At just 23 years old, Auston Matthews has already established himself as one of the best players in the NHL.

Since being selected No. 1 overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2016 draft, Matthews has made four All-Star Game appearances and won the Calder Memorial Trophy. He currently leads the league in goals scored with 39.

Before putting the finishing touches on a fantastic regular season next week, Matthews sat down with B/R to answer fan questions about everything from playing in Toronto, his dream top line, starting his own NFT collection and more.

@SgtObilly Who has the strangest pregame rituals on the Leafs?

Jason Spezza, after on-ice warmups, he gets fully undressed and does another warmup in-between warmups and the first period. Taking off your full gear and warming up again is not something I would do.

@Dana_Grey What made you start your own NFT collection and what's your take on the movement itself?

I'd say my take is it's pretty interesting, but I think it's just something I wanted to look into and just experiment. I would like to think I'm a pretty artistic guy so I kind of like that stuff. I was pretty excited with how they came out.

@STLBluesBR If you could create a line to play on with anyone in the league (including 2 defensemen), who would make the cut?

Myself, McDavid and Patrick Kane as the two guys on the forward line. At D, Roman Josi and Victor Hedman.

@TheTonyRomo What do you think about Team USA's chances in the Olympics next year?

I really like them. A lot of really good young talent. Fortunately, I've been able to play with a lot of guys that might make the team. I think it will be just an amazing experience to get to play in the Olympics and be in that kind of environment.

@therealGM How important is it to you that you're Hispanic hockey at the pro level

I take a lot of pride in my ancestry and where I come from. I love my family and they've been a huge support cast for my whole career, so I feel really lucky. I definitely take a lot of pride in where I come from for sure.

@BR_NHL It seems like some NHL players, including yourself, have shown more personality and individual brands lately. What have you seen from other stars around the league like yourself PK, Seguin etc. showing personal style through social media and other outlets?

I think it's great. I love seeing stuff like that. Over the past 5-6 years, the league has continued to get younger. It's awesome to see young guys making an impact. In other leagues, guys do a really good job of branding themselves and just showing their personalities through their social media and style, so I think that's a really good direction for where the NHL has gone.

@Wrage You're in charge of picking talent for The NHL on TNT show. Who are the NHL personalities you'd want to watch?

Jeremy Roenick, Brett Hull—two fiery personalities, and then I need two guys to balance it out. Maybe a Patrick Sharp, someone very well-spoken who has been in the league. And maybe Kevin Weekes, got to get a goalie on there.

@VaughnViktorr Who has the best stache out of Freddie Mercury, Ron Burgundy and yourself?

Freddie Mercury. I dressed up as him for Halloween last year. Will Ferrell isn't a full-time stash guy like Freddie, mine’s not as mature.

@justi_in_time Is Bieber the better hockey player or you the better singer?

He's the better hockey player for sure. I'm not a great singer at all. He can dangle. My singing is not up to par, I might need a few lessons before I try anything.

@BayLegend Who’s the funniest teammate you've ever played with?

Joe Thornton. I've been with him for 4 months so that tells you all you need to know. He's a legendary guy. He's so funny and keeps things light. He just makes everyone happy with this aurora, this great energy.

@realalexlarsen What's your best story from playing with a legend like Joe Thornton?

He's never really got clothes on. He's always without a shirt or just in his little thong or spandex. Our PR guy came up with a good idea to film a video for our old teammate Patrick Marleau so we made Jumbo get in his thong which he had no problem doing and it came out pretty good.

@AnthonyRossi16 What advice would you give to a young kid trying to go pro?

Have people around you that you trust and have your best interest in mind. For me, it has always been my parents/my family. I have a really good relationship with my agent too.

@CJShoe Is it weird being an American superstar for a Canadian team?

I don't think it’s weird, but I find it funny. It's funny that people just forget that I'm not Canadian.

@CJShoe Where would you have committed if you went the college route?

Denver and Boston University would have been the choices.

@ZPetersel Who is the young player in the league that you love to watch and think has high potential?

I like Tim Stutzle on Ottawa. He plays with a lot of pace and is a good skater. And Rasmus Sandin on our squad. I think can be a really good player for us as well.

@BundleNation77 Tim Horton or Dunkin Donuts?

Timmy's. I'm personally not a fan of Dunkin Donuts. I think I would choose Starbucks over the three.

@avfanatic Favorite shoes you own?

Got a couple nice pairs of Jordans—Jordan Off-White UNC edition, but I don't wear them a lot because they're pricey. I've probably worn them one time. I like to get more affordable stuff that I don't mind wearing as much.

@BR_Walkoff: Who's your favorite MLB player and why?

David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez we're my favorite players growing up because I watched the Red Sox a lot. I'm a Dodgers fan though so I like Cody Bellinger. He's a chill dude.

@DutchMatrix If you left hockey tomorrow, what career would you pursue?

I feel like I was put on earth to play hockey so I don't really think about that. That's a tough one for me.

@BR_Betting: Best team gambling story?

It was my first or second year and we were in Edmonton. There's a casino attached to the rink and Mitch Marner won a lot of money playing blackjack that's all I'm going to say. I was playing with him and he got really hot. I've never seen someone play like that before.

@realjacobkonrad Thoughts on Tom Wilson and the Rangers’ organizational response to his actions?

It was quite a statement. I think it's important that guys gotta respect players. It's obviously a contact sport and there's physically and other elements to it but I think everyone just wants to have respect for one another and play within the rules.

Matthews has been instrumental in turning the Maple Leafs back into a powerhouse franchise.

Prior to his debut in the 2016-17 season, Toronto made just one playoff appearance in the previous 11 years. The Maple Leafs have made the postseason in each of the past four years, though they are still seeking their first series win since 2013.

Toronto currently leads the North Division by six points over the Edmonton Oilers. The franchise has already clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season with four games still to play.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are headed to the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season.

Toronto clinched its postseason spot Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.

Here is a look at how Toronto stacks up to the rest of the league in the updated playoff standings.

North Division

Toronto Maple Leafs: 67 points (31-13-5)

Edmonton Oilers: 58 points (28-16-2)

Winnipeg Jets: 57 points (27-18-3)

Montreal Canadiens: 51 points (21-18-9)

West Division

Vegas Golden Knights: 70 points (34-11-2)

Colorado Avalanche: 66 points (31-11-4)

Minnesota Wild: 65 points (31-14-3)

St. Louis Blues: 50 points (22-19-6)

Central Division

Carolina Hurricanes: 71 points (32-10-7)

Florida Panthers: 69 points (32-14-5)

Tampa Bay Lightning: 68 points (33-14-2)

Nashville Predators: 56 points (27-22-2)

East Divison

Washington Capitals: 68 points (32-13-4)

Pittsburgh Penguins: 67 points (32-15-3)

New York Islanders: 63 points (29-15-5)

Boston Bruins: 62 points (28-14-6)

Whether the Maple Leafs can end their title drought will be one of the biggest storylines of the entire playoffs. After all, the proud franchise last won a Stanley Cup during the 1966-67 season and has fallen well short of challenging to change that in recent years.

It lost in the first round three straight years prior to last season when the qualifying round was put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Toronto didn't even make it past that qualifying round, losing to the Columbus Blue Jackets in five games.

That was the backdrop as this season started with a division realignment to minimize travel during the pandemic.

Toronto found itself in the North Division with the other six Canadian teams, which wasn't a problem out of the gates.

The Maple Leafs started 18-4-2 and built enough cushion to allow for brief losing streaks during the season. While those came, such as when they went 1-6 in their next seven and lost five in a row in April (two of which came in overtime), they remained in a position where it was just a matter of time before they clinched a playoff spot as they battled for a division crown.

A major reason for that is the play of Auston Matthews, who has lived up to his reputation as one of the most skilled players in the league.

The Hart Memorial Trophy contender has anchored Toronto's offense as a premier goal scorer who has 59 points on 35 goals and 24 assists. He scored a goal in Wednesday's win over Montreal.

"He's playing at a different level right now," teammate Alex Kerfoot said in February, per Jackie Spiegel of Sporting News. "It's fun to watch. We're lucky to have him on our team. It seems like he's playing a different game than most guys out there. So, it's fun to watch. I don't have any more adjectives other than what you guys have probably been using, but, yeah, he's playing at an elite, elite level."

Throw in Mitchell Marner and John Tavares, and Toronto has enough firepower to compete against any team in the league during the playoffs.

Fans who have been looking for a title for decades are desperate for more than just a competitive team, though, as the Maple Leafs attempt to make even the second round for the first time since 2003-04.

The Tampa Bay Lightning became the sixth NHL team to clinch a postseason berth, locking up their spot in the playoffs with a 7-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday.

The Stanley Cup champions are 33-14-2 and in third place in the Central Division after a realignment caused by the coronavirus pandemic grouped them with the Florida Panthers, Chicago Blackhawks, Nashville Predators, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars.

It's the fourth consecutive season the Bolts have secured a berth in the postseason, and they will be expected to make another deep run as long as they stay healthy. So far, though, that hasn't proved too straightforward.

Steven Stamkos has been out since April 8 after being placed on long-term injured reserve with a lower body injury, while Nikita Kucherov isn't expected to return before the end of the regular season after hip surgery in December. And defenseman Jan Rutta missed about a month with a lower body injury in late March.

The Lightning still have enough pieces to succeed in the postseason, but they will need them back if they are to have a legitimate shot to repeat in the Stanley Cup Final.

The goal for the rest of the season will be to get everyone healthy and tinker with some last-minute line combinations before the playoffs open on May 11.

The Florida Panthers have earned another shot at the postseason.

They clinched a postseason berth Tuesday, using a four-goal third period to overcome the Nashville Predators, 7-4.

The Panthers will head to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1996-97.

Florida fell to the New York Islanders in the qualifying round last year.

This year's playoff format is different than in previous years. The league's four location-based divisions will send their top four teams to the playoffs, with the first two rounds consisting of intradivision games. The teams that make it out of that "group stage" will be reseeded based on their regular-season results.

With that in mind, here's a look at the current landscape of the playoffs if the regular season were to conclude today:

West Division

*Vegas Golden Knights: 70 points (34-11-2)

*Colorado Avalanche: 66 points (31-11-4)

*Minnesota Wild: 65 points (31-13-3)

St. Louis Blues: 48 points (21-19-6)

Central Division

*Carolina Hurricanes: 69 points (31-10-7)

*Florida Panthers: 69 points (32-14-5)

*Tampa Bay Lightning: 68 points (33-14-2)

Nashville Predators: 56 points (27-22-2)

East Division

Washington Capitals: 68 points (32-13-4)

Pittsburgh Penguins: 67 points (32-15-3)

New York Islanders: 63 points (29-15-5)

Boston Bruins: 62 points (28-14-6)

North Division

Toronto Maple Leafs: 65 points (30-13-5)

Edmonton Oilers: 58 points (28-16-2)

Winnipeg Jets: 57 points (27-18-3)

Montreal Canadiens: 51 points (21-17-9)

* = already-clinched playoff spot

Standings via NHL.com

The Panthers were again led to a postseason berth by the combination of Jonathan Huberdeau and Aleksander Barkov.

Huberdeau, who paced the team in points last season, has tallied 57 points by way of 18 goals and 39 assists, while Barkov is leading the team in goals with 24 goals and 28 assists.

Following the departure of Mike Hoffman to the St. Louis Blues, the Panthers needed to make up for his 59 points from the 2019-20 campaign. And Carter Verhaeghe, who signed with the team as a free agent in October, has stepped up with 17 goals and 18 assists.

The Florida offense had scored 158 goals this season, seventh-most in the league entering Tuesday.

Heading into Tuesday, backup goaltender Chris Driedger made 22 starts with a 2.17 GAA and .923 save percentage while splitting time with Sergei Bobrovsky (2.86 GAA, .907 save percentage through 28 games).

If the Panthers can perform on both sides of the puck as well as they've demonstrated this season, they should have a good chance at advancing in the postseason.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are offering one lucky fan and five of their friends the opportunity of a lifetime: a night with the Stanley Cup.

According to Ben Montgomery of Yahoo Sports, the Lightning are turning one of their suites at Amalie Arena into an Airbnb for one night only on April 24.

The first fan to book the reservation when it goes live can stay the night in the Amalie Arena suite with five other guests. The cost to book the suite is $5,000, which will benefit the Lightning Foundation and the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay.

In addition to getting to sleep near the Stanley Cup, the lucky winner and their friends will have their own private happy hour complete with champagne and a five-course meal.

They will also be treated to a tour of the arena, private ice time, a chance to sound the goal horn and a movie on the Lightning Vision screen.

The Lightning won the Stanley Cup last season when they beat the Dallas Stars in six games in the Stanley Cup Final.

That marked the second Cup win in franchise history for the Bolts and their first since the 2003-04 season.

Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs thanks to his 10 goals and 12 assists in 25 games.

Tampa is once again in position to challenge for the Stanley Cup this season, as its 60 points are tied for the second-most in the NHL with the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Vegas Golden Knights and Toronto Maple Leafs. The Colorado Avalanche lead the way with 64 points.

Taylor Hall Traded to Bruins; Sabres Get Anders Bjork, 2nd-Round Pick

The Buffalo Sabres traded star forward Taylor Hall to the Boston Bruins on Sunday.

Sportnet's Elliotte Friedman first reported the news Sunday.

The 2018 Hart Trophy winner has struggled for form since agreeing to a one-year, $8 million deal with the Sabres last offseason, posting two goals and 17 assists in 37 games before Buffalo was able to find a suitable offer for him.

Things have gone terribly for the Sabres in 2020-21. Captain Jack Eichel has played just 21 games this year beecause of injury, the club was prohibited from team activities for seven days following a COVID-19 outbreak in February and head coach Ralph Krueger was fired 12 games into an 18-game winless streak.

It was during that streak Hall told reporters he would be willing to waive his no-movement clause. The Sabres began holding the 29-year-old out of games a week before the trade deadline to ensure their top asset didn't get injured, increasing the likelihood the former No. 1 overall pick wouldn't finish the year in Buffalo.

The Canadian will now join his fourth team in three years, and his fifth franchise since entering the league, following stints with the Edmonton Oilers, New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes.

Joining a contender should help Hall rediscover his scoring touch, and having some more talent around him certainly won't hurt. The one-year experiment with the Sabres may not have worked out, but he still has plenty to offer in the NHL.

Panthers' Aaron Ekblad Expected to Miss 12 Weeks After Surgery on Leg Injury

Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad is expected to miss 12 weeks after undergoing surgery on a leg injury suffered during the second period of Sunday's game against the Dallas Stars, the team announced Monday.

Panthers general manager Bill Zito addressed the situation in a statement:

"To be without a player of Aaron's caliber and character is an irreplaceable loss to our hockey club. Aaron is an incredibly driven and talented young player and a tremendous leader for our team. He has the heartfelt support of our organization, his teammates and fans as we wish him the best in his recovery and his eventual return. Despite Aaron's absence from our lineup, we are confident in our group's resiliency and motivation as we move forward."

Ekblad left Sunday's game on a stretcher, with the Associated Press noting trainers placed an aircast on his left leg. The 25-year-old landed awkwardly on the leg after a hit into the boards by Dallas Stars defenseman Esa Lindell and immediately began clutching his knee.

Though the Panthers did not have an update on the 25-year-old's status on Sunday night, the team did send out its best wishes to the defenseman:

Teammate Anthony Duclair spoke about the situation, as well:

Ekblad has enjoyed a strong 2020-21 campaign so far. His 11 goals are only six away from setting a career high, and he delivered the overtime winner in Saturday's 4-3 victory over Dallas.

Florida, meanwhile, will have to cope without yet another key player. Aleksander Barkov is nursing a lower-body injury, and Patric Hornqvist is day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.

The Panthers sit third in the Central Division with 48 points at 22-9-4, putting them in position to qualify for the playoffs. Ekblad's injury could loom large should the team qualify for the postseason, though.

The Montreal Canadiens have had more games postponed because of the league's COVID-19 protocols.

The league announced Tuesday that the team's games through Sunday have been postponed following two players entering the league's protocol.

The Canadiens were set to play the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night, but the league canceled that game for the same reason.

According to Sportsnet, forwards Jesper Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia were the two players added to the COVID Protocol List on Monday, though the designation does not necessarily mean that they tested positive for the virus.

Both players played Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks and were on the ice for morning skate on Monday. The team's facility was closed on Tuesday and all players and staff are undergoing their regular testing for the virus, per Sportsnet's Eric Engels

Engels later added that there is only one Vancouver player on the league's COVID-19 list, though he did not play with the Canucks against the Canadiens.

The postponements are the first of the season in the league's North Division, which encompasses all seven of the NHL's Canada-based teams. The new postponements—which include scheduled games for Wednesday and Friday against Edmonton—bring the NHL total up to 45, though five of those were weather-related, according to the league

Ralph Krueger Fired as Sabres HC After 6-22 Start to 2021 Season

The Buffalo Sabres announced Wednesday head coach Ralph Krueger has been fired following the team's 12-game losing streak.

Buffalo sits at the bottom of the NHL standings with 16 points (6-18-4 record), which is six points fewer than any other team. Krueger, who was hired in May 2019, finishes his tenure with a 36-49-12 mark.

Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News reported the other staff changes, including Don Granato taking over as head coach on an interim basis:

Expectations were on the rise for the Sabres coming into the 2020-21 campaign. They'd made a major free-agent splash by signing Taylor Hall, who won the Hart Trophy as the NHL's MVP in 2017-18, along with the trade acquisition of Eric Staal from the Minnesota Wild.

Those additions combined with the continued development of highly touted young players like Rasmus Dahlin and Dylan Cozens was projected to at least keep Buffalo competitive in the tough East Division.

Instead, Krueger drew the ire of fans and local media for his questionable lineup decisions and his preferred style of play. The Buffalo News recently ranked the team below the Seattle Kraken, an expansion franchise yet to draft a roster ahead of its 2021-22 debut, in its NHL power rankings:

Jeff Skinner, who scored 40 goals playing alongside franchise cornerstone Jack Eichel on the top line two seasons ago, was demoted to the fourth line and averaged a career-low ice time (13:45). It was a strange decision based on his history of being an elite five-on-five scorer.

Skinner, who's in the second season of an eight-year, $72 million contract, was a healthy scratch for two games earlier in the campaign but shrugged off Krueger's suggestion it could help him evaluate his play.

"I don't think I've ever really felt like I need a day off to relook at things," Skinner told reporters. "I've seen a lot in this league, run through adversity before my career. You just work, keep working and put your head down, and that's what I'll do."

Most of the problems stemmed from Krueger's insistence on a defense-first brand of hockey despite Buffalo's subpar group of defensemen and lackluster goaltending.

If the Sabres were going to make a jump this season, it was going to come on the back of an offense led by Eichel, Hall, Staal, Skinner, Sam Reinhart and Victor Olofsson. It's a top six with ample upside if given more offensive freedom.

Yet, Krueger refused to relent to conventional wisdom as the losses mounted—fittingly, Skinner scored a five-on-five goal in Tuesday's loss to the New Jersey Devils despite logging less ice time than the likes of Kyle Okposo and Riley Sheahan—and it cost the 61-year-old Canadian his job.

The coaching change likely won't mean much for Buffalo this season. It's 18 points behind the Boston Bruins for the East's final playoff spot and the relative strength of the division makes it virtually impossible to go on the type of run it needs to climb the standings.

That said, Krueger illustrated he wasn't the answer to the problems that have led the Sabres to an NHL-long nine-year playoff drought, and the 12-game losing skid hastened his departure.

Now the focus shifts to the NHL trade deadline on April 12, where players such as Hall and Staal could be on the move as the team's roster reconstruction begins anew with an eye toward the 2021-22 season.

Sabres' Jack Eichel out for 'Forseeable Future' with Upper Body Injury

Buffalo Sabres head coach Ralph Krueger announced Saturday center Jack Eichel will be out of the lineup for the "foreseeable future" with an upper-body injury.

Former NHL defenseman Aaron Ward reported Eichel is expected to miss around eight weeks with a neck injury, which means he could be sidelined for the remainder of the 2020-21 season.

Eichel, the second overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft, enjoyed a strong rookie season for the Sabres. The former Boston University standout tallied 24 goals and 32 assists across 81 games. His second season got off to a delayed start because of a high-ankle sprain, however.

The 24-year-old Massachusetts native missed the first quarter of the 2016-17 campaign with the ailment, which he suffered in the final practice before the season. He returned to play the final 61 contests. It represented a rare health setback after missing just one game each as a rookie and during his year at BU.

Eichel suffered another high-ankle sprain during the 2017-18 season. He ended up making 67 appearances before bouncing back to play 145 appearances over the past two years.

In all, he's tallied 355 points in 375 career games despite the injury absences.

The Sabres will need to juggle the lineup to fill the void. Rookie Dylan Cozens is the best option to take over alongside Taylor Hall and Sam Reinhart on the top line, but Krueger's head-scratching lineup decisions make it tough to project how the lines will look in the coming weeks.
