Lionel Messi Thinks About Scoring 'Less and Less'; Not 'Obsessed with Goals'

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has said he is thinking "less and less" about scoring goals at this point in his career.

The 32-year-old has been one of the most prolific players in the game throughout his senior career. However, in recent years his game has evolved, developing from a wide forward into a false nine and now into a player who drops deeper to midfield.

Speaking about his changes as a footballer, Messi said his game is becoming geared more towards playmaking than scoring, per DAZN (h/t Stephen Crawford of Goal):

"I think less and less about scoring goals. I'm starting to step back more and more to be the creator rather than the one who finishes.

"Obviously I like scoring, and If have a chance I'll take it, but every time I go on to the pitch I'm less focused on scoring goals and more focused on the game. I've never been obsessed with goals.

"I understand that people will talk about it when I stop scoring so many, but that's part of the game, part of growing as a player and adapting to the times, to be the best player both for yourself and for the team."

Messi appears more intent on orchestrating attacks rather than finishing them at this stage, and there's little doubt the Barcelona star has the ability to create chances for team-mates.

La Liga looked at a recent opportunity the forward conjured and reflected on his consistent output in terms of assists:

ESPN FC noted Messi was the most creative player in the game over the course of the previous decade:

When he drops into deeper positions, Messi is afforded more time in possession. In these areas he's adept at dribbling past opponents who get too tight, while defenders who drop off are susceptible to the Barcelona star dropping passes into dangerous areas.

Despite the changes in his role, Messi has been able to remain prolific.

Messi won the European Golden Shoe prize again last season, making it six successes in total:

This season, the Barcelona forward missed the start of the campaign due to injury problems, although he's more than made up for lost time. He's already netted 13 La Liga goals in as many starts, putting him one goal ahead of Karim Benzema in the race for the Pichichi trophy.

Messi's ability to retain his goalscoring edge while managing matches and creating chances is a testament to his remarkable natural talent. It suggests that regardless of what he focuses on in the coming years, he'll be able to continue having a huge influence on matches.

Lionel Messi Says 'Special Duel' with Cristiano Ronaldo Will 'Remain Forever'

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi believes the rivalry he has shared with Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo will "remain forever."

The pair are considered the finest players of their generation, as they have set new benchmarks for consistent goalscoring. Messi recently claimed his sixth Ballon d'Or prize, while Ronaldo has earned the accolade on five occasions.

The comparisons between the pair were most intense when Ronaldo was playing for Real Madrid, the great rivals of Barcelona, in La Liga. Speaking to DAZN (h/t Kieran Francis of Goal), Messi said the presence of Ronaldo made for an enjoyable battle:

"It was a special duel, and it will remain forever because it lasted many years and it is not easy to maintain certain levels for a long time. Plus, the teams we played in were also very demanding, both Real Madrid and Barca, the two best in the world.

"Competing on an equal footing for so many years, I think it will remain forever. The sporting duel between us was very nice on a personal level, and I think people had fun too, whether it was from Madrid or from Barca, or even only football fans in general."

At the turn of the year, ESPN FC reflected on how prolific the duo have been in front of goal over the previous decade:

Speaking after his recent Ballon d'Or success, Messi said he was pleased to have edged ahead of Ronaldo with his sixth accolade:

It's testament to the talent, mentality and durability of both that they have been able to maintain these standards for such a prolonged spell.

Given their age, the clubs they played for and the positions they operated in early in Ronaldo's time in La Liga—primarily as wide forwards—it was understandable that there were consistent comparisons between the duo.

However, following Ronaldo's move to Juventus in 2018, the incessant talk regarding the pair and who the superior player is has dwindled. Not only are they operating in different divisions, as they've got older their games have changed too, with Ronaldo becoming more of a No. 9 and Messi frequently dropping into midfield positions.

It's a challenge to compare the two:

Although both are edging closer to the twilight years of their career, they each remain ambitious and are still among the best players in the world.

Barcelona and Juventus are both in fights for their respective domestic titles this season, with Real Madrid and Inter Milan offering serious competition. The two clubs also remain in the UEFA Champions League; if the Blaugrana and the Bianconeri were to meet each other in the quarter-finals or beyond, debates surrounding Messi and Ronaldo would intensify again.

Vicente Del Bosque Surprised by Barcelona's Decision to Sack Ernesto Valverde

Former Spain and Real Madrid manager Vicente Del Bosque was surprised by Barcelona's decision to sack Ernesto Valverde, saying he felt bad for the tactician.

The Blaugrana announced Quique Setien as Valverde's replacement Monday. Given the Catalans lead La Liga, Del Boque was surprised by the sudden change, per Blindgol (via Sport):

"I'm nobody to judge those who run a football club. I feel bad as I always do whenever a coach is sacked midway through the season. Especially someone like Valverde, who has always been an example of how to act and behave. He's a fantastic man who represents a lot of the great qualities of being a good coach. Right now, they are in first place (in the league) and have qualified for the next round in Europe.

"I thought they were doing quite well, had some ups and downs like every team, but generally speaking were doing well.

"In English football, it's becoming a lot like it is here. The coaches don't get a lot of time, have less and less credibility and aren't trusted by those who run the club."

The defending La Liga champions lost to Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals of the new Spanish Super Cup trophy, and that defeat proved the final straw for the Barcelona board.

Valverde had a tremendous record during his time at the Camp Nou:

But even though he guided the team to two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey win and a share of the current La Liga lead―the Catalans and Real have 40 points―a lack of success in Europe proved his downfall.

Back-to-back UEFA Champions League exits after winning the first leg were costly:

It was a surprise to see Valverde return after the defeat to Liverpool, and the Blaugrana never truly recovered from the disaster at Anfield. While the results this season have been solid, Barcelona have not consistently played inspired football and have been far too reliant on Lionel Messi.

The decision not to part with Valverde at the end of last season, but rather wait until January, is what appears to have surprised people the most. Per Andrew Gaffney, it's another example of the club handling things the wrong way:

Setien is known for coaching his teams to play attractive, attacking football but has never won a trophy in nearly two decades of managing. His last job was at Real Betis, where the high point was a sixth-placed finish in La Liga during his first season.

Barcelona's Setien: 'Objective Is to Win Everything' After 'Walking with Cows'

New Barcelona boss Quique Setien is targeting silverware after landing his dream job at the Camp Nou.

The 61-year-old replaced Ernesto Valverde in the dugout on Monday, signing a contract until 2022.

"My objective is to win everything!" he said, per AS' Robbie Dunne. "Everything you can win...this club has no other path to follow. Year after year, to win as many trophies as possible. I think the best way to victory is by playing good football. It doesn't always happen but it's not just about one day—it's about keeping it going."

Setien became a manager in 2001 when he took over his hometown club, Racing Santander, but he has never won honours in his coaching career.

"I don't have an extensive CV," he conceded, per Ben Hayward of the Evening Standard. "I don't have trophies. But what I have is that I have shown a philosophy that I love. The only thing I have done is to make Betis, Las Palmas and Lugo play really good football."

Setien most recently took charge of Real Betis. He left them at the end of last season after guiding them to sixth and 10th in La Liga during his two campaigns in charge.

Silverware is a must for a club of Barcelona's stature, although trophies alone won't keep a manager's position secure.

Valverde delivered back-to-back La Liga titles and the Copa del Rey at the Camp Nou, but the quality of the football on display was sometimes lacking, which was a contributing factor in his dismissal.

Given the calibre of players Setien has to work with at Barca, if he can get the team playing to a high level, then trophies should follow naturally anyway.

The coach said he had not expected such an opportunity to come his way, per Tom Allnutt of the Agence France-Presse:

A former central midfielder who appeared for Spain three times, Setien has long had an affinity for Barcelona and their technical brand of football:

He has inherited a side that are incredibly reliant on Lionel Messi to win games for them, with that reliance perhaps set to increase following news that forward Luis Suarez will be out for four months after knee surgery.

Despite their flaws, there is still a great deal of talent to work with at the Camp Nou, and the team are top of La Liga on goal difference after 19 games. They're also in the UEFA Champions League last 16, where they'll face Napoli.

His first game in charge will be at home to Granada in La Liga on Sunday.

Ernesto Valverde Wishes Quique Setien Luck in Farewell Letter to Barcelona Fans

Sacked Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has penned an open letter to the club's fans thanking them for their support during his time at the club, as well as wishing replacement Quique Setien well in the role.

The Blaugrana released a statement Monday evening confirming the termination of Valverde's contract after two-and-a-half years at the helm. They announced Setien as his successor shortly after.

Valverde, 55, published a farewell on Barcelona's official website and said he enjoyed joyful moments during an "intense two-and-a-half years" at the Camp Nou, "but also others that have been tough and difficult."

The former Athletic Club, Villarreal and Valencia coach highlighted "the affection showed towards me during my time as coach" and continued:

"I would also like to thank all the people I have worked with at the club for their support and how they treated me during the two-and-a-half seasons, especially those who work in and around the first team and with whom I have shared so many moments at the Ciutat Esportiva and during away trips. Of course, I would like to thank the players for all their efforts that have allowed us to claim four trophies together. From this day, I wish them all the luck in the world and to the new coach Quique Setien also."

Barcelona opted to part ways with the tactician despite the club leading La Liga, level on 40 points alongside Zinedine Zidane's Real Madrid.

DW Sports highlighted the fact Barcelona had opted to part ways with Valverde despite the club thriving off the field and still having lofty domestic ambitions this season:

The decision to fire Valverde came not long after Barca lost 3-2 to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final on Thursday. Rivals Real went on to beat Atletico on penalties in Sunday's final, which earned the club a €12 million (£10.3 million) prize payout, per J.I. Garcia-Ochoa of Marca.

Reuters journalist Richard Martin couldn't help but notice some poetry in Valverde being replaced by Setien, who was the only coach to get the better of him on home soil during his time in charge of Barcelona:

It was two away defeats in particular that hurt Valverde's reputation at the club, losing three-goal first-leg leads away to Liverpool and AS Roma in each of the past two UEFA Champions League knockout campaigns.

While it's true rivals Real have endured something of a wobble in form over the past 18 months—particularly in La Liga—Marca attested to Valverde's fine work in keeping Barca atop the Spanish table:

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta criticised his old club for their handling of the Valverde sacking and told Onda Cero (h/t AS) that the way his situation had been dealt with was "a bit ugly."

Setien, 61, has signed a contract at the Camp Nou until June 2022 and will make his Barcelona managerial debut at home to Granada on Sunday.

Barcelona Top 2020 Deloitte Money League Ahead of Real Madrid, Manchester United

Barcelona have topped the 2020 Deloitte Football Money League ahead of Real Madrid and Manchester United

The Catalan giants overtook Los Blancos, who topped the 2019 Money League, and became the first club to exceed €800 million (£687.3 million) in revenue.

Eight of the top 20 are Premier League sides, while Serie A has the next most representatives with four. There are three apiece from La Liga and the Bundesliga, while there are two entrants from Ligue 1.

Here's the top 20 in full:

Lyon and Napoli entered the top 20, while AC Milan and Newcastle United dropped out. The Rossoneri are 21st, but the Magpies aren't even in the top 30 this year.

The top 20 also enjoyed a combined revenue increase of €1 billion from last year.

Barcelona's lead over Real Madrid is a record:

Deloitte's Dan Jones told Jamie Gardner of the Press Association (h/t MailOnline) that Barcelona have taken top spot by maximising their commercial revenue, such as merchandising and licensing income.

Jones observed their commercial revenue alone, which totalled €383.5 million (£326.6 million), was higher than 12th-placed Borussia Dortmund's total income.

"With the club expecting further growth of €30 million (£25.5 million) in commercial revenues and total revenue of almost €880 million (£749.5 million) in 2019-20, we expect them to retain the top spot in next year's edition," he added.

Meanwhile, he said United are in danger of being caught by their domestic rivals for the first time:

"United have been the top English club since we started the Money League, but that could come under a bit of pressure when we do it in 2021.

"That will cover this season when Liverpool are having an tremendous season on the pitch, so we think there's a possibility of United losing that No. 1 position."

The Red Devils are projecting a sizeable fall in revenue this season after they missed out on UEFA Champions League qualification in the last campaign:

According to Jones, that loss could see Liverpool or Manchester City leapfrog them if they go deep in the Champions League, which would bring in a great deal of broadcast revenue.

United are under pressure again this season to finish in a Champions League place, as they sit five points outside the Premier League's top four after 22 games.

Arsenal are another English club who have suffered for missing out on Europe's premier competition:

The Gunners have finished outside the top four in each of the last three seasons. They had the chance to secure Champions League football last season by winning the UEFA Europa League, but they lost 4-1 to rivals Chelsea in the final.

The Europa League will be Arsenal's best chance of qualifying for the Champions League this season, too, as they sit 10th in the Premier League, 11 points off the top four.

Ernesto Valverde, Barcelona Part Ways; Quique Setien Named as Replacement

Barcelona and manager Ernesto Valverde reached an agreement to end his tenure after two-and-a-half seasons with the club on Monday, with Quique Setien being named as Valverde's replacement.

Setien, who most recently served as the manager of La Liga's Real Betis, received a contract that runs through June 30, 2022.

Catalunya Radio and Onda Cero (h/t Football Espana) each previously reported the Spanish champions had begun negotiations with Valverde over his exit. His contract was not due to expire for five more months.

The 55-year-old, who represented Barca as a player, is set to part ways with the Blaugrana after they lost 3-2 to Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals on Thursday. His side lead La Liga on goal difference, but confidence in his ability has depleted.

Barcelona were recently hit by the news that striker Luis Suarez will be out of action for four months. A club statement said he underwent surgery following an injury to the "lateral meniscus in his right knee" (h/t Reuters).

Valverde's side successfully retained the league title last season but lost 2-1 to Valencia in the 2019 Copa del Rey final.

Barcelona also fell short in the 2018-19 Champions League, letting a 3-0 first-leg lead slip against Liverpool in the semi-finals. It was a second wasted opportunity in Europe on Valverde's watch after his side were knocked out by AS Roma in the last eight of the previous campaign despite winning the first leg 4-1.

The tactician arrived at the Camp Nou in 2017 after impressing during his second stint in charge of Athletic Bilbao. Valverde also previously managed top-flight teams Valencia, Espanyol and Villarreal.

Andres Iniesta: Barcelona's Behaviour Toward Ernesto Valverde Is 'A Little Ugly'

Barcelona legend Andres Iniesta has criticised the club's treatment of manager Ernesto Valverde amid reports he could be sacked on Monday.

According to Sport, Valverde took training at Barca on Monday, but there will be several meetings at the club, including one at board level, that could see him relieved of his duties by the end of the day. Barca reportedly sounded out club legends Xavi Hernandez and Ronald Koeman over the weekend.

Spanish football journalist Guillem Balague summarised his situation:

Iniesta told El Transistor (h/t Sport): "Barcelona's behaviour has been a little ugly. You have to have respect for your current coach. The way things are done is what can hurt the most."

The 35-year-old, who left Barca in 2018 for Vissel Kobe, added that "Valverde's situation has been weakened," and he hopes "the situation at the club is solved because it's not nice what's going on, not for the coach, the players or the fans."

Valverde's position has come under threat after Barcelona let slip a 2-1 lead at Atletico Madrid in the semi-final of the Spanish Super Cup on Thursday, despite the competition being of relatively low importance.

Football commentator Kevin Hatchard and sports journalist Richard Martin are among those to criticise Barca's treatment of Valverde:

The 55-year-old has delivered back-to-back La Liga titles at the Camp Nou, as well as the Copa del Rey in his first season. The club reached the final of that competition last season, but they were beaten 2-1 by Valencia.

Some sections of Barcelona's support have been calling for him to leave for some time, though.

The team rely more heavily on Lionel Messi than ever before, and as a result of that their play rarely compares well with the attractive football they so often produced under Valverde's predecessors Pep Guardiola, Tito Vilanova and Luis Enrique.

Resentment from those supporters has largely been driven by the manner of Barcelona's UEFA Champions League exits under the coach, though.

In his first season, the team gave up a 4-1 first-leg lead against Roma in the quarter-finals, going out on away goals after a 3-0 defeat in Italy. Last season's departure was similar, as they beat Liverpool 3-0 at the Camp Nou in the first leg of the semi-final before losing 4-0 at Anfield.

Barcelona blogger Kevin Williams believes Valverde should move on but defended his accomplishments at the club:

The Blaugrana's pursuit of a midseason replacement for Valverde is an unnecessary humiliation, particularly when his contract is up in the summer anyway.

If Valverde is sacked on Monday, he'll leave Barca top of La Liga after 19 matches, ahead of Real Madrid on goal difference, with Napoli awaiting in the last 16 of the Champions League and the team yet to enter the Copa del Rey.

Barcelona's Luis Suarez out 4 Months Following Surgery for Knee Injury

Barcelona have been dealt a major blow after confirming Luis Suarez will miss around four months through injury.

Per a statement on the Blaugrana's official website, the striker underwent surgery on his right knee on Sunday and is set to be sidelined until May.

Other than Lionel Messi, no other Barca player has made a bigger contribution than Suarez in front of goal in 2019-20.

The former Liverpool star has scored 11 times and provided seven assists in 17 La Liga appearances this term and returned three goals and two assists in the UEFA Champions League.

The 32-year-old is also one of Barcelona's more experienced campaigners, and he will be sorely missed in what looks set to be a tight title battle with Real Madrid:

His absence will provide summer signing Antoine Griezmann with an opportunity to prove he is worth the £107 million Barca paid to bag him from Atletico Madrid:

The Frenchman's debut season at the Camp Nou has not been a disaster—he has netted seven goals in 18 league appearances. But it could have gone better.

With Suarez on the sidelines, Griezmann is likely to be played more regularly in the No. 9 role, where he should have more opportunities to find the net.

Barca also have decent attacking cover in the shape of Ansu Fati and Carles Perez, while Ousmane Dembele should be returning from injury in the near future.

Suarez's injury is not terminal to Barcelona's ambitions in La Liga, the Champions League or the Copa del Rey.

As long as Messi remains fit, they will have a chance of winning all three tournaments, particularly if Suarez can provide a boost at the business end of the season when he returns to fitness.

But the Uruguayan is a big loss, and Barca cannot afford to lose any more key attacking personnel or they will be in big trouble.

Barcelona's former midfielder Xavi Hernandez has reportedly agreed to become the next manager of the club at the end of the 2019-20 season.

According to Ignasi Oliva Gispert of Goal, he will replace current head coach Ernesto Valverde, although Xavi, who is currently the manager of Qatari outfit Al Sadd, appears poised to take the job when the Blaugrana's campaign has finished.

"[Xavi] respects the current incumbent Valverde and does not want to be the man to force him out of the job," Gispert said.

According to Luis F. Rojo of Marca, Barcelona did offer Xavi the opportunity to take over the club this month, although he opted against leaving Al Sadd.

Ben Hayward of the Evening Standard said Xavi told Barcelona Chief Executive Oscar Grau and Sporting Director Eric Abidal of his intentions when they met recently.

Xavi has confirmed he held talks with Barcelona officials, although he would not divulge the details of the meeting.

"I cannot hide it's my dream to coach Barcelona," he added. "I've said it many times in many interviews. Everyone knows I support Barcelona from the bottom of my heart. But I'm doing my job here. I'm doing my best. I was focused on the semi-final, and now I'm focusing on the final."

Xavi's team were 4-1 winners over Al-Rayyan on Saturday in the semi-final of the Qatar Cup, and they will play in the final on January 17.

As Sid Lowe of the Guardian relayed, Barcelona's pursuit of Xavi while Valverde remains in charge has been public:

Spanish football writer Richard Martin also commented on the number of reports regarding Xavi's imminent or eventual appointment:

Valverde has steered Barcelona to two La Liga titles in his first two seasons at the club, and the Blaugrana are currently joint-top of the table. However, he's never been hugely popular with fans.

Valverde has overseen catastrophic UEFA Champions League eliminations at the hands of Roma and Liverpool in recent years, while the team doesn't play with a distinct identity, something that has always been crucial at the Camp Nou.

Xavi, who has made more appearances for Barcelona than anyone, is well-versed in the club's ethos, and his appointment would go down well with supporters. However, he only started his coaching career in May last year, and there would obviously be huge pressure.
