When he was traded from the Cleveland Browns to the Carolina Panthers, Baker Mayfield sacrificed a portion of his salary to facilitate the deal. Now, it appears he'll have the chance to earn that money back.

As part of his contract with the Panthers, Mayfield can earn up to $3.5 million in incentives based on playing time and performance, per ESPN's Field Yates:

The 27-year-old quarterback was originally set to make $18.8 million for the 2022 season after Cleveland had exercised his fifth-year option. When Mayfield was acquired by Carolina earlier this month, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Panthers would pay $4.85 million of his salary, while the Browns were on the hook to pay $10.5 million.

The incentives in Mayfield's contract are based both on individual and team performance. If he plays in 75 percent of the snaps this season, he will earn a bonus if Carolina wins 10 games and for every potential playoff victory. Leading the Panthers to a top-five or top-10 offense would also boost Mayfield's bank account, as will a Pro Bowl selection. His accuracy will also be important this year, thanks to the completion percentage incentive.

The No. 1 overall pick in 2018, Mayfield will be competing for Carolina's starting job against Sam Darnold, who was selected two picks after him. The Panthers also chose former Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral in the third round of this year's draft.

Mayfield will surely be motivated to win the quarterback competition, especially considering that Carolina's Week 1 opponent is Cleveland. The relationship between Mayfield and the Browns soured after the team publicly pursued and then acquired three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans.

Report: Baker Mayfield Viewed as 'Childish' by Browns; Behavior 'Annoyed Teammates'

The Carolina Panthers will be hoping they get a new version of Baker Mayfield in 2022, instead of the one reportedly seen as "childish" while with the Cleveland Browns.

Mayfield was viewed by the Browns as "childish and immature," according to The Athletic's Jason Lloyd, who added that the 27-year-old was "often difficult to coach" and that his behavior "annoyed teammates and divided the locker room."

Of course, the most recognized issue was between Mayfield and former Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was released by the franchise during the 2021 campaign and later signed with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Browns released Beckham after his father, Odell Beckham Sr., shared a video that highlighted times when Mayfield either missed his son entirely or didn't throw the ball to him when he was wide open.

Beckham neither publicly disavowed his father's comments nor spoke to Mayfield about it, according to ESPN's Jake Trotter, and the two just never appeared to be on the same page during their time together in Cleveland.

Lloyd also cited an instance where Mayfield got irritated with Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski for missing a meeting after the team lost 45-7 to the New England Patriots in November so he could speak with defensive end Myles Garrett instead.

From that point on, Stefanski never missed another meeting and "privately shined a glaring spotlight on his quarterback during film sessions from that day forward," according to Lloyd.

The Browns traded Mayfield to the Panthers on July 6 in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2024, putting an end to his tenure in Cleveland. After acquiring Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans earlier in the offseason, the franchise had no need for Mayfield on its roster.

Now Mayfield will likely enter a battle with Sam Darnold for Carolina's starting job. Considering Darnold had an even worse 2021 campaign than Mayfield, the former Brown probably has a good chance to get the nod.

Mayfield appeared in 14 games for the Browns last season, playing with a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, and completed 60.5 percent of his passes for 3,010 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

Darnold, meanwhile, appeared in 12 games because of a shoulder injury, but he didn't show any signs of improvement from his days with the New York Jets in those games. He went 4-7 and completed just 59.9 percent of his passes for 2,527 yards, nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

That said, even if Mayfield is arguably the better quarterback, it's hard to imagine the Panthers starting him if his behavior issues continue in Carolina.

The Cleveland Browns traded quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday for a conditional 2024 fifth-round pick.

According to Albert Breer of The MMQB, the conditional pick will turn into a fourth-rounder if Mayfield plays 70 percent of Carolina's offensive snaps in 2022:

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network first reported the trade, noting the teams will split Mayfield's $18.9 million salary. Peter Schrager of Fox Sports broke down the details:

Mayfield will face his former team in Week 1, as the Panthers host the Browns to start the regular season.

Nearly four months ago, the Browns acquired Deshuan Watson from the Houston Texans, all but guaranteeing Mayfield's exit. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner is coming off a 2021 season in which he struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness. He is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery after playing last season with a harness.

While it was believed Mayfield would return to play under his fifth-year option, the Browns did not limit themselves in a search for a new quarterback. They met with Watson and then gave him with a fully guaranteed $230 million contract.

It was jarring after Mayfield appeared to be solidified as the Browns' long-term quarterback.

Mayfield helped lead the Browns to their first playoff berth since 2002 in 2020, throwing for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns against eight interceptions. It was a night-and-day turnaround from his nightmarish 2019, which left many to fear he'd join the lengthy list of Browns quarterback busts.

The hiring of Kevin Stefanski as head coach appeared to change Mayfield's trajectory—but that was only temporarily. He threw for just 3,010 yards and 17 touchdowns against 13 interceptions last season. The Browns failed to make the playoffs and watched as Odell Beckham Jr. thrived for the Super Bowl-winning Los Angeles Rams after agitating his way out of Cleveland midway through the season.

The falling-out was enough for the Browns, who fashion themselves as a Super Bowl contender. All that was left was finding an upgrade at quarterback, and Cleveland feels it finally has one.

This is the second straight offseason in which the Panthers have taken on a struggling quarterback. A year ago, it was Sam Darnold in a move that quickly backfired. Now the Panthers have the top two quarterbacks from the 2018 draft, and they'll compete for the starting job.

The Panthers will pay Darnold a guaranteed $18.9 million next season.

Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors: Panthers a Team to Watch Once 49ers QB Begins Throwing

The Carolina Panthers remain a possible landing spot for Jimmy Garoppolo once he proves he is healthy, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler broke down the latest on the San Francisco 49ers quarterback Monday on Get Up:

"Over the next month, the plan is for him to start throwing a football before training camp. That's the loose plan and so that should heat up his trade market. And so the 49ers are hopeful to find a trade for him. Still watch for Carolina here because they're the team that's combing through the veteran quarterback market more than anybody else. They've been implicated with Baker Mayfield, but they've also discussed Garoppolo. As soon as he's healthy, the 49ers would be off the books on his $7-plus million in injury guarantees, so that's good for them."

Garoppolo underwent surgery on his shoulder in March and is yet to resume throwing. Joseph Person of The Athletic previously reported the Panthers were interested in a trade for the quarterback, but they were hesitant because of the injury.

Carolina could also stick with Sam Darnold under center after an up-and-down 2021 season for the quarterback. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported the coaches "like the edge and fight they saw" from Darnold during the offseason program and believe "they have something to work with."

Baker Mayfield is also considered an option for the Panthers. Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported the team has engaged in trade talks with the Cleveland Browns.

Carolina knows it needs improvements at the position to improve upon last year's 5-12 finish.

Darnold, Cam Newton and P.J. Walker all started games for the Panthers in 2021, and the team had the worst combined quarterback rating in the NFL at 68.5.

Carolina drafted Matt Corral in the third round out of Ole Miss, although the rookie might not be ready to contribute in Week 1.

It leaves a few veteran options for the Panthers, but the lack of moves shows they will remain patient in making a decision. Getting a chance to see Garoppolo at full strength could allow the squad to make an accurate evaluation of its options.

The 49ers, meanwhile, hope to unload the $26.95 million cap hit attached to Garoppolo. Though the quarterback has a $7.5 million injury guarantee, San Francisco would be left with only $1.4 million in dead cap if he is traded or released while healthy, per Spotrac.

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Robbie Anderson said that his recent Instagram comments that appeared to express displeasure with a potential union between his team and Cleveland Browns signal-caller Baker Mayfield were done out of support for incumbent Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold.

ESPN's Kimberley A. Martin relayed comments Anderson made to local reporters.

Anthony Rizzuti of Panthers Wire explained what went down on April 15:

On Friday, a fan Instagram account, @panthers.way, posted a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport that suggested Carolina was the most likely landing spot for Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Anderson (@chosen1ra), who wasn’t subtweeting or sub-commenting this time, made it clear he’s not exactly cool with such a prospect.

Anderson responded "Nooooo" to that IG post and then later wrote "Facts" in response to another post saying that the wideout did not want Mayfield in town.

It's no secret that the Panthers aren't beholden to rolling with Darnold going forward. They drafted Ole Miss signal-caller Matt Corral in the third round this year, and rumors have connected Mayfield with the Panthers after Cleveland traded for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported on the matter Tuesday, saying there's "urgency" for the Panthers to get a deal done "soon."

As for Anderson, he's coming off a down year in which he had 53 catches for 519 yards. He posted 95 receptions for 1,096 yards the season beforehand.

Anderson has played with Darnold for three seasons: two with the New York Jets (2018-19) and last year with Carolina.

The 29-year-old is under contract with the Panthers through 2023.
