Luke Kennard Leads Paul George, Kawhi Leonard-Less Clippers Past Grizzlies

The shorthanded Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 117-105 at home in Staples Center on Wednesday thanks in part to 28 points from Luke Kennard and 25 more via Marcus Morris Sr.

The short-handed Clippers were significantly undermanned and played without Kawhi Leonard (foot), Paul George (rest), Serge Ibaka (back), Patrick Beverley (hand), Rajon Rondo (wrist) and Reggie Jackson (rest). Memphis did not have center Jonas Valanciunas (concussion).

L.A. trailed by 15 points after the first quarter but cut into the lead before halftime and outscored Memphis 64-43 in the second half.

The 42-19 Clippers have won 10 of their last 11 games. The 29-28 Grizzlies lost their second straight game.

Notable Performances

Grizzlies G Ja Morant: 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists

Grizzlies F Jaren Jackson Jr.: 15 points, 8 rebounds, 4 blocks

Grizzlies F Kyle Anderson: 12 points, 3 blocks

Clippers F Luke Kennard: 28 points, 7 rebounds

Clippers F Marcus Morris Sr.: 25 points, 4 rebounds

Clippers G Terance Mann: 19 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds

Trio of Kennard, Morris and Mann Paces Clippers

The Clippers entered their matchup with Memphis facing significant obstacles without their two All-Stars—Leonard and George—along with the absences of other key veterans like Reggie Jackson and Rajon Rondo.

Memphis wasn't fully healthy itself sans Valanciunas, but the Grizzlies had the rest of the rotation intact as they looked to hopefully make up some ground in the playoff race and inch closer to a coveted top-six Western Conference seed.

The Clippers had other ideas, though, and dominated the second half en route to a win that showcased the team's tremendous depth.

Kennard, Morris and Terance Mann led that second-half charge.

Defense led to offense in the third quarter when Kennard got the swipe. The ball ended in Mann's hands, and he took care of the rest.

Mann was arguably the best player on the floor Wednesday, doing a little of everything. Here he is driving the lane and finding center Ivica Zubac for the dunk:

Once again, defense led to offense. This time, Yogi Ferrell got the steal, but Mann put himself in position for an easy bucket after the turnover:

Excellent teamwork and ball movement from a group that had barely played with each other before soon ensued, with Kennard finishing it off:

Kennard eventually sealed the game with this dagger three-pointer to put L.A. up 12 with just over three minutes remaining:

L.A. ultimately finished the game on a 27-16 run, with Kennard and Morris hitting some big buckets down the stretch to seal this game. Now the Clippers are 10-1 in their past 11 and have their sights set on potentially moving into the top two in the West.

Brutal Loss for Grizzlies, Who Can't Sustain First-Quarter Momentum

There's no way to sugarcoat this loss for Memphis. Yes, the Grizzlies were on the road, and yes, the Clippers still have a deep and talented bench despite missing their stars. But this was obviously a game Memphis should have won as it looks to improve its potential postseason seeding.

In addition, Memphis led by 15 after the first quarter and looked ready to run L.A. out of its own gym.

The Kennard-Morris-Mann trio had different ideas on offense, while the Memphis struggled in the second half.

It was all aces for Memphis to start, though, as Ja Morant shined:

Jaren Jackson Jr. stuck a three off a dish from Morant:

When Morant wasn't dishing assists, he was scoring, and he had 12 in six minutes.

Memphis shot 70 percent from the field in the first quarter. That wasn't sustainable, but it was an excellent start.

Pretty much nothing went right from there. Morant cooled off a bit and finished with just 10 more points. No other Grizzlies player outside of Morant and Jackson scored more than 12. The defense stumbled, allowing the Clips to make 14-of-27 three-pointers.

The scoring drought and three-point defense largely negated an excellent opening 12 minutes, and now Memphis will have to regroup as it looks to stay above .500.

What's Next?

Memphis will play a pair of road games against the Portland Trail Blazers in Moda Center on Friday and Sunday. L.A. will start a three-game road trip by playing the Houston Rockets on Friday at 8 p.m. ET in Toyota Center.

Chauvin was one of four officers from the Minneapolis Police Department who approached George Floyd in his vehicle on May 25, 2020. The officers were responding to an alleged forgery in progress.

Police handcuffed Floyd, and a video of his arrest showed Chauvin kneeling on his neck as Floyd indicated he was struggling to breathe. Prosecutors said Chauvin did this for nine minutes and 29 seconds. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital roughly an hour after he was transported from the scene.

In March, Floyd's family agreed to a $27 million settlement with the city of Minneapolis in a civil suit. City Council President Lisa Bender said of the outcome that "no amount of money" would bring Floyd back to his family.

The killings of Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery sparked nationwide protests across the summer of 2020. A number of athletes across sports, including NBA, WNBA and NFL players and college athletes, attended or organized protests and spoke out against racial injustice and police violence. Players from the WNBA also wore Taylor's name on the back of their jerseys while using the 2020 season to draw attention to social justice causes.

The shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in August also prompted the Milwaukee Bucks to refuse to take the court for an NBA playoff game against the Orlando Magic. Teams across multiple leagues followed suit, bringing the sports world to a temporary halt.

As a result of the stoppage, the NBA and NBPA agreed to implement multiple social justice initiatives, including establishing a social justice coalition, opening NBA arenas up as voting centers in the 2020 general election and working to promote voter access and civic engagement.

Take a bow, Luka Doncic.

Just when it seems like there's nothing else the Dallas Mavericks superstar can do to impress, he dazzles with another memorable play. On Wednesday, it was a stumbling, off-balance three at the buzzer to give his team a dramatic 114-113 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum.

Dallas was down two on its final possession only because Grayson Allen missed two free throws on the other end that could have iced it.

Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis led the way for the victors, while solid showings from Allen, Ja Morant and Jonas Valanciunas were not enough for the Grizzlies.

Notable Player Stats

  • Luka Doncic, G, DAL: 29 PTS, 9 AST, 5 REB
  • Kristaps Porzingis, C, DAL: 21 PTS, 6 REB
  • Ja Morant, G, MEM: 17 PTS, 5 AST, 4 REB

Doncic Stuns the Grizzlies

This was a chance for Doncic to make a statement, and did he ever.

Not only has he been one of the hottest players in the league with 25 or more points in 13 of his last 15 games, but he figures to be the best player on the floor in any potential play-in tournament matchup between the Grizzlies and Mavericks.

Memphis had other ideas in the early going, though, and held the two-time All-Star to four points in the first half. Doncic helped make up for his lack of scoring with seven dimes as he looked to facilitate with so much additional defensive attention directed his way, but the Mavericks were still trailing at intermission.

Porzingis kept Dallas within striking distance while Doncic was relatively quiet, and Dwight Powell and Tim Hardaway Jr. provided a spark off the bench.

Still, the only way the Mavericks were going to steal a win on the road was if Luka woke up as a scorer, and he did just that with 14 points in the third quarter.

He then mixed in a step-back off one foot and a key triple in the fourth, while backcourt mate Jalen Brunson dished out six assists in the quarter to keep the team close. One of those assists came on a Dorian Finney-Smith three to tie the game with fewer than four minutes remaining, which is all the help Doncic needed to take over in crunch time.

The two-time All-Star assisted a Porzingis basket, drove to the rim for a layup, hit a free throw and drilled the dagger to turn a five-point deficit into a stunning win in the final 62 seconds.

Grizzlies' Collapse Spoils Balanced Effort

Memphis' path to victory in Wednesday's contest needed to start on the offensive side.

After all, Morant was the only Grizzlies player to score more than 12 points in his team's February loss to the Mavericks. The team as a whole shot just 39.4 percent from the field and 19.4 percent from three, which is almost never going to cut it at the NBA level.

Allen got the memo.

The Duke product caught fire from deep in the early going and poured in 17 points in the first half. He was the only Memphis player in double figures by intermission, although Morant sliced through the defense multiple times while getting into the lane and Dillon Brooks aggressively sought out his shot.

The Grizzlies extended their lead in the third as Morant flew out in transition for a dunk, Valanciunas completed a double-double by battling in the paint and Desmond Bane provided outside shooting off the bench, including a triple on a Morant assist in the last five seconds of the quarter.

It looked to be more of the same in the fourth with Bane facilitating, Allen hitting another three and Valanciunas continuing to pound the offensive glass. He finished with eight offensive rebounds and both kept possessions alive and scored himself.

The game looked all but over when Morant found Valanciunas with a beautiful assist and Kyle Anderson hit a three to push the lead to five, but the Grizzlies didn't score a single field goal in the final two minutes and saw their otherwise stellar effort slip away when Allen missed those free throws.

What's Next?

Both teams play Friday when the Mavericks host the New York Knicks and the Grizzlies visit the Chicago Bulls.

NBA Ball Stars Mobile Video Game, Ja Morant Cover and Gameplay Trailer Released

Apr 6, 2021

Netmarble announced Tuesday it's launched NBA Ball Stars, a mobile video game in which players can complete puzzles to upgrade their roster in pursuit of a championship.

Here's a look at the official gameplay trailer with the Memphis Grizzlies' Ja Morant, the 2019-20 NBA Rookie of the Year, highlighted as the cover athlete:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sanIVgiB1-E

The company reached an agreement with the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association to use player names and likenesses along with official team names in the game.

"Our partnership with the NBA has been momentous in the creation of a unique genre of game with appeal beyond casual gamers and sports fans to broader NBA culture, within the mobile gaming industry," Netmarble U.S. president Simon Sim said.

The game ranges from quick play to a franchise mode, in which gamers can build a roster of their favorite NBA players and increase their talent level through completing puzzles, including head-to-head battles where opponents can place "Blocker Gems" as a hurdle to success.

Winning puzzles allows gamers to increase their players' offensive or defensive skill level, or they can unlock signature moves. Players' overall rating will increase over time, and the goal is then to create the most optimized lineup to move up the leaderboard.

Netmarble, which is known for titles like Lineage 2: Revolution and Marvel: Future Fight, provided a general overview of its newest release in collaboration with the Kung Fu Factory:

"NBA Ball Stars combines star players from the NBA, fast-paced gameplay and franchise-building skills into a strategic, team-based game suitable for general sports fans, casual gamers and players of all levels. Gamers will take charge of their favorite team and make a run for the championship title, choosing from an extensive line-up of NBA players to draft and train. By successfully bursting sequences of matching gems, players control their team and power-up their athletes to execute special shots, steals, slam dunks and more."

Sim said players can expect "fresh content and surprises" in the coming months.

NBA Ball Stars, which is free to download, is available on mobile devices in Apple's App Store and the Google Play store.

The NBA revealed its 2020-21 Rising Stars rosters Wednesday through NBA Top Shot.

New Orleans Pelicans big man Zion Williamson, Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant and Charlotte Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball headline the group.

With the league scaling down All-Star Weekend because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Rising Stars Challenge won't be played. However, officials still wanted to honor the best first- and second-year players from the United States and the rest of the world.

United States

  • LaMelo Ball, G, Charlotte Hornets
  • Anthony Edwards, G, Minnesota Timberwolves
  • Tyrese Haliburton, G, Sacramento Kings
  • Tyler Herro, G, Miami Heat
  • De'Andre Hunter, F, Atlanta Hawks
  • Keldon Johnson, G/F, San Antonio Spurs
  • Ja Morant, G, Memphis Grizzlies
  • Michael Porter Jr., F, Denver Nuggets
  • Zion Williamson, F, New Orleans Pelicans
  • James Wiseman, C, Golden State Warriors

World

  • Precious Achiuwa, F, Miami Heat
  • Nickeil Alexander-Walker, G, New Orleans Pelicans
  • Deni Avdija, F, Washington Wizards
  • RJ Barrett, G/F, New York Knicks
  • Facundo Campazzo, G, Denver Nuggets
  • Brandon Clarke, F, Memphis Grizzlies
  • Luguentz Dort, G, Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Rui Hachimura, F, Washington Wizards
  • Theo Maledon, G, Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Mychal Mulder, G, Golden State Warriors

Williamson and Morant were the two biggest locks.

The former has missed just one game and is averaging 25.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists while shooting 61.4 percent from the field. The latter is the reigning Rookie of the Year and has seen his points (19.1) and assists (7.8) climb since last season.

Likewise, Ball was the one rookie you could firmly cement as one of the Rising Stars. Beyond the 15.7 points and 6.4 assists he's averaging, he's shooting far better (44.6 percent overall and 36.7 percent on threes) than most expected out of the gate.

The same can't be said of Anthony Edwards. The No. 1 overall pick is hitting just 31.2 percent of his long-range jumpers, but his potential is evident. In addition, the Minnesota Timberwolves guard delivered what's likely to be the best dunk of the season.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyNodFiofS8

New York Knicks guard Immanuel Quickley might be the biggest snub on either squad.

The 21-year-old rookie looks like he'll be a steal with the 25th overall pick. Through 32 games, he's averaging 12.6 points and 2.4 assists in 18.9 minutes on the floor.

Knicks fans will probably settle for the team qualifying for the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

NBA Slam Dunk Contest 2021: Predicting This Year's Contestants

This year's NBA All-Star Game will have a different sort of halftime show.

A year after Chance the Rapper, DJ Khaled, Lil Wayne and Quavo took the stage at the United Center in Chicago before Team LeBron took the 157-155 victory over Team Giannis, the halftime entertainment will come in the form of the Slam Dunk Contest.

Obi Toppin, New York Knicks

Toppin has struggled at the start of his NBA career, with 4.8 points and 2.4 rebounds through 21 appearances for the Knicks so far.

The rookie, who racked up 107 dunks during his 2020 season at Dayton to lead the NCAA, hinted at a Dunk Contest appearance earlier in February in speaking to Marc Berman of the New York Post

While he told Berman he's still working on adjusting to the "physicality" and "the speed of the game" at the professional level, one thing that Toppin has carried with him through his start in the league is his affinity for hanging out on the rim.

In a unique season, perhaps the big-time stage of the All-Star Game will help the 22-year-old find his footing when the second half of the 2020-21 season begins.

Zion Williamson, New Orleans Pelicans

Similarly to Toppin, Williamson also showed up his competitors with his flashy dunks before he made it to the NBA.

Back when he was 17, Williamson took over the dunk contest at the McDonald's All-American Game before he became even more of a household name when he arrived at Duke.

In addition to leading the Pelicans with 25.1 points per game, Williamson, a year removed from his All-Rookie selection, has brought his affinity for high-flying shots to the next level.

In early February, his antics forced the second half of a Pelicans-Indiana Pacers game to be delayed when he broke the rim on a dunk attempt.

With skill and flair, Williamson is the perfect candidate for halftime entertainment.

Miles Bridges, Charlotte Hornets

Bridges had a memorable appearance in the Dunk Contest as a rookie in 2019, though he fell short of the second round.

While averaging 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds for the Hornets this season, he has continued his penchant for dunking, with 32 dunks so far this season.

His numbers won't see him being named to the Eastern Conference reserves list, where he'd be on the bench behind starters Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bradley Beal, Kevin Durant, Joel Embiid and Kyrie Irving, but there's certainly a place for him on the All-Star Game stage, where he'd be able to rebound from his 2019 Dunk Contest outing.

Anthony Edwards, Minnesota Timberwolves

Does there even need to be a Slam Dunk Contest after Edwards' dunk of the year from Friday?

The 2020 No. 1 pick took down Yuta Watanabe with a monster dunk in an 86-81 win over the Toronto Raptors.

Though the Timberwolves are struggling, Edwards is a bright spot. He's the leading rookie scorer in the NBA, averaging 14.3 points and 3.6 rebounds.

His exuberant on-court presence is just an extension of his mindset about Minnesota's season.

"We're losing a lot, so everybody might come in sad. But that's not going to make it work," Edwards said, per Mark Medina of USA Today. "So I come in happy, loud and energetic. I'm the youngest player, so I just try to have fun with it."

The One Who'll Get Away (Again)

One other player who would be a serious contender in the Slam Dunk Contest is the Memphis Grizzlies' Ja Morant, who finished sixth in fan voting to be named an All-Star starter.

Though he's certainly shown that he's qualified to participate in the halftime contest, the second-year star said he wouldn't enter if he was chosen, having agreed with the hesitation shown by LeBron James about conducting an All-Star Game in the first place.

He refused an invitation to participate last season, saying it didn't line up with his desire to help his team "keep pushing and win ball games."

With the announcement of All-Star reserves coming Tuesday, the Slam Dunk Contest participants should also be made public soon.

Damian Lillard Says Ja Morant Is His Favorite Young NBA Star to Watch

Damian Lillard is a big Ja Morant fan.

The Portland Trail Blazers star was asked Thursday on Twitter who his favorite young NBA star was to watch, and Lillard answered simply "Ja."

Not a bad choice. The Memphis Grizzlies point guard is having an excellent sophomore campaign, averaging 18.8 points and 8.3 assists per game, shooting 45.8 percent from the field but just 25 percent from three. He also remains one of the most thrilling players to watch attack the rim:

And on Wednesday, he posted a 15-point, 12-assist and 11-rebound triple-double, the third of his career. Morant is a baller, and he has a fan in Dame.

Zion Williamson Outduels Ja Morant as Pelicans Beat Grizzlies

On the last day of a four-game road trip, the New Orleans Pelicans finally picked up a win.

After dropping three straight, the Pelicans dominated the Memphis Grizzlies, 144-113, on Tuesday in Memphis.

Zion Williamson's 31 points paced the Pelicans, who improve to 12-15.

The 11-12 Grizzlies were led by Ja Morant, who posted 28.

Notable Performers

  • Zion Williamson, Pelicans: 31 PTS, 6 AST, 7 REB
  • Brandon Ingram, Pelicans: 22 PTS, 7 AST, 4 REB
  • Josh Hart, Pelicans: 27 PTS, 9 REB
  • Ja Morant, Grizzlies: 28 PTS, 8 AST, 7 REB

Balanced Scoring Leads Pelicans

Last time these two teams met, Zion Williamson erupted for 29 points, but he was limited in the first half when he got into foul trouble. Brandon Ingram filled in the empty space with 27 points that night.

But they weren't the only ones leading the pack for the Pelicans that night. Eric Bledsoe also grabbed 21 points, and Lonzo Ball fit into the rotation to tally 16.

Head coach Stan Van Gundy praised the ability of his stars to share the ball after that outing (h/t Jamile Dunn of SB Nation).

"Both (Ingram) and Zion, I think that they trust their teammates," he said. "They know they’re good players and they’re making plays for them. They are using their abilities to make the right play."

If the second-year star could stay on the court, the Pelicans had the opportunity to spell trouble for a Memphis group that has allowed an average of 117.3 points per 100 possessions this month.

Williamson grabbed 15 points in 16 minutes played through the first two quarters.

Josh Hart helped contribute to the lead with 15 points off of the bench, nine of which came on three-of-five shooting from deep.

He ended the night with a season-high 27 points.

Williamson added nine points in the third quarter while he paved the way for Ingram—who finished with seven assists on the night—to add to his point total. After he recorded eight points in the first half, he doubled his total contributions by recording eight points in the third quarter alone.

Ingram ended the night with 22 points.

Ja Morant Falters After Strong Start

The Pelicans defense focused heavily on limiting the 2019-20 Rookie of the Year Ja Morant in their first outing, and it worked, with Morant limited to 16 points in 31 minutes and just two points in the fourth quarter.

But along the way, Morant was able to pick up a game-high nine assists to help Kyle Anderson dish out 21 points and allow Jonas Valanciunas tack on a team-best 23 in 24 minutes.

The Grizzlies have mastered the art of the helper, with a league-leading team 28.6 assists per game. But they couldn't find their groove once the Pelicans settled in on Tuesday.

Memphis held a slight lead after one quarter, up 32-29 thanks to 10 points from Morant. He went quiet in the second quarter, limited to just five in the frame, and that's when the Pelicans took an advantage, up 63-58 going into the break.

Behind him, Anderson and Valanciunas were there to keep the Grizzlies in the game, with eight points each through the first two quarters.

Anderson broke out in the third, adding nine points, but Morant grabbed just three more in the quarter and Valanciunas was scoreless. That lack of scoring wasn't a good sign for the Grizzlies.

Morant stepped up for more in the final frame, ending the night with 28 total points, but it wasn't enough for the Grizzlies to overcome the Pelicans.

What's Next?

After a four-game road trip, the Pelicans return home to face the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.

The Grizzlies will host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET.
