Texan watched in awe.

Not to be outdone, Jazz Janewattananond sank an ace of his own on the par-three No. 14 as he seeks his first victory on the PGA Tour.

And while it didn't go in the hole off the tee, DeChambeau launched the longest drive hole No. 6 has seen since 2003, cutting 370 yards all the way across the lake and into the rough just 70 yards from the cup.

DeChambeau would pick up a birdie on the par-five, but this one was more about the journey than the finish as he continues to try to break the sport with herculean drives.

As the youngsters on tour kept one-upping each other, Westwood snuck up the leaderboard with eight birdies, three bogeys and one eagle—including four birdies in five holes on the front nine. Westwood hit 83.3 percent of his greens in regulation and was spotted on the driving range after finishing his round as he fine-tunes his game ahead of Sunday.

Viktor Hovland could use some extra time out there, as well, following a dramatic collapse Saturday after he began the day in third place. Hovland shot a 77 with six bogeys, a double bogey and just three birdies. The Norwegian shot under 70 in his first two rounds before Saturday's meltdown.

It's the second time since December that Hovland has spoiled a strong start. He shot three straight rounds under 70 at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in early January before a final round of 76 led him to finish 31st overall.

The Oklahoma State product could still turn his Arnold Palmer tournament around, but he has plenty of work ahead of him just to get back in contention for a top-10 finish.

Sheriff Executes Search Warrant for Black Box in Tiger Woods' Car After Crash

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department will obtain data from the "black box" in Tiger Woods' single-car crash that sent the golfing legend to the hospital.

According to Brent Schrotenboer and Josh Peter of USA Today, the department executed the search warrant needed to access such data. The department will not seek a warrant to obtain Woods' blood to see if he was under the influence at the time.

Per Schrotenboer and Peter, law enforcement needs to establish probable cause that at least a misdemeanor was committed to access the black box data. However, Sheriff's Deputy John Schloegl suggested it was a routine procedure:

"We're trying to determine if a crime was committed. If somebody is involved in a traffic collision, we've got to reconstruct the traffic collision, if there was any reckless driving, if somebody was on their cell phone or something like that. We determine if there was a crime. If there was no crime, we close out the case, and it was a regular traffic collision."

Schloegl also said, "We can't just assume that somebody's history makes them guilty" in an apparent reference to a 2017 incident in which Woods was found asleep at the wheel with substances in his system.

The deputy pointed out first responders to the single-car crash did not observe evidence of impairment with the 15-time major champion, who was alert when they arrived at the scene.

Woods released a statement Friday explaining he was "recovering and in good spirits" after being moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

He underwent surgery for multiple fractures in his leg.

A number of golfers wore red and black in his honor during Sunday's final round of the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession. Woods was known for wearing red on Sundays, especially when he was in contention for a victory.

Pebble Beach National Pro-Am 2021: Jordan Spieth Leads Entering Final Round

Jordan Spieth is 18 holes away from his first PGA Tour win in over three years.

Spieth remains in sole possession of the lead at the 2021 Pebble Beach Pro-Am for the second straight day. His score of 13 under par is two shots ahead of a group of five players tied for second place.

It looked like Daniel Berger was going to be sitting alongside Spieth with both players heading to No. 18 at 13 under. Spieth made par to keep his score intact. Berger cost himself off the tee when his drive landed out of bounds. He wound up carding a seven on the par five, dropping his score to 11 under.

Here's the top of the leaderboard with 18 holes remaining from Pebble Beach, via PGATour.com:

1. Jordan Spieth (-13)

T2. Nate Lashley (-11)

T2. Tom Hoge (-11)

T2. Russell Knox (-11)

T2. Patrick Cantlay (-11)

T2. Daniel Berger (-11)

T7. Brian Stuard (-10)

T7. Maverick McNealy (-10)

T7. Jason Day (-10)

T7. Paul Casey (-10)

Berger was virtually flawless in the tournament prior to his gaffe on the final hole. He hit just two bogeys in 53 holes and had his second eagle in as many days Saturday. The Florida native's third-round eagle came on the par-four fourth hole:

That turned out to be the high-water mark of the round for Berger. He is still very much in the mix to win, but Saturday's closing sequence put a stain on what had been an otherwise terrific tournament.

Spieth took what was looking like a disappointing outing and turned it into a solid performance with his own eagle on No. 16. The 27-year-old seemed as if he were going to end the round over par and two shots off the lead, but he found the bottom of the cup from 160 yards out to get under par for the day:

https://twitter.com/FieldYates/status/1360719455517614086

The biggest problem for Spieth on Saturday was on the green. He cost himself 1.29 shots with the putter, but it didn't completely sink his overall game. That trend will likely have to get better Sunday if he wants to win.

Prior to the eagle, Spieth was playing the back nine at three over with bogeys on Nos. 10, 12 and 14.

Nate Lashley looked like he was going to be in the mix with Spieth for the lead heading into the final round. The 38-year-old was playing at six under for the day going onto No. 17. He had to three-putt the par-three hole to take his first bogey of the day.

Things snowballed for Lashley at No. 18 when his first three shots hit the rock outline, fairway bunker and greenside bunker. He finished the hole with a six, his first time bogeying a par five this weekend.

Despite the rough ending to his third round, Lashley's 68 was tied with seven other players for the second-lowest Saturday score.

Being in the lead heading into the final round hasn't been good for Spieth in recent years.

It was just last week that Spieth was tied for the lead after three rounds at the Waste Management Phoenix Open. He finished with a 72 on Sunday to finish tied for fourth place, two shots behind Brooks Koepka.

Spieth is chasing his first win since the 2017 Open Championship. He hasn't posted a final-round score under 72 since the ZOZO Championship in October.

American Express 2021: Max Homa, Tony Finau, Si Woo Kim Share Lead After Round 3

Max Homa, Tony Finau and Si Woo Kim top the American Express leaderboard at 15 under following the conclusion of the third round Saturday at PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta, California.

Richy Werenski sits alone in fourth at 14 under, and Russell Knox, Brian Harman and Emiliano Grillo are tied for fifth at 13 under.

Twenty-four golfers have shot 10 under or better thus far.

Here's a quick recap of how the field's top seven golfers did Saturday in addition to some highlights.

(Full leaderboard here.)

Max Homa

No golfer had more birdies Saturday than Homa, who finished with nine on the day to end in a three-person tie for first.

He earned birdies on the second through fifth holes but lost two strokes thanks to a double bogey on the seventh, which featured a tee shot into the water and an 11-foot, two-inch bogey putt that did not fall in the hole.

Undeterred, Homa went five under the rest of the way. His most impressive putt, however, may have been to save par on the last, finding center cut from just under 10 feet.

Homa, who won the 2019 Wells Fargo Championship, is looking for his second career PGA Tour win.

Tony Finau

The resilient Finau did not let a double bogey on No. 13 curtail his round, as he responded with three straight birdies and a pair of pars to launch himself into a first-place tie entering Sunday.

Finau opened his day with a bogey but bore down then as well, finishing the front nine with four birdies.

Tournament wins have somehow escaped Finau, who has only won once on the PGA Tour when he took the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. Finau has finished top 10 in eight majors, so his form is clearly excellent at its best. The question is whether Finau finally breaks through Sunday. He has as good of a chance as anyone.

Si Woo Kim

Kim entered Saturday tied with Finau for the tournament lead, and he ended Saturday that way (plus Homa) after shooting a five-under 67.

Kim's scorecard did not feature any bogeys, which was the case Thursday as well. He notably went five under Saturday despite losing more than a stroke gained putting, per the PGATour.com. More luck on the green could lead to Kim taking this tournament if his tee-to-green game stays on point.

Richy Werenski

Four uneventful pars to start Werenski's third round gave way to a scintillating stretch featuring a six-under score through seven holes, including a birdie on the par-five fifth that featured a 224-yard approach within five feet of the pin. He added birdies at Nos. 7, 8, 10 and 11.

Werenski also stuck a great tee shot at No. 17 for his seventh under-par hole of the day:

The 29-year-old is looking for his second-ever PGA Tour win.

Russell Knox

The round of the day goes to Knox, whose eight-under 64 led the entire field. His clean round featured four birdies on the front nine, four birdies on the back nine and no bogeys anywhere on the scorecard.

Knox wasn't a guarantee to make the weekend, finishing the first two days at five under (two over the three-under cut line). But now he's right in the middle of the race for the tournament win.

Emiliano Grillo

Grillo started hot with five birdies on his first eight holes to move to 14 under overall:

However, the back nine was not as friendly, with Grillo closing with a bogey on the last hole following an errant tee shot and an approach that found the bunker.

Still, Grillo is still well in contention just two shots back.

Brian Harman

Like Homa, Harman had four straight birdies on the second, third, fourth and fifth holes. Another birdie on the eighth put him at five under for the day.

Unfortunately, a tee shot at No. 9 found the water, and his third shot found the rough. He finished that hole with a double bogey but bounced back with back-to-back birdies and seven pars to end Saturday at 13 under.
